Trudy Harrison MP, Minister for Natural Environment and Land Use, told a gathering of MP's, Peers and industry representatives at yesterdays Parliamentary Reception, hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Gardening & Horticulture Group; "we need the horticultural sector, the environmental, horticultural sector to be buoyant, to be thriving, to be prosperous..."

Environmental Horticulture Group (EHG) launched at parliamentary reception in Westminster yesterday, Wednesday 7th June 2023.

  • EHG aims to champion UK gardens, landscaping, arboriculture and environmental horticulture, and push the government for greater support for the sector.
  • Industry event in the House of Lords attended by more than 160 high-profile MPs, Peers, officials, ministers and sector representatives, as well as TV’s Jim Carter and Alan Titchmarsh

The Parliamentary Reception was hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Gardening & Horticulture Group, a cross-party group of MPs and Peers who support the environmental horticulture industry. The Parliamentary Reception was sponsored by:

  • British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI)
  • The Horticultural Trade Association (HTA)
  • Westland

Baroness Fookes, Chairman, All-Party Parliamentary Gardening and Horticulture Group, introduced the speakers:

  • Boyd Douglas-Davies, Chair, Environmental Horticulture Group Listen here
  •
  • Trudy Harrison MP, Minister for Natural Environment and Land Use, DEFRA Listen here
  •
  • Jim Carter, gardener and actor, best known for playing Mr Carson in Downton Abbey Listen here
  •
  • Alan Titchmarsh, gardener and broadcaster Listen here
  •

The new EHG includes garden centres and their supply-chain, public and private gardens, commercial growers and nurseries, arboriculture, and domestic and commercial landscaping. The environmental horticulture industry includes British based multinationals, through to independent, multi-generation family run businesses. The EHG’s core members are:

  • Arboriculture Association (AA)
  • British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI)
  • The Horticultural Trade Association (HTA)
  • Royal Horticulural Society (RHS)

The EHG was formerly known as the Ornamental Horticulture Roundtable Group (OHRG) and continues the OHRG’s work of championing environmental horticulture – the original green economy industry – and calling on the government to do more to support the sector to help it reach its full potential.

Research by Oxford Economics has found that the environmental horticulture industry could grow to support GDP contributions worth £41.8 billion and 763,000 jobs by 2030, if the government supports the sector to grow.

As part of its ongoing engagement with government, the EHG will be campaigning on a number of key issues important to the wider environmental horticulture sector including:

  • challenges with cross-border trade
  • the need to set seasonal workers schemes on a firm footing
  • the need to incorporate green spaces into future urban planning
  • how to improve environmental sustainability

As a sector built around the supply of plants and trees, environmental horticulture will play a crucial role in many of the environmental-based solutions tackling climate change. This is particularly relevant as the UK’s gardens and green spaces can directly mitigate the worst effects of climate change, provide relief from heat and extreme weather, and foster biodiversity.

Boyd Douglas-Davies, Chair, Environmental Horticulture Group, said: “Caring for and improving the environment – be that through private gardens, urban green spaces or public parks - goes to the heart of what the Environmental Horticulture Group stands for.

“I was honored to chair the OHRG and now I am delighted to Chair the EHG as we continue to champion the enormous success and exciting potential of the environmental horticulture sector. I look forward to working closely with government stakeholders to achieve our shared aims in a breadth of policy areas including economic, environmental, science, research, net zero, business, health, planning, taxation, skills and education.

“The time is now if we are to make the most of the next decade of growth opportunities and work with government to create a truly greener, happier, more environmentally sustainable society and economy.”

Baroness Fookes, Chair, All-Party Parliamentary Gardening and Horticulture Group said: “I am delighted that this Reception has brought together not only a large number of representatives from the many aspects of horticulture but also a wonderful turn out of MPs and Peers from all parties.

“I hope that the new body launched today will spearhead a new era in horticulture where at long last it will take its rightful place as a key player in mitigating climate change and promoting biodiversity.  I see it as my role to support this endeavour and to do my best to get the Government to rise to the challenge too!”

Warning of plant shortages for UK gardeners by 2027 if a ban on peat is brought forward

New data from the Horticultural Trades Association shows there is likely to be a severe impact on plant availability after recent government indications that a ban on professional peat use in the horticultural industry will be brought forward by four growing seasons...

  • Defra date shift on peat ban risks devastating impacts on the horticultural industry and the Government’s 25-year Environment Plan, new HTA survey shows
  • Commercial growers project a shortage of 100 million plants and trees in the year immediately following the ban
  • Professional peat use is already below 50% of previous levels and on track for the original 2030 deadline
  • Sector reiterates calls to support a sustainable transition from peat use not to undermine the UK horticulture and garden industry.

New data from the Horticultural Trades Association shows there is likely to be a severe impact on plant availability after recent government indications that a ban on professional peat use in the horticultural industry will be brought forward by four growing seasons.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has stated its intention to ban peat in commercial plant, tree, fruit, and vegetable production by the end of 2026 rather than 2030, as previously indicated. This would more than halve the number of growing seasons commercial growers have to complete extensive trialling to changes in their crop production techniques, raising serious concerns about potential environmental and economic impacts.

In a survey of its members, commercial growers projected a shortage of 100 million plants and trees for sale in the UK in the year immediately following the ban. This shortage could result in a significant loss of greenery and biodiversity in gardens, parks, and streets, depriving the UK of its vibrant natural landscapes.

James Barnes, Chairman of the HTA, said:

“We urge the government to reconsider the timeline and ensure a manageable transition away from peat use, allowing adequate time for growers to successfully and sustainably trial and adapt their methods and materials. By doing so, we can protect jobs, preserve biodiversity, and continue to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits that arise from our connection with nature.

“The long-term impacts on Britain’s horticultural industry and the environmental benefits it delivers will be seismic and out of all proportion with the environmental gains of bringing in a peat ban a few years early – at a time when the industry is already demonstrating year on year reduction in its use.

“Defra's recent announcement without proper consultation or impact assessment has raised concern across horticulture – from retailers to growers. The industry shares the ambition to deliver a sustainable transition from peat use, with the same environmental outcomes as Defra, but requires the government to find a way forward that aligns environmental ambitions with the economic viability of the environmental horticultural sector. The HTA has long championed sustainable practices and supports the industry's transition from peat use, and much work has been happening to reduce it. UK commercial plant growers are well on their way to voluntarily removing peat by 2030, as encouraged by the government over the past decade. The use of peat in bagged compost is at a record low on a sharp trajectory towards zero, and professional use is already below 50% volume of previous levels. This puts the UK ahead of the rest of Europe on the peat-free journey.

“The HTA's survey findings depict a grim outlook for the horticultural industry and the millions of gardeners who rely on it. Some plants are problematic to grow in peat free compost, and further trials are needed. One in three suppliers to parks and public green spaces fear they will be unable to fulfil their obligations, potentially leading to defaults or contract withdrawals. Garden centres, a vital source of plants and trees for consumers, predict they will have gaps and reduced product lines by 2027.

“The HTA survey also reveals that two-thirds of the UK's commercial growers anticipate increased water and nutrient usage as they are forced to use peat-free alternatives without testing the best ways of using water and nutrients in a new growing medium. These new irrigation regimes will put pressure on efforts to increase water resilience and reduce use, a priority for the UK with increased extended drought periods, such as seen in 2022.

“Furthermore, the HTA warns of severe economic repercussions, with an estimated 68% of garden centres expecting to reduce staff due to decreased plant and tree sales and all the associated products that relate to container gardening in particular. These consequences ripple throughout the supply chain, impacting jobs in garden retailers, nurseries, and landscape maintenance services. Many of these businesses are small, family-run establishments that have been passed down through generations and employ members of the local community.

“Given these statistics and the impending threat of a shortage of plants and trees, it is crucial to reassess the accelerated peat ban. The HTA calls for collaborative and responsive engagement with Defra to gain clarity on the policy shift and seek alternative solutions that strike a balance between environmental goals and the wellbeing of the horticultural industry, as well as the wellbeing of the nation.”

Hozelock expands alternative hose offering
GTN Promotion

Hozelock’s alterative hose offering, which features the popular Tuffhoze and Superhoze, has been strengthened this year with the addition of a new expanding hose – Wonderhoze...

The demand for easy-to-use, compact gardening products has increased in recent years, particularly as people are embracing smaller outdoor spaces, such as balconies and courtyards, more than ever before.

Consumers are seeking products that don’t compromise on performance or efficiency, while having the added benefits of being easy to use and not requiring much storage, which is often limited in smaller gardens.

Hozelock’s alterative hose offering, which features the popular Tuffhoze and Superhoze, has been strengthened this year with the addition of a new expanding hose – Wonderhoze.

Made from a woven fabric, which is soft and tactile for the user, the Wonderhoze is available in 12.5m and 25m lengths, making it ideal for small to medium sized gardens.

A key feature of this product is its’ ability to expand up to 3x its length once full of water. The key design choice that sets the Wonderhoze aside from competitors is the absence of elastic within the fabric covering of the hose, which increases the durability, as this is often the first to break under testing.

The inclusion of a smooth inner tube ensures a consistent and effective water flow, plus anti-leak connectors prevent water waste.

As the pressure of water pumping through the hose is constant, Wonderhoze will not kink or twist. Plus, due to the nature of the product and it retracting when not in use, the hose can be put away with ease when compared to traditional PVC hose products.

The Wonderhoze is available now and has an RRP of £39.99 for the 12.5m and £49.99 for the 25m.

For more information, visit: https://www.hozelock.com/product/wonderhoze/

Groves launches peat free multi-purpose compost

Groves Nursery and Garden Centre has launched its own 100 per cent peat-free, multi-purpose compost – the first garden centre in West Dorset to do so.

More and more gardeners are going peat free in a bid to tackle climate change.

This comes ahead of the complete ban on the sale of peat-based composts in England next year. In a pioneering move and as part of its commitment to the environment, Groves Nursery and Garden Centre has launched its own 100 per cent peat-free, multi-purpose compost – the first garden centre in West Dorset to do so.

Created from a unique combination of Forest Gold wood fibre, composted bark, and clay, Groves multi-purpose compost is a proven all-rounder.

The family-run garden centre has been testing the special blend of compost in its own nurseries for more than a year.

Now they use it exclusively for everything from seed sowing to striking cuttings, potting on, and filling containers and baskets.

Charlie Groves, managing director at Groves Garden Centre, said: ‘I’m proud to say we’re now 100 per cent peat free here at Groves. Taking the essential step to reformulating our much-loved, multi-purpose compost is a great milestone for us and the environment. We’ve tested and tested and tested it in our own nurseries to get the formula just right. We were finding other peat-free composts were drying out too quickly so the added wetting agent in ours has been a real game changer. Our compost is free draining, but still holds onto moisture as a result. The bark provides excellent aeration and drainage and we’ve added essential nutrients to last for three months.’

For those gardeners who have found going peat free frustrating, Mr Groves had the following advice: ‘Going peat free has been a learning curve for us all,’ he said
‘We’ve found the key is to water slightly more frequently and to feed more frequently too. I would advise feeding containers and hanging baskets every week in the growing season and seedlings when the first true leaves come through. We use our compost for everything but mix it with vermiculite for seed sowing. The look and feel might be slightly different to what everyone is used to, but we’ve found that working the compost through your fingers helps.’

Groves is committed to being a peat-free centre, not only to protect Peatlands across the UK and Europe, but also to prevent tens of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. Peatlands act as a store for carbon so when dug up, this carbon is released and contributes to greenhouse gas levels. Peatlands also provide a rich habitat for a number of animals and birds.

At £8.99 a bag or £15 for two, using Groves 100 per cent Peat-Free, Multi-Purpose compost is also an affordable way to do your bit for the climate. And for those wanting to cut down on car journeys, Groves offers free local delivery on orders over £40.

Handy to launch partnership with AVA pressure washer specialist at Glee

British garden equipment manufacturer and distributor Handy is excited to announce a new partnership with Norwegian pressure washer specialist AVA, whose product lines are designed and built on a sustainable ethos: durable, long lasting, and easy to maintain. The partnership will be officially announced at this year’s Glee (27-29th June 2023 at the NEC, Birmingham), on Handy’s stand 20H20-J21.

There are four AVA pressure washer ranges which will be available to UK retailers through Handy, to meet different customer needs and price points. Each come with a warranty of up to 20-years.

AVA’s premium pressure washer ranges – Evolution and Master – feature long-lasting metal pumps with four cylinders for durability and performance; Evolution is also available with six cylinders for extra power. They have been designed with a low centre of gravity for stability, and a “follow-me” hose reel.  Evolution has the added advantage of a tool tray for easy placement of nozzles.

The Smart and Go AVA pressure washer ranges are built to the same quality, but provide a lower price entry point. Smart pressure washers have been designed with a compact form of a three cylinder V3 pump and a rollover-proof design. It has a number of useful features such as the “follow-me” hose reel, short pistol and practical zoom lance.

Commenting on this latest addition to Handy’s ever growing product portfolio, Mark Moseley, Sales & Marketing Director, said: “With a multiple award winning product range, and an ethos centred around sustainability that is very much in line with our own, AVA is a welcome addition to the Handy family of quality brands. AVA of Norway are passionate about their products and want them to last. Their focus on maintenance of solid products is simply a good environmental measure.

“What’s more, these pressure washers easily compete with leading brands in the UK, but with added features and an excellent price point. We are very much looking forward to introducing them to retailers at Glee, who we think will be very pleasantly surprised by the margins to be made on such a good quality product range.”

Can you support Greenfingers with a Glee Product Promotion?

The Greenfingers Charity and the team at the garden retail’s leading exhibition, Glee, are asking exhibitors at this year’s show to consider supporting the children’s hospice garden charity with a special product promotion...

The Greenfingers Charity and the team at the garden retail’s leading exhibition, Glee, are asking exhibitors at this year’s show to consider supporting the children’s hospice garden charity with a special product promotion.

Many Glee exhibitors have supported Greenfingers in the past, with the likes of Vivid Arts, Primeur, Woodmansterne, Evergreen Garden Care, Woodlodge, Zest for Leisure and Deco-Pak, supporting the charity with everything from rabbit ornaments, doormats, greetings cards, compost, planters and play sand.  And now, as the industry gets ready for the 2023 edition of Glee, the charity is hoping that at least 25 brands will consider supporting the charity throughout the 2024 season.

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at Greenfingers said: “We’re grateful for every penny raised but recognise that not every business has the time to allocate to fundraising challenges. Product promotions are a superbly simple yet effective way to make a financial contribution to the charity. Previous companies have enjoyed great commercial success for their ‘Greenfingers ranges’ and we hope that many more Glee exhibitors will be open to the possibilities it offers.”

Glee’s Event Director, Matthew Mein, added: “At Glee we are proud to support the Greenfingers Charity and we hope that many of our 400+ exhibitors will look to support via product promotions ahead of the 2024 season. It’s a great way to create some buzz on stand and to offer something unique to retailers, whilst also supporting the continuation of Greenfingers’ exceptional work in children’s hospices across the country.”

How does it work

Product promotions are an incredibly easy way for brands to fundraise for Greenfingers.  Whether a product is specifically created for the charity or allocated from an existing product range, all companies have to do is commit to donating an agreed sum from the sale of each item. The Greenfingers team will also work with suppliers to ensure product packaging highlights their support of the charity’s work, extending its vital messaging to consumers within the retail environment.  Donations can be allocated to the supplier’s annual budget forecast, making it a simple but very effective way to show their support.

Jenny Douthwaite, Director of Primeur, which donated over £4,000 to Greenfingers in 2020 said: “Running a product promotion for Greenfingers was so easy and such a great way to support the charity. Not only could we raise vital funds but the brand awareness it created on the shop floor opened up the charity to a whole new audience. It was certainly a hugely worthwhile approach to fundraising that we would highly recommend to others.”

GIMA is encouraging new business and innovators to consider entering the 2023 GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund, with this year’s winner being unveiled at Glee.

Introduced in 2014 – and supported by Glee ever since - the fund offers the winner an unrivalled prize package, including a grant of up to £6,000 which includes a year’s full GIMA membership, plus a wide range of business support tools including free exhibition space at Glee and free PR support during the event. In addition, the winners package also includes design, development and manufacturing or marketing cost support up to the value of £3,000; access to an industry business consultant; one-year ACID (Anti Copying In Design) membership; and an advert in the next GIMA Product Digest.

Since its inauguration, seven highly deserving winners have been crowned, all of which have gone on to witness significant core growth including Green Digit (SeedCell), Natural Grower, PotMate™, Vivagreen, Bloomin Amazing and Qwickhose, who scooped the award in 2022. Since their win, Qwickhose has had a busy time building new retail relationships and promoting Qwickhose’s unique wing-lock system which is changing the game when it comes to hose connectors. Made entirely in the UK, Qwickhose’s original connector is seeing its family expand with new designs on the horizon, including a set of mini spray heads, a multi-spray gun, a double-ended wing lock hose joiner and a double male hose coupler. A first look at these new products can be seen at Glee 2023 where the company will return one year after being crowned GISCF winners 2022.

Talking about the value of the win, Qwickhose’s Michelle Doughty said: “Winning the GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund was a huge confidence boost for us. It is no mean feat completely redesigning a product that has existed for as long as anyone can remember! The award provided us with an invaluable sales pitch, which assisted in generating sales. We know we have a fantastic product; we just need to educate people on this and mentioning the GISCF award gets people’s attention and instils a confidence in them to make the purchase.”

As GIMA make preparations to crown the 2023 winner on the first day of Glee 2023 (Tuesday 27th June) - GIMA Director, Vicky Nuttall said: “Armed with just an idea and a prototype, or a product that represents the investment of a lifetime, each year we see an influx of brands keen to break into the garden retail market. Wanting to support and celebrate this grassroot development, the GISCF is there to help these inventors and small businesses navigate a new marketplace and to, hopefully, accelerate their growth. We’re excited to see this year’s entries and to revealing our winner next month.”

Businesses interested in entering the GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund in 2023 are invited to do so by visiting the GIMA website and completing the online application form ahead of the closing date of May 31st, 2023. The full criteria on eligibility to enter can also be found here.

Hands-on training helps to lay some foundations in landscape industry

The Horticultural Unit at Pershore High School in Worcestershire has been growing strongly for over nine years. Students from the school have their own plots and get to undertake a variety of horticultural training working towards their RHS Introductory and Level 1 qualifications.

The Year 11 cohort this year have also benefited from a day course “Introduction to Landscaping” at TASK, the only independent landscape training centre in ‘the heart of’ England, who provide accredited courses to train professional landscape designers, installers and gardeners.

Rupert Keys the Founder and MD at TASK said: “A lovely group of talented and really interested pupils who are in their final year of their RHS Level 1 in Practical Horticulture. It was great to see their enthusiasm and confidence grow as they worked with our trainers and were eager to have a go at a range of landscaping skills.

It was great to be able to host this group, and hopefully we have given them a taste for what the landscape industry has to offer as a career to expand their horticultural experience and may introduce at least some of them to the opportunities in horticulture.”

TASK Trainer, Dave Sewell added: “Our training barn just lit up when the students started laying the bricks. Absolutely fantastic bunch of pupils. Students were able learn a broad range of practical skills in landscaping installation and maintenance with TASK. Hopefully some great more things to come with amazing young people joining our industry. We all had a brilliant time.”

Anne Watson, Head of Horticulture at Pershore High School, and Headmaster Phil Hanson both attended the training course with their students who are now sitting their GCSE exams, and said: “Gaining hands on experience from skilled the crafts people at TASK is so valuable to our students as they move on in their lives. This group have been involved with the displays the school have helped create at both BBC Gardeners World Live and Chelsea Flower Show in the past couple of years. Horticulture holds such a variety of opportunities for people to create a career and earn a good living from.

"It was a great opportunity for the group to get this taste for landscaping and the facilities at TASK are just perfect for skills like this that we cannot demonstrate at school.  Our thanks to Rupert, Dave and all the team at TASK as well as a big thanks to OX Tools UK for providing the students with the tools they used as well as some goodies to take away, including sunglasses!

"As a school we are very fortunate to have the support of businesses including TASK, St. Peters Garden Centre, Bransford Webbs Nurseries, Blue Diamond and Westland Horticulture.”

The Colegrave Seabrook Foundation supported the training and Trustee, Neil Gow, who also helps train and asses the students in their horticultural techniques at the school, said: “In addition to supporting students through the scholarships the Foundation offer to those already committed to their careers in horticulture, the charity is doing an increasing amount to seek to attract young people into horticulture as a career. Our recently launched series of podcasts “Cultivate Your Future” talks to real people about their career journeys in the industry as it seeks to inspire and educate people with insights into opportunities available within the profession of horticulture.

"The Foundation could not achieve what we do without the co-operation and loyalty of our sponsors and supporters across the horticultural industry.”

New RHS-endorsed planting tools from Burgon & Ball

This season Burgon & Ball is plugging into the passion for planting, with six new planting tools joining its flagship RHS-endorsed range of stainless steel gardening tools...

This season Burgon & Ball is plugging into the passion for planting, with six new planting tools joining its flagship RHS-endorsed range of stainless steel gardening tools.

The three new trowels, short-handled perennial spade, and small digging spade and fork have been specially developed to make particular planting tasks easier, with eye-catching designs that bring the wow factor.

Planting continues to be the top-selling category of stainless steel tools, with trowels and spades leading the way. It’s easy to see why: planting is one of the more creative and satisfying tasks in the garden. Anyone with outdoor space loves adding a splash of colour to bed, border, pot or planter – even if they don’t call themselves a gardener.

To help retailers make the most of this passion for planting, Burgon & Ball is adding no fewer than four new RHS-endorsed stainless steel hand tools for planting, plus extensions to its top-selling range of digging spades and forks. All these new additions carry a lifetime guarantee.

The Groundbreaker trowel (RRP £13.99) builds on the huge success of Burgon & Ball’s award-winning* Groundbreaker spade. The distinctive shape echoes the design of the Groundbreaker, with a pointed, sharpened head to slice easily through the most challenging ground. A retrofit display option allows retailers to add this trowel to existing Groundbreaker stands, maximising sales from the existing FSDU footprint.

Also building on the success of an exisiting product is the new short-handled perennial spade (RRP £22.99). The new version combines the distinctive head shape of the hugely popular perennial spade, but in response to consumer feedback it feaures a shorter handle. The short handle offers great control, giving greater precision and enhanced digging power to gardeners who like to get up close to their plants. It’s ideal for digging while kneeling.

The eye-catching shape of the new planting trowel (£12.99) is sure to entice gardeners to add it to their tool collection. The short, wide head has a pointed, sharpened tip to slice easily through ground. The ergonomic design make the trowel a delight to use: the head is in line with the handle rather than angled, making digging easier. This versatile trowel is useful for shallower digging and scooping when planting bulbs, bedding or plug plants, and is ideal for container gardening.

Next, the new weeding trowel (RRP £15.99) offers the last word in versatility. An extremely effective weeding tool, this trowel re-imagines the existing RHS-endorsed container knife, but with a sleek mirror-polished stainless steel finish to make it sharper, smoother - and altogether more covetable. There’s a choice of serrated or straight blades to cut roots, and a notch for tackling long tap roots. The trowel is also perfect for planting, with a slender shape that’s ideal for digging in dense planting, and a handy depth gauge for planting bulbs. This extremely useful all-rounder is ideal for containers as well as tightly-planted borders, and is sure to find many fans.

Finally, there’s the small-but-mighty small digging spade and fork (RRP £32.99 each) which join Burgon & Ball’s line-up of RHS-endorsed large digging tools. Perfect for gardeners who prefer a smaller or lighter spade and fork, these tools are ideal for digging in tightly-planted beds and borders. Made to the same specification as their larger cousins, the small digging spade and fork feature double riveted ‘Y’ handles in FSC hardwood, with strapped socket in double gauge steel for strength. This small spade and fork are covered by a lifetime guarantee.

All these new RHS-endorsed stainless steel additions have been designed to inspire gardeners to make planting easier and even more enjoyable. Highly efficient and beautifully-designed tools make an irresistable combination, even for gardeners who already own planting tools. These new additions are sure to help retailers make the most of the passion for planting this season.

Dobbies celebrated National Children's Gardening Week (27 May-4 June) with the launch of a nationwide search to find its new Little Seedlings Ambassadors. The garden centre will also host a free workshop on the brilliant world of bugs on Sunday 4 June.

The UK’s leading garden centre is looking for eager young gardeners to encourage the younger generation to give gardening a go and do their part for the wildlife and environment around them. These ambassadors will be the new faces of Dobbies’ free monthly Little Seedlings Club workshops aimed at those aged 4-10 years.

Successful applicants will get involved in the monthly workshops, write articles for the website, and may even feature on the Dobbies podcast. Entering is easy, with budding gardeners invited to apply via dobbies.com where they will complete a short form.

The Brilliant World of Bugs theme for June’s workshop was chosen by William, age 3 who attends Dobbies’ Carlisle monthly children’s gardening club.

During this free session, Dobbies’ horticulture experts will teach children how to identify different bugs, including the Allium Leaf Miner and Box Tree Caterpillar, and where to find them. They will also learn how to care for bugs and take part in a craft session creating a butterfly out of a paper plate.

Dobbies’ Community and CSR Communications Executive, Chloe Bell, explained: “We can’t wait to hear from young gardening enthusiasts. Our Little Seedlings Club is a very popular free session, allowing children to understand, explore, and connect with plants, wildlife, and the environment around them. Ideally, we’re looking for young ambassadors who share a passion for these elements and have the confidence to share this enthusiasm with their peers.

“Our June session, during National Children’s Gardening Week, is a great opportunity for newbies to come along and see what our Little Seedlings Club is all about. We hope to educate children on the fascinating world of garden bugs.”

Advance booking is required to secure a free spot at Dobbies’ June Little Seedlings Club session. For more information on how children can participate visit,Dobbies.com/Little Seedlings.

Little Seedlings Club is currently not running at Dobbies’ Beaconsfield, Hungerford and Keston stores.

Guardians can do this on the child’s behalf and applications are open from 26 May to 16 June.

Agapanthus africanus 'Su Casa'

Agapanthus africanus 'Su Casa' is the blue variation of Agapanthus africanus 'Mi Casa'. 'Su Casa' produces 2 to 3 flowers on each leaf sprout, this ensures that on a P9 the plant already produces 7 to 8 flowers, and as an end product in C2/C3 it is a sea of flowers! This flowering power makes the plant available much faster than other Agapanthus varieties. Its compact growth habit (maximum 60 cm high incl. flower) also makes Agapanthus africanus 'Su Casa' a great addition logistically. This cultivar was selected from more than 20,000 seedlings in Belgium. The breeding process focused on as many flower stems as possible and at the same time a plant that fills the pot quickly and is healthy. The plant is won by Agapanthus BV from Aalter (Belgium), plant breeders' rights protection has been requested. Van Vliet New Plants BV from Stroe submitted the plant for the novelty inspection.

The HTA shines spotlight on Member and Advocacy Success at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023

The Horticultural Trades Association members are celebrating success at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, with 18 awards being won by HTA and Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) members, including the esteemed Best in Show recognition and a coveted People's Choice award.

Additionally, the HTA's active participation, through an engaging tradestand and events, enabled guests and politicians to discuss vital subjects, solidifying its commitment to fostering a vibrant and thriving horticultural industry.

Among the standout garden designs from HTA and APL members at Chelsea this year, the prestigious Best in Show title was awarded to Horatio's Garden, built by APL members Ryan Alexander Associates Ltd. This adaptive garden prioritises the needs of individuals with different mobility requirements, promoting the health and wellbeing benefits of green spaces.

In total, for the garden awards, APL members took home three golds (Ryan Alexander Associates Ltd, Landscape Associates and Landcraft), six silver gilt (Landorm, Garden Club London and Landscape Associates) and two silver medals (Big Fish).

The School Food Matters Garden, built by Landscape Associates, was also awarded the BBC / RHS People’s Choice Award for the Sanctuary / All About Plants Garden. This garden was designed for children to scramble through narrow paths, tactile stone, and bright planting. They not only learn about where food comes from and the challenges of climate change, but they also have their voices expressed on the giant mural, which looks over this inspiring, fun space.

The media also recognised the remarkable work of the Gadd Brothers, whose contribution to the Garden of Unity became a prominent backdrop for the first Chelsea Flower Show wedding.

In addition to the member wins, RHS Chelsea Flower Show featured renowned nurseries and industry suppliers from the HTA membership. Exhibitors such as Burgon and Ball, Barcham Trees, Burncoose Nurseries (Gold), David Austin Roses (Gold), Fiskars, Gardenart Swimming Ponds, Mr Fothergills Seeds, Peter Beales Roses (Gold), Raymond Evison Clematis (Gold), Taylors Bulbs (Gold), and Tropical Plants UK (Silver Gilt) delighted visitors with their exceptional products and horticultural expertise.

APL member expertise was also showcased among the tradestands, with Garden House Design skillfully crafting their stand to claim an impressive 5-star rating. Additionally, Langdale Landscapes contributed to the success by helping construct the David Harber Sculptures stand, also achieving a 5-star rating. The HTA’s own tradestand, showcasing the association's commitment to excellence within the industry and benefitting wider society, received a well-deserved 4-star award in its first year of exhibiting at the show, thanks to the support of their APL members.

In addition to the award success, the HTA organised important policy briefings throughout the week, highlighting the significance of the horticultural sector and advocating for its growth and investment.

The HTA recognises the importance of support and awareness for the horticultural industry in Westminster. With members in almost every UK parliamentary constituency and 30 million gardeners, the sector plays a vital role in shaping sustainable and thriving green spaces. The engagement with policymakers during RHS Chelsea Flower Show allows the HTA to emphasise the need for investment and growth in horticulture to ensure its prosperous future.

Notable moments during the week included a meeting with Defra Secretary of State and Ministers Therese Coffey MP, Mark Spencer MP, and Trudy Harrison MP on Monday. The HTA also congratulated Baroness Fookes on receiving the RHS Horticulture Award from King Charles.

On Tuesday, the HTA continued its advocacy efforts by hosting the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Gardening and Horticulture (APPG) and the House of Lords Horticulture Inquiry Committee. These engagements provided a platform to discuss and address important issues facing the horticultural industry.

On Thursday, the HTA organised a small breakfast for cross-party MPs, followed by a tour of the show. The association also welcomed visitor stakeholders, including the Agriculture Attaché from the Dutch Embassy, further expanding the reach and influence of the horticultural sector.

Fran Barnes, HTA CEO, said:

"We are immensely proud of all our HTA members who showcased their exceptional talents at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023. Their breathtaking work and dedication to environmental sustainability were truly inspiring. The combination of outstanding gardens, stunning products, and impactful policy briefings reinforces the importance of horticulture in creating sustainable and thriving green spaces. RHS Chelsea Flower Show also serves as a powerful platform for the HTA to foster relationships with key decision-makers, advocate for the industry, and provide them with an opportunity to meet with our members.”

Greenfingers Charity Donations

Moreover, the HTA continued their contributions beyond the show floor. The remaining plants on the HTA tradestand that could not be repurposed with the rest of the stand were sold on the last day of Chelsea, raising money for Greenfingers, a charity dedicated to creating magical gardens for children's hospices.

The team from the Garden Centre Association have a stand at Glee this month where existing members and those interested in finding out more about the organisation can drop by.

The GCA will be at the event at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham in Hall 8, Stand 8C70-D71 from June 27 until 29.

Peter Burks, Chief Executive at the GCA, says: “Glee is the largest horticultural industry exhibition and most of our members will be attending, so it’s a great opportunity to invite them over to our stand to have a good catch up face-to-face. It’s one of the most important trading events in the gardening industry calendar.

“Not only is it the perfect show for garden centre staff to find out the latest horticultural news, see the newest products on offer, meet suppliers old and new and source exciting new supply partners, but it is also a chance to catch up with other GCA members and to network.

“I will be attending and I look forward to catching up with as many members as possible during the course of the event. We’ve a lounge area with tables and chairs that’s perfect for anyone keen to come and have a sit down and to chat with us.”

More than 400 brands will be at Glee this year including new suppliers and some never before seen at the show.

Thousands of new products launch exclusively there every year, from new compost compositions to decorative aggregates, the latest plant varieties, decking, fencing, garden décor, pots, sculptures and statues.

Peter continues: “We’re also looking forward to seeing the Glee Talent Store finalists’ pop-up store designs, which will be at the show too. This was a joint initiative we hosted with the Glee Talent Store team. Congratulations to everyone from all the garden centres who took part and to those who have been selected to have their designs displayed at Glee. It’s a fantastic achievement.”

Glee is also the place to see the latest trends and has a dedicated New Product Showcase area that features innovation and new product development.

Peter adds: “Education has always been a key aspect of Glee’s overall offering with ‘The Stage’ the place to learn more about the key trends and topics that are shaping the future of gardening. There’s a three-day agenda with topics including issues surrounding sustainability and ethical consumers and how we can futureproof our industry, which are all things we’re discussing too.

“We’re also looking forward to chatting to anyone who would like to find out more about our association and we’ll be able to provide information for garden centres and suppliers interested in joining us.”

The GCA represents garden centres nationwide.

Through sharing information and its inspection programme the GCA helps members to achieve high standards in customer service, plant quality and reliability.

Time is running out for ornamental growers to showcase their achievements. Entries for the prestigious AIPH International Grower of the Year (IGOTY) Awards 2024 close on 30th June 2023.

Established by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) in partnership with FloraCulture International (FCI), the IGOTY Awards have been championing outstanding achievement in the ornamentals sector since 2009. They recognise best practice in horticultural production by the top ornamental production nurseries from around the globe, celebrating the expertise and energy they give to horticulture. The awards also stimulate and promote best practice by giving global attention to outstanding producers and promoting knowledge throughout the industry.

The awards comprise five categories:

  • Finished plants and trees
  • Young plants
  • Cut flowers and bulbs
  • Sustainability
  • Inspiring business

From among these categories, only one winner will be crowned the ‘AIPH International Grower of the Year 2024’ and receive the ‘Gold Rose’ – the industry’s most coveted prize.

In January 2023, Brookdale Treeland Nurseries Ltd (BTN) was announced as International Grower of the Year 2023 and won the Gold Rose award. BTN is one of the largest and most respected growers of garden plants in Canada. With four farms in Ontario and one in British Columbia, they have a land base of more than 800 acres.

In an interview with FCI, BTN’s CEO Jeff Olsen said: “Personally, this is a highlight of my career and makes me so proud to be named IGOTY 2023 among such a prestigious group of companies. For BTN, this award validates the hard work that our team has been doing and motivates them to push further.

“We set a goal to win this award as a part of our Strategic Planning Process, as we knew how the recognition would be great for our business. I sit on many industry boards and always recommend applying to my peers.”

Candidates can enter the IGOTY Awards 2024 online and entry closes on Friday 30th June 2023. Judging will then take place by a panel of industry experts who will access the entrants on five key criteria; economic performance, innovation, market insight, sustainability and human resources policy.

All winners will be announced at an Awards ceremony in January 2024 alongside IPM Essen. To find out more about the IGOTY Awards and to enter, visit the Event Page. For queries on entering the awards please contact: events@aiph.org

The GTN team had the pleasure of attending the Chelsea Flower Show last week to spot trends that may drive retail sales as the season gets going with warmer, sunnier weather at last.

Purple plants starred across the gardens this year and won the plant of the year: Agapanthus Black Jack

Blue Diamond made their Chelsea debut with Newton's Apple Tree and a Soil Association display

Taylors Bulbs won yet another gold medal for their Grand Pavilion display.

Mr Fothergills had record sales of seeds from their new floral exhibition stand.

Burgon and Ball's new hand tools sold very well at Chelsea 2023.

The Patio Black Spot Company were finalists in the Sustainability Product of the year for Go Ferrous

Amy Stubbs and Eve Kerrigan from British Garden Centres were checking out new ideas for their centres

Bramblecrest further enhanced their market leading position with their exhibit which was always busy.

There were also opportunities to influence key politicians at Chelsea.

And as you'll have seen on the TV coverage there was plenty of re-wilding, wild flowers and even weeds.  Lindum won the Sustainability product of the Year award for their wildflower turf which is plastic free.

GCA’s April figures show an ‘encouraging’ sales increase

The Garden Centre Association’s Barometer of Trade figures for last month (April) have revealed food hall/farm shop and catering continued to perform well while other categories also saw encouraging increases too...

The Garden Centre Association’s Barometer of Trade figures for last month (April) have revealed food hall/farm shop and catering continued to perform well while other categories also saw encouraging increases too.

Across GCA member garden centres, the BoT recorded that catering sales were up 21.63% when compared to April 2022 and food hall/farm shop sales remained good at 9.08%.

GCA CEO, Peter Burks, says: “Also doing well in April were seed & bulb sales, which were up by 19.99%. While outdoor plants showed a 10.39% uplift. Houseplants were up at 7.68% and clothing at 8.18%.

“In fact, 10 of our 13 categories recorded improvements with just three showing negative results. Understandably, given the weather, the furniture & BBQ category took the biggest hit and was down by -33.28%.

“It was great though to see a small increase in sales for the middle month of our peak season. This is very encouraging and all the members I have spoken to recently remain very positive and upbeat. However, considering retail price inflation, it means volumes are still a bit below last year.

“Generally, the trends are as they have been all year, with catering and food doing well, which is good news. It means we’re still seeing plenty of visitors who want to support their local, independent garden centre. However, the unsettled start to our spring, thanks to the poor weather, has meant gardening has suffered.

“As a gardener myself, I know it’s been hard to find days when the weather has been good enough to get outside and get the essential jobs done. The chillier, unsettled weather has also meant furniture sales are still to get going. No one really had the option of sitting or entertaining outside much during April, even over the long Easter weekend.”

The April BoT figures also revealed garden sundries were down at -3.05%. However, pet and aquatic sales were up 3.08% and gifts also saw an uplift of 2.46%.

Overall sales for the month were up 0.79% with a year-to-date variance of -6.67%.

The GCA BoT reports are compiled using actual sales figures and provide an up-to-date trading position statement. They are made available mid-month following the end of the prior month after all member garden centres have submitted their results.

The BoT reports allow members to compare their trading positions with other centres.

Agapanthus 'Black Jack' crowned Plant of the Year

Thompson & Morgan is celebrating after its Agapanthus 'Black Jack' was crowned the RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year 2023...

Thompson & Morgan is celebrating after its Agapanthus 'Black Jack' was crowned the RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year 2023.

The company said: "When four of our entries were shortlisted, we hardly dared to hope that one of these would take the winning spot. We are immensely proud to have scooped a hat trick of winners, with Hydrangea ‘Euphoria Pink’ in second, followed by Weigela 'Camouflage' in third. With some strong contenders in this year’s competition, this stunning achievement has been made all the more special."

'Black Jack' offers bigger flowers and more blooms through the season. This amazing Agapanthus produces 10 times as many florets per flowerhead for a flowering season twice as long as its competitors.

Easy to grow and heat tolerant, 'Black Jack' boasts strong vigour and a striking presence in borders and containers. Large flowerheads are filled with black buds that open to deep black-purple striped blooms – these fade to deep purple and take on a dazzling metallic sheen with age.

De Wet Plant Breeders, South Africa, set out to produce disease resistant, vigorous, heat-tolerant and multi-flowering cultivars and a black cultivar was always high on the wish list. 17 years into the program, they finally got "the one"! 'Black Jack' is a unique Agapanthus that’s the result of years of dedicated hybridised breeding.
