Wellingborough Garden Centrre sold to industry newcomers

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co, has completed the sale of Wellingborough Garden Centre in Great Doddington, Northamptonshire to the Howard Family.

Albeit newcomers to the garden centre industry the family already operates successful construction, plant hire and building repairs businesses and hopes their wealth of experience in horticulture and landscaping will translate quickly into continued success at the soon-to-be-rebranded garden centre.

This large, established plant and garden centre sits on a prime 3.49-acre site just off the A45. The site was sold by Christie & Co on behalf of Wyevale back in 2018, so it is one of the first former Wyevale sites that Christie & Co’s specialist garden centre retail team have sold for a second time.

Tom Glanvill, Director – Garden Centres & Retail at Christie & Co, who brokered the deal, comments, “The sale of Wellingborough Garden Centre reinforces the appetite for the garden centre sector, with a diverse range of purchasers, many who are not currently operating a garden centre, keen to enter the market.

“During the marketing process, we received a wide range of interest and offers from seven potential purchasers, and we are delighted to see the Howard family secure the business. The site offers huge scope for growth and having spoken to the family about their plans, I am sure that the reopening of the café and other improvements will bring this garden centre back to its full potential.”

The Howard family comment, “ We are extremely excited in our acquisition of the garden centre and the possibilities for development that come with it.

“We’ve visited the garden centre for many years and know the strong reputation for customer service and customer satisfaction that the team remaining in place have worked so hard to maintain. Our immediate efforts to refurbish and re-open the cafe sit central to our plan to increase our offerings to those within Doddington Village, and the wider Wellingborough area.

“We want the already successful business to continue to grow, whilst installing a community feel at the heart of the way we run the business. We will rebrand to reflect this, trading as Doddington Nurseries for the foreseeable future.”

Glee owner says Connect programme will not take place in 2024

Hyve Group, owner of Spring and Autumn Fair and Glee, has announced that its connections programme Connect will not be running in 2024, while the business collaborates with the industry and key partners to create better shows and experiences for the future...

Hyve Group, owner of Spring and Autumn Fair and Glee, has announced that its connections programme Connect will not be running in 2024, while the business collaborates with the industry and key partners to create better shows and experiences for the future.

Nicola Meadows, Divisional Managing Director, Hyve Group says, “I would like to thank our exhibitors for reaching out to us with their candid feedback on this year's Autumn Fair. As a business, our purpose is to help our customers to succeed by helping them meet with new and existing buyers. We understand better than most that face to face is the best way to make meaningful business connections, discover new products, and build relationships in the world of retail. We don’t take our responsibility - to help this community thrive - lightly. We know how important these shows are to the sector, much of which is made up of independent businesses which are the pride of the nation.

"I recognise that, during what are increasingly challenging times for everyone in retail, the introduction of Connect did not add value in the way we expected it to. Whilst for most the Autumn Fair was successful and produced great outcomes, it is clear that Connect became a distraction and cause of disruption. Up to now, our shows have been highly reliant on an analogue format which has remained the same for decades. We introduced Connect with the aim of improving how buyers and sellers do business at our events in a way which makes the most of time and resources. We hold our hands up that we fell short on executing this at Autumn Fair. For that reason, we will not be running Connect in 2024 at Spring Fair, Autumn Fair or Glee.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers again for their patience during this time and the continued support of these historic shows. We have listened to what they have to say, and we care about getting this right.”

Looking ahead, Meadows says there is an opportunity to provide the industry with a considerably better show which delivers increased return on investment through the smart use of data and technology. Committed to innovating and finding ways to improve the show while making an increased effort to keep exhibitors and visitors at the heart of its decision making, they have announced the introduction of working groups to help shape the future of the shows. Exhibitors and buyers are invited to get involved to share their views and opinions by emailing SpringAutumnFairMarketing@hyve.group.

Focusing on the future of their retail portfolio beyond 2024, Spring and Autumn Fair and Glee are committed to creating meaningful experiences and on delivering quality buyers to the shows.

Exhibitors have been contacted with full details on the adjustments to fees and contract details relating to both Spring and Autumn Fair 2024.

Footfall strong but spend down as Autumn season begins

The Horticultural Trades Association’s August Market Update highlights the industry's resilience in plant sales, but customers have been reducing their spending on higher-value items...

The Horticultural Trades Association’s August Market Update highlights the industry's resilience in plant sales, but customers have been reducing their spending on higher-value items.

While the garden retail sector continues to see people buying more plants, they are generally of lower value in their baskets, putting pressure on a sector that is already facing significant concern over rising costs, economic fluctuation, workforce shortages, unpredictable and challenging weather patterns and wavering consumer confidence.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA, commented: "Once again, August's results underscore the resilience of our industry amidst the ever-shifting landscape of 2023. Garden centre sales overall grew by +3% compared to August 2022, and the number of transactions also grew by +8%, suggesting strong footfall levels, with robust growth in categories like bulbs, bedding, and hardy plants, showing that our plants continue to thrive and capture hearts within a nation of gardeners. However, we hear directly from the sector that concerns remain over unsold stock and continued economic uncertainty. Notably, garden furniture saw steeper discounts as retailers sought to clear excess stock with fewer dry days to tempt people outdoors. The sales were down by -42% last year and contributed to 8% of total sales for August, compared to 14% in August 2022. COVID also pulled forward the product replacement cycle for these items, and the poorer summer 2023 weather likely contributed to the lower average basket value.”

August’s Consumer Confidence Index recovered +5 points, showing consumers have more positivity for their future financial outlook. However, as consumers grapple with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, they've become savvier shoppers, seeking savings amid rising expenses.

The constant success story of 2023 has been the non-garden/gardening categories, witnessing a +14% growth in August compared to the prior year. This vibrant activity extends to garden centre cafes and restaurants, where transaction numbers in catering spiked by +17%.

The report also sheds light on inflation rates within the industry. Over the 12 months leading up to August 2023, noticeable inflation rates were observed in various product categories, driven by escalating input and ingredient costs.

The report serves as an indispensable tool for HTA members, offering insights into their positioning within the membership and identifying areas of resilience, challenges, and opportunities.

The full report is available to HTA members on the association's website.

Budding retail experts secure roles at Dobbies Antrim

Dobbies is growing its line-up of retail experts in Northern Ireland through a new partnership with Workforce, and Antrim and Newtonabbey Council...

Dobbies is growing its line-up of retail experts in Northern Ireland through a new partnership with Workforce, and Antrim and Newtonabbey Council.

The news comes ahead of the opening of Dobbies new 110,000 sq ft store at The Junction on 5 October 2023 which will be the biggest in its UK-wide portfolio and home to a 120-strong team of full and part-time team members.

To assist with the recruitment process, Dobbies, alongside Workforce and Antrim and Newtonabbey Council, have developed two one-week employment academies. The academy consists of training in customer service, employability, first aid and personal development and equips participants with the skills and confidence to successfully secure a new role.

So far, 12 participants of the academy have secured roles in the new Antrim store. Positions include roles across customer services, operations, the warehouse and the restaurant.

Daniel Connell, from the Antrim area will be joining the horticulture team ahead of the opening in October. He said: “I really enjoyed the Workforce academies as I got the opportunity to magnify the skills I already have and also learn more, particularly in the customer service field. Having been in the motor industry for 30-years, I’m really excited about this new challenge and look forward to working at the new Dobbies in Antrim to support customers and showcase everything I learned.”

Paul Green, Head of People Experience, at Dobbies, said: “We are proud to be working with Workforce and the local council on this important initiative as part of our recruitment drive for the new Antrim store. Inspiring the next generation of retail experts is important to Dobbies, creating opportunities in the communities in which we operate is central to our success.”

Workforce Training Services is located in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and aims to create opportunities for young people in fields such as transport, construction, hospitality and retail.

Chris Ward, Corporate Services Manager at Workforce Training Services, added: “Our aim at Workforce is to give citizens of the borough a chance to go in to employment, especially when the traditional route has resulted in failure before. Our academies give people the confidence to implement new skills and create meaningful friendships. We wanted to thank Dobbies and Antrim and Newtownabbey Council for being open to working with us and giving the citizens of the borough a chance to show their potential.”

Dobbies Antrim store will open on Thursday 5 October at 10:00.

Figures show ‘excellent month’ at GCA garden centres

The Garden Centre Association’s August Barometer of Trade figures have revealed an ‘excellent month’ with members seeing an uplift in 11 of the 13 categories recorded by the organisation...

The Garden Centre Association’s August Barometer of Trade figures have revealed an ‘excellent month’ with members seeing an uplift in 11 of the 13 categories recorded by the organisation.

Out this week, the BoT also highlighted a positive year-to-date variance of +1.13% for member garden centres.

Peter Burks (above), GCA Chief Executive, explains: “August was an excellent month with all categories being up, except two, producing a very encouraging result overall. Plants, seeds and bulbs all performed well, suggesting our customers were taking advantage of the cool and damp conditions to keep planting; with large, strong, early displays of autumn colour helping.

“To add to this, the benefits of having a broad retail offering came into play on those wetter days. All departments showed improvement over last year, except for a small decline in garden sundries, and the problems in furniture and BBQ sales remain ongoing. Restaurants remain buoyant and continued their strong year with another big increase.”

According to the BoT results, furniture and BBQ sales were at -40.8%.

The best category in August was seeds & bulbs at +26.45%; followed by clothing at +20.84% and outdoor plants at +18.59%. Catering recorded +17.53% for the month.

The food hall/farm shop category was up +12.54%, pets & aquatics jumped by +8.62% and gifts by +6.07% when compared to August 2022.

Houseplants came in at +3.42%, hard landscaping was up +2.45% and garden sundries down to -1.26%.

The GCA BoT reports are compiled using actual sales figures and provide an up-to-date trading position statement. They are made available mid-month following the end of the prior month after all member garden centres have submitted their results.

The BoT reports allow members to compare their trading positions with other centres.

The GCA represents garden centres nationwide.

Through sharing information and its inspection programme the GCA helps members to achieve high standards in customer service, plant quality and reliability.

The Gardens Group named as finalists at Planet Mark Awards

The Gardens Group has been announced as one of the finalists at the Planet Mark Awards 2023, which is set to take place at The Royal Institution in London on Thursday 2 November...

The Gardens Group has been announced as one of the finalists at the Planet Mark Awards 2023, which is set to take place at The Royal Institution in London on Thursday 2 November.

Shortlisted in the Employee Engagement category, the independent garden centre group has been recognised by the panel for engaging its teams in Sherborne, Yeovil and Poundbury at all levels, resulting in a 25.9% carbon reduction per employee over the past year.

During its third year as voluntary members of Planet Mark, a sustainability certification scheme backed by the Eden Project, The Gardens Group once again engaged its 160-strong team at all stages of the process, from idea generation and target setting to measurement and review. Through hundreds of new initiatives, pushed forward by smaller groups of staff assigned to each task, they have managed to achieve a substantial reduction in carbon emissions in nearly all reported areas, which include Buildings, Travel, Waste, Water, Procurement and Homeworking.

Created to shine a light on Planet Mark member companies and individuals that have gone above and beyond to maximise their impact, the Planet Mark Awards are judged by a panel of hand-picked sustainability experts, with each award based on a robust criterion. 13 Planet Mark Awards are set to be presented on Thursday 2 November, and The Gardens Group are one of four businesses to be shortlisted in the Employee Engagement category.

Mike Burks, managing director of The Gardens Group, commented: “With well over 100 team members, spread over many departments at three different garden centres, we knew that employee engagement would be vital if we were to achieve significant carbon reductions through the Planet Mark scheme. We’ve had some real stars in the team, driving initiatives forward over the past 3 years, but I’m most proud of the efforts made by the group as a whole, as our achievements simply would not have been possible without a joined up approach across every corner of the business. As a voluntary sustainability certification scheme, Planet Mark’s membership is full of wonderful businesses all going above and beyond off their own backs, so to be recognised amongst this inspiring group feels very special. Environmental impact is now at the forefront of our minds in everything we do, and this is down to the unwavering enthusiasm of The Gardens Group team, so I couldn’t think of a better category to be nominated in.”

HTA and RHS collaborate to support growers transition to peat-free

The Horticultural Trades Association and the Royal Horticultural Society marked a significant milestone in sustainable horticulture with the launch of the first peat-free workshop, part of the RHS Transition to Peat-Free Fellowship...

The Horticultural Trades Association and the Royal Horticultural Society marked a significant milestone in sustainable horticulture with the launch of the first peat-free workshop, part of the RHS Transition to Peat-Free Fellowship.

The workshop, hosted in Hertfordshire brought together growers and industry experts to share knowledge and delve into the latest insights and trials on peat-free plant production.

The ‘Practical Management of Peat-Free Growing Media’ workshop highlighted the importance of quality control, monitoring, and actively managing peat-free growing media to obtain the best results. Participants gained valuable insights into various peat-free growing media performances across a range of plant species from the RHS Transition to Peat-Free Fellowship. Additionally, there was an opportunity to understand how fellow growers have approached their own trials while learning how to instigate technical crop monitoring to manage media performance and prevent nutritional deficiencies.

In addition to the insights from the RHS Fellow Dr Raghavendra Prasad, the event featured presentations from Dr Gracie Barrett at The Farplants Group, Dr Neil Bragg of Bulrush, and Andrew Wilson from ICL. The day concluded with a visit to Allensmore Nurseries, giving participants a firsthand look at the RHS trials being staged there, along with the nursery’s own trials and peat-free commercial crops.

Wayne Brough, Technical Horticulture Manager at the HTA, said: "This partnership underscores our joint commitment to sustainability. It's heartening to witness our members actively participating in the RHS Transition to Peat-Free Fellowship's peat-free trials, contributing to a more environmentally conscious future. Our members remain resolute in their mission to reduce professional peat usage, as evidenced by the significant decline recorded in the Growing Media Monitor. In 2022, peat constituted just 24% of the total volume of growing media, compared to 36% in 2021, and this trend continues to decline. Credit goes to the collaborative efforts of UK suppliers, growers, and retailers in embracing peat-free practices. The workshop highlighted that despite many successes, there are still challenges, including the need for more support for businesses to transition.”

Dr Raghavendra Prasad, RHS Peat-Free Fellow, added: “We were delighted to hold the first in what will be a series of workshops, providing growers with the latest information and technical expertise to help their transition to peat-free. The RHS knows that we will only achieve peat-free by working together with the industry[i] and government, sharing knowledge and success stories. We felt it was particularly important to give an insight into peat-free trials being undertaken by the RHS with the partners in the Fellowship and demonstrate the ways horticultural businesses can conduct their own trials in a commercial setting for their plant ranges. Presentations and key messages from the workshop will soon be made available so that all growers can have the chance to learn from this event, and we will be sharing more details of further regional workshops very soon.”

The HTA is committed to ongoing support for growers through regular Grower Technical Workshops and events such as their National Conference next month (5 October).

On 20 November, the RHS is holding a ‘Transition to Peat Free and Sustainable Practices’ event at Lindley Hall, Vincent Square, London. The event will bring together experts from industry and the RHS Transition to Peat Free Fellowship to share information and technical support with growers from across all sectors of horticulture. Growers, manufacturers, suppliers and industry experts will be holding technical workshops, and there will be trade stands spanning sustainable horticulture, including growing media, biological controls, sustainable packaging, irrigation, fertilisers and plug plant suppliers.

With just days to go before PATS Telford opens its doors, the final preparations are being made for what will be the biggest show so far in the event’s 15-year history.

PATS Telford takes place over Sunday and Monday, 1-2 October, and visitors can expect to find more exhibitors than ever with a record number of 260 companies showcasing hundreds of new products.

Retailers and buyers will also have the opportunity to take advantage of an impressive number of show offers, and discover trade secrets from leading figures in the pet and grooming industries.

“There has been a tremendous amount of work going on behind the scenes to make sure that PATS Telford delivers the widest range of exhibitors, new products and professional grooming demonstrations,” said organiser Gordon Thomas.

“Visitor numbers have been growing rapidly over the years and we’re confident the trend will continue this year. There is so much to see and do, and everyone can rest assured they will be given a warm and friendly reception. We can’t wait to greet everyone.”

Visitors can also expect a warm welcome from the industry’s leading brands as well as a host of new faces. The introduction of the New Starter Zone, in association with PetQuip and media partner PPM, has been well received, resulting in 30 start-up companies taking a stand in the zone at Telford.

DotDotPet, a supplier of pet wellness and lifestyle products, has welcomed the opportunity to exhibit in the New Starter Zone. Director Harry Chapman said: “I couldn’t think of a better platform to launch DotDotPet. With attendees across various professions within the UK and international pet markets it allows us to perfectly showcase our brand and products.”

Extreme Lounging is also new to the pet industry and will be launching a pet bed range at PATS. The company’s Joe Shrimpton commented: “The exhibition is a very important platform as it allows us to showcase newness to the industry. It’s also crucial to see people face to face rather than just doing it electronically.”

And Jo Deluce, Senior Distributor UK & Europe for Yakeese Dog Treats, added: “It will be our first trade show in the UK, and we chose PATS as we feel it targets the right audience. The professional layout of the exhibition and friendly support throughout the process has reassured us that we made the right choice. Hearing that traders regularly return to the show instilled confidence in us to come along.”

So why should buyers from pet stores and garden centres attend this year’s PATS Telford? Here’s what visitors can expect:

  • 260 exhibitors – a record number for PATS
  • All the latest pet product launches under one roof
  • Top class demonstrations from dog groomers
  • Unrivalled show offers and competitions

One of the major successes at PATS shows over the years has been the New Product Showcase, sponsored by pbwnews.  Nearly 400 new products will be on show in two designated areas, and from all the entries, a panel of independent retailers will decide the winners of the prestigious New Product Awards.

The Grooming Workshop, in association with For All DogKind, will include some of the country’s leading groomers. The demonstrations will highlight the knowledge and expertise required to complete traditional grooming techniques successfully as well as showing off a few modern and creative ideas as well.

Parking is free at the Telford International Centre, and everyone will receive a free show catalogue and a complimentary lunch voucher in addition to the regular tea or coffee voucher.

PATS Telford is definitely THE place to be this October so make sure you register for free entry to the show at www.patshow.co.uk where you’ll also find a full list of exhibitors.

Durstons supports retailers meeting continued peat demand with carefully-curated range

With the goalposts for a peat-free future in the garden industry perpetually moving and retailers still committed to supplying customers that haven’t yet made the switch, Durston Garden Products offer garden centres a peat-based growing media offer from a responsible supplier...

With the goalposts for a peat-free future in the garden industry perpetually moving and retailers still committed to supplying customers that haven’t yet made the switch, Durston Garden Products offer garden centres a peat-based growing media offer from a responsible supplier.

As Defra minister Mark Spencer admitted this month that the Government body has “not made a final decision at this stage” about removing peat from the sector, it throws yet further confusion into the arena around the upcoming 2024 ban on peat in retail. Whether this deadline remains in place or not, retailers continue to see demand for peat-based products in the meantime.

Whilst we know that we are definitively moving towards a peat-free future and steps are being taken to phase out the use of this natural resource, Durstons wants to help retailers sate the current appetite for peat-based growing media as responsibly as possible.

Best practices

Unlike some peat providers, who have been accused of decimating bogs due to irresponsible practices, Durstons have always strived to farm peat responsibly and with due care taken to protect the surrounding area.

Natural topsoil onsite is responsibly managed, so that this vital natural resource is not damaged or lost during the farming process and is carefully replaced once extraction has taken place. It is never taken offsite.

The family-run supplier also employs a sympathetic strategy to minimise impact by farming in strips and leaving vegetation in place in between each of these sections.

“As a business, our main focus going forward is on developing and perfecting our peat-free ranges, as that is where the future of gardening lies”, explains Durstons director Dan Durston. “However, we recognise that retailers still want to service customers who will demand peat products until a ban is finally enforced and we want to help them do in the most sustainable way possible and with respect for the natural landscape.”

He continues: “We strive to act as responsibly as possible in bringing peat-based products to market. We are extremely strict in the way we operate to minimise the impact on local wildlife and release of carbon. It is a careful process that we use, and we aren’t moveable on that! Conservation is important, which is why we have also worked hard over the years to restore peat bogs, creating areas of natural regeneration and important habitats for wildlife.”

The responsible choice

The peat content in all of Durstons’ products has been reduced in line with regulations but continue to deliver outstanding results, thanks in no small part to Durstons’ unique GRO-BOOST additive.

Durstons were also one of the first growing media brands to introduce 100% recyclable packaging and has also incorporated 30% recycled material into the make-up of their compost bags.

Durston boasts a comprehensive offer to suit all gardeners, including multi-purpose and specialist composts, plus grow bags, soil improvers and decorative bark. Firm favourites with retailers include Durstons’ Multi-Purpose Compostand Multi-Purpose Compost with John Innes; both premium products that boast excellent nutrient content and deliver consistently impressive results.

For garden centres seeking a value product, Durston’s Manor Farm Multi-Purpose Compost provides all the nutrients needed to establish and actively promote healthy growth in seeds, cuttings, young plants, flowers and vegetables, for an extremely competitive price point.

The company has also invested heavily in developing a comprehensive peat-free offer that delivers consistent results. Investment in this peat-free family of products and their GRO BOOST technology is ongoing, as Durstons is keen to help retailers build consumer confidence in peat-free products that really work.

Responsible and reliable

With pre-season orders in full flow now, Durstons have great stock availability at their state-of-the-art facility in Somerset and are primed to help retailers reap rewards in the growing media category.

Dan Durston concludes: “We can help you shape your compost offer and service your customers – whatever their expectations – with quality products that achieve real growing success. We may take care in the way we source our raw materials but that in no way impacts our ability to meet demand. We can still deliver the volumes you want and keep your compost sales soaring in 2024!”

Fresh Produce, Food, Agriculture and Horticulture recruitment specialists, MorePeople are on a mission to highlight the value of Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) to the industry. Last Tuesday, the firm held an exclusive event for top-tier executives to launch their new initiative.

Championed by Barclays Business Bank and the Non-Executive Directors’ Association (NEDA), the event welcomed representatives from both to speak – Adam White and Barry Gamble respectively.

Industry big hitters, such as the former CEO of the Co-op, Steve Murrells, now head of Hilton Food Group, joined start-up entrepreneur, Charlie Guy of LettUs Grow and owner of the family-run Burgess Farms, William Burgess to give attendees real insight into the positive impact NEDs have had on their businesses.

Steve Murrells had this to say: “Guy Morton asked me to share my experiences and learnings working with Non-Executive Directors as part of the event. I’ve always found them extremely helpful in many areas. In a way, they are the cheerleaders of any organisation because not only are they there to bring insight and experience, they are also there to make sure the management team feel motivated and supported.”

Executive Chairman of MorePeople, Guy Moreton said: “We want to showcase just how invaluable a Non-Executive Director can be to a business, no matter how big or how small. This event helped us do just that. I was blown away by our speakers – we all were – they did a brilliant job of positioning NEDs as the ‘critical friend’ all business owners and exec teams need by their side.”

Other speakers, including life coach and clean energy consultant, Jacqui Green and Chairman of Ingå Group, Neil Sanderson, both NEDs themselves, provided an honest and uplifting introduction into becoming a NED, explaining just how much you stand to gain both personally and professionally from taking up the position.

Moreton adds: “At MorePeople, we’ve had a NED for over 20 years now and it was the best business decision I ever made. It transformed MorePeople. We want to help clients and other businesses reap the rewards and find them the right NED for the job. We also want to support those looking for NED positions find businesses where they can really add value and properly get stuck into the role.”

Phil Cookson of Roythornes Solicitors completed the line-up with an “everything you need to know” presentation on the legalities of becoming or hiring a NED.

The event was held on Tuesday, 19th September at Peterborough’s Kingsgate Conference Centre and was attended by some 100 food, agriculture and horticultural business owners and senior executives.

East of England’s green-fingered folk flock to BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair

Audley End House and Gardens in Saffron Walden was the destination for 18,000 visitors earlier this month for the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair, in association with English Heritage. From experienced gardeners to first-time growers, there was something for everyone with seasonal gardening inspiration and show gardens, tips and advice from well-known experts, workshops, tours and gorgeous plants.

Celebrating its second year at Audley End House and Gardens, the Autumn Fair brought double the garden inspiration and shopping and offered a host of exciting new features. An avenue of stunning Showcase Gardens, compact Beautiful Borders, and Association of Professional Landscapers’ Skills Competition Gardens by two of the UK’s top landscaping teams delighted and inspired visitors with achievable ideas to take home. More than 35 specialist plant nurseries, growers and retailers offered a superb garden shopping experience, with delicious food and drink to buy and try at the BBC Good Food Market.

Visitors to the Autumn Fair had the opportunity to vote for their favourite garden designs to crown a Visitor’s Choice award in the two garden categories. The visitor vote for Best Showcase Garden went to JJH Landscapes from Oxfordshire and Radial Landscapes from West Sussex for their drought-tolerant 21st Century Jacobean Garden. As part of the Fair’s ‘APL Skills – The Professionals’ Competition, the teams were tasked to build a garden in just 16.5 hours, with the clock counting down to midday on the first day of the Autumn Fair.

In the Beautiful Border category, visitors voted the Make It Flourish Together Border into the ‘Visitors’ Choice’ top spot, designed and created by Great Dunmow flower grower and community gardening leader, Cara Thompson.

During three days of the Autumn Fair, expert design, landscaping and horticultural assessors presented Best in Show awards for Best Showcase Garden (Lucy Chamberlain, Gemma Sturges and Kelly Fowler, An Edible Garden Through Time), Best Beautiful Border (Rachel Sporborg, Free Thinking) and Best Gardeners’ World Magazine Subscriber Border (Consuelo Franco, On Cloud 9).

Alongside the Autumn Fair’s plants and gardens, the stars of the show were Gardeners’ World TV presenters Frances Tophill, Arit Anderson and Adam Frost. The TV trio shared autumn gardening advice with the Gardeners’ World Magazine team at the BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Stage and garden tales ‘In Conversation’ with Chris Bavin in Audley End’s restored Parterre gardens.

Visitors were able to shop, shop, shop from a great variety of exhibitors including Eden Swings with outdoor tables enhanced with swing seats, and Green Roof Shelters with their expertly created rooftop habitats. The Award for Best Floral Exhibitor went to W.S. Warmenhoven with their wonderful Allium display. The Autumn Fair organisers are also delighted to announce the second and third places went to Pheasant Acre Plants and New Forest Hostas.

Rachel Poletti-Gadd, Portfolio Director - Gardening Division at Immediate Live, organisers of BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair, said: “Audley End is a magnificent setting for the Autumn Fair and we were thrilled to see so many visitors enjoying themselves over the weekend. It’s been wonderful to see the extent to which Audley End, and particularly the Kitchen Garden, has inspired the garden designers this year, from the Best in Show Edible Garden Through Time, the Gold award winning Brewable Border by English Heritage garden trainees, Anna Johnston and Charlotte Seers, and our new Let’s Grow space, to the geometry of the Great Hall which inspired the winners of the APL Skills Competition. We can’t wait to be back next year with more exciting new features.”

Daisy Poole, Head of Commercial Development at English Heritage, said:“We were delighted to welcome the BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair back for its second year this September. The show was bigger and better than ever with so much to see and be inspired by. Audley End House and Gardens is steeped in garden history so it’s a privilege for us to be able to share this rich heritage and our own garden highlights with the BBC Gardeners’ World audience.”

The BBC Gardeners’ World Autumn Fair returns to Audley End House and Gardens from Friday 30 August to Sunday 1 September 2024. Tickets will go on sale in the spring. Find out more at www.bbcgardenersworldfair.com.

We take a closer look at the unique innovations that set the AMES Tools offering apart from what is currently available in the market, whilst building brand loyalty.

Carbon Steel Digging Spade

  • Tempered Steel creates a new generation of high-quality spade heads. After undergoing an intensive heat treatment, these heads are designed to last. Tempering creates optimum wear resistance and strength, whilst enabling flexibility when it’s needed most.
  • Comfort Step® is a UK industry-first that will see consumers fall in love with their spade again! This extra-large, textured foot tread allows for increased power and leverage.
  • Double rivets provide up to 45% additional strength, making this a tool to use season after season.
  • Stamped and forged from a single solid piece of carbon steel, which means no weld points or weak points. AMES is one of the only manufacturers to do this.
  • Connection strength is increased with the deeper set wooden handle. Sitting further into the shaft, this simple design works to increase strength and make bends and breaks a thing of the past.
  • D-shaped ergonomic handle provides increased comfort and grip, so that time spent gardening can be a more enjoyable experience for all.
  • Ethically sourced FSC® certified ash wood is used to create the handles on all Carbon Steel tools.
  • Ideal for digging, soil turning and general garden maintenance. This is the perfect all-rounder.

Wyevale Nurseries’ hosts Open Day for ‘Greening Gloucestershire’ stakeholders

Staff from Gloucestershire County Council and 25 other guests from its ‘Greening Gloucestershire’ stakeholders attended a special Open Day and tour at one of the UK’s leading nurseries.

They visited Herefordshire-based Wyevale Nurseries’ Transplants section, had a walk & talk through its Transplant Fields and stopped-by its container trees site before touring its Container Plants department.

Alan Young, Amenity Sales Executive & GCC Account Manager at Wyevale Nurseries, explains: “A couple of months ago, I sowed the idea to GCC of us hosting a ‘Day on The Nursery’ event for their stakeholders. The GCC Tree Team thought this was a fabulous idea just ahead of the forthcoming 2023/24 planting season.”

Wyevale Nurseries supplies the full range of transplant tree and shrub species and related sundry items to GCC’s stakeholders, as part of its ‘Greening Gloucestershire’ campaign.

Throughout the upcoming season, Wyevale Nurseries will supply many thousands of transplants and trees through the county of Gloucestershire.

Among those who attended the event were GCC’s Tree Team as well as tree wardens, arboriculturists and representatives from other local authorities, the Duchy of Cornwall, Gloucestershire Local Nature Partnership, Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, schools and other charities.

The day included a full tour of all Wyevale Nursery departments, starting at Transplants, then Container Plants and Trees. The guests saw plants growing in the fields, as well as the propagation unit and potting facilities.

Alan adds: “Together we made the event happen. The sun shone for us! We had lovely blue skies and warm sunshine all day to undertake a full guided tour of our nurseries, from the very smallest trees at our transplant nursery near Ledbury, to our tallest trees at our Tree Nursery.

“We also visited our container plants nursery in Hereford, where our Nursery Manager, Steve Read talked to the group about ‘in – house propagation’ with a tour of our Propagation unit and re-using water on the nursery. Our Production Manager, Kyle Ross gave us an interesting talk on biosecurity measures and the importance of buying from a Plant Healthy Certified nursery.

“We also visited our famous new reservoir. Everyone had a fabulous day and there was lots of discussion and networking within the group. We even managed to visit Foxbury Fields, the vineyard owned by our Chairman, Heather Williamson, for a wine tasting session before the grapes for this season are harvested. The event was very successful for all. We intend to repeat it in 2024.”

Wyevale Nurseries’ product selection is admired across the industry and the talented team regularly introduces new, award-winning plant varieties.

Its main business is to supply garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners with a comprehensive array of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants.

New RocketGro launches garner great response from buyers

With a River Cottage endorsement for its compost range, its new liquid plant food range shortlisted for a Glee New Product Award, and buyers clamouring to start listing the exciting new lines on offer, it’s safe to say that RocketGro had an extremely successful summer.

The game-changing growing media brand showcased 6 brand-new bagged products on stand at Glee in June, along with a collection of new liquid plant feeds; all of which were very well received by the industry. The new additions take RocketGro’s portfolio to an impressive 22 products and mean the Somerset manufacturer can now provide garden retailers with a comprehensive offer of peat-free growing media and associated products. It was welcome news from buyers who attended the show and RocketGro had some great conversations and fantastic leads to follow up.

The liquid feed range has proved a huge success, taking up residency in all five Haskins Garden Centres before it was even showcased at Glee, followed closely by a listing with Klondyke, which now carries the collection in all 22 of its centres. Testament to the strength of the RocketGro brand and the quality of its products, other retailers are pushing to follow suit, with more orders being taken behind the scenes and further stockists to be announced soon.

New additions

Created to provide a value proposition for gardeners seeking a sustainable and organic option, RocketGro’s newest range comprises five liquid concentrate feeds: Tomato Food, Rose & Shrub Plant Food, All-Purpose Plant Food, Ericaceous Plant Food, and Lawn Feed.

Offered in 1.5 litre bottles (RRP £6.99), including a generous 50% extra free during 2023/2024, the liquid plant feeds boast an attractive price point for retailers and gardeners alike.

Meanwhile, the 6 new additions to RocketGro’s bagged offering comprise Premium Bark Chunks, Farmyard Manure, Rose Compost, Chicken Manure, Top Soil, and a 50-litre bag of RocketGro Multi-Purpose Compost.

The manures and new speciality composts contain bio-active microbes and feed plants for up to three months, whilst the Premium Bark Chunks offer a superior finish, with quality bark pieces and absolutely no shredded cheap wood! As well as being decorative, the bark chunks also improve soil biodiversity and are pet and child friendly.

These exciting new products join RocketGro’s existing organic, peat-free line up – including its flagship Magic Mulch, the UK’s biggest Tomato & Veg planter, and impressive River Cottage-endorsed collection of composts – meaning RocketGro can now provide garden retailers with a truly comprehensive offer.

All products are chemical free, 100% organic approved, British grown, sourced and manufactured, and are the by-product of renewable energy production. Packaging is also 100% recyclable. Vibrant packaging across the range, with impactful imagery and clear messaging, is guaranteed to catch the eye of consumers in store. Add to that RocketGro’s unbeatable eco story and these products are set to fly out the door in the 2024 season.

Fantastic response

RocketGro had always anticipated a good response from the market to its new products but was still overwhelmed by just how positive the reaction has been now that buyers have had the opportunity to get hands-on with the ranges.

Managing Director, Toby Thomas said: “We’ve had a brilliant year so far and we had a great show. We always have a story to tell when we exhibit but we were particularly excited to go to Glee this year with a fantastic ne
w chapter in the RocketGro journey. We saw the need for these new products, and we know the power they can have on shelf for a retailer, but it was still a pleasant surprise to garner so much interest from buyers. That has continued apace after the show, which is great.”

He continues: “Our enhanced offer, including our River Cottage-endorsed compost range, means we can fully service garden retailers and continue to build and develop relationships with garden centres across the market. It is a really exciting time for the business!”

RocketGro has teamed up with EP Barrus and now benefits from an increased number of territory representatives – currently 21 in number – who will provide garden centres across the UK with hands-on support for the ongoing sales of RocketGro products.

With pre-season orders going strong, RocketGro assures retailers it has stock ready to go and has capacity to meet an uptick in demand for 2024.

Toby concludes: “By partnering with RocketGro and stocking our products, garden centres and nurseries have the opportunity to work with a reliable and supportive independent manufacturer that has the scale, investment and manpower in place to become the UK’s leading producer of affordable, quality, 100% peat-free only compost in the UK.”

The AMES Companies appoints new Operations Director

As the AMES Companies’ expansion plans continue apace, a new Operation Director – David Wright – has joined the team to ensure a smooth transition into season 24 and beyond.

Responsible for all operational activities from supply chain and manufacturing to delivery to the client base, David will also closely monitor the business’s quality, cost and delivery performance. In doing so, he will work alongside the wider team to ensure that the company achieves and exceeds client service and product expectations.

Bringing to the role extensive operational experience, David’s appointment comes at a time when the AMES Companies has heavily invested in its Pollington site in East Yorkshire. Now home to AMES Tools and Apta, as well as the Kelkay and Woodshaw brands, the site needs to perform better than ever.

Elsewhere, under David’s guidance, new synergies will be created that offer multiple benefits for AMES’ retail customers, including new production capabilities, increased stock profile and access to point-of-sale support. Delivery to store, including cross-brand ordering, will also influence David’s new role as he looks to further cement the company’s promise to always offer the best products, service, quality and price, thereby making it the ‘partner of choice’ for garden retailers across the country.

David said of his appointment: “Until I saw the role at AMES, I wasn’t looking to change jobs, but this was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss. From the Leadership Team to its strategic approach to how it does business, the AMES Companies stands out for all the right reasons. Throughout the recruitment process I was able to have complete visibility of what AMES stand for as a business and how important the role of “people” is to it. It also felt like an organisation where I could make a difference, add value and be an integral part of its growth and development.

“For me, this role represents an opportunity for both me and the business. In my short time here, I have been amazed by the openness and proactivity on offer. I believe we have already and will continue to build a strong team capable of driving change and disrupting the market with a strong product offering and a focus on performance that places the client truly front and centre in everything we do.”

HTA welcomes EFRA Select Committee Urban Green Spaces Inquiry

The House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee has launched an Inquiry into Urban Green Spaces...

The House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee has launched an Inquiry into Urban Green Spaces.

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has been actively engaging with parliamentarians and policy-makers in calling for a greater focus and attention on the value of urban green spaces, so this news is very much welcomed.

Jennifer Pheasey, HTA Director of Public Affairs, commented: "This inquiry by the influential EFRA Select Committee is an important opportunity for our sector to set out the evidence and crucial need we have to grow our urban green spaces. With 30 million UK gardeners and many more who love and use our green spaces, we need to ensure we maximise their value. Urban green spaces deliver huge social, economic and environmental benefits. The HTA has long been calling for politicians and policy-makers to give greater recognition of the value of environmental horticulture, not least because we deliver £28.8 billion in GDP and support 674,000 jobs in the UK. We have set out publicly a number of asks already - including establishing an Office for Green Spaces - to deliver the cross-government and joined-up policy-making we need to deliver real change."

The HTA now seeks inputs and views from members (policy@hta.org.uk) to shape its written evidence, with the deadline for submissions being 20 October.

At its National Conference on 5 October, the HTA's Director of Public Affairs, Jennifer Pheasey, will be chairing a panel to discuss how we can maximise our urban green spaces in delivering the challenges faced - environmental, air quality, health and wellbeing. Green spaces can mean anything from small gardens to huge parks. All of which are supplied and supported by UK Environmental Horticulture.

More details on the Inquiry can be found here: https://committees.parliament.uk/call-for-evidence/3252

Gardenex has announced its UK pavilion at the long established US show for the lawn and garden, hardware and DIY industries.

The National Hardware Show (NHS) being held in Las Vegas 26-28 March 2024 attracts around 11,000 buyers, including 20% from overseas and 1,000 exhibitors, and the garden sector in the show features a broad product spectrum.

With the US lawn and garden market estimated to be worth over $50 billion, the NHS is the largest marketplace in the world for this sector.

“We are delighted to be hosting a group of UK companies for NHS in 2024,” commented Emma Brazier, Event Manager, Gardenex.

“We have secured a prime spot in the new Europe section, located between two main entrances, including some excellent corner stands. We have negotiated a package which includes a pole and drape booth, chairs, carpet, lighting, cleaning and fascia board. Exhibitors in the pavilion will have the full support of our team both prior to and at the event in terms of marketing, operations, freight, travel and accommodation”.

The National Hardware Show has a record of bringing opportunities to UK companies, as Dan Robson, Managing Director, Grow Sow Simple confirmed, “The National Hardware Show was integral in identifying and connecting us to new business.  One order with a major retailer has allowed our company to grow three fold as a result of exhibiting at NHS”.

The show attracts a diverse range of buyers from home centers, independent retailers, online retailers, wholesalers, distributors and other industry leaders who visit to see the newest products, trends and innovations in the industry.

Buyer attendees include Home Depot, Amazon, Ace Hardware, Home Hardware, Bunnings, Master Nursery, Williams-Sonoma, Target, Lowe’s, Canadian Tire, TJX, Wayfair and QVC.

HTA welcomes the EFRA Select Committee inquiry into education and careers in land-based sectors

The House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee has launched an inquiry into education and careers in land-based sectors.

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) welcomes this inquiry as it provides a platform to highlight the pivotal role of horticulture in delivering green skills, jobs and rewarding careers. It is especially encouraging to note that the Committee Chair, Sir Robert Goodwill MP, has acknowledged horticulture as distinct from agriculture, recognising the wide range of career opportunities within our sector.

Jennifer Pheasey, HTA Director of Public Affairs, commented: “This inquiry provides an important opportunity to raise the profile of careers in environmental horticulture. Challenges in attracting and recruiting into the sector have long been identified as barriers to growth. The current directly employed workforce is 420,000 people.

"The HTA is looking forward to responding to the committee’s inquiry to highlight some of the challenges its members face and some of the possible solutions. The sector is working through many avenues to inspire and attract talented young individuals to contribute to the future of horticulture while simultaneously creating an inclusive environment that welcomes adults seeking career changes and those passionate about making a meaningful environmental impact.

"With such a breadth of roles and routes available, our industry has the potential to offer rewarding and sustainable employment opportunities for everyone. We believe this must be better understood and recognised by all stakeholders and policymakers involved in education, skills and career advice.”

The HTA now seeks inputs and views from members (policy@hta.org.uk) to shape its written evidence, with the submission deadline being 3 November.

At its National Conference on 5 October, the HTA's Learning and Development Manager, Alex Jenkins, will chair a panel discussion addressing pressing questions on how to inspire, equip, and empower the leaders of tomorrow in horticulture. The panel will explore topics ranging from embracing diversity and inclusivity to harnessing innovative training and development approaches, uncovering the keys to nurturing a vibrant and capable workforce.

Calls for 'compost revolution' to avert looming waste crisis

The unique and diverse group of over 20 organisations from the National Trust and RHS to the Horticultural Trade Association and Suez, are launching a new movement called Enrich the Earth and will publish a manifesto calling for a radical rethink of how we handle organic waste in the UK.

It urges a '"compost revolution” to increase the proportion of households composting at home and decrease levels of contamination in our garden and food waste so we can maximise its value and use it for growing.

Enrich the Earth will also demonstrate that food and green waste can be used as part of the mix to create a more sustainable alternative to peat. In partnership with Durham Council, aground-breaking trial, the first of its kind at this scale, will aim create a new compost containing up to 30% of green and food waste.  This compost will be tested with professional and amateur growers to measure effectiveness across plant types and growing conditions.

Garden centres, community gardening groups, restaurants and universities will also be involved in a concerted effort to compost garden waste and non-animal byproduct food scraps more, use wormeries and reduce contamination in organic waste collections. Learnings will be openly shared with the aim of rolling out the trial across the country.

You will find a press release below and I have attached the manifesto. I can also organise a chat with Trewin Restorick (ex-CEO of Hubbub) who is the driver behind this collaboration if you’d like to explore in more detail, or with Simon Blackhurst, Project Director of Enrich The Earth.

Westland: Last call to come on board with G.E.M.S for 2024

The end of September marks the last call for retailers to join the G.E.M.S revolution in 2024. Retailers who wish to benefit should contact their Westland Sales representative now to book a meeting to find out how G.E.M.S can bring growth to their garden centre.

The unveiling of the G.E.M.S (Garden Equipment Merchandising System) by Westland at Glee 2022 marked the commencement of a transformative journey aimed at enhancing the outdoor area and merchandising of plant support products in UK and Irish garden centres. Historically, this category has presented significant merchandising challenges, and we wanted to make a profound change.

Since its launch, over 3000 meters of the G.E.M.S system have been successfully delivered and installed by the Westland Merchandising team. With the benefits being enjoyed hundreds of retailers and thousands of gardeners. This innovative approach to clear and straightforward merchandising has made a substantial impact in a gardening category valued at over £50 million in retail sales. It's  clear that garden centres adopting G.E.M.S have seen a c.25% increase in annual sales.

In 2023, the outdoor GEMS system expanded with the introduction of four new modules for the outdoor area. Weedstop™ and Plant Protection, both launched in Autumn 2023, address two critical autumn categories that have traditionally been challenging to merchandise. In January 2024, Crop and Netting, as well as Growers Bamboo, will become available. Growers Bamboo, designed for more professional gardeners, offers three different lengths suitable for various plants, boasting extra thickness for added stability.

Looking ahead to 2024, G.E.M.S extends its presence indoors with customised modules for propagation, accessories, and brushware. Recognising the higher merchandising expectations inside garden centres, the system now incorporates an FSC® real wood façade and wooden hoppers for fast-moving products like string and wire. The newly introduced G.E.M.S indoor displays are meticulously designed to offer customers a clear and effortless shopping experience when searching for gardening essentials. The timber surround on the stand not only adds visual appeal but also draws attention to the products. These stands exude professionalism, attractiveness, neatness, and ease of replenishment. We really hope our customers enjoy using them, as much as we have designing them!

The response to the G.E.M.S launch at Glee 2023 was nothing short of remarkable, culminating in the prestigious recognition of winning the Glee New Product Awards for Retail Services and Experiences in 2023. Orders have poured in from both existing and new customers, and Westland eagerly anticipates supporting their successful product launches. With stock delivery options available in January and orders continuing through to the end of September, there is still ample opportunity to embrace the benefits of G.E.M.S.

Range Headlines:

G.E.M.S Modules are all the same size: 1.2m(w) x 0.5m(d) x 2.2m (h), POS is waterproof, and the stands are powder coated for a long undercover life

  • 15 x Outdoor G.E.M.S Modules: Metal Border Plant Support, Conical Plant Support, Bamboo (x2), Gardstake, Treestake, Willow and Bamboo Hoop, Willow Trellis, Framed Trellis, Rivet Trellis, Wire Netting, Bulk Roll, Weed Fabric, Plant Protection, Crop and Pond Netting and newly added Growers Bamboo
  • 6 x Indoor G.E.M.S Modules: Brushware (x1), Propagation (x2), Accessories (x3)

Order by end of September for installation by Westland from January

Martin Cowell of Cowell’s Garden Centre in Newcastle, is cycling 900 miles passing through seven countries to help celebrate his 50th year and to raise vital funds for two of his favourite charities: Greenfingers Charity and True Colours Theatre CIO Foundation.

Starting in his hometown of Newcastle and ending at the International Garden Centre Association congress in Italy, his Tyne to Rhine trip will be an unsupported solo ride. The route mainly follows the EuroVelo 15 – The Rhine Cycle Route is one of the most modern cycle paths in the world and combines Europe's diversity of landscapes. Over 900 miles (1440 km) it’ll take Martin through seven countries from the shipyards on the Tyne to the source of the Rhine in the Alpine village of Andermatt in Switzerland. From there, he’ll head on up up up over the alps into Italy, ending at Lake Maggiore 8 days later.

One bike, 900 miles, one daft Geordie and two amazing charities. True Colours Theatre (Registered Charity Number: 1192136) is an inclusive theatre school for children and young people living in the North East of England. Many of their members have additional needs such as Autism, ADHD, anxiety disorders and physical and life limiting conditions and various mental health issues. True Colours Theatre provides a caring, warm and welcoming environment, a place of acceptance and inclusion where members can grow in confidence without fear of judgement or stigma. Greenfingers (Registered Charity number: 1076640) aims to provide all life-limited children, their families, and carers, within their hospice, emotional support through the power and pleasure of nature. They create beautiful, well-designed outdoor spaces for children to enjoy with their family, friends and siblings, whether through play and fun, or therapeutic rest and relaxation. Greenfingers Charity is driven by the belief that time spent outdoors, away from the bedside, can offer children and families under considerable stress a vital opportunity to embrace the benefits of being in the fresh air and engaging with the natural environment.

Martin said: “For my 40th year, I celebrated by cycling from John O’Groats to Lands’ End and completing my Geordie JOGLE fundraiser. Ten years later, it seemed fitting to create a new fundraising challenge and so the Tyne to Rhine was conceived. My daughter currently accesses classes available through True Colours Theatre, so it is very close to my heart. Greenfingers Charity is another wonderful charity creating magical, therapeutic gardens for life-limited children and their families in hospices. It would be wheelie terrific if you could chip in and push me along with whatever you can afford. Every penny makes a difference. I’m aiming to raise £10,000 and my intention is to split your kind donations 50:50 across the two charities. For whatever you can give, thank you very, very much”.

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising and Communications of Greenfingers Charity said: “We can’t thank Martin enough for choosing Greenfingers as one of the charities to benefit from this incredible 50th birthday challenge.  I am sure his determination and passion to make a difference will see him achieve this cycling feat of endurance. And we hope that his friends, and ours, will dig deep and support him as he makes the very long journey to the finish line on the banks of Lake Maggiore”.

A garden centre in Otley has recently installed a 227-panel solar array. The array, at Otley Garden Centre (formerly Stephen H Smith's and now part of the Yorkshire Garden Centres group) will save 91,715kWh of energy and will reduce the carbon footprint of the Pool Road site by 21.4 tonnes per annum.

"We are pleased to be investing further at Otley with this solar scheme. Some of the panels will be on the new roof we installed in January, with the remainder on existing buildings. There have never been any solar panels at Otley, and this was always high on our list of priorities when we acquired the business last year," said Mark Farnsworth, Yorkshire Garden Centres' MD.

"We have an extensive network of over 2100 solar panels throughout the group and it's a vital part of our sustainability agenda. There have been times this summer when Tong and Tingley Garden Centres have been self-sufficient, which is great from an environmental and an economic perspective. The annual electricity generated from Otley alone would power an electric car for 367,000 miles."

The Otley Garden Centre solar array was installed by Westwood Energy who also installed 1200 solar panels and 54 EV charging points at Tingley Garden Centre in South Leeds.

The installation is part of Yorkshire Garden Centres' 2023 energy plan that also includes conducting energy-saving audits at all four sites, aligning practices across the group; delivering carbon literacy training to the teams and optimising lighting and heating systems.

The Yorkshire Garden Centres group includes Otley, Tong, Tingley and Bingley Garden Centres.
