Garden industry pays tribute to the Queen

The garden industry has been paying its own tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II following her sad passing on Thursday.

James Barnes, chairman of the HTA, said: “It is with huge sadness that we learnt of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The HTA would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty for the immeasurable stability, dignity and prestige she has bestowed on this nation in so many ways and for so many years. For us in particular in the field of Horticulture. She was of course a hugely keen gardener and took special interest in the development of the gardens at Buckingham Palace, Balmoral and Sandringham. Her love of countryside unrivalled.

“Her attendance at Chelsea every year testament to that wider interest and support of the industry. The iconic planting of a tree so symbolic in so many of her duties and ceremonies. And just this year the huge take up of tree planting across the land to celebrate her platinum jubilee under the banner of the Queen’s Canopy.

“Many of our members have had or have the patronage of the Royal household through the Royal Warrant and will have had the pleasure and privilege that that honour bestows.

“She will be hugely missed not just in our country but across the world. Our thoughts and hearts are with all the Royal Family at this poignant time. God save the King.”

The garden centre industry has been paying its respects to HM The Queen through messages and the adoption of sombre images and colouring on its social media platforms. They thank her for her extraordinary service to the country and pass on condolences to the Royal Family, while others also recognise her support and love of gardening and plants.

Hillier Garden Centre’s, one of several companies within the horticultural sector to hold a Royal Warrant, thanked the Queen for her unstinting support through visits to its exhibits at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Some garden centres closed the day after the announcement of the Queen’s passing while others including the team at The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, Brecon, created a Tree of Thanks display in its plantaria. The commemorative display will be added to by customers writing messages of thanks on cards and hanging them on the tree.

At Perrywood Tiptree a picture of The Queen displayed on an easel was surrounded by a bouquet of everlasting red, white and blue flowers and in Shiptonthorpe, Langlands Garden Centre is planning to plant a special rose and create a memorial display to express its appreciation and gratitude.

Royal Warrant holders, Vitax Ltd posted as above on their website.

Raemoir, the garden centre closest to Balmoral include the post above on their facebook page.

Glendoick Garden Centre, which may well be on the route the Queens coffin takes to Edinburgh today, posted: "Glendoick Garden Centre joins with people around the United Kingdom and the world in mourning the passing of Queen Elizabeth IIl.  We offer sincere and deepest condolences to the Royal Family at this very sad time." along with this photo of the Queen and the now King Charles III tree planting.

Some retailers have taken the decision to close on the day of the funeral, Monday 19 September, whilst others have made decisions to limit their marketing activity during the period of mourning.

The Greener Gardening Company set to close

The Greener Gardening Company, the UK retail arm of Irish peat company Bord na Mona (BnM), is to close, with the reported loss of up to 100 jobs, say industry reports reaching GTN Xtra during the past few days...

The Greener Gardening Company, the UK retail arm of Irish peat company Bord na Mona (BnM), is to close, with the reported loss of up to 100 jobs, say industry reports reaching GTN Xtra during the past few days.

BnM is believed to have rejected the idea of selling the business as a going concern, despite interest from a number of potential purchasers. GTN understands rivals may already have registered interest in acquiring the company’s assets.

BnM’s PR company issued the following statement on Friday afternoon:

The Greener Gardening Company (TGGC) has notified its employees of its intention to consult on ceasing production at its sites in Kirkby and Somerset.  TGGC is committed to saving jobs wherever possible. Every effort will be made to avoid compulsory redundancies and to consider suitable alternative employment via relocation within the BnM group.”

No details about the reasons for the closure have been offered.

Sources say BnM will start consultation with employees later this month, with a view to closing its sites on 20 October.

In 2020, BnM re-branded its UK retail business as the Greener Gardening Company, operating from Kirkby, near Liverpool, offering a range of peat-reduced and peat-free growing media brands, including Happy Compost, Growise and Richmoor.

BnM itself, historically dependent on peat extraction, has in recent years re-positioned itself as an ecologically-responsible company adapting to changing needs in the climate emergency. With the complexities of Brexit and a UK ban on sales of peat products in retail horticulture in the offing, the Greener Gardening Company was designed to lead the way towards a peat-free future on the UK mainland.

In July BnM announced plans to replace its Newbridge, Co.Kildare, headquarters with a new state-of-the-art energy-efficient building. The company employs 240 people in the town.

As the key season for 2022 comes to an end, Hozelock is looking ahead to a promising 2023 which involves a new CEO at the helm and the acquisition of an additional manufacturing facility.

CEO appointment

Moving the business forward is new CEO Simon Davies, who has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the sector having worked at Hozelock for more than 10 years. In his previous role of Group Sales and Marketing Director, Simon worked closely with key stakeholders, including suppliers, customers and retailers, which will provide valuable insight to move the business forward.

Increased manufacturing capabilities

Hozelock’s long-term growth strategy also includes the recent multi-million-pound investment in additional manufacturing and warehouse facilities at its base in the West Midlands. The increase of 6,000 sqm will enable the business to expand UK manufacturing capabilities in response to increasing consumer demand, both in the UK and internationally.

NPD in the pipeline

Next year, Hozelock’s already-impressive product portfolio will further expand with a whole new host of products, including an overhaul of the oscillating sprinklers range, Wonderhoze, a new alternative hose, and a brand-new Solar-Heated Shower.

Simon Davies, Hozelock CEO, said: “This is an extremely exciting time for both myself and the business. With increased manufacturing capabilities and a number of innovative new products in the pipeline, including those in brand-new categories, 2023 promises to be a busy year for Hozelock. I look forward to seeing how our new products are received by both retailers and gardeners alike and to building on our relationships with stakeholders.”

Evergreen Garden Care continues lead in going peat-free

Evergreen Garden Care supports this peat ban and has been committed to reaching a peat-free deadline of 2024, for several years, with sustainability at the centre of its business responsibilities...

Evergreen Garden Care supports this peat ban and has been committed to reaching a peat-free deadline of 2024, for several years, with sustainability at the centre of its business responsibilities.

Transitioning to peat free has been a journey Evergreen has been leading in the gardening industry long before the official ban. Most recently, Evergreen Garden Care made a public commitment in 2021 to switch all products to peat free in under four years across its market-leading garden care brands Miracle-Gro and Levington.

Evergreen Garden Care has faced the challenges of rapidly becoming peat free for years, and setting the industry standard. This includes making actionable commitments to show the gardening industry that peat-free is the way forward. £7 million has been invested this year to increase its peat-free production capacity, which cemented its position as leading the peat-free roadmap. It is also consistently prioritising peat-free products, developing a full peat-free range to meet all gardening needs such as leading on ericaceous peat-free compost, and the launch of continued peat-free NPD.

Evergreen Garden Care announced the 2023 launch of its new John Innes Peat Free Range in June this year, which it will launch under the Levington brand, extending Evergreen Garden Care’s position as the market's most comprehensive and high-quality peat-free range. This uses its own patented wood fibres in the composition to ensure the range performs as well - if not better - than peat-based compost. Evergreen Garden Care also encourages supporting the wider industry and is a key member of all official bodies driving a more sustainable future for growing media, including being a founding member of the Responsible Sourcing Scheme.

Evergreen Garden Care Managing Director, Mark Portman, says “We are dedicated to providing peat-free compost across both of our brands Miracle-Gro and Levington and adding to our high-quality range of sustainable products. It’s important to us to offer eco-friendly solutions to all customers, no matter the budget, which is part of our peat-free pledge. We will continue to lead the peat-free journey by example, both through product action and financial investment, brand communication and also through leading in education and discussion.

James Barnes, Chairman of the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) said: “This £7m investment by Evergreen Garden Care is good news for the horticulture industry and the environment. It’s an example of the great work that many of our compost manufacturer members are making to go peat free.

Evergreen Garden Care will continue its commitment to a peat-free transition, meeting the government's deadline. Furthermore, Evergreen Garden Care joins the wider industry to advocate for access to a greater quantity and quality of alternative materials and policy barriers to be unlocked by the Government to enable an industry-wide transition to peat-free by 2024.

Get ready for new peat-free introductions from RocketGro

RocketGro may be a relatively new name within the world of peat-free growing media, but the team isn’t wasting any time in setting a new standard for the presentation, innovation and breadth of peat-free products being brought to market. Demonstrative of this are the four brand new products set to join the line-up ahead of the new 2023 season...

RocketGro may be a relatively new name within the world of peat-free growing media, but the team isn’t wasting any time in setting a new standard for the presentation, innovation and breadth of peat-free products being brought to market. Demonstrative of this are the four brand new products set to join the line-up ahead of the new 2023 season.

RocketGro’s exciting new 2023 additions – Peat-Free Seed & Cutting Compost with added John Innes, Peat-Free Multi-Purpose Compost with added John Innes, Peat-Free Container & Basket Compost and Peat-Free Beds & Borders Compost – are the result of two key elements for the brand: extensive research and a greater understanding regarding the substrates that are used to give RocketGro products a unique point of difference.

The real alternative

Promising a “real alternative” to those growing media brands that have been sat on garden centre shelves for so long, RocketGro is working hard to demonstrate to garden retailers that visibility of material and processes isn’t just another marketing strategy but something that can and will make a difference in the retail environment, particularly as consumers become more environmentally responsible.

Only adding the best

RocketGro’s highly-effective, professional grade compost blends all benefit from the inclusion of sustainable digestate fibre/composted maize, rye and grass. But, unlike other products on the market, this is not a bought-in benefit! This digestate is, in fact, a by-product of renewable bio-gas production from the company’s own Somerset-based farm. This approach to circular economy production and usage makes RocketGro products uniquely different. Meanwhile, continued development of the digestate results in products that consistently deliver and have the added benefit of improvements being made every season.

For 2023, a longer maturation of the digestate – coupled with the inclusion of new invaluable substrates, such as wood chip and John Innes – means these new additions will offer some of the best results on the market today: something that RocketGro is confident that independent trials at Stockbridge Technology Centre will definitively prove later this year.

RocketGro Director, Toby Thomas said: “RocketGro has a low-carbon, peat-free, 100%-sustainable, Soil Association-approved, UK-grown, -manufactured, -sourced and -produced eco story that is hard to match. With a 12-strong product portfolio, that is continually evolving, we are creating a brand offering that is currently unmatched in this industry. Peat-free growing media isn’t just part of what we do, it’s the very heart of RocketGro and we know that this matters to both retailers and consumers. To those who don’t believe this to be true, watch this space, as we’ll gladly tell you why it should!

“We firmly believe that partnering with RocketGro and stocking our products will enable garden centres and nurseries to work with a reliable and supportive independent peat-free compost manufacturer that has the scale, investment and manpower in place to become the leading affordable, quality, 100% peat-free-only compost producer in the UK. Trust me when I say that we will not deviate from this path!”

In addition to adding four new products to its portfolio, RocketGro has further enhanced its product development team with the recent appointment of two leading independent consultants, who boast more than 80 years of combined horticultural and growing media experience.

Priced to sell

Toby concluded: “Good peat-free compost does not need to be the most expensive on the market, which is why we offer a delivered wholesale price of £3.10-£3.40 for 2023 for a ‘fair fill’ 50-litre bag. This clear cost structure is demonstrative of RocketGro’s commitment to gaining market share by providing garden centres and nurseries with an extremely competitive price point, with a ‘no mid-season price rise guarantee’.”

Garden centre's achievements recognised by Scottish Parliament

AN MSP has recognised Cardwell Garden Centre’s achievements by lodging a motion in the Scottish Parliament about its 60th anniversary.,,

AN MSP has recognised Cardwell Garden Centre’s achievements by lodging a motion in the Scottish Parliament about its 60th anniversary.

Labour’s Paul O’Kane, a West of Scotland List MSP, has visited Cardwell to present two directors of the garden centre. Drew and Kieran Gallagher with a framed copy of the motion, which received wide cross-party support.

The motion describes Cardwell as a “thriving institution for locals and a must-visit spot for tourists” and that it retains “a great care for serving the local community”.

Cardwell was started in 1962 by the late Eric Gallagher, who began with a small nursery, in Gourock. But the success of the business meant it had to move to a bigger site and that’s where Cardwell is just now at Lunderston Bay. The centre is now run by Eric’s sons and daughter – Drew, Kieran and Stefanie.

Paul O’Kane said: “The garden centre is an institution and it has become a must-go-to place for locals as well as tourists who are visiting the area.

“For a family run business to go from strength to strength and reach a 60th anniversary is a remarkable achievement.

“It was pleasure to raise the anniversary with a parliamentary motion and I hope that, if it ends up on a wall, many of the centre’s visitors will notice it and as a result appreciate the length of time the business has been serving the local community.

“The Gallagher family should be very proud of what they’ve built over 60 years and it’s only right that more people find out and take notice of the family’s achievements.”

Cardwell Garden Centre director, Kieran Gallagher said: “We really appreciate the recognition Paul has given us by lodging a motion with the Scottish Parliament marking Cardwell Garden Centre’s 60th anniversary.

“We strive to maintain the high standards our late father, Eric Gallagher brought to the business when he started it back in 1962.

“We’ve served the people in the west of Scotland’s gardening needs for the past 60 years and we’re always looking at ways to improve the service we provide gardeners.

“We also want to give visitors to Cardwell the best retail and leisure experience – whether it’s buying their gardening essentials, enjoying the Patio Café, or children having fun at our activities for young people.”

The motion Paul O’Kane lodged with the Scottish Parliament reads:

  • “That the Parliament understands Cardwell Garden Centre, which is situated in Lunderston Bay, by Gourock, in Inverclyde, is celebrating 60 years of business in 2022;
  • “Understands that Cardwell Garden Centre started as a small family business led by Eric Gallagher, who it understands, with little more than some land, sheds and equipment was able to develop his business into a thriving institution for locals and a must-visit spot for tourists that enjoys over 500,000 visitors a year;
  • “Further understands that as Eric Gallagher passed away in 2013 the centre is now run by his children, Stef, Kieran and Drew; celebrates that Cardwell Garden Centre has after 60 years enjoyed so much success but ultimately retained a great care for serving the local community;
  • “And understands that the centre is already looking to the next 60 years, as it commits itself to the best environmentally friendly practices, including ways to prevent food waste and plant harm.”

STV freeze prices for 2023

Counter to overwhelming inflationary trends, STV have confirmed that they will hold prices on more than 250 core products until the end of February 2023.

STV report rising business costs in line with other UK manufacturers, but have made the bold decision to invest now in a price freeze to protect retail sales.

Edwin Allingham, Managing Director explained “We will hold prices for 6 months, as well as introduce more than 20 price drops where we know promotions can drive volume. We see this is a short-term investment in our future and that of our customers.“

The announcement follows a successful year for the business, with several key categories showing significant growth. Their investment in a trade price freeze is just one of a series of new initiatives being launched for 2023, including a new retail distribution centre and showroom, new production facilities and unique mobile showroom which will be on the road from this Autumn.

Evergreen Garden Care to tackle the three-peak challenges for Greenfingers

Fifteen members of the Evergreen Garden Care team will be donning their walking boots and backpacks as they attempt to tackle the infamous Three-Peaks Challenge, all with the aim of raising over £10,000 for the Greenfingers charity.

Led by National Account Manager, Jessica Nicholson, the team will have 24 hours to take on the biggest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis – 1345m), England (Scafell Pike – 978m), and Wales (Snowdon – 1085m), racing between each to complete this mega challenge before the day is over. In total, the Evergreen team will climb over 3,400m and will spend over 10 hours in the car as they travel from Fort William to Seascale in the Lake District, before finishing their journey at Caernarfon in North Wales.

Not only will the day test the mettle of those taking part, but it is being done for a good reason – to raise vital funds for the Greenfingers charity. This challenge has been specifically set-up to raise funds for one of Greenfingers’ latest garden builds - The Nest Garden at East Anglia Children’s Hospice, The Nook. This garden, one of two to be built at The Nook, has been sponsored by Evergreen and funds raised will help to bring this space to life and help to alleviate the ever-rising costs of these garden builds.

Talking ahead of next week’s adventure, Jessica said: “Greenfingers has always been a charity close to our hearts here at Evergreen Garden Care, so for 2022 we wanted to do something special to support the creation of a garden set to be built in East Anglia.

“The Three-Peaks Challenge will not only bring our community at Evergreen closer and support our mental and physical wellbeing, but it is also in aid of a cause that brings sanctuaries for children and their families.

“The team is motivated, terrified but all around extremely excited to embark on this incredible journey and support this cherished charity. Wish us luck and please donate if you would like to support the cause!”

Anyone wanting to show their support for Evergreen Garden Care can do so by visiting www.justgiving.com/fundraising/evergreen-3-peaks, where the team is hoping to raise well over £10,000.

The Pot Place Garden Centre makes new Ukraine appeal

The Pot Place Garden Centre is launching another appeal to fund emergency vehicles which will be sent to Ukraine...

The Pot Place Garden Centre is launching another appeal to fund emergency vehicles which will be sent to Ukraine.

The garden centre at Plumpton, Penrith, successfully delivered its first ambulance to the Polish Ambulance Service in Przemysl (a small city on the border with Ukraine) and within a few days it was over the border and on the frontline in Ukraine.

Because it was so well received by the garden centre’s Ukrainian contacts it has decided to launch a second appeal to take another ambulance and an ambulance motorcycle to Ukraine.

Posting on its Facebook pages the garden centre said:

“Our friends in Ukraine are still desperately short of emergency medical vehicles. So following our recent succesful trip to donate our first ambulance to The Lviv Ambulance Service (which is now on the frontline) we are launching our next appeal to take another ambulance AND a fast response motorcycle to them.

“Emergency Medical Transport in West Yorkshire will provide us with both the ambulance and the bike at discounted rates and both are fully operational with lights and sirens. We even have the bike on display at the garden centre for everyone to see!

“Alongside this Medical Aid Ukraine (North East) have promised to fill the ambulance with as much trauma equipment as they can fit in so all we need to do is raise the money to buy these vitally needed vehicles.

“We need to raise £12,500 for both, we know we can do it because of the support and commitment of our supporters, customers and our local community. As before we will pay for the fuel, ferries, insurance, return journey and anything else needed to get to Lviv if you can help us to raise the funds we need.

“You can donate in person at the garden centre or online here https://www.justgiving.com/.../ambulance-and-ambulance...

‘Please help us to make use of the fantastic network of contacts we have established here in the north of England, Przemysl (Poland) and of course Lviv – the effort must go on to save lives and support the people and defenders of Ukraine.”

Zest is spearheading an initiative to deliver humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine. The company has coordinated partners and local businesses to fill an articulated lorry with much-needed provisions such as non-perishable food, water, medical and first aid equipment.

Commenting on the initiative, Zest director, Rhys Hughes, said, “One of our employees, Andrzej Dudziak, who is our Zest Polish Sourcing Co-ordinator, based near Gdansk, has been helping out at the Polish / Ukraine border a couple of nights a week and has been in contact with Caritas, the biggest charity in Poland which is also assisting at the border.  Andrzej advised that, despite the huge amount of support already donated, aid is still required.

“At Zest one of our core principles is that we want to contribute to the communities in which we operate so we really wanted to help.  We receive timber garden products from Poland weekly into our Saltney warehouse for redistribution to garden centres across the UK, so this seemed a prime opportunity for us to demonstrate our support for the people on the ground at the Polish border and in Ukraine by providing transport and coordinating this humanitarian aid mission.

“We sent an appeal to local businesses, supply chain and customers requesting a list of items ranging from medical dressings to thermal blankets to batteries and power banks to sleeping bags to non-perishable foods, nappies and sanitary products; and donations poured in.

"It’s fantastic to see so many local businesses, partners and friends come together to support the Ukraine Aid effort.  I’d also like to say a big thank to our supply chain team who have been coordinating donations, warehousing and logistics.”

Over the last twelve years, Zest employees and their P&A Group colleagues have raised more than £130,000 for a variety of charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith Children’s Hospices, Cancer Research UK, Action for Children, Alzheimer’s Society, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Meningitis Now.  To donate to the company’s British Heart Foundation fundraising page, the chosen charity for 2022, please visit www.p-a-group.com/charity.

Zest was established in 2005 to bring high quality, sustainable timber garden products to garden centres, online retailers, builders’ merchants, and major purchasing groups across the UK and Southern Ireland.

Watering aids from elho to help get the balance right

Sustainable plant pot manufacturer elho has a practical range of watering systems to provide a convenient and effective way to give plants the love and attention they deserve, while helping to conserve water, only giving plants what they need to thrive...

With the recent bouts of dry weather, droughts and hosepipe bans, water, or the lack of it, has been a hot topic of conversation over the summer. As the weather cools down and we see more rain, it’s important to remember that houseplants still need a regular top up of water, though – for neglected houseplants it can feel as though there is a never-ending drought!

Sustainable plant pot manufacturer elho has a practical range of watering systems to provide a convenient and effective way to give plants the love and attention they deserve, while helping to conserve water, only giving plants what they need to thrive. They require minimal effort, and are suitable for every type of plant and plant parent.

Self-watering inserts

The self-watering insert is a useful watering aid as it fits neatly into plant pots and has a handy water meter which indicates when the device needs topping up with more liquid. Once replenished, the water will be drip-fed to the plant when it needs it most, meaning plants will be taken care of for weeks to come without needing to have any attention from plant parents.

The ingenious self-watering insert is available in seven sizes, including 17cm, 21cm, 24cm, 28cm, 33cm, 36cm and 43cm, fitting neatly into most elho indoor plant pots. The insert also comes in living black, a neutral shade, making it a subtle addition to your pots, offering a practical watering solution without compromising on style.

Aqua care system

Much like the self-watering inserts, elho’s aqua care system offers a simple way to ensure plants get the right amount of water they need to grow and flourish at all times. Simply fill the ball with water, place it deep into the soil at a slight angle, and let it do the rest. The aqua care will release water whenever necessary to ensure the plant’s soil doesn’t dry up, which is especially helpful to those who overwater their plants in fear of the soil becoming too dry!

It also includes design features like a wide spout to ensure it doesn’t get clogged up with soil, so it can be left to look after plants without constant checking. It’s available in transparent, as well as lime and eggplant for those who prefer to add a pop of colour to brighter colours in their homes. Made from 100% recycled, robust materials, the aqua care system from elho will be keeping both indoor and outdoor plants happy and hydrated year after year.

Greensense aqua care

With an integrated water reservoir and handy water meter, plant owners no longer have to worry about plants going thirsty as elho’s greensense aqua care pot regulates the water for the plant itself and the indicator clearly displays when it needs a top up. The pot also comes equipped with a plug, which can be removed when being used outdoors, to allow excess water to be drained, and inserted for indoor use. Its handy wheels also make it easy to manoeuvre into the perfect spot.

The greensense aqua care pots also offer a stylish and sleek design, with its natural rough texture offering a rugged concrete look and the light concrete and charcoal grey shades achieving a contemporary statement to gardens, balconies, terraces and indoor spaces, especially when planted with architectural plants and grasses. Its round design is available in sizes ranging from 30cm to 43cm and the square design from 30cm to 38cm.

Kyle scoops top award at Four Oaks Trade Show

Production manager at Wyevale Nurseries Kyle Ross has been presented with a special new award – ‘Ambassador for Horticulture’ – at this year’s Four Oaks Trade Show...

Production manager at Wyevale Nurseries Kyle Ross has been presented with a special new award at this year’s Four Oaks Trade Show.

He was named as an ‘Ambassador for Horticulture’ by the show organisers backed by the Horticultural Trades Association.

Wyevale Nurseries’ Head of Business Support, Carol Dickinson says: “This is wonderful news! I entered Kyle on behalf of the company for the Pat Coutts award for excellence in the large business category. But the judges said his entry stood out over and above the others, so they created a separate award, Ambassador for Horticulture, and presented him with that instead! We’re delighted for Kyle and very proud. Congratulations to him on this thoroughly well-deserved award.”

In his winning entry, Kyle, who is a key member of the Young People in Horticulture Association (YPHA), is described by his colleagues at Wyevale Nurseries as inspiring, supportive, committed to change and great fun.

He says: “I was overwhelmed and incredibly honoured to receive this award, completely unexpected, but delighted to have been recognised in the industry. I would like to thank my team at Wyevale Nurseries and YPHA for all their continued support.”

Kyle has a BSc in Horticulture from Pershore College and is one of the Wyevale Nurseries’ young ‘homegrown’ managers, having successfully completed its management training scheme.

Carol adds: “Kyle is a truly inspirational young man and an absolute asset to our business. His work ethic is outstanding and his enthusiasm for plant health and biosecurity is infectious. He is a true ambassador for Wyevale Nurseries, our sector’s Plant Health and for youth in horticulture too.”

Kyle started his career at Wyevale Nurseries on its Management Trainee Programme in 2016, which is a two-year course. Eighteen months in, he was doing so well he carved out a vital role in the team as Plant Health Coordinator.

In 2018, he accepted the position as Production Manager for the container production site and has been in that role for more than four years. He manages four internal departments – crop protection, growing, stock control and new product development.

Kyle adds: “I thoroughly enjoy my job, as no two days at work are ever the same. I am constantly learning and helping those around me to learn too. The challenge of developing the business to adapt to changes in the outside world – environmental, climate, economy etc is what drives me every day.”

As well as his role at Wyevale Nurseries, he’s a proactive committee member for the YPHA, which he joined in 2021 and is now the Bursary Manager.

It’s a great passion of Kyle’s, as it helps likeminded young horticulturalists to share thoughts and ideas. It provides a welcoming community and encourages youth into the sector.

He has received recognition in the trade media for being one of the horticultural industry’s new generation of young, inspirational and influential plantspeople.

In his six years with Wyevale Nurseries so far, Kyle has been the driving force behind ensuring the business was one of the first hardy nursery growers in the UK to achieve a Plant Healthy certified status.

He is a huge champion of plant health, not only at Wyevale Nurseries, but across the industry and is happy to talk to organisations and other nurseries about it.

Kyle was also a member of the steering group, which introduced the Defra-endorsed Plant Health Alliance’s Plant Healthy Certification scheme. He constantly educates and raises awareness both at work and to the wider world across his social media.

To add to all this, Kyle has helped bring to market several new products in the Wyevale Nurseries’ range, which have gone on to be very successful sellers. Of these, his favourites, to date, include Dryopteris Jurassic Gold and Euonymus White Spire.

Wyevale Nurseries main business is to supply garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners with a comprehensive array of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants.

Upbeat Autumn Fair highlights key trends for home, gift & fashion

Autumn Fair, the UK’s leading wholesale marketplace for Home, Gift, Fashion and Sourcing at NEC Birmingham, delivered a comprehensive series of trend-led presentations and catwalk shows..

Autumn Fair, the UK’s leading wholesale marketplace for Home, Gift, Fashion and Sourcing at NEC Birmingham, delivered a comprehensive series of trend-led presentations and catwalk shows, giving the UK’s leading retailers a preview of the hottest products and key looks for the coming years, as well as a platform showcasing over 600 exhibitors across 12 product sectors.

With a continual bustle of orders being written across the show floor, exhibitors and buyers continued to report excellent feedback, positive experiences, and uplifting stories.

Nicola Meadows, Portfolio Director at Autumn Fair said; “I’ve been overwhelmed by the positive vibe at Autumn Fair and MODA, it’s been a very smooth show and people are ready for change, to discover great new products and brands, to network and re-connect with their peers. Autumn Fair creates an incredible environment for the retail community to do business, hear from industry leaders, and be inspired.”

Four times a day the Moda Catwalk came to life with pumping music and the upcoming fashion trends for 2023 including a Jewellery & Watch edit called Leather Not Leather, the super bold Bright Pink Everything, and sultry looks in Dark Romanticism. Lighthouse Clothing, Jayley, Saloos and Fitoutpro also featured in high energy and creative sponsored looks.

Sebastien Renault, Artistic Director at Promostyl took to the MODA Catwalk to introduce a glimpse into AW23/4 womenswear trends for the ‘Committed Woman’. The four key trends explored ‘Nature & Ecology’, ‘Technology’, ‘Luxury’ and ‘Counter Culture’. Nature and Ecology is a trend directly influenced by the impact the climate has on fashion; mimicry is created in nature and ready-to-wear is more respectful and thoughtful. Clothing here is protective in nature, think over-sized layering, quilting, and cocooning. Sebastien elaborated saying; “Nature and Ecology is an atmosphere and mood of comfort. Functionality takes a precedent over aesthetics, volumes are longer, fabrics are comfortable but also technical, think nylons and fleece.” Folk also sees a resurgence under this trend, a collaborative rehabilitating of ancestral gestures are seen across patchwork, geometric friezes, jacquards, embroidery, discreet ethic touches, fringes and knitted accessories. Key colours in this trend are camouflage tones of Maple Brown, Khaki and Chlorophyll Greens offset with emergent colours of Survival Red, and icy blue tones of Polar Bear and Glacier.

Technology brings an update inspired by space, think radical geometry, robotics, hybrid volumes, and technological atmospheres. Sub trends explore Conceptual Tailoring for the more traditional consumer, offset with limit-pushing designs of distorted visuals and technical details. Prints are directly inspired by science, with a nod to science-fiction and fabrics are reflective, utilitarian with futuristic details. Key colours across the trend are neon-pastel shades of lilac Illusion, and mint Energy. Elsewhere Smokey Grey and Titanium are contrasted with Bright Emerald, Yellow Chrome and Copper Metal.

Luxury is an antithesis technology, exploring luxe nostalgia through iconic references from English Heritage for the timeless woman. Preppy continues its resurgence; however the trend is far broader for AW23/4 with equestrian influences throughout (think buckles, horse saddlery, cowboy and lacing), and heritage men’s jackets worn oversized paired with mini-skirts and ballet shoes. Fabrics here are quintessential; tweed, wool, checks. Designers like Burberry are taking this trend a step further with an Ivy League casual, sportswear crossover that takes university sports codes and street art for a varsity update. Varsity Jackets, schoolgirl punk, modern tweed and xxxl checks bring a rebellious twist to this classic look.

Finally, Counter Culture follows the younger, more daring woman. A darker, more committed aesthetic shines through. Militant, underground, street, and experimental looks are seen here, with an emphasis on denim. The classic edge of varsity gets an edgy revamp with oversized Bomber Jackets and utility details. Colours here are dark metallics, deep navy’s, black vinyl’s contrasted with musical pastels like Symphony.

On the Inspiring Retail Stage, TrendBible’s Trend Editor Wendy Lowe explored The Future of Celebration in 2023 and 2023 Home and Lifestyle Trends.

The Future of Celebration featured Recover Together, an honest, cheerful, naïve, nostalgic, and anti-perfectionist trend. While the mood is focused on rebuilding, repair, collective grief and strength in sensitivity, the colour palette is bold, colourful and inviting, celebrating progress over perfection and encouraging lovingly handmade gifts and a thrown-together look. Deborah Mordain, Trend Researcher quoted: “If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that life is messy and unpredictable. We have learnt to embrace the imperfect, find joy in everyday moments and celebrate the little wins. This is a great opportunity for brands to expand their celebration & gifting strategies beyond ‘special dates,’ using brave and honest messaging to inspire their audience to go big on the small things.”

Surreal Sense trend delivers a psychedelic disco, surreal nature, higher self-energy, and fields escapism. Liv Taylor, Visual Strategist and Cultural Researcher inputted: “Sensory saturated and psychedelic spaces create modern day escapism. Blending a love for nature with futuristic aspirations, brands can invite customers to lose themselves in the moment – whether at a big blow-out party or in an intimate self-care session. Heightening flavour and scent, offering a personalised experience, and using unexpected textures and colours will leave customers with something they’ll never forget.”

During the 2023 Home and Lifestyle Trends, Wendy outlined a key trend called Radical Natural, incorporating Resilient food systems, Outdoor hobbyists, Green cities, Healing nature and Sustainable inclusion. Ollie Olanipekun of Flock Together explains this trend as “Nature is a universal resource. For too long black, brown and POC have felt unwelcome and marginalised in spaces that should be for everyone. Together we are reclaiming green spaces and rebuilding our relationship with nature - one walk at a time.”

The Future Eden trend looks at Urban resilience, Functional resistant & durable Utilitarian, and Pet friendly Eco-conscious. Driving the trend is the move to remote working, a democratisation of nature, and ultra-localism with a colour palette of greens, yellow, blue and soft earthy browns. Naomi Pollard, Head of Publishing TrendBible refers to the trend; “Future Eden combines the best of tech-friendly, urban lifestyles with the benefits of tending to the natural world. This trend speaks to the rising number of eco-conscious consumers, that expect sustainable products and circular design without compromising on a fresh outlook.”

Looking further ahead to 2024, Wendy presented the Modern Renaissance trend, offering Still-life like classics rebirthed, sculptural, sensual, refined, and monumental aesthetics.  Pollard explains; “Modern Renaissance echoes the rebirth of culture and the arts. As a contemporary ode to classic design and historical masterpieces – reinvented with modern form, styling and narrative – this trend story combines the best of timeless and timely chic.”

A cultural reawakening emerges, representative of the bloom that follows a fallow period. The spirit and design style of the Renaissance cascade through visual language and product design, where classic forms find a new audience and a still-life aesthetic emerges. A new wave of artists and muses become interesting to this curious consumer. Beauty is redefined for the modern age as a new appetite for more varied definitions drives a movement for skinclusivity.

Osprey Charging secures partnership with British Garden Centres

Osprey Charging, one of the UK’s leading networks of rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging points, has been selected by British Garden Centres, the UK’s largest family-owned garden centre group to provide rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging at its UK stores.

Osprey’s rapid chargers can add 100 miles in range to an EV in 20-30min, fitting the garden centre dwell time perfectly and allowing customers to enjoy their re-charge time in a relaxing and comfortable environment.

The British Garden Centre in Carmarthen, Wales, will be the first to offer an Osprey rapid charge to its customers, at a hub with 8 ultra-rapid (150kW) chargers opening later this year. The Carmarthen hub will be followed by high-power hubs planned in Wimborne (Dorset), Carr Gate (Yorkshire), Braintree (Essex) and Harrow (London). A total of 11 further sites are confirmed with a mix of these larger hubs and some smaller installations depending on the size of the site and availability of power.

A family-owned and -run operation for over 40 years, British Garden Centres is reviewing its entire estate with the aim of bringing Osprey’s charging technology to all of its centres across the UK over the next few years.

Last month Osprey committed to delivering accessible and safe charging when it became the first charging network to subscribe to independent public EV charging endorsement body ChargeSafe, to inspect and rate its sites - this pledge will ensure the charging facilities at each British Garden Centre are as accessible as possible in the space available.

Ian Johnston, CEO of Osprey Charging said: “The British Garden Centres name is synonymous with first-class customer experience, and we’re delighted to provide safe, reliable, and accessible charging at their UK stores.  We look forward to a fruitful partnership as we work together to offer EV charging at more of its centres up and down the country.”

Amy Stubbs, daughter of the founder, from British Garden Centres said: “We work hard to provide our customers with expert gardening knowledge, great value, the industry’s best gardening products and the highest quality of food in our restaurants. Partnering with Osprey allows us to build upon this further by letting our growing number of EV driving customers charge their vehicles at a time and location that is convenient for them, whilst they visit our stores.”

STV announce partnership with Greenfingers

STV have recently announced a new charity partnership with Greenfingers that will see them commit to raising £10,000 over the next 3 years...

STV have recently announced a new charity partnership with Greenfingers that will see them commit to raising £10,000 over the next 3 years.

Children’s hospices provide crucial care and support to thousands of families with seriously ill children across the UK and much of the hospice fundraising goes towards providing equipment and the vital care which goes on inside the hospice, leaving little funding for their outside spaces. Greenfingers Charity works to create magical gardens for life-limited children and their families who spend time in hospices across the UK. They believe that time spent outdoors, away from the bedside, can offer children and families under considerable stress a vital opportunity to embrace the benefits of being in the fresh air and engaging with the natural environment.

Katy Boyd, Brand Manager said, “We are very excited to be partnering with Greenfingers as one of their Silver Sponsors. All employees will have an opportunity to take part in the activities and fund-raising efforts, and we will be inviting everyone to come up with ideas and creative ways of raising money. On top of that, the company has generously agreed to match fund every penny we raise so we hope to be able to exceed our £10,000 target!”

On behalf of Greenfingers Charity, Director of Fundraising & Communications, Linda Petrons said: “STV International have been great supporters for many years. We’re delighted to formalise a partnership as we head towards our 25th Anniversary and are very much looking forward to working with the team as they support the charity over the next three years.”

So far, the STV team have planned fancy dress days, a bake sale, a sponsored walk along the local Peddars Way and the wearing of green for Greenfingers with lots more ideas in the pipeline.

ClipGlove launch recycled Bottle Gloves

Treadstone are continuing their sustainability drive by launching a new glove range for their ClipGlove brand that is made using recycled plastic bottles. This on trend sustainable glove comes at an exciting time for Treadstone, who have developed several innovative products in the last two years.

ClipGlove is a brand that was launched by Treadstone in 2019 and the range has continued to grow since then. The range’s foundations are built on innovation as well as functionality, with each pair of gloves being held together with a carabiner clip. This clip enables gardeners to fasten the gloves onto a convenient place during and after use. This leads to a reduction in users losing their gloves, as well as making gardening tasks more efficient.

A handy sustainable option

The new multi-purpose recycled glove range features a stylish collection of Men’s and Ladies’ gloves made using recycled plastic bottles! The knitted glove is made from 95% recycled plastic bottles, with just a little added elastic for comfort. The Glove is then dipped in natural latex to provide grip and protection from dirt and water. The fun, colourful printed designs add a touch of style whilst giving a nod to the “bottle heritage” of the gloves.

There are two versions available in the Bottle Glove range and both gloves are suitable for general garden jobs such as weeding, sowing, potting, and planting.

The Standard Bottle Glove features a textured palm coating of natural latex to provide grip and protection. Bottle Glove Plus is made from the same construction as the Bottle Glove, but with an extra coating of latex, which stretches up the back of the hand to provide increased durability and protection against moisture. The Plus offers a more hardwearing option for more intense gardening tasks such as landscaping. Common to both gloves is the famous carabiner clip which keeps the gloves close and in sight.

Synonymous to Treadstone Products retail focus, there is a merchandising stand to site the gloves on the shop floor for Garden Centres to take advantage of. This merchandiser reinforces the eco messages and leads on from the award winning ClipGlove Spinner Stand which is now stocked in hundreds of stockists around the UK.

A greener ClipGlove

The sustainable Bottle Gloves come at a time when the ClipGlove range itself is becoming more environmentally friendly. This is because from 2023, the glove production will use an average of 30% recycled content, using materials in production that would normally go to waste.

ClipGlove is a brand that continues to innovate and now offers gloves for environmentally conscious gardeners. If you are interested in stocking ClipGlove Bottle Gloves, DARE TO SELL DIFFERENT and get in touch today, email sales@treadstoneproducts.com.
