Environmental issues and sustainability are on the nation’s agenda and the gardening industry has an important role to play in increasing sustainability, especially as the number of gardeners has increased significantly in the UK in the last 24 months.
Hozelock is committed to increasing the sustainability of its products, packaging and manufacturing processes and is making big steps to improve its carbon footprint in 2022. As a business, it pledges to develop sustainable practices, involving product development and operational activities, which will be driven by three key areas; renew, reuse and recycle.
The business is reducing its single use plastic packaging across the range, removing over 95 tonnes of single use plastic packaging and, where possible, Hozelock ensures packaging is made from recycled materials that are easy to recycle or compost, as well as sourcing cardboard packaging from FSC approved sources.
In addition, the spray gun packaging will also be changing from spring 2022 across Hozelock’s standard gun range, to reduce the header which the product is mounted to by 34% and ensure it is 100% recyclable. This change will save 2.5 tonnes of card per year, without compromising on the packaging quality.
Hozelock’s attention is also focused on the products themselves and from 2022, its knitted hose range, which includes Ultimate, Ultramax and Ultraflex, will be made from 40% recycled PVC*. By working with sister company Tricoflex, old PVC hoses can be collected, recycled and made into new hoses. The update will remove 535 tonnes of virgin PVC material from the range.
Sustainability has also been at the forefront of Hozelock’s NPD for 2021/22, with the new EasyMix 2-in-1, waste-saving composter, manufactured using more than 85% recycled plastic, and being 100% recyclable. This USP will be promoted to customers to emphasise that the product can be recycled in an eco-friendly manner.
