SproutWorld, the company that produces plantable pencils, saw a 25% rise in queries from UK event organisers last year.

CEO Michael Stausholm says that this is thanks to a renewed passion for events and a focus on sustainability: “92% of exhibitors plan to be more sustainable when exhibiting at trade shows, according to research by Display Wizard, and with 76.3% of delegates having a more favourable attitude toward brands that give gifts, consideration needs be given to the right kind of gift - this is where we come in,” says Stausholm.

Millions of plastic pens are produced every day and it takes thousands of years for a plastic pen to decompose - SproutWorld pencils offer a plastic-free alternative that gives back to the planet when used up. Each SproutWorld pencil contains seeds in the tip, so that the user can plant them after use and watch them grow. The pencils can be engraved and their packaging branded, making them the perfect gift for events or exhibitors looking to communicate their eco-credentials in a fun and useful way.

SproutWorld makes 175,000 plantable pencils out of one tree from sustainable forests. Each one of these 175,000 pencils can then go on to grow into 175,000 new herbs, vegetables, flowers or trees.

“We have been delighted to see such a rise in the demand from event companies and exhibitors searching for gifts that reflect their values - in the UK as well as across Europe,” says Stausholm. “The Sprout pencils have received very positive feedback. Delegates remember to take them home and sometimes even send pictures of the sprouting pencils back to us, which is just fantastic.”

In celebration of Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday on Friday (8 May), the Chief Executive of the Horticultural Trades Association has paid tribute to his life and work.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA, said: “There is no greater champion or advocate for nature, biodiversity and the importance of green spaces than Sir David Attenborough. His latest series, Secret Garden, highlights the nature and environmental benefits that happen right on our doorsteps – in our gardens.

“Green spaces need these champions to speak out for them, as they are increasingly under threat or taken for granted. As Sir David said, domestic gardens are ‘magical places’ that can be almost as diverse as a tropical rainforest.

“I know I speak for all our members – garden centres, growers, landscapers, garden designers and manufacturers – in giving huge appreciation for Sir David’s recent work, which underlines the role our gardens play in nature recovery and biodiversity alongside his lifelong aims of encouraging us all to safeguard and appreciate delicate and vital flora and fauna at home and abroad.

“When it comes to enjoying our green spaces, it’s worth remembering his words… Across the British Isles, there are magical places: our pride and joy, our gardens.

“Happy Birthday, Sir David Attenborough, and thank you.”

DCUK, The Original Wooden Duck Company, is celebrating after being honoured with a prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise 2026 in the category of International Trade.

The King’s Awards for Enterprise are among the most respected business honours in the UK, recognising outstanding achievement in areas including international trade, innovation and sustainable development. Award winners are entitled to hold the honour for five years in recognition of their achievement.

Founded in Devon over 20 years ago, DCUK has become known for its hand-carved and hand-painted wooden characters, now collected and gifted by customers around the world. What began with a few ducks and a simple mission to help people smile has grown into an internationally recognised gifting brand working with retailers, collectors and partners across the UK, North America, Europe and beyond.

Craig Wensley, DCUK owner, said: “To receive a King’s Award for Enterprise is an incredibly proud moment for our whole team. DCUK has always been built around craftsmanship, character and creating products that make people smile, so to see an independent British gifting brand recognised in this way feels very special indeed. We’re hugely grateful to our team, our craftspeople, our stockists and our collectors around the world who have supported us over the years. This award belongs to all of them too.”

Steve Manser, Head of Marketing at DCUK, added: “The application process is incredibly detailed and rigorous, requiring brands to demonstrate excellence across several areas including growth, strategy, international development and wider business impact, so this recognition means a huge amount to us.

"Over the last few years, we’ve enjoyed seeing new retailers and customers around the world discovering the characters and the stories behind them. There’s a real sense of excitement across the DCUK brand right now, and we’re already working on ways to properly celebrate and commemorate this important award over the coming weeks and months. Watch this space.”

The Scottish horticultural developer and manufacturer behind the innovative Air-Pot system has been recognised with a prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise – honouring its sustained success in international trade.

The Edinburgh-based Caledonian Tree Company, makers of the patented Air-Pot plant growing system, has exported to 40+ countries worldwide during the last 36 years with just a small team.

Jamie Single, co-founder, says: “We’re small but mighty! Selected from hundreds of UK businesses considered for this honour, the award recognises our team’s commitment to innovation and our long-term success in developing an international market for our horticultural growing systems. It is a huge badge of honour that we will all carry with pride.”

Founded in 1990 by Jamie and Suzie Single, The Caledonian Tree Company employs eight staff in Scotland in its offices and manufacturing facility and works with four international representatives supporting growers across global markets.

Suzie adds: “All those years ago, we were simply on a mission to build a better plant pot – little did we foresee the highs, heartaches and hurdles that lay ahead.

“But as plantsmen say, ‘from little things, big things grow’ and we’re incredibly proud Air-Pot® has survived and thrived, and that today our team is being recognised through The King’s Awards.”

The firm’s innovative Air-Pot container system is manufactured from recycled HDPE and is designed to enhance root structure, improve plant health and support more sustainable growing practices worldwide.

Used by commercial growers, nurseries, botanical gardens, research institutions and home growers globally, the system is proven to deliver significantly increased growth and long-term plant performance.

Now in its seventh iteration, with the Air-Pot 7 range, its technology continues to evolve, with the company expanding both its product range and international reach. The founders’ daughter, Georgie Single, is the second generation to be involved in the business too.

Approved by His Majesty The King, this significant award places the Scottish company among the UK’s most respected exporters and grants use of the King’s Award Emblem until 2031.

The King’s Award for Enterprise is the UK’s most prestigious business honour. It highlights outstanding achievement in international trade. Organisations have received Royal recognition through the initiative, initially as the Queen’s Award, since it was first conceived in 1965.

It’s a globally respected mark of excellence and is widely recognised for helping companies develop further and build on their successes, while strengthening their brand.

As a 2026 recipient, Air-Pot is entitled to use the official King’s Awards for Enterprise Emblem on its products and communications for five years from the announcement date, today, helping share its success and inspiring others.

The award will formally be presented to the company at a later date by His Majesty’s Lord‑Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh.

Georgie will also attend a Royal Reception at St James’s Palace in July, celebrating the achievements of 2026 recipients.

The Classroom Garden, one of the most exciting and thought-provoking features at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, has announced FeatherSnap as an official sponsor for 2026.

Created by leading children’s gardening educator, Lee Connelly, and designer, Leigh Johnstone, The Classroom Garden places children’s voices at the heart of one of the

world’s most prestigious horticultural events. The garden brings together education, creativity and nature, offering a powerful vision for how gardening can shape the future of learning.

At the core of the garden is a simple but vital message: Children must be connected to nature, and their voices must be heard. Through recorded audio, interactive elements and a unique classroom-meets-garden design, visitors will experience first-hand how children view gardening, wildlife and their role in caring for the planet.

The partnership with FeatherSnap strengthens this message by placing wildlife at the centre of the educational experience. Known for their innovative solar powered, wi-fi enabled smart bird feeders, FeatherSnap captures photos and videos of every feathered visitor in real time, making it easier than ever for families to discover, identify, and learn about garden birds.  FeatherSnap’sinvolvement will help bring the unseen world of garden wildlife directly into the story of the garden.

This collaboration highlights the importance of wildlife in education. By giving children the opportunity to observe and connect with nature up close, tools like FeatherSnap, that blend smart technology with the joy of nature, inspire curiosity, responsibility and a deeper understanding of ecosystems.

Lee Connelly, The Children’s Gardening Coach, said: “This garden is all about giving children a voice at the biggest gardening stage in the world. Wildlife is a huge part of that story. When children can see and experience nature up close, it changes everything. FeatherSnap’s support allows us to bring that connection to life and show just how powerful it can be in education.”

FeatherSnap’s sponsorship also represents a shared commitment to inspiring the next

generation. By supporting The Classroom Garden, they are helping to amplify children’s perspectives, champion outdoor learning and demonstrate how technology and nature can work together to engage young minds.

Cary Kessenich, Director of Brand Management, FeatherSnap, said: “We are thrilled to be supporting Lee and Leigh, and it’s wonderful to have our smart bird feeder, FeatherSnap, in their Classroom Garden at such an iconic event in the UK. FeatherSnapis all about making bird watching and wildlife observation accessible and engaging for everyone and is a fun activity that the whole family can enjoy together. FeatherSnap is a tool that connects nature, schools and science. So, whether it’s at home or in the classroom, FeatherSnap’sunique smart features, designed to engage and inspire curiosity, will help to encourage children to learn more about birdlife and the natural world around them. We can’t wait to see the birds that come to visit The Classroom Garden at Chelsea.”

Visitors to the garden will be able to see how wildlife, education and creativity come together in one immersive space, and how partnerships like this can help shape a more nature-connected future for children. The Classroom Garden will be on display throughout RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026,inviting visitors, educators and industry leaders to reflect on the role of gardening in education and the importance of listening to the next generation.

Plants Shortlisted for ‘The RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year Award’.

Prunus ‘Sumaura Fugenzo’ JAPANESE LANTERN™ was first discovered in Japan in 1990, this extraordinary tree has finally been brought to market by Frank P. Matthews Trees.

Prunus ‘Sumaura Fugenzo’ JAPANESE LANTERN™ is truly eye-catching, thanks to its unique, multi-tonal blossom display. Its beautifully full, lantern-shaped flowers—each with up to 30 petals—open in soft green and creamy white, gently blush, and then deepen to a rich pink as they mature, creating a long-lasting and ever-changing show.

This tree brings interest beyond spring too. Young bronze foliage matures to fresh green, followed by vibrant autumn colour, while the lightly fragrant blooms add extra appeal. Reliable and easy to grow, it performs well in most UK conditions and adapts happily to a wide range of soils—making it a wonderful choice for gardens of all sizes.

Following remarkable success at the HTA National Plant Show — where it secured three awards, including a prestigious Gold Medal and the People’s Choice Award — it has now been shortlisted for ‘The RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year Award’.

Visitors to the Show will be able to admire this stunning Prunus on exclusive display within the Blue Diamond Garden Centres’ garden exbibit in the Great Pavilion and this is available to buy in all Blue Diamond Garden Centres.

Hydrangea Velvet Night® ‘Red Lace’

Thriving in moist, well-drained soil in partial shade, it offers season-long visual impact, with dramatic foliage providing interest beyond flowering, making it perfect for planting in borders or containers.

Both eye-catching and versatile, this innovation sets a new benchmark for ornamental hydrangeas.

This Hydrangea has also been short-listed for ‘The RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year Award’ and will also be showcased exclusively in Blue Diamond Garden Centres’ garden exhibit.

Key Themes within the Exhibit

Visitors can also expect to see an inspiring yet practical garden exhibit that brings together achievable gardening ideas and innovative design with all the plants in the garden having been grown on Blue Diamond’s UK nurseries, the majority of which are available to buy in Blue Diamond Garden Centres.

Exploring key themes such as drought-tolerant planting, growing food in small spaces, and sustainable gardening practices, the space will unfold across a series of thoughtfully curated zones including ‘Thrive Not Just Survive’ drought-tolerant planting in the Dry Garden, leading into a glass Plant House showcasing green walls of Tropical Houseplants, then into the Exotic Shade-Loving plants, Vertical Edible Walls, and the Tapestry Garden, a contemporary take on a Cottage Garden style of planting.

Enhancing the sense of theatre and drama, a striking water feature will serve as a showstopping centrepiece, delivering a truly immersive and memorable sensory experience.

Plants that thrive, not just survive, in the Dry Garden

The garden exhibit will open with bold, drought-tolerant planting, demonstrating resilient beauty for a changing climate. Drifts of Salvia, Agapanthus and Thyme are paired with striking architectural plants such Astelia and Cordyline, anchored by a dramatic 40-year-old Yucca rostrata.

An immersive horticultural journey

Visitors will then be drawn into a walk-through experience that transitions seamlessly from dry planting to a lush glass Plant House environment. Here, hanging plants, bold foliage and a tropical green wall, rich with ferns, Selaginella, Calathea and orchids-create a fully enveloping sensory experience.

The Exotic Shade Garden

The path will continue into a shaded, jungle-inspired landscape of tree ferns and acers, underplanted with grasses, shrubs and ferns. A rock water feature will add sound, movement and theatre, heightening the sense of escape.

Real solutions for real gardens

Planting will then evolve into dappled shade scheme, one of the most common gardening challenges. Japanese maples and flowering dogwoods (Cornus kousa and Cornus florida) will take centre-stage, supported by a refined palette of whites, burgundies and soft blues.

Small-space and edible inspiration

Visitors will then enter a walled garden through scented arches of Trachelospermum, where they will discover a contemporary vertical edible wall. Herbs, salads and strawberries grown on living walls, proving that productive gardening is possible even in compact spaces.

Celebrating classics and new favourites in the Tapestry Garden

From Chelsea to the customer

The experience will conclude with views of a rose-clad walled garden, leaving visitors inspired and confident that this extraordinary range of plants is accessible at a Blue Diamond Garden Centre near them.

Following a Bronze medal in 2024 and a Silver Gilt in 2025, the College is aiming high for further success in 2026.

This year’s exhibit, titled The Magic Number, will explore the how the Fibonacci sequence, a numerical pattern, appears throughout the natural world, from flower petals and seed arrangements to branching trees and spirals on shells. It will be located within the Grand Pavilion, adjacent to this year’s main Show Gardens.

The 7m x 5m garden has been in development since December, with construction underway at the College since January. Built in modular sections, it will be transported to London and assembled on site ahead of the show. The final design will feature approximately 4,000 plants, including many grown by Hadlow students, showcasing a diverse and carefully curated planting scheme.

Ian Fleming, Head Gardener at Hadlow College said: “This year’s garden demonstrates how maths is embedded in nature. The Fibonacci sequence can be seen throughout the garden’s design and planting, reflecting the patterns we find all around us.”

Student involvement remains at the heart of the project, with learners across all levels contributing to the design, build and presentation of the garden, even being on the stand at the Chelsea Flower Show to talk to visitors about their garden.

“It’s an incredible opportunity,” said Alan Harvey, Head of Curriculum for Horticulture and Floristry said, “Students gain hands-on experience, develop practical and teamwork skills, and engage with the public at one of the most prestigious events in the world.”

Hadlow College courses cover a wide range of Horticultural subjects including Garden Design, Gardening Horticulture, Food Science & Genetic Engineering, Amenity Horticulture, Fresh Food Produce and more.

</nw:synopsis>
<nw:body>
The Horticultural Trades Association is recruiting three new Non-Executive Directors to its Board. The roles offer HTA members the opportunity to help shape the strategy and direction of the trade body representing UK environmental horticulture.

The roles come at a time of growing importance for the sector, with gardens, green spaces and managed landscapes playing an increasingly vital role in the UK’s economy, environment and wellbeing. The HTA is seeking individuals who can bring strategic judgement, sector insight and constructive challenge to its Board.

In line with governance requirements, applications are open only to candidates employed by organisations with active HTA membership. Successful candidates must maintain that membership for the duration of their term.

Will Armitage, HTA President, said: “This is an opportunity for people from across our membership to step into a leadership role and help shape the future of our industry. We’re looking for individuals who can think strategically, bring fresh perspectives and provide both support and challenge as we continue to evolve and deliver for our members.”

Non-Executive Directors play a key role in overseeing governance and helping shape the HTA’s long-term direction. Working alongside the executive team, they will contribute an independent perspective to Board discussions, help ensure the organisation remains focused on delivering value to members, and act as ambassadors for the sector.

The roles are voluntary (with expenses reimbursed), and appointments are for a three-year term, with the potential for renewal. Directors are expected to attend four Board meetings and one AGM each year, and to participate in occasional strategy sessions or committee work.

The HTA is particularly interested in candidates who bring Board-level or senior leadership experience, alongside expertise in areas such as commercial horticulture, garden retail, landscaping, finance, technology, governance or membership organisations. However, the Association encourages applications from across its membership, valuing passion, integrity and real-world experience as highly as formal qualifications.

Candidates should be able to think strategically, ask the right questions, and contribute to robust decision-making while bringing a collaborative, forward-looking approach. A strong interest in member representation, sustainability and sector growth will be essential.

In return, Non-Executive Directors will gain Board-level experience, access to formal Non-Executive Director training by an accredited body, build networks across the industry, and contribute to a sector in which they are passionate. The recruitment forms part of the HTA’s ongoing succession planning, both to fill upcoming vacancies and to build a strong and diverse pipeline of future Board talent.

The HTA represents around 1,400 businesses comprising retailers, growers, manufacturers, wholesalers, landscapers and garden designers. Its work includes political advocacy, market insight and commercial initiatives such as the National Garden Gift Scheme, which drives around 2 million visits to garden centres each year.

To apply, candidates should send a CV and covering letter to recruitment@hta.org.uk by 5pm on Friday, 29 May 2026. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with interviews expected to take place in early June.

Full details, including the recruitment brochure and role description, are available via the HTA Careers page.

The prestigious Garden Media Guild Awards – affectionately known as the gardening ‘Oscars’ – will return on 20th November 2026, with The Savoy once again providing a spectacular backdrop for an evening celebrating the very best in garden media.

Recognising excellence across writing, authorship, magazines, photography, podcasting, videography, broadcasting, and social media, the awards bring together the most influential voices shaping the horticultural conversation today.

As plans for the 2026 event gather pace, the Garden Media Guild has unveiled an expanded sponsorship offering, introducing a broader range of opportunities – including more accessible, smaller sponsorship packages – designed to open the door to brands of all sizes looking to connect with this highly engaged audience.

Sponsoring the GMG Awards provides unparalleled exposure to a targeted audience of industry leaders, media professionals, and passionate gardening enthusiasts. It is a unique opportunity to align your brand with excellence in garden media, while building meaningful, long-term relationships with those who influence consumer behaviour and shape industry trends.

New for 2026 is the introduction of exclusive goody bag partnerships, with the Guild now seeking both bag sponsors and product partners. A total of 100 premium goody bags will be produced for winners and shortlisted entrants, offering brands a standout opportunity to place their products directly into the hands of key journalists, broadcasters, content creators and influencers. With many attendees going on to feature and review products post-event, this initiative provides exceptional potential for extended media coverage and editorial exposure.

Alongside this, there are a host of additional creative sponsorship opportunities available – from floral installations and table centres through to champagne and drinks receptions – allowing brands to play a visible and memorable role in shaping the look, feel and experience of the evening.

This year’s sponsorship packages are designed to suit a variety of budgets and objectives. From headline and category sponsorships through to these more flexible and experiential entry points, all partners benefit from brand visibility at the event, inclusion in promotional materials, and opportunities to engage directly with attendees. Sponsors also receive tickets to the event, providing invaluable face-to-face networking with some of the most respected names in garden media.

Speaking about this year’s opportunities, Garden Media Guild Co-Chair Kimberley Hornby George, owner of the garden specialist PR agency Hornby George PR, said: “Sponsoring the Garden Media Guild Awards is an exceptional way to raise brand awareness and build genuine relationships with the writers, photographers and influencers who speak directly to your audience.

“By supporting the garden media through awards sponsorship, you’re demonstrating a commitment to collaboration and industry progression. Time and again, sponsors tell us the connections made on the night lead to meaningful, long-term opportunities – relationships that would otherwise take months, even years, to develop. With the addition of our new goody bag partnerships and more accessible sponsorship options, there really is something for every brand to get involved with in 2026.”

Britain’s green-fingered growers, this is your moment - entries are now open for GARDENA Top of the Plots 2026, a nationwide gardening competition celebrating the very best of Britain’s thriving grow-your-own community.

Back for a second year following a successful debut that attracted hundreds of entrants, the initiative shines a spotlight on the creativity, resilience and dedication of the UK’s plot-proud growers while inspiring more people to grow their own food.

The competition invites gardeners of all abilities - from seasoned allotment holders to first-time growers, schools and community groups - to showcase their plots, whether that’s a productive allotment, a flourishing garden bed or a shared growing space.

The competition was kicked off by head judge and grow-your-own expert Huw Richards, in partnership with leading watering and tools brand GARDENA, at Shoreditch Treehouse in London. The event brought together last year’s winners, gardening enthusiasts, influencers and media to launch this year’s search.

With the price of fresh produce continuing to rise, initiatives like Top of the Plots are encouraging Brits to take food growing into their own hands - offering not just cost savings, but powerful benefits for wellbeing, time outdoors and connection to nature.

Huw Richards, head judge and GARDENA ambassador, said: “Growing your own food has never been more important - or more rewarding. Whether it’s saving money, improving your wellbeing, or simply enjoying time outdoors, anyone can get started. “Top of the Plots is all about celebrating that journey, no matter how big or small your space.”

The competition is open to gardeners of all experience levels, and features seven categories: Best Allotment, Best Garden Plot, Best New Plot, Kids on the Plot, Best Small Plot, Huw’s Pick of the Plots and Best Community Plot. From these, one standout grower will be crowned Plot of the Year, winning £1,000 worth of GARDENA products, gardening vouchers and a champion’s plaque. The first 100 entrants will also receive exclusive Top of the Plots merchandise.

Supported by the National Allotment Society, which will crown the Best Allotment, the campaign celebrates the passion and ingenuity of growers across the country.

Mike Farrell, Chairman of the National Allotment Society, added: “We’re proud to support Top of the Plots once again. Allotments and community growing spaces play a vital role in bringing people together, supporting sustainable living and improving health and wellbeing across the UK. This competition is a brilliant way to recognise the incredible work happening nationwide.”

For entrants, it’s more than a chance for recognition - it’s an invitation into a thriving gardening community.

Huw’s Pick of the Plots winner, Richard Bowman, has revealed he has since created his own arch after seeing Steve Mills' mesmerising fruit and flower tunnel, which was awarded Plot of the Year.

Richard, who transformed a field of weeds into a unique allotment, said: “I was inspired by other growers - especially Steve’s fruit tree displays - which pushed me to get even more creative and build my own arch. It’s amazing how much you can achieve with a bit of inspiration, and I’d encourage anyone to pick up the trowel and enter this year.”

Meanwhile, Victoria Holden won Best Community Plot on behalf of Northern Lily’s Community Orchard & Garden, which turned derelict land into a ‘hidden gem’ for more than 4,000 people and grew over a tonne of food for 12,750 meals in Failsworth, Greater Manchester. Donna Harris, of Leicestershire, used to think vegetables were “boring” but has found a new love for homegrown food, as she won Best New Plot for her “life-changing” garden, which became her sanctuary.

Wilkinsons Landscapes has strengthened its support for horticultural education with a donation to Middlesbrough’s Askham Bryan College alongside joining the college’s Employer Advisory Board to help ensure students are equipped with industry-ready skills.

The family-run landscaping firm, the largest of its kind in the region, has donated 30 bags of compost for use by horticulture students, as well as a new heater to support practical, hands-on learning across the Middlesbrough campus. The contribution comes as Askham Bryan College calls on more local businesses to play a role in protecting opportunities for young people amid growing skills shortages in horticulture and related sectors.

Simon Wilkinson, Managing Director of Wilkinsons Landscapes and an RHS award-winning designer, has also joined the college’s Employer Advisory Board (EAB), which brings together employers from across horticulture, equine, floristry, animal management and other land-based industries. The board works with the college to shape curriculum content and ensure teaching reflects real-world workforce needs.

A former Askham Bryan College student himself, Simon said the college plays a vital role in helping young people discover career paths they might not otherwise consider. He said: “I know first-hand how valuable Askham Bryan College is to young people who might not otherwise discover a passion for horticulture.

“Employers like us rely on skilled, enthusiastic people coming through, but the college needs ongoing support to make that possible. Donating materials and equipment is a small contribution, but if more local businesses get involved, the impact for students could be huge.

“I want more businesses to get involved. Askham Bryan College is a valuable asset for all North East land-based businesses, and we’re at risk of losing it if we don’t ensure that it has a strong pipeline of students and the input from employers to ensure that they leave ready to join the workforce.”

Askham Bryan College runs specialist land-based provision across the region, including its Middlesbrough campus, and works closely with employers to ensure students leave with the practical skills and experience needed to move directly into employment.

Lisa Proffit, Head of Campus at Askham Bryan College Middlesbrough, said contributions such as Wilkinsons Landscapes’ donation and involvement help make a tangible difference to students’ day-to-day learning.

“Simon brings deep industry knowledge and genuine commitment to nurturing new talent, and we’re pleased to have him on board,” she said. “But we need more organisations to play a part - whether it’s offering insight, placements, materials or equipment, every contribution helps ensure young people don’t miss out on the chance to build a future in these vital sectors.”

Wilkinsons Landscapes employs around 50 people across the region, and the company’s involvement with Askham Bryan College reflects a wider push by the college to secure stronger partnerships with local employers to safeguard the future of land-based education and address long-term skills gaps.

spoga+gafa will thus be addressing a trend from 22 to 24 June 2026 that is increasingly shaping the market: the merging of indulgence, lifestyle and outdoor experiences in everyday life.

Whether in one's own garden, while camping or on spontaneous outings into the country: Grilling and outdoor cooking are closely entwined with the desire for adventure and leisure activities. This opens up new potential for the trade - from interconnected ranges to holistic product presentations for concrete usage scenarios.

"We are delighted to bring the theme worlds BBQ and Outdoor Adventure closer together this year and stage them jointly in an emotionally engaging way. The hall will be filled with strong brands and manifold impulses, offering new perspectives for designing product ranges and sales areas," says Claudia Maurer, Director of spoga+gafa.

Strong brands, interconnected product ranges
The exhibitor structure reflects this development. Among others, the following exhibiting companies will be represented in the BBQ and Outdoor Adventure hall: Blackstone, Bestway, Bull Outdoor, Campingaz/Coleman, Enders Colsman, Gozney, Intex, LISA, Livwise, Millarco International A/S with the brand Cozze, Petromax, Westerhold and Westfield Outdoor. Their products are relevant for both the garden and Outdoor Adventure segments.

A full overview of all participating exhibitors can be found online in the exhibitor search of spoga+gafa 2026: www.spogagafa.com/spoga-gafa-exhibitors/list-of-exhibitors/.

New experience areas for the trade
spoga+gafa 2026 will showcase how the BBQ and Outdoor Adventure sections can be interlinked effectively at the point of sale on a central special zone. This area will provide inspiration for modern retail space concepts and product range design. The focus lies on a converted campervan, which combines products from the BBQ, Outdoor Adventure and the further theme worlds of spoga+gafa - Living and Creation&Care - with each other in a practical scenario. The special zone will be enhanced by a stage where lectures are held and a cosy networking area where visitors can engage in an exchange and business discussions.

Further highlights include the "Pitmaster Stage", where BBQ professionals will demonstrate their skills on all three days of the trade fair, as well as the "Flavour Market", which unites trends and product diversity revolving around BBQ and food themes.

Broad exhibitor base sets positive signal
With the further development of its theme structure, spoga+gafa is underlining its role as an international business platform and driving force for the garden industry. The recently published, positive booking figures in the sections Living and Creation&Care also underscore the strong market response across all theme worlds.

Tickets for spoga+gafa are available via the official ticket shop: www.spogagafa.com/trade-fair/tickets/buy-tickets/.

<nw:body>

The Royal Horticultural Society has announced its endorsement of Tapestry, a new porcelain paving design from Ca’ Pietra, its licensee for outdoor paving.

Placing pattern at the heart of the garden, Tapestry brings a softly timeworn decorative quality to outside areas, with faded motifs and gentle tonal variation that create a sense of depth that feels at ease in the landscape rather than imposed upon it.

It is available in two styles: Arabic and Geometric. The Arabic design carries a more fluid, ornamental feel, while the Geometric version offers something more structured, with a quieter, ordered pattern that sits comfortably within contemporary settings.

Both styles are designed with outdoor living in mind, with a textured porcelain finish that delivers the grip, durability and ease of maintenance expected of modern paving.

This RHS-endorsed line is now available at Ca’ Pietra’s dedicated showrooms in Devizes in Wiltshire, Chelsea in London, and Hartley Wintney in Hampshire, along with a large number of Ca’ Pietra partner retailers across the UK. The RHS endorsement will be highlighted in marketing, brochures, newsletters and PoS material.

Ca’ Pietra is a leading expert in the world of stone, tiles, and hard landscaping, and, since July 2025, has been endorsed by the RHS for natural stone and porcelain tiles suitable for external use.

This endorsement specifically applies to Ca’ Pietra’s comprehensive range of natural stone and porcelain paving, which has been carefully developed to meet the aesthetic requirements of outdoor spaces, from private gardens and courtyards to commercial landscaping projects.

Ca’ Pietra stone and porcelain paving is, of course, also designed to meet the practical demands of the British climate, while offering designers, landscapers and homeowners a wide choice of materials, formats and finishes.

Although Ca' Pietra is a highly appropriate and evocative Italian term meaning ‘house of stone’, this is a proudly British, family-owned company, with a legacy spanning more than 35 years, boasting a team of designers, makers and curators redefining the art of surface design.

The company combines time-honoured techniques with boundless creativity, sourcing the finest materials from around the world to craft collections and bespoke creations that combine timeless elegance with contemporary flair. Its team members also pride themselves on being approachable experts, offering practical advice and creative inspiration to homeowners, designers, and landscapers alike.

Grazzie Wilson, Head of Creative at Ca’ Pietra, says: “Outdoor spaces are no longer treated as separate, purely practical zones, but as a natural continuation of the home, shaped with the same attention to atmosphere, material and detail. In response to this shift, Tapestry places pattern at the heart of the garden, offering a more expressive way to approach outdoor surfaces. We are thrilled to have received the endorsement of the RHS for this collection.”

Cathy Snow, RHS Licensing Manager, adds: “Ca’ Pietra continues to shape a vision of outdoor living that balances beauty with longevity, and practicality with a more expressive design language. Tapestry is a wonderful addition to that vision and one that we are delighted to endorse.”

The Keukenhof season has drawn to a close. This weekend the gates of the international spring flower park in Lisse, the Netherlands closed. Visitors had the opportunity to experience The Field of Gold: JUB Holland’s entry for Keukenhof 2026.

A long-flowering, layered border in which designer and RHS Bulb Expert Carien van Boxtel does not shy away from yellow, but instead gives it a confident leading role.

Inspired by Fields of Gold, the iconic song by Sting, and Wheatfield with Crows by Vincent van Gogh, Van Boxtel created a composition in which golden tones, shadow and seasonal movement come together. The result is a living painting that continually shifts in character throughout the season. At the same time, the border represents more than a temporary showpiece. As it does each year, JUB Holland translates the design into a practical bulb mixture for clients in the landscape and retail sectors. In this way, Keukenhof borders evolve into a collection that later reappears in parks, public green spaces, entrances, business grounds, private gardens and retail displays.

“Yellow is often an undervalued colour in gardens and planting schemes. That’s precisely why I wanted to explore it this year — not as something loud or overpowering, but as a carrier of warmth, light and emotion,” says Carien van Boxtel.

From a soft opening to a dramatic finale
The Field of Gold began this spring with delicate, fresh tones and an unusually early display of botanical tulips, crocuses, irises and daffodils. From the opening of Keukenhof, the JUB Holland border revealed its first flowering layers exactly as intended: building gradually towards a rich, multi-layered finale.

As the season progressed, the palette deepened into richer golds, apricot, peach, aubergine, dark blue and near-black. This transition is carefully orchestrated. Van Boxtel works with successive flowering layers, where species reinforce one another in timing, height, colour and texture. The result is a chameleon-like effect: visitors in March encountered an entirely different composition from those arriving in April or May.

“It’s essentially a kaleidoscope of colour,” Van Boxtel explains. “I work with flowering times, planting densities, height and colour gradients. This year the weather conditions were ideal, but I always build in margins. Visitors from the first to the last day of the season all deserve a strong flowering experience.”

Painting with bulbs
Van Boxtel, who is also a painter, approaches the border as a canvas composition. This is particularly evident in her use of dark accents. In The Field of Gold, both matte and glossy varieties of Fritillaria persica have been used, including the highly polished ‘Purple Dynamite’. “I got many questions about that,” she says. “For me, those differences function like paint. Matte black creates shadow, while glossy dark tones reflect light. Together, they add depth to the gold.”

Standout varieties in the composition include Tulipa ‘Apricot Pride’, which shifts from apricot pink to creamy white, blending a warm golden glow into the yellow, and the botanical Tulipa ‘Lucca’, a small yellow tulip with a dark heart that draws attention along the border edges. The assortment also demonstrates the breadth of the palette: tulips, daffodils, crocuses, fritillarias, irises, camassia and other naturalising bulbs follow one another from early March through to the end of May.

A bold case for yellow
According to Van Boxtel, The Field of Gold is her most daring design for JUB Holland to date. While yellow is popular in spring, it is often used cautiously in professional planting schemes — considered too bright, too harsh or too dominant. For that very reason, Van Boxtel chose not to tone it down, but to refine it. Apricot and peach soften the gold, while deep, dark tones introduce tension and shadow. The effect is warm, rich and layered — painterly rather than simply cheerful. Yellow takes on a new role: not as an accent, but as the foundation that allows other colours to resonate more strongly.

Landscape architect and contractor Ruud Vermeer of Meneer Vermeer Tuinen (NL) responded enthusiastically: “I always thought yellow and pink were an impossible combination. Once again, Carien van Boxtel has surpassed herself at Keukenhof for JUB Holland. Emotion, emotion and more emotion when you stand there.”

Keukenhof as showcase and design laboratory
JUB Holland has been an exhibitor at Keukenhof for many years. Each season, the family business from Noordwijkerhout (NL) not only supplies bulbs to the park, but also presents its own border design. Since 2019, these have been created annually by Carien van Boxtel, each with its own theme, palette and narrative. For JUB Holland, Keukenhof functions as both an international showcase and a design laboratory. Here, colour combinations, flowering times, heights, densities and plant selections are tested and experienced by a global audience.

Around seven million spring-flowering bulbs are planted in the park each year by Keukenhof’s forty gardeners, across 32 hectares. The JUB border itself is planted in three layers by a specialist team. For JUB Holland, this world-renowned show garden is quite literally on its doorstep: Lisse lies just around the corner from Noordwijkerhout, where the company’s nursery and headquarters are based.

From show border to collection
JUB Holland’s Keukenhof designs do not remain confined to the park. Each design forms the basis for a bulb mixture that becomes available the following year for landscape and retail clients. This allows municipalities, designers, contractors, garden centres and consumers to bring a piece of the Keukenhof experience into their own projects or sales environments. Van Boxtel deliberately combines familiar and more unusual varieties. The latter add tension, identity and refinement; the former ensure the mixtures remain practical, available and scalable beyond the Keukenhof context. The result is a collection that is both artistically distinctive and commercially viable.

That translation is already visible in practice. Previous JUB Holland mixtures designed for Keukenhof are now being applied in projects across the Netherlands and beyond. A notable example is the bastion in the city of Alkmaar (NL), where seasonal planting around the Molen van Piet (the iconic windmill of the city) adds colour, seasonal interest and public value to a historic urban setting.

An immersive planting experience
The emotional impact of The Field of Gold aligns with the philosophy of the late British garden designer Nigel Dunnett, an important source of inspiration for Van Boxtel. His planting designs focused not on replicating nature, but on enhancing it — creating dynamic, layered schemes that offer an immersive experience through colour, structure and seasonal change.

“That’s always my aim as well,” Van Boxtel says. “A planting should be something you can step into — somewhere you can lose yourself for a moment.”

Talented teams of garden designers, landscapers and college students have won high praise from BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Adam Frost for their imaginative show gardens at the BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair.

Tens of thousands of visitors are expected at the Spring Fair at Beaulieu in the New Forest this Bank Holiday weekend (1-3 May), looking for inspiration and ideas for every shape, size and type of garden.

A Gold award was presented to Hampshire-based garden designer Vicky Lincoln and Rob Woodhouse from Solent Garden Services for their Showcase Garden, Nature’s Spa. Inspired by the William Wordsworth poem, ‘Lines Written in Spring’, this relaxing wellbeing garden celebrates the arrival of spring with a promise of warmer months and brighter days ahead, inviting us to get back outside to reconnect with nature, to restore and re-energise.

Facing the tough task of assessing the Spring Fair’s show gardens were multi award-winning designers Richard Barnard (Kings Oak Landscapes) and Pip Probert (BBC Your Garden Made Perfect), Garden News magazine editor-at-large, Ian Hodgson, and Phil Tremayne, General Manager of the Association of Professional Landscapers. Floral displays were assessed by expert horticulturalist, Rupert Eley (The Place for Plants, East Bergholt).

Assessment panel Chair, Ian Hodgson, said: “Nature’s Spa is a contemplative, restful retreat that made us yearn for the water. It was underpinned by a masterful and sensitive use of paving, decking and planting.”

Winner Vicky Lincoln (pictured) said: “We’re delighted to win this award and have really enjoyed the process of creating a garden that visitors love. We’re so grateful for the opportunity and the support we’ve had.”

The Spring Fair’s headline sponsor Hillier never fails to bring the wow factor. This year’s spectacular feature is the Neighbourhood of Gardens, an eye-catching quad of distinct but connected gardens that demonstrate how thoughtful design can respond to different ways people live today. Hillier’s Family Garden is a lively, playful space by day that transforms into a relaxed evening retreat. The Potted Garden shows how container planting can deliver colour, personality and style for busy lifestyles, renters or those new to gardening. The nostalgic, wildlife-friendly Cottage Garden is a colourful, scented escape from the pace of modern life, while the Urban Jungle is a lush, leafy, contemporary space to unwind and step away from the digital world. At the Hillier Experience, visitors can buy plants featured in the Neighbourhood of Plants, get expert advice, and enjoy talks by horticultural specialists like David Austin Roses.

The BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair supports future generations of horticultural talent through its annual College Gardens Competition. Student teams from Coastland College, Dorset and Merrist Wood College, Guildford accepted the challenge, inspired by a creative theme of ‘Reimagined Traditions’ and mentored by award-winning garden designer Cherry Carmen. Their brief: to design and build a budget-friendly Showcase Garden packed with creativity, interest and visitor appeal.

Horticulture and landscaping students from Merrist Wood College, Guildford scooped Best College Garden and a Gold award for their garden, Heritage Rewoven, exploring the evolution of horticultural education since the college first welcomed students in 1945.

Chair of assessors, Ian Hodgson, said: “With its creative repurposing and recycling of building materials found around the college and lush, colourful planting, this garden was a winner for the talented young team behind it.”

Richard Cant, Curriculum Manager at Merrist Wood College, said: “This is our fourth BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair and our third Best College Garden. It’s great to build on that tradition with a different team of students each year. From concept and construction through to the assessment panel, they learn so much from the whole process, developing their skills and confidence throughout. It’s a great project for our students to be part of be part, to put on their CV and to start their horticultural careers.”

The Spring Fair’s ever-popular Beautiful Borders competition gives first-time designers, charities and community groups the opportunity to try their hand at designing a smaller-scale show garden, sharing their vision and message with the Fair’s 20,000+ visitors. With a new creative theme each year, the brief is to pack these mini 9m2 plots with imagination. This year’s Beautiful Border theme is ‘Once Upon a Time’, with personal stories and memories at the heart of many of the designs.

Best Beautiful Border and a Platinum award went to New Forest Day Opportunities and Minstead Trust, a Lyndhurst-based charity working with people with learning difficulties and autism. The woodland design was inspired by an original New Forest folk tale, written by people supported by Minstead Trust and which imagines the origins of Furzey Gardens. The Border tells a story of a garden created, lost and renewed through shared care, and will be rebuilt within Furzey Gardens after the Spring Fair.

Chair of assessors, Ian Hodgson, said: “This brilliant Border is pure inventive and imaginative fun, created with great passion and panache. The fairytale of Furzey Gardens was a wonderful way to bring the ‘Once Upon a Time’ theme to life.”

Presented with their award, Minstead Trust gardening instructor Paul Smith said: “We feel emotional accepting this award on behalf of a huge team of people. The people that Minstead Trust supports were fully involved in helping us put this garden together, from concept to construction, woodwork, ceramics, crafts, everything. They will be absolutely elated with this award.”

In the Floral Display award categories, Millais Nursery from Farnham, Surrey won Best Designed Display, and Hampshire Carnivorous Plants from Southampton won Best Quality of Plants. Jurassic Plants from Denbighshire won Best Display of Rare/Unusual Plants, and Best Overall Display went to Beech Tree Farm Plants from North Yorkshire.

Congratulating all entrants on their awards, BBC Gardeners’ World presenter, Adam Frost, said: “I’ve got nothing but respect for anyone that invests their time, vision and hard graft into bringing a show garden to life at a big public event like this. I’ve done it myself and I know the heart and soul that goes into it. It’s an absolute pleasure to meet the wonderful folk that created these gardens, and I know they will inspire so many Spring Fair visitors with their fantastic ideas.”

Lord Montagu of Beaulieu said: “In past years, some of the gardens at the Spring Fair have been so good that I have wanted them to be left as a permanent feature. Sadly, that is not in the nature of these display gardens, but the compensation is the prospect of another great selection in the following year. I am sure that the creations at this year’s show will follow the high standard of previous years and give our visitors plenty to enthuse about.”

The BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair takes place at Beaulieu, Hampshire until Sunday 3 May. Highlights include Showcase Gardens, Beautiful Borders, floral displays and more than thirty specialist plant nurseries. At the BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Stage, presenters Adam Frost (Friday), Frances Tophill (Saturday), Sue Kent and Ashley Edwards (both Sunday) share seasonal gardening tips with the Magazine team, gardening personalities and guests. There are expert-led talks, fun floral and bug hotel workshops, guided garden tours and demonstrations, a design and landscaping clinic from the Association of Professional Landscapers, and informal gardening chat at the In Conversation Stage with host, Ade Sellars.

Visitors can enjoy plant, garden and lifestyle shopping, with a Plant Crèche and Wheelbarrow Porter Service. There are tasting sessions with local producers and broadcaster and writer Andy Clarke at the Spring Table, sponsored by Regent Seven Seas Cruises, delicious food and drink at the Good Food Market, and plenty of ‘grow your own’ inspiration with the Make a Metre Matter Border by BBC Newsround presenter De-Graft Mensah and Lucy Chamberlain, and edible displays by the National Vegetable Society. Family visitors can enjoy vintage games, tractors and Land Rovers in the Spring Fair’s arena, a ride on the Beaulieu Monorail, and the Little Beaulieu adventure play area.

Horticultural businesses are calling on the government to “stop the squeeze on growth” as rising employment taxes, energy bills and input costs push firms into declining profitability despite continued sales.

The Horticultural Trades Association’s latest quarterly Business Barometer shows significantly more businesses are behind their profit targets than ahead, with a net balance of -36% at the end of Q1 2026. This compares with -13% for sales, highlighting a widening gap between trading and profitability and the scale of the margin pressure businesses are now facing. Retailers were particularly affected, with a profit net balance of -46%.

Year-on-year figures further confirm the trend: while retailers, growers, and manufacturers reported an increase in their sales (+11% net balance), they also reported a sharp fall in profits (-27% net balance). This indicates that rising costs, rather than declining demand, are the primary drivers of this weaker performance.

HTA Members cited increases in the National Living Wage and employer National Insurance Contributions, alongside rising fuel and material costs, as the main causes of profit reduction. Businesses also reported the knock-on effect of wage increases pushing up pay structures, while weakened consumer confidence, linked in part to global instability, including the Iran conflict, is compounding the pressure.

The impact is now affecting longer-term business decisions, with investment intentions falling across all five tracked categories; just 62% of members plan at least one investment, down from 70% in the previous quarter and 74% in quarter 3 of 2025, showing the downward trend. Among those already behind profit expectations, 63% say they plan to cut or slow investment.

Confidence is also deteriorating. Medium-term outlook has fallen to 4.2 out of 7, while long-term confidence has dropped to 4.0 — the lowest level since the start of the pandemic.

While landscapers remain relatively resilient, with strong short-term pipelines, many report increasing difficulty converting new enquiries, suggesting cost pressures and weaker consumer confidence are beginning to affect future demand.

The HTA said the widening gap between sales and profit performance shows sustained cost pressures are now directly constraining growth and investment across the sector.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA, said: “Sales are holding up, but businesses are not seeing the benefit. Costs are rising faster than revenues, squeezing margins across our sector.

“This is not one single pressure, it is the cumulative effect of rising employment costs, higher energy bills, fuel, materials and increasing regulatory burden all landing at once.

“The increases in employer National Insurance and the National Living Wage alone are significant, particularly in a labour-intensive sector like ours, where it is estimated to have added £134 million to industry costs, but they also sit alongside a wider set of cost pressures that businesses simply cannot absorb indefinitely.

“We are now seeing the consequences. Profits are falling, investment is being delayed, and confidence is at its lowest level since the pandemic.

“If the government is serious about growth, it must address that cumulative cost burden. Without action, businesses will continue to scale back at a time when they should be investing, growing and creating jobs.”

The HTA is calling for action to ease cost pressures, including extending energy support to horticultural businesses, a more responsive, streamlined, and investment-friendly business rates system, reducing regulatory and financial barriers to open up funding opportunities, and reducing trade friction with the EU.

This National Children’s Gardening Week, the Horticultural Trades Association is highlighting the benefits of gardening for young people, inspiring them, and supporting their physical activity, education and wellbeing.

Recent research from the HTA’s Value of Gardens report found that children living more than a 20-minute walk from green spaces experienced two extra hours of screen time and poorer mental health than those living within a 5-minute walk. To promote participation and enhance children’s health, National Children’s Gardening Week (23 – 31 May 2026) connects families with the joy of gardening and encourages them to achieve quick results from seed sowing, planting, and other gardening activities.

Lee Connelly, The Children’s Gardening Coach, returns as National Children’s Gardening Week ambassador to inspire young minds and provide a fun, educational backdrop for a visit to a garden centre. New for 2026 is the Great Garden Centre Mystery, an interactive, family-friendly adventure that leads children and their parents on a fun journey of discovery to find hidden mysteries around garden centres. The initiative encourages families to explore their local garden centre and to learn, play, and connect with gardening in a fun and imaginative way.

Families who take part in the mystery and snap a photo of themselves at the garden centre will be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 National Garden Gift Card, giving them the chance to continue their gardening journey at home.

Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), said: “Inspiring the next generation of gardeners is at the heart of National Children’s Gardening Week. The Great Garden Centre Mystery will be a perfect half-term activity for families, encouraging footfall, dwell time, and engagement at our member sites, while also demonstrating how accessible and enjoyable gardening can be. It encourages children to get hands-on, building confidence, skills, and curiosity that can lead to lifelong interest and, hopefully, also future careers in horticulture. We are delighted to welcome Lee Connelly back as ambassador, whose passion for children’s gardening plays a key role in bringing this initiative to life across garden centres nationwide.”

Lee Connelly said: “Garden centres are incredible places for families, and The Great Garden Centre Mystery adds a layer of adventure that gets children excited to explore. Cracking the code together creates shared memories and shows children that gardening is full of curiosity, fun, and magic.”

Get involved

National Children’s Gardening Week is a fantastic opportunity for families and garden centres to celebrate the joys of gardening together.

<nw:body>
Greenfingers Charity is launching Floral Friday on Friday 12th June 2026, the first day of Greenfingers trekkers’ ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro. It will be a one-day national fundraising and awareness campaign designed to unite supporters across the UK in a shared moment of colour, connection and giving.

Timed to coincide with the moment the 23-strong trek team begin their climb, Floral Friday invites the industry to come together in a visible show of support, helping to fund the creation of a new garden at Naomi & Jack’s, a children’s hospice in in Winchester.

Supporters are encouraged to:

Wear something floral

Share a photo using #FloralFriday

Donate to support the Kilimanjaro trekkers and Greenfingers hospice gardens

Bearing the slogan 'Wear Flowers. Power the Climb', the campaign is built around a powerful shared message: “Today they climb. We climb with them.”

A Shared Moment of Climb and Celebration

Floral Friday transforms the start of the Kilimanjaro ascent into a collective national send-off. As trekkers take their first steps towards the summit, supporters across the UK will symbolically 'climb with them' through acts of visibility, storytelling and fundraising.

Every floral outfit worn, photo shared and donation made helps drive momentum for Greenfingers’ mission to create peaceful, life-enhancing garden spaces for children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Linda Petrons, Greenfingers Director of Fundraising & Communications, said: “Floral Friday is about more than fundraising, it’s about connection and a show of support. On the very day our trekkers begin their ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro, we want supporters everywhere to feel part of that journey. Whether you wear flowers, share a photo or donate, you are helping to build something lasting for children and families who rely on hospice gardens for comfort, play and peace.”

Getting Involved

Taking part is simple:

Wear your best or worst florals on Friday 12th June

Share a photo using #FloralFriday

Donate to support the trekkers and hospice garden programme: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/greenfingers-kilimanjaro2026

Every action helps create momentum for Greenfingers’ work transforming outdoor spaces in children’s hospices into magical, therapeutic gardens.

It’s been yet another big year for The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) at the Brand & Lifestyle Licensing Awards (B&LLAs), where its licensing team made it two in a row with another win – its third – in the prestigious Best Licensed Heritage or Institution Brand category.

But the big news came at the climax of the show when, to her amazement and everyone’s delight, RHS Licensing Manager Cathy Snow was presented with The Brand Licensing Ambassador Of The Year Award, a special award given annually to individuals who have contributed greatly to the evolution of brand licensing.

In her presentation speech Jakki Brown, Managing Director at Max Publishing, which owns and organises the B&LLAs, highlighted Cathy’s kind and caring leadership, her respect for brands’ sensibilities and core values, and her ability to nurture relationships with colleagues and business partners among the many qualities that made her a worthy recipient of this award.

Jakki also emphasised Cathy’s pioneering work in her field, specifically her prescience in seeing the potential of charity and heritage brands as a licensing opportunity, firstly through her influence on the RSPCA’s licensing programme, and then through working with and developing the licensing programme of the RHS, a major heritage brand clearly burgeoning with potential. But, Jakki added, even while evolving and building the brand, Cathy never lost sight of the RHS mission and core values, which include a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

As Jakki pointed out, Cathy’s work on this well-loved brand has helped it to expand its reach beyond gardening and homeware into many new areas, from fashion to food, handbags to health & beauty – and even dolls’ prams.

To great applause and gasps of delight (this had been a very well-kept secret, even from the RHS itself), Jakki concluded: “It gives me enormous pleasure to announce that the B&LLAs Brand Ambassador 2026 award goes to Cathy Snow, Licensing Manager of the Royal Horticultural Society.”

This wasn’t the only headline news for the RHS at this event. It again made a strong showing at the B&LLAs, with eight nominations and a win in the highly competitive Best Licensed Heritage or Institution Brand award, open to museum, gallery, heritage, charity or visitor attraction brands. Every nominee in this category was a household name with a long and distinguished history, which made this win, which the RHS also achieved in 2017 and 2025, even more impressive.

The 2026 B&LLAs have capped another excellent year for the RHS licensing team, which in recent years has grown its licensing programme, opened doors to new retailers, collaborated with well-known brands as well as small craft and family-run brands, supported UK industry and expanded the number of countries it reaches. It has done all this, moreover, while introducing substantial changes in sourcing and sustainability practices and always ensuring that licensees and licensed products are aligned with RHS objectives.

Kevin Smith, Senior Licensing Development Executive, RHS says: “As Jakki noted, Cathy’s nurturing nature has brought the best out of this small and close-knit team, all of whom have been inspired by her leadership. We have long had first-hand experience of the transformative effect of Cathy’s work on the RHS licensing programme and were all thrilled to see her marvellous work acknowledged on the biggest stage of all for heritage licensing.”

Cathy Snow Licensing Manager RHS adds: “It was wonderful yet again to see the RHS secure so many nominations and I was delighted that we won the Best Heritage or Institution Brand award for the third time, but receiving The Brand Licensing Ambassador Of The Year was completely unexpected. I am, of course, honoured, but I have to say this is not only a personal accolade but also a tribute to the many people who have worked on and supported the RHS campaign over the years, in particular my hard-working, committed and skilful team and the many wonderful licensees that have come on board and, quite often, stayed with us for a very long time.”

The group added 6 centres during the year and Chairman Simon Burkes reports that they ended the year with their lowest debt ratio since 2021.

He goes on to say: “Like for like (LFL) sales were +6.1%, with +6.3% in Garden Centres and 5.8% in Restaurants. Total sales were up by almost 19%. This is again an outperformance of the market in terms of LFL sales, albeit by a small margin this year. Performance was strong across almost all departments, with the Garden Leisure category, which includes furniture and barbeques, achieving a remarkable 20% LFL growth.”

Managing Director Alan Roper explains: “Profit increased by 44% (£9.6m) to £31.4m, while EBITDA rose from £34.7m to £46.9m, underlining the inherent strength of the business and the effectiveness of disciplined commercial management.

“This outcome was achieved despite a £3m adverse impact on profit resulting from above inflation increases in the National Living Wage of 6.7% and higher employers’ National Insurance contributions introduced in April. Through focused management action, this impact was fully absorbed within the year.

“During 2026, the focus will be on staff efficiency benchmarking against internal best in class performance, with the expectation that this will deliver further profit optimisation without compromising service quality.

“Our priority is to continue enhancing profit through profit gap reduction and overhead optimisation. Lowering energy expenses remains an ongoing objective, achieved through the adoption of advanced energy saving technologies.

“As we move into 2026, our strategic priorities are clear and focused on strengthening profit resilience within a structurally more expensive operating environment.”

Simon Burke concludes his Chairman's report: “I want to thank our colleagues, now numbering more than 5,000, who work in all weathers to deliver these results for us all. At our annual awards event in March, we had over 800 people attending. What was striking is that despite the significant increase in the size of the business, there is still the same great sense of enterprise, energy and esprit de corps amongst the whole group, which bodes well for our future.”

Greenfingers Chairman, Boyd Douglas Davies told GTN Xtra: "The garden was beautiful and the answer we gave to the constant question, from visitors 'how long has it been here' was met with gasps when we said 'just three weeks!' The detailing was exceptional and nobody could believe it was a newly created garden.

"Tom, Jon and Aimee did a brilliant job and everyone at Greenfingers was incredibly proud to stand alongside the garden and tell the story of life after Malvern. When this garden is recreated at the James Hopkins Trust in Gloucester it will be another wonderful hospice garden providing a valuable space for children, families, carers and wildlife."

"'Lifted By Birds' designed for nature, loved by people! Proud recipients of the People's Choice Award at RHS Malvern Spring Garden Festival 2026!"
