Perrywood Garden Centres has today announced the purchase of Buckhatch Nursery & Garden Centre, located near Chelmsford in Essex. Perrywood now has three garden centres in Essex and Suffolk, with a combined turnover of more than £18m.

Simon Bourne, Perrywood Retail Director, says, “Buckhatch meets all our requirements, including location and buildings.  It is already a good quality garden centre. We can’t wait to work with the team to take it forward and add some Perrywood magic.”

Buckhatch Nursery & Garden Centre was bought from Lynda and Barrie Mortlock, siblings who own Ingatestone Saddlery, one of the largest equestrian and country stores in Europe. Lynda and Barrie bought Buckhatch in 2014.

Lynda Mortlock, co-owner of Ingatestone Saddlery, said: “We are delighted that Perrywood is taking on Buckhatch. We’ve put in a lot of hard work over the last ten years, but we know there is more Perrywood can achieve moving forward. We’ve loved working with the wonderful team at Buckhatch. They, and all our customers, are in good hands. We wish them well.”

It will continue to trade as Buckhatch Nursery & Garden Centre until it relaunches as Perrywood Buckhatch ahead of the 2025 Spring season.

Sturmer Nurseries sold to industry newcomers

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co has announced that Sturmer Nurseries in Essex has been sold to industry newcomers. The business features a contemporary garden centre and café building, as well as a large plant area and children’s play area...

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co has announced that Sturmer Nurseries in Essex has been sold to industry newcomers.

Located on the Essex-Suffolk border, the family-run plant nursery has been under the same ownership for two generations. The business features a contemporary garden centre and café building, as well as a large plant area and children’s play area.

The business was brought to the market as existing owners Robert and Samantha Mason looked to retire. Robert comments, “We would like to thank all our customers and suppliers over the past 42 years and wish Andrea and Flaviu every success in taking the business forward. We are delighted the business is staying as an independent, family-run enterprise.”

Sturmer Nurseries has been bought by Angela and Flaviu Andrea, who have extensive experience in the early years and wellbeing sectors.

Angela comments, “We aim to maintain the family-friendly atmosphere while rejuvenating the garden with a fresh nurturing approach. The vision being to engage all ages, including the youngest, in discovering the magic of gardening, aiming to transform the garden centre into a place offering not just a wide variety of plants but also a renewed sense of well-being.

“We plan to introduce interactive workshops, seasonal events, and educational programs that cater to both novice and experienced gardeners. Our hope is to create a vibrant community hub where everyone can share their passion for gardening and learn from one another.

“In addition, we are committed to sustainability and will focus on eco-friendly practices, such as promoting native plants, reducing waste, and encouraging organic gardening methods. We believe that by nurturing our environment, we can cultivate a healthier and more beautiful world for future generations. Together, let's grow, learn, and flourish.”

Tom Glanvill, Director at Christie & Co comments, “The garden centre industry provides an outstanding contribution to the national economy and fantastically diverse businesses that offer both retail and hospitality all on one site and are a great day out for the whole family. Sturmer Nurseries is another in the growing list of garden centres that have attracted entrepreneurs from other business sectors to come and run their own garden centre - indeed more than half of all the garden centres that we have sold in recent years have gone to buyers who have never owned a garden centre before.

“I would like to extend my congratulations to the new owners and look forward to seeing the new initiatives that they plan to introduce.”

In a year of continuing trading challenge with geopolitical instability, rising interest rates, consumer spending restraint and supply cost pressures, Notcutts saw both sales and profit up during the year. Annual turnover increased by 4.1% to £78.6m with operating profit up at £1.6m.

Commenting on these results, Nick Burrows, Chief Executive said “We continue to provide a strong offering that our customers rate favourably – as shown in our highest ever customer satisfaction scores in the year measured through NPS. Trading has begun to rebound, and we believe it will continue to do so as economic conditions improve”

Nick Burrows added “We have continued with our programme to develop our garden centre portfolio in order to support the ongoing prospects of the business. This has included the completion of our project to restore the historic Edwardian Messenger glasshouses at our Dukeries garden centre near Worksop; the expansion of our restaurant capacities in Oxford, Tunbridge Wells, Wheatcroft (Nottingham) and Norwich; and a solar power installation in Woodbridge. We have also made significant investments in our IT infrastructure with new retail, stock management and CRM systems during the year which will bring exciting new efficiencies and opportunities for our business.”

Caroline Notcutt, Vice Chairman highlighted the importance that Notcutts places on creating the right culture in which colleagues can succeed and enjoy their roles. “We were really encouraged to win the award for Best Employer in the East of England in retail and hospitality during the year. Part of the assessment of our organisation for this award was an in-depth survey conducted by the adjudicators amongst colleagues in a number of our garden centres.”

Caroline Notcutt added: “I am also delighted that our well-established approach to succession planning is bearing fruit with key senior operational leadership roles having been filled by our own internal candidates. We offer a range of training, coaching and personal development support to colleagues at all levels in Notcutts and it’s great that this can lead to genuine career openings and progression within our organisation”

Bridget McIntyre, Chairman explained that “Notcutts garden centres and support office have continued to work closely with our local communities supporting various charities and schools. We are into the third year of our charitable partnership with The Green Light Trust, whose mission is to ensure everyone has equitable access to the power of nature. They work with people of all ages, who are often more disadvantaged members of our communities, through organised outdoor activities in woodlands and green spaces. Alongside this each of our garden centres has developed partnerships with local charities and community groups – we see this as an important part of the role we play in each of our locations around the UK.”

Commenting on Notcutts environmental strategy, Nick Burrows said “We continue to have a clear policy and set of goals with biodiversity, sustainability and the environment key pillars of our ongoing strategy. Two years ago, we set a goal to reduce our carbon emissions by 15% by the end of 2023/24 and it is pleasing to see that we have been able to exceed this goal in this period. What’s more, in doing this we received a high commendation award from Planet Mark for the manner in which we have engaged colleagues throughout the organisation to help achieve this. We now have Sustainability Champions in every one of our garden centres.”

Nick Burrows added “As we continue to pursue our biodiversity goals, we have now introduced new wildlife gardens in all our garden centres for customers and colleagues to enjoy and where animals, birds and insects can thrive. In addition, with further rainwater harvesting investments – now in eight garden centres - we have capacity to harvest 190,000 litres of rainwater through these installations”

David Domoney and Blue Diamond complete another garden transformation on ITV

The wonderful impact of the spring Front Garden Facelifts meant that ITV’s This Morning had swathes of deserving applicants from across the country hoping to have their front gardens transformed by David Domoney and his team of volunteers.

David Domoney and his volunteers from Blue Diamond Garden Centre’s Beckworth Emporium and students from Moulton College at the latest garden makeover in Corby.

The wonderful impact of the spring Front Garden Facelifts meant that ITV’s This Morning had swathes of deserving applicants from across the country hoping to have their front gardens transformed by David Domoney and his team of volunteers. During the spring makeovers, David was keen to involve garden centre teams. Two of the makeovers have involved local garden centres from the Blue Diamond Garden Centres group, and one with the help of British Garden Centres, plus many other wonderful volunteers working to give deserving This Morning viewers the front gardens they deserve.

David Domoney, who has been campaigning for the revival of front gardens for over a decade, has this time come in live from Corby, and his volunteers from Blue Diamond Garden Centre’s Beckworth Emporium and students from Moulton College have taken up the makeover mantle once again and worked tirelessly to revamp this front garden within just 2 hours.

Ben Shepherd and Cat Deeley introduced David and his volunteers at 10 a.m. when they knocked on Rebecca Carey's door.

Rebecca has Multiple Sclerosis and was hospitalized for 2 months over Christmas last year after a fall down her stairs in November. During this stay in hospital, scans revealed that she had a diagnosis of early-onset dementia at the age of 51. Each of these diagnoses has resulted in Rebecca having to give up work, and using their front living room as her bedroom, which looks out onto her front garden.

In the UK, it is estimated that over 150,000 people are living with MS, and nearly 7,100 people are diagnosed with the condition annually. This includes 1 in every 450 people in England alone. One of the largest impacts those living with MS have found is that they felt increased loneliness and isolation as a result of their condition, the numbers being as high as 3 in 5 of those living with MS.

Early, working-age, or young-onset dementia is a prevalent condition in the UK, with over 70,800 people in the UK living with the early condition. This is classified as someone developing dementia before reaching the age of 65. Early-onset dementia is less likely to have memory loss as the first identified symptom and can also experience problems with mobility and coordination.

Spending time outdoors has long been proven to be a great benefit to mental and physical health. The sensory stimulation provided by the colourful plants, oxygen and clean air, sounds of pollinators visiting your plants, and the invigorating scents from all your different plants can all benefit your mental and physical well-being, particularly for those with limited mobility due to conditions such as MS. Plus, engaging with the garden and outdoor space is proven to boost mood, build new memories, and spark conversation with people living with dementia.

Before

After proving how much of a positive impact a revitalized front garden can have, David wants to motivate Brits to give their front gardens some love. David said, “When you’re coming home from either a long day at work, a busy trip, or even a visit to the shops, your front garden is the first part of your house that you see. By taking even a little time to add a couple of colourful plants to your home, your front garden space becomes an even more inviting space to greet you and boost your mood.”

After

Susan Titmuss, Head of Marketing and Communications at Moulton College added, “We were delighted to be able to contribute to creating a wonderful garden for Becky. It was an invaluable experience for our team of Royal Horticulture Society (RHS) part-time students led by their lecturer, Annette, and they all rose to the challenge for a very worthy cause."

“Transforming a garden within this time limit is hard work, but extremely rewarding,” continued David. “Thanks to the help of the students from Moulton College, Beckworth Emporium from the Blue Diamond Garden Centre group, Ames Tools, Tiller’s Turf, The Palm Tree Company, Emmitt Tool Hire, The Fun Blue Plaque Company and Hippo Waste, we were able to produce a cheerful and invigorating haven for a deserving This Morning viewer. Rebecca has had a challenging year, but we hope this garden will give her a revitalising space to enjoy from both indoors and outdoors.”

Eventually, David and his volunteers’ two hours were up, and it was time to show Rebecca her Mamma-Mia-inspired Front Garden Facelift. David took her on a guided tour, and she was emotional to see all the wonderful colours to enjoy. She looked forward to spending time sitting outside to take in all the vibrancy and cheer and take the opportunity to socialise with visiting neighbours. And the garden wasn’t the only surprise; David and This Morning also surprised Rebecca and 3 guests to go to the Mamma Mia party to celebrate her recent birthday too. The final touch once again was one of the very special Front Garden Facelift blue plaques.

“It was wonderful to see this garden makeover come together, and I’m so grateful to all the volunteers from within the horticulture community for taking the time to help. And it was so fun to work within a theme; I hope Rebecca enjoys the summery Mamma Mia atmosphere we have been able to put together for her,” David concluded.

After the success of all of the front garden makeovers so far, This Morning is planning for David Domoney to do more Front Garden Facelifts as part of the show.

Over the last two decades, Product of the Year has championed innovation in all its forms with 8-10,000 consumers voting for their best-loved products. Now, consumers can have their say, voting for the brands and products they rate the most. Winners will be revealed during an exciting awards ceremony at the legendary London venue, Quaglino’s, with an all-star cast of hosts and entertainment.

Product of the Year is not only a prestigious award but a proven ROI tool through sales and marketing. Over the years, its winners have enjoyed an average sales increase of 10-15% and the iconic red logo acts like a beacon to shoppers in a crowded market with so much choice.

“Innovation is at the heart of some of the UK’s finest gardening brands,” says Helga Slater, MD, Product of the Year. “Over the years, we’ve worked tirelessly to bring the recognition that products and brands deserve – and now we’d like to extend this to a wider pool of products and services than ever before. Whether you’ve launched a new product or service that customers love – let’s give them a forum to show their appreciation! But hurry as there’s only a few weeks till the final deadline. Don’t miss out!”

Garden centre sales up 8% year on year in August

The latest Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) Market Update for September 2024 reveals garden centre sales were +8% (vs. Aug 23), and garden category sales were +7% (vs. Aug 23). This uplift will provide a welcome springboard for autumn gardening categories such as bulbs in the coming months.

Non-gardening categories, such as catering, continue to perform strongly, underlining the strengths of garden centres as destinations.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA, commented: "With the weather constantly proving a challenge for our retailers, it’s encouraging to see gardening categories continuing to improve year on year. The strong August sales performance gives confidence and reassurance that consumer demand for gardening remains strong, with subdued sales months driven by the weather rather than any fundamental changes in consumer attitudes to gardening, gardens, or garden centres.

"In part, this consumer confidence is supported by continued wage growth relative to inflation in the cost of goods. Pay growth was 5.1%, which exceeded inflation and boosts – which means the pound in the consumer’s pocket, to some extent, is going further than a year ago. The industry continues to face cost pressures due to trade and labour, and even though global shipping costs fell substantially in August, they remain high compared to a year ago.

Our report shows the resilience of garden centres and their strength as community destinations, which we expect to see grow especially in the autumn months and before Christmas, although this doesn’t take away from how difficult 2024 has been for our retailers.”

For further details on the August 2024 market performance, please refer to the full HTA Market Update report, which is available to HTA members on our website.

Urban gardens strategy needed to ensure liveability of Government’s 1.5million new homes, says RHS

The RHS is calling for the provision of gardens to be central to UK housebuilding targets as it hosts more than 70 green infrastructure experts from around the world and housing crisis solutions are discussed at the Labour Party Conference this week...

The RHS is calling for the provision of gardens to be central to UK housebuilding targets as it hosts more than 70 green infrastructure experts from around the world and housing crisis solutions are discussed at the Labour Party Conference this week.

With more than four fifths of the UK population living in urban areas, ensuring the creation and maintenance of domestic and shared gardens are fundamental in building resilient communities says the charity.

Gardens and the cultivated plants within them offer nature-based solutions for climate adaptation and mitigation such as slowing the flow of rainwater, cooling and pollution capture, provide an all important home for wildlife and promote good health and wellbeing via food growing, promotion of physical activity and social engagement.

However, while developers are currently required to increase a site’s biodiversity provision by 10%, the measure of success – the Biodiversity Net Gain 4.0 metric - does not account for gardens nor the estimated 400,000 cultivated plant varieties thought to be found within them, overlooking them as an important tool in tackling environmental and social problems.

The RHS is calling for a review of the Biodiversity Net Gain 4.0 metric, updated planning guidelines to require cultivated landscapes, and garden masterplans for urban areas. Crucially these gardens or planted spaces might take on new and creative forms.

RHS Garden Wisley will host the III International Symposium on Greener Cities: Improving Ecosystem Services in a Climate-Changing World (GreenCities2024) from 25th-28th September under the aegis of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), where the latest research on urban greening will be discussed and global examples of success shared. These include:

  • The shoehorning in of gardens where space is lacking to strengthen urban resilience such as in Athens where disused railway lines, bridges and stations are being used to help mitigate the urban heat island effect and provide important corridors for the movement of pollinators.
  • The development of rooftop greenhouses on commercial high rises in Seoul for urban farming and which also reduce greenhouse gas emissions via the exchange of energy between office and growing space.
  • The installation of new green walls as part of the re-development of Turin which helped in providing all important eco-system services in a dense urban environment, including pollution capture, and showed that minimal urban greening interventions have a substantial impact on citizens’ well-being.

RHS own research too has been - and is - demonstrating what plants can help future proof towns and cities, including identifying the role of hedges in improving air quality, what garden trees will withstand and service needs in a changing climate, how water can be managed and retained in gardens and the science of green behaviours.

Alistair Griffiths, Director of Science and Collections at the RHS, said: “With plans for a once in a generation housebuilding spree, it is time for a collaborative and coordinated strategy that puts gardens and cultivated green spaces at the heart of our communities, leveraging their numerous benefits for many more people and providing space for active and not simply passive engagement with nature.”

The future of peat-free starts with Durstons

With a major new launch and their brand-new website now live, Durston Garden Products have their sights firmly set on a peat-free future and urge retailers to get on board now to ensure they have a peat-free offering that won’t disappoint and guarantees customers success.

With a major new launch and their brand-new website now live, Durston Garden Products have their sights firmly set on a peat-free future and urge retailers to get on board now to ensure they have a peat-free offering that won’t disappoint and guarantees customers success.

Figures presented by GfK at Glee highlighted the growing interest in peat-free products, with predictions that this demand is only set to climb further. Despite a delay with the market-wide ban, a peat-free industry is inevitable.

Durstons promised buyers they would be heading to Glee with a great story, and the family-run business didn’t disappoint. As well as showcasing their exciting new peat-free collection – which significantly outperformed not just competitor products in independent growing trials, but also professional grade mixes and even peat products – they also launched a new-look website this month to arm retailers with the tools they need to maximise sales in the category.

Heralding the start of a new customer journey, Durstons’ new website is more interactive, with great visuals, and fresh, engaging content. It is also much easier to navigate, with products clearly categorised and a dedicated trade area that provides retailers with sales support tools, including downloadable product images that stockists can use on their own websites or in marketing material.

With buyers clamouring for a peat-free range that really works and bemoaning results from other products in the market, there is no time to waste on suppliers that look set to disappoint your customers.

Simon Blackhurst (SJBQC Ltd), GMA chair and peat-free expert says: “There might be some uncertainty over the timeline of the peat ban but now is a fantastic time to get ahead, use peat free products and support gardeners with the transition.

“It has been so exciting to work with Durstons to ensure their peat free range of products is first class and consistent. They have invested heavily in infrastructure and are embracing the peat free notion.”

Simon continues: “Peat-free growing media does not behave like peat-based products – the nutrients and watering requirements are different, as is the aesthetic. We will all need to support our customers to grow, which in turn helps grow the industry. It’s worth highlighting that some products actually perform better than peat!”

Durstons’ brand-new peat free collection harnesses the power of two unique ingredients: Gro Fibre – the most consistent wood fibre available – and Gro Boost, which is 100% natural, renewable and vegan friendly. It was met with a great response from buyers visiting Glee this month and looks set to make waves in the category, as it outshines existing products in the marketplace.

Durston Garden Products Director, Dan Durston says: “I’m thrilled with our new range, it’s great for Durstons to move forward knowing we have an amazing offering that will perform extremely well and consistently.

“Retailers should be looking forward to the future without peat and ensuring they stock high quality peat free products. There’s little point in delaying the inevitable just because they keep moving the goalposts. Paying lip service to it and just being seen to stock something that makes sustainable claims isn’t good enough if those products don’t perform. We have developed a tried-and-tested, high-quality peat-free range that we know delivers consistent results, outperforming competitors along the way.”

Conifers are great autumn staple plants, often regarded as old-fashioned but deserve a second look. These evergreen trees offer a unique blend of beauty, practicality, and environmental benefits, making them a valuable addition to any garden. To celebrate National Conifer Week (21st to 29th September), the plant team at British Garden Centres has put together this guide on these often overlooked autumnal gems.

One of the most popular features of conifers is their year-round interest. Unlike deciduous trees that shed their leaves in winter, conifers retain their evergreen foliage and sprays throughout the year, providing a constant source of texture and colour, when other plants are dormant. Conifers come in many diverse shapes and sizes, ranging from towering pines to creeping junipers, allowing them to fit seamlessly into various outdoor settings.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, conifers also offer practical advantages making them appealing for the novice gardener. Many conifer varieties are drought-tolerant, making them ideal for dry weather. Their dense foliage can reduce privacy and noise, creating a more peaceful back garden. Also, conifers are relatively low-maintenance plants, requiring minimal pruning or feeding and provide valuable habitat for wildlife, offering food and shelter for birds, mammals, and insects.

When choosing conifers for your garden, it's important to consider your setting and where you want to plant them, soil conditions, and desired growth habits. Some popular conifer species include pines, spruces, firs, cedars, and junipers.

Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting, conifers offer a wealth of possibilities. Here are some specific conifer varieties that you may consider for your garden this autumn:

  • Juniperus squamata Blue Star: This dwarf juniper features silvery-blue foliage and a compact, spreading habit. It is an excellent choice for rock gardens or containers.

International, EU and UK horticultural and floricultural associations raise plant health cooperation at key trade forum

Union Fleurs, the Dutch Association of Wholesalers in Flowers and Plants (VGB) and the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) participated in the EU Domestic Advisory Group (DAG) UK – EU DAG and DAG Civil Society Forum meeting in Brussels on 19 - 20 September 2024...

Union Fleurs, the Dutch Association of Wholesalers in Flowers and Plants (VGB) and the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) participated in the EU Domestic Advisory Group (DAG) UK – EU DAG and DAG Civil Society Forum meeting in Brussels on 19 - 20 September 2024.

These meetings are constituted under the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA). They identify and work on key areas under the TCA, such as trade in goods, and will also focus on the upcoming TCA review in the coming months and years.

Through Union Fleur, VGB, and the HTA’s interventions, they raised the opportunity and need for a plant health agreement and succeeded in discussing the issue, specifically referencing plant health in the DAG joint statement. Achieving such an agreement would address many of the challenges, delays and costs faced by businesses in the UK and EU.

Sylvie Mamias, Secretary General, Union Fleurs commented:

“The flowers and plant supply chain are globalised, integrated and complex as operators are handling perishable goods that need as smooth logistics and processes as possible to supply the market with the largest choice of products. It requires predictability, a level playing field, and streamlined bureaucratic processes to thrive at best. The EU-UK trade in flowers and plants exceeds a value of 1,5 billion EUR annually and is vital for many of our members. Active cooperation between organisations of the sector on the EU and UK sides has been essential over the past years to monitor, identify and raise awareness towards policymakers on both sides of any supply chain disruptions as those generate a range of added costs on businesses and final customers. The Domestic Advisory Groups under the TCA offer a useful platform to voice priorities for the flowers and plant supply chain and advocate on any issues that need attention. We will continue our joint efforts and call for governments on both sides to focus on common grounds through an EU-UK Plant Health Agreement. We need an agreement to ease unnecessary and costly bureaucratic processes where possible, which should be achievable without compromising biosecurity standards on any side.”

Jennifer Pheasey, Director of Public Affairs, HTA commented:

“The HTA welcomes its appointment as a new member of UK DAG. These groups are an important consultative forum to advise on key challenges and opportunities for UK-EU trade. At these first meetings, we participated in Brussels, securing the visibility of both the environmental horticulture sector and the ambition we share with our sister associations for action on border issues and recognition of plant health regimes, which is a great outcome. Our active participation in the upcoming TCA review is well-timed. Both UK and EU governments must be aware of the impacts of friction in our EU-UK trading relationship on our member businesses and their customers and see our close cooperation and joint-working with EU and International Associations on these key issues.”

Tim Rozendal, Strategic Advisor, VGB commented:

“It was great to collaborate as EU-UK representatives of our sector, making a solid case to prevent further regulatory divergence. Instead, let's focus on the shared foundations of our SPS regulations and work towards restoring a plant health agreement, reducing unnecessary inspections, bureaucracy, and costs while maintaining our current high biosecurity levels.”

New products and new look for Marriage’s Small Animal Range

Marriage’s has expanded its small animal range to cater for the individual nutritional needs of five additional species beyond rabbits and guinea pigs. The new premium quality Nutri Pressed range is presented in eye-catching new packaging, with the option of pellets or mixes and a good choice of pack sizes.

The complete range of 13 products, formulated specifically for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, rats and mice, mark phase two of the brand’s distinctive new identity, which follows hot on the heels of their indoor and aviary bird relaunch last month.

Marriage’s new small animal range is produced using the advantageous Nutri Pressed method which combines expert nutrition with cool pressing technology, for superior nutrient content and flavour. Cooler processing temperatures help to retain more of the nutrients which may otherwise be lost during higher temperature manufacturing methods.

Each product is unique and has been meticulously formulated based on published scientific research to provide a wholesome, flavoursome and balanced diet that helps support optimum health and well-being. The herbivore diets for pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs are naturally high in fibre to help support digestive health. For pets such as hamsters and rats, who have a different digestive system with less reliance on fibre, Marriage’s has designed specific products to mimic their naturally omnivorous diet.

All the Nutri Pressed diets have added linseed, a natural source of Omega 3 and 6 to help support a healthy skin and coat, while a prebiotic helps to support a healthy digestive tract. There is no added sugar and no artificial colours, to ensure that every diet is as natural as possible.

“Bursting with tasty ingredients, our Nutri Pressed products are an exciting alternative to traditional extruded nuggets” said Sarah Kitson, Head of Marketing at WHM Pet Group (Marriage’s). “What we really love about our Nutri Pressed small animal feeds is how natural they really are. Due to the way that they are manufactured they are not over processed, which results in a whole host of benefits."

The new fresh-looking pack design brings a strong brand identity across the range. Clear product names and key call outs bring the product features and benefits to life on the pack face, for greater clarity of proposition on shelf. Every pack also includes the Marriage’s 6 Step Well-being Plan, providing useful feeding tips and helpful ways to support small animal health and well-being.

New pack sizes have also been introduced across the category to cater for customer purchasing requirements, with weights ranging from 750g all the way up to 10kg.

“At Marriage’s® we know that your customers want the very best for their pets and so do we.” said Sarah Kitson. “With our smart, new packaging on the outside and our new Nutri Pressed formulations on the inside, we are extremely proud to be able to provide optimum nutrition and the dietary preferences for each different species.”

RHS says plant crocus bulbs now to boost bumblebees next spring

The Royal Horticultural Society has shared results from a nationwide initiative to identify which plants are most visited by bumblebees in spring...

The Royal Horticultural Society has shared results from a nationwide initiative to identify which plants are most visited by bumblebees in spring.

The Bumbles on Blooms project, which ran between February and May this year, invited members of the public to observe bumblebee sightings on flowers in gardens and parks across the UK, and record their findings and photographs. The aim of the project was to find out which plants bumblebees rely on most heavily at a critical time in the year as they establish their colonies.

Over a thousand records from the public included at least 10 species of bumblebees and almost 350 different plants. The top three most sighted bumblebees that were identified to species were Early, Buff-tail and Common Carder.

The results indicate that of all colours, white-petalled flowers received more visits than any other from these vital pollinators. White was closely followed by purple and pink, which was reflected in the fact that the top five reported plants in the project included comfrey, crocuses, chives and heather. All five are popular with gardeners and offer reliable flowering from early to late spring.

Respondents were evenly spread across urban and rural areas although the highest number of sightings was reported in suburban locations with 40% more in these areas. It is thought that such locations on the edges of large towns and cities are important strongholds for bumblebees because of their mosaic of gardens and allotments.

At least 100 of the reported plants are not currently on the RHS Plants for Pollinators list suggesting bumblebees may rely on many more plants than previously thought, showcasing the adaptability of these pollinators in sourcing nectar and pollen during spring. Flowers showing promise include daffodil, snakeshead fritillary, camassia, Grevillea rosmarinifolia and Pittosporum tenuifolium.  The findings highlight the importance of planting a diverse array of species to better support bumblebees during the critical spring months when they are establishing their colonies.

Gardeners looking to attract bumblebees can do so by planting a mix of early-flowering species. Crocuses and chives can thrive in pots or alongside vegetable beds, while comfrey and dandelions work well in wildflower gardens and informal lawns. Meanwhile heather is a low-growing colourful evergreen shrub to provide ground cover in sunny spots.

Early autumn is a perfect time to plant shrubs, perennials and spring bulbs, while the ground is moist and temperatures still mild. For best results, plant in groups in sunny, sheltered parts of the garden to create bee-friendly patches, ensuring there are blooms available throughout the season to support the bumblebees’ ongoing foraging needs.

Helen Bostock, RHS Senior Wildlife Specialist said: “Bumblebees are a vital part of our ecosystem. Faced with large-scale changes to the countryside, flowers in gardens and parks are an increasingly important source of pollen and nectar for these precious pollinators. The prolonged, wet spring this year made it especially challenging for bumblebees to establish their colonies, so this project has been very timely. The public’s observations have highlighted the importance of a diverse range of plants in supporting bumblebee populations throughout spring. This data will help us refine our recommendations and encourage more gardeners to plant for pollinators, especially as autumn offers the perfect window for planting both spring bulbs and perennials.”

Dr Richard Comont, Science Manager at Bumblebee Conservation Trust, added: “Spring is a key time for bumblebees – it’s when queens are under maximum stress, foraging on their own as they establish their nests.  It’s fantastic to see so many people sent in sightings to the survey, and the information it has provided will be a huge boost to the survival of these iconic species.”

The Bumbles on Blooms project has been recognised as a Bees Needs Champion, one of 45 projects awarded by Defra in recognition of their efforts in championing pollinators in 2024.

Bumper crop of awards at Harrogate Autumn Show

Thousands of visitors enjoyed the stunning blooms and giant vegetables at this year’s Harrogate Autumn Flower Show where enthusiasts enjoyed a bumper crop of awards...

Thousands of visitors enjoyed the stunning blooms and giant vegetables at this year’s Harrogate Autumn Flower Show where enthusiasts enjoyed a bumper crop of awards.

Award-winning Newby Hall and Gardens, Ripon was the magnificent setting for the show, organised by North of England Horticultural Society (NEHS) and held between 13-15 September.

Now in its fourth year at Newby Hall and its 48th year since it was established in 1976, the show attracted thousands of visitors over the three days as well as hundreds of exhibitors, competitors and volunteers.

Taking centre stage this year were magnificent floral displays, delicious produce, expert gardening advice, along with live talks and cookery demonstrations.

The crowds were drawn to the Incredible Edible Pavilion to witness fiercely contested giant fruit and veg competitions where there was a record number of entries across the categories.

Stephen Purvis, from County Durham, won the coveted giant onion competition with his 7.6 kg (16.755 lb) specimen which was not quite enough to beat last year’s world record-breaking win of 8.9kg (19.7lb). Stephen also won the heaviest leek category with an impressive 8.960 kg exhibit.

The standard of entries in the Grand Floral Pavilion was something to behold with a record number of premier golds awarded in the traditional classes. There were spectacular displays of colourful dahlias, gladioli and carnations from specialist plant societies while dozens of top tier nurseries did a roaring trade selling hydrangeas, rudbekia and astrantia.

Best in show went to Plantagogo with its display of heucheras and tiarellas. The company has been exhibiting for over 25 years at the show while dozens of nurseries have been exhibiting for over 20 years. A number of long service medals were awarded this year.

Visitors to the show also enjoyed Newby Hall's award-winning gardens as well as stunning floral art installations within historic Newby Hall itself. Many of the creations were designed by students from local colleges keen on progressing careers in floristry.

Florist Charlotte Foster-Lill, 24, from Malton, dressed Newby’s Tapestry Room with dried and artificial flowers while outside she created a beautiful display on the hall’s front law using plants and fresh flowers.

Harrogate Flower Shows Director Nick Smith said: “This year was our biggest celebration of all things horticultural with over 200 exhibitors alongside 1,000 competitors across every category from dahlias and gladioli to cabbages and beetroot.

“The weather was largely kind especially on our opening day. Gardeners and horticulturalists from across the UK joined us at a show which proves year on year to be an inspirational weekend for gardeners of all abilities.”

The Harrogate Autumn Flower Show is one of two flower shows hosted annually by the NEHS, with the Spring Flower Show taking place in Harrogate in April. The team also delivers horticultural community activities as part of its charitable work and last year’s Autumn Flower Show committed over £163,000 to support the work of specialist societies and groups, and charitable horticultural organisations.

The free workshop provided a forum for growers to share their knowledge and brought together industry experts to speak on various aspects of peat-free growing, along with insight from the RHS Transition to Peat-Free fellowship.

Topics covered research and development of peat-free propagation materials, nutrition for peat-free propagation, and insights from growers and researchers. Speakers included Stephen Godfrey of Jiffy, Harry Downes of Wyevale Nurseries, Dr Raghavendra Prasad of the RHS, and Steve Chapman of ICL.

During the workshop, growers, growing media manufacturers, and industry peers discussed the latest insights into these areas and how they can be factored in to optimise peat-free propagation.

After lunch, the attendees also then had a chance to join a guided tour of WD Smith and Son Nurseries, Battlesbridge with Mike Smith.

Mike Smith, WD Smith and Son Nursery said: “Reducing and eliminating peat use in horticulture has been on the agenda for as long as I can remember. We’ve participated in some highly disappointing peat-free trials over the years, where poor-quality mixes produced very poor results. Still, in the last five years, the quality and consistency of the peat-free growing media have dramatically improved. Once confident we could not only source the material but also that it would run through our machines, we decided to move our finished product to a peat-free mix. We are about three years into the learning curve and are still tweaking as needed, but I am generally very pleased that the switch has been successful. This year, we moved all our propagation, both seed-raised and unrooted cuttings, to peat-free mixes. This has gone well, and being able to produce 100% peat-free products is great.”

Wayne Brough, Technical Horticulture Manager, HTA, said: “The HTA has always been committed to supporting its members in their transition towards peat-free plant production, and today's workshop at RHS Hyde Hall and WD Smith and Son (and the more in-depth RHS Fellowship project) emphasises the importance of sharing knowledge across the industry.

Many of our members are conducting peat-free trials, much like WD Smith and Son, and the sharing of this information and data with others in the industry is helping generate a collective knowledge base, avoiding any unnecessary repetition of work, minimising the cycle of making the same mistakes and underpinning an informed policy position, which is crucial to a successful transition.

Alongside the RHS, we will continue to provide workshops for our members, advocate for sustainable practices, and support them through their peat-free journeys, ensuring a sustainable future for British environmental horticulture."

Professor Alistair Griffiths, RHS Director of Science and Collections said: “The RHS were pleased to have partnered with the HTA for our latest grower's workshop, discussing the optimisation of plant propagation and establishment in peat-free growing media. As part of our peat-free campaign, the RHS supports the industry’s transition to peat-free horticulture. This move will help conserve our precious peatlands, which will positively impact nature and the climate. We want to thank all the speakers for sharing their knowledge and helping create a successful event.

"The RHS peat-free team will next be at the Southwest Growers Show on 2 October, and we look forward to welcoming many growers to our peat-free conference at RHS Garden Wisley on 28 November.

"All the resources from this workshop and all previous RHS peat-free events can be found on our website www.rhs.org.uk/peat

HTA calls on Defra minister for urgent action on border issues and communications

Following the recent holds on plant consignments at Sevington, the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has further written to the new Defra Minister responsible for borders to set out the cumulative impact of border disruption and delays on UK environmental horticulture and trading partners.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA said:  "The impact of UK border control implementation, delays and processes, including at the Government’s Sevington Inland Border Facility, are hitting HTA members hard in a very challenging year. The latest issues at Sevington have had a massive impact on several HTA members and are another cost on top of what has been building up since 30 April.

"The HTA has been directly supporting members and actively liaising with Defra and APHA for clarity on this specific issue, as well as a growing volume of the trade-related issues in recent weeks.

" Whilst we welcome the Government’s stated mission to reset the relationship with the EU, including supporting a new approach to EU-UK SPS arrangements, inclusive of the area of plant health, urgent action on the here and now is needed. It is unacceptable to have the lack of communication we have experienced, and we need prioritisation of action before this drastically risks the viability of the plant trade and business relationships.

"All parties involved in moving plants, trees, flowers, bulbs, and seeds between the EU and the UK are now doing so under maximum pressure, facing unmanageable increases in costs, experiencing painful border processes, and having minimal information with which to do it.

"We understand the previous Government initiated the BTOM policy. We approach our engagement constructively and are solutions-focussed. We have resubmitted our evidence-based impacts and ask for an urgent response and meetings."

It was smiles all-round as the 50th anniversary of Glee, taking place at the NEC Birmingham last week, proved to be a big hit with exhibitors and visitors. Everyone agreed there was a tremendous buzz around the show. GTN Xtra caught up with Show Director, Matthew Mein to get his feedback on how the three-day event was a huge success for the garden industry.

"I agree the buzz is back. I've been fortunate enough over the last two days to get around and talk to lots of different buyers about the show. I think there's just an overwhelming joy that we've moved the show to September. I think it's really been galvanized today by the feedback we've had. We've had so many great buyers coming in already over the last day and a half. The general feedback has been positive with lots of big buying groups right the way through to some of those smaller, independent garden centers who now have the availability to come to a show in September."

The Glee Daily News team have spoken to lots of retailers over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday, in fact, it's been difficult getting around the show without bumping into people that wan't to stop and say hello. They've all commented how good the show is, how they found loads of new stuff, they particularly like all the areas we're in Hall 9 where there are many smaller exhibitors. We really recommend anybody who comes tomorrow (Thursday) to come and visit the smaller stands in Hall 9 because there's just so much good stuff there for people to look at and buy.

Matthew added:  "The specific sectors where we are getting great feedback include retail services and experiences where there are some really interesting exhibitors that will help garden centres aid their business. Whether it's shop fitting right the way through to catering solutions. Then moving into the home and gift village, that's also in Hall 9, there are some really fantastic brands in there that will help, I think, especially pre-Christmas, to get some additional impulse sales.

"The other area, you know, which we've growth in this year is the pet section. There are some really interesting pet food brands and pet accessory brands at Glee 2024. Something again for garden centres to make their pet offering a little bit more interesting, a little bit more engaging. And again, thinking about the time of year, some of the product is regular weekly sellers like the pet foods, and also some of the of the gifting items or items to treat your pet, leading up to Christmas and beyond."

The exhibitors at Glee this year have really pulled out the stops, not just in terms of their stands and the way they look, but actually the quality of the new products that they've brought to the show and the new offerings of point of sale and new services.

"There's so much new to be seen," said Matthew, "I would say a lot of colour and vibrancy in everything that's going on with people's branding here at Glee.  Looking around the show, the interesting parts I've also found is the sustainability piece as well. Companies that are really looking at how their products are manufactured, made, and packaged.

"Talking to some of the exhibitors despite the UK weather not playing its part its part thsi year there's a lot of positivity looking ahead to next year. And that's the exciting bit. I think people wanted to come together and have that feel good factor saying, come on, let's get on with next year!"

Hozelock unveils new solar automatic watering system
GTN Xtra Promotion

Hozelock is expanding its extensive automatic watering offering with the launch of the new SolarDrip, an ideal solution for pots, flowerbeds and hanging baskets...

Automatic watering systems have become increasingly popular, allowing gardeners to take time off from manually watering the garden, while having peace of mind that the garden will stay hydrated even if you’re on holiday.

Hozelock is expanding its extensive automatic watering offering with the launch of the new SolarDrip, an ideal solution for pots, flowerbeds and hanging baskets.

This innovative solution is entirely solar-powered, enabling users to water up to 20 pots by harnessing the sun's energy, offering a complete and eco-friendly watering solution.

The timer features a large solar panel face, powering three rechargeable batteries, eliminating the use of electricity and effectively utilising renewable natural resources. A handy hook on the back of the timer allows it to be placed on a flat surface or hung on a wall or flowerpot for added convenience.

With 13 preset watering programmes, users have full control over the duration and frequency of watering, as well as the volume delivered per dripper.

Additional features include a ‘Rain Delay’ function, which pauses watering in response to weather forecasts, helping to conserve water, and a ‘Water Now’ function for immediate watering at any time.

Operating on a water reserve and compatible with rainwater collectors like water butts, the Hozelock SolarDrip not only reduces household water consumption but also takes advantage of rainwater harvesting.

The new SolarDrip, which was previewed at Glee, will officially launch in February 2025 and will be available in all good garden centres, with an RRP of £124.99.
