Sales of cyclamen, mainly mini cyclamen, grew by 50% last week according to the EPoS data supplied to GTN Bestsellers by garden centres across the UK. That means they hold the title of No 1 bestselling plant for the second week running.
Dianthus and Pansy sales also increased week on week to move up to Nos 2 and 3 respectively while Pelargonium sales are defiantly on the wane as they drop to No 6.
The biggest sales increases in this week’s chart go to Asters, up by 154%, Gentiana, up by 148%, and Platycodon (Chinese balloon flower) up by 138%.
With heathers coming into flower it’s no surprise to see both genus Ericacea and Calluna move up in sales. Ericacea heathers move up 9 places to No 13 while Calluna heathers come into our Top 50 for the first time at No 33.

Garden Decoration boosts product sales in garden centres
Garden Decoration, led by garden lighting, is fast becoming the leading area for garden product sales with 42% of the GTN Bestsellers Top 50 Garden Products going to garden lighting lines. That’s almost double for the same week last year...
Garden Decoration, led by garden lighting, is fast becoming the leading area for garden product sales with 42% of the GTN Bestsellers Top 50 Garden Products going to garden lighting lines. That’s almost double for the same week last year.
So how big will garden decoration be at Glee next month? We know of several companies that have significant launches of new products for the show, many of which may become bestsellers next year.
Paris Natar, Chairman of Smart Garden Products, whose Eureka! Light Bulbs are No 1 again this week, told GTN Bestsellers: “If you want to look at trends, there does seem to be a shift away from core gardening to instant and decorative gardening. People are happy to add artificial items to their real plants.”
Jonathan Stobart, Managing Director at Smart Garden Products, added: “We’ve got some extensions in our décor category and new designs of the solar light flowers that maximise on the fusion of solar lighting and garden decoration.”
After the Christmas decoration season garden centres sit down and plan their ranges and displays for the following Christmas, so we wonder how many garden centres will this year be visiting Glee having already thought about their ‘Garden Decoration’ displays for 2017?
And will those thoughts and plans spread across garden furniture and plants? You wouldn’t plan your Christmas areas without special plans for poinsettia and live trees as key parts of Christmas decoration, so how about taking the same approach for spring and summer garden decoration?
GTN Bestsellers Top 50 sales volumes compared to the same week last year...
- Garden Products - down 5%
- Veg-2-Gro - up 4%
- Growing Media - down 1%
- All Items Index - down 10%

After 14 successful years Planters Garden Centre manager Stuart Gooden is looking to take it slightly easier and moving to the South West. Owners Gerald and Christine Ingram (pictured) have now started the search for his replacement.
During Stuart's time as centre manager, Planters (Tamworth) have doubled turnover to £5m, invested over £3m in the 20 acre site including £1.6m in a state of the art restaurant, created a tourist attraction with “SkyTrail” and built a pet centre (including dog grooming) to just short of 10% of turnover as are Christmas decoration sales.
Regular members of the GCA Centres of Excellence list and in the last 5 years been Garden Centre of the Year.
The search begins to find a new General Manager, hungry for success and ready to contribute to a 10 year plan, which will put Planters (Tamworth) into the top 10 centres for turnover (and profitability) in the UK.
Planters are looking for someone who wants to build their career, not looking to slow down. The ideal candidate will have worked in a large £5m+ destination centre and have a proven track record of building sales (and profitability).

The two winners (GC and DGC) will be announced and presented with their trophies at the annual GCA Conference which is being held in St. Andrews, from January 22 until 25, 2017.

Colin Squire awarded honorary degree by Kingston

Colin Squire, Chairman of award-winning family business Squire’s Garden Centres, has been named Honorary Doctor of Art & Design by Kingston University.
A former student of Kingston University, Colin was given this honour in recognition of his outstanding contribution to horticulture and the local community.
Mr. Squire studied architecture at the University’s predecessor, the Kingston School of Art, in the 1950s before leaving to work full time in the family business with his father.
Squire’s Garden Centres was founded by D.J. Squire in 1936 as a landscaping and nursery business, but it was his son Colin who established the first garden centre in Twickenham in 1964.
Under his entrepreneurial leadership, the company has grown to become one of the South East’s most established and well-known garden businesses, and was named best plant retailer in the UK last year. Continuing the family tradition, Colin Squire’s daughter, Sarah, is the company’s Deputy Chairman.
There are now 15 Squire’s Garden Centres across Surrey, Middlesex, Berkshire and West Sussex, employing more than 700 local people, and this year the company is celebrating 80 years in the horticultural industry.
Over this period, Colin Squire – who also celebrates his 80th birthday this month – has served on the board of trustees of a number of local organisations and charities, supported many local ‘In Bloom’ initiatives and been involved in all 26 RHS Hampton Court Flower Shows.
On receiving his award Colin Squire commented “Being honoured by the institution where I studied more than 55 years ago was a particularly moving experience. I am very humbled and also very proud to be given this honorary doctorate.”
Colin also offered some advice for University graduates embarking on their careers; “Success, even in uncertain times, can be achieved with commitment, perseverance and hard work,” he said. “Maintain high ethical standards, never forgetting that we should try – in whatever field we work in – to give back to society help where it is needed.”
Kingston University's Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law Ron Tuninga, who presented the award, said the honorary doctorate reflected both Colin Squire’s extensive horticultural expertise and his tireless charity work.
“Colin Squire is an example of how an entrepreneurial spirit can reap benefits for the wider community,” he said. “He has successfully expanded his business while remaining true to its family-run traditions and is a tireless advocate of local charities and organisations, including Kingston University. We are very fortunate to be able to acknowledge Colin’s outstanding contribution to both with this award.”

The Ball Colegrave Annual Summer Showcase is one of the UK’s premier trade events. With more than four acres of seasonal plant displays and variety trials, set in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside, the event attracts an audience of more than 3,000 growers, independent and multiple retailers, parks and landscapers, garden writers, plant breeders, trades associations, students and home gardeners. This year saw a record number of visitors attend, each voting for their favourite varieties and colour schemes using a blue marker flag. With over 1300 catalogue varieties, 300 new varieties and 700 experimental products on display, there was certainly plenty to choose from! However, the products which received the most flags once again leaned heavily towards new plant varieties and novelties, suggesting the market continues to hunger for innovative new plant products as growers and retailers look to stay one step ahead of the trend. The winning varieties as voted for by 3,000 visitors: 1.Petunia NightSky® New to the garden market this season, it has proved such a retail success that it has moved up the results table for blue flags from last year’s third place position to overall blue flag winner this year. Petunia NightSky really shines in baskets and containers with the white spots on dark violet flowers looking like an ever-changing constellation in the night sky. It’s easy to see why this variety was shortlisted in May for the RHS Chelsea Show ‘Plant of the Year’ awards and has received numerous industry awards since its launch. This is simply an extraordinary breakthrough colour pattern. An absolute first for Petunia and a rising star in UK garden centres. 2.Grandaisy® Pink Halo is the latest in interspecific plant breeding, carrying super large 6cm diameter pink flowers with a striking rose-pink ring around the eye. This cutting-raised Argyranthemum is a strong, disease-free performer which blooms early, is cold and heat tolerant and therefore thrives in most climates. Plants are very free-branching and strong, making mounded bushy plants that flower abundantly throughout the Summer. Grandaisy® grows to about 45-60cm height and spread and looks spectacular as a patio plant, in balcony boxes and as a bedding plant. The plants take little care and is bound to become a consumer favourite. Pink Halo is just one of 4 striking colours in the new Grandaisy® series, which includes White, Red and Bright Yellow.
3. Calla Lily Callafornia Red. The introduction of the Callafornia range of Calla Lily last year created enormous interest with visitors, receiving three out of the top 10 blue flags. This year suggests the interest for this product has not changed with four Calla Lily in the top 10 favourite varieties. Why? Calla Lilies (Zantedeschia hybrids) are incredibly quick and easy to grow, trouble free and with their exotic flowers have enormous retail appeal and should command a premium price. Their garden performance is outstanding, having demonstrated in Ball Colegrave’s three years of plant trials they can tolerate a wide range of summer weather conditions, delivering great garden success for the home gardener. Plants will flower from June to September. Callafornia Red was the top voted Calla Lily. Flowers open pink to red and deepen to a true red.

Celebrity gardener Chris Collins will be on hand for three days at CarFest South from 26th to 28th August 2016, giving free advice on how to make the most of your outside space – whether it is a balcony, roof terrace, patio or even just a windowsill.
Chris is the ambassador for the ‘Love the Plot You’ve Got’ campaign aimed at getting non-gardeners aged between 30 and 45 years old thinking about their outside space differently, and he will be brimming with inspirational tips and advice to CarFest goers.
This year the inspiring Love the Plot You’ve Got Roadshow gardens have been designed by Chris, supported by Association of Professional Landscapers with further products being supplied by Pile Height, Mr. Fothergill’s, Scott’s Miracle-Gro and EcoScape. All plants will be supplied by multiple show medal winners Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants and props will be supplied by Henry Street Garden Centre.
Keith Nicholson, Marketing Director of Westland Horticulture and Chair of the Garden Industry Marketing Board said: “CarFest is a fantastic event and we had such a positive response from visitors at the North event that we knew we definitely had to do South as well. We will be building a fantastic garden showing people how they can do exciting things in their outside spaces, no matter the size or shape, with minimal effort and cost."
Celebrity Gardener Chris Collins said: “CarFest is a celebration of being outside and outside life and it’s great that we are here for the first time! We will be showing people that gardening isn’t a secret club you need to join to get into it - it’s actually very easy to do, and will be showing some simple tips and tricks with our hands-on demonstrations for both kids and grown-ups."
The team will be at stand C65 in the lifestyle area close to the demo zone on the track. There will be lots of different gardening ideas on display to demonstrate how people can maximise their space be it an area for the kids, an area to encourage wildlife or a little haven of relaxation. People visiting the stand will also be in with a chance to win a hamper packed full of Miracle-Gro products to improve their own outdoors area.
The roadshows are part of the innovative three-year Love the Plot You’ve Got Campaign which has been created following detailed research into consumer perceptions about their desires for their outdoor living spaces, especially among the key 30-45-year-old age group. Highlights of the 2016 campaign have involved RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May, Al Fresco Fortnight in June and a comprehensive social media programme.

RHS underlines commitment to UK manufacturing
Success at retail for partnerships with award-winning garden product suppliers
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has underlined its commitment to UK manufacturing and materials in the gardening sector with the successful launch at retail of products resulting from three new partnerships with award-winning companies – Melcourt, Kelkay and Trimetals...
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has underlined its commitment to UK manufacturing and materials in the gardening sector with the successful launch at retail of products resulting from three new partnerships with award-winning companies. They are: Melcourt, with a licensed range of peat-free compost and mulch; Kelkay, with RHS-endorsed horticultural grit, gravel and sand; and Trimetals, with RHS-endorsed metal sheds and storage boxes.
Melcourt, the UK’s leading supplier of mulches, growing media, soil improvers, biofiltration media and more — all based on bark, wood and other natural materials — has brought to retail an RHS-licensed range of professional-quality garden products, supplied in distinctive packaging. The range includes peat-free composts, topsoil and lawn dressing, soil conditioners, premium-quality bark mulches, garden and landscape mulches and natural play surfaces.
An important driver of this agreement is that Melcourt products are 100 per cent peat-free at a time when environmentally aware gardeners and government are both supporting a reduction in the use of peat in UK horticulture. Melcourt has taken many years of research and trials to help formulate and demonstrate quality products that are also peat-free. Its peat-free products have won awards at the GLEE garden and outdoor living trades show and best buy nominations from Which? Gardening magazine.
Launched at GLEE held last September at the NEC, Birmingham, the range is now available at garden centres and retail nurseries across the UK and online through many Melcourt stockists.
Another award-winning RHS partner is Trimetals, which designs and manufactures — in the UK — the highest-specification metal garden storage buildings available. Perfect for the discerning gardener who requires a secure, lockable and robust solution to tool and equipment storage, the products are also completely maintenance-free and are manufactured from a special PVC-coated galvanised steel which is guaranteed against corrosion for 25 years. Trimetals products have met with considerable success abroad. The company has also won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
Trimetals RHS-endorsed products are available to view and purchase at more than 40 outlets nationwide, through most major DIY retailers and direct via the company’s own website.
Kelkay is a market leader and trusted brand in the manufacturing and distribution of aggregates, paving and fountains. Its RHS Gardeners Collection of grits and sands was launched at GLEE in September last year and came to market early in 2016.
Kelkay’s RHS Gardeners Collection is the only range of grits and sands endorsed by the Royal Horticulture Society. It can improve drainage and aeration, support aquatic planting and enhance rockery and alpine gardens. It can also be mixed with composts for seed planting. It picked up the first runner-up prize in the Best Landscaping & Construction category of the GLEE New Products Awards 2015. The RHS Gardeners Collection is sold in all garden centres and multiples.
Cathy Snow, RHS Licensing Manager, says: “These RHS licensees and endorsements clearly illustrate both the strength of British manufacturing and materials in the garden sector and the continuing appeal of an RHS partnership to a fast-growing number of the best-known players in this sector.”

A York-based construction company has won a contract to transform Dean’s Garden Centre in Stockton-on-the-Forest in a £1 million refurbishment project.
The work will bring the facilities up to date and in line with the latest retail space design trends.
Evora Construction will transform the current building using a combination of masonry, steelwork and glulam timber structures, complete with a specialist zinc roof covering and aluminium windows and doors in order to make it light, bright and modern.
Set for completion in March next year, the refurbishment and extension is the third phase of a long-term development plan for the family-run centre.
Evora director Mark Reynolds said: “Dean’s Garden Centre is a hub of the community, so we feel extremely privileged to be the ones making a mark in the history of the centre.
“Loved by both locals and occasional visitors, the centre will be completely transformed to offer something new for its loyal customers, while maintaining the traditional atmosphere and values that make it so successful.”
The refurbishment and extension of the centre will bring forward a new focal point, with the creation of a state-of-the-art coffee shop and kitchen facility, as well as a total remodelling of the toilet and back-of-house facilities to increase its capacity and meet demand.
Opened in 1968, the centre has been serving local gardeners for more than 47 years.
Richard Dean, from Dean’s Garden Centre, said: “We are really looking forward to the refurbishment. It’s somewhat long-due, but we know that this refurbishment will future-proof the centre and leave it looking and feeling fresh for years to come.
“We chose Evora due to their history of providing a fantastic service to businesses in this area. We have seen first-hand their dedication and attention to detail, so knew that they were the right choice for us when it came to turning our vision into reality.”
The project has been carefully planned in order to minimise disruption to customers. Remaining open throughout the entire refurbishment, the centre will continue to offer the same service to its customers.
The project is designed and project-managed by York architects Walker Nicholas, supported by WT Partnership cost consultants, Dossor MCA structural engineers, Preston Barber services consultants and Eurosafe safety consultants. People can follow the progress of the project on social media using/twitter.com/evora09

East Midlands-based manufacturer and importer, Charles Bentley & Son, is expanding its operation with the launch of a dropship service, enabling retailers to easily expand their online home, garden and leisure product ranges without major upfront investment.
The company has chosen garden trade event Glee at NEC Birmingham to unveil the new service, which will be based at its 202,000 sq ft warehouse in Loughborough and will allow retailers to use Charles Bentley & Son as a fulfilment centre.
Charles Bentley & Son will effectively stock, pack and dispatch products directly to customers on behalf of retailers who are looking to explore new product lines.
The move means that other businesses will be able to echo the success of Charles Bentley & Son’s ecommerce operation, BuyDirect4U, which has reached a £10 million annual turnover after launching in 2005.
The company has used dropship to develop its own catalogue, which now includes 1,500 products and has increased the average number of visitors to its website to 100,000 per month.
Charles Bentley, Managing Director, comments: “We have trialled our new dropship operation with two major British omni-channel retailers, and following its success we are now rolling this out nationally by offering independent retailers and garden centres access to our expanding product portfolio of Charles Bentley branded products.
“The major benefit this fulfilment strategy offers to retailers is that it minimises risk and cost; they do not have to invest in stock or the warehouse space to store it, which offers an avenue of expansion that does not require major investment. The new service will be available across a wide range of products, so retailers can use this to trial new product lines and as we pack, pick and ship on the retailer’s behalf they can also save time.
“We are really pleased with the success of this service so far and expect it to become popular with a range of retailers, particularly those that are looking for an easy way to sell online for first time.”
Approximately 1,500 products will be available through Charles Bentley & Son’s dropship service, covering garden and outdoor, home living, sport and leisure, DIY tools and hardware, toys and games and pets.
The new dropship service coincides with the launch of Charles Bentley & Son’s rebrand, which has given the 156-year-old company a fresh look as it prepares to further diversify and grow its services.
Charles Bentley & Son Ltd is a Loughborough business. Formed in 1860, the company is still owned by the original Bentley family and originally started out providing brushes for Victorian chimney sweepers. It is now a multi-million pound operation, with specialisms in the equestrian, cleaning and household sector.

The Garden Oven Company has created the ultimate in wood fired ovens with a new design that promises even better al fresco cooking on an even larger scale. Bang on trend and in high demand this summer, these environmentally-friendly British-made ovens create the 'smoked' and 'wood fire' taste that is all the rage for outdoor cooking in all seasons.
The Model 2 Garden Oven is bigger than the original Model 1 family sized Garden Oven, giving customers a choice of size. With a 50% larger baking area that can cook two pizzas at once and easily accommodates any AGA roasting pan, the Model 2 oven offers more space for the larger event or family gathering.
Jay Larson, who owns The Garden Oven Company says, ‘Our Model 1 oven is incredibly popular, but we've created the Model 2 Garden Oven that allows even more culinary options. The Model 2 has an additional layer of high insulation between bricks and the steel walls, and it holds even better for slow cooking. Just like the Model 1, we've incorporated an adjustable height baking shelf and rack for ease of use. The Model 2 is designed with "pub garden cooking" in mind.'
Both models of the Garden Oven have been designed in the UK to improve the outdoor living experience and has a whole host of uses. Jay adds, ‘The Garden Oven is intended for year-round cooking. With its multi function oven, chefs can cook, bake, grill, roast and smoke a wide range of dishes from pizza to fish, bread to Sunday roast! Unlike traditional brick ovens, the Garden Oven is transportable with no building work required.'
Designed by entrepreneur Jay, who hails from the States and who grew up with wood-fired outdoor cooking, he says his aim with the Garden Oven was to create something that can be used in any weather for year-round enjoyment. ‘Knowing how unpredictable the British weather is, this really is an oven for all seasons.
The Garden Oven is very efficient because it is lined with firebrick that stores the heat and insulates it so it stays warm and evenly heated long after the fire is out. Think BBQ and patio warmer!
‘To create the perfect, easy cooking experience, you simply light the fire in the bottom section and cook on top. You can use the mid-level baking surface for a two minute stone-baked pizza. For barbequing and smoking the stainless steel grill and rack are used and the sturdy stand lifts the oven up to a convenient height and serves as a wood store. Both Model 1 and Model 2 ovens are designed to face the elements and come with a heavy duty cover to keep the wood dry and the oven tidy.'
Jay, 52, lives in Hampshire and has been cooking outdoors in the UK for 23 years. With a background in engineering, he started up The Garden Oven Company in 2010. He sees the Garden Oven as creating a unique outdoor cooking experience. ‘The Garden Oven in Model 1 and Model 2 styles are special because of the design and they are conducive to all types of cooking. Smoking, baking, pizza, grilling, slow cooking… it does it all exceptionally well.'
Jay is also an advocate of wood fired cooking generally, saying: ‘Wood fired cooking just is better. By far, it was the first fuel used to cook with. And a wood fire gives great flavours. It is carbon neutral too. Greener, cleaner, and tastier all round!'
The Garden Oven was inspired by Jay's love of cooking. ‘I had really admired a friend's outdoor oven from France and I thought at once that here was a product that could really be improved upon and was not being sold in the UK. I researched the construction of outdoor ovens and came up with a design that I hoped would perform well and be attractive in a UK garden. The Garden Oven Model 1 and the Garden Oven Company was born. The Model 2 is an extension of the demands from our customer base who love outdoor cooking.'
Jay is keen for the Garden Oven to be made locally in the UK. He says: ‘Ultimately, I wanted the product to be locally made. I think that we move goods too much around the planet. Yet having the resources available to design and manufacture products locally can be critical. I'm fortunate to work with local companies which lower costs and ultimately create a better product. I now proudly place the ‘Made in Britain' badge on the ovens.'
The response to the Garden Oven's wood fired cooking has been phenomenal. Jays says: ‘Our foodie customers love the product and are always giving me great feedback and writing to me about what they have cooked in their ovens. I love to see the recipes people come up with.'

Rosemary Alexander and The English Gardening School look forward to welcoming gardeners of all levels to this year’s Garden Maker’s Day.
To be held at The Chelsea Physic Garden on Thursday, November 17, this is a rare and exciting opportunity to learn from the experts and a great pre–Christmas treat. A light lunch and refreshments are included.
This Year’s Speakers: Arne Maynard, Diarmuid Gavin and Julian & Isabel Bannerman
Arne Maynard’s unique garden design style responds to the surrounding landscape, using bold lines and an architectural framework to divide the space into separate areas. To counterbalance these formal lines he creates soft inner plantings of herbaceous plants and roses. In his own garden in Monmouthshire he has practised what he preaches, creating an unusual and delightful garden around the beautiful medieval tower house.
Often considered a slightly eccentric Irishman, Diarmuid Gavin is always a designer to challenge expectations. At times controversial, Diarmuid was responsible for the 2016 Harrods Eccentric British Garden. His past gardens at Chelsea have always provoked discussion and set new limits for unusual design features. He will share with us about what inspires his work, the critical and tense build up to Chelsea and also about his unique Chelsea Show gardens.
Julian and Isabel Bannerman have been designing gardens since 1983, using skilled craftsmen to build dramatic features, such as the Stumpery at Highgrove and the new Earl’s Garden at Arundel Castle. Their many commissions and awards show their passion for plants and gardens, both private and public and are described in their new book. On this lecture day they will share the reasoning behind their designs. Lots of inspirational ideas, glimpses of rarely open gardens and superb craftsmanship.

German firm acquires coffee roaster Matthew Algie

Matthew Algie, the UK’s leading independent coffee roaster, has been acquired by the family-owned German coffee and food service business Tchibo, in a deal which both parties have hailed as complementary to their respective brands and customers across the UK and Ireland.
For Tchibo, the deal illustrates the multinational’s desire to further grow its coffee service business in the UK. The senior management team of Tchibo cited a number of key attractions to Glasgow-based Matthew Algie; its dedication to ethical trading and ‘Triple Accreditation’, its leading-edge training operations and technical customer support; and the opportunity to grow Matthew Algie’s Espresso Warehouse brand, potentially across Europe.
Matthew Algie will continue to operate as a standalone entity but with the platform for further expansion and innovation, building on its impressive growth in recent years. The company employs 220 people and is now one of the UK’s leading suppliers to the UK and Ireland food service markets, recognised for its technical expertise, approach to sustainable coffee sourcing, and excellent customer service. In 2014 it celebrated its 150th anniversary.
The deal with Tchibo will see the Matthew Algie brand retained in the UK with the company continuing to be run by its existing management team. Tchibo will use the acquisition to expand its operations in the UK and Ireland.
The global coffee service business of Tchibo was founded in 1972 with the clear long term strategy to build an international coffee service business. This year Tchibo Coffee Service UK celebrates its 25th anniversary. It came to the UK in 1991 as part of an international growth programme. The operation currently includes a coffee food service offer to sectors such as forecourts, hotels and offices. Tchibo employs more than 150 people in the UK.
Matthew Algie has been family-owned throughout its history. Following the death of 6th generation owner David Williamson in 2008, the company has been owned by Mr Williamson’s estate which is held by a family trust.
Established in 1864 as a tea blender and wholesaler, Matthew Algie has driven innovation and ethical trading in the UK coffee market, including the introduction of the UK’s first Fairtrade espresso bean. In 2004 the firm launched the UK’s first Triple Certified espresso: Fairtrade, organic, and Rainforest Alliance.
Beyond coffee roasting, the acquisition will allow Matthew Algie to grow its Espresso Warehouse brand which sells associated products and equipment to cafes, restaurants and hotels.
Concluding the acquisition, Nick Snow, Managing Director for Tchibo Coffee Service, said: “Matthew Algie stands out in the UK coffee trade for its unrivalled “farm-to-cup” approach to ethical sourcing, its technical excellence with dedication to staff and customer training, and the opportunity to grow the Espresso Warehouse concept internationally.
“We are very keen to maintain Matthew Algie’s independence while providing it with the opportunity to drive innovation in the UK coffee service market. We will learn a lot from each other while both continuing to grow.”
Matthew Algie’s senior management team, including CEO Gary Nicol, sales and marketing director Brian O’Hagan, operations director Peter McGadey and technical director Ewan Reid, will continue to lead the expanding operation.
Chairman Eric Hagman CBE said: “We believe this deal gives the company a major platform for further growth and to expand Matthew Algie’s operations across the UK with an eye on European markets also. Tchibo is the right partner to help us build on the achievements of the last few years and we are very excited about the future potential of the business.”
Gary Nicol, Matthew Algie chief executive, said the future was positive for the company: “We have always worked hard to deliver consistently high quality products and that won’t change going forward. The investment of Tchibo also speaks volumes for the results achieved by our skilled and committed workforce.
“Our focus remains on our dedication to sustainable sourcing and great tasting coffee for our customers, but now with the complementary experience, products and services and routes to market offered by new partners Tchibo.”

Visitors to an Usk garden centre were surprised when they bumped into a special group of cyclists during their training preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Morris’s Garden Centre in Usk was host to members of Team GB’s cycling team earlier this month, as the team prepared for the ongoing Olympic Games.
The cyclists, who were staying at the Celtic Manor in Newport, dropped in to the garden centre for tea and cake a number of times before the games, which have proved a success for the team. Garden centre manager Kate Morris said the team came in on three or four separate occasions.
“I couldn’t believe it”, she added.
The cyclists – Sir Bradley Wiggins, Steven Burke, Ed Clancy and Owain Doull – went on to take victory in the team pursuit, while Mark Cavendish secured silver in the omnium.

The best of Yorkshire produce will take centre stage as Tong Garden Centre in Bradford prepares to host a tasting event to round off the summer.
The garden centre will hold its first ‘Taste' celebration of food and drink over the weekend of September 17 and 18 at its Tong Lane site.
Organisers at the garden centre have planned the event to coincide with the start of British Food Fortnight, the annual, national celebration of British food and drink.
"We're really looking forward to hosting our first ‘Taste' food and drink celebration and showcasing some of the best producers in Yorkshire to our visitors," said Jo Dales, marketing manager at Tong Garden Centre.
Many of Tong's 100 plus Yorkshire suppliers will be setting up tasting stands for people to sample their products. There will be everything from baked goods from Malton's Julyan The Baker and preserves from Holmfirth-based Peckish Kitchen to Wold Top Brewery's award winning ales and Yorkshire Drizzle's flavoured oils for visitors to try.
Jo added: "Whether it's sampling great food, entertaining the kids at Grass Hoppers Adventure Playground, or a spot of retail therapy, there will be something for everyone throughout the weekend. There will also be plenty of opportunities to taste the best of British food and drink in Grass Hoppers, the Coffee Shop and the Orchard Kitchen."
British Food Fortnight is a national celebration that has taken place every year since 2002.
It first began as a response to the foot and mouth crisis that hit the British farming industry and aims to encourage consumers to actively seek out British food.
Tong Garden Centre is one of Yorkshire's biggest independent garden centres with 110,000 square feet of retail space and parking for up to 1,000 cars.
