Dobbies relaunches third store as part of national refurbishment programme

Dobbies Garden Centre in Hungerford has celebrated a relaunch, as part of the garden centre’s nationwide store refurbishment programme. This is the third in the group's extensive programme of investment across its store estate.

Dobbies Hungerford now features a new collection of plants and gardening products, following close collaboration with both new and existing suppliers to enhance the store’s ranges. This includes new ranges of compost and a bespoke aggregates shop, and the store has also added a small gift shop area stocking home, gift and spa products. In addition, a new fashion offering has been introduced featuring Klass Clothing and Regatta.

The store’s refurbishment includes an expanded coffee shop, now with 88 covers and serving new hot options including toasties and baked potatoes, plus a refreshed front of store area and entrance.

General Manager, Mike Scott, said: “We’re really proud of our refurbished store and can’t wait for customers to see the work that’s been done. Gardening is really popular in Hungerford, so we’ve made the changes with our local garden fans in mind. The refurbishment has been a brilliant team effort from colleagues and partners.”

The Hungerford refurbishment follows Brighton which relaunched at the end of April and Cadnam in May.

With a strong commitment to offering the best possible customer experience, the focus of the refurbishment plans is around improving the overall fabric of the stores, freeing up space for larger and new ranges and generally improving the ease of shopping.

David Robinson, CEO of Dobbies, said: “Our refurbishment programme is well underway and it’s great to see our third store now complete. The Hungerford store has really moved on and we’re looking forward to seeing the response from new and loyal customers.

“Initial feedback from our Brighton and Cadnam stores has been really positive with customers enjoying the localised approach we are taking for each store. Our fourth refurbishment is now underway, and we look forward to sharing more news on this soon.”

Inverness-based Simpsons has acquired Christies Garden Centre in Fochabers, Moray. The new acquisition establishes a group of Simpsons centres across the North-East corridor from Inverness to Aberdeenshire. The site will become the third centre in the Simpsons portfolio following the acquisition of Happy Plant in Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire, in 2020.

Christies' 48 employees will transfer to Simpsons.

Plans include updates to the centre's layout, enhanced offerings and ranges, along with a refreshed restaurant offering. Overall creating a warm, welcoming space designed to continue making the customer experience a memorable one.

The acquisition is a hugely positive move and is testament to the strength of the gardening industry at this time.

Andrew Simpson, managing director of Simpsons Garden Centre, spoke of the acquisition of Christies.

He said: "This is an exciting time for Simpsons as we welcome this fabulous site into our family, not only strengthening the Simpsons brand but continuing to integrate with the local community and driving the centre's growth.

“Christies is a long-established business that has been part of the Fochabers and Moray community since 1820. We are excited at the prospect of continuing the Christies work and building on their achievements.

“We plan to thoughtfully refresh the garden centre over time and intend to expand the range of plants, garden and furniture products on offer, with continued emphasis on quality that keen gardeners expect.

“The restaurant, which is a focal meeting point for the local community, will continue to serve delicious quality food, and we aim to refresh the menu offering, continuing with the focus on quality local ingredients over the coming months.

“We look forward to welcoming the current Christies team to the Simpsons fold, and I wish Christine the very best on her retirement.

Christine Christie, Director and General Manager at Christies Garden Centre, added:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time caring for the Garden Centre and working with excellent staff over the years. Since opening the restaurant in 2006, we have built long-standing relationships with our regular customers, and I will certainly miss the banter. All of our visitors to the Garden Centre and Restaurant have made this job worthwhile.

“Since the first seed was sown in 1820, Christies Forestry has flourished to become one of the largest, privately owned, growers of forest trees in the UK and is now in its 7th generation of Nurserymen with Ronald Christie as Chairman, his son Neal, the Managing Director and Neal’s sons have now joined the business and are working their way up through the ranks.

“So, it's goodbye to Christies Garden Centre, but Christies (Fochabers) Limited will hopefully continue for generations to come.

“I am delighted to hand over the Garden Centre to Andrew and his team, and I look forward to seeing the changes they will be making. I would also like to congratulate Andrew on his 25th Anniversary at Simpsons Inverness.”

There are celebrations in the air as Henry Bell & Co marks its 200th anniversary. Established in Grantham, Lincolnshire, back in 1825, first as a grain mill, then a supplier of seeds and fertilisers, and a trader of cereals and pulses for local farmers, it has grown to become a market leader in the animal and pet food industry.

With an enviable reputation for its manufacturing expertise and powerful portfolio of brands, Henry Bell has had the same family at the helm for four generations.

Today’s managing director, Thomas Lee, is the great-grandson of Rothwell Lee, who bought the business in 1927.

“Sometimes, it’s good to sit back and look how far you’ve come,” said Thomas. “In our case, it’s been two whole centuries of evolution! Growing and thriving in this sector is a remarkable achievement and something we are immensely proud of. We are backed by a knowledgeable, experienced and enthusiastic team, and have embraced emerging technology and continued to nurture and refine our skills.

“Quality underpins every part of our business. It is the cornerstone of our success and the foundation on which all our products are made. We have hit this major milestone running and we’re as passionate and committed as ever to making a big difference and delivering the very best to our customers.”

Introducing micronisation and state-of-the-art computer systems has seen Henry Bell & Co become a major producer of micronised cereals, pulses, sugar beet and maize for the UK and overseas markets.

In addition to own-label manufacturing capabilities and growing export activity, Henry Bell is recognised as a force to be reckoned with in the wild bird, dried pet food and horse feed sectors. Its popular brands include the Henry Bell Wild Bird Care Collection, which was launched in 2019 with 200 feed and hardware lines, EquiGlo Horse Feeds featuring Quick Soak 10 Minute Beet and Cooked Full Fat Linseed, Mr Johnson’s small animal feeds and Dog Gone Fishin’ natural fish treats, which are made in the company’s factory in Cornwall.

GCA reports another ‘healthy’ month for garden centres with gifts topping BoT figures

Garden Centre Association members have recorded another ‘healthy’ month in the body’s May 2025 Barometer of Trade with seven of the categories listed performing positively when compared to 2024.

Figures from GCA garden centres have revealed May’s top performer was gifts at +10.07%, followed by food hall/farm shop at +9.2% and garden sundries at +8.95%.

Peter Burks, GCA CEO, explains: “We’ve seen another month of very healthy figures supporting the very significant rises we saw in March and April this year. Gifts, food halls/farm shops and garden sundries all showed very strong growth demonstrating that customers are shopping all areas even in the gardening season.

“May was the only decent spring month in 2024, without being great, which, with the decline in the weather this year, always suggested the figures were going to be less dramatic. However, our year-to-date variance is very positive at +9.49%.

“We now need some good steady weather for the next couple of months to cement those early gains and so far, June has been very warm and sunny, which is great news.”

Catering performed well in May when compared to the same month in 2024 at +6.9%, as did houseplants at +6.32% and pets & aquatics at +1.54%.

Outdoor plants came next in the GCA’s May BoT and, when compared to last year, this category was up by +1.14%, followed by furniture and BBQs slightly down at -0.23%, then the miscellaneous category -1.44% and hard landscaping at -2.33%. Next was clothing at -4.36% and seeds & bulbs at -6.02%.

The GCA’s BoT reports covering 13 categories are compiled using actual sales figures and provide an up-to-date trading position statement. They are made available mid-month following the end of the prior month after all member garden centres have submitted their results.

The BoT allows members to compare their trading positions with other centres.

Double win for Frank P Matthews at HTA Plant Show

Frank P Matthews has taken the double win for the HTA New Plants Awards and been awarded the Visitor Vote, sponsored by Floramedia, at the HTA National Plant Show 2025 at the NAEC, Stoneleigh.

Frank P Matthews has taken the double win for the HTA New Plants Awards and been awarded the Visitor Vote, sponsored by Floramedia, at the HTA National Plant Show 2025 at the NAEC, Stoneleigh.

The tree specialists also took home Best in Category – Trees, and Best in Show yesterday, sponsored by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), for their tree Prunus Sumaura Fugenzo Japanese Lantern.

Prunus Sumaura Fugenzo boasts unique flower colours and forms among all Sakura cherries. It showcases stunning, densely double-frilled flowers with white, pink, and green petals that deepen in colour as they age. This medium-sized, spreading tree has bronze young leaves that mature to green and display vibrant autumn colours. It’s an exceptional garden performer, thriving across all regions of the UK and in a variety of soil types, except those that are heavily waterlogged.

This year also marked the return of the award for Best Stand, which was awarded to Ball. The judges were Will Armitage - HTA President, Alan Down - HTA Immediate Past President and Down to Earth and Kimberley Hornby George – Co-Chair of the Garden Media Guild.

The judges were looking for an innovative display with great quality plants and attention to detail that really showcases the brand, and that is what Ball achieved.

Will Armitage, HTA President, said: “Ball has been crowned the best stand winner because you can see what they are trying to do, the story they are trying to tell. They are showcasing their best products and highlighting what they do best, without losing impact.”

Gareth Powell from Ball, who designed the stand, said: “We’re really proud to win Best Stand at the HTA National Plant Show. Sometimes less is more, and that’s what we tried to achieve here. It’s a great team effort and I’m really happy for all the guys back in West Adderbury who grew the plants.”

The runners-up for Best Stand were Allensmore and Profitplant UK.

Hot Off The Potting Bench, the feature showcasing new plant releases to the gardening public, at the recent BBC Gardener’s World Live show at the NEC Birmingham has gone down a storm with the show visitors this year.

The top twenty plants in the Visitors Vote give the retailers of plants a fantastic guide to what the public will be looking to buy from your outlet in 2026.

“While our chart shows Dahlia Velvet Crush as the very worthy winner of the Visitor Vote, the percentage of the vote column demonstrate just how much people love all plants, especially when they are new," says feature curator Nicci Gow.

There were approaching 100,000 across the four days the show was open to the gardening public, with more than double the number of votes cast this year over last year for their favourite new plant, giving retailers a really good feel for what will catch the eye of their customers in 2026.

Entries in the five categories were judged by a panel of experts, the day before the show opened to the public on the 12th June.  The winning plants in each category were:

Annuals and Bedding:  Calibrachoa Blood orange from Kernock Plants

Ornamental Trees and Shrubs: Hydrangea Francy Purple from Cooks of Stourport

Perennials: Dahlia Velvet Crush, a joint entry from Ball Horticulture and Allensmore

Edibles: Apple Rainbow from F P Matthews

House, Conservatory and Tender Plants: Streptocarpus Beverley from Dibley’s

The Dahlia Velvet Crush, went on to win the coveted Peter Seabrook Best New Plant Award at BBC Gardener’s World Live, as judge by the expert panel. This award was presented by TV personality Nikki Chapman and Peter’s son Roger Seabrook, to Amy Evans (Allensmore Nurseries Trial Officer) and Stuart Lowen, who retired earlier this month as Marketing Manager from Ball Horticulture.

With approaching 100,000 visitors to the show, the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation also use Hot Off the Potting Bench as a tool to promote to the public, the podcast series they are creating about the potential of careers in professional horticulture, ‘Cultivate Your Future’. The Foundation has also launched a package of promotional material to help retailers and suppliers promote careers in our industry to their customers and staff.

Dobbies walk raises nearly £4k for Alzheimer’s Research

Thirty staff members from Dobbies Central Support Office, based in Lasswade, completed a 25-mile fundraising walk to raise money for its national charity partner, Alzheimer’s Research UK, raising £4,150 and counting, from generous supporters...

Thirty staff members from Dobbies Central Support Office, based in Lasswade, completed a 25-mile fundraising walk to raise money for its national charity partner, Alzheimer’s Research UK, raising £4,150 and counting, from generous supporters.

The 30 participants walked the almost marathon distance from Dobbies’ Edinburgh store, through Dalkeith Country Park to the mouth of the River Esk at Musselburgh, then joined the John Muir Way along the coast to North Berwick. They began the walk at 7:30am and completed it by 5pm, taking in plenty of places with historical interest and beautiful views.

Dobbies launched its partnership with the UK’s leading dementia research charity in March 2025 as part of its 160-year celebrations. The partnership grew from gardening being a positive activity for brain health, which in turn can help reduce the risk of dementia. As part of this, Dobbies is supporting the charity’s Think Brain Health campaign to inspire people to keep their brains healthy through garden living.

Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer[1] and right now, almost one million people in the UK are living with it, putting precious memories and lives at risk. As well as increasing awareness of dementia, this partnership is raising vital funds for a cure through colleague and customer activity.

Laura Adamson, Head of PR, Communications and Events at Dobbies, who took part in the walk, is feeling proud of what the team has achieved. She said: “Our team has come together to do something really special to raise money for a meaningful cause and partnership that is close to so many of our colleagues and customers. The team has quite literally gone the extra mile to show their support for Alzheimer’s Research UK, raising vital funds to support research to find a cure for dementia.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to all our supporters who have been so generous in their donations and we are looking forward to our next fundraiser, Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Walk For A Cure, which takes place on Sunday 20 July at Holyrood Park.”

Paul Glazier, Head of Corporate Partnerships at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “From all of us at Alzheimer’s Research UK, a huge congratulations to the Dobbies Central Support Office team for going the distance to raise funds for dementia research. Walking a combined 750 miles is no mean feat.

“It’s team spirit and efforts like this that highlight why we’re proud to have Dobbies standing with us. If nothing changes, one in two of us will be directly affected by dementia – either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both. Alzheimer’s Research UK exists to change this, we exist for a cure, and with the support of everyone at Dobbies, we won’t stop until we end the heartbreak it causes.”

Hot Spring, high sales for UK garden centres

UK garden centres have wrapped up a standout Spring season, with the latest data from the Horticultural Trades Association Market Update for May 2025 revealing continued strong performance...

UK garden centres have wrapped up a standout Spring season, with the latest data from the Horticultural Trades Association Market Update for May 2025 revealing continued strong performance.

May is traditionally the busiest month for garden centre sales. This year, overall sales - including catering - were up +4% by value compared to May 2024, which was the UK's hottest May on record, and up by +2% against May 2023, a month boosted by an extra Bank Holiday for the King's Coronation.

This steady growth culminates in an exceptionally successful Spring, with year-to-date sales for garden centres up +12% compared to both 2024 and 2023. This positive trend reflects the significant impact of the UK experiencing its warmest Spring since records began.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA, commented: "Spring 2025 has delivered one of the best trading periods in recent memory for garden centres. While May's percentage increases may appear more modest than those in previous months, its significance cannot be overstated, as May is typically the largest trading month in the garden retail calendar; therefore, even small percentage increases have a significant impact. However, while this is great news, we are also mindful that these strong results are absolutely vital in helping businesses manage the increasing cost of doing business, from employment to operational expenses, which have also risen significantly this Spring.

“In terms of the numbers, gardening categories saw a more moderate performance in May than March and April, up +5% on May 2024 but down -3% on May 2023. This would suggest consumer demand for early-season categories, such as seeds and bulbs, had already been met earlier in the prolonged good weather. Nonetheless, year-to-date gardening sales remain significantly ahead of previous years.

“Meanwhile, non-gardening categories continued to do well, with sales rising +5% compared to May 2024 and an impressive +15% versus May 2023. Catering remains strong, with sales by value up 8% in May 2024 and 21% in May 2023.

“However, the market remains volatile. Consumer confidence, while recovering slightly by +3 points, remains historically cautious. The price of shipping containers rose by an alarming +70% in the past month, adding significant strain to supply chains. Additionally, while UK pay growth stands at 5.0%, exceeding the inflation rate of 4.1% (CPIH), this gap is narrowing, which could affect future consumer spending power.

“As we move into the summer months, we hope people will continue to use, enjoy and invest in their gardens. The HTA, committed to providing our members with the insights, advocacy, and resources they need, will continue to support the industry in navigating both opportunities and challenges in the months ahead.”

HTA members can access further insights in this month’s Market Update on our website.

The Greenfingers Charity iwill be making its debut at the forthcoming RHS Wentworth Woodhouse Flower Show (16-20 July), where it will present the Together Garden – a deeply meaningful and beautifully designed show garden created by Phil Hirst and Joanne Charlton.

Show visitors will be invited to see the garden in full bloom, experiencing its immersive, serene planting and thoughtful layout, all designed to inspire reflection, connection and comfort. Curving timber benches provide spaces to pause and sit together and a bespoke canopy offers shelter. Two sculptural forms evoke hands held together. But its story doesn’t end there. After the show, the plants and elements of the garden will be carefully relocated to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in Sheffield, where they will be reimagined as a permanent garden outside one of the hospice’s bereavement suites and a peaceful space for families to make memories and find moments of solace.

Speaking ahead of the show, Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising & Communications at Greenfingers Charity, said: “We are incredibly excited to be part of RHS Wentworth Woodhouse for the very first time. It’s a fantastic platform to raise awareness of the work we do, and to introduce even more people to the power of gardens in creating comfort and connection during life’s most challenging moments. We’re so grateful to Pentola – our generous sponsors of this garden – without them, this project simply wouldn’t have been possible. We’re looking forward to seeing the Together Garden come to life at the show and then go on to transform the hospice space into something truly special.”

At the heart of the Together Garden is a unique design brief: to create a space not for children, but specifically for bereaved parents and loved ones. For designer Phil Hirst, the emotional depth of the project brought new creative challenges. He said: “It was a real privilege to be asked by Greenfingers to design a garden for Bluebell Wood. Many of the charity’s gardens are centred around children, but this time the focus was different – to offer parents and families a space to process grief and find comfort. Working alongside Joanne Charlton brought fresh perspectives, and despite the sensitive nature of the project, the process has been incredibly rewarding. Showing the garden at RHS Wentworth gives us a rare opportunity to share that story with the public before it takes root in its forever home.”

That forever home, at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, is one already known for its much-loved outdoor spaces, something that will be further enriched by the addition of the Together Garden.

Samantha Wood, Income Generation & Communications Director at the hospice, shared her enthusiasm by saying: “We love our gardens at Bluebell Wood, and we’re so excited to be part of such a unique and heartfelt project. Seeing the garden debut at RHS Wentworth Woodhouse will be a proud moment but knowing it will become part of our own grounds is even more special. It will be a tranquil space for families to enjoy for years to come – somewhere peaceful and comforting, that our staff and volunteers will care for with pride. We’re so grateful to Greenfingers Charity for choosing us.”

Adding to this, Heidi Hawkins, Chief Executive of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, reflected on the deeper significance of the garden’s arrival. She said: “Having a beautiful, tranquil and welcoming outdoor space for our families to spend time together and reflect when they’re going through incredibly difficult circumstances is so important. The impact that the garden will have when it arrives at our hospice cannot be underestimated. We are enormously grateful to everyone involved in making this happen. It’s wonderful to see the designs come to life at Wentworth Woodhouse, and we’re looking forward to welcoming the garden to Bluebell Wood, where it will benefit babies, children, young adults and their families during end-of-life care.”

Old Railway Line Garden Centre and Royal Welsh Regiment Team debut on TV with David Domoney
Helping grandmother who lost her grandson in the Iraq War

ITV’s This Morning returned with another inspiring Front Garden Facelift, as Chartered Horticulturalist David Domoney surprised a deserving viewer in South Wales with a live garden transformation in under two hours.

The uplifting makeover was introduced by Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary, who joined David as he knocked on the front door of Heather, a 90-year-old grandmother nominated by her daughter, Sarah.

Heather has lived in her home for decades, enjoying views of the South Wales mountains from her front room. But with limited mobility, she had stopped sitting outside. Her daughter, Sarah, hoped a new garden would give her mum a peaceful spot to enjoy the fresh air once more.

Their story carries deeper emotional resonance. In 2009, Sarah’s son, James, was tragically killed while serving in Afghanistan at the age of 21. Since then, Heather has kept a small red poppy memorial in the garden to honour his memory. It’s a space of remembrance, reflection and resilience. Sarah has also received an MBE, recognising her important charity work in memory of her son.

Helping David with the transformation were expert volunteers from Old Railway Line Garden Centre, whose team brought both plants and practical knowledge to the live makeover.

Accessible front gardens are often overlooked, but they can have a big impact. A well-planned layout with clear paths and low-maintenance planting can make it easier for people to enjoy time outdoors. This makeover showed that a front garden can be functional without losing its visual appeal. Colourful planting and thoughtful design don’t just improve access, but they can also support mental wellbeing and make a home feel more welcoming.

“Gardens tell stories. This one reflects Heather’s life and her grandson’s memory. We’ve created a space that’s easier to move around in, filled with plants she can enjoy from her window or on the bench. It’s a small tribute with a big impact,” said David.

After two hours, the final design was revealed. The patio by the front door was extended with decking to create a safe, level space for Heather to sit and enjoy the space. Salvias lined the newly defined pathway, adding colour and movement. Pink hydrangeas accented the border edges in front of the newly stained fence.

Wall-mounted planters brought extra colour to eye level, maximising planting without taking up ground space. The lawn was decorated with striking metal poppy ornaments, a tribute to her grandson, two of which double up as water stations for birds and pollinators.

The finishing touch was a bench with a bespoke engraved plaque dedicated to Heather’s grandson James and sister Pam, creating a heartfelt focal point in a space where Heather can sit, remember, and reconnect with nature.

David said, “These makeovers wouldn’t be possible without the support of our brilliant volunteers and contributors. I’m so grateful to Old Railway Line Garden Centre, MM Mac Ltd, Slade Contractors, the Royal Welsh Regiment, and friends of the family for their time and effort. I’d also like to thank Ames Tools, Caerphilly Skip Hire, Makita, B&Q for supplying the bench, and The Fun Blue Plaque Company for their generous support. It was an honour to work alongside everyone to create a beautiful garden for Heather, a fitting gesture for someone who has been such a support to her family.”

“It’s been a real privilege to be involved,” said Liam from Old Railway Line Garden Centre. “Garden centres do more than sell plants; we help people reconnect with nature. Seeing over 100 plants go into Heather’s garden today shows just how powerful that connection can be.”

This moving makeover is part of David’s wider campaign to show that every front garden has the potential to be a haven, whether for wildlife, wellbeing, or memory. With each transformation, he’s hoping to inspire the nation to add some more nature to their front gardens.

Timber outdoor entertaining, furniture and structures specialist, Zest has entered a dynamic new phase of growth and progress under the leadership of Andrew Baker, who took on the role of Managing Director a year ago following a 16-year career with Zest including 10years as Finance Director.

The last year has seen an increasingly focused, collaborative, and customer-driven way of working – one that is already delivering new products and strong results.

Now celebrating its 20th year, Zest has innovation, customer satisfaction, and continuous improvement at the heart of the business.  It is also advancing its commitment to positive environmental and social impact, including the pursuit of B Corp accreditation as part of a broader, purpose-led approach.  With more new products, and research into a younger and more diverse target consumer, alongside continued commitment to its heartland of core garden enthusiast consumers and stockists, Zest is back at Solex with a showcase of retail opportunities.

The company is showing its outdoor cooking, dining, relaxing and entertaining collection at the show, following huge success in the 2024 season, adding more modular products and ‘sets’ to the popular Terraza Outdoor Kitchen concept which has been enhanced, as well as a new pergola and a garden shelter.

New Product Development and B Corp

In the last year Zest has appointed Reza Yaghoubi as its new product development manager.  Reza has already been with the company for two years via Zest’s commitment to its KTP Knowledge Transfer Programme.  Zest has also taken the time to commit to achieving B Corp certification which it hopes to secure this year.  Certified B Corporations are companies verified to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability and with the planet to be considered as well as profit.   Zest’s outdoor entertaining products are made from sustainable slow-grown softwood sourced from PEFC certified (PEFC/16-37-1490) forests.

Zest’s Solex launches include:

  • The Zest Terraza Outdoor Kitchen Island Set.
    • A wider selection of Zest Terraza modular units including singles and open-fronted double units. The range has been redesigned and the new models feature a sturdier frame, pre-hung doors, for simplified assembly and adjustable shelving.
  • The Zest Terraza Egg BBQ range, a choice of outdoor kitchen units designed for use with popular Egg BBQs.
  • The Zest Truro 2.4m Garden Shelter complete with back
  • The Zest Ludlow Corner Pergola with optional Back
  • The Zest Jersey Arbour and a new Lara Bench, both adding to Zest’s popular darker wood, dipped range.

Charity Commitments

Solex will also see Zest showcase commitment to its 2025 nominated charities, Multiple Sclerosis Society Cymru and North Clwyd Animal Rescue (NCAR) to mark Zest’s 20th anniversary.  So far, the company has raised over half of its £24,000 target from numerous employee events.  These have included Zest’s annual charity yard sale, participation in marathons and half marathons including London  and Chester, The Survivor endurance event, and the completion of the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge in which a Zest team led by Andrew Baker tackled Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), Cadair Idris, and Pen y Fan all in a single day.

Promotional Support for Stockists

As in previous years, Zest will be promoting the complete cooking and entertaining collection in national consumer magazines in its Spring and Summer 2026 campaign as well as in digital media to build brand awareness and signpost customers to stockists, and online retailers.

Commenting on Zest’s Solex presence, Andrew said, “Zest is continuing its journey into a consumer-focussed era, and we know we are on the right path.  The ‘entertain, relax’ outdoor concept has been well researched with consumers and is also proven in terms of sales, so we adding to this exciting retail offer with even more appealing kitchen sets and modular options.

“I am also delighted in our 20th year to see so much progress on charity fundraising, which is not only good for the charities the company supports, but equally good for employee mental health.”

In his Zest career, Andrew has been a lead on chosen charity initiatives ensuring the company is looking to raise over £200,000 by the end of 2025.  He is a keen marathon runner, and health and wellbeing is a key factor for the whole company.

Wyevale Nurseries has scooped the coveted Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce Award for Excellence in Sustainability at the organisation’s recent annual celebration evening at Worcester Arena.

The Chamber Business Award, sponsored by Herefordshire Council and Worcestershire County Council, recognises companies across the two counties that have excelled in their environmental practices.

Managing Director at Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford, Andy Johnson says: “We’re so delighted to have been presented with this wonderful award sponsored by Vinegar Works for our environmental initiatives. Sustainability is at the heart of our long-term business goals. We’re focused on carbon capture, water management, lowering chemical use, investing in efficient infrastructure and reducing our carbon footprint. We’re continuously improving practices and are invested in good biosecurity to support a resilient and thriving local ecosystem too.

“All our teams, in every part of the business, work exceptionally hard to deliver solid annual sustainability targets and it is a testament to their dedication and commitment that we’ve received this fantastic award. I can’t thank them enough for their contribution.”

Wyevale Nurseries, which celebrates its 95th anniversary in business this year, has a proactive approach to sustainability, which involves leading with innovation rather than reacting to environmental challenges. Its activities encompass responsible sourcing, environmentally-sound production methods and biodiversity enhancement.

Andy adds: “Our key policies include peat reduction and the use of sustainable substrates, water conservation, energy efficiency and managing biodiversity and ecological impact, as well as sustainable land management and waste reduction.

“Our future goals include introducing a greater climate-resilient plant range, aiming to be fully peat-free by 2028 and integrating technology and sustainability, such as AI-driven resource management, into our systems. The focus is on doing the right things, at the right scale and time, to ensure our business thrives while contributing positively to the planet.

“We’re also working on implementing a full carbon audit across our supply chain to measure and reduce emissions further and are encouraging suppliers to adopt closed-loop recycling systems for materials and packaging. We’re looking at increasing the use of solar and wind power in production with growers and suppliers too.

“Strategic logistics planning has cut unnecessary journeys, reducing transport-related emissions and a shift to recyclable packaging has removed thousands of single-use plastic items from circulation.

“By embedding sustainability across our supply chain, we’re helping drive the horticultural industry towards a net zero, climate-resilient future, ensuring that every plant grown supports a healthier planet.”

Miracle-Gro sponsors Floral Fantasia at RHS Hyde Hall

As part of its continued commitment to inspiring gardeners of all levels, Miracle-Gro is sponsoring the vibrant Floral Fantasia Garden at RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex for the 2025-2026 season...

As part of its continued commitment to inspiring gardeners of all levels, Miracle-Gro is sponsoring the vibrant Floral Fantasia Garden at RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex for the 2025-2026 season.

Through the partnership Miracle-Gro will provide peat-free compost, to the gardeners of the Floral Fantasia garden, reflecting the charity’s vision where gardening is a source of joy and fulfilment, building healthier lives, stronger communities and thriving environments.

Set in the heart of Essex, this unique garden has become a living showcase of seasonal planting, and innovation, highlighting the beauty and diversity possible in gardens of all sizes. Born in 2018 as a bold transformation of a former vegetable plot, the Floral Fantasia display quickly bloomed into a beloved destination, where visitors can experience a blend of traditional favourites and exciting new plant varieties in full bloom.

Bringing Floral Fantasia to life

Sponsoring Floral Fantasia aligns perfectly with Miracle-Gro’s campaign, Bringing Gardens to Life. More than just growing vibrant blooms, lush lawns, and bountiful produce, the campaign champions the broader benefits of spending time in the garden—whether through planting, playing, or simply relaxing outdoors. By supporting Floral Fantasia, Miracle-Gro is helping to create an inspiring, accessible space that encourages people of all ages and abilities to reconnect with nature and discover the wellbeing boost that gardening brings, at same time as showcasing the great performance of Miracle Gro peat-free compost.

This partnership offers a living embodiment of the campaign’s message: that gardens are not only spaces for growth, but also for joy, creativity, and connection. From the immersive plant trials to the colourful displays designed to spark imagination, Floral Fantasia provides the ideal backdrop to demonstrate how Miracle-Gro sustainable, peat free compost mixes help transform everyday gardens into vibrant, life-enhancing spaces.

The transition to peat-free gardening is one that the Miracle-Gro brand has helped drive since going completely peat-free in 2023. Miracle-Gro's years of research and investment in R&D and manufacturing to delivery exceptional quality and growing performance of peat-free compost ensures that gardeners can be confident that they will get great growing results in their own garden, whatever they are growing.

Karen Wilkinson, marketing director at Evergreen Garden Care said, “We’re thrilled to partner with RHS Garden Hyde Hall’s Floral Fantasia this season and show how Miracle-Gro products truly bring gardens to life. Our mission at Evergreen Garden Care perfectly aligns with that of the RHS, to nurture the nation’s love of growing with sustainable practices, and we hope in visiting the garden this year gardeners of all abilities are inspired to do so.”

The Peter Seabrook legacy

At the heart of Floral Fantasia is the legacy of Peter Seabrook – the late gardening icon, broadcaster, and passionate advocate for seasonal horticulture. Peter’s vision, supported by plant breeder Thompson & Morgan, helped shape the garden into a national hub for bedding plant trials and a vibrant platform for horticultural education and inspiration. Since his passing in 2022, a dedicated working group has carried the garden forward, ensuring Floral Fantasia remains a beacon for innovation, learning, and beauty. With Miracle-Gro’s support this year, the garden continues to flourish, welcoming a new phase of development under a thoughtful redesign by RHS Council Member James Alexander-Sinclair.

Peter’s lifelong love for sweet peas lives on here. Since the garden’s beginning, they’ve been grown each year to be cut for the Hyde Hall cafés — filling the air with scent. Look out for the commemorative Sweet Pea ‘Peter Seabrook’, with £1 from every packet sold going straight to the Floral Fantasia Fund, which provides yet another valuable income stream.

What’s in store at Floral Fantasia this season?

A major highlight of 2025 at Floral Fantasia is the eagerly anticipated RHS Begonia Trial, which will see over 400 plants take centre stage in a dazzling summer display. Running from early June through to September, this large-scale trial will showcase 105 cultivars across two distinct formats: 51 varieties grown in raised beds within the trial garden area, and 54 container-grown entries placed around the perimeter. With 162 begonias in pots and 255 in-ground specimens, the trial offers visitors a comprehensive look at the versatility and vibrancy of this much-loved seasonal plant.

Floral Fantasia is made up of two complementary zones; The Trials Area, four formal beds designed for comparative planting — where horticultural science meets summer spectacle, and The Flower Garden, an ever-changing canvas of beds, baskets, and containers brimming with creative combinations and seasonal style.

The trial will span a breathtaking spectrum of colours—from soft creams and delicate apricots to fiery scarlets, deep pinks, and rich cherry reds. Representing some of the most notable begonia collections in horticulture, including the Nonstop, Illumination, Bossa Nova, and Funky series, this year's entries demonstrate both diversity and innovation. Visitors will be invited to vote for their favourites through a People's Choice Poll running throughout the season, with official judging taking place on four key dates between July and September.

This unique garden brings together all the key players in the plant journey; breeders like Kerley & Co, who create new varieties through decades of development, propagators such as Ball Colegrave and Volmary who multiply plants for mass availability, and growers like W.D. Smith who finish the process, producing retail-ready plants for garden centres and supermarkets. Together, they support a one-of-a-kind public trial ground that brings the industry and the gardening public together.

The RHS Garden Hyde Hall Flower Show, featuring the Floral Fantasia Garden, is an annual event held at the stunning RHS Hyde Hall garden in Chelmsford, Essex, between Wednesday 30 July and Sunday 3 August.

Samantha Gibbs says, “As someone who's spent years working as an independent retailer, I know firsthand the challenges other indie retailers on our high streets face - from rising costs to changing consumer behaviours. The Retail Makeover Mission represents exactly the kind of support these businesses need right now. At Nest, we believe strongly in the power of independent retail and the value they bring - these are the businesses that give our high streets character and offer customers something truly special. I'm excited to be part of a campaign that doesn't just talk about supporting indies but actually rolls up its sleeves and does something meaningful to help them succeed. These retailers are the backbone of our communities, and they deserve every opportunity to flourish.”

Claire Bevan says, “With three shops onsite at the Natural History Museum, thinking creatively about how to connect our visitors with a retail experience that excites, inspires and educates – in the same way that our galleries and exhibitions do – is a wonderful adventure. From sustainability and encouraging shop footfall from the passing crowds to pop-up collaborations and creating brilliant products, there’s a wealth of experience from the last 17 years that I’m excited to share with the independent retailers we’ll be working with. We can learn so much from these independent businesses and how they bring joy to their customers. Helping them to thrive as resilient, sustainable retailers as part of the Retail Makeover Mission task team will be a real privilege.”

Soraya Gadelrab, Event Director, Autumn Fair adds, “We are delighted to reveal such a high-profile team of experts offering a wealth of knowledge and experience. The Retail Makeover Mission presents a rare opportunity for indies to gain access to expertise and tools, previously out of reach for many small businesses. The initiative comes at a critical time for independent retail, as businesses face rising operational costs, shifting customer expectations, and the urgent need for digital and experiential evolution. Retailers need more than advice - they need partners who can roll up their sleeves and achieve results – our brilliant Task Team will do just that.”

The two winning businesses will be selected and supported through a structured programme, with their transformation journey documented and revealed live at Autumn Fair 2025.

Four Wyevale Nurseries staff rewarded for 158 years of service between them

Four colleagues from Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford have been rewarded for their long service after collectively achieving 158 years of employment at the UK’s leading commercial grower between them...

Four colleagues from Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford have been rewarded for their long service after collectively achieving 158 years of employment at the UK’s leading commercial grower between them.

Nick Tipping, who has marked 30 years’ service, Adrian Hoare and Simon Williams, who both celebrated 40 years and Russell Abell, 48 years, received awards at The Three Counties Show.

Heather Williamson, Wyevale Nurseries’ Chairman, whose grandfather started the award-winning business 95 years ago, says: “Russell was given a Silver Medal for his 48 years of service, Adrian and Simon also received Silvers and Nick a Bronze Medal for 30 years. These awards were presented on June 13 by the Three Counties Agricultural Society* to acknowledge the loyalty and longevity these four have shown to us and all their colleagues. We couldn’t be prouder of all they have accomplished and their commitment to our company across the decades.

“Russell, who is our Transport Manager, is one of our longest serving employees and started working for us when my grandfather was at the helm back in 1977. He began in our Despatch Department before completing a three-year nursery apprenticeship covering all aspects of horticulture.

“He then worked in our Container and Tree Divisions before returning to despatch, where he progressed to logistics. As the business grew, Russell developed relationships with hauliers and has helped to establish our excellent reputation for service. He is now approaching retirement and would like to thank him for his long years of service and dedication. He will be very much missed.”

Wyevale Nurseries’ Garden Design & Domestic Landscape Manager Adrian Hoare has been with the business for 40 years.

Heather explains: “Adrian does a marvellous job looking after our cash and carry customers, local landowners and landscape designers and is known for being extremely knowledgeable and helpful. No customer is too small, and no request is too much for Adrian. His plant knowledge and ability to help a customer pull a planting scheme together from the plants available on the nursery is much admired. His colleagues enjoy his company, as much as he enjoys mentoring them too.

“He is also our resident birder and wildlife enthusiast. Every year he does the annual bird and insect counts onsite and takes pride in our wildlife welfare; all in addition to his actual job.”

Simon Williams, who has also marked 40 years with the business, is Wyevale Nurseries’ Commercial Director.

Heather says: “Following a farming background and graduating from Reading University in maths and statistics, Simon joined us as a trainee accountant, doing day release at Redditch College to gain his ACMA professional qualifications. He went on to take responsibility for audit, budgeting, management accounts and a host of compliance work with extra remits for IT projects and new systems, transport and workshop teams, plus HR functions.

“Simon is retiring in September. We’d like to thank him for everything he has helped us build across the last four decades. His loyalty, experience and fine eye for detail are second to none.”

Nick Tipping started working at Wyevale Nurseries as a seasonal staff member in 1995.

“Nick, our Potting Shed Team Leader, has gained experience in all areas and is a true nurseryman. His willingness to tackle any task and to work when others are unavailable, such as at weekends, is greatly appreciated by us all. Thank you – you have helped shape the nursery into what it is today.”

Silver Merit Award for Garden Organic’s show garden at BBC Gardeners’ World Live Show

Sustainable gardening charity Garden Organic has won a ‘Silver Merit’ award in the Showcase Garden category for its Ecotalk ‘Rooted in Nature’ Garden at BBC Gardeners’ World Live show at the Birmingham NEC...

Sustainable gardening charity Garden Organic has won a ‘Silver Merit’ award in the Showcase Garden category for its Ecotalk ‘Rooted in Nature’ Garden at BBC Gardeners’ World Live show at the Birmingham NEC.

The judges commended the garden for being ‘packed full of wildlife habitats and ways to help nature thrive alongside inspiring ways to grow your own food’.

The garden, sponsored by green mobile network Ecotalk, shows how diversely-planted kitchen gardens can buffer the biodiversity crisis. Based around the charity’s research paper, Every Garden Matters, the specially designed show garden illustrates easy ways to maximise wildlife and manage water while growing your own food.

"We're delighted to have won a ‘silver merit’ award and have had some really positive feedback about the garden and its theme of food growing and nature” says Emma O’Neill, Head Gardener at Garden Organic. “Our garden is all about showing people what's possible in their own small gardens. Even if you're growing veg, we show how there's still plenty of room for flowers and habitats for all kinds of wildlife. And as you nurture them, they will nurture your crops and soil health."

Garden Organic is committed to promoting organic growing and composting helping people grow the organic way using natural methods to promote healthy biodiverse and sustainable gardens. It has been leading the way in researching and demonstrating best practice in organic growing for more than 65 years.

For those who missed the show you can visit an organic garden at Garden Organic’s Ryton headquarters near Coventry on special open days throughout the year. Visit gardenorganic.org.uk/get-involved/courses-and-events to find out dates for the next open days.

The show garden was made possible by a range of sponsors, including Ecotalk, Viridian Nutrition, Everedge, Evengreener, Breedon Aggregates and Rolawn.Special thanks also go to Wildwater for creating the beautiful pond, Melcourt for its high-quality peat-free compost and The Wildlife Community for the amazing giant bug hotel (which can be won at the show).

The International Association of Horticultural Producers has approved Iberflora 2025 as an AIPH-recognised D Category International Horticultural Trade Show. The approval follows a nomination from ACPO (Asociación de Cultivadores de Plantas Ornamentales), AIPH’s member in Spain.

Iberflora, held annually at Feria Valencia, will mark its 54th edition from 14 to 16 October 2025. Organised by the public institution Feria Valencia and supported by key national grower and nursery associations, the fair remains the benchmark meeting point for professionals in the green sector across Spain and beyond.

With nearly 350 exhibitors already confirmed, four months ahead of the event, and over 15,000 visitors expected, Iberflora showcases the breadth of the ornamental horticulture industry, covering plants and flowers, landscaping, garden tools, technology, and outdoor living. The show spans 35,000 m² of permanent exhibition halls and is supported by associations from all major growing regions of Spain.

AIPH Secretary General Tim Briercliffe commented: “Iberflora has consistently shown leadership in connecting producers, retailers, and innovators across the Mediterranean region. Its commitment to quality, professionalism, and sustainable horticulture makes it a valued addition to AIPH’s portfolio of recognised events.”

HTA brings blooms to the Senedd to celebrate Welsh horticulture

The Horticultural Trades Association, supported by retailer member The Old Railway Line, met with Senedd Members (MSs) at its first event of bringing blooms into the Senedd.

Following the success of similar drop-ins in Westminster, the HTA set up the event to take plants, seeds, and the value of Welsh environmental horticulture directly to policymakers. Meeting over 20 Senedd Members and staff provided an opportunity to champion the voice of HTA members in Wales and discuss some of their top issues.

The event, sponsored by James Evans MS, saw HTA members' plants, bulbs, and Welsh poppy seeds being given away, alongside discussions on the HTA’s Welsh Growth Strategy, which highlights the sector's potential to deliver growth and solutions to pressing challenges.

Jennifer Pheasey, Director of Public Affairs, HTA, commented: "We welcome the chance to ensure policymakers recognise the immense potential of environmental horticulture to drive economic growth, enhance our environment, and improve the health and wellbeing of communities in Wales. The HTA represents over 85 Welsh horticulture businesses, including retailers, growers, suppliers and landscapers. The Welsh sector contributes over £1 billion to the UK's GDP and supports approximately 32,000 jobs. This should be celebrated and recognised. It was a successful opportunity, and we thank James Evans MS for his support. We are looking forward to growing our representation and voice in the Senedd, to get even greater recognition of the opportunities that horticulture offers.”

James Evans MS - Member of the Senedd for Brecon and Radnorshire and Conservative Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs, said: "My sincere thanks go to the HTA and The Old Railway Line for bringing this vital sector directly to the attention of the Senedd today. The HTA offers practical, homegrown solutions for a stronger economy and a greener Wales. We must ensure this sector receives the recognition and backing it deserves."

Katie Eckley, Operations Director, The Old Railway Line, said: "The Old Railway Line is a family-run, independent business proudly nestled in the Wye Valley, attracting customers from all over Wales and across the border. We welcomed the chance to talk about what we do directly with Members of the Senedd. Plants are the heart of our business, and it was fantastic to share some of them with those who are making policies impacting our business. As the HTA Council member for Wales, I am pleased to join the HTA to give a voice to the sector and encourage more HTA members to get involved, host visits, and share their passion for horticulture.”

Young People in Horticulture Association has unveiled the results of its inaugeral Launch Success Challenge, culminating in the official debut of Bountiful Pink — a vibrant new plant variety — at BBC Gardeners’ World Live.

This milestone marks the collective achievement of ten delegates, all under the age of 35 and from diverse horticultural backgrounds, who have spent the past year developing the plant’s journey from concept to consumer.

The challenge began in the Netherlands at Beekenkamp Plants, where the delegates witnessed the early stages of Bountiful Pink’s development and gained insight into the breeding and propagation process. Over the following months, the group engaged in a comprehensive series of masterclasses focused on branding, marketing, cost analysis, retail logistics, and pitching strategy — all designed to mirror the real-world complexities of launching a new horticultural product.

Their efforts will come to fruition this week with Bountiful Pink’s public launch in partnership with British Garden Centres, placing the plant directly into the hands of UK gardeners. The project not only champions innovation and youth engagement in horticulture but also provides a replicable blueprint for industry-backed, skills-based learning initiatives.

New data crowns Cardiff as UK’s gardening capital

New research shows Welsh residents lead the way when it comes to time spent gardening...

New research shows Welsh residents lead the way when it comes to time spent gardening.

The nationwide survey of 2000 people found Cardiff is the UK's most dedicated city when it comes to gardening, with residents spending a day a month (24 hours) tending to their outdoor spaces, spending 41% more time gardening than the UK average of 17 hours. Wales was identified as the most green-fingered region, with locals spending over a full day (27 hours) gardening each month.

Despite being dubbed the UK's greenest city with more trees than people, Sheffield was revealed to be one of the areas where people spend the least time gardening (14 hours), alongside Manchester (14 hours) and Edinburgh (14 hours).

Time spent gardening by city (hours per month):

  • Cardiff - 24
  • Norwich - 21
  • Belfast - 21
  • Birmingham - 20
  • Plymouth - 20
  • Liverpool - 19
  • Southampton - 19
  • Glasgow - 19
  • Newcastle - 17
  • Leeds - 17
  • Bristol - 16
  • Brighton - 16
  • Nottingham - 16
  • London - 16
  • Manchester - 14
  • Edinburgh - 14
  • Sheffield - 14

The research was commissioned by savings platform Raisin to uncover the similarities between the nation’s savings and gardening habits. Gardeners mirror effective savers in many ways, for example both require patience and a long term strategy to see the full benefits. This research set out to understand how much savers and gardeners do have in common and what can be learnt from either skillset.

In fact, when asked about the top traits to make a successful saver or gardener, being calm, organised and adaptable, were some of the top qualities identified by respondents for both. Almost three-quarters (71%) agreed it is important to carry out research before making garden or savings decisions.

While time spent gardening was high, researching what savings account to open was slightly lower, at 16 hours on average across the UK. All cities were revealed to spend 22 hours or less researching savings options.

Kevin Mountford, co-founder and personal finance expert at Raisin, said:

“While at first savings and gardening might not appear very similar, there are many elements to gardening that translate to saving. It’s not just about personality traits like being calm, organised and adaptable - it is about the long game. In both cases, taking time up front to research your options based on your specific situation can see you make great rewards down the line. For example, with savings specifically, if you have the cash available, putting it into an ISA or Fixed rate bond could see you benefit from competitive returns on your investment over time.”

Time spent researching savings options by city (hours per month):

  • Nottingham - 22
  • Sheffield - 22
  • Glasgow - 21
  • Brighton - 21
  • Newcastle - 18
  • Bristol - 17
  • Norwich - 17
  • Birmingham - 17
  • Liverpool - 16
  • Cardiff - 16
  • London - 16
  • Southampton - 14
  • Belfast - 14
  • Edinburgh - 14
  • Manchester - 13
  • Plymouth - 13
  • Leeds - 9

Kevin continued: “It isn’t just about the similarities we see between savers and gardeners. A well-maintained garden can have a direct benefit to your overall wealth, adding up to 20% to the market value of your home. So, taking a leaf out of the Welsh books, could see you sow the seeds to a successful increase in your home’s value.”

Gardening expert and author, Simon Akeroyd, added his advice on how to maximise the value of the garden:

“If you’re looking for ways to get greenfingered in the garden there are lots of things you can do that can have many benefits for all the household. For example, you could consider brightening up your flowerbeds with perennials, slow-growing shrubs, and small trees. These often require less effort than annual plants and focusing directly on the soil, rather than small containers and hanging baskets means you won’t have to spend time watering them everyday, particularly in drier periods. Mulching over any bare areas of the soil will keep the garden more manageable and make it look neater and less hard work, as well as reducing the need for weeding and watering.

“Or you could grow your own strawberries (These are perennials - Perennial plants are defined by their ability to live for multiple years, returning each season after dying back in the winter.) This can be both rewarding and money saving, a small pack can cost a couple of pounds, growing them at home can give you bumper crops at a fraction of the price.”

Alton Garden Centre set to leave Tillington Group

Alton Garden Centre has decided to leave the Tillington Group on 30th September.

Alton Garden Centre has decided to leave the Tillington Group on 30th September.

Derek Bunker stated: “We have had many fantastic years with the group but Tillington is now moving in a direction that is no longer suitable for Alton Garden Centre. Therefore, we have taken the difficult decision to step away from the group and focus on our business.”

James Evans from Ruxley Manor and Tillington chairman, commented: “Alton, with Andy and Derek Bunker in particular, have been a great addition to Tillington over the years but we fully understand their reasons for stepping away and we thank them for their input and wish them the best of luck for the future. Tillington is at an exciting stage, with some great new initiatives and so we look forward to continuing to drive the group forward.”

Greenfingers Charity founder, Richard Jackson, awarded MBE for charitable services to children’s hospices

Richard Jackson, Founder President of Greenfingers Charity and a passionate advocate for the gardening industry, has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours for his outstanding charitable work...

Richard Jackson, Founder President of Greenfingers Charity and a passionate advocate for the gardening industry, has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours for his outstanding charitable work. The honour comes at a particularly poignant time, as the Greenfingers Charity celebrates its 25th anniversary – a milestone he marked at this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live, the very event where the charity was officially launched in 1999.

The King’s Honours list recognises individuals who have made exceptional contributions to society, with awards such as MBEs (Member of the Order of the British Empire) presented for achievements in public life and dedication to service. Published twice a year – at New Year and on the King’s official birthday in June – the honours celebrate the unsung heroes whose efforts make a significant difference in their communities.

There is little doubt as to why Richard has been so deserving of the honour bestowed upon him. In 1998, with a vision of uniting the horticultural industry behind a common cause – to create magical, therapeutic gardens for children’s hospices across the UK – he founded the Greenfingers Charity. Over the last two and half decades the charity has grown exponentially, and has now designed and delivered over 70 inspirational outdoor spaces, bringing comfort, joy and precious moments to hundreds of life-limited children and their families.

In addition to founding Greenfingers, Richard remains a steadfast supporter of the gardening sector. In 2006, he was instrumental in establishing the annual Garden Press Event, now a key date in the industry calendar, connecting gardening brands and media to champion new products and innovation.

Reflecting on his MBE, Richard Jackson said: "I am truly humbled and honoured to receive this recognition. The Greenfingers Charity has always been about the industry coming together to make a real difference to the lives of children with life-limiting conditions. This award is a reflection of everyone who has supported the charity over the years – from our volunteers to the garden designers, hospice staff, sponsors and fundraisers. I share this with them all."

Boyd Douglas-Davies, Chair of the Greenfingers Charity, added:  "Richard’s vision and passion created something incredibly special with Greenfingers. For 25 years, his tireless commitment has ensured that children and families facing the most difficult of circumstances can enjoy peace, beauty and happiness in a garden designed just for them. We are thrilled to see his efforts recognised in such a prestigious way. It’s a wonderful tribute and so well deserved."

With one day to go, BBC Gardeners World Live has been a huge success for trade exhibitors and garden designers with British Garden Centres leading the way in terms of garden retailing at the NEC show and Greenfingers celebrating 25 years with an Anniversary Garden that has been a truly moving and memorable feature, celebrating 25 years of creating therapeutic gardens in children’s hospices across the UK.

The Greenfingers garden, designed by award-winning garden designer Pip Probert, has given the industries charity a wonderful platform to engage with the gardening public and share the impact of the amazing work we all help facilitate.

Greenfingers Charity Chairman, Boyd Douglas-Davies told GTN Xtra: “It has been a fantastic show, so far. Safe to say we have the most colourful garden in the show!

“We have had lots of lovely comments every single day and even more today following the great coverage on BBC Gardeners' World last night.”

Director of Fundraising & Communications, Linda Petrons, added: "It’s been such a joy to meet so many supporters, old and new, and to celebrate this milestone with them. We’re so thankful to everyone who has contributed, whether through sponsorship, time, or kind words. This garden has truly been a team effort and a beautiful reminder of what can be achieved when people come together for a meaningful cause.

“We are incredibly grateful to British Garden Centres, Miracle-Gro, and all our generous supporters who helped bring this garden to life. A special thank you goes to our amazing volunteers, whose enthusiasm and dedication over the past few days have been invaluable.”

In the floral marquee 100 “hot off the potting bench” new plant varieties were displayed to visitors, whetting their appetite for buying in 2026.

In the retailing halls, British Garden Centres stole the show for garden centre retailing, not only sponsoring the main stage with amazing visual merchandising displays but also providing the biggest show gardening shopping experience of the event.

Scotsdales open their new 480 seater Greenhouse Café

Scotsdales in Cambridge opened their new 480 seater Greenhouse Café...

Scotsdales in Cambridge opened their new 480 seater Greenhouse Café this week.  “Wow” and “This really is going out for a treat” were comments from customers seeing the new restaurant when GTN Xtra visited on Saturday.

With three distinct seating areas; the Library, the Greenhouse and a large family and children’s area, plus a dog friendly seating area, the new restaurant has a palatial ambience that customers are really enjoying.

As well as opening a new restaurant, with much larger kitchen facilities “we can now bake our own bread” the Scotsdales team have also been the first centre to go live with app ordering with their Epos supplier Davidson Richards.

With the Davidson Richardson team on site to solve the inevitable teething problems, already app ordering is averaging at 30% rising to 50% in busy periods.  Most importantly the average transaction value of app orders is already higher than the till placed orders.

Scotsdales Managing Director, Caroline Owen, explained that the new café was originally planned to happen in 2021/2022 but got postponed due to Covid “I’m so pleased with the way it has worked out and all of the tea have been fantastic in rising to the new challenge.”

See GTN Xtra’s photo tour of the new Greenhouse Café below, plus a few photos of the centre now that phase 2 of the redevelopment is open.  Phase three, the move of Houseplants into the old Sunflower Café area and the expansion of the Food Hall will open in September 2025.

Squire's appoints new directors as business looks to future

Squire’s Garden Centres has appointed two new executive directors  and two new non-executive directors to its board, reinforcing the company’s long-standing commitment to strong leadership, retail expertise and its core horticultural values...

Above, from left:  Ricky Bowness - Retail Buying Director, Elizabeth Squire - Non-Executive Director, Colin Squire OBE - Chairman Emeritus, Sarah Squire - Chairman and Ross McEwan - Retail Operations Director.

Squire’s Garden Centres has appointed two new executive directors  and two new non-executive directors to its board, reinforcing the company’s long-standing commitment to strong leadership, retail expertise and its core horticultural values.

Ricky Bowness has been promoted to Retail Buying Director, following his most recent role as Group Purchasing Manager. Ricky joined Squire’s in 2010 with a decade of experience in the horticultural sector. He has since managed several garden centres within the group, including Woking, West Horsley and Milford, before transitioning into a senior head office role in 2024.

Ricky holds a degree in Landscape Management from the University of Reading and is a Chartered Accountant. His broad expertise in operations, combined with deep sector knowledge and commercial insight, will further strengthen Squire’s strategic buying capabilities across its estate.

Ross McEwan has been appointed to the role of Retail Operations Director. Ross began his journey with Squire’s in 1996 as a weekend assistant and has gone on to build an impressive career in garden retail. A graduate in Horticulture from Writtle College, Ross has managed multiple Squire’s centres and held senior roles at the Royal Horticultural Society, where he led key retail design and development projects, including at RHS Garden Wisley.

Ross returned to Squire’s in 2020, bringing his strong retail background and a wealth of insight of retail operations, launching the business’ e-commerce presence as well as spearheading the company’s sustainability strategy. His appointment marks a key step in further shaping the future customer experience at Squire’s.

In addition to the two executive director appointments, Squire’s has also appointed two non-executive directors from within the founding family. Elizabeth Squire and Mark Cody have joined the board, contributing external perspectives and supporting the company’s long-term development. Elizabeth, sister of Chairman, Sarah Squire, is a former Royal Navy officer now working in the technology sector. Nephew of Colin Squire, Mark is Managing Director of the international operations of a large US-based insurance broker.

Sarah Squire, Chairman - Squire’s Garden Centres, comments: “I am so pleased to welcome our new directors to the Board. Ross and Ricky both have strong experience with our company as it has grown, as well as in-depth knowledge of the industry. They are extremely capable and very much in tune with our values. I am confident they will make a hugely significant contribution to our business in their new capacity as directors and I am delighted that they are joining the Board.

“The appointment of Elizabeth and Mark demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the family to the success of our company. They bring their experience from other sectors and will challenge our thinking and promote healthy discussion.

“As we look ahead to the 90th anniversary of our company in 2026, and with the appointment of our new Managing Director, Sam Dickson, joining us in late June, these board changes mark an important step in shaping the future of our business. They bring fresh perspectives and additional expertise, while ensuring we remain firmly rooted in the values and heritage that define Squire’s.”

The appointments mark a natural step in the ongoing progression of the Surrey-based, family-owned business, which operates 17 garden centres and two nurseries across the South East and has been a trusted name in horticulture for almost nine decades.

Nature’s Lawn creates new retail opportunities

As consumers continue their quest to transform unassuming outdoor buildings into things of beauty with living roofs, Nature’s Lawn from Johnsons Lawn Seed offers the ultimate solution, helping garden retailers to tap into this continued trend...

As consumers continue their quest to transform unassuming outdoor buildings into things of beauty with living roofs, Nature’s Lawn from Johnsons Lawn Seed offers the ultimate solution, helping garden retailers to tap into this continued trend.

Generating opportunities beyond lawncare, Nature’s Lawn is an innovative seed mix that combines slow-growing grasses with native wildflowers; ideal for giving any boring outdoor building a facelift by creating a luscious green roof with all the ecological benefits of a thriving wildflower meadow.

Not just a pretty view

More than just a beautiful aesthetic, the popular trend for creating green spaces on the roofs of outdoor buildings, such as bin and bike stores – and even the traditional garden shed – is also born out of a renewed interest in supporting wildlife.

Consumers are more aware of environmental factors and value the role pollinators play in our ecosystem, which is why they are actively seeking new ways to garden in harmony with nature, trying to ‘do their bit’ even if they don’t have a large lawn or garden to play with.

Green roofs are the perfect way to for gardeners to improve their view and increase biodiversity in their outdoor space at the same time. Bin stores with integrated roof planters are now widely available to buy, whilst a quick search online brings up a wealth of ‘how to’ tutorials on how to build your own wooden frame to top any outdoor building, making it easily accessible for consumers with any budget or skill level.

Easy to maintain

Garden retailers can support customers with their living roof ambitions by providing easy pick-up products and inspiring them to go for something more inviting than sedum on a roll, adding interest with their own aerial low-maintenance wildflower meadow. Nature's Lawn boasts a carefully selected blend of slow-growing grasses and UK-native perennial wildflowers that can tolerate regular mowing or cutting. The seed mix attracts pollinators, like butterflies and bees while maintaining a beautiful blooming and rooftop lawn.

One of the standout features of Nature's Lawn is the freedom to choose the desired cutting height, ranging from 50mm to 150mm. By trimming less frequently or leaving the grass slightly longer, users can create ideal conditions for the wildflowers to thrive and, because the lawn is designed to remain manageable and aesthetically pleasing without growing too tall, gardeners won’t feel overrun. All of this spells great news for the environment and means less maintenance for your customers.

The wildflowers will self-seed over time, gradually increasing their presence and enhancing the overall natural beauty of the rooftop lawn, keeping pollinators coming back for more.

The inclusion of slow-growing grasses like Strong Creeping Red Fescue, Chewings Fescue, and Hard Fescue ensures a durable and resilient raised lawn that will do well in full sun or shade, with little effort.

Guy Jenkins, Consumer Manager at Johnsons Lawn Seed said: “At Johnsons, we are always looking to create new and exciting opportunities for retailers. Our innovative Nature’s Lawn with Mowable Native Wildflowers allows gardeners to think differently about their lawns and get more creative. We know living roofs are a wonderful trend to help improve biodiversity in outdoor spaces, so why not do that with grass and native wildflowers? Our innovative seed mix can help create a beautiful, low-maintenance rooftop garden that works in harmony with nature and that your customers will love. It’s an easy way for them to help pollinators thrive, bring colour to their outdoor space, and transform a nondescript, functional outdoor building into a thing of beauty. It’s a win/win, particularly as it has potential to increase basket spend.”

Nature’s Lawn is offered in 400g cartons with an RRP of £12.99.
