SDEA Launches LearnVM, a new online course in visual merchandising and retail experience design

The Shop & Display Equipment Association (SDEA) has launched LearnVM, a new online course in Visual Merchandising and Retail Experience Design. Available now at www.learnvm.co.uk, the course is designed for anyone looking to start or develop a career in visual merchandising and retail design, and can be studied entirely online at the learner’s own pace.

LearnVM is designed to open up the industry to those who may not be able to attend a full-time, college-based course, whether because of cost, location or other commitments. By delivering the training online and at a flexible pace, the SDEA aims to make professional visual merchandising skills more accessible and to support the next generation of talent entering the sector.

The course is made up of 12 comprehensive modules and works as both an introduction for newcomers and a top-up for those already working in the industry. It covers the fundamentals of visual merchandising, including presentation, product grouping, composition, lighting, props and production management, alongside the skills shaping retail today, such as AI, digital, technology and sustainability. Learners also explore how to build brand identity by telling clear, cohesive stories across all channels.

The course was created by Barbara Chapman and John Abbate, two industry professionals with more than 35 years of retail display experience between them, including work with retailers such as Ralph Lauren, Selfridges and Oasis. Each learner is supported by a personal tutor who provides feedback on every assignment. The course can be completed on a computer, tablet or phone, with up to two years to finish.

On completion, learners receive an accredited SDEA Certificate, recognising the training across the retail design and display industry.

SDEA Director, Antony Behiels, commented: “LearnVM makes the knowledge and experience within our industry available to anyone, wherever they are and whenever it suits them. We’re proud to offer a course that combines the craft of visual merchandising with the skills retail needs today, taught by people who have spent their careers doing the work. Whether you’re just starting out or building on existing experience, it’s a real opportunity to grow.”

LearnVM is available now. To find out more about the course, the modules and the tutors, or to enrol, visit www.learnvm.co.uk.
