British Garden Centres acquires Dobbies Gloucester and Reading stores

British Garden Centres has today announced the acquisition of two Dobbies Garden Centres in Gloucester and Reading, making it the UK’s largest garden centre operator by number of sites.

This strategic move marks a significant milestone for the business. It further solidifies its position as the UK’s largest family-run garden centre group, taking the portfolio to 67 stores.

The two stores will join the British Garden Centres family following the Dobbies Restructuring Plan (RP) and hope to open in mid to late February. The Reading store will take the name Shinfield Garden Centre to better reflect the area and local community.

The immediate priority is to work closely with the existing teams to restock and reopen the centres as soon as possible. British Garden Centres will be retaining all existing centre team members and look forward to working with them to ensure the continued success of these sites in the local communities they serve.  Extra roles at each centre will be posted on the British Garden Centres website  https://www.britishgardencentres.com/careers/ and the Facebook and Instagram pages of each centre.

Charles Stubbs, Founder and Director of British Garden Centres said: “We are thrilled to announce the addition of two fantastic garden centres to the British Garden Centres family. This marks a significant milestone for the group, as the acquisition of these former Dobbies stores cements us as the largest garden centre group in the UK by stores. We have a clear vision for the growth of these centres and are excited to integrate with the local communities while building on the strong foundations that are already in place.

Further acquisitions of Dobbies sites by British Garden Centres are likely to follow.

Hillier Garden Centres' Retail & Wholesale Director, Chris Francis, will be stepping down from his role in the summer of 2025. Chris plans to focus on spending more time with family, pursuing travel ambitions, and of course more time in his own garden, alongside any other business opportunities that may arise.

Chris joined Hillier in March 2014 as Garden Centre Director and, shortly after, took on the additional role of Wholesale Nursery Director. Over the course of a decade, he played a pivotal role in transforming the business, building a skilled senior team, and driving the expansion of the garden centres from 12 to 22 locations. Notably, he also spearheaded the launch of an online shop in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, Hillier experienced remarkable growth in both sales and profit.

George Hillier, Chairman of Hillier Nurseries, said, “Chris’ passion for the industry, business acumen, and team leadership have had a significant and lasting impact on our business over the past decade. He has helped embed the Hillier brand in our communities and ensured Hillier stays true to its roots, continuing to provide high-quality plants and gardening products, while maintaining the excellent customer service that reflects our family values. We will all miss him very much and wish him all the very best.”

Chris Francis shared, "It has been an immense privilege to work for such a renowned and respected horticultural business, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have spent the last decade of my career alongside such a talented and dedicated team. The work we’ve done together, especially on exciting new garden centre launches, garden shows and how we came together to get through the pandemic, has been extremely rewarding. I will certainly miss many things at Hillier and will always have a passion for this industry!"

Chris has dedicated over 30 years to the horticulture industry, with experience at companies such as The Garden Centre Group and Wyevale as well as Hillier. Prior to his career in horticulture, he spent many successful years in the retail sector with John Lewis, where he honed his skills in retail management.

Hillier is now looking for a Retail Director to build on its successful foundations and to continue its trajectory of growth and development, while also innovating for the future.

Resolva ‘Win A Car’ promotion winner drives away in style

Resolva, part of Westland Horticulture, handed over the keys to a brand new electric Mini Cooper on Thursday, 9th January, to the lucky winner of its ‘Win A Car’ promotion.

The community of Blackpool celebrated at The Plant Place Garden Centre in Thornton-Cleveleys as local resident, Anne Emery, drove away in style in her brand new electric Mini Cooper, worth £32,500, thanks to Resolva.

Resolva’s highly successful in-store ‘Win A Car’ promotion attracted thousands of entrants and drove sales of the brand’s popular range of weedkillers. The promotion ran throughout spring and summer 2024 at garden centres across the UK and Ireland, giving shoppers the chance to win a brand new electric Mini Cooper in the prize draw.

Upon receiving her new car, Anne shared her joy: "I couldn’t believe it when I found out I’d won! I’ve always been a huge fan of Resolva products because I love spending time in my garden, but I’m not a fan of the backbreaking work involved in keeping on top of weeds. This car is an absolute dream – it’s not just about the prize, it’s about the freedom it gives me to explore new places and spend more time doing what I love. I feel incredibly lucky!"

The celebration was equally thrilling for George Pitcher, Brand Manager, at Westland, who attended the event to personally congratulate winner Anne. He added: "Resolva is all about giving gardeners the freedom to enjoy their outdoor spaces without the time-consuming burden of constant weeding, and now we’re delighted to extend that freedom to easy, eco-conscious travel. We’re so happy for Anne – her excitement is contagious, and it’s a pleasure to see the impact this prize will have on her life."

The promotion highlighted Resolva’s mission to support both gardeners in helping them create an outdoor space that always looks its best, as well as its retail partners, by driving customers in-store to pick up a bottle of Resolva and enter the prize draw. Whether it’s a quick spot fix or there’s a larger area to tackle, Resolva has proven to be a reliable ally for gardeners, and now one lucky customer has even more to celebrate. As well as the grand prize of an electric Mini Cooper, runner up prizes were given away, including holidays, and garden centre staff were also rewarded with chocolate hampers for their in-store displays.

Kate Ebbens raises over £30,000 for the Greenfingers Charity with year-long fundraising efforts

Kate Ebbens has successfully raised over £30,000 for the Greenfingers Charity through her relentless fundraising efforts throughout 2024...

In an awe-inspiring display of dedication and community spirit, Kate Ebbens has successfully raised over £30,000 for the Greenfingers Charity through her relentless fundraising efforts throughout 2024.

Kate’s commitment to supporting the children’s hospice garden charity saw her run every single day of the year – a leap-year nonetheless which saw her clock up over 1,040 miles - culminating in an extraordinary achievement that has inspired many.

Reflecting on her year of fundraising, Kate Ebbens said: “2024 has undoubtedly been one of the most challenging yet rewarding years of my life. Running every day was tough, but knowing it was making a real difference for children and families in hospices kept me going. As Greenfingers Chair Boyd Douglas-Davies recently said, two words that should never go together are ‘children’ and ‘hospice.’ This heartbreaking reality motivated me to push through, even on my hardest days.

“The incredible support I received along the way also played a huge role in keeping me going. From friends and family to colleagues, industry connections, and everyone in between, I am truly overwhelmed by the encouragement and generosity I experienced. The fundraising total is beyond anything I could have imagined.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who helped make my 2024 challenge an unforgettable journey. I am so grateful for every single contribution and act of kindness.”

In addition to her remarkable running challenge, Kate still found time to bring some holiday cheer to Keech Hospice in Bedford by organising a special ‘12 Days of Christmas’ event. Drawing on her extensive network of contacts, she gathered an impressive collection of donated products from businesses including Dobbies, Ayletts Nurseries, Yorkshire Garden Centre, Bent’s Home and Garden, Klondyke, Perrywood Garden Centre, Scotsdales, British Garden Centre Group, Ruxley Manor, Millbrook and St Peter’s Garden Centre. These donations were delivered to Keech Hospice just before Christmas, providing them with a truly magical festive gift.

Kate added: “Organising the 12 Days of Christmas event was the perfect way to end the year, and I’m so grateful to all the incredible businesses who contributed to making it such a success. Together, we’ve created something truly special for the children and families supported by Keech Hospice Care.”

The Greenfingers Charity, which supports hospices in creating beautiful outdoor spaces for children and families to enjoy, has been deeply touched by Kate’s efforts.

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications, commented: “Kate’s unwavering commitment to our cause has been truly extraordinary. Her year-long challenge has raised vital funds that will help us continue creating therapeutic gardens for children in hospices. Her efforts are a true demonstration of how much can be achieved when communities come together. On behalf of everyone here at Greenfingers, and the families we support, I want to express our deepest gratitude to Kate for her incredible efforts.”

There is still time to show your support of Kate’s fundraising efforts. Donations can be made via www.justgiving.com/page/kate-ebbens-1701443565987

Inspired by Kate – why not take up the 2025 Greenfingers Challenge!

As 2025 unfolds, the gauntlet has been thrown down, asking teams or individuals to complete a 650-mile challenge.

The 650-mile challenge symbolically connects Greenfingers HQ in Buckinghamshire to Coombe Abbey in Coventry, the venue for the charity's 25th Anniversary Floral Ball. The route virtually passes through four hospices set to benefit from Greenfingers gardens this year: Acorns Children’s Hospice in Walsall, Hope House in Oswestry, Bluebell Wood in Sheffield, and Chestnut Tree House in Arundel, celebrating the positive impact of the gardens.

Participants can take on the challenge individually or as part of a team, logging miles by running, cycling, swimming, or walking. They can complete the distance over time, tackle it in a single weekend, or adopt any approach that suits them.

If you are interested in getting involved in this very special fundraising challenge in 2025, either as an individual or as a team, please contact Linda by emailing linda@greenfingerscharity.org.uk

Southern Trident's Coco & Coir All Purpose Compost  – soon to be rebranded as Little Big Compost – has been awarded not one but two coveted Which? Best Buy awards. These accolades, published in the latest issue of Which? Gardening, confirm our compost as the leading choice for both Seedlings and Raising Young Plants.

This achievement is particularly significant because it marks the second consecutive year that Coco & Coir has earned these top distinctions. In 2023, the product was also named Best Buy in both categories, demonstrating unparalleled consistency and performance.

Which? Gardening praised the product, stating: “This compost contains pure coir with a controlled-release fertiliser which releases a trickle of fertiliser for the first few weeks. All our seedlings and plants put on impressive growth.”

Steve Harper, CEO of Southern Trident, commented on the results: “These independent trials once again highlight that coir is an exceptional growing media substrate. At Southern Trident, we are committed to producing high-quality peat-free products, and these accolades demonstrate that peat-free compost can deliver outstanding results. This recognition from Which? Gardening reinforces our mission to lead the industry in sustainable and effective growing solutions.”

While many brands claim superiority based on internal testing, Southern Trident stands apart by consistently proving its excellence through independent consumer trials. For garden retailers seeking to give their consumers the best results, Coco & Coir’s proven performance speaks for itself

Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience Director to speak at GCA conference about laughter

Delegates at the Garden Centre Association’s annual conference will hear from laughter specialist Professor Sophie Scott CBE who is Director of the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London (January 26 until 29, 2025)...

Delegates at the Garden Centre Association’s annual conference will hear from laughter specialist Professor Sophie Scott CBE who is Director of the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London (January 26 until 29, 2025).

Professor Scott studies the neurobiology of human vocal communication, from speech and sound to social interactions and non-verbal emotional expressions, such as laughter – which will be her presentation topic.

GCA Chairman, Will Blake says: “We’re thrilled to have Sophie with us this year at our 2025 conference. She’ll be presenting to members on Tuesday, January 28 about ‘Laughter & Leadership’ and it promises to be a fun and informative talk, which I’m sure everyone will heartily enjoy. Plus, the positive health benefits of laughter are scientifically proven!

“Sophie is an accomplished presenter, moderator and host, having given talks at everything from school prize-givings to being a master of ceremonies for British Science Association dinners.

“She was the 2017 Royal Institution Christmas Lecturer and was awarded the Royal Society’s Michael Faraday prize in 2021. Sophie is also a Fellow of the British Academy and the Academy of Medical Science and has published more than 130 scientific papers.

“You may have seen/heard her on TV and radio shows, as well as online too, as she’s a popular contributor. Sophie is a recognisable voice on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Infinite Monkey Cage’, host of ‘In Their Element’, the Sodium and Lithium episodes, and has appeared on the ‘Museum of Curiosity’, the ‘Third Degree’ and ‘Inside Science’.

“She also regularly stands in on the ‘Maths of Life’ feature for Lauren Laverne on Radio 6 Music. In podcasting, she co-hosts ‘The Neuromantics’, broadcast monthly on Soho Radio, and she has appeared on the podcasts for Sarah Brown and the NPR show, ‘Hidden Brain’.

“Sophie has appeared on ‘The One Show’ (BBC1) and ‘Sunday Brunch’ (C4) ‘Horizon’ (BBC2), ‘David Baddiel: Social Media, Anger and Us’ (BBC2), and has presented her work on ‘Mary Beard’s Inside Culture Show’ (BBC2).”

Sophie is an accomplished public speaker, her multiple TED talks have amassed a million views, and she has presented at the World Economic Forum, The Royal Institute and the Wired UK conference.

She has also performed science-based stand-up comedy and has appeared at the Hammersmith Apollo, the Bloomsbury Theatre and the Latitude festival.

Comedian Jimmy Carr says: “Understanding laughter is a deceptively complex business. Laughter is at the very heart of what it is to be human – our superpowers as a species are communication and co-operation and laughter is central to both.

“Laughter is the glue that holds families, tribes and societies together. Sophie Scott’s work is thought provoking, rigorous and brilliant. She’s not only finding answers, but she’s also asking questions that reveal so much about our minds and our humanity.”

Professor Sophie Scott CBE will be speaking to attendees on Tuesday, January 28 at the 2025 GCA conference and places can still be booked for the conference via Garden Centre Association Tickets, Bundles - Buy Online.

There is also a dedicated email for any queries members, and those wishing to book for the event, may have: conference@gca.org.uk.

British Garden Centres, the UK’s largest family-run group has been helping to spread the magic over the Christmas season, by asking towns around to country to nominate a community hero.

Each of the 65 centres across the UK, from Carmarthen to Ramsgate and from Wimborne to East Durham gifted a lucky local hero, hospice, charity, school, or community space a stunning light-up reindeer to brighten up the festive season.

The Christmas giveaway was a way for British Garden Centres and each store to say thank you to the incredible people who make each community shine.

Among the highlights of the community campaign was brightening the days of children at Noah's Ark Children's Hospice in Barnet from Stevenage Garden Centre, providing joy for those in need at the White Hart Community Centre in Newton Regis and Lincoln and Lindsey Blind Society in Louth.

The community heroes also included the Douglas Macmillan Hospice in Stoke-on-Trent via Bridgnorth Garden Centre and the Colchester Cancer Wellbeing and Information Centre at Stanway Garden Centre, Zoe's Place Children's Hospice in Middlesbrough at Arcadia Garden Centre to East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service at Lewes Garden Centre.

Amy Stubbs, Project and Developer Manager at British Garden Centres said: “The Community Hero Reindeer Giveaway served as a reminder of the importance of supporting local communities and making a positive difference in the lives of others.  This is close to the heart of our business and centres, and we hope the light reindeers will make a positive impact on people and the causes they serve for many years to come.”

Building on the success of their 2024 partnership, Spring Fair and Faire will empower up to 20,000 independent retailers with seamless access to brands both in person and online. Retailers will now benefit from a 12-month collaboration that allows them to source products, discover new brands, and manage orders year-round – not just during the physical trade show.

The expanded partnership coincides with Spring Fair’s 75th anniversary celebration in 2025, setting a bold vision for the future of retail.

What’s new in 2025:

  • Always-on access: Retailers and brands will now have year-round opportunities to connect and trade via Spring Fair and Faire, reflecting the 24/7 nature of modern retail.
  • Exclusive incentives: Retailers attending the show will have access to exclusive discounts and benefits, including 50% off first orders (up to £100) for new Faire users and free shipping on orders placed at the show with the code SPRINGFAIR – addressing the top pain point for retailers buying at trade events.
  • More visibility and education: Faire will have an expanded presence at Spring Fair, with a dedicated stand for brands and retailers to browse products, connect with the Faire team, and learn how to maximise the benefits of this hybrid wholesale model. In 2025, Faire will also take to the MasterClass stage to deliver expert sessions for retailers, offering insights and guidance on industry trends.

Charlotte Broadbent, UK general manager at Faire, said: "Retail never stops – and neither should the tools that support it. By extending our partnership with Spring Fair, we’re giving independent retailers the best of both worlds. They can discover, connect, and place orders online all year round – while still experiencing the magic of seeing, touching, and feeling products in person. As we mark Spring Fair’s 75th anniversary, this partnership reflects our shared vision for a more modern, connected retail industry.”

The initial collaboration in 2024 was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from retailers and brands including Kate Clark from The Post Box Gifts who said: “We went to Autumn Fair and loved getting the chance to meet the Faire team in person. Faire has completely changed the game for our business. The platform is so easy to use, with amazing products, great payment terms, and fantastic service. I’d encourage every retailer to give Faire a try and stop by their stand at Spring Fair to see what it’s all about.”

Over 200 brands are currently part of the Spring Fair collection on Faire.com, giving them more visibility to Faire’s growing global network. The joint effort has driven increased customer engagement and strengthened relationships between brands and retailers.

Jackson Szabo, Portfolio Director at Hyve Group (organiser of Spring Fair), said: "This partnership has already delivered strong results for brands and retailers alike. By extending it into 2025, we’re doubling down on the power of hybrid trading. Our exhibitors get more visibility online, while retailers can streamline their buying processes with the support of Faire’s marketplace. Together, we’re creating a more connected and future-proofed industry.”

The partnership underscores the evolving nature of the retail sector, where brands and buyers seek the perfect blend of in-person discovery and the efficiency of digital trade. With Faire’s exclusive offers, Masterclass sessions, and online collection of brands, independent retailers are better equipped than ever to navigate an increasingly competitive market.

The next Spring Fair will be held at the NEC Birmingham from 2nd - 5th February 2025. Retailers and exhibitors can access exclusive offers and connect with Faire before, during, and after the show, ensuring that the value of the trade event extends well beyond its four-day schedule.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show celebrates British Isles landscapes and champions their restoration

From the wild woodlands of a British rainforest to a loch landscape and a songbird’s safe haven, RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025 is celebrating the beautiful natural landscapes of the British Isles in this year’s All About Plants category line-up, supported by Project Giving Back.

Seawilding by Ryan McMahon will capture the spirit of Scotland’s west coast landscape, with a saltwater pool planted with seagrass, the UK’s only native ocean plant. This will be the first RHS Chelsea garden to be partially relocated to the ocean floor. The garden exclusively features plants native to the west coast of Scotland, such as globeflower, a wildflower of the Scottish wet meadows, and string sedge.

Amidst the ongoing climate crisis, The Wildlife Trusts’ British Rainforest Garden by Zoe Claymore will evoke the verdant wilderness of the rainforests that once swathed the British west coast. Reflecting a trend towards naturalistic planting and regenerative gardening, the planting utilises native shade-loving plants to boost local wildlife. Lichened silver birch trees, dense ferns, and foxgloves will feature throughout, while a striking two-metre moss wall will provide a lush backdrop for a tumbling waterfall.

A soft, countryside-inspired palette of plants features in The SongBird Survival Gardenby Nicola Oakey which highlights how gardeners can support the UK’s declining songbird population. Bird-friendly planting such as arctic bramble, grasses and yew hedges provide food, nesting material and shelter for songbirds whose population has declined by 50% in just two generations.

The Hospitalfield Arts Garden, a new addition to the show garden category, joins the homage to British landscapes with a dramatic dune topography and coastal planting inspired by the east coast of Scotland. Designed by Nigel Dunnett, who returns to RHS Chelsea for the first time since 2017, the garden features planting established in sand to demonstrate how mineral materials can be used as a growing medium to encourage more diverse plants.

From biodiversity to neurodiversity, The ADHD Foundation Garden designed by Kate Terry wraps up the All About Plants line up and is set to celebrate the uniqueness of people. A layered sensory space, the garden will feature uncommon plant varieties as well as popular plants fashioned in an unusual way to reflect the beauty of diversity.

Helena Pettit, Director of Shows, Commercial and Innovation said: “RHS Chelsea Flower Show is always an exciting opportunity for designers to offer a different perspective on garden design, and it’s lovely to see designers bring these British Isle landscapes to life across the garden categories. These designs are a wonderful example of how gardeners from all walks of life can look closer to home for beautiful and sustainable gardening inspiration.”

The gardens in the All About Plants category have a particular focus on unusual and specialist plants. The gardens in this category and The Hospitalfield Arts Garden are supported by Project Giving Back, a grant-giving charity that supports gardens for good causes at RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show runs from 20-24 May 2025 and tickets are available online at rhs.org.uk/Chelsea.

Dobbies Garden Centres has confirmed that five of its stores – Morpeth, Stapleton, Rugby, Hare Hatch and Havant – are transferring to new ownership during January. It also said that teams at each of these stores will transfer to the new operators.

This follows approval of Dobbies’ restructuring plan in December 2024, which allows the business to focus on returning to sustainable profitability, unlock access to future investment and deliver a strong and well capitalised platform for the business going forward.

Squire’s Garden Centres announced the freehold acquisition of Hare Hatch Garden Centre, a move that will safeguard jobs and secure the future of the site.

Harvey Spack Field, the specialist retail advisor, working on behalf of the landlord, KFIM, facilitated the transaction, following Dobbies Garden Centres Limited’s Restructuring Plan. The structure of the agreement allowed the transaction to conclude swiftly, which will enable Squire’s Garden Centres to assume responsibility for the site with minimal disruption.

Sarah Squire, Chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres, commented: “We have been pleased to work effectively with the landlords to agree a deal, in principle, which secures the future of this outstanding site.  We are working on this as quickly as we can and hope to announce timings in the coming days.

“We look forward to getting to know the garden centre team and working with them in the future, as well as building relationships with the local community.  We consider there is every opportunity to grow the business significantly in the next few years.”

Matt Simmonds, Investment Manager, KFIM, added: “We’re pleased to support Squire’s Garden Centres in ensuring the continuity of Hare Hatch, preserving both a valued community asset and employment for local staff. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of Squire’s Garden Centres management.”

Ten new jobs and £1.5m investment for Hillmount

Fourth generation family garden lifestyle business Hillmount is expanding in early 2025, adding a fifth garden centre to its portfolio with a £1.5m investment and the creation of 10 jobs.

Hillmount Carrick will join four other garden centres which are already owned and operated by the Mercer family in Ards, Bangor, Belfast and Cheshire.

As well as creating 10 jobs, the £1.5m investment will enable the installation of a new 60 seater café and extended plant area on the existing site of Sunnybank which has been in the Hardy family for 58 years.

Speaking about the expansion, Robin Mercer BEM, Managing Director of Hillmount, said: “We are really looking forward to bringing the Hillmount garden lifestyle brand to Carrick. Our family has been serving the local community in East Belfast since 1940 and more recently in Ards, Bangor and Cheshire. This latest opportunity to open in Mid and East Antrim marks an exciting new chapter in the ambitious longer term expansion plans for our family business.

“The addition of a new Gardener’s Rest Café will offer visitors to Hillmount Carrick with a relaxing space to enjoy a coffee after exploring the newly extended plant area.

“Opening Hillmount Carrick is testament to the hard work and vision of our family over four generations. We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved. It also reflects our continued commitment to excellence and dedication in serving gardening enthusiasts across Northern Ireland and beyond.”

It is anticipated that Hillmount Carrick will be open and ready to welcome customers both old and new by spring 2025, solidifying Hillmount’s position as a trusted name in horticulture and garden retail. Robin added: “We would like to put on record our thanks to the Hardy family who have made the transition of their much loved garden centre as seamless as possible. We wish them well in their retirement.”

From humble beginnings to 35 years of success

The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, a family-run business located between Brecon and Hay-On-Wye, is celebrating its 35th anniversary this January...

The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, a family-run business located between Brecon and Hay-On-Wye, is celebrating its 35th anniversary this January.

Established by Mark and Christina Cleary in 1990, the garden centre has grown from a modest 8x6ft greenhouse into one of the UK’s premier destination garden centres. This remarkable milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on its journey and look forward to an exciting future.

A Journey Through Time

Founded on the historic site of the old Brecon to Hereford Branch of the Midland Railway, the Old Railway Line Garden Centre began as a small family venture selling homegrown bedding plants. Christina Cleary recalls the early days, saying, “Mark and I started with just a tiny greenhouse and a passion for plants. Over the years, our love for gardening and the support of loyal customers allowed the business to expand and evolve.”

From its humble origins, the garden centre experienced continuous growth. By 2000, a dedicated plant area had been developed, followed by the opening of a coffee shop in 2001. Major milestones included the construction of the Platform 1 retail space in 2009 and the opening of a state-of-the-art retail building and restaurant in 2012, inaugurated by celebrity gardener David Domoney, who will return in spring to open an exciting new development.

The Next Chapter

As the garden centre celebrates 35 years, it is also embarking on a new chapter of improvements. Construction is set to begin on a modernised entrance, lobby, and covered plant area in January 2025, to replace current temporary marquee retail space. These developments are designed to enhance the customer experience, creating an inviting and weatherproof shopping environment.

Liam Cleary, Garden Retail Director, shared his vision, saying, “We’re committed to providing the best possible experience for our customers. The new entrance and plant area will ensure the Old Railway Line Garden Centre continues to be a place where people connect, shop, and create memories for years to come.”

A Family Legacy

The Cleary family is proud to see the next generation stepping up to run the successful business, ensuring the garden centre’s legacy continues to thrive. Mark Cleary expressed his pride, stating, “It’s incredibly rewarding to see our three children, alongside Huw and Joe, carrying forward our vision. Their fresh ideas and enthusiasm promise a bright future for the business.”

Looking Back, Moving Forward

Throughout its history, the Old Railway Line Garden Centre has remained dedicated to its core values of quality, community, and customer care. Recognised as the ‘Best Garden Centre in Wales & West’ for 10 consecutive years and ‘Best Garden Centre in the UK’ twice by the Garden Centre Association, the centre has become a beloved destination for gardening enthusiasts and families alike.
