The nominations are, in alphabetical order:

Most Influential Person of the past 50 years

The Character of Glee's 50 years

Hero Product of the past 50 years

Hero Plant of the past 50 years

Voting closes at midnight on Tuesday 3rd September and the results will be announced at Glee 2024, on The Stage at 5:00pm, Tuesday 10th September.

Glee takes place at the NEC in Birmingham, Tuesday 10th to Thursday 12th September 2024.  www.gleebirmingham.com

As the Glee exhibition gets set to celebrate half a century at the heart of the garden retail sector, the organising team is looking for your input. In the past 50 years, Glee has seen thousands of exhibitors and visitors pass through its doors, with hundreds of thousands of new products launched since the show’s humble beginnings in 1974. To celebrate the newness and passion that have shaped Glee and the broader garden centre market during this time, the hunt is now on to find the people and product that have driven the most change over the past five decades.

Whether advocating for sustainability or using their influence to increase the reach of horticulture, many diverse people have left their mark on the world of garden retail. They might be suppliers, retailers, industry pundits, or those who have undertaken roles across the full spectrum. Whatever their role, all of them have been integral to Glee's growth, and their work has helped maintain gardening as one of the nation's best-loved pastimes.

Or perhaps the best memories of Glee involve a larger-than-life character. This person may play a starring role in Glee’s memoirs, providing endless smiles, friendly advice and happy recollections from those that knew them pacing the aisles of shows gone by.

Like the people who create them, gardening products have also generated pivotal moments of change. From finally tackling an age-old problem, formulating an innovative bestseller opportunity, opening a meaningful dialogue about gardening's impact on the planet, or simply using technology to make gardening more accessible for the modern consumer, there have been many hero products over the past half century.

Now is the time for Glee's audience to vote for their own heroes and celebrate the people and product they think have had the most impact on Glee's future and that of the garden retail sector.

Matthew Mein, Event Director at Glee, said: "The gardening world has changed so much from the early 70s, with each decade ringing in exciting new trends and innovation. Throughout all of this, Glee has maintained a constant presence, year-after-year providing a place where the garden retail sector can come together to inspire, network and educate. Now, we want to celebrate those who have left a mark in a fun and reflective look back on Glee's half-century. We're excited to see the nominations, find out the eventual winners, and are prepared for a tidal wave of nostalgia and questionable haircuts!"

How to vote:

Working in partnership with Glee's media partner, Garden Trade News, voting starts on Tuesday 20th August via GTN Xtra and Glee Daily News and closes at midnight on Tuesday 3rd September 2024.

Glee connects the garden industry to inspire change, drive growth, and promote innovation. To find out more or to register your interest in exhibiting, please visit www.gleebirmingham.com or call +44 (0)203 3545 9752.

Dobbies refuses to comment on restructure plan rumour

Dobbies Garden Centres has refused to comment on speculation that the company is planning a major restructure which could lead to store closures and substantial rent reductions...

Sky News reported that Dobbies was working on a restructuring plan, claiming that advisers from FTI Consulting have been brought in to work on the proposals.

Dobbies, controlled by major American investor Ares Management, is grappling with widening losses, which reached £130 million in its latest annual results, up from the £21.3 million loss reported the previous year. The garden centre group blamed unseasonable weather and high inflation for the disappointing figures.

The company has 77 stores across the UK with a workforce of 3,700, and it’s unclear how many with be affected by a restructuring plan.

Sky News says if the proposals are not approved by creditors, an insolvency process of some kind is likely.

GTN Xtra approached Dobbies for comment but a spokseperson for the company said: "We have no comment to make on this."

Sainsbury’s announces acquisition of 10 Homebase stores

Sainsbury’s has reached an agreement to acquire 10 leasehold stores from HHGL Limited, trading as Homebase, for conversion into Sainsbury’s supermarkets. The transaction is expected to complete in early September.

A key ambition of our Next Level Sainsbury’s plan is to offer more food choice to more customers. The acquired stores are in key target locations that will grow Sainsbury’s supermarket coverage across England, Northern Ireland and Scotland, bringing Sainsbury’s quality and value to new customers and communities.

Once they are converted, the shop floor area of the stores will range from approximately 15,000 to 40,000 square feet and will add a total of around 235,000 square feet to our supermarket trading space. The addition of new locations means nearly 400,000 more people will be within a 10-minute drive of a Sainsbury’s supermarket. The new stores will showcase Sainsbury’s latest food offer with a refreshed, innovative look and feel and excellent sustainability credentials.

Sainsbury’s expect the stores to achieve strong returns, with return on capital employed in the low teens, comfortably in excess of Sainsbury’s cost of capital. We will open the first of these stores next summer and we aim to complete the conversion of all sites by the end of calendar year 2025, with capital expenditure relating to acquisition and fit-out costs incurred across financial years 2024/25 and 2025/26.

The gross investment value of the acquisition, being the total capitalised cost of leases, acquisition premium and fit-out costs, is expected to be approximately £130 million.

Our free cash flow targets remain unchanged; we continue to target delivery of at least £500 million retail free cash flow in financial year 2024/25 and at least £1.6 billion retail free cash flow over the three years to financial year 2026/27.

The conversion of these sites into supermarkets is expected to create approximately 1,000 new Sainsbury’s roles. Sainsbury’s will guarantee an interview for any Homebase colleagues who are placed at risk of redundancy as a result of this transaction.

Simon Roberts, Chief Executive Officer, J Sainsbury plc said: "Sainsbury’s food business continues to go from strength to strength as we push ahead with our Next Level Sainsbury’s plan. We have the best combination of value and quality in the market and that’s winning us customers from all our key competitors and driving consistent growth in volume market share. We want to build on this momentum which is why we are growing our supermarket footprint. Our ambition is to be customers’ first choice for food and these new stores will showcase some of the best that Sainsbury’s supermarkets have to offer to even more communities around the country.”

The Homebase stores Sainsbury’s is acquiring are:

  • Homebase Birmingham Sutton Coldfield
  • Homebase Bromsgrove
  • Homebase Cromer
  • Homebase Derry/Londonderry
  • Homebase Fareham
  • Homebase Inverurie
  • Homebase Lowestoft
  • Homebase Newark
  • Homebase Omagh
  • Homebase Rugby

UK horticulture businesses hit with new Brexit inspection charges amid biosecurity concerns

UK horticulture businesses are facing new Brexit inspection charges amid concerns about biosecurity. These charges, known as the Common User Charge (CUC), have been implemented at Sevington for plant imports from the EU, placing increased financial pressure on businesses, particularly smaller ones. Despite being intended to help finance biosecurity measures, the level of inspections remains low, leading to worries about whether the checks adequately protect UK biosecurity.

In an online Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) meeting this week, members raised several critical issues with the current inspection system. According to a member poll, 44.8% of respondents have received invoices for the CUC, as not everyone imports via Sevington, but not everyone is satisfied with the costs. Additionally, 15% of respondents reported problems such as unexpected higher costs and confusion over charges. Businesses also face ongoing confusion due to the new system, which is marked by temporary solutions and unclear procedures. Consignments are frequently held at Border Control Posts (BCPs) without clear explanations, leading to missed delivery slots, delays, and increased costs.

In a recent Politico article, Jonathan Whittemore, Commercial and Business Manager at Johnsons Nurseries said that his team has had to conduct their own inspections due to the perceived inadequacy of APHA checks, leading to multiple re-checks and additional costs. He stressed that detailed inspections are crucial, especially for detecting diseases like Xanthomonas.

The HTA is regularly speaking with the Defra team to provide feedback on its members’ concerns and suggesting short-medium term support, such as improving the process for recovering held plants, with the HTA producing plant care guidance for port operators and Defra introducing a driver questionnaire at Sevington to ensure imports are in the right place with the right info. Their recommendations include establishing a single point of contact for real-time issue resolution, enhancing IPAFFS visibility for all stakeholders, and improving the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) to keep drivers informed about delays and issues with consignments.

The HTA and other trade groups continue to urge the government to address operational inefficiencies and the financial impact on businesses.

Sally Cullimore, Technical Policy Manager at the HTA, said: “As discussions continue and the peak import season for trees approaches, there is an urgent need for the government to resolve these issues and provide clearer communication, address operational challenges, and ensure that they achieve their intended biosecurity goals without unduly burdening UK businesses. We are following the discussions the Prime Minister is having with EU counterparts on an SPS agreement with keen interest. We want to ensure this includes a plant health agreement, and we are working with many sister organisations in Europe to talk about what that might look like to ensure strict levels of biosecurity but ease barriers to trade, which we are feeding back into the government.”

Greenfingers supporters take to the skies

During the next week supporters of the Greenfingers Charity will take to the skies to help raise vital funds to ensure the charity can build even more gardens at children’s hospices across the country...

During the next week supporters of the Greenfingers Charity will take to the skies to help raise vital funds to ensure the charity can build even more gardens at children’s hospices across the country.

With 12 gardens presently enjoying the Greenfingers treatment, the bravery of these ‘high flying challengers’ will go a long way in supporting the development of these exciting new garden spaces.

August 31st sees Klondyke’s Craig Price take to the skies with nothing but a parachute (and instructor!) strapped to his back as he completes his first ever parachute jump in aid of the charity. To date, Craig has raised just shy of £1,000, an incredible achievement which will no doubt help calm his nerves on the day!

A few days later (Tuesday 3rd September), a group of four will be strapping themselves to the roof of a WWII biplane as they take on a wingwalk challenge. Taking part will be Russell Thompson, Sales Merchandiser at the AMES Companies, George Summerscales from Klondyke, and Becky Rose of JBM Sales Ltd Returning once again will be Hornby George PR’s Kimberley Hornby George, who will be taking on the terrifying loop-the-loop!

Once the flight is underway, wingwalkers will only be able to communicate with their pilot via hand signals, as the plane performs daredevil flypasts, zoom climbs, steep dives and banks in front of friends and family. Greenfingers supporters are also welcome to come along on the day to encourage these courageous souls!

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at the Greenfingers Charity, said: “It never fails to amaze me just what people will do to support our work. The fact that people push their limits and face their fears all in the name of Greenfingers is so heartening and helps to promote our work to a wider audience. On behalf of all of us, particularly those that spend time in a Greenfingers garden, thank you from the bottom of our hearts! You are all amazing!”

The Greenfingers Wingwalk may only be a few days away but interested parties are still able to join in the fun. British Garden Centres supports Greenfingers and St Andrew’s Hospice with volunteer day

A dedicated team from British Garden Centres recently volunteered their time to support St Andrew’s Hospice in Grimsby. A dedicated team from British Garden Centres recently volunteered their time to support St Andrew’s Hospice in Grimsby. The green-fingered crew, made up of James Ducker, Events Manager, Eve Kerrigan, Content Creator, Jill and Phill from Brigg Garden Centre and ambassador Jayne Hickling lent their expertise to revitalise the hospice’s grounds and Greenfingers’ pirate-themed garden.

To maintain the garden’s splendour and ensure it and the hospice grounds continued to be a source of joy, the British Garden Centres team recently rolled up their sleeves to carry out essential tidying and maintenance work. With gloves, shovels and rakes in hand, their weeding and pruning breathed new life into this cherished space.

Created by the Greenfingers Charity in 2018, the special pirate garden offers a safe and therapeutic escape for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Originally a grassy area with limited accessibility, the garden was transformed into a magical pirate adventure, complete with sensitive lighting and a wheelchair-accessible water feature, to make a sensory-rich environment where children can explore, play, and have fun outdoors connecting with nature. British Garden Centres played a vital role in the garden’s creation by generously donating plants and ensuring a vibrant and inviting space for young patients and hospice staff.

Michelle Rollinson, CEO at St Andrew’s Hospice said: “We are extremely grateful for the help we have received from the team from British Garden Centres, who have spent today volunteering in the gardens at St Andrew's Hospice. The gardens play a vital part in the environment at the hospice. Our children and adult patients and their families, enjoy spending time in the gardens, being around nature, and spending time outside can significantly reduce levels of anxiety and improve wellbeing.”

Eve Kerrigan from British Garden Centres added: “British Garden Centres are a platinum partner with Greenfingers charity. We’re passionate about their work with building gardens for childrens’ hospices. Over the last 3 years, we have raised £60,000 for the charity and we have a strong bond with them, so wanted to get our hands dirty this time and get out to one of their gardens and help the volunteers create a lovely space for the people who stay here!”

Jayne Hickling, British Garden Centres ambassador and BBC Radio Lincolnshire Gardening Expert also joined the team to volunteer for the day and added: “I’ve been aware of Greenfingers probably for about 3 years now and British Garden Centres support the charity. The idea of gardening for wellbeing, and mental health is really important to me, personally, and enabling people who are going through difficult times actually to have access to green spaces is so important as a way for escape, getting in touch with nature and wellbeing for themselves. When they’re going through, physical trials, being able to just have that time out in a beautiful space is amazing.”

Linda Petrons from Greenfingers Charity said: “We were thrilled to welcome such an enthusiastic team of volunteers from British Garden Centres. The St Andrew’s Hospice garden is a vital oasis for children, their families, and staff, providing a precious space to relax, connect, and enjoy the outdoors. Thanks to the incredible ongoing support of British Garden Centres and so many others, we can continue creating magical outdoor havens in children's hospices nationwide.”

The Gardens Group brings responsibly sourced carnivorous plants back into houseplant range

The Gardens Group has reintroduced four species of carnivorous plants to its indoor plant range at Castle Gardens in Sherborne, Brimsmore Gardens in Yeovil and Poundbury Gardens in Poundbury...

The Gardens Group has reintroduced four species of carnivorous plants to its indoor plant range at Castle Gardens in Sherborne, Brimsmore Gardens in Yeovil and Poundbury Gardens in Poundbury.

Sarah, Emmelene and Katie, who run the houseplant departments, have spent months researching and gaining knowledge about these amazing plants and their global conservation status, with the aim of finding an ethical, reliable, and quality supplier.

Within the new range are, Sarracenia, which catch and digest insects in their trumpet-like upright hooded pitchers and ‘Monkey Cups’ (Nepenthes), that display pendulous lidded pitchers to trap insects. Sundews (Drosera) with sticky dew-drop-like tentacles and the Queen of Carnivorous plants, Venus fly trap (Dionaea muscipula) are also available at all three garden centres.

The carnivorous plant collections at each centre have been commercially grown to avoid any impact on native habitats and wild populations. As well as being evolutionary marvels, they are also a solution to naturally control pests at home.

Sarah, the centre manager at Castle Gardens, explains: “Responsible sourcing and minimising our impact on the planet is something we take very seriously at The Gardens Group, so we took the decision to remove these plants from our range until we were confident that we had found a suitable supplier. We are so excited to reintroduce these amazing plants, which have evolved over millennia to live in specific bog habitats, and we hope to inspire gardeners of all ages to explore natural pest control methods. We have planted a number of bog bowls to showcase the colourful displays that can be achieved at home, while creating a microclimate that allows other houseplants to thrive.”

Yorkshire garden centre group supports running challenge for gardening charity

Yorkshire Garden Centres' Commercial Director, Sharon McNair and Head of Finance, Katie Young, joined runner Kate Ebbens for a 5k run to celebrate the group's support for the Greenfingers charity which is dedicated to supporting life-limited children...

Two members of a Bradford-based garden centre group have joined a runner who is running every day to raise money for charity.

Yorkshire Garden Centres' Commercial Director, Sharon McNair and Head of Finance, Katie Young, joined runner Kate Ebbens for a 5k run to celebrate the group's support for the Greenfingers charity which is dedicated to supporting life-limited children.

Mrs Ebbens has pledged to run every day throughout 2024 and aims to raise £20,000 for the charity which creates beautiful, well-designed outdoor spaces for children in hospices to enjoy with family, friends and siblings.

Speaking about her ambitious challenge, Mrs Ebbens said: "Every single day, no matter the weather or mood, I will put on my running shoes and will tackle a run whether home or abroad. Over the last seven months, I have raised over £14,000 and run 900 km in every weather condition imaginable.

"To keep morale high and to ensure that I keep putting one foot in front of the other, 12 garden centres and suppliers have kindly sponsored me each month. I'm very grateful to the team at Yorkshire Garden Centres for sponsoring me for August and to Sharon and Katie for joining me on my Otley run in such scenic surroundings. Thank you for helping me to make a difference to life-limited children."

"We are proud to support Kate's challenge to raise money for Greenfingers and were delighted that she could come from her home in Saffron Walden to run from Otley Garden Centre. It was great to run with her and hear all about her plans for the rest of the year," said Ms McNair.

Greenfingers is a national charity that supports life-limited children and their families who spend time in hospices around the UK. It is driven by the belief that time spent outdoors, away from the bedside, can offer children and families under considerable stress a vital opportunity to embrace the benefits of being in the fresh air and engaging with the natural environment. It has created over 60 inspiring gardens in children's hospices around the country and has a further waiting list of hospices that need help.

The Yorkshire Garden Centres (YGC) group comprises Tong, Tingley, Otley and Bingley Garden Centres and the recently acquired Dean's York and Scarborough. Otley and Bingley Garden Centres were known as Stephen H Smith's before they were acquired by YGC in 2022.

The Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) Skills Competition at the BBC Gardeners' World Autumn Fair wrapped up this weekend with fantastic results. Two APL member teams faced off in the competition for a high-pressure showdown, with just 16.5 hours to build a 24m2 garden from scratch. The teams delivered such exceptional results that both gardens also earned prestigious gold medals from the event judges.

However, there could only be one winner of the APL Skills Competition and this year the title went toLandscapes By Design from Basildon, led by Rob and Alex. Their garden, Fiesta Flora, designed by Paul Newman of Designscape, captivated judges by blending the natural beauty of plants with the spirit of celebration and relaxation. The team’s meticulous attention to detail and commitment to precision secured their victory in what was described as an exceptionally close competition.

Tisserand English Gardens Ltd, based in Bishops Stortford, also received significant recognition. Their garden, There’s No Place Like Home, designed by award-winning garden designer Sarah Plested of Bramley Apple Garden Design, was also awarded "Best in Category" by the BBC Gardeners’ World Live (BBCGWL) team. This accolade was particularly impressive given the tight competition among three Gold medal-winning gardens.

The initial judging phase for the Skills Competition was conducted by industry experts Steve Smith and Phil Tremayne, who evaluated the gardens based on accuracy to the specified design, overall finish, and aesthetic appeal.

Phil Tremayne, General Manager of the Association of Professional Landscapers said: "This year's competition was one of the closest we've ever seen. The competition was fierce, with only a 1% difference in scores between the two teams, highlighting the incredible skill, technical ability and speed demonstrated by both. Both teams delivered exceptional gardens that not only met but exceeded our exacting standards. It's a testament to their hard work and dedication – both teams were amazing"

Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) Landscaper Skills 'The Professionals' competition took place at the BBC Gardeners’ World Live Autumn Fair within the grounds of Audley End in Cambridgeshire.

For the past eight years, the APL has also been the organising partner for the World Skills UK Landscaping competition, where individual contestants, including college students and apprentices, undertake the challenge of building a 12 m2 garden from a provided design in just 16.5 hours. These gardens are meticulously judged against specifications, with tolerances as fine as 2 to 5mm.

Autumn Fair, retail’s leading seasonal showcase for Home, Gift and Fashion, opened today and saw thousands of buyers walking the aisles looking to discover the latest products and hidden gems for their stores.

The four-day show is the key seasonal buying event for many independent businesses across the UK to refresh their store and stock up shelves in time for the festive period, and reports from a busy first day indicate positivity, plenty of order writing, and highlighted the importance of seeing products and people in person.

A huge variety of big name retailers, department stores, garden centres, activity centres and independent retailers attended including Tesco, Poundland, Elphicks, Blue Diamond, NHS, Willows Activity Far, Willowbrook Garden Centre, Blue Tiger, Leonards Hardware, Island jewellers, Diageo, Newbank Garden Centre, Roys of Wroxham, Collins Group, Boyds Stores Ireland, Baldwins Department Stores, Madison and Mayfair, Wrights Hardware, DFDS Ferries, Longacres Garden Centre, West Country Retail, Wilkies Trading, Graham and Green, The Toy Barnhaus, Tilley and Grace, Howleys, Gift Box London, and Southwold Pier.

Soraya Gadelrab, Event Director of Autumn Fair says, “We’re buzzing with excitement as we welcome over 12,000 buyers this week to explore the most diverse and inspirational display of new products from over 800 incredible suppliers. Autumn Fair is the perfect time to discover and stock up for the peak retail season and the first day has been very busy with a lot of positive feedback.”

The view from the show floor was very upbeat. Josie Rossington, Owner of Follie in Lincoln highlighted how important it is to see products in person saying, “It is always important to come to Autumn Fair, you never know if you are going to miss something. You can't do everything online, you need to see the product, smell and touch it, especially in gifting, and I always like to hear the stories behind the brands, too. It makes our sale more interesting in store. Trade shows are great as you can keep the relationships going with existing suppliers. It is my store's 20th birthday and I'm planning some ideas in store and some of my existing suppliers have been so helpful here today.”

Feedback from exhibitors across the Home, Gift and Fashion destinations was optimistic. Jason Bensohn, MD of returning brand One.World said, “We haven't attended the show since pre-Covid, it has been great. It’s good to see old faces and for new accounts to discover us. It’s been really positive.” Kerry Singh from Final Touches said, “The show has been full, we didn't expect it to be so busy. We have taken orders earlier on in the day than usual and seen lots of positive buyers which is an exciting start to the show.”

Paul Connett, Director of My Gifts Trade has used Autumn Fair as the launchpad for new product collections, he said, “We are launching our Easter range from Cosy Home at the show and new brands from Holland such as Tokyo Design Studio, Dutch Decor and Hoii. We also have a range called Sardines which is exclusive to us in Europe and brand new here. We are adding categories to our range, including candles and soft furnishings so we are managing to cross sell to our existing accounts and are hoping for a busy final quarter. We have seen independents and some new accounts coming through.”

Brett Smith, MD of greetings card exhibitor Emotional Rescue has enjoyed the opportunity to network, saying “We have been in independents for 3 years now and we have seen a lot of familiar faces at the show. It's great to catch up with people we know, and we have seen plenty of buyers coming in.”

The mood in Moda has also been upbeat with reports of new discoveries and plenty of order writing. Irene Harvey, Owner of Velvet & Cream in Wiltshire loves the opportunity to discover newness, “It is the first time I have visited on a Sunday and I will definitely come again next season. I have found Beau Moda, they caught our eye because they are really different. The bags are superb! This is why we come to Autumn Fair, to find something new.”

James Rowley, Owner of Sleek Boutique, Nantwich said, “It's been bouyant, we walked in and there was a buzz. We come to Moda to find ladies clothing and it's been much busier than previous visits. We have found some new suppliers which is good.” Ben Adams, Owner of exhibitor Suzie Blue says, “It’s been a good start, we have seen a mix of existing and new buyers and have written quite a few new orders.”

Merchandising Masterclass

Visual merchandiser Debbie Flowerday stepped inside The Autumn Fair Emporium, a shop front created from recycled cardboard by N Smith, to help retailers take their store front displays to the next level with an exciting live window dressing. Today’s session focused on Pyramid Dressing featuring wooden toys from Orange Tree Toys and lighting from Gingko. Flowerday said, “You only have a couple of seconds to capture someone’s attention as they walk past your store,” and she stressed the importance on buying in stories and demonstrated how to use a pyramid system to create harmony and ambiance.

Luke MacFadyen, Owner of Fig1in Bristol attended and said, “As a small business owner, being very busy wearing lots of hats, it was great to listen to a professional and get an insight from someone whose job it is to merchandise. We had time after the masterclass to ask individual questions, and show our shop display to get some ideas, it was extremely helpful.”

Paula Hunault from XO-CU Ltd, London also enjoyed the session, “As a new brand, it was really helpful to attend the Masterclass. With a variety of products to display I always find it challenging to organise my stock so this was really helpful.”

Judith Evans, Owner Williams of Audlem, South Cheshire said, “I saw the Merchandise Masterclass in the trade press and it’s one of the main reasons I came today. I really enjoyed it! It was informative, and I spent time afterwards in the Q&A. It's a great show, we have found it to be very busy. I have found some new suppliers and it's great to see new ranges from our existing ones.”

With 38% of the show featuring new exhibitors and 30% exclusive, Autumn Fair offers retailers access to thousands of innovative products that cannot be found elsewhere. It is the only place to see so much newness at this time of year in person. The exclusive selection allows retailers to strategically refresh their product lines mid-year, top-up on bestsellers, and ensure they stay ahead of emerging trends and shifting consumer demands.

Visitors also enjoyed the host of new buyer attractions, partnerships and exclusive offers which launched at the show designed to make their buying journey easier and more enjoyable. In the Buyers Lounge, the Ambience Clinic offered buyers advice to help them transform their retail experience. Stephen Spencer, Ambience Director of the Ambience Clinic said, “We have had some very interesting conversations with people looking to grow their business from an early stage, both online and physical stores. People have really enjoyed the ambience we created with exhibitor’s products and the Blooms by Samuel Baker have been a huge hit. The Autumn Fair ambience soundtrack has reminded people that the music they play in their store not only affects mood, but creates value, appropriate to brand or season, through all their senses.”

The Ambiance Clinic continues at the Buyers Lounge in Hall 7 tomorrow – spaces are limited so advance booking is recommended.

Tomorrow’s Merchandising Masterclass is focused on Repetition Dressing and starts at 10am with Q&A at 12pm and 3pm at the Buyers Lounge, Hall 7.

Invisible Creations is launching its new Garden Accessibility range at Glee. Inspired by the challenges faced by the founder’s grandmother, director Laura Wood has developed a range of products that blend style and functionality, ensuring that gardens remain safe, accessible, and beautiful.

Gardens are more than mere outdoor spaces; they are sanctuaries where we connect with nature, relax, and find solace. Gardening enriches our lives by boosting physical strength, cognitive function, and social interaction. Yet, as our needs and abilities evolve, enjoying these spaces can become increasingly challenging.

Traditional safety features often compromise the beauty of our gardens, which can discourage people from enjoying these spaces due to concerns about falls and accessibility. As the need for practical yet aesthetically pleasing solutions grows, Invisible Creations is redefining the narrative around garden accessibility. We believe that safety and style can coexist, ensuring that everyone can confidently enjoy their outdoor spaces without sacrificing visual appeal.

“We believe that gardens are our sanctuaries, and our enjoyment of these spaces shouldn’t be limited or defined by circumstances outside of our control,” says Laura. “Our products are crafted not only to elevate outdoor aesthetics but also to provide peace of mind. We’re making accessibility an integral part of design, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a beautiful life in a beautiful space."

Invisible Creations’ latest innovations include garden products such as path lights, planters, and pots that discreetly double up as sturdy, ergonomic outdoor grab rails. These products are specifically designed to provide stability and support in areas with uneven, wet, or cluttered pathways and steps. These are not only functional but also stylish, blending seamlessly into garden décor, offering both support and beauty.

Key Features of the Garden Accessibility Range:

  • Stylish Design: Our grab rails are designed to complement the natural beauty of gardens, ensuring that safety features enhance rather than detract from the overall aesthetic.
  • Functionality: Our products provide essential support, helping to prevent falls and allowing individuals of all abilities to navigate their gardens with confidence.
  • Quality Craftsmanship: Built with high-quality materials, our products are durable and weather-resistant, ensuring they maintain their appearance and functionality over time.

As customer needs evolve, there is a growing demand for accessible garden products that cater to all abilities. Garden centres have an opportunity to tap into this market by offering products that ensure safety without sacrificing style. Invisible Creations' dual-purpose grab rails present a unique offering, by eliminating the stigma of traditional safety aids while enhancing the beauty of outdoor spaces.

Lots of our customers attend, so it’s a great place to meet and catch-up and we’d like to invite everyone over to our stand during the event for a coffee and to chat through our British-grown, native container tree range.

“We will have five of our Best of British specimens on the stand. This range will give all-year-round availability of native trees for planting schemes, which is a key trend and demand we’re seeing from the amenity sector at the moment.

“We’re inviting everyone interested in finding out more to come and see Sales Director, Kersten Catella, Amenity Sales Manager, Andy Congera, Landscape/Amenity Sales Key Account Manager, John Lawrence, Garden Design and Domestic Landscape Sales Manager, Adrian Hoare and Amenity Sales Executive, Dan Maskew, who will be staffing our stand at D37-38 during the two days.

“We are currently undergoing a large development of our container tree production site. The main objective of our project is to meet an ever-growing demand for container trees from our customers and produce them ourselves improving our overall carbon footprint. The target is improving our container tree lifting capacity by up to 15,000 trees annually depending on size. In terms of environmental sustainability of our operations, we use peat free compost and will be recycling rainwater going forward.”

Its main business is to supply landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters, landowners and garden centres with a comprehensive array of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants.

Grovewell Folkestone Garden Centre is set to undergo a £3m development, which will include a larger restaurant, new car park and children’s play area.

“It’s already quite a busy store, but the facilities are very dated and, to be honest, I have struggled to make a profit there,” owner Edward Boult told Kent Online.

“I think that with these changes, it will make everything more efficient for us, and with that it will make the whole operation easier.

“We want it to be a quality garden centre of nice appearance.”

Rush of customers at closing-down garden centre

A Norfolk garden centre, offering discounts of 50% in a closing down sale, had to shut down early at the weekend after a rush of customers...

A Norfolk garden centre, offering discounts of 50% in a closing down sale, had to shut down early at the weekend after a rush of customers.

Garden Centre Overstrand, near Cromer, announced “with a very heavy heart” that it had taken the decision to close-down, with the final day of trading being September 20.

In the lead up to the closure, the garden centre said “everything in the store was now 50% off.”

But after a rush of customers eager to take advantage of the huge discounts, the centre posted on its Facebook page: “We have made the decision to close the gates to the centre with immediate effect for the rest of the day. This will ensure the safety of our staff against members of the public who seem to think it’s OK to fill trolleys to the brim and then complain about queues to pay and to get their cars into the centre. A sad state of affairs.”

Twenty-four hours later it posted a second message: “Well, what a day, we had to close gates mid-afternoon to keep our brilliant staff sane and safe. Again a few individuals spoilt it for the majority. Our fantastic team are actually lovely human beings and to witness the way thay have been treated by "customers" over the past 2 days has be unreal. BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair announces Beautiful Borders winner

Amy Drewitt, a project manager and garden design student from Sunningdale has won Best Beautiful Border and a Platinum award at the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair, in association with English Heritage, taking place at Audley End House and Gardens, Saffron Walden from 30 August-1 September.

Amy Drewitt, a project manager and garden design student from Sunningdale has won Best Beautiful Border and a Platinum award at the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair, in association with English Heritage, taking place at Audley End House and Gardens, Saffron Walden from 30 August – 1 September. The designer scooped a second accolade as winner of the BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Subscriber Border Award. Awards were presented to designers on the eve of the Autumn Fair before opening to the public.

Always popular with visitors to BBC Gardeners’ World events, the Beautiful Borders are compact 3m x 3m miniature show gardens, imaginatively designed and planted. They offer creative inspiration and achievable ideas for smaller gardens and challenging spaces. This year’s Beautiful Border theme was ‘Share My Space’, highlighting the power of gardening to create a sense of community. Nine designs were selected for the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair.     The winning Border, The Daisy Chain, was inspired by Amy’s thoughts on how a family shares a garden space. It is designed to connect all generations of a family through exploration, nature and play. Highlights include soft planting and sensory elements like sound cushions, a pool with a solar fountain, a buried trampoline, tree-hanging bells and birch tree trunk seating that doubles as a play tunnel and balance beam.

Amy, who is studying with the British Academy of Garden Design, said: “I wanted this space to feel inviting rather than somewhere children would be told to stay off the lawn or away from the plants. I’m blown away by winning this award and really can’t believe it’s happened. Creating a Beautiful Border for the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair has been an amazing experience and I’ve learnt so much from everyone involved.” Assessors for the Autumn Fair’s Beautiful Borders were gardening editor, horticulturalist and journalist, Ian Hodgson, and award-winning garden designers, Pip Probert from BBC Two’s Your Garden Made Perfect and Outer Spaces Landscaping & Design, and Mike Baldwin, landscape and horticulture lecturer at Derby College. Pip and Mike have built more than 75 show gardens between them, with Mike receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live for his exceptional contribution to horticulture.

Chair of assessors, Ian Hodgson, said: “Amy Drewitt’s The Daisy Chain is such a fun garden, we could really imagine children enjoying the trampoline and stepping stones. It is more than a garden, it’s a living space.”

Best Interpretation of the Theme was awarded to Chelmsford horticulturalist, Zoe Defoe, for her Border, Talk in Space. The design highlights the mental health and therapeutic benefits of sharing space and conversation, surrounded by nature, and features a central firepit with Phormium ‘flames’ surrounded by log seats, mounted planets and dry planting. Zoe lives with Addison’s disease, a rare adrenal disorder, and will use the garden to raise awareness and funds for the Addison’s Disease Self Help Group charity which supports people living with the disorder.

Receiving her award, Zoe said: “I’ve loved building the Border and it feels amazing to have won this award. I’m so excited that my interpretation of the theme was appreciated by the assessors. My Border is a space for people to sit together and talk which represents what the Addison’s Disease Self Help Group does.”

Head assessor, Ian Hodgson, said: “We loved the planetary theme and interpretation of ‘space’ and could picture sitting around the Phormium fire, arguing which planet to sit next to. The assessors have been astonished at the range of interpretations of the ‘Share My Space’ theme this year. No garden is the same and there is some very artful planting and real innovation.”

Visitors can vote for their favourite Beautiful Border throughout the Autumn Fair. The People’s Choice award will be announced on Sunday afternoon. Rachel Poletti-Gadd, Portfolio Director - Gardening Division at Immediate Live, organisers of the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair, said: “The Beautiful Borders never fail to impress and always inspire visitors with their creativity. We’ve been thrilled at the number and quality of entries this year. Each designer brought their own individual vision of the Share My Space theme to life which gave the assessors a very tough job. Our congratulations to Amy and Zoe for their fantastic Borders which we know will spark new ideas for Autumn Fair visitors.”

The BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair, in association with English Heritage, takes place at Audley End House and Gardens from 30 August – 1 September. Along with the Beautiful Borders, event highlights include a collection of inspiring new Showcase Gardens by designers David Hurrion, Pip Probert and Val Christman, a display garden by Beth Chatto’s Plants & Gardens, plant displays by specialist growers and nurseries, and the Association of Professional Landscapers’ Skills Competition and Design Clinic. At the BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Stage, BBC Gardeners’ World TV presenters Adam Frost (Friday), Joe Swift (Saturday) and, new to the Autumn Fair, Rachel de Thame (Sunday) will be in conversation with the Magazine’s editors, sharing seasonal tips and advice.

At the new Get Growing Stage, TV chef Marcus Bean (a new face at the Autumn Fair) will be hosting a daily programme of sessions with expert produce growers, like Adam Kirtland on easy garden upcycling, Kim O’Brien on successful dahlia growing and Sara Ward on how to ferment pickles. There are garden tours led by the Autumn Fair’s Plant Experts, hands-on workshops like bug hotel making and autumn bouquets, and historical performances to enjoy. There’s plant and garden shopping galore featuring many exhibitors that are new to the Fair, and plenty of great food and drink to enjoy and take home at the Good Food Market.

Autumn Fair tickets include access to Audley End’s grand mansion with its great hall, state rooms, dressing rooms, servants’ wing, stables and chapel, and the organic walled Kitchen Garden, grounds, gardens, parklands and children’s play area. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds.

Dobbies prepares for blooming colourful autumn

Dobbies Garden Centres is preparing for a colourful autumn as it welcomes 49,000 Chrysanthemum balls into stores this August.

Loved for their eye-catching flowers and versatility, Chrysanthemums are the perfect plant to inject instant colour into borders and containers this summer, with vibrant blooms that will last throughout autumn and help you extend the sunny season in your garden.

Dobbies’ Plant Buyer, Nigel Lawton explains why he thinks Chrysanthemums are expected to be a favourite among Dobbies customers this year. He says: “Chrysanthemums are always a popular plant in late summer as gardeners prepare their outdoor spaces for autumn. However, this year we’re expecting them to appear in even more borders and containers as people shift away from neutral colour palettes and embrace maximalism and colour.

“After a particularly wet summer, gardeners haven’t been able to enjoy their outdoor spaces the way they usually do. Because of this, we’re anticipating colourful plants will be at the top of wishlists as people look to make the most of their gardens before cold weather sets in.

“Not only will Chrysanthemums provide a welcome boost of rich colour this autumn, because they’re hardy perennials, they’ll come back year after year if cared for properly.”

Nigel’s Chrysanthemum care tips:

  • Chrysanthemums like a fertile but well-drained soil, so before planting, improve your soil with a peat-free multi purpose compost, and mulch well after planting to ensure water retention.
  • Chrysanthemums will benefit from a sunny spot and regular waterings throughout the season, however, be careful not to overwater as they dislike waterlogged conditions.
  • Removing faded flowers regularly helps to keep a display looking its best. It also encourages new buds to form, extending to overall display.

RHS and community groups to stage two new exhibitions

Two new exhibitions exploring the healing power of gardens and nature are opening this September at RHS Garden Wisley, Surrey, and in Lewisham, south east London.

Both displays are the result of a collaboration between community groups, creative practitioners and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to create a modern-day herbal, showcasing through various art forms the plants that are important to individuals and communities today. Each project concludes in an exhibition in its local area and images from these exhibitions will feed into a digital display, ‘A Modern-Day Herbal’ which will ultimately be added to the RHS Lindley Library collection in 2026.

Traditional herbals were botanical encyclopaedias, containing information about plants and their different medicinal uses. Predating modern scientific medicine, these beautifully illustrated books often mixed careful observation of plants with myth and magic.

The two exhibitions are:

‘Nature’s Medicine: The Making of a Modern-Day Herbal’, The Old Laboratory, RHS Garden Wisley, 7th September -  26th January 2025

Created by a group from the Walton Charity alongside creative practitioner Anna Jones, this exhibition explores what a modern-day herbal could mean, encouraging visitors to consider not only the physical health benefits of plants, but also the healing potential of plants, gardens and green spaces for our mental wellbeing.

The RHS holds a rich collection of historic herbals in its libraries, some of which will feature in the display. Exhibition highlights include:

  • Well-known herbals by Nicholas Culpeper, John Gerard, and an expanded version of the famous A Curious Herbal by Elizabeth Blackwell
  • Original artwork created by the Walton Charity group participants, including poetry inspired by their local area and cyanotypes – one of the oldest forms of camera-less printing - made using plants and objects meaningful to them
  • A recreation of the cherry plum tree that grows on the Walton Charity allotment

‘Threads of Nature’, hARTslane, Lewisham, 12th-15th September

This display is a contemporary response to a traditional herbal, encompassing a collection of plants, gardens, and elements of the natural world that hold special meaning for the curators, who are all active participants in community gardens across Lewisham, including at University Hospital Lewisham Wellbeing Garden.

Creative practitioner Alice Burnhope ran workshops with the community curators, exploring the history of herbals through the RHS’ rare book collection and developing the curators' skills in a range of textile and art techniques. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to stroll among natural dye fabric panels inspired by the transformative power of gardening, as well as take part in free textile technique and horticulture workshops.

Fiona Davison, RHS Head of Libraries and Exhibitions, said: “We are delighted that through our community outreach we have been able to work with participants from Walton Charity and Lewisham, and creative practitioners Anna Jones and Alice Burnhope to curate these exhibitions. Exploring the connections between plants, nature, and wellbeing, these displays not only showcase the artistic talents of local communities but also invite visitors to consider the restorative experience of gardening. Both displays are a celebration of nature’s enduring ability to heal and inspire, and we hope that they will foster a deeper appreciation for the integral role of plants and gardens in our wellbeing.”

The new exhibitions are the latest offering from the RHS Gardens of Imagination programme, which aims to celebrate and share new stories about gardening, horticulture and the RHS’ unique collections by working with creative practitioners and people in local communities.

Herbals that were used for inspiration in the displays can be viewed via the RHS Digital Collections: https://collections.rhs.org.uk/

Access to the exhibition at RHS Wisley is included with general entry to the garden. For more information and to book tickets visit: https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/wisley/viewevent?EFID=3732&ESRC=CMS

Retirement prompts recruitment at garden centre group

Yorkshire Garden Centres has appointed two new managers to lead newly acquired sites in North Yorkshire...

A Bradford headquartered garden centre group has appointed two new managers to lead newly acquired sites in North Yorkshire.

Yorkshire Garden Centres acquired Dean's of York and Scarborough following the retirement of Richard, Helen and Sarah Dean earlier this year. Their retirement, plus that of Jim Cockerton from the Scarborough centre, created vacancies for managers at the two sites.

Experienced garden centre manager Mike Waugh has been appointed as the centre manager at Dean's York, and Adam Bailey has been promoted from within to manage the Dean's Scarborough site where he has worked for 21 years.

Mr. Waugh joins Yorkshire Garden Centres from California Lodge and Ellerker Lodge garden centres in East Yorkshire. Excited about the new role, he said: "I'm looking forward to joining a company with real ambition and drive to take the company forward, and in my role, I'm most looking forward to leading the team to reach these new heights."

Mr. Bailey is looking forward to using his knowledge of the centre and the team to grow the business, relishing "the challenges it will bring and new opportunities."

Both roles will involve leading the teams and making improvements where needed while maintaining high standards across the centres to ensure an exceptional customer experience.

Neil Barwise-Carr, Yorkshire Garden Centres' Head of People and Culture, said: "We're delighted to welcome Mike to the Yorkshire Garden Centres family and to congratulate Adam on his well-deserved promotion. We're looking forward to working with them both and benefitting from their vast experience."

Outside work, Mr. Waugh is a keen woodworker who enjoys spending time with his son doing anything sports-related and walking in the countryside with his partner.

Mr. Bailey spends his leisure time socialising with friends, playing 5 a side football and going to the gym.

The YGC group comprises Tong, Tingley, Otley and Bingley Garden Centres plus Dean's York and Dean's Scarborough. Otley and Bingley were known as Stephen H Smith's before they were acquired by YGC in 2022.

Steady sales reported as the weather picked up in July

The latest Horticultural Trades Association Market Update for August 2024 reveals steady garden centre sales in a year marked by very wet and unpredictable weather. The latest Horticultural Trades Association Market Update for August 2024 reveals steady garden centre sales in a year marked by very wet and unpredictable weather. This was primarily thanks to strong catering, food, and farm shop performance counteracting subdued plant and core gardening sales, which has largely been the story of 2024 so far.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA, commented: "The impact of the weather on garden centre sales this year has been quite significant, and July was no exception. Despite being drier and sunnier than July 2023 by the end of the month, some parts of the UK experienced more than the normal monthly rainfall in just the first couple of weeks.

“Sales of plants struggled, with hardy plants down 9% compared to July 2023. Garden furniture sales also took a hit, down 19% against the same period last year. This downturn in garden furniture sales contributed to Average Transaction Values about par with July 2023 despite inflation and down 8% compared to the warmer, drier July 2022.

“However, sales of associated core gardening products like tools and equipment, plant care, and garden features increased by 8%. BBQs and heating sales were boosted by the warmer end of July 2024, rising by 28% compared to the wet July 2023.

“I am pleased to report that garden centre sales overall finished the calendar year to the end of July up by 3% compared to 2023, largely buoyed by strong performances in catering, food and farm shop departments, which saw a 15% year-to-date increase, even as garden and gardening category sales suffered, down 2% year-to-date.

“Our report also shows that consumer confidence continued to improve marginally in July, reaching levels significantly above the prior year, and the inflation rate has stabilised at around 3%. Combined with the appeal of garden centre hospitality, this is promising for footfall and spending as we head towards autumn and Christmas preparations.

“Although positive sales trends in summer months are welcome, these are typically smaller months for garden centre sales, and the broader economic environment remains difficult. Retailers are contending with rising input and labour costs, which place significant pressure on profit margins. We will continue to work closely with our members and the government to advocate for the support our industry needs to navigate these challenges and to ensure its long-term sustainability.”

Floral Fantasia - Roger Crooks - GTN160824 025.jpg

Floral Fantasia, at RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex, is always open to visitors but GTN was invited, along with other members of the press, to see the latest trial of more than 80 sunflowers plus many other plants being assessed for garden performance.

Part of the organising team behind Floral Fantasia are Mike Smith from nearby WD Smith and Sons nursery, breeder Tim Kerley, Roger Seabrook (son of the late Peter Seabrook), Molli Christman who has been looking after the garden for several years, Wayne Early from Volmary, Paul Hansard formerly T&M, Stuart Lowen from Ball and Neil Gow.

Stuart Lowen is seen here with the very compact and bushy sunflower variety ‘Petisol’ ideal for pot / patio / window box use

Mike Smith is seen here with  sunflower ’Sunblast’ which is grown from cuttings, not seed, and was performing well in the garden with repeat shows of flowers on stems possibly long enough for cut flower use but seemed to be quite robust and bushy … one to watch out for?

Also at Floral Fantasia was Dr Raghavendra Prasad who spoke about the challenges of the transition towards the successful use of peat free composts. Raghavendra, has been collating information and data about the practical and commercial use of peat free composts. Several of the contributing nurseries are now almost completely peat free.

The day also took in a visit to nursery of WD Smith where Mike explained how the history of their continued investment into sustainable production processes over many years has enabled them to arrive at a stage where they are almost completely peat free and still producing beautiful quality plants … it can be done!

Mike also demonstrated the highly mechanised and precise production techniques the Smiths nursery team use to enable them to maximise space and resources to full commercial potential.

But I was also reminded that no matter mechanised we become we still need staff who are passionate about our quality plants to work alongside the mechanisation to bring the ‘human touch’. This was being brilliantly demonstrated by the packing team at Smiths who were checking and preparing each plant individually, adding labels and prices as required so that they can sell as soon as they arrive in the retail environment

Minister informed of challenges and concerns of grower’s peat-free journey

McClaren’s Nurseries in Glasgow hosted a visit and tour for the Agriculture Minister, Jim Fairlie MSP, at a crucial time for the professional horticulture sector...

McClaren’s Nurseries in Glasgow hosted a visit and tour for the Agriculture Minister, Jim Fairlie MSP, at a crucial time for the professional horticulture sector.

The use of peat in horticulture, which Minister Fairlie is responsible for, is a complex issue with significant consequences for the industry's present and future outlook. The industry has used peat for decades due to its unique nutritional and moisture retention qualities and as a growing medium for flora of all kinds. Some plant types and species will not perform well without the substance.

The Scottish Government is working on a proposal to ban the sale of peat in horticulture. The Horticulture Trade Association (HTA) and its members, such as McCLaren’s, have stressed the importance of engagement within the sector. Horticulture businesses crucially need time, support, and certainty to fully transition to a peat-free future.

Horticulture businesses have significantly reduced peat use in recent years, with levels now at record lows. However, concerns have been raised that an early, rather than measured, peat ban would damage Scottish businesses and their ability to produce flora. The Scottish Government has yet to publish a date for such a measure.

Adam McGowan, Director at McLaren’s Nurseries, commented: “As one of Scotland's largest growers, we've long been committed to sustainable solutions. We feel that there is still a long way to go for Ministers, in terms of setting out a clear pathway to a peat-free future. Transitioning to peat-free growing is a complex challenge that requires time, support, and viable alternatives— we hope that this was taken on board. We urge industry stakeholders including Scot Govt to advocate for a realistic and supportive approach for Scottish horticulture businesses.”

Stan Green, Chairman of the HTA Scotland Policy Development Group attended the visit, and stated: “We were pleased to be able to arrange this visit with Minister Fairlie, the HTA are keen for constructive and practical dialogue and progress with the Scottish Government. Such fact-finding visits and meetings are valuable to ensure the full experiences of our Members and facts of going to peat-free growing can be established. The industry continues to work to move away from peat use, but this is not a black and white issue, we grow thousands of different species of trees and plants that is enjoyed across Scotland – we are still understanding the various propagation data from peat-free trials.”

Minister for Agriculture and Connectivity, Jim Fairlie MSP commented: “I am grateful to Adam and Daryl from McLaren’s Nursery for sharing their concerns and I was impressed by the scale of operation and dedication to horticulture shown by this family-run firm. I am mindful of the challenges with phasing out peat and learning from those with first-hand experience is always valuable. We will continue to maintain an open dialogue with the sector representatives as we navigate towards a sales ban. The development of our approach will be informed by stakeholder consultation and industry-focused research. We are continuing to explore the potential of alternatives.”
