Lancashire garden centre acquired by new owner

Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co has announced the sale of a new lease for Nursery End Garden Centre in Accrington, Lancashire...

Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co has announced the sale of a new lease for Nursery End Garden Centre in Accrington, Lancashire.

The three-acre site was originally purchased as a piece of land over 35 years ago by Mr and Mrs Ainsworth, who saw an opportunity to develop it into a nursery and garden centre. The business has since built up an excellent reputation for selling high-quality plants, in particular hybridising fuchsias which are sold through mail order and on-site. The centre has become a destination and attracts customers from far and wide.

A new lease for Nursery End Garden Centre was sold due to Mr and Mrs Ainsworth’s retirement and has been acquired by Adam Drake who plans to continue the existing business and expand its offerings further. Adam said, “I am looking forward to putting my own stamp on the business, and would like to thank Andrew from Christie & Co who worked hard on getting this tricky sale over the line.”

The process was handled by Andrew Birnie, Director at Christie & Co, who added, “As soon as Nursery End Garden Centre hit the open market, we received immediate interest from potential buyers.  There were multiple offers from a range of parties, including first-time buyers looking to enter the horticultural trade. This highlights the importance of an open marketing process to reach the widest possible pool of buyers, in order to find the best fit for the business. We wish our clients well in their retirement and look forward to seeing the business continue to thrive under Adam’s management.”

Former owner Mr Ainsworth added, “We would like to thank Christie & Co who made a complicated sale possible by their diligence and professionalism. We were very impressed by the attention to detail and personal service that we received from them.”

A new lease for the centre was sold at an undisclosed price.

GO FERROUS – A MUST for RUST!

The Patio Black Spot Removal Company Ltd has become famous, over the past fifteen years, for formulating products to cope with garden stonework cleaning issues...

The Patio Black Spot Removal Company Ltd has become famous, over the past fifteen years, for formulating products to cope with garden stonework cleaning issues.

During that period, the Patio Black Spot Removal Company have exhibited at around 130 garden shows, the length and breadth of the UK, including Ireland.

Patio Black Spot Remover and ancillary products have become house names. A trusted Brand, synonymous with the restoration of Garden stonework

At many of the Shows, one question that gardeners kept asking was,” have we a solution to remove rust from garden stonework?”

More specifically, the question invariably was, “how do you remove those orange spots from Garden Stonework?”

The Orange Spots are caused by overspill from lawn fertiliser which contains ferrous sulphate, which kills moss.

When wet, these leave orange rust spots that cannot be removed.

In addition, many gardeners have rust staining caused by fire pits, cast iron pots an planters, BBQ utensils, and so on.

Whether the stone be York stone or Indian Sandstone, Limestone or composite stone, or, more recently, Porcelain, the orange stains, caused by the run off of iron oxide, are both unsightly and virtually impossible to remove.

Until now!

The difficulty in removing rust from stone is that most commercial rust removers contain hydrochloric, phosphoric or other mineral acids.

This is fine to remove rust from metal, but they must not be used on stone.

Hydrochloric acid will literally dissolve limestone, and stains Yorkstone, and Indian Sandstone, orange as it reactivates the iron in the stone.

The solution was not straight forward.

Our Product development is based on Green Chemistry, a field focused on designing chemical products and processes that minimize hazardous substances and environmental impact across the entire life cycle of a chemical.

It aims to make chemistry more sustainable, by promoting safer alternatives an efficient resource utilisation.

However, after almost four years of Research and Development, we created GO FERROUS.

Go ferrous is made from recycled green- leaf vegetables; those that have gone beyond the stage where they can be sold.

Go Ferrous is therefore fully sustainable, one of the reasons it got to be one of ten Finalists at RHS Chelsea in 2023, selected by a panel of three judges, headed by Deborah Meaden.

Garden stonework is expensive; small stains can ruin your investment.

Rust staining on garden stonework, is caused by metal oxidising (Rusting) and running off onto garden stonework.

This can be caused by old garden pots, overspill from lawn fertiliser, which contains ferrous sulphate, or, currently Corten steel panels, the new fashionable garden panel.

Go Ferrous is applied to the surface of the stonework, ensuring that the product is ‘puddling’ on the surface over the stain.

When GO FERROUS is in contact with rust staining, a chemical reaction known as a double -displacement reaction occurs. This changes the rust (a.k.a. iron oxide) into iron oxalate. Since iron oxalate is a water-soluble salt, it dissolves in water and easily rinses away, using hot water of a light pressure wash.

Over a period of between 30 minutes and two hours, the product changes the oxide back into a salt, dissolving the stain and allowing it to be removed with hot water, or a light pressure wash.

Go Ferrous is both is both biodegradable and harmless to surrounding plants, whereas acid-based products will change the soil pH, which has an adverse effect on surrounding plants.

There are only two other similar products, both of which contain sodium mercaptoacitate and benzisothiazolinone and are acutely toxic, and  directly harmful to the environment.

Go Ferrous has the advantage of being able to be used from 3 Degrees Celsius, with no upper temperature limit.

NB It should not be applied in full sun or when the surface of the stone is hot, as, once dried out, it will cease to work.

The ultimate aim of all the Products that we produce, is to allow old garden stonework to be completely restored, meaning that it will not only save the public money, but, equally important, it will reduce the need to through away garden stonework, at the same time, reducing the use of landfill sites as a dumping ground for old stonework ,

This saves the public money and helps save the environment.

More Restoration, Less perspiration.

Go Ferrous is sold through Garden centres all over the Country or delivered through well know networks such as Parcel Force or DPD

Can be used on any stone surface, without damaging or altering the appearance.

Allows existing stone to be restored without damage to surrounding plants.

GO FERROUS – A MUST for RUST!

Be more sustainable with artificial flowers & foliage

Sustainability is a key consideration in today’s faux flower market. Shopper’s increasing desire to seek transparency when sourcing has caused a notable shift towards more eco-conscious home décor...

Sustainability is a key consideration in today’s faux flower market. Shopper’s increasing desire to seek transparency when sourcing has caused a notable shift towards more eco-conscious home décor.

Floralsilk’s exclusive, sustainably-produced ECO Flower & Foliage Collection is made from 100% recycled fabric and over 50% recycled plastic. The range features a variety of complementary, tonal foliage and flower stems, including peonies, tulips, ranunculus, roses and variegated foliage stems.

Why choose Faux over Fresh?

Unlike fresh flowers that wilt within days, faux flowers and foliage can be re-used across a multitude of events and seasons, making them the more environmentally friendly and cost-effective option.

  • To grow fresh flowers, a large amount of fresh water is required, especially in warmer climates. Faux flowers need no irrigation, making them more water-efficient.
  • Fresh flower farming often involves heavy pesticide and fertiliser use that harms soil and water ecosystems. Artificial flowers do not require such chemicals, reducing agricultural environmental impacts.
  • Fresh flowers are often grown overseas and flown or driven long distances under refrigerated conditions, consuming a lot of fuel. Faux flowers are also imported, but only once for long-term use, lowering the per-use emissions significantly.
  • When fresh flowers run their course they become organic waste and, if not composted correctly, can contribute to methane emissions in landfill. The reuse of artificial flowers will generate less waste over time.

It is clear that artificial flowers offer a more sustainable alternative to fresh, with no air freight, no water waste and no pesticides. Floralsilk’s high quality, exclusive ECO Collection goes a step further by using recycled materials, to allow you to enjoy long-lasting eco-conscious beauty, season after season.

Honeyfield’s shares tips on visual rewards of feeding birds

As the warmer months return, Honeyfield’s resident wild bird expert Simon Smethurst, who is head of sales at Honeyfield’s, is sharing tips on how your customers can turn their garden into a haven for some of Britain's most colourful wild birds.

The UK has a vast array of colourful species such as goldfinches, greenfinches, siskins, linnets and reed buntings. Many of these seed eating birds change their diets just before the breeding season, to incorporate more insects. They continue to feed their young an insect rich diet whilst they are being reared and weaned.

“Insects have a higher nutritional value, higher moisture levels and release vital nutrients more quickly than seeds,” said Simon. “Choosing the right food can make all the difference at this time of year if your customers want the stunning visual rewards that many of our beautiful breeds of bird can bring. Always remind them to provide clean water sources for drinking and bathing too.”

Simon recommends:

  • Dried mealworms and calciworms
  • Insect suet blocks
  • Mealworm and insect suet pellets
  • Robin mixes

“Hanging feeders in quiet, safe places around the garden, filled with any of the above insect-based foods, will be sure to attract a host of colourful birds,” said Simon. “Not only will your customers be able to enjoy the beautiful visual spectacle but more importantly they will be helping to support hard working parent birds to raise their young.”

To help identify any garden visitors this summer, we'd suggest your customers visit the Woodland Trust site where they will find plenty of information on how to spot finches by visual appearance and by song.

Honeyfield’s offers an exceptional range of wild bird feeds designed to support wildlife throughout the changing seasons. From high-energy sunflower hearts and nutritious seed mixes to suet treats and mealworms, there’s a feed for every species and dietary requirement.

The range is competitively priced for consumers to be able to feed the best, while retailers can benefit from good margin structures and introductory stocking incentives.

HTA supports the Embassy of Ireland's celebration of horticulture

On the evening of 22 May, His Excellency Martin Fraser, the Irish Ambassador to Great Britain and his wife, Deirdre, hosted a special event to celebrate the best of Irish and British horticulture at the Irish Embassy in London...

On the evening of 22 May, His Excellency Martin Fraser, the Irish Ambassador to Great Britain and his wife, Deirdre, hosted a special event to celebrate the best of Irish and British horticulture at the Irish Embassy in London.

The event, held in the week of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, took place a few days after EU and UK leaders met in London to officially launch a new phase of closer collaboration, including addressing the challenges of cross-border trade, which have hit horticulture hard in recent years.

Guests were wowed by Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) members Provender Nurseries and HSK Exotic Plants, who presented a Chelsea-worthy spectacular array and display of plants in the Embassy.

The evening kicked off with a panel event moderated by Liz Shanahan, a life sciences entrepreneur and passionate gardener, who chaired a panel with Billy Alexander of Kells Bay House & Gardens, Richard McKenna, Managing Director of Provender Nurseries and Jennifer Pheasey, Director of Public Affairs at the HTA. The speakers brought a wealth of expertise, with Billy being a gold medal winner at Chelsea, Richard an Irish national with a UK-based business supplying into Chelsea gardens and stands, and Jennifer an advocate for stronger international horticulture supply chains.

Ambassador Martin Fraser commented:

“We are delighted to be celebrating and championing the very best of Irish and British horticulture here at the Embassy, and the passionate gardeners, experts and businesses that are showcasing their work this week in London. Our thanks to all who have joined us for the discussion and wonderful display, and I hope that this event helps to foster new connections and friendships across these islands and this important industry.”

Jennifer Pheasey, Director of Public Affairs at the HTA, commented:

“The HTA, with members across the UK and in Ireland, values hugely these close business relationships and friendships in horticulture. These productive and valued relationships extend to its close work with the Irish Embassy in London, and we thank the Ambassador, Martin Fraser, who has shown tremendous commitment, generosity and interest in horticulture with this event.

“The timing of this event is especially welcome, not just being Chelsea week, but just a few days after the much-anticipated reset of UK-EU relationships was formally launched in London. This reset, which includes a shared ambition to address the trade barriers felt acutely by horticultural businesses supplying and trading across borders, has been long advocated for by the HTA, and we are committed to working with all partners to support an outcome that means UK-Irish, and wider EU, horticultural relationships can flourish.”

Liz Shanahan welcomed the event:

“I am incredibly honoured to have moderated this event for the last few years and to get to meet some of my gardening heroes. As someone who works in healthcare, I know how much having access to green spaces means to people, and we hear all the time how much difference creating and looking after those spaces mean to so many people, from those with cancer to dementia. This is a great event, and it is so kind of the Ambassador and his wife to host it. As a businesswoman, I also appreciate the size and scale of this aspect of horticulture and its great this year to be able to focus on those who are the backbone of this little bit of magic, once a year in Chelsea.”

Richard McKenna, Managing Director of Provender Nurseries, said:

“As a proud Irishman, and even prouder plantsman, it was a real honour to be on the panel at the Embassy’s event. Provender Nurseries has supply chains across Europe, and we welcome any opportunity to discuss what we do, the opportunities and challenges, and how, by working more closely, we can alleviate some of the issues we face, grow more, and grow our businesses. As a supplier into Chelsea gardens, having a platform to also shed light on what we do and how we do it is important, for that recognition and understanding. I am looking forward to having more discussions following this high-profile event.”

Roisin Wilson, Business Development Director at HSK Exotic Gardens, added:

“Alex and I from HSK Exotic Gardens were thrilled to be able to showcase our plants and design at the prestigious Irish Embassy Chelsea Flower Show event. We were really excited to see the reaction of the guests to the plants we provided, and we look forward to continuing our connections with others who are passionate about plants and all things green. I don’t just mean the Irish countryside either!’

The event, attended by a prominent audience of over 100 experts and industry leaders, demonstrated the long-standing business relationships and friendships in Anglo-Irish horticulture, serving as a platform to discuss this year’s Flower Show, the businesses behind the gardens and touch on the reset of the EU-UK relationship.

Notcutts’ rose donation blooms for mental health charity

Notcutts Garden Centres’ customers have raised £727 in donations for national mental health charity Mind, following an initiative across its 19 garden centres during Mental Health Awareness Week.

£1 was donated per every Mattocks Rose purchased during the week, where customers were encouraged to support the charity while also enjoying the wellbeing benefits of gardening and planting.

Mattocks Roses, a premium and exclusive collection established by the Mattocks family in 1875, are celebrated for their vibrant blooms, fragrance, and disease resistance. In 1985, Notcutts acquired the brand, including the rural Oxford nursery where these roses were originally grown, now the site of Notcutts Oxford Garden Centre.

As a family-owned garden centre business, Notcutts is committed to workplace wellbeing and supporting mental health for its teams across 19 garden centres nationwide. In October 25 Notcutts colleagues successfully qualified as Mental Health First Aiders, completing a nationally recognised qualification with skills to recognise mental health symptoms, provide initial support, and signpost individuals to appropriate professional help.

Nick Burrows, CEO, Notcutts, said: “Thank you to our customers for joining us in supporting this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week. We are pleased to donate over £700 to the charity Mind, while celebrating our heritage with the glorious Mattocks Roses and highlighting the positive impact of gardening on our mental health and wellbeing.”

Sarah Dempsey, HR Director and Mental Health First Aider, added: “Mental health is an important subject at Notcutts, we’re proud to invest in Mental Health First Aid training for many colleagues and to create an environment where mental wellbeing is prioritised alongside physical wellbeing.”

As pioneers of accessible gardening for all, Notcutts champions the joy of learning from nature and the wellbeing benefits of gardening. Supporting communities and colleagues lies at the heart of the company’s philosophy.  Reflecting this commitment, Notcutts proudly supports health and wellbeing charities including the Green Light Trust, Suffolk Mind and The Blossom Charity, as well as Perennial and the Rainy Day Trust.

A mini conference held at the Italian Embassy in London last week to promote the country’s horticultural industry and a new trade event called GreenItaly, was timed perfectly to coincide with the gardening enthusiasm created by the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and government announcements about border trade.

Moderated by Tim Briefcliffe of the AIPH, the event heard from speakers including a landscape architect Antonella Melone, designer and researcher Cristina Morbi, editor in chief of Gardenia magazine Emanuela Rosa-Clot, sales manager with Giorgio Tesi Group Andrea Minghi, and Henry Williams of YouGarden based in Spalding.

Conversations revolved around how climate change has seen an increase in UK professionals seeking advice from Italian counterparts on best plants and practices for warmer, dryer conditions, and a need for landscape projects to be considered as providing ecosystem services to help negate the effects of weather extremes as well as being ornamental.

Rich mixes of plants in Italian landscapes comprising native and non-native species is strengthening biodiversity which is crucial as in some parts of Italy trees like ash, birch and ornamental cherries are proving to be almost impossible to establish.

With many UK garden centres enjoying good relations with Italian suppliers, especially when it comes to specimen plants and trees, it was encouraging to hear Henry Williams praise his Italian suppliers as being ‘the most professional and forward thinking in Europe’.

‘Over the last five years, the range of what they're growing has increased massively. I’ve also found they work the hardest out of many growers to understand the legislation and the issues we have. Its refreshing when the Italian growers ring up and ask ‘what have we got to do to help get this through and what needs to be done?”

From 15-17 October, GreenItaly will take place at the Fiere Di Parma. The show’s new format will focus on plants, accessories and technology for urban horticulture, will showcase the excellence of Italian horticultural stock and foster relations between everyone working with in the sector in UK and Italy.

HTA warns Inheritance Tax changes could cost 1,300 sector jobs, slash investment and drain tax revenues

Proposed changes to Inheritance Tax (IHT) reliefs are set to create a ‘lose-lose’ scenario for the UK, according to the Horticultural Trades Association. New data reveals these reforms, for the environmental horticulture sector alone, would ultimately cost the Exchequer £36 million in net tax revenues by 2030, directly contradicting the government's stated aim to boost public finances...

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA, said: "This research unequivocally shows that the government's proposed Inheritance Tax changes are a classic lose-lose."

Proposed changes to Inheritance Tax (IHT) reliefs are set to create a ‘lose-lose’ scenario for the UK, according to the Horticultural Trades Association.

New data reveals these reforms, for the environmental horticulture sector alone, would ultimately cost the Exchequer £36 million in net tax revenues by 2030, directly contradicting the government's stated aim to boost public finances.

The HTA cautions that the proposed changes will not generate revenue as intended. Instead, they could lead to a reduction of £60 million in the UK's environmental horticulture sector, with broader economic losses amounting to £143 million due to decreased industry activity. Additionally, these changes may result in the loss of 1,300 sector jobs, which directly contradicts the government's goal of promoting growth and increasing tax revenue.

The environmental horticulture sector is a cornerstone of the UK’s green economy, underpinning the nation's green infrastructure – from nurseries providing trees for planting targets to businesses maintaining public spaces and private gardens. This is all now at risk according to the HTA’s latest data, which shows that reforms to inheritance tax risk widespread disruption to jobs, investment, and essential environmental infrastructure.

An economic impact analysis commissioned by the HTA from CBI Economics, the independent consultancy arm of the CBI, provides stark projections of the proposed changes' impact on HTA members:

  • A net loss of £36 million in tax revenues for the Exchequer by 2030, once reduced growth and investment are factored in. This directly refutes the economic rationale for the reforms.
  • 1,295 direct job losses (full-time equivalent) across HTA member businesses, rising to 2,529 jobs across the wider economy.
  • £60 million in direct Gross Value Added (GVA) lost from HTA members, rising to £143 million in wider economic losses.

These findings reinforce a broader warning issued today by Family Business UK, supported by the HTA and 31 other trade associations, highlighting the severe consequences for SMEs and long-standing family firms nationwide.

HTA’s internal data further highlights the direct threat to horticultural businesses, with 69% of members expecting to be affected by changes to Business Property Relief (BPR) and 40% anticipating an impact from changes to Agricultural Property Relief (APR).

Crucially, among those expecting to be affected by APR/BPR changes, the survey reveals widespread plans to curtail activity:

  • 55% said they would pause or cancel critical investments in future growth and green infrastructure.
  • 27.5% indicated plans to downsize their business operations.
  • 48% said they would reduce their workforce or pause recruitment.

These figures indicate a significant disruption to business confidence, employment, and future investment in a sector that underlies the UK’s environmental and economic ambitions.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA, said: "This research unequivocally shows that the government's proposed Inheritance Tax changes are a classic lose-lose. They will not only fail to raise the intended revenue but will actively cost the country vital jobs, investment, and growth. It’s deeply illogical. Our family-run horticultural firms are the very backbone of the green economy, delivering essential benefits for our economy, environment, communities, and public health and wellbeing. These proposals risk uprooting the sector at every level, leaving it with fewer resources to invest in the UK’s green infrastructure. Economically, socially, and environmentally, it simply doesn’t make sense for the country to be worse off and the Exchequer to receive less tax. The government must urgently rethink this misguided approach."

The HTA is urgently calling on the government to reconsider these proposals in light of the evidence and to recognise the critical role the horticultural sector plays not just in the economy, but in delivering environmental and social benefits to communities across the UK.

Flymo stays true to its promise after 60 years

Flymo has released two new adverts that convey how quick, simple and surprisingly satisfying gardening can be. The campaign is the latest instalment in Flymo’s multi-million pound Easi Does It campaign, which brings to life the simplicity and convenience of its cordless range.

Flymo has released two new adverts that convey how quick, simple and surprisingly satisfying gardening can be.

The campaign is the latest instalment in Flymo’s multi-million pound Easi Does It campaign, which brings to life the simplicity and convenience of its cordless range.

One advert captures a weightlifter interrupting his patio workout to tackle a persistent weed using the EasiWeeder before returning to his reps; the other shows a dog walker clearing her pathway in seconds with her EasiBlow Vac.

Love Actually’s Bill Nighy, Peter Sallis from Wallace & Gromit and Coronation Street’s Ken Morley are among a host of stars to appear in Flymo’s famous adverts over the past 60 years.

Peter, who voiced Wallace, promoted the E-Minimo to tackle “handkerchief lawns” while startled Ken, who played legendary Reg Holdsworth in Corrie, used his mower to quickly cut the lawn as his wife arrived home in the 1986 advert.

Julie Blades, Global Product Manager at Flymo, said: “We had incredibly innovative products, but never chose to talk about the science in the adverts.

“Instead, it was about how our innovation led to ease and speed. We know most Flymo customers do not enjoy cutting the grass.

“It is something they want done quickly so they can get on with enjoying their garden.”

Developed in partnership with McCann Advertising, Total Media, and Democracy PR, the Easi Does It campaign is running across social media, YouTube and in-store to celebrate Flymo’s 60th birthday.

Sarah Bentham, UK Marketing Manager at Flymo, said: “We have always believed Flymo works best when you do not overcomplicate it.

“These new fun and fast adverts continue that tradition to target time-pressed households with no-fuss products that help them spend less time doing chores and more time enjoying their gardens.

Peter Beales Roses contributed to Jo Thompson’s acclaimed 'The Glasshouse Garden' at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025, supplying a selection of heritage and wildlife-friendly roses that embody the garden’s themes of resilience, transformation, and sanctuary.

Designed for The Glasshouse, a social enterprise supporting women nearing the end of their prison sentences through horticultural training and employment, the garden features a powerful planting palette of deep magentas, rich burgundies, and soft apricot tones. Among the standout varieties is the ever-popular Rosa ‘Wild Rover’—a semi-double, dark mauve floribunda with a creamy yellow eye, known for its long flowering season and pollinator appeal. This variety has proven so popular that it is currently sold out.

Other notable Peter Beales roses featured include Rosa ‘Tuscany Superb’ and Rosa ‘Charles de Mills’, both selected for their rich colour and historical significance. These varieties were chosen to align with Thompson’s vision of “strong beauty,” reflecting the strength and potential for renewal among the women supported by The Glasshouse programme.

“We are proud to support Jo Thompson’s meaningful design with our roses,” said Ian Limmer, Nursery Manager at Peter Beales Roses. “It’s deeply rewarding to see our heritage varieties contribute to a garden that not only showcases horticultural excellence but also carries a powerful social message.”

Following the show, “The Glasshouse Garden” will be relocated to HMP Downview in Surrey, where it will continue to serve as a place of hope and rehabilitation.

Peter Beales Roses, established in 1968, is renowned for its extensive collection of over 1,200 rose varieties, including many rare and historic cultivars. With 30 RHS Chelsea Gold Medals, the nursery continues to lead in rose cultivation and garden design.

UK Rose Society gives top awards to rose veterans

The UK Rose Society has given the Dean Hole Award – its top honour – to John Anthony for 60 years of devotion to the rose...

The UK Rose Society has given the Dean Hole Award – its top honour – to John Anthony for 60 years of devotion to the rose.

John has been exhibiting exceptional roses at Society shows for six decades. He was a stalwart of the Royal National Rose Society. A Council member and Officer of the Society John was also on hand to assist in any role at its famous show garden at St Albans, before financial challenges forced the closure of the garden and Society. He helped create the new UK Rose Society to uphold the original mission and values of its predecessor.

Derek Lawrence, Chair of the Honours Committee, said: “John’s integrity, expertise and unwavering professionalism have helped build a respected and thriving new Rose Society. His strong work ethic, diplomacy, and tireless commitment have charted a clear course toward a bright and flourishing future.”

The Society has also honoured the well-known garden writer Charles Quest-Ritson and his wife Brigid, with a Lifetime Achievement Award for over 50 years’ dedication to the rose.

Charles – often with Brigid’s help – has written many books, including his definitive Climbing Roses of the World, which describes over 1,600 varieties and took five years to research. Together they wrote the RHS Encyclopaedia of Roses, published in 2003 and still a fantastic resource for rose lovers.

They helped found the Historic Roses Group in the UK and both have served in roles for the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS), particularly in supporting the heritage rose movement. The pair are both linguists – Charles has lectured in five languages and on six continents. For a while they ran their own nursery, propagating own-root roses. Later, while living in France, they grew over 1,000 roses in their 12-acre garden.

Ray Martin, Secretary of the UK Rose Society, said: “Charles’ and Brigid’s knowledge comes not just from travelling the world and researching, but from practical experience. Charles is uncompromising and unafraid to speak his mind in defence of older roses, challenging gardeners and rose lovers to do more to protect our precious rose heritage. He and Brigid have bent their knee to the Queen of Flowers, both metaphorically and physically, for five decades. They have served with diligence and distinction and are profoundly deserving of this honour.”

The Society gave three other awards – The Silver Tudor Rose Medal – to garden writer Martin Stott, author of the Storyteller Garden blog, to Derek Lawrence, former Executive Director of the World Federation of Rose Societies, and to Nick Baldwin who works tirelessly, in the background, dispatching sales from the Society’s website shop. All three are active supporters of the UK Rose Society.

The honours were given at the Society’s AGM, which included a Spring Rose Show for members. A fine exhibition was put on with several prizes given.

  • The Kilbee Cup - Spring Champions - Pauline and Ray Martin
  • The Gardener's Company Cup - most points in hybrid tea and floribunda classes - Stella and Frank Morris
  • The Arthur Cox Trophy - most points in miniature and miniflora classes - Pauline and Ray Martin
  • Best exhibit in show - Class 31 - basket of miniature roses - Irresistible - Pauline and Ray Martin

Blue Diamond reports turnover of £332m and profits of £22m in 2024 - UPDATED

Blue Diamond have reported profits before tax of £21.8m from a turnover of £332.4m in their 2024 Report and Accounts published today. Managing Director Alan Roper leads on "The missing millions" in his report: "In summary, £12.5m of profit per annum has been wiped out by 3 years of government intervention on wage costs."

He goes on to say: "When one considers the profit erosion of businesses through government policy, as I have outlined in my report, it's not surprising that companies have hit troubled waters. However, that doesn't mean that the consumer has turned its back on garden centres as an industry, as the UK media have suggested, or indeed that a business needs to sink...

"..The garden centre industry remains one with a bright, strong future. Blue Diamond is well-positioned as the most profitable and largest garden centre group in the UK, and it continues to prosper and grow as more garden centre businesses become distressed or are sold for family reasons...

"...I wish to thank the now 5,000 employees who collectively make the difference and help build the company DNA that makes us the leading force in the industry."

Following publication of the Report and Accounts, Alan explained to GTN Xtra that some helpful facts will help to contextualise the profit statement: "Our EBITDA in 2024 was a sizeable £34.8m, we have low debt levels, and our gearing at year-end was just 17%.

"The big difference between our profit of £21.9m and our EBITDA of £34.8m  is not due to debt servicing but to our depreciation of £9.5m.

"Unlike other larger groups, we invest heavily in our sites. For example, in 2023, we spent £11m on refurbishment projects 2023 and £12.5m in 2024; in doing so, we futureproof our sites and deliver a first-class experience for our customers."

Sustainable landscaping is no longer just a trend – it’s a customer expectation. From biodiversity to water management, climate-aware choices are shaping today’s garden designs. Meadow View Stone is leading the way with innovative aggregate solutions that align with this growing demand.

One of the biggest shifts in consumer behaviour is the rise of gravel gardens; a low-maintenance, cost-effective approach that looks stunning and also supports long-term environmental resilience. Gravel helps retain moisture in dry conditions, allows for superior drainage and reduces water run-off.

One standout product is Meadow View Stone’s ECO Sparkle 20mm, launched at Glee 2024 and already a top 20 best-seller, with a re-ordering rate of 45%. This eye-catching aggregate combines a recycled by-product from China Clay production with premium white chippings. It has a unique decorative finish with silver tones, black flecks, white and hints of light pink. Its visual appeal and strong eco credentials make it a smart choice for environmentally conscious consumers and an asset for garden centres looking to stand out in the market.

ECO Sparkle's popularity reflects key garden trends for 2025:

  • The growth of hardcore gardening for reduced water use and maintenance
  • Growing demand for wildlife-friendly landscapes
  • The importance of permeable surfaces in urban and flood-prone areas
  • Consumer interest in recycled, ethically sourced materials

"ECO Sparkle isn’t just a decorative aggregate, it’s a solution to environmental challenges garden designers face today," says Sarah Hill, Managing Director at Meadow View Stone. "It empowers stockists with an exclusive product that delivers both beauty and purpose."

As homeowners and landscapers increasingly seek materials that align with their eco values, Meadow View Stone is proud to support the industry with sustainable, high-quality aggregates.

Hillier Nurseries and Garden Centres’ groundbreaking new plant introduction, Philadelphus x ‘Petite Perfume Pink’, has been named RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year 2025. The plant is being showcased within the Sparsholt College garden, which this year celebrates resilient and innovative planting suitable for UK conditions.

The award, judged by a panel of RHS experts, recognises the most innovative and high-performing plants introduced to UK gardens each year. Among this year’s 16 shortlisted entries, Philadelphus x ‘Petite Perfume Pink’ was praised for its exceptional fragrance, garden performance and most notably, its status as the first-ever truly pink-flowered Philadelphus.

The plant was bred by Alan Postill, one of the most highly regarded plant breeders in British horticulture. Alan began his remarkable 60-year career at Hillier in 1962, joining the team at just 15 years old, and retired in 2023. Even in retirement, his influence continues, with new plant introductions that are set to inspire and shape UK gardens for generations. International licensing is managed by Plantipp bv.

“To see Petite Perfume Pink win Chelsea Plant of the Year is incredibly special”, said Charles Carr, Head of Wholesale Nurseries at Hillier. “Not only is it a breakthrough plant in its own right, it’s also a shining example of the skill, vision and passion Alan Postill brought to Hillier and to British horticulture. This win is a tribute to him and to everything he’s given to our industry.”

Alan’s influence can be seen in many garden favourites, including Daphne bholua ‘Jacqueline Postill’, named for his wife, and Choisya x dewittiana ‘Aztec Gold’, launched at Chelsea in 2012. Known for his dedication and exceptional skill in propagation, Alan has introduced countless resilient, beautifully formed plants that continue to inspire gardeners across the country.

This year’s win crowns a strong performance for Hillier, which had two plants shortlisted for RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year. Joining the winning Petite Perfume Pink on the shortlist was Rhaphiolepis indica ‘White Cloud’ – a refined evergreen with pure white blooms and strong garden performance, ideal for low-maintenance planting schemes.

Philadelphus x ‘Petite Perfume Pink’ is available exclusively at Hillier Garden Centres in 3 and 7.5 litre pots. With the Chelsea win now confirmed, high demand is expected from gardeners and collectors alike.
