Dobbies has opened two new outlet stores at its branches in Morpeth in Northumberland and Atherstone in Warwickshire.

The outlet stores stock products from across its homeware; outdoor living; gifts, kids and pets; and gardening ranges with discounts between 30-70% off their usual price.

At Atherstone, the outlet is located in a separate on-site building while Morpeth’s outlet is located near its restaurant within the footprint of the main store with a standalone pay point.

Paul Travis Anderson, General Manager of Dobbies Morpeth, said: “This is the first time we’ve had a dedicated outlet in Morpeth and we feel really positive about being able to offer discounts across a number of ranges for our customers.”

Sarah Faulkner, General Manager of Dobbies Atherstone, added: “We’ll be replenishing stock frequently, so there’s lots of opportunities for customers to get some fantastic bargains. With spring just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of price reductions across a wide selection of our products.”

The outlet stores are open 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday; 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday.

It’s fair to say that the DCUK brand has gone from strength to strength. Brand advertising and regular emails (sent to a passionate fanbase of collectors) has seen incredible levels of interest.

Their commitment to customer service has seen them awarded a coveted Gold Award by Feefo in record time. And, the amount of fresh DCUK marketing activity, brand awareness, and point of sale support have all been important elements of the company’s progress.

As a result, they urgently need more official UK stockists, helping to make the most of the incredibly high customer demand and enthusiasm that’s out there for the DCUK brand. The recent Spring Fair show at the Birmingham NEC proved to be a positive platform for talking to potential new stockists, as well as existing customers.

The DCUK stand was busy again this year, with visitors taking the opportunity to talk to the team, as well as enjoying imaginative displays of the latest ranges. Based on the number of people taking photos and selfies, one of the biggest hits was their Wild Welly Penguins display. Alongside the cute character boots, the display included an indoor bubble wall water feature that provided a memorable backdrop.

Almost as striking, the British Flower Ducklings on their patterned pedestals created a lot of interest too. Back by popular demand, the Flower Ducklings were a big hit with customers looking for them to sell strongly as part of Mother’s Day and Easter displays.

These were joined by some other new additions, including colourful Rainy Day Duckys, collectable Hedglets in gift boxes, baby Puffins (sorry, Pufflings) new designs for the best-selling Baking Duckling range, and several tartan-themed characters.

LOFA, the Leisure and Outdoor Furniture Association, has announced two new appointments to its board of directors. Steve Millington has been voted in as the new Chairman, and Alwyn Williams as the new Vice Chair.

The new leadership team is focused on the future of LOFA and recognises the need for change and innovation. Steve and Alwyn are committed to enhancing the organisation's benefits to its members and working towards future-proofing the association.

Steve Millington, Sales Director at Tom Chambers, brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having been involved in a range of industry projects and steering groups over the course of his career. With a comprehensive understanding of all types of retailers related to the sector, including e-commerce, Steve is ideally placed to help LOFA adapt to the changing needs of its members.

Steve's journey in the garden industry began at Ward Pots in 1984, where he worked for six years before moving to Sankey Pots. There, he quickly transitioned into National Accounts and Sales Management before joining Westland in 2002 as the Northern Sales Manager. After six years with Westland, Steve moved to CPL (Coal Products Ltd), where he developed their Garden & DIY sales in a £5m division from a standing start. In 2012, he was approached by Bosmere Products and offered the role of Sales Director. During his time at Bosmere, he served on the GIMA council and became president in 2014. In 2018, Steve joined Tom Chambers and became Sales Director in 2020. He has been a part of the LOFA council for the past four years and became Vice President alongside Pravin Patel in 2023.

Meanwhile, Alwyn Williams, the Head of Business Support at Zest, a leading outdoor garden furniture and timber products specialist, has been appointed as the Vice-Chair of LOFA. He has three decades of experience in the garden industry and has worked at Zest and its parent company, P&A Group, for thirty years. He started his career in production and then moved on to the commercial side of the business in 2002, where he oversaw all aspects of new product development, procurement, sales, and distribution. Later, in 2011, as the Head of Sales and Business Development, he played a vital role in transitioning Zest from using sales agents to developing a full-time national salesforce team. Alwyn's experience has helped Zest grow into a multi-million-pound company, and he has been a key part of the brand development team, which repositioned Zest as the go-to brand for outdoor leisure in 2022.

Steve and Alwyn both have vast knowledge of the outdoor leisure industry and are eager to get started in their new roles alongside their fellow members of the LOFA council, including Hannah Brown, Luke Hopkins, Andrew Hutchison, Julian Windsor, Chris Newman, Stephen Davies, Tim Pennell, and Ben Forte. The new appointments signal a positive and exciting change for LOFA, together, they will work towards the common goal of driving innovation, improving member benefits, and securing LOFA's position as a leading authority in the outdoor leisure industry.

Cancer-free Kev to run a half marathon in his wellies

Leon Boots director Kevin Burgess is celebrating 40 years cancer free after he was diagnosed with cancer as a teenager. He is putting himself through his paces training to run the London Landmarks Half Marathon in his wellies to raise vital funds and awareness for a charity close to his heart.

At just 15, Kev was diagnosed with cancer. Following his diagnosis on 8th October 1984, which ironically is the date his daughter’s birthday, born 14 years later, he attended the old St Micheals Childrens hospital to start his chemotherapy. This treatment lasted until the end of 1985, and involved six lumbar punctures, two endoscopies and a colonoscopy.

Despite having the odds stacked against him in this way and being told at 20 with his ever present, supportive (Kendra) wife they may not be able to have children, Kev went on to have an enriching life, both personally and professionally.

He has since completed an incredible 17 challenges for Young Lives vs Cancer, including 10 challenges in one year! He has also started his own Welly boot (www.lbcboots.com) brand with his son (Charlie) in 2018 which he will be running in on 7th April and has also became a granddad to his first grandchild baby Elora born in December 2023.

Dobbies has appointed Andy Hannan as Commercial Director.

With extensive experience from across the retail sector, Andy will lead the delivery of Dobbies’ commercial strategy as it enters its new financial year.

Andy has previously held senior commercial roles at retailers such as Homebase, Halfords, Jessops and Argos, where he was part of the team that led the digital transformation of the business. Also within the B2B sector at LKQ Euro Car Parts.

Departing Commercial Director, Richard Hodges has stepped down from his role which he has held since 2021.

David Robinson, CEO of Dobbies, said: “Andy is a really experienced commercial director and will bring with him brilliant knowledge from his time at other major UK retailers.

“As we move into our new financial year, someone with Andy’s depth and breadth of experience is just what we need to ensure we are well positioned to further develop our commercial success. He is a really experienced operator and will be an asset to the team.

“I’d also like to thank Richard for his hard work and commitment over the last two years. In his time at Dobbies, he has delivered a number of successful partnerships and been integral in instilling a positive culture across the business. He leaves with our very best wishes for the future.”

What I am most grateful for is the opportunity to partner with so many talented, smart and kind people throughout my journey. I wish everyone at Dobbies all the best for spring and beyond.”

Lawn Association chairman calls for lawn chemicals ban

David Hedges-Gower, chairman of the Lawn Association and a renowned authority on sustainable lawn care, has made a passionate appeal for a nationwide ban on all pesticides used in lawn maintenance...

David Hedges-Gower, chairman of the Lawn Association and a renowned authority on sustainable lawn care, has made a passionate appeal for a nationwide ban on all pesticides used in lawn maintenance.

Hedges-Gower proposes an initial restriction within the retail sector, with the ultimate aim of implementing a comprehensive ban across the entirety of the country.

In his statement, Hedges-Gower raised concerns about the harmful effects of pesticides commonly sold in garden centres, arguing that they often fail to deliver on their promises and are frequently misused or overused due to their weakened potency. He further criticized the excessive reliance on herbicides within the UK's lawn care industry, attributing this to misinformation surrounding the selection of cattle feed grass species.

Drawing attention to the natural growth patterns of grass, Hedges-Gower explained that native grasses spread horizontally, effectively filling in gaps and resisting weed intrusion. However, he lamented that the promotion of vertically growing grass species such as ryegrass since the 1990s has led to widespread failures, leaving lawns vulnerable to weed infestation.

In contrast, Hedges-Gower highlighted the success of golf courses and natural countryside landscapes, which thrive without extensive weed control measures by utilizing grass species that are well-suited to their environments.

The Lawn Association, an esteemed educational platform, aims to debunk prevalent myths surrounding lawn care while advocating for environmentally responsible practices. Hedges-Gower emphasised: "There is simply no justification for the use of pesticides in the vast majority of gardens. Implementing a nationwide ban would address numerous environmental concerns associated with their indiscriminate application."

In conclusion, Hedges-Gower reaffirmed: "Lawns are intended to be natural and vibrant expressions of our environment. Through proper plant selection and maintenance practices, we can achieve healthy, pesticide-free lawns throughout the UK."

A big year for the Greenfingers garden builds

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at Greenfingers, provides an update on those gardens that are currently underway across the country..

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at Greenfingers, provides an update on those gardens that are currently underway across the country.

The Nook – Norfolk

The new garden at The Nook, part of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, has been several years in the planning and is just part of a hugely ambitious long-term vision for the hospice’s entire landscape. Officially opened by HRH, The Duchess of Cambridge in 2019, The Nook is East Anglia’s Children Hospice’s (EACH) most recently introduced site, and its masterplan garden design has been created by Gold-medal winning designer, and Greenfingers Patron, Anne-Marie Powell.

The Rest & Reflect Garden is the first garden space to be completed at the hospice, with the official groundbreaking taking place just six months ago by the incredible team at Stewart Landscapes.  This stunning new garden space has been designed to offer tranquil, sensory spaces, with pockets of quiet, private areas where patients and their families can spend quality time together.

The creation of the Rest & Reflect Garden has been made possible thanks to the incredible generosity of the many Greenfingers Charity’s supporters, including Clarins, the Leisure and Outdoor Furniture Association (LOFA), the National Garden Scheme, Evergreen Garden Care, Rose Press Garden, Ann-Marie Powell and many others, who all came together to help bring this garden to life.

The official opening of this special garden will take place in the summer.

Demelza Hospice – Sittingbourne, Kent

25 years ago, Demelza Hospice Care for Children in Sittingbourne, was the site of the first-ever Greenfingers garden. Now, a quarter of a century later, a second garden has been created, using the incredibly skilled designers, Andrew Fisher Tomlin & Dan Bowyer, from the multi-award-winning garden designers, Fisher Tomlin & Bowyer.

Using Andrew and Dan’s vision, it has been the team at Baylis Landscape that have worked hard over the last few months to ensure the garden is accessible for all.  As with all Greenfingers gardens, the new garden at Demelza Hospice provides complete accessibility to ensure that all the patients can access and enjoy the space, which features many wildlife-attracting elements, including a fabulous ‘bug hotel’, kindly donated by Tom Massey from the RHS Chelsea garden he designed for the Entomological Society!

We’re also incredibly grateful to the many supporters and volunteers who have donated products or devoted time to the project, including Clarins UK, Taylors Bulbs, Rolawn, Deco-Pak, Evergreen Garden Care, Tom Massey, The Royal Entomological Society - as well as Millbrook Garden Centres and our hardworking Chairman and Trustees, Sue Allen, Tammy Woodhouse, Richard  Claxton and his wife Cheryl.

Like The Nook, the official opening date for Demelza’s new garden will be confirmed shortly.

Derian House, Chorley

The Greenfingers garden at Derian House in Chorley, designed by Chris Forshaw, began the transformation in autumn 2022 and now, finally, the official opening is on the horizon.

Once a tired courtyard, the entire space has been transformed and access has been reinvented to ensure the privacy of those that use the bedrooms overlooking the space.  Tackling this issue has been the key priority of Chris’ design, where a mixture of interactive zones have been designed to link together via a central covered space. Imaginative and subdued lighting and extra seating, which maintains the privacy for bedrooms overlooking the garden, have also been incorporated into the design.

Acorn Children’s Hospice, Walsall

Currently at the concept design stage, this new garden has seen the team from VaRa Garden Design return to the Greenfingers fold. Having previously created the 60th Greenfingers garden at Rainbow’s Hospice for Children and Young People, the VaRa team is hoping to use this experience to create yet another vital garden space for children and families to enjoy.

Chestnut Tree Hospice, Arundel

The Chestnut Tree Hospice has previously enjoyed a Greenfingers garden, having received a stunning Woodland Walk in 2014.  The introduction of a new Kitchen Garden is being funded by a generous private donor. Currently this new chapter for Chestnut Tree’s outside space is at the design tender stage, with four designers vying to take the design from the page into a living, breathing garden space.

Hope House, Oswestry

Within a new masterplan for the entire hospice site – created by Carolyn Willits of award-winning CW Studios. Greenfingers has committed to designing and building ‘The Gathering Heart’ garden. This new space will feature a revamped play area and exciting, rich, horticultural elements.

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Sheffield

Work will begin shortly to refresh the small garden which leads from the hospice’s Primrose Suite - designed to ensure bereaved families have a therapeutic space that best reflects the stories that take place, and too often sadly end, inside the hospice doors.

In addition, the hospice has asked for the help of Greenfingers to create a new garden outside their Forget Me Not Suite.

Linda Petrons said: “There is no question that 2024 is going to be yet another busy year for the Greenfingers Charity. The enormity of what we do and the role our gardens play within these hospices is never lost on us, and we are endlessly grateful to everyone who fundraises, volunteers, provides gifts in kind and promotes the work of the charity. Every single one of you has helped to create these gardens. You have helped to ensure families have a space to enjoy precious moments together or where loved ones and hospice staff can remember those who fought so bravely. You’ve put smiles on the faces of children across the country and have helped to make each day special. Thank you for this, and thank you for your continued support.”

Experts offer advice on what makes a GCA Ruxley Rose plant area winner

A leading UK commercial grower that sponsored the Garden Centre Association’s Ruxley Rose Award – presented at the body’ annual conference – has revealed what makes a winning plant area.

The Wyevale Nurseries’ sponsored Best Overall Plant Area Ruxley Rose Award went to Cowell’s Garden Centre in the Destination Garden Centre (DGC) Category and Squires Garden Centre, Hersham in the Garden Centre (GC) Category.

Andy Johnson, Managing Director of Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford, says: “As a keen GCA Associate Member and a key supplier to garden centres nationwide, we were delighted to sponsor this prestigious award, which highlights not just garden centres with top quality, interesting plants, but those who take the trouble to display them well, to use good signage and information, to support and train staff, who are passionate about plants, and offer engaging and excellent customer care to those that need their advice and assistance.

“We’d like to congratulate Cowell’s and Squires, Hersham on their overall win and also to applaud the runners up in both categories for their hard work and commitment to outdoor plants too.”

The second and third place winners in the Destination Garden Centre Category were Perrywood Garden Centre, Tiptree and Aylett Nurseries and in the Garden Centre Category Perrywood Garden Centre, Sudbury and Squires Garden Centre, Woking.

After the first judging took place last spring, the top 10 highest scorers from across the country then received a second visit from GCA Inspector Alyson Haywood in the autumn to determine the winners of the overall Ruxley Rose competition in both categories, as announced at January’s conference.

She explains: “The Ruxley Rose competition focuses on determining which garden centres nationally have the best plant areas. What makes the best plant area? They are vibrant, colourful, places with comprehensive ranges of plants, which offer first-class quality, and are beautifully and innovatively presented, with cameo displays. They also provide great service to their customers from engaged and knowledgeable staff.

“In addition to this, it is important that the best are also immaculately clean and tidy, with no weeds or plant debris, and provide information and inspiration for all customers, from novices to more experienced ones.

“Cowell’s demonstrated a great range authority, superb plant quality, excellent presentation, and inspiration, all in addition to first class retail execution. Squires at Hersham offered a comprehensive outdoor plant range, outstanding quality, it was immaculately clean and tidy, with great presentation, and creative cameo displays to inspire customers. Both centres provided simple helpful plant information for all visitors too.”

Cowell’s Garden Centre and Squires Garden Centre, Hersham were presented with their awards on January 29 at the GCA’s 2024 annual conference in the Cotswolds.

GCA CEO, Peter Burks, adds: “Plants are the key product group for all serious garden centres, which is why we judge our top 10 centres in each turnover band every year to get a true reflection of the best, before amalgamating the scores to announce our overall, national Ruxley Rose winners.

“We are extremely grateful that a nursery such as Wyevale Nurseries, with such a great name and reputation in our industry, sponsors this award, which is undoubtedly the most coveted amongst our member garden centres.

“Wyevale Nurseries is highly respected by our members and is well-known for having very high standards in propagation, innovation, plant care and biosecurity. They’re the perfect pairing for this award!”

GCA Charity Day & Gala Dinner auction help raise more than £44,000

Members of the Garden Centre Association have raised more than £44,000 for three different charities at the organisation’s annual conference this year.

Delegates attending the event in the Cotswolds took part in a GCA Charity Day on the Sunday (January 28) as well as a fundraising raffle, draw and auction during the week.

GCA CEO Peter Burks explains: “We renamed our Sunday event as the ‘GCA Charity Day’ this year. During the day and, across the whole conference, we raised money for three worthy charities that work in our sector – Greenfingers, Perennial and The Colegrave Seabrook Foundation.

“In addition to the Sunday event, we ran a mega raffle. During the conference, there were envelopes placed at every seat and table. Everyone had the opportunity to buy a ticket for the value that they felt most comfortable with.

“We had activities on the Sunday and the day included a visit to Associate Member Melcourt Industries’ growing media facilities followed by a tour of the Ramsbury Brewery and Distillery.

“We had a fundraising quiz hosted by Guy Topping at Ramsbury on Sunday night and more than 60 people attended. The Cabbages, a team made up of members from suppliers, won the quiz beating the Pansies, the garden centres’ team. Proceeds from the money collected on the day went to the charities.

“We then raised £40,000 from our Tuesday night Gala Dinner draw, which included Evergreen Garden Care auctioning off its last peat-based Miracle-Gro compost bag – a piece of history. It went to Terry Head of Stewarts Garden Centres. Evergreen also donated 12 pallets of peat free compost to the winner and 24 pallets of Miracle-Gro for our grand draw.

“Ian Flounders from Woodlodge had his beard shaved off for charity too. We had a great conference and a fabulous Gala Dinner Tuesday evening, and lots of money was raised for our three chosen charities. Thank you to everyone who participated and donated so generously.”

When Haydon Walters from British Garden Centres’ Thatcham Garden Centre was crowned the winner of 2023’s Westland Horticulture sponsored Rising Stars recently applications also opened for this year’s programme too.

Haydon was declared the winner after his presentation was voted the best by delegates during the Garden Centre Association’s (GCA) annual conference in the Cotswolds last Monday (January 29).

GCA Inspector Gordon Emslie, who mentored the candidates throughout the process, says: “We had an excellent team of participants this year, who all delivered outstanding projects. Their personal journeys over the last eight months have been fantastic to witness where they all have learned so much about themselves. It has been a real privilege in getting the opportunity to watch them grow in their own self-belief and personal confidence. I am now really looking forward to meeting this year’s candidates.”

GCA garden centre members can nominate staff for the 2024 Rising Stars programme and all the details are on the organisation’s website.

A spokesperson from Westland Horticulture said: “We’ve been proud sponsors of the Rising Stars programme for the past 15 years. We’re very pleased it’s happening again in 2024, so if you have any budding ‘stars’ in your team, take a look at the application form.”

The closing date for entries is March 1, 2024.

Haydon explains: “I am delighted and could not be more grateful for everyone voting for my project. I would like to thank Westlands, GCA and British Garden Centres for allowing me this opportunity. It has been amazing getting to travel around the UK visiting unique places and getting to learn a huge amount. To my fellow Rising Stars who have been a massive support to me throughout the journey, thank you and I am going to miss you all. I have made some great friends.”

Haydon’s project was designed to enable young people and children to grow their own flowers and veg through a self-made activity book.

Amy Stubbs, Project and Development Manager at British Garden Centres, adds: “A huge congratulations to Haydon for winning the Rising Stars Award, the BGC family are so proud of him and our other team members who took part. It is a fantastic way to recognise new and up-and-coming staff in our industry who are already making a difference and promoting gardening in such an enthusiastic and positive way. I know that Haydon will go on to do great things, and well done to all the other highly commended entrants. I hope that the Rising Stars Award continues to encourage other young people to think about this sector as an opportunity to grow a career and develop.”

Haydon designed and produced all the content for his activity book and delivered five live onsite interactive growing sessions with children at the garden centre during the summer.

Gordon continues: “The success of his project was such that over 500 children in the Thatcham area experienced growing seedlings for themselves.

“I would like to congratulate all our finalists, Callum Spencer from Stewarts Broomhill, Warren Bolton, Thurrock Garden Centre, Shelly Harrison, Haskins Snowhill and Kerry Barrett, Upminster Garden Centre, British Garden Centres, for their dedication and enthusiasm throughout and for grasping the opportunity that Rising Stars gave them. They should all be very proud of their achievements.”

Once all the nominations are received on March 1, they will be reviewed, and the successful candidates will be invited to join the programme for 2024. They will be asked to take part in a series of workshops led by Gordon on topics such as retail disciplines, driving sales and financial awareness.

Their work will be assessed throughout the year to review the various elements on which they’ve received coaching.

The best performing finalists will be invited to the seventh workshop and will then be asked to the annual GCA Conference in January 2025, where they will present their projects to delegates. Gordon will also provide coaching in presentation skills in advance of the conference.

Peter Burks, GCA Chief Executive, says: “These young horticulturists were the stars of our conference. We had five amazing presentations, which everyone enthused about afterwards, it was very hard trying to decide who to vote for but in the end, Haydon won out and was awarded with the top title. His idea and the work he put into it was exceptional.”

Dame Zandra Rhodes on the future of fashion.

Spring Fair, the UK’s largest and most inspirational retail marketplace for Home, Gift and Fashion, closed on a high after four days of intensive buying, creativity and fun, and now looks ahead to its 75th anniversary in 2025.

Jackson Szabo, Portfolio Director, Spring Fair said, “I have been blown away by the energy, passion and community at Spring Fair during the last four days. The feedback and stories from buyers, exhibitors, and partners have highlighted just how integral this show is to the retail calendar. As well as the day job of buying, it enables the retail industry to come alive with inspiration, innovation, knowledge and networking. All of our new experiences and activations across the show floor, and the awe-inspiring content on the three stages, have been very well received and I’ve also loved the sense of fun our exhibitors bring – I’ve seen people dressed as sheep, sharks, dogs, naughty elves, and of course Peppa Pig!

“We’re now very excited to look forward to 2025 as we celebrate 75 years as the Home, Gift and Fashion industry’s most established and inventive buying show.”

Many exhibitors were celebrating milestone anniversaries this year, and were all hand delivered a birthday cake from Spring Fair organisers Hyve. Lotus Imports celebrates 60years, Verma Enterprises is 40, Enesco and Garden Trading are 30, Talking Tables celebrate 25 years, Laura Darrington Designs hit 20, Berni Parker Designs celebrates its 15th year, and Academie, Raspberry Blossom, Tache, Louise Tiler, Pickmotion, and Rush Design all reached double figures.

From Sunday to Wednesday, the UK’s longest serving retail show attracted thousands of buyers from retailers including John Lewis, Asda, Fortnum & Mason, Tesco, Aldi UK, Elphicks, Cards Galore, Costcutter, TK Maxx, Mint Velvet, RAF association, NEXT, World Duty Free, Squirrels UK, Yarnton Home and Garden, Claire’s Accessories, Willows Activity Farm, Smiffy’s, Clintons, Macmillan, Wayfair, Harrods, National Trust, Blue Diamond, Fenwick, Laura Ashley, Merlin Entertainment, WHSmith, RSPCA, Warner Bros, TJX Europe, Creaseys, Hallmark, Card Factory, B&Q, Costco, Natural History Museum, and Dobbies Garden Centre, Denby Retail, McElhinneys, and many more, all sourcing for new products and looking for the competitive edge.

Sue Waterhouse, Mia James Interiors said, “The show is beautiful. I've seen some fabulous new products, and some new accounts opened.”

Tracy Finch from Aurora Jewellery said, “Great experience, overwhelmed with so many great stands. First visit so will definitely spend more time to look around next year.”

The buying team from Northumbrian Water said, “Spring Fair is inspirational and varied - it sets your mind for the rest of the year. We also love the human element to it, the background stories of all the businesses.”

Kate Grindal, Retail Manager, Cadw said “Great to see many of our existing suppliers returning this year, it’s the perfect opportunity to catch up in one day.”

Tina Vaudin, Buyer, Creaseys said, "Spring Fair is a yearly staple in my diary.”

The licensing business delivered a big impact on the show floor with thousands of trend-led licensed products including gifts, collectables, toys, clothing, beauty and housewares featuring Disney characters, Harry Potter, Winnie the Pooh, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Marvel, Barbie, Paddington, Peter Rabbit, Frozen, Paw Patrol, Peppa Pig, Star Wars, as well as TV personalities such as Mary Berry, Olly Smith and interior household names including Terence Conran, Catherine Lansfield, Cath Kidston, Sara Miller, and William Morris.

Some of the exhibitors who brought their licensed products to life at the show include Widdop & Co, Captivate Brands, Pure Tabletop, Riva Home, TY UK, Whitehouse Leisure, Fizz Creations, Paladone, Sting in the Tale, Half Moon Bay, Lasgo, Star Images Enterprise, Blue Sky Studios, The English Ladies Co, Heroes Inc, Rock Off Retail, The Source Wholesale, The Carat Shop, Infinity Brands, Enesco, Pyramid International, Spike Leisurewear, Heathcote & Ivory and The English Soap Company.

Stephen Illingworth, Director, Widdop & Co said, “Spring Fair 2024 has been great with such a refreshing buzz, and it has re-emphasised its role as the biggest, best and only show in the UK for exhibitors and visitors alike to source the greatest range of all products to kick start the year!”

Feedback throughout the show indicated high quality footfall, new customers, and a buzzing atmosphere, with many exhibitors reporting their best show ever.

Simon Pykett, Country Manager, Bloomingville said, “It’s Bloomingville’s third year at Spring Fair, the first year was a phenomenal success, the second year was not quite as good but still very very good, but this year we’ve broken all records. The first day was good, the second day was absolutely out of this world, and today has also been good. We’re really hot on textiles at the show, along with vases and ceramics. Almost all of our orders are new clients which is perfect for us which is why we come.”

Richard Keel, Managing Director of Keel Toys said, “The footfall and orders across Sunday and Monday have been really good, we have opened a high number of new accounts. We are still smiling and have confirmed for Autumn Fair and Spring Fair for 2024/25.”

James Brindle, Sales Director at Fallen Fruits said, “The number of buyers who have visited us this year has been a lot better than last season, which is positive from our side because we have a lot more products to show. We are using the show as the launchpad for our new solar light brand Lumiz which we have brought here for the first time and as it has been extremely well received into the market. The show is so important as a launchpad because we have lots of different categories but also because we have a yearly cycle, we have an Autumn/Winter range and then we have our main core garden sundries for Spring Fair, so the show is perfect. We have been really surprised by the amount of new customers but we have also seen dormant customers returning to us this season.”

#SBS Village exhibitor and Pitch Live Gift winner Sally Deer from Ducky Zebra commented on how beneficial the Pitch Live experience has been to her business, “Winning Pitch Live is a huge achievement and I’m really happy. I have opened up 10-year accounts and I have also got several new genuine connections and leads so I am absolutely buzzing! These accounts range from children’s retailers who are experienced at buying childrenswear, but also very successful gifting shops, who have never tried baby clothes but saw our range and love it so much they decided to introduce it as a product type, which is exciting.”

Tom Willday, Willsow said, “It has been great, there is good footfall and we are enjoying lots of positivity at the show. We have launched our first licensed book "Shaun the Sheep " and are displaying our new plantable calendars which we have had brilliant feedback on. Everyone loved our children's product and wanted a more adult concept so we created it!”

Lauren Rooney, Hootyballoo by Club Green said, “We have had a really positive experience and lots of good feedback over the last few days. We are showing 10 new ranges and there has been an excitement in our buyers.”

Tracey Colliston, Owner, Ginger Betty said “The show has been really busy, there has been a good mix of international and UK buyers.  From independents to larger distributors. There has been a really positive, exciting vibe and it’s been really enjoyable.”

Jo Clarke, Owner and Creative Director, Toasted Crumpet said, “It’s been a really fantastic show, the busiest to date. A lot of our new product lines and ranges have had really good feedback. Our new product ‘Blanc’ has been particularly popular.”

Katherine Ebbs, UK Sales Manager, Joypots said, “This is the busiest Spring Fair since before Covid! There's been a good steady flow of great quality buyers during the course of the show and the environment is friendly with good vibes. Giving free teas and coffees to exhibitors is a lovely touch.”

Sean Johnson, General Manager, Quay Traders said, “We come to Spring Fair due to the variety of buyers, from independents to the big stores we all dream of. There has been a buzzing atmosphere with lots of new clients and there are lots of smiling faces.”

Katherine Khangurra, Owner, Libra Fine Arts (#SBS Village) said, “It’s been a fantastic experience at Spring Fair. We’ve met some wonderful potential stockists, and made connections that will last a long time.”

Bella from Bella Rosa Sticker Books said “Spring Fair has been a fantastic 'spring’ board for us a small, independent family run business. The opportunities for showcasing our products, networking, advertising, meeting potential buyers and generating leads have been plentiful! Communication and planning with the event organisers, Hyve has been seamless. We shall look forward to this exciting year ahead and will be sure to return for Spring Fair 2025!”

Innovative content partnerships with TikTok Shop, Google, and The Future Collective drew captivated crowds with an appetite to discover the next key trends and technologies impacting the retail sector. Delivering insights on topics ranging from AI and digital retail to conscious consumerism and licensing, and welcoming industry stalwarts such as Theo Paphitis, Spring Fair’s three new stages offered its most comprehensive schedule to date, across all four days all completely free to attend for all visitors.

Ginny Major, eCommerce Home & Living Category Manager, TikTok Shop Global said “Collaborating with Spring Fair has been essential in educating the industry about the value of TikTok Shop and the future of social commerce. We've made connections with so many remarkable businesses and eagerly await returning for Autumn Fair."

The line-up for the final day included a fireside chat with British fashion and textile designer and pioneer Dame Zandra Rhodes, more masterclasses covering creator collaborations, talent retention, customer reviews and AI on the Masterclass Studio in partnership with TikTok Shop; and an all-day trend takeover from The Future Collective on the Trend Talks stage. Retail Design For Better – For People, Planet & Business will welcome a host of exciting speakers presenting invaluable case studies on the principles of designing for better.

Dame Zandra Rhodes took to the Inspiring Retail Stage to a packed audience and talked through her journey in design with a career spanning over five decades. From launching her own collection of chiffon kaftans in 1969, opening her first store on Bond Street in 1977 to her many collaborations with the likes of Ikea and Happy Socks. Talking about her favourite collection Rhodes commented, “I loved my collections in the 70s with all the beautiful flowing chiffons. I have enjoyed the adventure into fashion and being involved in whole process of design.”

When asked what her stand out career moment was Rhodes said, “I really enjoyed dressing Freddie Mercury. He came to my studio in Bayswater in 1974. I put a white pleated top on him and told him to move around the room to see how he felt in it. This later became used in an iconic image that we still see everywhere today.”

Her thoughts on future of fashion, “I think the way the world is going, we have to think of everything being adjustable and use things in different way so they last. We can’t keep using the world’s resources. We need to treasure what we have and work with it.”

Offering advice to the visitors at Spring Fair, Rhodes said, “Never give up! The world might be changing so you hope we’d adapt to it. We have to take advantage of the opportunities that come along and run with it. You should always surround yourself with positive friends who encourage you to try new things and be experimental. It is better to aim for something and you might reach for the stars than regret it for the rest of your life.”

Inspiration continued on the Trend Talks stage championing pioneers shaping the retail industry’s future, as The Future Collective hosted the day’s sessions.

Opening the stage at 11am, The Future Collective’s Matt Parry and Kate Shepherd unpacked the core guiding principles of designing for better. Delving into the essence of design beyond aesthetics, and focusing on its potential to create positive change, they talked the audience through their top 10 guiding principles for incorporating empathy, responsibility, longevity, and collaboration to elevate design; making it a tool for social and environmental betterment.

Nick Reed, Founder of Neem London shared his story about the creation of his modern menswear brand, “Neem was created as an ‘antiseptic’ for fast fashion; to produce men's clothing that has been made with care, a result of a transparent supply chain, with the safe guarding of our environment as the focus. Neem products last longer and when they are worn, can be returned and recycled.”

On the subject of fashion seasons he said, “'The consumer isn’t driving seasonality it’s the retailer that drives it. In fashion we expect seasons. If seasons aren't forced on business, you aren’t forced to mark down. People panic because they only have a certain time to sell product.”

British design guru Nick Munro, whose exceptional achievements have been acknowledged with prestigious awards and coveted commissions, such as crafting silverware for the 2012 London Olympics and designing a teapot for HRH the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2013, and Ali Munro, unveiled their mission to enhance the air quality and energy efficiency of buildings - an inspiring step toward a healthier and more sustainable future.

In Retail Design for Better - Re-investing Fashion Waste Back into the Business, Barry Kane from Upcycle Labs presented how Upcycle Labs’ innovation in fashion waste and retail redundant store fittings have been openly embraced by leading fashion brands including Moncler, Dr Marten, and All Saints. Stock exits and customer returns can be shipped to their Euro Hub in Nottingham and 100% of the contents can be returned to the market as interior design goods, giftware, and new shop fittings without a fibre going to landfill or incineration. The revolutionary process provides a totally green solution to a massive worldwide problem.

The overarching ethos across the day’s sessions is how designing for better can be a force for good, influencing industries and societies worldwide, and harnessing creativity for a brighter future.

100% waterproof and vegan, they are made from natural rubber with a neoprene inner. Surprisingly lightweight they combine functionality with practicality. Around 40 stores in the UK are now stocking Merry People boots and the company is looking to expand into Northern Ireland.

Rust is the best-selling colour and is now sold out in all regions, while Oxford Blue and Tan is the UK’s favourite. New colours for 2024 include khaki and denim. Retail prices start from £59.95.

Gold for Hydrangea Living Little Rosy

The Koninklijke Vereniging voor Boskoopse Culturen (KVBC, Royal Association for Boskoop Cultures) presented a gold medal to breeder Alex Schoemaker for his Hydrangea paniculata Living Little Rosy...

The Koninklijke Vereniging voor Boskoopse Culturen (KVBC, Royal Association for Boskoop Cultures) presented a gold medal to breeder Alex Schoemaker at its annual meeting.

His Hydrangea paniculata Living Little Rosy received the prestigious award following the field inspection by the KVBC. In doing so, the KVBC also elected this Hydrangea as Best Novelty 2023.

The following text comes from the jury report: "Living Little Rosy® has a remarkably compact and regular growth habit and beautiful purple-red translucent flower panicles that are well proportioned to the plant size."

Field inspections are multi-year inspections in which the KVBC tests plants for growth and flowering characteristics over long periods. This contrasts with fair inspections, where plants are judged visually purely at one moment. Only exceptionally strong and healthy plants with good growth are eligible for a gold medal.

For Alex Schoemaker, this is the ninth medal in the KVBC field inspections, for his Living Creations series. The grower was completely surprised by the plant's election as Best Novelty 2023: "The KVBC tests dozens of novelties every year. Getting a gold medal is a great achievement, but hearing that your novelty is the very best of the whole year is a huge honour."

"The multi-year field inspection proves that Living Little Rosy ® grows remarkably compact by nature, i.e. untreated and unsprayed," says Alex Schoemaker. "The compact growth is Living Little Rosy's most important characteristic, combined with its bright white flowers that turn dark pink. Like the other Hydrangeas within the Living Creations series, the plant is easy to care for and hardy to -30°C.”

Living Little Rosy® previously won the Green Retail award and gold in Royal FloraHolland's shelf-life test. By then the paniculata appeared to perform best in terms of flowering time. This is one of the core values within the Living Creations line of good genetics: the promise of 100 days of flowering.

Green cities and water management in focus

Innovations for water management in ornamental horticulture and greening cities in an arid climate are on the agenda for the 2024 AIPH Spring Meeting,..

Innovations for water management in ornamental horticulture and greening cities in an arid climate are on the agenda for the 2024 AIPH Spring Meeting, due to take place 3-7 March in Doha, Qatar. The five-day event is organised by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) with the support of Host Sponsor Expo 2023 Doha Qatar and Headline Sponsor Biblo.

On Monday 4 March 2024, organisers of forthcoming AIPH-approved Expos will share updates on their progress at the International Expo Conference. Delegates will have the chance to explore Expo 2023 Doha in the afternoon on a VIP tour. The A1 World Horticultural Expo is the first of its kind to be hosted in a desert climate. With a theme of ‘Green Desert, Better Environment’, the Expo showcases the latest greening techniques to prove that a green desert is possible.

The AIPH Green City Conference takes place on Tuesday 5 March and will welcome key figures from around the world to offer their insights on the challenge of greening cities in arid climates. Desert cities are found on all continents and share concerns around water availability, urban heat island effects, and energy use. This conference explores the strategies adopted to create liveable and efficient cities, putting the attenuating capacity of plants at the centre of city form and function. Speakers include: H.E Dr Ali Al Jassin, Chairman of the Emirates Green Building Council; Jala Makhzoumi, Vice President of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA); Dr Mario V Balzan, Senior Lecturer at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST), and Founder and Managing Director at Ecostack Innovations; and Huda Shaka, Director of Urban Strategy and Planning, Gehl.

On Wednesday 6 March, the AIPH Horticultural Industry Conference will present innovations in water management for ornamentals production. AIPH members from around the world will report on the water management challenges faced by growers in their countries, how growers are being supported to face these challenges, innovations for sustainable solutions, and what this means for the future of the industry. Following this conference, guests will be taken on a tour of key green city sites within the Doha municipality, including the National Museum of Qatar and Education City.

Finally, the AIPH Spring Meeting will conclude on Thursday 7 March with professional visits to local producers and other key locations in the Doha municipality, followed by a farewell dinner.

Early bird tickets for the AIPH Spring Meeting are available until 13 February 2024 and cost only £380 GBP. For more information and to book your place at this inspiring meeting, visit the AIPH Website.

AIPH thanks Host Sponsor Expo 2023 Doha Qatar, Headline Sponsor Biblo, Expo Conference Partners AGES, Green City Conference Partners Earthna, IFLA, and ISOCARP, and Media Partners FloraCulture International, Guiaverde, and Host City for their support of this event.

The Commercial Horticultural Association’s UK exhibitors at IPM (23 to 26 January, Essen) praise the event’s global status and the quality audience that it attracts.

The CHA group included specialist breeders and growers David Austin Roses, The Guernsey Clematis Nursery/Raymond Evison Clematis and Pinnacle Plants, alongside accessories suppliers Air-Pot®, Plantopia Eco Pulp, PPC Labels and Tyne Moulds & Machinery Co Ltd. Design specialist Garden Centre Design Consultancy - C Long Design Studios also exhibited with the group in Hall 7, with INDO Lighting, supplier of glasshouse and greenhouse systems exhibiting in Hall 3.

Jeremy Watkinson, Managing Director PPC Labels commented: “The show has been good in terms of new customers and existing growers mainly, with some garden centre groups from the UK, Ireland, Italy, Kuwait and Denmark. IPM is the best show in Europe for ornamental horticulture and is the most important show that we do.”

Kate Porter Head of International Partner Network, David Austin Roses was also pleased with their participation: “We have connected with existing contacts and had meaningful conversations with contacts to develop following on from the show. It’s been a great place to showcase the new material we’ve launched. There’s nothing else like it in terms of international reach for our team - it’s the only show which offers the opportunity to draw international visitors.”

Andrew Jeanes International Sales and Marketing Manager of The Guernsey Clematis Nursery/Raymond Evison Clematis complimented the event on its global reach: “The quality of visitors has been very, very good. We’ve had good conversations with existing and new clients. IPM is a very important show, being a global brand and stands alone – we don’t do any other international shows, as this is truly worldwide.”

Anthony Long from Garden Centre Design Consultancy – C Long Design Studios also praised the quality of attendance: “IPM draws a multi-national, not just a European audience. We have done the show for 20 years and it is the most plant focused of meeting places. We bring customers here – we brought four from the USA and seven from the Slavic Baltic states.”

Sustainable British innovations

The UK group demonstrated a range of sustainable solutions to the challenges of climate change:

Plantopia Eco Pulp was showing its brand new sustainable plant tray for Danish trolleys.
The tray is made from recycled material and is compostable as well as absorbent, to keep plants moist while on display.

Developed over 25 years, Air-Pot’s containers actively enhance growth. Toughly constructed from recycled plastic the containers are reusable and last many years.

INDO Lighting launched a brand new lighting system. These plug and play lights for glasshouses and greenhouses are perfect for 1000w HPS replacements, saving substantial amounts of energy for growers of salads, plants and vegetables.

PPC Labels is ‘committed to greener printing', offering polypropylene produced from a high percentage of recycled material, plus water resistant, bio degradable and compostable card "Delipac" for use on tags and packaging. All of its paper comes from FSC certified sources, with a wide range of recycled papers and boards.

Garden Centre Design Consultancy – C Long Design Studios design buildings to mitigate climate change, with one design having a retractable roof which breathes and lives – it opens when the sun shines and closes when it rains, has low running costs through technically innovative lighting which only uses energy when needed and is plant compatible, domestic leisure compatible, delivering a minimum saving of 40% on a garden centres’ running costs.

Tyne Moulds & Machinery Co Ltd uses 90% recycled consumer plastics in the making of all of its products and granulate waste materials to recycle and use again. It also has solar panels on its factory roof, generating over 150 kilowatts of power.

Bells Horticultural, a distinguished family-run enterprise with a rich heritage in horticulture, proudly announces the acquisition of the celebrated Peter Beales Roses business. This strategic move solidifies Bells Horticultural's commitment to preserving and enhancing the tradition of exquisite rose cultivation.

Peter Beales Roses, a name synonymous with timeless elegance and exceptional craftsmanship, has been a beacon in the world of roses since 1968. The acquisition, which completed today (Friday, 2nd February), allows Bells Horticultural to carry forward the legacy of Peter Beales Roses, ensuring the continued availability of one of the finest and most diverse selection of roses in the market. Customers can expect the same unwavering commitment to quality and excellence that both brands are renowned for.

A pillar of the horticultural sector, Bells Horticultural benefits from extensive experience as a commercial nursery grower of indoor, outdoor and perennial plants supplied to many of the UK’s largest multiples and produced in a 30-acre modern glass house production site heated by a 3MW biomass boiler, whilst also running its own garden centre and e-commerce sites. It is this combined experience, passion and knowledge that has led the team to expand its portfolio to include one of the most beloved and iconic rose brands in the industry. The deal, which has been several months in the making, marks an exciting new era for Peter Beales Roses, an established brand and 28-time gold medal winner at RHS Chelsea.

The plan going forward is for the two businesses to operate independently of one another, however, the Bells team recognises that some benefits will be realised through the acquisition. It has also been confirmed that the wholesale supply of branded Peter Beales Roses to garden centres will continue through the existing supply partner, Whartons Roses.

Robert Bell, Managing Director at Bells Horticultural said: “We are thrilled to confirm that we have now finalised the purchase of Peter Beales Roses. This acquisition marks a significant milestone for us but, more importantly, it marks an exciting next chapter for Peter Beales Roses; a brand that has been much loved by rose aficionados across the world for over 50 years. We are committed to preserving the legacy of the brand and its physical entities but also have great aspirations for future growth, including exciting plans to expand the breeding programme, and raise the public profile of the brand.

“From a commercial standpoint, the Peter Beales offering fits perfectly within the space we currently operate in, and we are confident that this will be pay dividends in both the short and long term. From garden centres and e-commerce to growing expertise, the synergies between our two brands are considerable and, we believe, are vital to the longevity of this expanded brand portfolio. We are on the precipice of something extremely exciting and it’s an honour to be carrying on the Peter Beales brand. Our thanks, of course, goes to Kenneth March, Director at Peter Beales Roses Ltd for all of his help and support during the transaction, and to the wider sector for their encouragement as we move forwards into this next phase.”

Bells assures customers of a smooth transition, with business as usual and no disruption to orders as it takes ownership of the Peter Beales business.

To find out how you can be part of the next chapter for Bells Horticultural and Peter Beales Rose, please do not hesitate to reach out the team for more information via info@bells.group

Ames Tools hits garden centres

The AMES Companies merchandising teams are busy installing dedicated product displays in hundreds of garden centres across the country – the first of which is Selby Garden Centre.

Much has been said about the all-new AMES Tools brand since its launch at Glee 2023. With its one-of-a-kind design features, comprehensive range options and a choice of carbon or stainless-steel, this is a tool brand that has been carefully curated for all gardeners and has garnered a positive response from all corners of the garden retail sector.

Now, as the spring season fast approaches, the AMES Companies merchandising teams are busy installing dedicated product displays in hundreds of garden centres across the country; the first of which is Selby Garden Centre. Here, Merchandising Manager, Brian Cobb, tells us more about this exciting milestone for the tool brand.

AMES Tools delivered direct to store

Arriving in convoy, the AMES Companies merchandising team deliver AMES Tools direct to store. Once there, they work closely with the store’s sales managers and garden centre staff to get to know the space and provide the best solution to, not just fit the space, but to also draw attention from across the retail store.

With dedicated teams in place, most stores will see the same merchandisers several times throughout the season. This means relationships can be forged, whilst the team are able to continually familiarise themselves with the space, often anticipating layout and display needs ahead of time and making expert recommendations.

Revamping the tool space

At Selby Garden Centre, on the day of delivery, the space was made ready and the store’s manager, Claire Turton, joined the team to witness the construction of the new tool display from start to finish.

Prior to stock arriving onsite, a dedicated space was earmarked for the AMES Tools display, allowing the team to get to work straight away. The strength of the AMES team lies in its ability to bring a mix of creativity and construction expertise. This means they don’t just build the display unit there in the store, but using their keen eye, add the right stock combinations and perfect the layout for the best possible shopping experience.

From the four display solutions available – modular back wall, hanging display, freestanding island and promotional FDSU – Selby Garden Centre decided upon the back wall option, which can extend between one or two metres. Featuring sleek black fixtures, built-in spotlights and backlit header panel, the AMES branding stands proud amongst it all, allowing it to really ‘speak’ to shoppers.

Why do retailers love AMES Tools?

Whilst watching the installation, Brian was able to grab some time with Selby Garden Centre’s Claire Turton to find out more about her initial thoughts regarding the centre’s newest tool offering.

“I was excited when I first saw the AMES Tools offering, as it offered great pre-season deals, but more than this, I also recognised the difference that it was bringing to market, as well as the quality of the product.

“I am really impressed by the display that has been created. It’s extremely eye-catching and clearly explains the products to customers. I also love the QR code that sends customers from the label to the website to learn more. It’s a fantastic idea that I am sure will increase sales and consumer confidence.”

Standout features and USPs

Claire also mentioned that the AMES Tools range covers everything the garden centre needs to offer customers.  She added: “The carbon range is a great point of difference compared to other ranges currently on the market today.  The quality shines through and there are many different features creating unique selling points.”

Every garden centre needs a greenhouse display site… a Vitavia & Janssens one at that
GTN Xtra Promotion

Vitavia Greenhouses is a family run business based in Suffolk. The company is the British partner of the Vitavia Group, the leading name throughout Europe for quality hobby greenhouses and greenhouse accessories. Vitavia is also the UK distributor for Janssens greenhouses and garden rooms from Belgium...

Let us tell you why!

When your Garden Centre sells everything from seeds, to pots, to soil, to crops why would you miss out on completing the growing journey for your customers?

The benefits of owning a greenhouse…

One of the reasons for owning a greenhouse is that it can open up so many options for how and what you can grow in your garden. Grow outside and your crops are at risk of the elements and climate change but a greenhouse creates a small micro climate of its own that can extend the period of time you are able to grow in a season.

So if a greenhouse extends the growing season to all year round, surely selling greenhouses would extend your Garden Centre’s seasonal purchasing too? It really does sound win/win!

But why Vitavia & Janssens Greenhouses?

Vitavia Greenhouses is a family run business based in Suffolk. They are the British partner of the Vitavia Group, the leading name throughout Europe for quality hobby greenhouses and greenhouse accessories.

They provide home and trade deli veries throughout the UK. They are proud to supply quality hobby greenhouses, widely regarded as being the best value for money, backed up by exceptional customer service.

Vitavia is also the UK distributor for Janssens greenhouses and garden rooms from Belgium.

Janssens market middle and high-end products developed in-house for customers who attach paramount importance to quality and style. Over the years they have earned a reputation for high quality design and innovation.

Janssens are the perfect complement to the already well established Vitavia range.

But greenhouses will take up so much room…

This is the statement we hear a lot, but think about it… you have to sell an awful lot of seeds or pots to get the value of a greenhouse sale and they are a fantastic display space for other garden centre products. We advise having 3 models on display to suit all customers, 6 x 4, 6 x 8 and 8 x 10, so if you can squeeze them in somewhere, they really will become an asset to your Garden Centre.

Get in touch.

So if we’ve whet your appetite and like us you think that adding a greenhouse range to your Garden Centre is an excellent idea, please get in contact via email or phone as we’d love to hear from you.

As Silver supporters of the Greenfingers Charity, Meadow View Stone welcomes the opportunity of collaborating with fellow suppliers to raise funds for this inspirational cause. So, when Kate Ebbens asked the business to sponsor her for running 365 days consecutively to raise funds – how could they refuse!

Meadow View Stone are a leading supplier of premium decorative aggregates, paving and horticultural grits and sands, exclusively to the garden centre sector. Having launched a series of phenomenally successful premium, washed, decorative aggregate blends over the years, the company has revolutionised the hard landscaping category with their collection of exclusive products and innovative point of sale concepts.

At Glee, the company launched their new “Themed” point of sale vinyl’s which correlate products to a common theme, be it a design trend, colour theme or specific project. These inspiring graphics and display gardens give stockists a selection of stunning gardens to inspire customers by relating products to a project which they can then replicate.

Customers are already commenting on the displays, having said “I never thought of using stepping stones to create a pathway, I am definitely going to recreate that in the spring.”

Stockists are equally extremely impressed on the transformation these displays give to their hard landscaping areas and see the potential the new POS offers by inspiring customers to undertake projects, such as smartening up their front door, creating a pathway or a tranquil space to relax and enjoy.

All at Meadow View Stone would like to wish Kate all the best with her endeavours and would urge fellow suppliers and customers to similar sponsor Kate.

What the judges will be looking for when they visit:

As GTN's Greatest Christmas Awards firstly recognise the amazing teamwork involved in garden centre Christmas retailing excellence we asked our judges what specific things they will be looking for in each Christmas Awards category this year:

  • The Greatest Christmas Houseplant Team
    • Christmas theming of the displays, link sales and plants as Christmas presents
  • The Greatest Christmas Tree and Outdoor Plant Team
    • Extending the Christmas experience out into the Planteria, not only making the sale of cut trees fun and different but what is being done to promote link sales to trees as well as plants as presents.
  • The Greatest Christmas BBQ and Outdoor Leisure Team – The Solex Sizzle
    • Effort (and success) being put to inspiring  sales of BBQ’s, firepits, furniture, arbours and leisure items normally associated with summer rather than Christmas
  • The Greatest Christmas Wild Bird Care & Pet Team
    • From a gondola end of Christmas pet treats to a whole department dedicated to wild bird care or pets of all shapes and sizes. The festive feeling generated by the team, from their attitude for sales to their inspirational displays.  Who has been bold enough to include a pet or wild bird care display in the main Christmas area?

  • The Greatest Festive Retail Food Hall Team
    • Food Hall, Farm Shop or just a department in the retail area. Looking for seasonal lines, offers and services to build unit sales as well as dressing of the area. What is special to your Garden Centre offer over other food retailers?
