Who budgeted for this? Garden centre sales in the GTN Bestsellers Epos database over the past five weeks, which compare with the first five weeks after re-opening last year, are 4% up, and plant sales over the same period are 10% up.

In conversations we had with garden centres last year, they said “we’ll never achieve those highs again.”  Instead, we’ve seen new record June sales weeks and with the weather holding the signs are that this could continue through into July.

Last week, All Sales Volumes in the Epos data were 25% up on the same week last year, with growing media sales up by 34%. That is indicative of at least a quarter and up to one third more gardening activity currently taking place. Does that mean more than three million new gardeners in the marketplace or just the new gardeners from last year becoming even more active?

With two weeks to go to the half year we could be looking at a year-to-date position at 15% up on 2019. Dare we think about even more increases in 2022?

Please note our last week, year on year comparisons, below, are now back to 2020.

Hozelock: The natural approach to gardening
GTN Xtra Promotion

Today’s gardeners are reaching less for chemicals and more for organic and natural solutions to create their green garden...

Today’s gardeners are reaching less for chemicals and more for organic and natural solutions to create their green garden.

The trend of natural gardening has risen in the past year, with enthusiastic gardeners of all abilities seeking a connection to nature, after spending an increasing amount of time at home, and a desire to become more self-sufficient. As a result, there has been an increase among gardeners in growing their own produce and creating an environment for wildlife to thrive.

This provides an opportunity for garden centre retailers to maximise sales by expanding their product offering and potentially reaching a new audience.

Gardens can flourish naturally using Hozelock’s Pure range, which is a collection of gardening equipment that helps consumers better connect with their gardens whilst also caring for the environment.

For garden centre retailers looking to offer natural gardening solutions, Hozelock’s Pure Kit is a key product as it enables gardeners to create their own homemade solutions for a number of tasks, such as preventing aphids to removing limescale on a stainless steel surface.

Hozelock’s BioMix or Bokashi Composter are key products in this category and will target those looking to make their own nutrient rich fertiliser or base for first grade compost at home without the pungent smell or mess.

The Bokashi Composter also helps to eliminate food waste and reduce the amount of kitchen waste going to landfill, which is perfect for those looking to live more sustainably.

By harnessing the power of nature, gardeners can make solutions from lavender and ivy grown in their garden with the Hozelock BioMix, which can be used to repel aphids, ants, whitefly and red spiders. Healthy plants grown in this way are naturally more resistant to pests and diseases, reducing the need for chemical pesticide applications.

New garden wellies set to ignite year-round sales

A new name in wellington boots is helping to drive year-round sales, whilst also showcasing new material innovation to mix up the gardener’s favourite footwear category. A new name in wellington boots is helping to drive year-round sales, whilst also showcasing new material innovation to mix up the gardener’s favourite footwear category. Introducing Leon Boots Co Ltd – the name behind the all-new ‘revolutionary’ ULTRALIGHT garden ankle boot, the lightest and most comfortable wellington boot to ever hit the UK market.

Every garden retailer will recognise the value of stocking wellington boots. Whether established gardeners, hobbyists or just for those consumers that want footwear that withstands days spent outside, wellington boots are a long-term proven seller. However, with several established brands largely monopolising the market, consumers are often left with little choice, faced with the same colours and designs. Until now that is.

Leon Boots Co., has been created to shake up the wellington boot category, bringing new colours, designs and unique characteristics to help drive year-round sales and maximising vital gifting potential. To date, the Leon Boots Co. offering has found its home within forty UK garden centres, with further expansion earmarked following the launch of the new garden ankle boot collection.

Drawing on over a decade of expertise within the outdoor footwear sector, Leon Boots Co. has brought to market a material which enables the company to create ULTRALIGHT wellington boots that are up to 65% lighter than traditional boots. Manufactured from award-winning, injection moulded EVA/TRC polymer, a pair of Leon Boots Co. boots can weigh as little as 219g – that’s the same weight as an adult hamster!

Lightweight doesn’t mean a compromise on functionality, however. Leon Boots Co. proudly boast a wide range of features which offer longevity for users including full insulated working against temperatures as low as minus 30°C, split and crack resistant, 100% waterproof, and featuring a removable and washable sock liner. The lightweight ergonomic design also allows for exceptional comfort and support, making the boots suitable for long-term wear and happy feet.

New-for-2021 Garden Ankle Boots

As the name suggests the new garden ankle boot is a shorter length and features an easy to pull on design thanks to the incorporated hand grips, whilst the removable sock liner offers a stylish contrast. Available in traditional green, as well as black, fuchsia, red and yellow, and with an RRP of just £29.99, these are boots designed to drive impulse sales and increase the gifting potential of the footwear category.

In addition to the all-new garden ankle boots, the Leon Boot Co. also offers a longer length Explorer (unisex style available in black and green - RRP £49.95),  Montana (ladies style available in navy and green - RRP £39.95) and the Froggy range for children (available in pink and blue - RRP £22.95).

Merchandising support from Leon Boots Co.

Recognising that footwear can often be a space hungry product range, not to mention the fact that displays can quickly become unruly thanks to customers keen to find their right fit, the team at Leon Boot Co. has launched its products boxed, supported with dedicated displays stands to minimise shelf space required. The display units also enable the stock to be flexibly located around the store, helping to improve cross merchandising potential and ultimately driving up the average basket spend.

Each of the three displays available take up just 0.25m2, and can include 10 pair of kid’s Froggy boots, or six to eight pairs of the new garden ankle boots or unisex styles. These display units can be ordered directly with carriage paid (for 15 mixed styles), making them a quick and easy solution for retailers wanting to increase their footwear offering.

Kevin Burgess, UK Director at Leon Boots Co., said: “We are an exceptionally proud family business that is passionate about bringing to market products that challenge the norm and delight consumers, and we truly believe that our new garden ankle boot will open up new sales opportunities for retailers. The price point – up to 60% cheaper than the leading brands – will make our range much more accessible to shoppers and will open up the gifting potential of this popular footwear style. More than this, retailers can also arm themselves with some great customer communication fodder. It’s not until you touch, feel and wear the boots that you really understand just how light they really are. This is something that retailers can generate conversation about, inviting customers to come try them for themselves. It’s a unique talking point, and one we know works. We’re excited for more garden centres to join in!”

LOFA reports increased freight rates and container crisis

Over the past 19 months LOFA has constantly been reporting on the operational issues faced by its members and the industry as a whole. It had hoped these issues would have lessened and the industry could have gained some respite but, according to the association, it seems these problems are now escalating even further.

LOFA can report there is yet another increase in freight rates being levied at the industry, and the new FAK* rates from Asia to North Europe are now edging towards $20,000 per 40ft container – this represents a massive 1,566% increase in the space of 19 months.

These increased rates will of course have a major impact on importers, retailers and consumers.

Retailers will not be able to sell stock if the retail prices have to be increased due to the jump in these shipping costs.

Importers will find themselves trapped, having to pay 16 times more for freight than last year and it would not be unlikely to expect some companies to flounder in 2022 if this situation is not resolved.

Considering many of LOFA’s members have to bring in 50-plus containers in a season this is a huge amount of extra funding they are having to generate.

Example

2021 - 50 containers @ $20,000 per 40ft Container           $1,000,000

2019 - 50 containers @ $1200 per 40ft Container              $     60,000

Extra funding                                                                       $   940,000

LOFA members have tried to absorb these costs where they can, to assist their customers, but the association says this will no longer be possible with such a massive increase.

LOFA says the whole market is in bedlam and there are many defining factors causing this issue, price increases aside.

  • Finding empty containers is exceedingly difficult.
  • Factories are producing product but are running out of storage space because there are no free containers to load the products on to.
  • There is a new outbreak of Covid which is affecting the southern China Ports where there were reported to be up to 40 vessels waiting to berth last week.
  • The availability of containers at these southern Chinese ports continues to deteriorate as carriers omit calls due to a wave of Covid outbreaks in the Guangzhou province.  According to the latest data from Container xChange, the ports of Yantian, Shekou and Nansha have been the worst hit by the container shortages.
  • There are far fewer empty containers arriving back to southern China as container lines skip calls, and many shippers face long delays or higher prices for equipment if these affected ports can’t be avoided.
  • At the moment there are 5 million containers currently in the wrong position in the world and 40% less vessels for June as a result of the Suez Canal issues.
  • When products eventually arrive in the UK there is now an issue with moving goods that have docked and cleared from the quay as inland haulage rates have reached new and unexpected heights.

Is it the shipping lines that have colluded together and seized this opportunity to increase prices whilst the demand is strong and are now reaping the benefits for no other reason than they can?  Distributors, retailers and consumers are now all paying excessively for this short-term profit gain, in real terms has Brexit, Covid and the high demand helped them to get away with their greed, and are they in effect operating as a cartel? Is there too much control in the hands of the shipping lines?

In light of these ongoing difficulties LOFA have lobbied the Department of International Trade, the Home Office, local government and have also reported this price fixing by the larger freight firms to the Competition and Markets Authority, this report is now with the CMA legal team who are deliberating on a decision. LOFA are hoping this will lead to a full investigation.

*FAK is an acronym used in the shipping industry that stands for Freight All Kinds. According to globalnegotiator.com, they are rates applicable to all types of goods and not restricted to any particular commodity.

Choice Marketing 081019_GTN072.jpg

Choice Marketing is hosting its own ‘Meet the Furniture Buyer’ event next week in Northamptonshire, where a number of its associate suppliers will be exhibiting.

Michelle de Lavis-Trafford, CEO of Choice Marketing, said “In the absence of trade shows right now, which are an absolute necessity, we decided to create our own event for Choice members, saving enormous time travelling around the country to visit supplier showrooms.  In an informal and relaxed, covid-safe, atmosphere, Choice members will be able to browse new collections for 2022, chat to suppliers and to place orders for the 2022 season.  Long over-due member networking is also essential.”

Due to covid restrictions, space was limited and was sold out within a day.  Good membership attendance is also expected. Tim Armstrong of Highfield Garden Centre said he was looking forward to the event, which will be of huge benefit to their business and is one of the great benefits to being a member of the group.

Steve Potter of suppliers Glencrest said: “We too are looking forward to next week’s event.  To be able to see so many customers under one-roof is an enormous benefit and we look forward to continuing the growth of our business with Choice members”.

De Lavis-Trafford added “Choice has run these type of events for a few years now, and they have always been a great opportunity to put members and suppliers in touch in a relaxed and friendly environment and strengthens supplier relations”.

Garden centres who would like to know more about the benefits of membership of Choice Marketing, or are interested in meeting up at our event next week, should contact Michelle de Lavis-Trafford here.

The HTA June Market update indicates changes in consumer behaviour as lockdown measures ease

The Horticultural Trades Association’s Market Update report for June shows that nationally garden centre sales were up 30% in May from May 2020 and up 23% from May 2019...

The Horticultural Trades Association’s Market Update report for June shows that nationally garden centre sales were up 30% in May from May 2020 and up 23% from May 2019.

Despite it being the wettest May since 1967, outdoor container sales were up 54% and garden/gardening sales were up 28% compared to the same month in 2019.

Consumer confidence has bounced back to pre-pandemic levels and many HTA members feel optimistic, with 77% indicating that they expect sales volumes to increase over the next 12 months and 46% expect to increase the number of staff employed.

Average Transaction Values in the garden store were up 34% vs May 2019, and whilst catering sales and footfall are down overall, average transaction values 54% higher than May 2019 indicate customers are spending more when they do visit the café/restaurant.

Since the government roadmap saw further easing of restrictions in the latter half of May, however, garden centres saw a decrease in sales. This could be indicative that the exceptional demand the industry has been experiencing is beginning to tail off.

As the vaccine rollout continues to progress, COVID remains the top issue occupying consumers concern, though concerns for the environment, pollution and climate change have shown significant increase. The HTA is working with member businesses to navigate these issues.

The report is available for HTA members to download now: https://bit.ly/2Tc8ucO

DJ Turfcare’s MO Bacter tackles moss and banishes scarifying

While some lawncare products have evolved beyond recognition in recent years, gardeners are still being advised to kill moss with sulphate of iron, the active ingredient in lawn sand, before removing dead moss by scarifying or hand raking. But DJ Turfcare's Mo Bacter offers an easier alternative...

While some lawncare products have evolved beyond recognition in recent years, gardeners are still being advised to kill moss with sulphate of iron, the active ingredient in lawn sand, before removing dead moss by scarifying or hand raking.

In an era when consumers are demanding easy and chemical-free gardening solutions, the process is not necessary.

Sulphate of iron turns moss black, which can make lawns look unsightly, and can also damage border plants and stain patios and garden furniture if not handled with care.

MO Bacter organic lawn fertiliser from Vivano, distributed in the UK by DJ Turfcare, is a slow-release feed that digests moss without the need to scarify a lawn. Endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society, it can be applied between March and October.

Its formulation offers five key benefits for the home gardener:

  • It leaves no mess or staining
  • Moss doesn’t need to be raked
  • It’s safe for use in gardens where children and pets are present.
  • Active bacteria transform dead moss into feed
  • A slow-release fertiliser keeps the lawn nourished for up to 100 days.

DJ Turfcare’s David Jenkins says: “MO Bacter contains special bacteria found naturally in the soil which digests unsightly moss and turns it into healthy plant food. This eliminates the need to rake dead moss from lawns – a labour-intensive chore that many gardeners despise, whilst also removing the need for gardeners needing to dispose of a large amount of debris.  And for added peace of mind, MO Bacter will not stain surfaces or furniture in the garden.”

David says there is a disparity between what consumers are told and the type of product innovation currently offered. “Traditional expert advice has been to apply a high-nitrogen fertiliser in spring which makes lawns grow rapidly. While this creates a good show in the short term, it leads to more mowing. Because the lawn’s energy is focused on leaf production, it weakens the root. However, MO Bacter is a balanced fertiliser which feeds the roots first, leading to a healthy grass plant that has the strength to compete with further invasions of moss. The long-term result is a healthy lawn.”

With MO Bacter a proven seller, it presents an ideal opportunity for retailers to expand their lawncare offering, to cater for consumers who are increasingly demanding effective chemical-free solutions. It’s a stand-out product that offers garden centres the potential to drive sales growth in the lawncare category, while demonstrating a trustworthy alternative to traditional chemical-based lawn feed and moss control products.

MO Bacter is part of the Viano family of premium quality organic fertilisers that improve soil structure by increasing organic matter and stimulating soil organisms. Unlike chemical-based products, organic fertilisers don’t dissolve quickly but are broken down by micro-organisms in the soil, resulting in better plant growth and development with no leaching. Crucially, Viano organic feeds won’t burn the grass plants if not watered in.

Horticultural Trades Association predicts tree shortage issues for government targets

HTA Board member Brian Fraser appeared before the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) select committee on Tuesday to give evidence to the panel, outlining the industry view that the Government's failure to engage with the sector before setting targets for tree planting will mean that they will most likely miss these targets as growers cannot meet demand in the time frame outlined...

HTA Board member Brian Fraser appeared before the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) select committee on Tuesday to give evidence to the panel, outlining the industry view that the Government's failure to engage with the sector before setting targets for tree planting will mean that they will most likely miss these targets as growers cannot meet demand in the time frame outlined.

Fraser, who is also a member of the HTA’s Tree and Hedging Group and Director of Oakover Nursery in Ashford, Kent, explained that there are not enough trees in production at present to enable the target of 30,000ha to be planted by 2024 to be met.

Brian Fraser said: “The Government needs to urgently work and engage fully with the industry to bring the Nursery Notification Scheme to reality and provide the confidence in the market that growers need. This is through ensuring that landowners have sufficient incentives to plant trees on enough land to meet the targets. The timeframe of only two growing seasons to meet this target is just not achievable without support. It is not just a ‘numbers game’ though. It needs to be a plan that recognises the importance of urban planting and maintenance of those trees if the Government are going to properly back UK tree producers."

James Clark, HTA Director of Policy and Communications at the HTA said: “We all know how crucial tree planting is to tackling climate change and achieving Net Zero. This is a plan that needs to be embedded across Government – ensuring any targets announced are realistic and achievable. Policy decisions around skills and labour, including seasonal workers, along with planning and trade with the EU, are so important not only to delivering a leading tree planting agenda, but for the wider ornamental horticulture sector to generate increased economic growth to ‘build back greener’.”

Tri-Star Packaging introduces new food labelling ahead of Natasha's Law

Tri-Star Packaging has introduced new food labelling to help businesses to comply with Natasha's Law, due to come in this October...

Gen-Label is the new name for Tri-Star Packaging’s Tri-Label division, rebranded at an important time for the foodservice industry, and representing the next generation of food labelling.

“There has never been a more critical time for labelling in the foodservice industry,” says head of Gen-Label, Alan Bryson. “Through the pandemic as businesses swapped to takeaway and delivery models, we were able to help with advice based on over 30 years of foodservice labelling experience. As the industry gears up for the full implementation of Natasha’s Law in October, labelling is crucial – and since the announcement of the new legislation, we have been urging the industry to act immediately.

“While correct allergen identification and labelling is an important health issue, it is also one of corporate responsibility,” adds Alan Bryson. “Lives are literally at stake, so why leave risks in place? As an industry, we can act right away, and improve our reputation if we take action today rather than waiting until October.

“Gen-Label can help businesses to fully comply with Natasha’s Law through its easy-to-use Gen-Label Online software solution.”

Gen-Label makes food labelling simple

As a complete one-stop-solution for all food labelling requirements, Gen-Label can supply everything from eye-catching labels designed to comply with all the latest allergen legislation through to food safety compliant labels for use in kitchens. A wide range of stock self-print or pre-print off-the-shelf options are available, and Gen-Label can also produce bespoke labels, supported by a full in-house design service.

“Gen-Label makes food labelling simple, and our specialists have supplied innovative labelling solutions at every level – from large PLCs to the smallest independent operators – all with the same successful result, an increase in sales and a rise in profit for our clients’ pre-packed food offer,” says Alan Bryson. “Our Gen-Label Design service is available to all label customers, and we work with new and established brands to create label artwork that is both appealing and functional.”

Allergen labelling – Natasha’s Law

It is estimated that almost 1 in 5 people in the UK suffer from an allergy, and while consumers may be allergic or have intolerance to any number of ingredients, only 14 allergens are required to be declared as allergens by UK food law.

Natasha’s Law is so called due to successful campaigning by the family of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse who died, aged 15, in July 2016, after suffering a fatal allergic reaction from eating a baguette purchased in Heathrow Airport. Natasha had a sesame allergy and wasn’t aware that sesame seeds had been pre-baked into the product’s bread.

Natasha’s family passionately campaigned for increased transparency around UK food labelling requirements, and the resulting law will ensure that essential information is always available to help people with a food allergy or intolerance make safe food choices. From October 2021, food pre-packed for direct sale (PPDS) will need to have a label with a full list of ingredients with allergenic ingredients emphasised within it.

Gen-Label makes complying with Natasha’s Law simple and straightforward. The Gen-Label Online software solution allows caterers to build and maintain lists of ingredients including specific allergens and then simply print them off onto pre-formatted blank labels using a standard PC and laser-jet printer.

Accessed via a secure web portal, Gen-Label Online is quick and simple to use. It manages all of your labelling requirements from product descriptions, ingredients and bar codes to allergen and nutritional information, including the government’s front of pack traffic light system. Instantly updateable, Gen-Label Online enables caterers to amend labels and comply with changes in food labelling legislation with ease.

“Natasha’s family also set-up the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation,” Alan Bryson concludes. “The Foundation’s aim is to prevent and end allergic disease and also to bring about positive change by focusing on law and policies, medical research and educating and raising allergy awareness. Gen-Label, through its parent company Tri-Star Packaging are proud to have chosen to support Natasha's Foundation, and we are donating a percentage of all sales of allergen labels to the Foundation. Look out for the Natasha’s Foundation logo on our products.”

Perrywood charity partnership wins fundraising award

Tiptree-based Perrywood Garden Centre’s two-year partnership with Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity has been rewarded with a prestigious honour at the Institute of Fundraising East Anglia Awards. Together, they won Corporate Partnership of the Year...

Tiptree-based Perrywood Garden Centre’s two-year partnership with Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity has been rewarded with a prestigious honour at the Institute of Fundraising East Anglia Awards. Together, they won Corporate Partnership of the Year.

The partnership has helped the chariy to implement its mission to improve the hospital environment and fund enhancements for staff and patients that go beyond the usual NHS budget.

Perrywood’s communications manager, Debbie Wrigley, said it had been a pleasure working with the charity to improve and transform spaces for staff and patients. “Perrywood was delighted to be involved with a local charity whose work supporting healthcare services makes such a difference to so many of our customers. We are proud to have played our part in this very unifying and satisfying partnership.”

Specifically supporting Colchester Hospital, Perrywood donated hundreds of houseplants, lonely patients received gifts at Christmas and the business became members of the charity’s 2019 business club, raising money for the Collingwood Cancer Centre. Cardiac patients benefitted from heart monitors, they bought dementia boxes to stimulate and occupy mentally-frail older patients and the Children’s Department were delighted with their garden make-over and new play equipment. They also donated more than 150 fans for wards and departments to use (in line with a risk assessment for safe use during the pandemic) in the hot weather.

Corporate and trust fundraising manager Penny Norris said: “The degree of involvement at all levels by everyone at Perrywood was so impressive. They did parachute jumps, took part in many challenges, held raffles and quizzes and sold plants.

“The Coffee Shop & Restaurant staff even donated their tips to us – something that continues today despite no longer being official partners. Talk about team spirit!

“This award is thoroughly deserved and couldn’t have gone to more passionate and caring people. They certainly fulfilled one of their missions too which is to give our local community a reason to smile.”

Whilst the impact of Covid-19 affected Perrywood’s ability to fundraise during periods of lockdown, they still raised an astounding £21,126.20 over two.

Dobbies relaunches ‘Helping Your Community Grow’ initiative to support local communities across the UK

Dobbies has relaunched its landmark community support initiative, Helping Your Community Grow...

Dobbies has relaunched its landmark community support initiative, Helping Your Community Grow.

Originally introduced by Dobbies in 2010, and relaunched with a brand-new look and format for 2021, Helping Your Community Grow is a nationwide project that aims to make local landscapes greener, so that communities can enjoy everything the great outdoors has to offer. The initiative will see Dobbies offering products, equipment and support to deserving projects and outdoor spaces in need of a refresh, helping to revitalise the local areas surrounding Dobbies’ nationwide network of stores.

Dobbies aims to deliver at least one project for each of its 69 mainline stores across the UK, with each project receiving product and equipment, plus advice and support from the Dobbies’ team. There will also be opportunities for communities to access small grants from their nearest Dobbies store throughout 2021, for requests that will brighten up the local area, such as bulbs for a colourful flowerbed, or even a communal Christmas tree to bring a sparkle to the festive season. As well as this, the small-format little dobbies stores will also be able to allocate funds to smaller projects.

Whether it’s a civic space, school vegetable patch or even a memorial garden, communities across the UK are invited to apply for support from Helping Your Community Grow now via dobbies.com. All submissions will then be sent to their local Dobbies store, to be reviewed and shortlisted by the team who understand the needs of their neighbourhood. A shortlist of three for every store will be open to a public vote, with local communities having the opportunity to vote for a project that is important to them. There will be one overall winning project per store, plus a national winner who will receive further support.

Graeme Jenkins, CEO of Dobbies, said: “At Dobbies, we are passionate about helping the communities around our stores to thrive. Helping Your Community Grow is a fantastic initiative that will allow our stores and experts to provide advice, equipment, products and support to projects that directly benefit their local area.

“We are looking forward to seeing the applications come in and finding out more about the exciting projects going on across the UK. We want to help make our local landscape a little bit greener, benefit people living in the local area and help boost wellbeing with green spaces and gardening projects.”

The criteria for shortlisted projects couldn’t be simpler; eligible projects must benefit a wide group of people in the local community, must be located within 20 miles of a Dobbies store, and must be able to be completed by February 2022.

Applications for Helping Your Community Grow are now open.

Check out the entries for the HTA's 2021 Virtual New Plant Awards

You can check out all 93 entries in the HTA's Virtual New Plant Awards 2021 in a PDF issued by the association last week. The winners were announced last Tuesday.

Ahead of Tuesday’s announcement webinar of the winners of the Virtual New Plant Awards 2021, the HTA has released the full list of this year's entries.

On this PDF you can see all 93 entries, including picture of the plants and their growers/ breeders. Entries were received in five categories – Herbaceous Perennials; Annuals; Houseplants; Shrubs & Climbers and Trees & Conifers. All entries have been verified for their ‘newness’ by Joy of Plants.

HTA horticulture manager Pippa Greenwood, said: “It has been an ever-changing 12 months, with more than a few difficult times, but it has been great to witness so much increased interest in gardening and the ‘recruitment’ of around three million new gardeners. It only seems fitting therefore, that we have had such a great response to the 2021 Virtual New Plant Awards.

“In ‘normal’ years all plants entered into the New Plant Awards at the HTA National Plant Show would have been viewed by the show visitors, some of whom would ultimately buy the plants for their retail outlets and help us to spread enthusiasm for these new plants.  Sadly, with the pandemic still very much with us, the HTA National Plant Show 2021 as a live event had to be cancelled.

Last year’s virtual version of The New Plant Awards was such a success that we have gone virtual for 2021 too as we are determined to make sure that all the wonderful new plants that have been produced get the publicity and acclaim that they deserve. There were so many tremendous (and very tempting!) plants and it was a real pleasure to see so many entries and some superb winners.”

The 2021 Judging Panel, Co-chaired by Martin Simmons, HTA director of membership and Pippa Greenwood, included Laura Jackson (Swarkestone Nursery), Andy (Klondyke Group), Chris Young (RHS Editor at Large) and Jane Moore (Garden Media Guild).

Farms in England which employ workers for horticultural production saw on average a 10% shortfall in seasonal labour in the first quarter of 2021, according to Defra’s new quarterly online Labour in Horticulture Survey.

The report said about about 30% of survey respondents needed seasonal labour.

The survey, launched in 2018 but not used in 2020 because of the covid-19 pandemic, is still in its development stage but aims to build an accurate long-term picture of labour needs in horticulture.

In the first quarter of 2021,out of the 423 farms with horticulture who responded, 297 had no need for seasonal labour (70%). Of the 126 survey respondents who did need labour, 29% reported a shortfall.

B&Q aims for peat-free growing media range by 2023

B&Q says it aims to stop selling bagged peat-based growing media in 2023 to support efforts to tackle climate change.

The company first introduced peat-free compost in 1991 and stopped selling 100% peat in 2008. A range of peat-free bedding plants was introduced in 2014. “Throughout, we’ve been working with suppliers to improve the quality of peat-free composts and to secure sufficient volumes to achieve our peat-free commitment, whilst fulfilling our customers’ needs to enjoy their gardens,” the company said in a statement.

Over the last three years, B&Q has worked with suppliers to develop a peat-free formulation based on coir and other ingredients under the GoodHome brand, which was launched last year. GoodHome is offered alongside New Horizon and Pro-Grow branded composts, amongst others. All B&Q’s bagged composts have their peat content declared on the packaging.

In 2018 B&Q became the first retailer to remove neonicotinoids from its supply chain, and it has since stopped selling products containing metaldehyde and glyphosate.

Join us on plant health mission urges Wyevale Nurseries

Wyevale Nurseries MD Andy Johnson has called on growers across the country to join a campaign highlighting the importance of plant health and biosecurity...

Wyevale Nurseries has called on growers across the country to join a campaign highlighting the importance of plant health and biosecurity.

It says everyone in the horticultural industry should be aware of the Plant Health Alliance’s Plant Healthy Certification scheme and is urging other wholesalers to participate too. The nursery is contacting all customers this month to raise awareness.

“Along with sustainability, biosecurity is one of the most important things going on in our industry at the moment and we want all our customers to be fully aware of what the initiative means for them,” said MD Andy Johnson. “We also urge more commercial nurseries across the country to join us and to get audited.

“We will be using the Plant Healthy logo going forward so our customers can be clear they are receiving only the best quality plants and that this is something that the nation’s ever-growing number of gardeners will want to know about too.

“This Defra-endorsed scheme is good for us all, as it helps reduce the risk of introducing and spreading destructive plant pests via our trade plant supply chains. Plus, it also protects our horticulture industry, other cultivated plants and natural habitats as well. We’re urging everyone in the supply chain to get involved and to get independently audited.”

The certification scheme makes it easier for retailers and landscapers to identify suppliers that trade and grow using the highest standards of health and biosecurity.

“We’ve always grown our plants using the highest voluntary standards,” Johnson said. “Now we’ve been officially recognised through the scheme for our level of professional commitment in this area, which has been described as ‘reassuring’ and ‘impressive’ by the Plant Health Alliance.

“We successfully passed its independent Plant Healthy audit, conducted by the scheme’s certification body, Grown in Britain, and were recently presented with our Plant Healthy Certification. But now we feel it’s important more British wholesalers join in and that those buying our plants are fully informed too.”

Wyevale Nurseries was among growers involved in the pioneering phase of the scheme, which was overseen by the Alliance Steering Group consisting of 19 UK-based organisations representing government, trade and the third sector.

Members include representatives from arboriculture, forestry, ornamental horticulture, landscaping and farming organisations such as Defra, the RHS, HTA, Woodlands Trust, NFU and BALI.

“We’ve been pioneering on these issues for many years now. We’re now even more committed to proactive plant biosecurity, promoting the importance of protecting the health of our plant life from plant pests and diseases, helping safeguard the biodiversity of the British landscape and supporting the horticultural UK economy.

“Buying from us means our customers are guaranteed plants grown using only the highest standards of health and biosecurity and we’re protecting the environment too. It’s an important thing to do and an essential part of the world we live in today. If we all join in with this, as an industry, it can only be good for everyone.”

RHS Summer Shows to go ahead as planned following latest government announcement with additional covid measures in place

Whilst the Government announcement on 14 June 2021, means some coronavirus rules will continue for the next five weeks, RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival (5-11 July) and RHS Flower Show Tatton Park (21 – 25 July) will be able to go ahead as planned with additional safety measures in place...

Whilst the Government announcement on 14 June 2021, means some coronavirus rules will continue for the next five weeks, RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival (5-11 July) and RHS Flower Show Tatton Park (21 – 25 July) will be able to go ahead as planned with additional safety measures in place.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is working closely with Public Health England and awaiting confirmation on the numbers allowed on site at RHS Hampton Court but is confident that the popular festival will be able to run near to usual capacity.

In addition and in line with the latest Public Health England guidance and following the success of the Pilot Test Events, all visitors will be required to take a lateral flow test before travelling to the Shows and have recent evidence to prove a negative result before being admitted to the event. Lateral flow tests are available for free and can be taken at home or at a local test site. Full information can be found at: www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing/. Proof of a negative test can be provided as a printed document or as an email or text message. Visitors must provide proof of a negative test even if you have been vaccinated. Children aged under 11 do not need to take a test.

Tests need to be taken the day before or the morning before they travel to the event. Anyone who tests positive should not travel and should follow Government advice. Ticket holders who test positive will be offered  an exchange to the 2022 show, a credit or a full refund in line with RHS terms and conditions.

There will be a number of additional measures in place to ensure our visitors, members, staff and exhibitors feel safe at our summer shows. These include extra parking and park-and-ride options for those travelling by car, socially distanced queuing, enhanced cleaning and waste disposal, hand sanitisers stationed across the showground, contactless transactions and regular exhibitor testing.

The RHS would like to thank everyone for their continued support, understanding and cooperation as we implement changes in order to ensure our shows can return safely this summer.

Speaking about the day, GIMA Director, Vicky Nuttall said: “What a fantastic day. The first in-person event since March 2019 certainly delivered. It was great to see the industry come together for a day of fun and networking and we are so grateful to everyone for joining us safely and securely. It was clear that such events had been missed, so it was wonderful to be able to facilitate this. A huge thank you must go to everyone that took part including our sponsors, those that donated auction and raffle prizes, and all those that dug deep and donated to the Greenfingers charity.”

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at the Greenfingers Charity said: “On behalf of everyone at Greenfingers Charity, thank you GIMA for another fabulous charity event. Your generosity throughout the day and into the evening is hugely appreciated by us all but more importantly the hundreds of children and families we support.”

Planning permission has now been granted, so Perrywood can now move ahead with their £8-10m investment in an inspirational new Garden Centre at their existing site in Newton Road, Sudbury. Existing buildings will be repurposed with the potential to be leased out to other rural businesses and organisations.

Perrywood worked with Paul Pleydell and the team at Pleydell Smithyman to prepare and submit the application. It received overwhelming support from the local community because it will attract visitors to the area and create new jobs.

Simon Bourne, Retail Director, told us: "This is fantastic news for our business, our team and the community. We are growing the Perrywood family as we move closer to opening day. This week, we have announced we are searching for a plant area manager and a health and safety manager. We also have vacancies for a grounds person and chef, and it's an exciting time to join our expanding team."

The build is expected to take at least two years. During that time, Perrywood is inviting local businesses interested in becoming tenants on the site. They must align with Perrywood's vision and values and complement the garden centre.

Simon adds, "We'd like to work with like-minded businesses over the next five years to develop the wider site into an exciting retail destination. If your business would complement our business, please email info@perrywood.co.uk with the subject heading 'Sudbury' and ask for an expression of interest form."

Tristan Bourne, Operations Director and lead on the new build project, commented: "In the two and a half years since we took over the business, we have significantly grown the turnover. In fact, we expect to triple it by the end of our third year of trading. This gives us great confidence in the new garden centre, and we are keen to get going with the aim of opening in 2023. With planning permission secured, we can now proceed with a whole host of projects, including confirming a building contractor and working on enabling works and infrastructure."

Perrywood's mission is to offer a memorable garden centre experience, deliver wow customer service, and give employees, customers, and the community a reason to smile. The current garden centre building isn't the high standard customers, and the team would expect, so they are planning to invest in this site and build a stunning new garden centre surrounded by plants and trees, that will grow with our business.

In line with their vision and values, the brand new centre at Perrywood Sudbury will:

  • Be a modern purpose-built garden centre, where Perrywood can look after their customers and inspire more people to bring plants into their lives.
  • Improve the site to be the best that it can be with a fabulous range of facilities including a new restaurant.
  • Create a space where their team enjoy coming to work, with new job opportunities for local people.
  • Put Perrywood Sudbury at the heart of the local community with event spaces, wildlife areas, and leisure opportunities for local people.
  • Teach visitors about and protect the sites flora, fauna and wildlife.

The overall site is larger than at Perrywood Tiptree, but the garden centre plans are similar to Tiptree's. As a family-run business, they are looking forward to growing Perrywood Sudbury to create a special place among the plants that customers, the team and local people will enjoy.

UK-first for Dobbies as garden centre chain launches own brand peat-free compost with added John Innes

Dobbies claims to be the first UK garden centre business to launch an own-brand, peat-free compost with added John Innes.

Dobbies claims to be the first UK garden centre business to launch an own-brand, peat-free compost with added John Innes.

The company pledged in 2020 that it aimed to be 90% peat free during 2021 and 100% during 2022 in relation to bagged compost. The new peat-free compost went on sale in all Dobbies stores from today (Monday 14 June).

Last month, the UK Government launched the England Peat Action Plan supported by an expected over £50 million between 2021 and 2025. The Scottish Government also has a £22 million fund to undertake peatland restoration projects.

Ahead of the launch of the new product, a survey commissioned by Dobbies from Censuswide found significant consumer demand for more environmentally-friendly products, driven in part by the covid pandemic.

  • Just over 3 in 5 (61%) respondents said using peat-free compost is important* to them, with over a fifth (23%) saying very important.
  • A quarter (25%) of respondents said their primary reason for buying eco-friendly, sustainable gardening products is environmental concerns.
  • Over half (55%) of respondents do* buy their own eco-friendly, sustainable gardening products, with just over 1 in 7 (15%) saying they do so regularly.
  • Nearly half (47%) of half respondents agree* with the statement ‘I have made significant changes to my lifestyle to lessen my environmental impact’.
  • Nearly half (47%) of respondents agree* with the statement ‘I make a conscious effort / go out of my way to buy products which are environmentally friendly’.

Marcus Eyles, Horticultural Director at Dobbies, said: “Even before the pandemic it was clear that businesses needed to be providing more environmentally-friendly options for customers. The research we’ve carried out underlines that point with people taking a fresh look at what’s important to them. We started on our own peat-free journey in 2018 and the launch of our own brand, peat-free compost with added John Innes is another important milestone. We have further products launching soon.”

The compost is ideal for all plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables and is perfect for use in pots, containers and baskets. It works well for sowing larger seeds, taking cuttings, young plants and established plants. One notable feature is that the wood fibres and bark give the compost a different look but it grows just as well as other products. It is not suitable for ericaceous plants.

Dobbies’ own-brand peat-free products, including this new item with added John Innes, are priced competitively when compared to the products containing peat, so that there is no financial disincentive for consumers.

Fines of up to £5,000 for animal offences proposed under new Penalty Notices Bill

Individuals who commit offences against animals will face fines of up to £5,000 under new legislation introduced to Parliament on Wednesday. The fines will be introduced to ensure that offenders face tougher penalties for crimes in addition to the existing maximum 5 year prison sentence for the most serious offences.

Individuals who commit offences against animals will face fines of up to £5,000 under new legislation introduced to Parliament on Wednesday.

The fines will be introduced to ensure that offenders face tougher penalties for crimes in addition to the existing maximum 5 year prison sentence for the most serious offences.

The Animals (Penalty Notices) Bill, a Private Members’ Bill introduced by Andrew Rosindell MP and which is backed by the Government, will create a system of a financial penalties of up to £5,000 for animal health and welfare offences. The penalties, which could include on-the-spot fines, can be issued to individuals who have cruelly mistreated pets, zoo animals and livestock.

These new penalties will provide the authorities with an additional enforcement measure to be used alongside warnings and criminal prosecution. These penalties will introduce a more consistent and targeted approach to protecting all animals from harm. The UK has a long history of tackling animal cruelty. The new fines will act as a key deterrent to would be animal abusers in addition to the new five year maximum prison sentence for animal cruelty, which was introduced by the Government through the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill earlier this year.

Introducing the Bill, Andrew Rosindell, MP for Romford said:  "In my 20 years as an M.P. I have consistently fought for animal welfare. Society should rightly be judged by how it treats the animals in its care but for many years, E.U. regulations limited the improvements that could be made.

“Now that we have left the E.U. we have an unrivalled opportunity to make the changes that are so desperately needed. That means stronger sentences for the worst animal abusers under Chris Loder's historic legislation.

“It also means ensuring there are no gaps in legislation that animal abusers can exploit, by committing offences too severe for a warning, but not severe enough for prosecution. My Bill will close that gap, creating fines of up to £5,000 while always being clear that criminal prosecution will always be used for the most serious offences."

Animal Welfare Minister Lord Goldsmith said:  “Animal cruelty has no place in our society and this Government is committed to ensuring those who abuse animals are subject to the full force of the law.

“These new fines will build on our actions to improve our already world-leading animal welfare standards, including raising the maximum prison sentence for animal cruelty to five years.

“I want to commend Andrew Rosindell MP for introducing this important Bill and I look forward to working with him as it progresses through Parliament.”

Chris Sherwood, Chief Executive of the RSPCA, said: “Fixed penalty notices are really useful to quickly combat suffering of farmed animals, horses and animals kept in zoos.

“We are pleased that enforcement bodies will be given powers and revenue from these fines in order to safeguard animal welfare should this bill become law.

“We hope these enforcement notices will serve as a good deterrent to those causing suffering to animals and also an important education tool to prevent them repeating their mistakes in the future.

“These penalties, used in conjunction with tougher sentences which are coming into force soon, will provide better safeguards for all animals.

“We wholeheartedly support Andrew Rosindell’s Bill, are pleased to see it has Government backing and hope it progresses through parliament quickly.”

The Bill will complement plans to introduce greater protections for animals as outlined the Government’s Action Plan for Animal Welfare, which builds on our existing world leading standards by committing to a range of new game changing welfare measures to protect pets, livestock and wild animals.
