Haskins Garden Centre has partnered with Mansbridge Primary School to donate houseplants to the school in Swaythling.
The school business manager of Mansbridge Primary School, Elaine Brewerton, and the family inclusion support officer, Marie Moody, visited Haskins in West End on Tuesday January 22 to meet with James Varney, assistant general manager of the West End garden centre, and to collect a variety of houseplants for the school.
Haskins’ donation will benefit staff members and students at the school, which chose from the following houseplants:
- Areca Palm
- Boston Fern
- Phlebodium Fern
- Spider Plant
- Maranta / Calathea
- Tradescantia
- Bromeliads
Mansbridge Primary School opted to position their chosen houseplants in each of the school’s classrooms, offices and school reception.
Houseplants help to make the air in the home less toxic by purifying the air and eliminating any volatile organic compounds. Studies also show that humans are generally happier when surrounded by a plant. Homes can be full of airborne pollutants, with carpets, paint and even people harbouring toxins - especially in the winter months, when windows are closed to the cold air outside and central heating is ramped up indoors.
James Varney, assistant general manager at Haskins in West End, commented: “We’re delighted to have partnered with Mansbridge Primary School to help raise awareness of the benefits that introducing a green leafy houseplant into a school environment can bring. We teamed up with the school to kick-start the New Year and help boost concentration, improve air quality and reduce stress levels by providing them with complimentary houseplants.”
Elaine Brewerton, school business manager at Mansbridge Primary School, added: “As well as looking good and brightening up the school, houseplants benefit our health by trapping and capturing pollutants, and helping us to breathe more easily. Having plants in our classrooms will give the children the opportunity to help look after them and watch them grow as well as being something nice to look at.”
