Gardening naturally with Chimney Sheep’s jute mulch mats
Chimney Sheep’s jute mulch mats are a must have for all gardeners, particularly those with allotment gardeners or vegetable patches.
The compostable mulch mats made from recycled coffee bean sacks are perfect for aiding the growth of all vegetable plants including brassicas, strawberry and beetroot plants.
The 5mm thick mats are much denser in comparison to their polypropylene alternative. This makes the mats more effective at conserving water, suppressing weeds, reducing competition and reducing temperature fluctuations of the soil, giving the plants the best chance of successful growth and harvest. The mats will also help to deter slugs and snails if they are pre-soaked in garlic water. The combination of the texture of the mat and the garlic keeps molluscs from chomping away at leaves and fruit again contributing to a successful harvest.
In addition to their mulching qualities, the mats are super simple to use and very versatile. Using them requires no shovelling, cutting or pinning down as they can just be slotted around the base of the plant to sit firmly on the ground or in a pot. This method ensures that each plant gets its own bit of making the concentration of mulch per plant higher than using materials such as straw or bark mulch to spread across beds.
The mulch mats are circular and come in various sizes ranging from 4” – 16”. They can be purchased directly from www.chimneysheep.co.uk.
