Grantham Garden Centre officially opened on Good Friday (3rd April), marking an exciting new chapter for the site following its transformation by British Garden Centres.

The opening was celebrated with a ribbon‑cutting ceremony led by celebrity gardener and BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Adam Frost, who officially opened the centre at 9am before meeting visitors and sharing gardening advice during the morning.

Located at Gonerby Moor, Grantham (NG32 2AB), the garden centre has undergone significant investment since joining the British Garden Centres family earlier this year. The refreshed site now offers an expanded range of plants, gardening essentials, homeware and outdoor living products, alongside a revitalised shopping experience designed to inspire gardeners of all levels.

To mark the opening, the first 100 customers through the doors received complimentary goody bags. Visitors across the opening weekend can enjoy special opening celebration offers, including Levington Tomorite at £3 per bottle and Erins Compost 3 for £12. The British Garden Centres team were on hand throughout the day to welcome customers and introduce them to the group’s free Family Card loyalty scheme.

A key highlight of the transformation is the newly refreshed restaurant, featuring a redesigned menu and a brand‑new 7 days a week carvery, making Grantham Garden Centre a welcoming destination for a full day out with family and friends.

Natalie Skins, Centre Manager at Grantham Garden Centre, said: “It has been fantastic to finally open our doors and welcome the Grantham community into the centre. This garden centre has always been a valued local destination, and seeing customers enjoy the new look, the store and the restaurant today has been incredibly rewarding for the whole team.”

Amy Stubbs, Managing Director of British Garden Centres, added: “A massive thank you to the amazing team who has been part of the Grantham Garden Centre transformation. We are delighted to see it open and thriving. We look forward to becoming a long‑term part of the local community and supporting gardeners throughout the seasons.”

Grantham Garden Centre is now open and welcoming customers daily.

Garden Centres in the National Press over Easter

As is the tradition of our UK national press, stories about garden centres made it into their pages over Easter.  Alan Roper was interviewed in the Times where he was quoted as saying "I've been through true recessions, and you can trade through it. Garden centres have always had that kind of gift, or slight protection from economic shocks."

In The Telegraph Political Correspondent Amy Gibbons told readers that: "Garden centres are under threat because of Rachel Reeves's "financial vandalism".

New ‘RHS Gifts for Gardeners’ collection from Burgon & Ball
GTN Xtra Promotion

This season Sheffield-based Burgon & Ball, creator of premium gardening tools and accessories since 1730, is launching a beautiful new design collection in its top-selling ‘RHS Gifts for Gardeners’ series...

This season Sheffield-based Burgon & Ball, creator of premium gardening tools and accessories since 1730, is launching a beautiful new design collection in its top-selling ‘RHS Gifts for Gardeners’ series.

The 12-piece new collection ‘Woodland Wonders’ takes inspiration from an increasing love for natural woodlands and for woodland gardens. Rewilding, forest bathing and the importance of natural habitats are recurring themes in winning gardens at RHS flower shows. Increasingly gardeners are looking to add a woodland element to their outdoor space, however small.

The new pattern has been created by Burgon & Ball and has an elegant and timeless feel. It incorporates specially selected eighteenth and early nineteenth century illustrations from the RHS Lindley Collections of historic botanical art. A dark green background evokes the peace of the deep forest, allowing the illustrations of berries and leaves, birds and insects to shine out. Beautiful gift packaging features the eye-catching new design, and in tune with consumer expectations, the packaging is plastic-free and easily recyclable.

Delivering value for money

‘Woodland Wonders’ adds exciting new gifting options to update and refresh the ‘RHS Gifts for Gardeners’ range. It also includes proven top-selling lines from previous RHS Gifts design collections. Across the range, prices have been set to deliver value for money, a factor always in demand with shoppers.

For example, the popular RHS Gifts herb pot set is included in this collection, now containing two pretty herb pots and designed to retail at a sub-£10 price point. The pots are packaged stacked to minimise footprint and maximise return on space for the retailer. New gauntlet gloves have a deep cuff for a little extra coverage when needed, and retail appealingly just a small margin above the regular RHS Gifts glove.

There’s also a new sowing and potting tin, perfect for gardeners who enjoy growing from seed. This reusable tin with the beautiful ‘Woodland Wonders’ design is jam-packed with propagation accessories, with lightweight stretch gloves, scoop, wooden dibblet and seed storage envelopes. Retailing at just £16.99, this new gift offers exceptional value.

Gifts for non-gardeners, too!

The beautiful ‘Woodland Wonders’ design has been extended to new gifts which will appeal to non-gardeners, as well as garden lovers. There’s a new A5 gardener’s notebook which includes a printed page of foraging information, and which comes complete with a quality pen. A magnetic notepad is perfect for the fridge door, offering the perfect place to capture those ‘jobs for the weekend’! A heavyweight cotton tote bag gives a way to take the peace of the woods with you when you’re out and about.

Reliable top-sellers

Favourite gift options from other design collections in the series make a welcome return with ‘Woodland Wonders’. In RHS-endorsed tools, the ever-popular trowel and hand fork set is included. The trowel is etched with a line of poetry by Lord Byron, and both tools have a lifetime guarantee. There’s a pruner and holster in a tin, the pruner with a ten-year guarantee. There’s also the return of gift-boxed gardener’s snips, again with a ten-year guarantee. All tools have limited-edition dark green handles.

In accessories, the ever-popular indoor watering can returns to the classic RHS Gifts silhouette, with an elegant long tapered spout for accurate pouring. The much-loved Kneelo® memory foam kneeler shows off the sophisticated new pattern to perfection. Completing the line-up, the gardening gloves have cushioned palm and anti-debris gathered wrist. They’re also washable at 30 degrees to keep them looking good.

The new collection looks simply gorgeous when displayed on the stylish ‘All You Need’ merchandising kit and will make an eye-catching attraction in any gifting display. With RRPs from just £9.99 up to £26.99, this year there’ll the perfect gardening gift for every budget in the new ‘Woodland Wonders’ RHS Gifts for Gardeners collection.

Heidi Towse and Tara Adams brought a burst of energy to Linford Wood in Milton Keynes on Saturday as they took over the Park Run to raise funds and awareness for their upcoming Kilimanjaro trek, supporting the new Greenfingers garden at Naomi House & Jacksplace.

The pair cheered on runners, handed out high-fives and shared their passion for creating beautiful, accessible outdoor spaces for children and families at the hospice. Their aim was to inspire the local community while raising funds for this life-changing project.

“Climbing Kilimanjaro is a huge challenge but knowing we’re helping bring nature and joy to children at the hospice makes every step worth it.  It was wonderful to see the Park Run community come together to support Greenfingers, we couldn’t have asked for a better morning!”

The takeover was a lively celebration of community, fitness and giving back, with participants encouraged to donate to Heidi and Tara’s trek. Every pound raised brings the new garden at Naomi House & Jacksplace closer to reality, a place where children and families can enjoy the healing power of nature for years to come.

Woodlodge strengthens UK distribution and service support for Artevasi customers

Woodlodge Products Ltd has confirmed that it has become the UK distribution partner for Artevasi products from 1 April 2026, ensuring continuity of supply and service for customers across the UK...

Woodlodge Products Ltd has confirmed that it has become the UK distribution partner for Artevasi products from 1 April 2026, ensuring continuity of supply and service for customers across the UK.

The move reinforces Woodlodge’s commitment to delivering best-in-class service levels for UK garden centres, supported by its established national distribution network and award-winning merchandising team.

To ensure a smooth transition for retailers, Woodlodge has taken proactive steps to support customers throughout the changeover period, including expanding its merchandising capability by welcoming a number of experienced merchandisers into the Woodlodge team in key strategic regions across the UK. They all start this week in readiness for the post-Easter period where garden centres are at their busiest.

This investment will help maintain — and in many areas further enhance — the high standards of store support and merchandising that customers rely on during the critical spring season.

Michael Wooldridge, Director at Woodlodge Products Ltd, said: “Our priority is always the customer. We recognise that transitions like this can create uncertainty, so we have moved quickly to ensure continuity of supply, continuity of merchandising support and the exceptional service levels that retailers expect.

"By strengthening our merchandising team and integrating experienced personnel in key regions, we are confident we can not only maintain service levels but continue to raise the bar for in-store support and availability.”

Woodlodge’s strategy remains firmly centred on the garden centre channel, where the business has built long-standing partnerships with leading independent and group operators across the UK. By focusing exclusively on the needs of garden retailers — from tailored product ranges and bespoke planograms to hands-on merchandising and stock optimisation — the company continues to drive increased sales per square metre and improved retail performance for its customers.

The company will work closely with Artevasi to ensure a seamless transition of supply from April, enabling retailers to continue offering the popular range of sustainable and design-led plant pots to UK consumers without disruption.

Woodlodge also told GTN Xtra they have taken on 11 new merchandisers to support their retail activities across the country.

Please contact your area sales rep or contact the office pots@woodlodge.co.uk or visit our showroom to see the complete range.

Rob Giles takes on marathon for Greenfingers

Rob Giles, long‑time supporter of Greenfingers Charity, is stepping up to his biggest challenge yet - running his first ever marathon at the Manchester Marathon in support of the charity’s life‑changing work.

Greenfingers Charity creates therapeutic, inspiring gardens for children’s hospices across the UK. These outdoor spaces offer families a place to breathe, reflect, play, and connect during the most difficult moments of their lives. Each garden is designed to bring comfort, joy, and a sense of normality to children with life‑limiting conditions.

Rob’s connection to Greenfingers goes back a while – after nearly two decades working in the gardening industry, the owner of Cultiv8 Marketing has consistently supported the charity. Being involved in fundraising for Greenfingers has been a running theme during this journey but this time, he’s taking things to a whole new level…

“I’ve worked in horticulture for most of my life, and I’ve always admired the incredible impact Greenfingers has on families who need it most,” said Rob. “Running my first marathon feels like the ultimate way to give something back and help fund more of these magical gardens.”

Rob’s fundraising target is £1,000, but he hasn’t hit that milestone yet. With race day fast approaching on 19th April 2026, he’s calling on friends, colleagues, businesses, and the wider community to get behind him.

Every donation no matter the size helps Greenfingers continue creating the gardens that mean so much to so many families.

You can help Rob smash his £1,000 target by donating here via Just Giving - https://www.justgiving.com/page/rg-greenfingers-marathon

Victoria Osborne, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Norfolk-based LV Bespoke, has been appointed to the council of GIMA...

Victoria Osborne, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Norfolk-based LV Bespoke, has been appointed to the council of GIMA.

Victoria has played an instrumental role in building LV Bespoke from the ground up, establishing the Norfolk manufacturer as a respected supplier to leading organisations including the National Trust, Hillier, Blue Diamond, RHS and British Garden Centres. The business, which specialises in bespoke metalwork and point-of-sale solutions for the horticultural and lifestyle sectors, has grown steadily and been recognised across a number of industry and business awards.

Earlier this year, LV Bespoke was named Small Business of the Year at the 2026 Broadland and South Norfolk Business Awards. The business has also been recognised at the GIMA Awards 2025, where its Glass & Steel Garden Feature Stakes Collection was named Sustainability Champion in the Garden Lighting, Water Features & Ornamentation category, as well as being shortlisted as a finalist in that same category.

GIMA is a membership organisation representing around 170 companies, together accounting for an estimated £4 billion in annual trade within the UK gardening industry. Its council is made up of volunteer representatives from member businesses who work to shape the direction of the association and ensure it continues to deliver value for members across the sector.

Having engaged with GIMA through events, meetings and networking, Victoria brings an energetic and commercially grounded perspective to the council, rooted in the realities of running a growing manufacturing business. She has expressed a particular commitment to supporting initiatives around British manufacturing, innovation and the development of emerging brands, as well as advocating for stronger representation of smaller and independent suppliers within the sector.

As a woman in manufacturing and horticulture, Victoria is also a champion for diversity within the industry, actively encouraging more women to consider manufacturing, horticulture and engineering-led businesses as rewarding career paths.

LV Bespoke looks forward to playing an active role within GIMA and to contributing to the future of the industry.

Following the integration of Gardenex into the GIMA portfolio, the association has confirmed its first international Buyer Connect event, in partnership with leading European marketplace BOL.

Taking place on Tuesday 19th May 2026, the virtual event will connect selected suppliers with BOL’s buying team through a series of structured one-to-one meetings, designed to explore product suitability, identify innovation and unlock new routes to market across mainland Europe.

BOL represents a significant opportunity for businesses targeting growth in Europe. As one of the leading online marketplaces in the Netherlands and Belgium, it provides access to millions of active customers, alongside a fully integrated platform that supports sellers with marketing tools, fulfilment options and logistics infrastructure.

Alongside the one-to-one meetings, participating suppliers will gain valuable insight into what is required to succeed on the platform, including operational expectations, customer experience standards and key considerations when trading within EU markets.

The event is open to both GIMA members and non-members, with each successful applicant receiving a dedicated 25-minute meeting with the BOL team (maximum of two attendees per company).

Dobbies raises £235,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK

Dobbies Garden Centres has announced the success of the first year of its national charity partnership with Alzheimer’s Research UK, having raised £235,000 – more than triple the original fundraising target...

Dobbies Garden Centres has announced the success of the first year of its national charity partnership with Alzheimer’s Research UK, having raised £235,000 – more than triple the original fundraising target.

Launched in March 2025, the charity was chosen for its strong resonance with Dobbies’ communities, customers and colleagues. The partnership also supports Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Think Brain Health campaign, highlighting the benefits of gardening and garden living for brain health.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity, dedicated to ending the heartbreak of dementia by speeding up progress towards a cure.

David Robinson, Chief Executive Officer of Dobbies, said: “I’m incredibly proud of what our colleagues and customers have achieved in our first year partnering with Alzheimer’s Research UK. Surpassing our original fundraising target shows just how strongly this cause resonates with our communities.

“Together, that support could fund over 5,500 hours of vital dementia research, and we’re looking forward to building on this even further in our second year of partnership.”

Dr Sheona Scales, Director of Research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, added: “Almost one million people are living with dementia in the UK, and this number is predicted to reach 1.4 million by 2040. Alzheimer’s Research UK exists to change that. It is more urgent than ever that we revolutionise the way dementia is treated, diagnosed and prevented.

“We are incredibly proud to work with Dobbies. This partnership is helping us share the message of brain health while raising vital funds to help end the heartbreak of dementia.”

Dobbies customers and colleagues raised the £235,000 through a range of initiatives, including an exclusive bulb pack developed in partnership with Taylors Bulbs, a dedicated Christmas Shopping Night, online event donations, and colleague fundraising challenges including marathons.

During World Alzheimer’s Month in September, Dobbies also launched a nationwide programme in partnership with micro-donation charity, Pennies. This enables customers to choose to give a 25p donation when paying by card at the garden centre tills – which has so far raised over £69,000 in donations.

This year will see a series of new fundraising initiatives including sponsorship of Edinburgh’s Walk for a Cure, donations from special plant purchases, as well as in-store events and colleague challenges.

The Colegrave Seabrook Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2026 scholarship awards, recognising outstanding students studying horticulture, and related subjects, across the United Kingdom.

Competition for this year’s scholarships was particularly strong, with a high volume of exceptional applications, submitted from colleges and universities nationwide.

Colegrave Seabrook Foundation Chair, Stuart Lowen, said: “Selecting this year’s scholars has once again been a challenging task due to the consistently high standard of applications. While we would like to support even more students, we are delighted that, with the continued support of our sponsors, we have been able to award scholarships to 13 individuals this year.

"Importantly, in many instances, these scholarships offer more than financial assistance. They provide invaluable opportunities for students to gain industry experience, visit sponsor businesses, develop practical skills and gain valuable work experience. These experiences play a crucial role in broadening students’ understanding of the diverse career opportunities within horticulture.”

The successful applicants are studying at various colleges across the United Kingdom and studying a variety of courses, from apprenticeships to degree level. The 2026 Colegrave Seabrook Scholarship Winners are:

Flymo launches its first cordless hover collect lawnmower

Flymo has launched the world's first cordless hover collect lawnmower – more than 60 years after taking flight...

Flymo has launched the world's first cordless hover collect lawnmower – more than 60 years after taking flight.

The iconic hover mower brand has cut the cord with the 36V EasiHover 300 to provide the fastest way to a tidy lawn and signal the start of a new era.

In 1965, Flymo revolutionised lawncare forever by combining a hovercraft with a lawnmower to create a flying mower that would glide on a cushion of air.

Now, six decades on, the 36V EasiHover is designed for fast mowing on sloped, curved and compact lawns to make light work of tricky inclines, tight corners and around flower beds.

Cordless power removes the hassle of cables, while the compacting collection system means fewer emptying stops and the quick-fold handles and vertical storage enables gardeners to pack away neatly.

Howard Scott, Flymo’s UK Country Manager, said: “The first hover took flight six decades ago, and now we’ve cut the cord to mark another world-first.

“Just like the revolutionary Flymo original, it floats on a cushion of air to move freely around your lawn - making light work of tricky areas and tight corners.

“Smooth to handle, simple to store, and built for speed, the 36V EasiHover 300 is the return of a gardening legend - and the fast, frictionless way to keep even the most challenging lawn layouts looking sharp.”

The Flymo 36V EasiHover 300 is available now at Argos, Amazon, and Very.

Following the success of the Royal Horticultural Society collaboration with Sophie Allport at the 2025 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the homeware, kitchenware and accessories brand is returning to this year’s show with a new RHS-licensed collection of memorabilia.

The limited-edition Sophie Allport RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026 collection celebrates the peaceful charm of the show, capturing a tranquil corner of the grounds in Sophie’s signature hand-painted style.

The collection includes a mug (in standard and large sizes), small tray, cotton tea towel, cotton tote bag and a signed print, on which Sophie’s hand-painted illustrations transport the viewer to a warm summer’s day, where a gentle water feature sits at the heart of the scene while a pond, alive with little frogs, glimmers beneath soft sunlight. A greenhouse brimming with homegrown goodness nestles amongst tall hollyhocks, lupins, echinacea and layers of lush, leafy borders.

Mature trees frame the view with buzzing bees, fluttering butterflies, curious hares, hedgehogs and flashes of vibrant parakeets among the branches. The iconic Pavilion rises softly in the background, anchoring the artwork in the unmistakable world of RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

This is a joyful, peaceful design that feels both nostalgic and full of life, while celebrating the calm, creativity and quiet moments found in gardens large and small. The design and the products themselves combine to make this a wonderful collection of thoughtful keepsakes that bring a little of the magic of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show into everyday homes.

The Sophie Allport RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026 collection will again include the RHS logo on packaging and swing tags as well as the words ‘RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026’ on all products.

The Sophie Allport RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026 collection will be available to purchase at the Sophie Allport stand during the show and online at www.sophieallport.com from April the 14th 2026.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the pinnacle of garden design, held for more than a century in the grounds of the Royal Hospital, takes place this year from 19-23 May 2026. A world-famous event, the 2025 show attracted more than 151,000 visitors from across the globe. Millions more follow the show on television and online.

Since 2007, Sophie Allport has been creating timeless pieces for homes. Inspired by nature and the countryside and Sophie’s own life as a busy mum, the designs, featuring animals, birds, nature, florals and more, are all lovingly created by Sophie from her countryside home in Lincolnshire.

Founder and Creative Director Sophie Allport says: “RHS Chelsea Flower Show is always such an inspiring week, filled with energy, colour and extraordinary creativity. This year’s design is my way of capturing that feeling of calm and bringing it into pieces we can enjoy at home each day. It has once again been a delight to work with the UK’s gardening charity to celebrate its most famous Flower Show.”

Cathy Snow, Licensing Manager, RHS adds: “Drawing on the quiet joy that gardening so often brings, Sophie Allport has once again brought her elegant, stylish and evocative designs to a unique and artistically accomplished collection that brings the delights of gardening into every home. This, the second Sophie Allport-RHS Chelsea Flower Show collection, is once again an inspired celebration of one of the highlights of the gardening calendar.”

British Garden Centres’ partnership with Greenfingers Charity was entered in the Mid‑Term Partnership category, highlighting several years of sustained commitment, fundraising and hands‑on support.

Since forming the partnership, British Garden Centres has helped raise significant funds, donated plants and materials, and mobilised teams across its nationwide network to support the design and build of gardens that provide comfort, play and respite for children with life‑limiting conditions and their families. How can independent retailers survive 2026?

Retail marketplace Autumn Fair has launched the latest episode of its Retail Makeover Mission, showcasing the transformation of independent retailer OSO Boutique in Salisbury, led by retail expert Deryane Tadd, founder of award-winning boutique The Dressing Room in St Albans.

Following hundreds of inspiring applications from independent retailers across the UK, two businesses were selected to receive a complete retail transformation from Autumn Fair’s expert Retail Task Team. The project brings together leading retail specialists to help independent stores strengthen their businesses across visual merchandising, branding, customer experience and buying strategy.

The new episode follows Deryane as she invites Katie Gibbs, owner of OSO Boutique, into The Dressing Room, for an immersive, behind-the-scenes mentoring experience. Drawing on over 20 years in retail, Deryane shares practical, real-world advice in her own store environment, offering Katie a rare insight into what makes a successful independent boutique. From improving store layout and merchandising to refining brand storytelling and customer engagement, the experience offers practical insights for retailers navigating today’s challenging trading environment.

Katie Gibbs, owner of OSO Boutique said, “Working with Deryane taught me that even as a small business, you have to think and behave like a big brand. That applies to everything from how your store looks and feels, to how products are displayed and the journey customers take through the shop. Big brands invest a lot of time and money into getting that right, but there’s no reason independent retailers can’t keep those same principles front of mind. From a commercial perspective, really understanding your sales data is the cornerstone. Thinking with that ‘big brand’ mindset helps you approach the business much more strategically, and when you visit the store now, you can really see those learnings in action.”

Alongside the episode, Autumn Fair has released a free downloadable retail toolkit featuring practical guidance and top tips from Deryane Tadd on building a thriving fashion retail business.

Drawing on decades of experience running one of the UK’s most successful independent fashion boutiques, the toolkit highlights key strategies including designing intentional store layouts, building strong teams, creating meaningful customer experiences and integrating digital channels with physical retail.

“Retail is much more than simply selling products,” said Deryane Tadd, founder of The Dressing Room and Retail Makeover Mission expert task team member. “It’s about creating a complete business that puts the customer at the heart of everything you do, while building a team and environment that supports growth and creativity.

“Everything we share in the toolkit comes from real-life experience, what works in practice, what builds consistency and what helps independent retailers grow sustainably.”

One key principle highlighted in the toolkit is the importance of thoughtful store design and customer flow, ensuring customers can naturally explore a store while discovering new products and experiences. It also encourages retailers to tell the story behind every product, helping shoppers connect more deeply with brands and purchases.

The Retail Makeover Mission was inspired by the challenges facing independent retail and the desire to support businesses that bring creativity and personality to the UK high street. Autumn Fair’s expert Retail Makeover Mission Task Team worked directly with the winning retailers to transform key areas of their businesses including:

  • Visual merchandising and store design
  • Customer experience and store flow
  • Branding and digital presence
  • Marketing and customer loyalty
  • Buying strategies and product curation
  • Operational efficiency

The video series captures the transformation in real time, offering behind-the-scenes insight and practical advice for retailers looking to evolve their own businesses.

Matthew Mein, Event Director of Autumn Fair said, “This project is about celebrating the passion and resilience of independent retailers. These businesses are the heart of our high streets and communities, and Retail Makeover Mission shows what’s possible when expertise, creativity and determination come together.”

The Garden Centre Association has unveiled a new cyber security course on its award‑winning Garden Retail Online Workshops (GROW) e‑learning platform.

This marks the 99th course to be added to GROW, which is accessible to both GCA members and those in the Horticultural Trades Association.

GROW’s Instructional Designer, Antony Snow explains: “According to the UK Government’s ‘Cyber Security Breaches’ report, 43% of UK businesses were the subject of a cyber attack in 2025. This includes several high-profile organisations, and unfortunately, some of our own members too.

“This demonstrates the fact that we are all vulnerable and highlights how important it is to safeguard our information.

“This course has been written to provide our members with an overview of cyber security and to make them aware of the methods cyber criminals may use to gain unauthorised access to their personal and an organisation’s data.

“It also covers the risks and threats that individuals and organisations may face, as well as practical tips and advice to help them to maintain and improve their online security.”

GROW, which currently has more than 12,000 GROW users nationwide, was originally devised during a strategy meeting of the GCA’s executive committee to bring education and training tailored to individuals employed in the garden centre industry.

It’s a self-funding and non-profit facility with any surpluses being reinvested into its ongoing development and improvement.

GCA Chief Executive, Peter Burks says: “We are very pleased to be launching this new course at a time when this is a very hot topic and is in the news every day. It highlights how every one of us is an important factor in keeping both our own data and that of our companies safe and secure. I am delighted that we are adding this topic into our catalogue.

“If you’d like to explore GROW, this course, or any of our 98 other courses that are available, please visit www.gca.org.uk/gca-grow-information or email Antony at grow@gca.org.uk.”

GROW provides an extensive set of important courses on subject matter designed to help staff successfully assist customers and colleagues as needed.

These include a wide range of topics that cover horticulture, customer service, food safety, regulated sales and health and safety.

All the courses have been written by experts in their field and are designed to apply to a garden centre environment, with the content for the horticultural courses drawing on the vast experience of members within the GCA.

Gouldings Garden Centre has announced the purchase of Rosebank Nurseries Ltd in the village of Rosebank, Clyde Valley.

The Goulding family started farming in the Clyde Valley back in 1897, this diversified into vegetable growing in the 70s, then onto wholesale bedding plant production in the 80s (this was all grown in polytunnels). 1990 saw the first glass house being erected and the started retail in 1993.

At this present time the family operate Gouldings Garden Centre and Nursery. The nursery supplies all home-grown perennials and bedding plants. The restaurant in Gouldings seats 140 covers. They are very fortunate to have repeat clientele, which keeps it queued out most days.

In 2017 the family purchased Flowers of Scotland Garden Centre in Rosebank. After refurbishment they now run this as Valley view. In 2017 it opened with a 90 seater restaurant and 60 occupancy soft play for under 6 year old. 2018 the adventure park opened, which is weather dependant and have a great annual membership following and in summer day can hold up to 1200 visitors. Rosebank Nurseries has now joined the Goulding family. This has been a plant and garden centre for the past 10 years. Everton Nurseries near Lymington and on the edge of the New Forest is a much-loved garden centre and nursery. In the Collyer family for over 100 years, Everton Nurseries is now under new family ownership that will allow the business to continue its passion of serving local gardeners.

Everton becomes the fifth garden centre in the Your Local Garden Centre group owned by local garden centre owner, Paul Richards. Richards was attracted to the business, valuing its heritage and the quality of the plants it grows as well as the leisure retail and catering on site.

The change of ownership facilitates the retirement of the third generation of the Collyer family. Richards said “It has been a pleasure dealing with the Collyer family and our values closely align.”

Helpful and knowledgeable staff are a great strength of the business and all jobs are safeguarded. “We have no plans for redundancies. Quite the opposite, we will want more staff as we act on our plans to develop the business and make sure it has many more successful years as a family owned and horticultural business.” Says Richards. Two members of the fourth generation of the Collyer family will stay on in management positions.

The retiring Directors commented “It was a difficult decision but it was important to us that all staff will be retained. We are confidant that the business is in safe hands and will continue to thrive and prosper. We wanted the business to carry on in a similar format and remain one business incorporating the wholesale nursery side and the garden centre. We are very grateful to all our loyal and longstanding staff and customers and we are confident that the decision has helped to secure the future of the business.”

The heart of the business is the nursery that grows plants sold in the garden centre and to wholesale customers. Paul Richards started his career as a nurseryman and owned the Golden Acres Nursery at West Parley. Paul’s daughter Charlotte is following in her father’s footsteps and now runs Plants For Trade as a cash and carry nursery at West Parley. The nursery at Everton will be run by Charlotte as a sister business to Plant For Trade.

Camillias, the on-site coffee shop restaurant will continue with its own bakery for cakes and treats, and it will continue to be the popular meeting place it has become. Everton Nurseries is more than a garden centre, it is a long-established local facility, and a visit can really boost your wellbeing.

Everton Nurseries Ltd was established in 1922 by Mr C G Collyer and grew over the years to some 25 acres, producing a wide range of Trees, Shrubs, Fruit Trees, Conifers, Roses and Herbaceous Perennials for retail and trade sales. The garden centre was opened in 1985. Following a substantial re-fit and expansion in 2006, Camellias Coffee Shop and Restaurant was then opened.

Retiring Directors are Simon and Toby Collyer and Maria Collyer. New Directors are Paul and Charlotte Richards and Tim Mason.

Fourth generation family of the founder continuing in managerial positions at the business, Lucy and Alessio Collyer.

Your Local Garden Centre Group operates four garden centres: Mappleborough Green near Redditch, Stansted Park near Chichester, Alver Valley in Gosport, Findon Vale in Findon.

The business has a head office at West Parley, near Bournemouth airport where Plants For Trade operates a cash and carry trade nursery.

Air Drain solution from Eco Tiffin

Constantly evolving, Eco Tiffin, a building and surveying business, has its sights on the garden centre market to bring its Air Drain to a new audience...

Constantly evolving, Eco Tiffin, a building and surveying business, has its sights on the garden centre market to bring its Air Drain to a new audience.

With origins dating back to 1695, Eco Tiffin Ltd has developed on generations of practical building knowledge, craftsmanship and invention. Across more than five centuries, the Tiffin name has evolved alongside the built environment itself – adapting skills, services and thinking as buildings, materials and environmental pressures have changed, especially with the onset of climate change.

Under the leadership of Director Robert Tiffin, the business has made a decisive shift toward sustainable, evidence-led building performance, conservation and retrofit.

With increasing challenges from heavy rain and flash floods, Robert’s invention of the Air Drain, and understanding of how it will benefit the gardening and landscape sector, is an example of the company’s commitment to facing climate change head on and desire to seize the opportunity to promote its product to a wider audience.

“We launched the Air Drain last year. Surveyors, architects and engineers love it and

can’t understand why it has not been invented before;’ says Robert.

Seeing the invisible

Robert invented the Air Drain in direct response to the recurring ground-level moisture problems on housing stock identified through thermographic surveys. Across hundreds of thermographic surveys, ground-level moisture and cold bridging, often linked to raised external ground levels and restricted evaporation at the base of walls, was a recurring cause and commonly misdiagnosed as rising damp.

Conventional damp solutions frequently failed because they treated internal symptoms, not the external source of wetting.

Crucially as the effects of climate change bring about heavier and more frequent rains and flash flooding, higher ground moisture levels and splash back from paving and garden borders onto property walls, will only increase. This along with no drying potential and greater temperature differences are placing growing pressure on older and traditionally built homes.

Problems that were once intermittent are now persistent, leading to damp, mould and reduced thermal performance.

“Climate change is exposing weaknesses in buildings that were never designed for today’s conditions. Understanding this and the identification of the causes of damp related defects is ‘key’ to your home surviving another 100 years, and remaining warm and comfy,” says Robert.

Air Drain is a patented, passive moisture management system designed to encourage natural evaporation at the base of external walls, helping masonry remain dry, warmer and more resilient. The system complies with BS 6576 – the British Standard for the control of rising damp and works by removing the source of wetting from the structure and increasing ventilation. This approach addresses the cause of moisture ingress rather than masking its effects internally.

“The key;’ says Robert, “is that Air Drain stops bridging between the property, its damp proof course and its garden. “It removes the source of wetting- not just the symptoms.”

Eco Tiffin’s data records an average 20% reduction in damp readings in the first six weeks of installation, and a steady drop thereafter. Crucially, Air Drain differs from a traditional French drain as it does not allow naturally evaporation via diffusion from the masonry. Instead, it works with the existing structure, preserving stability while allowing moisture evaporation and thermal performance.

Builders, architects and surveyors already agree on the benefits of the Air Drain and recommended as general good practice. Eco Tiffin’s route to these areas of expertise is already established but its benefits to gardeners, either those taking on their own projects or employing professional landscapers, has great potential.

Additionally, Air Drain is easy to install and gives designers greater freedom to create gardens with borders and patios to the same level as that of the house while still protecting the fabric of the building.

Robert has spoken to several garden centres, all of which can see the benefit to the retail sector and customers. A working model could be having a demonstration area within a garden centre and passing orders directly through to Eco Tiffin for delivery. He also sees potential in stocking Air Drain alongside paving and hard landscaping for customers considering paving up to the walls of their homes.

“In today’s world we see the link and the necessity of the Air Drain. Not just to benefit the building but to also benefit the gardens around us;’ says Robert.

The Air Drain has 3 standard colours, but can be finished in any RAL colour.

Introducing children to gardening is a meaningful way to encourage curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong connection to the natural world.

FELCO’s Kids range is thoughtfully designed to support that journey with real, functional tools adapted for young hands.

The FELCO 14 KIDS pruning shears provide an early introduction to pruning traditions.

As well as ergonomic comfort, its safety features include rounded blades, and a 2-position thumb catch allowing for a smaller, halfway opening option, making it easier for children’s hands – suitable for ages eight and up.

For younger gardeners, the FELCO 470 KIDS trowel and fork set offers a sturdy steel-and‑ash‑wood pairing ideal for planting seeds and bulbs while encouraging shared moments outdoors.

The range expands further with the FELCO 720 KIDS gloves, made from sheepskin leather with a breathable Spandex back.

Designed for ages four to ten, they offer dexterity, comfort, and Category‑1 protection against minor scratches, perfect for hands‑on exploration.

The FELCO 490 KIDS apron complements this, crafted from durable, water‑resistant cotton canvas with reinforced leather pockets, giving children a protective and practical layer for all kinds of outdoor tasks.

Central to the collection is the Little Green Fingers activity book, to compliment the FELCO’s kids’ range of garden tools.

It presents twelve monthly chapters filled with creative and practical gardening projects, such as seed‑bomb making, insect‑hotel building, and seasonal planting, developed with gardening and education specialists.

Together, these tools and activities make gardening engaging, safe, and rewarding.

By giving children the right equipment and guidance, FELCO helps nurture patience, environmental awareness, and the satisfaction of caring for something that grows.
