Gardening guru launches hunt for Britain’s best plot

Grow-your-own gardening expert, Huw Richards, has teamed up with GARDENA to launch a search for Britain’s best plot.

Top of the Plots celebrates the best in ‘grow your own’ culture and gardening greatness, from the perfect plot to windowsill wonders and children's prizes.

GARDENA, Europe’s number one watering and hand tools brand, has launched the competition with the support of The National Allotment Society and £1,000 worth of products and RHS vouchers to help your garden space flourish.

Head judge Huw, the Sunday Times best-selling author and grow-your-own expert, kicked off the contest with a gardening masterclass at Bents Garden & Home in Warrington, Cheshire, on Saturday (March 22).

As the demand for allotments and plots booms across the UK, Top of the Plots will shine a spotlight on the passion, skill and achievements of the country’s incredible group of growers.

Sustainable living and food security, combined with the proven physical and mental well-being benefits, have resulted in home and community gardening becoming more relevant than ever.

From May 19, green-fingered gardeners can enter Top of the Plots by submitting photos and descriptions of their plots or allotments via email, with the selected category.

The competition is open to gardeners of all levels - from high-rise flats to horticulture gardens - and aims to celebrate the diversity, creativity, and resilience of the UK’s growing community.

The main awards include Best Allotment - the finest plot in an official allotment space, Best Garden Plot - the top home garden or backyard plot, and Best New Plot - a plot started in the past 12 months, judged on seasonal progress and performance.

From these categories, the overall winner will be crowned Plot of the Year.

Additionally, recognitions will be given for Kids on the Plot, Best Small Plot - such as a windowsill garden, Biodiversity on the Plot, and Best Community Plot.

The main competition prize is £1,000 worth of GARDENA products and gardening vouchers for plants and sundries, as well as a coveted champion’s plaque. The first 100 entrants will also receive exclusive Top of the Plots merchandise.

Mike Farrell, Chairman of the National Allotment Society, said: “Allotments have been at the heart of communities for generations, providing food security, a place to connect, and a way to care for the environment. Top of the Plots is a brilliant way to highlight their importance.

“At the National Allotment Society, we know how vital these spaces are - not just for food, but for mental well-being, education, and social connection. We’re excited to support this initiative and see the incredible plots from across the country.”

Head judge, Huw Richards, GARDENA Ambassador with more than 850,000 YouTube subscribers, said: “This competition isn’t just about finding the best plots, it’s about inspiring more people to take up growing, whether on an allotment, in a garden, or even on a windowsill. Everyone can be a grower.

“Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this competition is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the joy of cultivating your produce and connecting with nature.”

GARDENA and the National Allotment Society invite all gardening enthusiasts to take part and celebrate the power of growing their own food, fostering biodiversity, and creating beautiful, sustainable plots.
