GCA announces top-scoring regional centres
The Garden Centre Association has recently revealed its area award winners during presentations held at member garden centres...

The Garden Centre Association has recently revealed its area award winners during presentations held at member garden centres.

Awards were presented to garden centres in the North Thames, North West, South Thames, Wales & West, Midlands and North East regions with the winners in Scotland and Northern Ireland to be announced on August 31.

Iain Wylie, Chief Executive of the GCA, said: “During each presentation evening inspectors for each area announced their findings after carrying out their inspections earlier in the year, highlighting best practice and new ideas as well as revealing the area winners in the two categories: Destination Garden Centre (DGC) and Garden Centre (GC).

"We would like to say a huge congratulations to all of the winners and a big 'thank you' to The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, Tong Garden Centre, RHS Wisley, Thurrock Garden Centre and Pennells Garden Centre - Lincoln for playing hosts for the various events.

“The results from the inspections form the basis for many of the national GCA awards, which will be presented at next year's conference, which is in St. Andrews from January 22 until 25.”

The final area awards evening for Scotland and Northern Ireland will take place on Wednesday, August 31 at Creative Gardens Galgorm Castle.

Discount retailer reaches 100 garden centres milestone
Leading discount retailer B&M has opened its 100th garden centre in Salisbury and has plans to open a further 10 centres before the end of the year...
Leading discount retailer B&M has opened its 100th garden centre in Salisbury and has plans to open a further 10 centres before the end of the year.

B&M is one of the fastest growing retailers in the UK, with more than 500 stores across the UK selling a variety of products, everything from food and drink to toys; homewares and even a large DIY range.

Last year alone B&M claimed it sold enough artificial turf to cover more than nine football pitches, enough fence panels to cross the channel five times and more than five million plants.

The retailer opened its first garden centre in 2011 as part of its Leek store on Barnfields Road and has rapidly increased the portfolio to 100 in just five years.

The new Salisbury store, located on the Southampton Road Retail Park, has created more than 80 jobs for local people.

Simon Arora, Chief Operating Executive, said: “We are delighted to reach this milestone at our Garden Centre division, which now has the critical mass to be an important player in the sector."

Wyevale Garden Centres join forces with radio presenter

Wyevale Garden Centres have partnered with Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley to produce their top tips for creating a musical garden. Gardening is one of Jo’s real passions so it was a pleasant task putting together a guide on how to encourage British wildlife into your garden and create the sounds of summer.

With British summertime in full swing and the hibernation period nothing but a distant memory for many animals, now is the time to take to your garden and listen to the sounds of summer.

From birdsong and buzzing bees to the rustling of tall grasses, if you close your eyes, there's plenty to hear in the garden and with a bit of clever planting you can create your very own percussion section.

Wyevale Garden Centres and Radio and TV presenter, Jo Whiley, have put together some quick tips which will turn an ordinary garden into a welcoming habitat for the wonders of nature and the sounds they bring with them.

Jo says: “Music and gardening are my two big passions. In the evenings I'm on air between 8 and 10 playing music to the nation as it winds down at the end of the day but during the afternoons, at home, I'm straight out into my garden to enjoy it's many delights and get on with the various jobs there are always to do.

"When I’m gardening, I consciously switch off the radio and completely immerse myself in the sounds of the garden. Sound can have such a huge effect on people’s emotions. In the same way that someone may blast out a feel good tune to lift their mood, the tranquil sounds of a garden can make you completely relaxed.

"Sound plays a big part of my life and my garden can provide a completely different musical backdrop compared to the studio.”

If you want to create a buzz with bug life, think all things bright and beautiful. When choosing flowers, mix up herbaceous perennials, annuals and biennials. They all flower at different times – herbaceous perennials such as lavender, geranium and salvia come back year after year; annuals like daisies and begonias flower once a year, usually in spring and summer; and biennials like hollyhocks and foxgloves, every two years. Planting these will create a constant source of nectar for bees, butterflies and other insects all year round.

If you have the extra space, then a herb patch is always a great addition. Bumble bees and solitary bees are attracted to rosemary in particular, whilst other herb garden favourites like lavender, sage, oregano and thyme all attract bees, butterflies and a host of other insects. If you leave some of your herbs to flower you’ll also be providing a rich food source for these little critters, leaving your garden buzzing with life and the hum of activity on warm days.

If you’ve got room for trellis, try some trailing plants like clematis or sweet peas. Hanging baskets are another great choice – the african daisy, fuschsia or busy lizzie are great for this and bees love them. Vegetables grow well in window boxes and, if you want to see a cabbage butterfly up close, go for broccoli, cabbage or flowering kale.

Tune into the birdsong

Any avid gardener will understand the beauty of birdsong. The important thing to bear in mind is that birds need four things – something to eat/drink, somewhere to shelter, somewhere to wash and somewhere to breed. So grass, trees, shrubs and water are essential.

Hedges, bushes and shrubs are perfect hiding and perching places for birds and provide food like berries, fruit and insects for them to eat. Thoughtfully placed bird boxes make crucial spots for nesting. Birds of all kinds are reliant on trees for food and shelter, and hanging a few bird feeders from the more sturdy branches creates additional resting places. Additionally, bird baths provide a watering hole and bathing point for smaller birds. Your lawn also has lots of different seeds that birds like, such as meadow grass, buttercup and dandelion.

Having a splash

Garden ponds create ideal breeding conditions for frogs, newts, and toads; and they attract all sorts of fascinating insects like the skater, water boatman and dragonflies. Whilst you can enjoy the gentle croak of the amphibians, you can also listen to birds, insects and other animals, like headgehogs, having a splash as they flock to it for a drink, a feast or to freshen up.

The morning hush

Whether you’re an early riser or want to create a peaceful haven to relax in after a busy day, the rustling of leaves can send you into complete tranquillity. Swish, tall grasses like miscanthus and greater quaking grass make a lovely rustling sound, even in gentle breezes; as do fine-leaved trees like birch and robinia, although these trees must be watered everyday if planted during the summer season. clunk-bamboo makes a lovely hollow knocking sound when it bumps together and bigger canes can be turned into wind chimes.

All creatures great and SMALL

If you’re starting from scratch, beds and borders with wavy edges can look much more attractive and informal. Plant your larger shrubs and fruit trees towards the back of borders and then lower-growing shrubs such as lavender at the front. Use the spaces in between for different types of flowers. This will create a varied habitat, full of light, shade and hiding places for birds and smaller mammals like mice and voles. You could also add in an insect hotel or butterfly feeder; nestle these in amongst the foliage to supply shelter and food for the smaller insects.

Planting climbers against fences, on a trellis or against the side of a shed, will create a tangle of branches – great for insects and secretive birds like the wren. honeysuckle or ivy trailing over a fence also acts as a ‘ladder’ that lets small mammals and insects travel between one garden and another.

Top 10 items for a musical garden:

  • Lavendar, from £4.99
  • Honeysuckle, £9.99
  • Salvia, £3.99 - £9.99
  • Daisies, £8.99 - £9.99
  • Foxgloves, from £3.99

Just a year after opening, Tong Garden Centre has extended its award-winning children's play area.

The adventure playground Grass Hoppers welcomed over 22,000 children over the course of the summer holidays last year and Tong's owners are hoping that the investment in the extension will see this double in 2016.

Co-owner, Mark Farnsworth said: "We have extended the Grass Hoppers play area by 50% to accommodate a second jumping pillow, an extended beach play and seating area and a hot food servery. Early feedback has been very encouraging and we look forward to welcoming many more children and their families to Tong this summer."

An additional highlight at Grass Hoppers throughout the summer holidays is donkey rides on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10.30am to 4pm. The rides cost £2.50 and 10% is being donated to Tong's charity of the year, The Cellar Trust, which helps people recovering from mental health problems to get back into work.

The team at Tong has also introduced a bespoke pre-school play area and children's parties in response to customer demand.

Grass Hoppers was awarded Best Place for Children and Young People in Leeds' category in the Child Friendly Leeds (CFL) Awards that took place earlier this year.

Tong Garden Centre is one of Yorkshire's biggest garden centres with 110,000 square feet of retail space and parking for up to 1,000 cars.
Carol Klein opens winter border in memory of Geoff Hamilton

A  'winter border' planted in memory of the late Geoff Hamilton was opened by celebrity gardener Carol Klein this week at the Rutland gardens he created for BBC2's 'Gardener's World' programme over 14 years...

The border, planted up to mark the 20th anniversary of his untimely death, was populated with plants donated by many of Geoff's friends and colleagues on the re-worked site of his original winter garden. Geoff always felt that a garden should be enjoyed all year round, so the winter garden set out to show off plants that could provide interest through the darker months.

Geoff Hamilton’s New Gardeners Foundation bursery student Matthew Narciso helped to lay out and plant the border. The foundation, chaired by Geoffs widow Lynda, was created thanks to a donation from programme makers Catalyst TV and is funded through the sales of videos of Geoff's Barnsdale projects.

Barnsdale Gardens and its adjoining nursery is run by Geoff's son Nick and is a significant tourist attraction in the region. The winter border opening attracted a huge crowd.

Mr Fothergill's Seeds has pledged its support for  Greenfingers by naming a new sweet after the charity for the 2017 season...

Sweet Pea 'Greenfingers' is a traditional grandiflora type with strongly-scented blooms of rich cream with a pale violet picotee.

Mr Fothergill's joint MD David Carey said 25p from the sale of each £2.45p  packet would be donated to Greenfingers. "We hope we can raise the charity's profile with our customers, Britain's gardeners and the garden trade," he said.

The official naming was performed by the charity's head of fundraising, Linda Petrons, at the seedsman's annual press day on Wednesday.

In another ceremiony, Chelsea Pensioners were on hand to name a blend of sweet peas in red shades aimed at raising funds for the Royal Hospital Chelsea. 'Scarlet Tunic' was the name  chosen in a ballot of the hospital's residents and a public vote online by Mr Fothergill's customers.

The Daily Record is reporting that a safe containing a four-figure sum was stolen from Castle Douglas Garden Centre in Dumfries & Galloway last weekend.

A spokesman for the garden centre is reported as saying: “They kicked the front door down to get in. I was surprised the robbers were able to move the safe but there isn’t really too much else I can say. We were back up and running by Sunday afternoon.”

Police are carrying out door-to-door enquiries nearby and CCTV footage is being reviewed from the surrounding streets and are keen tohear from anyone who saw or heard anything.

Cyclamen topple Pelargoniums as bestselling plant

For the first time since April, when we started our GTN Bestsellers Plants Chart, Pelargomiums are not the No 1 bestselling plant genus in garden centres.

That accolade has passed on to Cyclamen as mini Cyclamen for autumn bedding sell through in high volumes straight away.

Cyclamen outsold Pelargoniums by 70% and moved up 19 places as sales of the spring and summer bestseller started to wain and customers move their buying and planting to instant autumn colour.

Jonathan Burden of JB Plants told GTN Bestsellers: “I’m amazed they are selling so well already, but gardeners must be looking for new things to plant and keep colour and interest going beyond the summer.”

Elsewhere in the GTN Plants chart impressive sales increases for Imperata, Miscanthus, Asters and Anenome see them enter the Top 50.

Happiness is a garden shed, says survey

The humble garden shed may hold the key to contentment. 96% of shed owners say their shed makes them happy, according to the Waltons Great British Shed Survey.

For ‘sheddies’ (people who love their sheds), the shed is much more than a place to store gardening tools - it’s the ultimate retreat. Over 48% of people surveyed say they love sheds so much they’d happily spend a country break staying in one, and 19% say they would even live in their shed.

Indeed, shed owners eagerly anticipate the time they spend in their sheds: 28% say it’s better than going to the pub, 49% say it’s better than doing almost anything in the house, and 6% prefer ‘shed time’ to sex.

SECRET SHEDS
Be it a ‘she shed’ or ‘man cave’, the garden shed is a haven for many. 35% use their shed as a hideaway, with 12% seeking time away from partners and others using it as a secret hidey hole for chocolate, cigarettes, alcohol and even love letters from exes.

ALL SHED CONS
Far from the damp draughty stereotype, the modern garden shed often has all the mod cons. Most sheddies surveyed have electricity in their shed, 28% have heating, and 28% have WiFi.

SANCTUARY
39% of sheddies go to their shed to relax with 18% playing music and 10% meditating. Other sheddies retreat to their garden hideaway for dinner, to watch a film, read, write, sleep and even to enjoy a sauna.

“My shed is my sanctuary and my sanity”, one respondent says. Another comments: “My shed is my kingdom; a place where I can do what I want.”

MORE INFORMATION
The Waltons Great British Shed Survey was completed by 1,602 shed owners across the UK from 20 July 2016. Waltons Garden Buildings has been making and delivering garden buildings and fence panels throughout the UK since 1878.

Gardening charity Thrive has received a brand new shed. It’s not any old shed though, it is a Posh Shed.

The charity has received a Ludlow shed from The Posh Shed Company, which measures a compact 4ft by 3ft and features a gothic style window. It is currently being used for storage but Thrive will soon move it to use as a sales kiosk at its open days. The shed was donated to the charity by one of its supporters.

Thrive is the leading charity in the UK using gardening to change the lives of disabled people. The charity uses gardening to bring about positive changes in the lives of people living with disabilities or ill health, or who are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable. They achieve this by running gardening programmes for people through its centres in Berkshire, London, Birmingham and Gateshead.

The Posh Shed Company designs and hand-builds beautiful, wooden sheds using only the highest quality products.  With standard designs and a bespoke, made-to-order service, all available in a range of colours, a Posh Shed Company shed complements any style of garden. The Posh Shed Company does not just make sheds, they also produce storage solutions, outdoor cupboards, bird boxes, garden planters, and even a smokehouse!

Richard Frost, CEO of the Posh Shed Company, said: “We do all we can at The Posh Shed Company to promote the benefits of getting out in the garden so are delighted that one of our sheds has been donated to Thrive. It is a fantastic charity doing some great work.”

The Ludlow Posh Shed will be on display at Thrive’s open days will take place at its Beech Hill garden in Berkshire on Thursday 18th August and Friday 16th September.

Cotswold Fayre highlights the importance of stocking premium snacking products

As the nation continues its love affair with snacking, fine food distributor, Cotswold Fayre, highlights the importance of stocking an array of premium snacking products.

Paul Hargreaves, chief executive of Cotswold Fayre says: “We are becoming a nation of around the clock grazers. In fact, recent research* has suggested that almost 60% of UK consumers are skipping meals in favour of snacking throughout the day.”

According to the research, the most likely culprits are young women, with almost 30% saying that they swap traditional meals for snacks.

“The speciality snacking market has benefited hugely from this growing consumer trend. Consumers are on the hunt for more nutritious and premium snacks to replace the nutrients lost from a main meal. This provides a fantastic opportunity for growth for speciality food retailers.”

The fine food distributor is seeking to help retailers identify the latest snacking products with the launch of its July catalogue.

Paul adds: “We are constantly reviewing our catalogue offering, keeping the brands that we know are performing well, and selecting new products that, based on consumer trends, we believe will prove popular.

“We’ve added some very strong snacking products to this catalogue including the english fruit bars from Perry Court Farm, fruit and oat snack bars from Artisan snacks, Mr Filbert’s snack packs of olives and the range of 100% bottle fruit from Froosh.”

The catalogue also features new products from much loved brands The Foraging Fox, Scarlett & Mustard, Belgian Boys and will see the introduction of new brands, Wiltshire Chilli Farm, Lemonaid and Chari-Tea and Phrooti.

The latest Cotswold Fayre catalogue is available to order on 03452-606060 or to download from www.cotswold-fayre.co.uk.
