Haskins encourages children to connect with nature

Haskins Garden Centres is supporting National Children’s Gardening Week (May 25-June 2) to encourage children to get outside and enjoy gardening.

Haskins launched its new Facebook page, ‘Garden Gang,’ earlier this year, designed to increase children’s interest in and enjoyment of gardening. The Facebook page provides parents and children with regular updates, free activities, fun and educational worksheets and gardening games.

Presented by the Horticultural Trade Association, National Children’s Gardening Week is a nationally recognised awareness week, in celebration of the fun that gardens hold for kids. Haskins shares these values and is supporting young gardeners with suggested activities to connect with nature.

Haskins’ suggested activities for National Children’s Gardening Week, include:

  • Building a bug hotel – re-use outdoor waste to make a five star hotel for garden wildlife
  • Growing a bean stalk – put a bean in a jar with some kitchen roll, add water and watch it start to grow into a magic beanstalk
  • Creating a mini pond – use a container in a quiet part of the garden to help increase biodiversity
  • Going on a flower hunt – download the free activity sheet and see how many varieties can be found

Lisa Looker, brand director at Haskins, commented: “Our Garden Gang concept was designed to keep your outdoor busy bees entertained. We’re proud to offer a variety of puzzles and games in the Garden Gang section of our child-friendly website.

“Regular updates are now also posted on our new Garden Gang Facebook page, along with worksheets and helpful video content. We want to encourage kids to get outside, enjoy nature and have fun! National Children’s Gardening Week gives us the perfect opportunity to shout about what a great family activity gardening is.”
