Hatton makes it a hat-trick for British Garden Centres - Group grows to 61 centres

British Garden Centres, the family-owned, Lincolnshire based garden centre business has made it a hat-trick of three new centres this year with their taking over of Hatton Garden Centre in Warwickshire this week.

The garden centre is a key part of the award-winning Hatton Country World and Adventure World shopping and tourist attraction in the heart of Warwickshire. Just 5 miles from Warwick Castle and minutes from J15 of the M40 the new centre makes a perfect addition to the British Garden Centres family.

Amy Stubbs, daughter of co-founder Charles Stubbs, said of the latest centre, “it is wonderful to be partnering with the team at Hatton Country World. Our experience as the UK’s largest family-led garden centre group tells us that this will be a fantastic garden centre. It will complement our existing Warwickshire centres at Studley, Charlecote, Newton Regis and Coventry.”

She went on to say; “we are on-site carrying out the first phase of improvements and interviewing to fill a number of vacancies in both the garden centre and restaurant. All being well, and weather allowing, we will open at Easter, or certainly very soon after.”

Hatton Garden Centre will generate 30+ new roles, further details can be found at https://britishgardencentres.com/vacancies-at-hatton-garden-centre/

Horticultural April Fools create smiles and thousands of social media views

The horticulture industry played its part in raising a smile on April 1st 2022 with a number of well executed April Fools which certainly garnered plenty of publicity.

Top billing goes to Pengelly Garden Centre who went viral on Facebook with their video about their new variety of Pastie Kernow seeds and their Pastie plants.  As the Post Office said "the winner for the best April Fools video goes to Pengelly Garden Centre, St Austell.  Absolute comedy gold."

Sarah Daniel said: "Thank you to everyone who liked & shared our post yesterday. It reached over 17,000 people & so far has been viewed over 14,000 times!

"We hope it gave you a laugh, which, with everything going on in the world, we feel is much needed at the moment."

It's worth watching right to the end...

Kev and the team at Lakeside Plant Centre in Telford had similar horticultural fool fun with their Lettuce Mayovien seeds, lettuce with Mayonnaise flavoured viens.  They explained: "With genetics being used more to create crops that are more drought tolerant, Hardy, quick to germinate. Is this a step too far ? A lettuce with a taste that gives a hint of mayonnaise. Obviously for Big Kev it's a 'no' as its a salad crop but what do you think???"

Michael Perry, Mr Plant Geek, posted an Instagram story with some old dutch cold weather tips on getting your bulbs to flower more quickly:

Those cheeky folk at the YHPA posted a spoof video about the formation of the MAHPA, for middle aged people in horticulture: "Introducing a new association: The Medium Aged People in Horticulture (MAPHA).  MAPHA hopes to bring together those in the industry who are aged 35 to 65, and who may find themselves feeling somewhat forgotten amongst all the media interest in horticulture's younger contingent."

And British Garden Centres gained plenty of local newspaper coverage for their Heavy Plant Crossing story, which we published on April 1st.  Link here.

That story prompted Neil Gow to send us this photo from 25 years ago, taken outside Worcester Garden Centre on Droitwich Road.

The Real Soil Company launches all-new 100% natural and organic Vegetable & Fruit Topsoil
GTN Xtra Promotion

Nurturing homegrown vegetables and fruit and giving them the best possible start is set to be easier than ever with the launch of the all-new 100% organic and natural Vegetable & Fruit Topsoil – a rich blend of topsoil and soil improver - from the experts at The Real Soil Company...

Nurturing homegrown vegetables and fruit and giving them the best possible start is set to be easier than ever with the launch of the all-new 100% organic and natural Vegetable & Fruit Topsoil – a rich blend of topsoil and soil improver - from the experts at The Real Soil Company.

Following hot on the heels of the innovative SuperSoil topsoil which shook up the growing media category in 2021, the new Vegetable & Fruit Topsoil will enjoy the same key characteristics that enable plants and crops to thrive from day one, delivering delicious flavour and higher crop yields.

Organic & natural

Packed full of organic nutrients for optimal plant health, The Real Soil Company’s Vegetable & Fruit Topsoil features a 100% natural topsoil, coupled with 100% natural, organic peat-free compost that is PAS100 certified and is analysed by The Real Soil Company’s soil scientists to ensure that every single batch is perfectly blended in accordance with its own stringent formula. In line with the Real Soil Company’s philosophy, all-new Vegetable & Fruit topsoil will not see the addition of any chemicals or artificial fertilisers to ensure the natural integrity of the product is not, and never will be, compromised.

Each bag of this latest innovation will feature slow-releasing major nutrients, trace elements and minerals which provide plants with a continual boost to help throughout their growth cycle. Vegetable & Fruit Topsoil is also designed to improve soil type and structure, including improved water retention and better resistance against pests and diseases.

An additional benefit for gardeners is the fact that the blend of topsoil and compost means less time spent digging, making it the perfect partner for those that have adopted the no-dig method of organic gardening.

Added value in the retail setting

The new Vegetable & Fruit Topsoil will also enjoy the same unique hand-drawn branding that has become synonymous with The Real Soil Company and helps to set it apart within the retail environment. To ensure that consumers can make educated buying decisions at the point, each bag will clearly highlight the product’s benefits and characteristics, whilst cutting through the noise to simplify the science, specifically addressing the inclusion of essential elements such as phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, and organic matter.

Talking about the latest introduction, James Romaine, Business Development Manager at The Real oil Company said: “The response to SuperSoil has far exceeded expectation so it felt right to build on this to build out a more comprehensive product portfolio. This latest addition opens up the home-growing category, providing consumers with more choice and greater confidence in their grow-your-own projects.

“What’s more, The Real Soil Company offering is designed to specifically appeal to the premium garden centre offering and those that are proactively seeking products that positively impact the climate change crisis, as well as challenging the use of harmful pesticides and peat-based products. This is a product for not just the now but long into the future.”

Garden centre harvests rainwater through walled kitchen garden Victorian plumbing system

Castle Gardens in Sherborne, Dorset has put plans in place to dramatically reduce its mains water consumption, connecting a brand new 50,000-litre rainwater harvesting tank to an underground Victorian brick-lined well and plumbing system...

Castle Gardens in Sherborne, Dorset has put plans in place to dramatically reduce its mains water consumption, connecting a brand new 50,000-litre rainwater harvesting tank to an underground Victorian brick-lined well and plumbing system.

Recently discovered under the garden centre by Mike and Louise Burks, who opened the garden centre in 1987, this brick-lined well was once the source of water for Sherborne Castle’s Walled Kitchen Garden, where Castle Gardens now sits, and has been revived to channel harvested rainwater into the bedding plant area.

As well as supplying a free and sustainable source of water for the plants, collected in the new purpose-built butyl-lined water tank, the remastered system also contributes to localised flood control, stopping excess water from hitting the road.

Mike Burks, managing director of The Gardens Group explains: “Harvesting rainwater is a great example of how gardening is a force for good when it comes to looking after the planet. Water is such a precious resource and climate change is contributing to higher levels of rainfall, so we’re really excited to have revived this relic of the site’s horticultural past, while reducing our own impact on the environment as a business.”

The Victorian brick-lined well is one of many discoveries that Mike and Louise have uncovered during their 35 years on the site. With tumbled down cold frames, Victorian greenhouses and underground tunnels carrying heating pipes among their recent finds, they plan to excavate further to reveal more of the garden centre’s horticultural history in the months and years to come.

Will Armitage, Jackie Eades and Conna Powles have launched Mulch. Ltd, a company formed to carefully curate a range of high quality, performance led and sensibly sourced gardening products.

The initial product offering is a range of quality gardening tools and boutique style gardening gloves.

Will Armitage, Operations Director and Head Gardener, explained to GTN Xtra: "Our tools are designed and finished in the UK using clever people who have been making tools for high end corporations for many years and they are built to last.   We're not using stainless steel as that bends too much and they are forged as one piece of carbon steel so there are no weak welding points.

"We intend for our tools to be handed down, generation on generation, as they used to be."

Jackie Eades, Sales Director and Conversation Starter, said: "The Mulch. Ltd range of products has been designed to complement existing retail offerings, often sitting alongside current ranges, to provide the consumer with a good quality and responsibly sourced option.  The range is designed with niche appeal and, as a boutique brand, we are serious about our products, but we like to have fun with the branding to engage the customer."

Will, who was formerly Managing Director of Armitages Garden Centres and Past Chairman of the GCA, and Jackie, formerly of Briers and Fallen Fruits, are joined in the new venture by Conna Powles who was previously Buying Director at Haskins Garden Centres and Hobbycraft and Adam Bamforth formerly of Magic Rock Brewing Company and KPMG.

LAVA-LITE shortlisted for StartUp Awards National Series

Nottingham-based Lava-Lite has been named one of the most exciting new businesses in the region after being shortlisted as part of a new awards programme...

Nottingham-based Lava-Lite has been named one of the most exciting new businesses in the region after being shortlisted as part of a new awards programme.

The StartUp Awards National Series has been launched to recognise the booming startup scene across the UK which has accelerated since the pandemic began. In 2020, when most of the world was shutting down, more than 400,000 startups were set up in Britain, with similar increases seen in other European countries.

There was stiff competition with over 2,500 applications received in response to the Startup Awards National Series’ first-ever call for entries.

Dominic & Kieron Tompkin, founders of Lava-Lite said: “ As you can imagine we are thrilled that our company has been shortlisted, against such an overwhelming amount of competition.”

Supported nationally by BT, EY, Dell & Intel, the programme will celebrate the achievements of the amazing individuals across the UK who have turned an idea into an opportunity and taken the risk to launch a new product or service.

Co-founded by the team behind the Great British Entrepreneur Awards, the new series follows the success of the Wales StartUp Awards, after organisers recognised the exceptional potential in the startup scene across the other British regions.

Professor Dylan Jones-Evans OBE, the creator of the StartUp Awards National Series, said: “New firms are important for generating economic prosperity, employment opportunities and innovation. Since 2016, the Wales StartUp Awards have celebrated this amazing annual contribution to our economy by entrepreneurs and the impact they have on communities across the nation.

“Given the sheer volume of phenomenal startups we’ve heard from since then, as well as the huge post-pandemic shift in people’s desires to take their career in a new direction and set up a business against the odds, we felt it was the right time to take the programme nationwide. We’ve been blown away by the standard of entries in this first year and truly look forward to crowning the winners in June.”

MP Michael Gove hears of challenges for horticulture on visit to North Hill Nurseries

North Hill Nurseries in Chobham hosted their local MP and Secretary of State for Levelling Up and Housing and Communities, Michael Gove, this week for a visit that brought to life a range of current issues being faced by horticultural businesses across the country...

North Hill Nurseries in Chobham hosted their local MP and Secretary of State for Levelling Up and Housing and Communities, Michael Gove, this week for a visit that brought to life a range of current issues being faced by horticultural businesses across the country.

Arranged by North Hill’s Managing Director, Simon Edwards, with help from the HTA, the visit enabled Simon to highlight the additional trade challenges that the business has experienced since the UK left the European Union. He echoed the concerns of many in the horticulture sector over plant imports going into Border Check Points and the delays to the transit of highly perishable goods that this will inevitably cause.

The ongoing skills and labour shortages in the industry were also a topic of discussion. The HTA have been working to engage government on this issue to find reasonable solutions for members such as expanding the Seasonal Workers Scheme.

Minister Michael Gove commented: "I was very grateful to Simon Edwards, Manager of North Hill Nurseries in Chobham, for giving me a tour of his business. Simon is a true expert on the horticulture industry, and it was really helpful to hear his thoughts on what more the Government can do to support the sector."

HTA Public Affairs & Policy Manager, David Lydiat, was in attendance and spoke with the Minister about the issues facing businesses across the sector.

He said: “We were pleased to welcome Mr Gove; the gardening and horticulture industry underpins 50 per cent of the 25-year Environmental plan, which the Minister himself led and published. We spoke about the significant economic and health contributions being made by the horticulture industry and the Minister acknowledged the importance of horticulture in relation to the environment - key elements to consider in the levelling up agenda.

“Importantly we also raised our concerns over the current and upcoming regulation burden that our members are facing – this is leading to a cost of doing business crisis. It is essential that the government act to mitigate state interference that negatively impacts our industry.”

Perrywood Garden Centre 'PLANT HOPE'!

Perrywood Garden Centre chose 'Plant Hope' as their in store theme this year. They recognise that we are all becoming much more conscious of the importance of protecting our environment, and aim to help customers find little ways to shop and garden more sustainably to help change for a better future.

As part of the Plant Hope campaign, Perrywood recently asked customers to complete a survey titled 'How Sustainable are You?'. The survey received well over 600 responses, which on review showed some very interesting and positive results.

The survey asked a number of shopping and gardening related questions such as 'Have you tried peat-free compost?', 'Do you grow your own fruit and vegetables?' and 'Do you take your own bag when shopping at Perrywood?'. Customers were also given the opportunity to answer the question  "is there anything you’d like us to do, to help you become more sustainable?"

The survey highlighted that:

  • Nearly 70% of Perrywood customers have already switched to peat-free compost or would love to give it a try. (Historically peat was the main ingredient of most composts, it’s extraction is very detrimental to the environment).
  • 62% of customers have a water butt and use it to water their plants, which helps to conserve precious water supplies.
  • Over 50% of customers have tried growing their own vegetables and find eating and sharing the harvest rewarding.

Senior Communications Manager, explains "We are delighted with the fantastic response, this enables us to get an accurate view of how sustainable our customers are and, more importantly, identify which areas we can focus on to help improve this in the future.

The survey results were very positive; we feel optimistic that our 'Plant Hope' campaign is succeeding in helping our customers find little ways to shop and garden more sustainably.

A simple way for many of us to start at home is to think about little ways we can be more sustainable in the garden. Gardening provides a brilliant boost to our mental health too, so it’s a positive all round."

Dobbies will be planting 500 trees and 100 metres of hedgerows across the UK, as part of its partnership with The Tree Council, formed in celebration of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

This commitment from Dobbies, alongside 69 like-minded and green–hearted partners, will see over 35,000 trees and 7 kilometres of hedgerows planted across the country.

Planting will take place during the 2022/23 tree planting season. The initiative will bring benefits to the environment by supporting biodiversity and wildlife, and local communities including schools and young people will enjoy greater opportunities to connect with nature and improve their mental health and wellbeing.

The Tree Council is an official Delivery Partner of The Queen’s Green Canopy and has launched the Jubilee Partners initiative to enable companies to come together to plant trees in celebration of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Graeme Jenkins, CEO at Dobbies, said: “This initiative from The Tree Council demonstrates the power of collective impact when it comes to environmental outcomes, and it is something we are proud to be part of as we look towards the Jubilee celebrations.

“Sustainable practices and caring for the environment are at the top of our agenda, and Dobbies is committed to driving positive change. In working with The Tree Council, we are happy to be playing a part by increasing the number of green spaces across the UK, bringing benefits to local communities across the country.”

Sara Lom, Chief Executive, The Tree Council, said: “We are delighted to partner with Dobbies through our Jubilee Partners programme, in celebration of The Queen’s Green Canopy and Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee this year.

“Thanks to Dobbies and our other inspiring Jubilee Partners, we will be planting and caring for an amazing 35,000 trees and 7 kilometres of hedgerow to mark The Queen’s 70 years on the throne. The trees will be planted by our network of thousands of schools, community groups and volunteers across the UK, bringing local communities together to tackle climate change, enhance biodiversity and help safeguard the wellbeing of the planet.”

The return of spoga+gafa in Cologne on its new dates of 19-21 June, when sustainability will be a key theme, is producing a high level of interest internationally from both exhibitors and visitors...

Three months before the trade fair opens, the number of exhibiting countries is similar to the level of the record year in 2019.

European companies have significantly increased their exhibition space, proof that the new date in June is going down well with exhibitors.

As expected, the participation of Asiatic exhibitors is reserved due to the entry and exit regulations still applicable in Asia. Asiatic manufacturers with European subsidiaries will however form an integral part of the trade fair and, like their fellow competitors worldwide, they too are showing interest in additional exhibition space.

The event programme of spoga+gafa is setting new accents, such as for example the lecture programme with its a clear focus on the current challenges of the industry (keywords: supply chains, eCommerce).

Special events accentuating individual products include the Boulevard of Ideas and the Outdoor Lifestyle Trend Show with its focal themes: Sustainability, Urbanisation, the Silver Society and Individualisation.

The theme of the trade fair is more important than ever  – Sustainable Gardens.  Among others, guided tours across the whole grounds will highlight products and solutions that support the garden on its way to a more sustainable existence.

The launch of the year-round digital platform of spoga+gafa, which introduces products and people to each other 365 days a year and thus heralds the start of the order process, is eagerly awaited.

The in-person events are complemented by ambista, the online business network for the international interiors industry, which provides direct anywhere, anytime access to relevant products, contacts, expertise and events.

First UKAS accreditations under Compost Certification Scheme

The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) has awarded the first accreditations under Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd (REAL)’s Compost Certification Scheme (CCS)...

The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) has awarded the first accreditations under Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd (REAL)’s Compost Certification Scheme (CCS).

Following the successful conclusion of a 12-month pilot assessment programme, three certification bodies have been granted UKAS accreditation against both REAL’s CCS and the internationally recognised ISO/IEC 17065 product certification standard:

  • Aardvark Certification Ltd
  • NSF Certification Ltd
  • Organic Farmers & Growers CIC

First conceived in 2007, the CCS has been developed by REAL as a quality assurance and end-of-waste scheme for compost derived from (predominantly green) waste materials that is used in the farming, horticulture, and growing-medium manufacturing industries.  In addition to allowing compost producers to achieve end-of-waste status for their products, goods bearing the CCS conformity mark have proved that they meet stringent quality criteria and do not harm the environment.  The CCS provides a framework for the independent assessment and certification of compost to PAS 100, the Compost Quality Protocol, and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency’s regulatory position statement on composting[1].

Announcing the awards, Justyna Staff, Head of Certification Schemes at REAL said: “Congratulations to the three certification bodies who all successfully completed the pilot programme and are now accredited to ISO/IEC 17065 for certifying against the CCS requirements.  Accreditation by UKAS reflects the competence, impartiality, and performance capability of these organisations, while also demonstrating the CCS provides reliable services to industry.  We are extremely proud that the Scheme has reached this important milestone in its development – all CCS certificates are now UKAS accredited, which will give consumers even greater assurance that they are receiving a reliable, quality product.”

On receipt of its accreditation, Roger Kerr, CEO of Organic Farmers & Growers said: “Compost certification has been an integral part of our quality management system evaluation portfolio for a number of years.  We are extremely pleased to now have official, independent recognition of the Compost Certification Scheme within our scope of UKAS accredited certification services.”

Commenting on the confidence its accreditation will bring Alison Peet, Quality Manager EMEA for NSF International said:  “Being a UKAS accredited certification body provides reassurance to our customers that their certification body has the right people and processes in place to perform competent, consistent and impartial certification.  Certification for the Compost Certification Scheme gives scheme members confidence in their product to their customers and stakeholders.“

Acknowledging both the considerable efforts involved and significance of these accreditations Gillian Manniex, UKAS Development Project Manager said: “Well done to REAL for establishing the Compost Certification Scheme and congratulations to the certification bodies on achieving accreditation to ISO 17065 for certifying against CCS requirements.  A great deal of expertise, time and hard work has been put into reaching this goal by everyone involved.  Accredited certification to the CCS helps compost manufacturers meet end-of-waste regulatory requirements across the UK, whilst simultaneously raising quality standards within the industry.  It also provides customers with a vital independent assurance over the potential impact on the environment of using CCS certified composting products.”

For further information about the Compost Certification Scheme, including the benefits of participation, contact info@realschemes.org.uk .  To discuss development of accreditable schemes and standards across a wide range of industry sectors contact the UKAS Development Team: DevelopmentEnquiries@ukas.com

Eden Project apprentices send recycling message

The Eden Project is once again at the Cornwall Garden Society’s annual Spring Flower Show, taking place at the Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge, this weekend after a two-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic...

The Eden Project is once again at the Cornwall Garden Society’s annual Spring Flower Show, taking place at the Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge, this weekend after a two-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Each year, Eden’s apprentices are set a challenge of creating a show garden with a theme, this year being “recycle, reuse, reimagine”, using primarily components found at Eden. It’s an opportunity for the team of four apprentices to shine and showcase all that they’ve learned.

This year’s garden represents a primary school garden that would be enjoyed by children and pollinators alike, including bug hotels, wildlife habitats, living walls, colourful seating, a raised vegetable bed, composting, water collection and a child-sized play tunnel. Plants include a sensory mix of lily of the valley, colourful blooms of daffodils, soft fury-leafed salvias, gently swaying grasses and insect-friendly pollen providers.

Up to five apprentices join the Eden Project horticulture team each year for a two-year stint, working across the 30-acre Outdoor Gardens, the world-famous Biomes and the wider surrounding Estate.

Yasmin McNeil, Richard Viles, Vicky Carter and Nile Maskell are the team going for gold at this year’s Spring Flower Show, led by Living Landscapes Technician Flo Mansbridge and Living Landscapes Manager Julie Kendall.

Flo Mansbridge says: “It’s wonderful for the apprentices to be able to showcase their talents at such a prestigious show. It’s a great challenge for the team, to work together, compromise and conceive how their ideas can be transported from paper to a 4D 4m by 5m garden. It creates a real sense of pride and achievement.

“Our apprenticeships give people the opportunity to work and learn across all the various unique terrain and climates that the Eden Project offers and several have gone on to continue working with us after completing their two-year course.”

Cornwall Garden Society’s Spring Flower Show is a showcase of the best nurseries, traders and landscape artists and has been held annually for more than 100 years.

The HTA Ornamentals Technical Committee (OTC) met for the first time this week at Horticulture House. An intensive agenda and active participation by committee members generated immediate gains.

Topics for the planned HTA workshops this year were prioritised and included nutrient and water management of peat-free substrates, propagation in peat-free substrates, review and demonstration of biostimulant use, herbicide tolerance in container-grown herbaceous and hardy nursery stock, improving nursery water efficiency, non-chemical weed control in field-grown crops and autumn potting deadlines and effects of late potting on overwintering and pathogen susceptibility. These will be developed and delivered over the next 9-10 months.

Support was also provided to the new ‘Nursery Network’ discussion group, which will be open to all HTA grower members. The ‘Nursery Network’ will be chaired by David Hide, Technical Manager at Fleurie Nursery, and will initially consist of a nursery-based summer visit and winter technical meeting, providing the opportunity for growers to network and exchange ideas.

The Committee also worked on updating a water audit pro forma for nurseries, the ambition being to offer an online self-assessment to quantify nursery water use efficiency in areas such as water sources used, storage, application efficiency and environmental responsibilities, and then to benchmark results against other similar nurseries.

Presentations to the Committee were also made by Jo McTigue, AHDB Crop Protection Officer, on EAMU applications and AHDB funded crop protection R&D projects, David Denny, HTA Director of Research and Insights, on the current situation with peat use in growing media and Sally Cullimore, HTA Technical Policy Manager, on importing and plant biosecurity.

The OTC consists of - Ed Holmes, J&A Growers (Chair); Rob Richardson, Johnsons of Whixley; Vicky Endersby, Osberton Nurseries; David Malcolm, Worfield Plants; Imam Sayyed, Trees Please; James Durnford, Allensmore Nurseries; Andy Bean, O.A Taylor & Sons Bulbs; Aaron Bicknell, Double H Nurseries; Mark Creighton, Farplants; Karl O’Neill, Bransford Garden Plants; Kyle Ross, Wyevale Nurseries; Ben Shaw, Newey; Jo Fell, Hilliers and Ivelina Karastoyanova, Darby Nursery Stock.

This year Smiemans will build a 7,250 mgarden centre in Reykjavík. The international architectural firm PK Arkitektar has designed this mega project. The large shop windows, the green roof, the vertical wooden blinds and the architectural facade with continuous canopies give the garden centre the biophilic look that suits the company.

In the middle of the 90-metre-wide building with asymmetrical roofs, a central hall of 25 meters wide and 12 meters high with a mezzanine floor will be realized. This floor will mainly contain offices, canteen and social areas for staff. The garden centre will have a fully catered restaurant and attractive shop-in-shops. A roof along the facade of the outside area ensures that customers can shop comfortably even in bad weather. The warehouse is equipped with a green roof. This stockroom will house a sales point of Stihl, manufacturer of heavy garden tools.

Because the weather conditions in Iceland are more extreme, all materials have been adapted to make the construction climate-resistant and energy-efficient. Sound-absorbing material must limit the noise nuisance from the adjacent busy road.

With this project, a long-cherished dream comes true for the Icelandic family who have been running the existing Garðheimar garden centre for two generations. In a new to be developed area near the capital, the first work has already been started for the largest garden centre in Iceland.

John W Herbert to receive global DIY-lifetime award

John W. Herbert, has been selected to receive the industry’s Global DIY Lifetime Award 2022 to be presented during the Gala Dinner on the 9th of June 2022 at the Global DIY Summit in Copenhagen...

The Board of the European DIY Retail Association (EDRA), the Home Improvement Manufacturers Association (HIMA) and the Global Home Improvement Network (GHIN) are delighted to announce that industry veteran, John W. Herbert, has been selected to receive the industry’s Global DIY Lifetime Award 2022 to be presented during the Gala Dinner on the 9th of June 2022 at the Global DIY Summit in Copenhagen.

John W. Herbert has been in retailing since 1956, for an incredible 66 years, and in the home improvement and DIY industry since 1983. He was the Managing Director of the family-owned Knauber chain for 17 years, until 2000. In 1993 Knauber was named as one of the “World Stores” in the then internationally recognised US Home Centre News Magazine. In 2001 John was appointed President of The Home Depot EXPO Design Center for the West Coast of America.

In 2002 John returned to Germany as Managing Director of the BHB and became co-founder of EDRA. He has been at the helm of the international association since 2004, also founding GHIN in 2015, and making 440 journeys to almost every significant home improvement company around the world in this time. EDRA/GHIN would not be where is it today, representing the entire spectrum of the home improvement industry with 219 members, if not for “the great communicator”, as highlighted by DIY International.

On receiving the news that the respective Boards of EDRA/GHIN and HIMA would be awarding the Global DIY Lifetime Award to him, John stated, “I am honoured to receive this great accolade at the reunion of the industry after two difficult years of not meeting face-to-face.”  Sergio Giroldi, President of EDRA/GHIN, emphasized this decision by affirming that “John’s contribution to the industry is incomparable and I really appreciate his dedication in bringing together the international community of home improvement.”

Reinhard Wolff, President of HIMA, welcomed the decision and said “I have always regarded John as an inspiring person, dedicated to his work, confident and dynamic and all with his incomparable British humour.”

King opens Floriade Expo 2022 in Amsterdam

Willem-Alexander, King of the Netherlands, will open the international horticulture exhibition Floriade Expo 2022 on the afternoon of Wednesday 13 April in Almere...

Willem-Alexander, King of the Netherlands, will open the international horticulture exhibition Floriade Expo 2022 on the afternoon of Wednesday 13 April in Almere.

With its theme ‘Growing Green Cities’ Floriade focuses on making cities more fun, liveable and sustainable. To this end, the Dutch horticulture sector, in conjunction with 400 (inter)national participants, including 33 countries, will present its innovative ideas and solutions.

The Floriade park is based on the arboretum designed by landscape architect Winy Maas. This collection of trees, bulbs, perennials and shrubs that visitors can walk through has been planted alphabetically. At The Green House visitors can see what flowers, plants, vegetables and fruit entail for consumers and society as a whole. Crop cultivation using innovations including drones, robots and vertical horticulture will be showcased.

The Dutch Innovation Experience, the government’s pavilion, will focus on the future of sustainable, circular housing construction. The pavilion was built from hundreds of bio-based materials including timber, straw, reeds, rubber, cattails, paprika stems and mycelium. Floriade is also home to ornamental gardens and pavilions from countries in Europe, Africa, America and Asia.

Visitors can cross the site using the cable car, an example of sustainable transport. Amsterdam and Almere’s ‘The Voice of Urban Nature’ pavilion shows how, together with inhabitants, they are working on the green cities of the future. M. is Flevoland’s new pavilion  for immersive art. Floriade also has an extensive art and culture programme.

The international horticulture exhibition is held once a decade in the Netherlands. This edition in Almere is the 7th Floriade and was organised in cooperation with the Nederlandse Tuinbouwraad (NTR), the national government, the Provincial Government of Flevoland and the Municipality of Almere.  After Floriade Expo 2022 is over, the site will be turned into a green, low-car-traffic, urban district.

Floriade Expo 2022

For six months, from 14 April 2022 until 9 October 2022, Almere (NL) will be the stage for the International Horticultural Exhibition Floriade Expo 2022. During the Floriade, the Dutch horticulture sector, together with national and international partners, will show green solutions that can make our cities more fun, liveable and sustainable.

The theme of “Growing Green Cities” is central on the 60-hectare site. The exhibition grounds are a short travel distance from Amsterdam and directly alongside the A6 with a view of the Almere skyline.

Eye-catching with Seedball's Grab Bags

Wildflower specialist, Seedball, has launched a newly designed ‘grab bag’ for trade customers with an eye-catching look to help inspire shoppers to take hold of the idea that sowing a wildflower garden needn’t be hard work...

Wildflower specialist, Seedball, has launched a newly designed ‘grab bag’ for trade customers with an eye-catching look to help inspire shoppers to take hold of the idea that sowing a wildflower garden needn’t be hard work.

Ideal for anywhere, no matter the size of the outdoor space, but particularly ideal for those larger gardens, the new designs make the packs easy to spot and hard to ignore.

Multi-award winning, Seedball, created by two conservation scientists, aims to help to fill our gardens, balconies and window boxes with native wildflowers, bees and butterflies.

Native wildflowers are naturally slow to germinate, and as such, loosely scattered seed can often be eaten by ants, birds and mice. Seedball helps to solve this problem by encasing the seed in a protective ball of clay, compost and chilli.

Each Seedball Grab Bag contains 100 seedballs, which is enough to cover five square meter in a garden bed or 15 to 25 medium sized pots adding in plenty of burst of colour through gardens.

The new design is available on the Bee Mix, Butterfly Mix and Wildlife Mix, all carefully selected specifically to attract the intended wildlife.

RHS Flower shows help Cancer Research UK bloom through pandemic

The largest funder of cancer research in Europe, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) has seen its long-term garden sponsorship of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) continue to pay off with an increase in engagement over the last 12 months...

The largest funder of cancer research in Europe, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) has seen its long-term garden sponsorship of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) continue to pay off with an increase in engagement over the last 12 months.

CRUK first started working with the RHS over 10 years ago however, over the last 12 months the cancer research charity increased its focus on developing its legacy messaging. Last year CRUK saw success through sponsoring show gardens at the prestigious RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival and RHS Flower Show Tatton Park.

The big challenge CRUK faced in 2021 was having almost all its in-person events and engagement activities put on hold due to the pandemic. Forced to use remote and digital marketing strategies to engage with its supporters, the charity looked to the RHS shows to help complement its other marketing channels and optimise the outcome during what was an extremely challenging year for many charities.

Sam Devlin, Head of Legacy Product at CRUK, said: “Although digital marketing activities play an important role in our marketing and engagement plans, it does not substitute meaningful face to face conversations, especially when you can treat your supporters to an amazing experience at the same time.

“The RHS is an established organisation with a renowned programme of events that attracts visitors who are closely aligned to our audience. The shows allowed us to reach this audience in an enjoyable, leisurely environment.”

CRUK’s Legacy Garden, designed by the innovative young designer Tom Simpson for RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, won a hat-trick of awards, including the RHS Gold Medal, Best in Show, and Best Construction. It represented the duality between CRUK’s legacy supporters and researchers who together will help to beat cancer. Whilst the charity’s Legacy Garden at RHS Tatton Park Flower Show, designed by Neil Sutcliffe, was a peaceful and immersive space inspired by a Greek proverb, ‘A Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they shall never sit in.’

The charity has seen legacy giving awareness and consideration increase significantly, with more people leaving a gift in their will and show visitors engaging with their garden, leading to meaningful conversations.

Devlin continued: “RHS shows have allowed us to build on this consideration by telling the story of our life-saving research through the show garden design. Working closely with the best garden designers helps get our message across in a clever, engaging and sensitive way.

“We are now looking at how we build on our relationship with the RHS even further, aiming to work more collaboratively with other like-minded charities to amplify our messaging. We want to appear at more shows across the UK creating unique and engaging experiences in an innovative way.”

Helena Pettit, RHS Director of Shows and Gardens, said: “Our RHS shows provide a unique platform for charities and other organisations to promote their brands to large audiences. Sponsoring a garden is an excellent way of engaging people with your messaging because it allows you to tell your story in a beautiful way through plants. As a charity, our RHS shows and the publicity around them are vital in helping us promote our own charitable work and for fundraising purposes.

“Over the last two years, there has been a gardening boom with people of all ages now interested in horticulture. This has opened up huge opportunities for our sponsors to capitalise on this increased interest in gardening and target a range of demographics that they may not be able to do through other channels. We’re delighted at the success CRUK has had through working with us, and are proud to have supported them through a challenging time to create meaningful experiences for their supporters.”

Garden retailer reveals expansion plans following funding

Screen With Envy, an online retailer of decorative garden and indoor screens, fences and gates, has unveiled further international expansion plans following its refinancing with Santander UK...

Screen With Envy, an online retailer of decorative garden and indoor screens, fences and gates, has unveiled further international expansion plans following its refinancing with Santander UK.

Santander UK has provided Screen With Envy a £3.75m funding package, including a Growth Capital loan.1 The innovative funding product provides the business with flexibility to reinvest its profits in working capital and growing the business.

The funding package enables the Aylesbury-headquartered business to refinance existing debt, frees up its cashflow and supports it with importing materials from overseas used in the production of its products.

Screen With Envy was founded in 2017 by Sophie Birkert, who began designing decorative garden screens when she identified a gap in the market for products that were stylish, decorative and durable. At the time she founded the company, she was pregnant with her third child and decided she would turn her hand to running her own business rather than return to her demanding job in the City of London. Five years on, Screen With Envy has a multi-million pound annual revenue, which has grown by more than 800% over the past two years, and employs a staff of 73.

The business sells its products exclusively through its website and, in addition to growing its business in the UK, it is working to increase sales internationally, with a focus on the US and Europe. Having established a subsidiary in the Netherlands and a warehouse in Venlo in 2020, it is well placed to bolster sales on the Continent, particularly in Germany and France. Offering an extended range of complementary products and ramping up digital marketing and social media advertising to increase brand awareness are central to the business’ growth plans.

Screen With Envy offers a range of some 200 products including garden screens, fences and gates, and indoor accessories and furniture such as radiator covers, tables and pet gates. Sophie Birkert designs all of Screen With Envy’s products and they are crafted with an advanced wood composite material, which has the look and feel of wood but is lighter and has enhanced durability, giving the products a life of up to 20 years. The company has been a pioneering adopter of the wood composite material, which is made from wood offcuts and recycled plastic, in decorative screening due to its lighter environmental impact and benefits to customers.

Sophie Birkert, Founder of Screen With Envy, said: “With Santander UK, we have found the support and growth aspiration we would look for from an equity partner but without the dilution – it’s the kind of partner all growing businesses need. We look forward to growing our business, with the support of Santander UK, into the UK's biggest and most successful retailer of own-design screening, fencing and partitioning."

David Muse, Growth Capital Director at Santander UK, said: “We are delighted to become Screen With Envy’s’ banking partner, supporting the next phase of its growth strategy. Our flexible funding package, combining Growth Capital and trade finance facilities, as well as our international support solutions, will help this fast-growing British company to expand worldwide through investment in stock, new hires, and overseas trade infrastructure.”

Squire’s Garden Centres report a strong rebound

Squire’s Garden Centres have filed their annual accounts for the year ending 31 July 2021 with Companies House. Chairman Sarah Squire commented: “I am full of admiration for my amazing colleagues throughout the business, who worked so tirelessly in a constantly changing landscape throughout FY2021.”

Squire’s Garden Centres have filed their annual accounts for the year ending 31 July 2021 with Companies House.

Chairman of Squire’s Sarah Squire commented; “I am full of admiration for my amazing colleagues throughout the business, who worked so tirelessly in a constantly changing landscape throughout FY2021.”

More than ever, this year’s results should not be read in isolation. Squire’s previous year’s results were negatively impacted by the effects of lockdown due to Covid-19. Their results for year ending 31 July 2021 have also been impacted by the epidemic, but in very different ways. In FY2021 whole company turnover was £69.5m. This was an increase of 31% on FY2020. Squire’s anticipate a return to more normal patterns of trading and profitability for 2022, above FY2019 but unlikely to match FY2021, which has to be regarded as exceptional. Their profit before tax rose to £8.0m in FY2021 (2020: £2.2m) with relatively low capital expenditure.

Demand for plants and horticultural products at Squire’s remained very strong in FY2021, as people sought solace and enjoyment from their outside space, and engaged in gardening as a healthy and restorative activity while at home. Customers also wanted to create welcoming and attractive outdoor areas for relaxing and entertaining, and this favourably affected sales of garden furniture, barbeques and garden décor.

“Supply was challenging in some categories,” adds Sarah, “but our buyers did very well to maintain stock availability through a volatile period in the supply chain.”

Squire’s Café Bars were affected by lockdowns two and three, and there were challenges in staff recruitment that were felt throughout the hospitality industry.

“We have retained the table service model introduced on re-opening; this is a point of difference and a way of repositioning our dining experience,” commented Sarah. “We have also introduced a new IT system aimed at improving stock management, speed of service and meal quality.”

The call and deliver service that Squire’s developed during lockdown one has been transformed into their new e-commerce offering.

“We offer local delivery on an increasing number of plants and other products and are pleased with the steady development of this channel,” adds Sarah. “We are carefully testing and learning as we go, focusing on customer service.”

Squire’s key post year end project has been at Wokingham: enlarging the Café Bar, re-fitting the kitchen, and expanding the Food Hall, which now occupies areas previously let to clothing concessions. They are also looking forward to continue working on their sustainability programme, and remain committed to their charitable and community involvement.

“Looking forward we see some short/medium-term availability and cost challenges in our supply chain, and further cost pressures in energy, transport and employment, not helped by current shocking geopolitical events,” says Sarah. “However, we believe that the public has reconnected with gardening and we (and our industry as a whole) have the opportunity to encourage people to garden and continue to enjoy their outside space. With responsible, prudent, and thoughtful management, the support of our talented and committed teams, and the continued goodwill of our customers and suppliers, we view the future with confidence.”

Of course, Huw will also be recommending the best Spear & Jackson Garden hand tools for the job and showing how to use them on the vegetable plot and in the garden.

Spear and Jackson Managing Director, Ian Archer, says “We are delighted to be working with Huw as our Brand Ambassador, his passion and enthusiasm for growing is evident and we share his ethical approach to organic growing and sustainability. We look forward to working with Huw and to being involved in some of the exciting projects that he has in the pipeline for the year ahead."

Huw said “I am very excited to be partnering with such a well-known and trusted brand as Spear and Jackson. It’s going to be a busy year, and I can’t wait to start sharing my ideas and inspiring as many like-minded growing enthusiasts as possible through this new partnership.”
