Garden Centre Association (GCA) members saw another month of highly variable weather conditions but proved resilient with overall sales increasing by +2.08% according to June’s Barometer of Trade (BoT) released today (July 20, 2026).
Despite a month marked by periods of cold, wet weather followed by extreme heat, the industry maintained positive growth, taking year-to-date performance to +1.23%.
Peter Burks, GCA CEO, says: “The industry had to endure another month of very variable weather but again demonstrated its great resilience by returning a small increase of +2.08% in sales compared to June 2025. Plants and gardening once again suffered with neither the cold and wet, or the extreme heat, really being conducive to sales.
“Fortunately, furniture and BBQs had another strong month, while catering and food again did well, ensuring that the figures weren’t too poor. However, it’s certainly a very challenging period for the shop floor as July has also recorded some very high temperatures and some areas have hosepipe bans too.”
The strongest performing category during June was clothing, which increased by +11.13% when compared to June 2025. This was closely followed by seeds & bulbs, up +10.43%, and furniture & BBQs, which rose by +10.11%.
Catering also enjoyed a positive month, increasing by +6.51%, while food hall/farm shop sales were up +3.63% year-on-year. Another category recording growth was gifts, up +1.58%.
Several gardening-related categories experienced declines during the month, reflecting the difficult weather conditions.
Outdoor plants fell by -0.79%, garden sundries was down -1.82% and houseplants -4.3%.
More significant reductions were seen in pets & aquatics, -4.37%, as well as hard landscaping -5.38%.
The GCA’s BoT reports are compiled using actual sales figures and provide an up-to-date trading position statement. They are made available mid-month following the end of the prior month after all member garden centres have submitted their results.
The BoT allows members to compare their trading positions with other centres.
The GCA represents more than 200 garden centres nationwide. Through sharing information and its inspection programme, the GCA helps members achieve high standards in customer service, plant quality and reliability.

Garden centres faced challenging trading conditions in June due to record-breaking heat, unpredictable rainfall, and impending water restrictions.
According to the latest Market Update from the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), overall garden centre sales decreased by 2% in value compared to June 2025 and by 5% compared to June 2024. Gardening sales also declined, falling by 5% from June 2025 and 13% from June 2024.
June 2026 was the UK’s second-hottest June on record and notably wetter than both 2025 and 2024. The combination of increased rainfall and extreme temperatures, along with advice against non-essential travel during heatwaves, likely contributed to a 2% decrease in total garden centre visits compared to the previous year.
However, while June brought significant challenges, it is important to note that both of the previous years served as strong benchmarks for comparison. June 2024 benefited from a delayed gardening season due to a wet spring, while June 2025 saw an exceptionally strong sales performance.
The HTA has also expressed concerns about unclear public messaging regarding Temporary Use Bans (TUBs) for water, particularly the references to “hosepipe bans.” These messages can inadvertently discourage people from visiting garden centres and purchasing plants, creating uncertainty for both garden retailers and their customers.
HTA Chief Executive, Fran Barnes, said: “June demonstrated the increasingly complex conditions our members are operating in, with extreme heat, rain falling across considerably more days than the last two years and conversely the start of water restrictions in some areas, all creating challenges at different points throughout the month.
“The horticulture sector understands the importance of conserving water during periods of shortage, but restrictions must be introduced with clear, consistent messaging that recognises the essential role our businesses play. Confusion around Temporary Use Bans can have unintended consequences, leaving customers unsure about what they can do in their own gardens and businesses uncertain about how restrictions will affect demand.
“UK garden centres continue to adapt to changing consumer behaviour and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns, but they are doing so while facing significant cost pressures across employment, supply chains and input costs. These pressures are making it increasingly challenging for businesses to invest and grow. Supporting the sector to operate effectively through periods of disruption is essential if we are to continue creating greener, healthier places for people and communities.”
Despite the challenging conditions, average transaction values held steady at £30.40 per visit, excluding VAT, which is up 1% compared with June 2025, suggesting that customers continued to spend well when visiting garden centres.
However, gardening categories experienced a tougher month, with plant sales declining year-on-year. Bedding plants were down 1%, hardy plants fell by 4%, and indoor plants declined by 10%.
On a positive note, outdoor containers performed better than in previous years, with a 2% increase compared to June 2025. Conversely, garden furniture sales dropped by 7%, and garden tools decreased by 9%, despite the warm weather.
Consumer confidence remained unchanged at -23 points in June 2026, with sentiment remaining in negative territory across all demographic groups, including higher-income households.
There were some signs of improvement in the wider economic outlook, with the index rising by 2 points to -36, but confidence remains considerably weaker than a year ago. The savings index also fell by two points to 20, suggesting households may be finding it harder to put money aside as cost pressures continue.
Despite the difficult trading conditions in June, the year-to-date picture shows garden centres continuing to perform close to the exceptional levels achieved in 2025. Overall sales are just -1% behind 2025 year-to-date and remain +7% ahead of 2024.
Gardening sales remain -5% behind 2025 but are still +5% ahead of 2024. Non-gardening categories continue to support businesses, with year-to-date sales +5% ahead of 2025, driven particularly by catering, which is up +7%.
However, while sales have held up against a very strong 2025 comparator, rising employment, supply chain, and input costs continue to put pressure on business margins.
The HTA Market Update tracks sales performance across garden centres and provides insight into consumer confidence, trading conditions and wider economic pressures affecting the horticulture sector. HTA members can access further insights in this month’s Market Update on the website.

Food Allergy Aware has been named Health & Safety Consultancy of the Year 2026 at the Safety & Health Excellence Awards, recognising its leadership in transforming allergen risk management across the UK hospitality and food service industry.
The award acknowledges innovation, collaboration and practical leadership, including two flagship initiatives that are helping food businesses move beyond compliance towards a stronger food safety culture.
The first is the Near Miss Reporting Campaign, developed in partnership with JACS Allergen Management in collaboration as Hospitality Allergen Support UK (HASUK) and The campaign encourages food businesses to report and investigate allergen-related near misses before someone is harmed.
While many allergen incidents never reach the point of causing injury, they often reveal weaknesses in systems, communication or operational practices. Food Allergy Aware believes these learning opportunities should never be lost. By encouraging a transparent, no-blame reporting culture, the campaign enables businesses to identify trends, strengthen controls and prevent future incidents, placing prevention at the heart of allergen management.
Alongside this work, Food Allergy Aware has introduced its Food Allergy Aware Certified Allergen Management, an independent assessment and recognition programme developed to provide assurance that businesses have embedded robust allergen management throughout their operations.
The Winchester Hotel & Spa were the first to be awarded Gold Certification, with others in the pipeline.
Unlike schemes that focus solely on documentation, the pilot evaluates practical implementation, staff knowledge, leadership commitment, customer communication, food safety management systems and operational controls. The objective is simple: to help protect people living with food allergies, coeliac disease and food intolerances by ensuring businesses consistently deliver safe food and informed customer service.
Founder Caroline Benjamin said: "This award recognises far more than consultancy. It reflects our commitment to changing behaviours, improving safety culture and ensuring allergen management becomes embedded within everyday food safety practices.
"The Near Miss Reporting Campaign encourages businesses to learn before someone is harmed, while our Food Allergy Aware Certification Pilot gives businesses an opportunity to demonstrate best practice and provides reassurance to customers that allergen safety has been independently assessed.
"Ultimately, everything we do is about reducing risk and helping ensure people with food allergies, coeliac disease and food intolerances can eat out with greater confidence."
Caroline dedicated the award to the memories of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, Sadie Bristow, Benedict Blythe, Owen Carey, Hannah Jacobs and Cameron Wahid, whose lives continue to inspire improvements in allergen awareness and food safety throughout the industry.
Food Allergy Aware continues to work with hospitality businesses, healthcare providers, contract caterers, education settings, local authorities and suppliers to raise standards through consultancy, accredited training, auditing, mystery dining, independent certification and practical guidance.
As allergen incidents continue to present one of the most significant food safety risks facing the hospitality sector, Food Allergy Aware hopes this national recognition will encourage more organisations to embrace proactive allergen management, adopt near miss reporting and strive for independently verified best practice.

You can grow varieties you’d never normally find as plants in a garden centre, let alone on a supermarket shelf! What I love about heirloom tomatoes is that each has its own character. Some are sweet, some are tangy, some are meaty and perfect for slicing, while others are best eaten warm straight from the plant."

Colin made unannounced visits to member garden centres in the South East area across a 12-week period through spring and early summer.
He said: “As always, the outstanding horticultural standards demonstrated by centres in the South East were evident throughout the inspection season. Combined with the glorious sunshine, it made visiting and assessing the centres a genuine pleasure.
“The quality of restaurant and café service, together with the standard of food on offer, was consistently impressive. It was easy to see why so many centres have been enjoying double-digit growth in this area of their business.
“When asked why they chose to visit their local garden centre, customers frequently cited the availability of free parking, a safe and welcoming shopping environment, and an unmatched range of products and services.
“It was particularly encouraging to see the effort many centres had made to review last year’s inspection reports and implement action plans. Their commitment to continuous improvement was clearly visible and has positioned them strongly for 2026.”

Staff at garden centres across the Garden Centre Association’s (GCA) Midlands, Wales & West region are celebrating after scooping awards during a presentation yesterday afternoon and evening at Gates Garden Centre in Hinckley (Thursday, July 16, 2026).

Garden Centre of the Year winners were Planters Garden Centre, Tamworth (top) in the Destination Garden Centre (DGC) category, Old Railway Line Garden Centre (above), Garden Centre (GC) category and Poundbury Gardens (below), Local Garden Centre (LGC).

Peter Burks, GCA CEO, said: “Our Midlands, Wales & West regional awards meeting was a fantastic celebration of the dedication, innovation and high standards shown by our member garden centres across the region. I’d like to thank everyone who attended, especially those who travelled by coach from Somerset to the Midlands. This was the second Area Awards Meeting where we arranged coach travel and it proved to be a great success.
“A huge thank you also goes to our wonderful hosts for the evening, the team at Gates Garden Centre in Hinckley, who gave us all such a warm welcome.
“It was also invaluable to hear feedback from our Inspector, Alyson Haywood, following her visits to centres across the area. Her insights will help members recognise the excellent work already being done, share praise with their teams and identify opportunities to continue improving.”
Alyson was responsible for inspecting member garden centres in the Midlands, Wales & West area across a 12-week period where he made unannounced visits.
She said: “It was a real pleasure to visit members across the Midlands, Wales & West region this year. Throughout my visits, I saw many excellent examples of best practice, with teams delivering the warm, knowledgeable and friendly customer service the region is known for. The centres were welcoming, engaging and enjoyable places to spend time, with strong plant quality and attractive stock displays evident throughout.
“As always, there are opportunities to build on these achievements and I know members will take on board the feedback shared and continue striving to raise standards even further.”

The Edinburgh developer and manufacturer behind the innovative Air-Pot® recently attended a prestigious Royal Reception at St James’s Palace to celebrate its 2026 King’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade (July 8, 2026).
Marketing & Sales Representative Georgie Single joined fellow award recipients from across the UK at the special event hosted in recognition of businesses honoured with awards this year.
Georgie, who met Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, says: “It was a huge privilege to represent Air-Pot® at St James’s Palace and reflect on what this award means for our family business, our small but mighty team and our wonderful partners who have supported our journey down the years. I was overwhelmed with pride to be there.
“It was such a wonderful occasion and a gorgeously sunny day too. It was also a tremendous honour to celebrate alongside so many inspirational businesses from across the UK.”
Air-Pot®, developed and manufactured by The Caledonian Tree Company, was named a recipient of a 2026 King’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade in May, recognising its sustained export success across more than 40 countries worldwide during the past 36 years.
Founded in 1990 by Jamie and Suzie Single, The Caledonian Tree Company employs eight staff in Scotland and works with international representatives supporting growers across global markets.
Georgie adds: “Receiving The King’s Award for Enterprise was already an incredible accolade, but attending the Royal Reception brought the achievement to life in a very special way.
“As a second-generation family member involved in the business, it made me immensely proud to celebrate our parents’ vision, the dedication of our team and the global success of Air-Pot®. It was a day I’ll never forget.”
The firm’s innovative Air-Pot container system is manufactured from recycled HDPE and is designed to enhance root structure, improve plant health and support more sustainable growing practices worldwide.
Used by commercial growers, nurseries, botanical gardens, research institutions and home growers globally, the system is proven to deliver significantly increased growth and long-term plant performance.
Now in its seventh iteration, with the Air-Pot® 7 range, its technology continues to evolve, with the company expanding both its product range and international reach.
Approved by His Majesty The King, the award places the Scottish company among the UK’s most respected exporters and grants use of the King’s Award Emblem until 2031. The King’s Award for Enterprise is the UK’s most prestigious business honour and is widely recognised as a mark of excellence.
The award will formally be presented in Scotland to the company at a later date by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh.

Andy Burnham appointed Prime Minister: Response from the HTA
In response to the appointment of Andy Burnham MP as Prime Minister, Fran Barnes, Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) Chief Executive, said: "We look forward to working with Andy Burnham as the new Prime Minister, as well as his Cabinet and wider government, as we face a period of both opportunity and challenge for environmental horticulture. The priority now must be to create the right conditions that allow British businesses to truly grow, invest and thrive.
“As a sector worth £38 billion and supporting 722,000 jobs, taking action on the cost crisis our members have been facing into for too long is essential. The new Prime Minister and Chancellor must match their ambition for economic growth with practical actions that will give our members certainty and confidence. That means tackling rising costs, easing unnecessary regulatory burdens and creating the right environment for investment.
“Prime Minister Burnham is walking into Number 10 during a summer of extreme weather, as water companies across the country implement water restrictions that directly impact our retailers, growers, landscapers and their customers. At a time when plants, trees and green infrastructure are increasingly vital for helping communities adapt to climate change, it cannot be overstated that the businesses producing, planting and maintaining them have the water security they need. This underlines the urgent need for a national water resilience strategy, accelerated investment in new reservoirs and greater support for horticultural businesses to access the funding and planning needed to improve water storage and resilience.
“Environmental horticulture is uniquely placed to present solutions to many of the challenges the new Prime Minister faces. We create rewarding green careers that can help tackle youth unemployment, our plants and trees improve health and wellbeing, and green infrastructure is essential for building climate resilience and making our towns and cities more liveable.
“The sector and the country are at a crossroads. The decisions taken in the coming months will shape the future of both our sector and the wider economy. Once again, we congratulate Andy Burnham and look forward to working constructively with the Prime Minister and his government to unlock the full potential of British horticulture and build a positive future relationship with the sector."

One of Britain's leading wholesale nurseries celebrated the people at the heart of its family-run business when it welcomed Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester to its Hereford site last week (July 13, 2026).
From long-serving team members and apprentices to propagation specialists and production teams, the visit highlighted the knowledge and commitment of those behind Wyevale Nurseries.
Heather Williamson, Chairman of Wyevale Nurseries, which was started by her grandfather Harry Williamson and celebrates its 96th anniversary in business this year, explained: “It was a great pleasure to welcome HRH The Duchess of Gloucester and to share an insight into the work that takes place here daily and the people who do it.
“The day was all about our incredible team, which made it so special. We were incredibly proud to introduce The Duchess to colleagues from every part of the nursery and to showcase the enthusiasm, expertise and commitment they bring to our business and to British horticulture every day.
“Her Royal Highness saw firsthand how passionate the people who work here are. As a family business with deep roots in British horticulture, this was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our heritage, our people and our vision for the future.”
During the tour, The Duchess of Gloucester saw key areas of the site, learning all about Wyevale Nurseries’ growing operations, in-house propagation and environmental initiatives and spent time meeting team members from across the nursery.
Harry Downes, Quality Assistant Manager, who guided Her Royal Highness through the nursery’s propagation facilities, said: “It was a real honour to be chosen to show The Duchess around our in-house propagation unit and explain how we produce so much of our stock ourselves. She was lovely to speak with, showed an interest in both the plants and the people who grow them, and asked thoughtful questions throughout her time with us.”
The Duchess also enjoyed getting hands-on during a session in The Potting Shed with Potting Assistant Manager, Sam Lloyd.
Sam, who demonstrated operations, explained: “Her Royal Highness was incredibly engaged and enthusiastic. Everyone she met was as equally excited to speak with her as I was and it was a truly memorable experience for everybody.”
To mark the occasion, The Duchess joined Heather and Managing Director, Andy Johnson in the planting of a commemorative tree, a Pyrus chanticleer, at the nursery. A Sorbus torminalis, Wild Service Tree, grown at Wyevale Nurseries in Herefordshire was gifted to Her Royal Highness to be sent on in cooler weather, creating lasting symbols of the occasion and the company’s commitment to tree planting and growing for future generations.

Andy added: “Our people are our greatest strength. This visit gave them the opportunity to demonstrate not only their knowledge and professionalism but also the innovation and sustainable growing practices that continue to shape the future of British horticulture.
“Her Royal Highness’ visit was a valuable chance to shine a spotlight on the contribution horticulture makes to the environment, communities and the wider economy. More importantly, it allowed us to celebrate the experienced and dedicated people who make our business successful and well respected in our industry.
“Everyone involved in the day was immensely proud to represent Wyevale Nurseries and it was rewarding to see their professionalism and enthusiasm recognised in such a meaningful way.”

Leading online plant retailer behind Hedges Direct and Simply Plants gains nationally recognised Plant Healthy certification
HD Plants Ltd, the company behind leading online retailer Hedges Direct, is proud to announce that it has achieved Plant Healthy certification, the UK's leading plant health management standard.
The certification demonstrates HD Plants Ltd's commitment to maintaining the highest standards of biosecurity, plant sourcing, growing practices and plant health management across its operations.

The best of last week's
If you missed last week's GTN Xtra, below are the most-read stories...

After a short battle with pancreatic cancer, Andy Bunker has sadly died aged 63.
An industry legend himself, especially when it came to plants. Andy was always happy to give a view and share his opinions and knowledge, he will be missed by his family, colleagues and customers alike.
Derek Bunker told GTN Xtra: "I worked with Andy by my side at Alton Garden Centre for 48 years. He left school at 15 and started running our warehouse, set up the garden machinery department and as a family member became plants manager. From knowing nothing about plants he grew into the role and as well as becoming a plants buyer for the Tillington Group and latterly British Garden Centres he also became a renowned judge for RHS Plant Trials and Glee New Product Awards.
Our condolences and thoughts are with the Bunker family at this sad time.
If you would like to add your tribute to Andy please use the comment link below or e-mail trevor@pottingshedpress.co.uk
Ian Hodgson, Editor at Large: Garden News magazine writes:
The sad news of Andy’s passing has come as a complete shock and I send my sincere condolences to his family. I will really miss his wise and often wry, good-humoured council at GLEE and at other events where we had occasion to meet. A lifetime of experience in the garden centre trade, and his passion for plants enabled him to instinctively know just what the customer wanted. You can’t teach that. A huge loss to the industry.

A new canopy installed by all-weather specialists, Fordingbridge, is helping Craft Nurseries in Manningtree, Essex maximise the appeal of a recently launched family attraction by ensuring year-round usability.
The family-run garden centre has invested in a new mini racetrack to complement its popular play barn, widen its family offer, and encourage visitors to stay longer and come more frequently.

A new bespoke canopy designed, manufactured and installed by Fordingbridge will now ensure the imaginative new facility can be used in all four seasons. A 12m x 19m barrel-vaulted canopy shelters young drivers and spectators from downpours and cold weather conditions, while unique Opal 60 roofing also protects racers and cars from harmful UV rays and prolonged sun exposure in bright summer months. With young drivers now able to take to the track whatever the forecast, the installation ensures family fun remains firmly in pole position throughout the seasons.

The Craft Nurseries project reflects a growing trend for garden centres to invest in family-orientated attractions that help broaden their appeal beyond traditional retail offers. Fordingbridge is also seeing a growing demand for family orientated design details across the sector including covered walkways, hybrid all-weather indoor / outdoor dining facilities and solar panel car ports with charging stations for electric family cars.

If you’d be interested in exploring how you can drive year-round family appeal at your garden centre, get in touch with Fordingbridge’s team today.

Blue Diamond Garden Centres is celebrating exceptional success at the inaugural RHS Badminton Flower Show 2026, following an outstanding week that saw both its sponsored Show Garden and its own Floral Marquee exhibit recognised with the highest honours by the Royal Horticultural Society.
The Blue Diamond-sponsored Show Garden, 'Where Grief Grows Quiet', designed by Sophie Leo in support of Maggie's, was awarded an RHS Gold Medal, together with the ‘Best Construction Award’ and ‘Best Young Garden Designer of the Year Award 2026’.

The remarkable Show Garden by Sophie Leo has been recognised by the RHS judges as one of the standout exhibits of the inaugural show. Created as a peaceful sanctuary for reflection, healing and hope, Where Grief Grows Quiet explores how gardens can provide comfort during life's most difficult moments. Its thoughtful planting palette, natural materials and beautifully crafted landscape have resonated strongly with both judges and visitors alike.
Blue Diamond Garden Centres were proud to sponsor the project as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting emerging horticultural talent and recognising the positive impact gardens can have on wellbeing.

Adding to the celebrations, Blue Diamond's own exhibit in the Floral Marquee was also awarded an RHS Gold Medal.Designed and constructed entirely by Blue Diamond's show team, and designed by Blue Diamond’s Anna King, the award-winning display featured exclusively home-grown plants from the company's six UK nurseries, showcasing the quality, expertise and craftsmanship behind the more than 13 million British-grown plants produced annually for its garden centres.
Jill Kerr, Group Relationship Manager for Blue Diamond Garden Centres, said: "This has been an incredible show for everyone at Blue Diamond Garden Centres. We are absolutely delighted for Sophie and everyone involved in bringing 'Where Grief Grows Quiet' to life. Winning an RHS Gold Medal is an incredible achievement, but to also receive the Best Construction Award and Best Young Garden Designer of the Year makes this an exceptional success.
"Receiving an RHS Gold Medal for our own Floral Marquee exhibit is also a tremendous achievement and a wonderful recognition of the passion, expertise and dedication of our nursery and show team. Plants in the display were grown by Blue Diamond in our UK nurseries, making this award especially meaningful for everyone involved."
Designer Sophie Leo added: "Creating 'Where Grief Grows Quiet' has been an incredibly personal and rewarding journey. To receive this recognition from the RHS is overwhelming, and I'm so grateful to Blue Diamond Garden Centres, Maggie's, the construction team and everyone who helped make this garden a reality."
The celebrations may not be over just yet. The garden is now in the running for the People's Choice Award, voted for by visitors to the inaugural RHS Badminton Flower Show. The winner will be announced on Friday 10 July, with everyone involved at Blue Diamond Garden Centres, Maggie's and the show team keeping their fingers firmly crossed for one final accolade.
Visitors who were unable to attend the show will also have the opportunity to see the award-winning garden when Where Grief Grows Quiet features on BBC Gardeners' World on Friday 10 July at 9.00pm on BBC Two, bringing Sophie's inspiring design and its powerful message to a national television audience.
Following the show, Sophie will donate plants from the garden to Maggie's centres across the UK, helping to extend the garden's legacy and provide beautiful, restorative spaces for the hundreds of people affected by cancer who visit Maggie's every day.
Blue Diamond Garden Centres congratulates Sophie Leo, Maggie's, the construction team and everyone involved in delivering both award-winning exhibits. This remarkable success reflects the exceptional talent, craftsmanship and horticultural excellence showcased throughout the inaugural RHS Badminton Flower Show and marks another proud milestone for Blue Diamond Garden Centres.

Autumn POS planning should start before the leaves fall

Advice from Mark Moseley, Handy’s Sales & Marketing Director at Handy
For garden machinery dealers and retailers, autumn planning should not start when the leaves begin to fall. It should start before then.
That is the advice from Mark Moseley, Sales & Marketing Director at Handy, who believes retailers can make more of the autumn sales period by preparing their product displays, seasonal messaging and add-on sales opportunities early.
“Autumn is a very practical selling season,” says Mark. “Customers are not always browsing in the same way they might in spring. They often have a job they need to get done. Leaves need clearing, hedges need tidying, logs need cutting and lawns need preparing for winter. The easier retailers make that journey, the more confident customers will feel when buying.”
According to Mark, the best autumn displays are not just about putting machines on show. They should help customers understand the full solution.
“A customer looking at a blower may also need a garden refuse bag, a spare collection bag, a lawn sweeper or a wheelbarrow. Someone buying a chainsaw may need chain oil, fuel cans, safety equipment or a saw horse. These are natural add-on sales, but they only happen if the customer can see the connection.”
Help customers shop by task
Mark recommends that dealers think less about product categories and more about the jobs customers are trying to complete.
A Leaf Clearing Zone could bring together blowers, blower vacuums, lawn sweepers, wheelbarrows, refuse bags and spare collection bags.
A Log Cutting & Splitting Display could feature chainsaws, pruning saws, log splitters, saw horses, chain oil, fuel cans and safety kits.
Autumn Garden Clear-Up Bay could include hedge trimmers, long-reach hedge trimmers, shredders, pruning tools and garden clearing products.
“Simple seasonal messages can make a big difference,” says Mark. “Something like ‘Clear leaves faster’, ‘Prepare logs for winter’ or ‘Tidy hedges before the cold weather’ helps customers connect the product to the job they need to do.”
Make the display do more of the selling
Autumn customers are often practical buyers. They may not know the exact product they need, but they know the problem they want to solve.
That is where good POS can support both the customer and the dealer.
“Displays should answer three simple questions,” says Mark. “What job does this product help me do? Is it right for my garden? What else do I need to complete the task?”
Good, better and best options can also help customers make quicker decisions. For example, a retailer could display an entry-level electric blower, a cordless blower for convenience and a blower vacuum for customers who want to collect and shred leaves. The same approach can work across chainsaws, hedge trimmers, log splitters and pressure washers.
Do not hide the accessories
Mark also encourages retailers to give parts and accessories a stronger presence during autumn.
“Oils, spark plugs, fuel cans, safety kits, chainsaw accessories and replacement bags should not be hidden away. When they are placed next to the machines they support, customers are more likely to buy everything they need in one visit.”
For dealers, this can help increase basket value while also improving the customer experience.
“No one wants to get home with a new machine and then realise they are missing something important. A good display helps prevent that.”
Plan early, sell with confidence
Handy’s Autumn Promotions 2026 have been created to help trade customers prepare for seasonal demand, with promotional pricing across key autumn categories including chainsaws, log splitters, blowers, vacuums, hedge trimmers, shredders, scarifiers, pressure washers, spare parts, oils and accessories. The promotion also includes extended payment terms on qualifying orders placed before the end of October, helping dealers/retailers stock up with more confidence ahead of the season.
“The retailers who plan early are usually the ones who make the most of the season,” says Mark. “It gives them time to secure stock, brief their teams, prepare displays and put the right products in front of customers before demand peaks.”
Whether customers are clearing leaves, cutting logs, tidying hedges, shredding garden waste or preparing lawns for winter, Mark’s message is simple.
“Autumn planning starts now. The right stock, the right display and the right advice can turn seasonal jobs into stronger sales.”

Headline keynote speakers, more than 20 expert-led seminars, two dedicated content stages and the return of the Glee New Products Showcase make Glee 2026 one of the industry's most valuable destinations for business insight as well as buying.
Visitors to Glee 2026 can now start planning their visit, with organisers unveiling a packed three-day content programme spanning Centre Stage and the Feed Your Business Stage. Taking place from 8th-10th September at the NEC Birmingham, the agenda has been carefully curated to tackle the biggest commercial opportunities and challenges facing modern garden retail.
Alongside Europe's biggest buying moment – which sees Glee co-locate with Autumn Fair for two days – visitors can also look forward to the return of the hugely popular Glee New Products Showcase, providing an exclusive first look at the latest launches, breakthrough innovations and retail solutions set to shape the seasons ahead.

Together, the seminar programme and New Products Showcase reinforce Glee's position as far more than a trade exhibition, offering buyers the opportunity to source new products, discover emerging trends, hear from industry leaders and take away practical ideas to help their businesses thrive.
Business insight for every retailer
Built around themes including market insight, leadership, people, productivity, sustainability, customer engagement, food and hospitality, and innovation, the programme ensures every visitor can tailor their experience to the areas most relevant to their business.
Centre Stage will welcome many of the industry's biggest names, including an exclusive keynote interview with David Robinson, CEO of Dobbies Garden Centres, who will discuss leading one of the UK's best-known garden centre businesses through a period of transformation, sharing his thoughts on leadership, customer expectations, investment and the future of the sector.

The programme begins with Laura Loveridge and Harry Redman from the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), who will present 'The State of Garden Retail: What the Data Is Really Telling Us',providing exclusive insight into the latest consumer trends, market performance and opportunities shaping the industry. Retail productivity also comes under the spotlight as Vanessa Cranford, Phil Wright and Josh Novell of Polhill Garden Centre demonstrate how better use of business data can improve operational efficiency and profitability, while Michael Perry (Mr Plant Geek) returns with his ever-popular Future Plants Walking Tour across all three days.
Wednesday sees Sam Dickson, Managing Director of Squire's Garden Centres, reflect on his first year leading the business, alongside practical discussions around smarter water management featuring Wave and the National Trust. Whilst, on Thursday, James Shorey from Planet Mark joins George Hillier to explore how Hillier is successfully combining lower carbon with lower costs, before Floral Thursday rounds off the programme with fundraising and celebrations in support of the Greenfingers Charity.
Spotlight on food and hospitality
Reflecting the growing importance of hospitality within modern garden centres, the dedicated Feed Your Business Stage returns with practical sessions designed to help operators maximise the commercial potential of their catering and food retail operations.
Sessions will cover topics including coffee trends, menu engineering, restaurant design, food safety, staffing, customer experience and creating food propositions that drive footfall, loyalty and profitability. Supporting Glee's expanded Food Hall and Food & Beverage sectors, the stage provides specialist insight for businesses looking to grow one of garden retail's fastest-expanding revenue streams.
More than a buying event
From discovering tomorrow's bestselling products within the Glee New Products Showcase to hearing from the industry's leading retailers, researchers and innovators, Glee 2026 combines buying with business learning like no other event in the sector.

GIMA council pays tribute to industry champion Andy Bunker

The Garden Industry Manufacturers Association (GIMA) joins the wider horticultural community in mourning the loss of Andy Bunker, remembering a trusted colleague, generous mentor and friend whose influence and kindness left a lasting mark on the industry he worked in for nearly 50 years.
GIMA council members were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Andy Bunker, who died on 13th July 2026 at the age of 63, following a short battle with pancreatic cancer. A widely respected and much‑loved figure across UK garden retail, Andy’s loss will be felt throughout the industry.
For nearly five decades, Andy was synonymous with Alton Garden Centre, having joined his father Derek in the business at just 15 years old. In his role as plant manager, Andy shaped the centre’s horticultural identity and built a reputation for deep expertise, clear judgement and unwavering commitment to quality.
His knowledge extended far beyond Alton, serving as a buyer for the Tillington Group and, more recently, joining the British Garden Centres plant buying team following the group’s acquisition of Alton in March this year.
Andy’s contribution to the wider industry was equally significant. Over many years he became a familiar and valued presence across the horticultural sector; lending his expertise to RHS Plant Trials, offering thoughtful and fair judgement as part of the GIMA Awards and Glee judging panels, supporting the Greenfingers Charity, speaking at industry events, contributing regularly to garden trade media, and competing enthusiastically in the golf days that brought so many colleagues together.

Warm reflections from the GIMA Council
GIMA Council members shared the following tributes to Andy Bunker:
Mark Butler of Vitax said: “I have known Andy for many years; he was one of the nicest people you could meet – a Greenfingers Charity ambassador and a big supporter of the GIMA golf day. I have many fond memories of visiting him at the garden centre throughout my career but the fondest would be the numerous golf days he organised on behalf of Alton Garden Centre and the fun we had in the evenings as a group of golfers.”
GIMA Vice-President, Nigel Thompson of Sipcam commented: “My main recent dealings with Andy were as a new products judge at Glee. He was a great judge and quite daunting to face, if I’m honest! I remember catching his face once after I answered a question and it was great – a bit of a ‘Mona Lisa’ moment in that I couldn’t work out if he was agreeing or disagreeing with my response. He will be missed by our trade and I’m sure his legacy will live on. Thinking of his family and close friends at this time.”
GIMA Director Martin Ward concluded: “Andy embodied everything that is good about our industry – generosity, expertise, humour and a genuine love of plants and people. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone who had the pleasure of working alongside him.”

Everyone at Greenfingers Charity is deeply saddened by the passing of Andy Bunker, a very dear friend of the charity and someone who has been a much-loved part of the Greenfingers family for many years.
Andy was one of those rare people who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His kindness, generosity and love for those around him were at the heart of who he was.
Boyd Douglas-Davies, Chairman of the Greenfingers Charity, said: “Andy was a great personal friend for many years, and someone who meant a great deal to all of us at Greenfingers. He was kind, generous and always willing to support us in whatever way he could.
“Andy had a wonderful ability to connect people and make them feel part of something special. Through Garden Re-Leaf Day, the 24 hour plant-athon, his support of our events and the many introductions he made on our behalf, Andy helped strengthen the community around Greenfingers in a way that will have a lasting impact.
“He understood that our gardens are about so much more than plants and design. They provide moments of comfort and connection for children and families when they need them most. Andy believed wholeheartedly in helping us create those moments, we will always be grateful for the memories and the legacy he leaves behind.
“Our thoughts are very much with Andy’s family, friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
