Langlands Nurseries Ltd have officially announced the purchase of another garden centre in Loxley just outside Sheffield, as reported exclusively in GTN Xtra at the weekend.
It becomes the third garden centre in the Langlands group. Along with the original and larger site at Shiptonthorpe, York, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last summer, Langlands also has a second store at Whinmoor Leeds purchased in 2009. Langlands Loxley, formally Garden Style at Rhinegold Garden Centre, is sited on the North/West of Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District National Park, making it the most scenic garden centre of the group with stunning views from anywhere you stand in the outside plant area. Langlands director James Ducker said: “This is an exciting time for us, and work on site is already underway to bring the quality and exceptional service to Sheffield that makes us one of Yorkshire’s leading garden centre shopping attractions.
"We are delight to welcome Diane the centre manager and her team of 20 plus staff into the Langlands family." The centre boasts a large amount of specimen plants growing in the grounds, including many unusual varieties that can be seen in full splendour while picking your way through a network of paths. Former owners Pat and Kerry Brears, who have owned the garden centre for nine years were sad to hand over the business but have not gone too far away to continue and concentrate on their landscape and garden design company from a site just behind the centre. Langlands director Ian Ducker added: “The purchase of the site and expansion of the company would not be possible without the fantastic teams of staff we have in both our centres.. We are also very excited to be adding to the almost 30,000 Loyalty Card Customers we already have and offer the gardeners of Sheffield some great offers with our Loyalty Card."
Langlands started out in business in 1955 in Bingley, West Yorkshire by Walter Ducker. The business moved to Shiptonthopre in 1964. It now employs nearly 200 staff with the inclusion of the new centre. Walter’s two sons Robert and John, along with their two sons James and Ian, are all directors of the company.

Inspectors Choice Award: Alton Garden Centre for their BBQ area The awards are decided by the results of the annual inspections, which take place at all GCA garden centres. Garden centres have no advance warning about when their inspection will take place and they do not have the option to turn away the inspector. The Best Garden Centre and Best Destination Garden Centre awards went to the members that scored the highest overall mark in the area in their annual inspections. The top scoring centres overall, nationally, in both the Destination Garden Centre and Garden Centre categories will be re-inspected before the titles of Garden Centre of the Year and Destination Garden Centre of the Year are announced at the GCA annual conference taking place in January 2016. Iain added: “We are really looking forward to the remaining awards meetings taking place this week. “Stratford Garden Centre in Clifford Chambers, Stratford-Upon-Avon, will host the Midlands regional award meeting tonight from 5pm and the regional award meeting for the South Thames area will take place at Haskins Garden Centre in West End, Southampton on Wednesday, July 22 with inspector Andy Campbell in attendance.”

Eye tracking can unlock bestsellers plant potential
The results of an HTA eye tracking research project could provide the key to unlocking increased plant sales for HTA members in the coming years. David Denny, research manager for the HTA, and Boyd Douglas-Davies presented the initial findings of some eye tracking research at the HTA Plant Retailing seminar held as part of the Ball Colegrave Summer Spectacular this week...
The results of an HTA eye tracking research project could provide the key to unlocking increased plant sales for HTA members in the coming years.
David Denny, research manager for the HTA, and Boyd Douglas-Davies presented the initial findings of some eye tracking research at the HTA Plant Retailing seminar held as part of the Ball Colegrave Summer Spectacular this week.
The eye tracking research took place at Hilltop Garden Centre earlier this year and the initial findings already highlight some key points that can be acted upon to increase sales. The full research analysis will be completed and presented at the HTA Futures conference in September.
Three of the results that Boyd and his Hilltop team have been able to work upon are:
1. Watering. The eye tracking clearly shows that when watering is taking place customers spend more time focussed on the potential trip hazards rather than looking at the plants they intended to purchase. Hilltop solution: employ someone to come in and water at 5.30am through until 9am so that no hoses are out as potential hazards and sales distractions during opening hours.
2. Living labels. Living labels are big attractions and focal points – the bigger, more colourful and more scented the better. Hilltop solution: make more of arches to display climbing plants and use signs to give customers permission to enjoy the scent of plants.
3. Plants first, labels second. The eye tracking illustrated that customers look at plants first - flowers in particular - and only after looking at a plant or group of plants do they look at the signs and labels. Hilltop solution: Don't place any POS in front of plants. Put good signage at head height, clearly visible behind where the plants are displayed, and use bigger fonts – 98% of adults over 50 need to wear glasses.
