Online petition launched to get Welsh garden centres re-opened – sign it NOW!

A petition has been launched in an attempt to re-open garden centres in Wales as soon as possible.

The petition, created by Nicola Pugh (pictured above), senior operations manager at award-winning Pugh’s Garden Centres in South Wales, needs to attract 10,000 signatures for it to be considered in the Senedd Cymru, the Welsh parliament. So far 2,109 have signed the online petition.

Garden centre bosses in Wales have been left frustrated by having to close in lockdown while centres in England have remained open.

They feel there are lots of positive reasons why they should be allowed to re-open, citing the following:

  • Gardening keeps people at home
  • Gardening brings significant mental and physical benefits
  • Garden centres are large, airy spaces with excellent safety measures in place
  • The plant supply chain cannot be switched off and on. In many cases plants go to waste if they cannot reach garden centres
  • Online, click and collect and home deliveries are not the answer. They are particularly difficult for independent garden centres

Now, Nicola is urging as many people as possible to sign the petition so that the Senedd is forced to debate the matter.

Great roofing products for the garden make-over boom
GTN Xtra Promotion

Britain’s gardens are set for a make-over boom in 2021, with DIY enthusiasts putting garden sheds, summer houses and other timber outbuildings high on their agendas for a spruce up in the coming months. Onduline, a global leader in the manufacture of eco-friendly bituminous corrugated sheeting, has a wide range of light weight roofing products that are perfect for garden projects.

Britain’s gardens are set for a make-over boom in 2021, with DIY enthusiasts putting garden sheds, summer houses and other timber outbuildings high on their agendas for a spruce up in the coming months.

A number of independent surveys have confirmed the trend for spending time and money on making the most of our personal green oases shows no sign of letting up.

Onduline, a global leader in the manufacture of eco-friendly bituminous corrugated sheeting, has a wide range of light weight roofing products that are perfect for garden projects.

ONDULINE CLASSIC is the original ‘high performance’ bitumen corrugated roofing panel. Made from 50% to 60% recycled materials, these lightweight roofing sheets are suitable for both renovation and new construction projects.

The sheets are finished with a colour pigment and resin impregnation process that ‘stains’ the colour into the sheet to provide excellent colour retention properties and enhanced U.V. resistance.

Carrying a 15-year guarantee, ONDULINE CLASSIC roof solution is a popular roof product for guaranteed waterproofing as well as providing exceptional thermal and acoustic comfort.

The bitumen roof panels and related accessories are quick and easy to install. The panels are extremely light (only 3 kg/m²) and flexible making them easy to carry.

To install ONDULINE CLASSIC corrugated roofing sheets is simple. No specialist tools are required.

Managing Director Paul Duffy said: “Sales of our range of lightweight roofing solutions rose significantly across the summer and autumn, and we’re confident  that trend will continue from the coming spring and onwards.

“People have rediscovered the joy of being outside in their own space, and even using it as a place to work from with a home office in their gardens.”

Jeno Floral - pick of the Christmas Bestsellers
GTN Xtra Promotion

Jeno Floral's success with Christmas product sales in 2020 meant they grew the number of their lines in the GTN Bestsellers Top100 from three in 2019 to five this year...

Jeno Floral's success with Christmas product sales in 2020 meant they grew the number of their lines in the GTN Bestsellers Top100 from three in 2019 to five this year, and one of their lines, the Floral Gold/Red/Silver Holly Pick, was in the Top 10 Bestselling Christmas lines of the year.

The Jeno Floral Gold/Red/Silver Holly Pick increased volume sales by 4% in the GTN Bestsellers Garden centre Epos data to move up one place to No 10 overall.

Their Robin Pick also grew sales by 4% to move up 14 places to No 34.

Three new Jeno lines entered the GTN Top 100 for the first time: Jeno Poinsettia Clip Gold/Red/Silver at No 20, Jeno Glitter Poinsettia Bush at No 69 and Jeno Log/Cone/Berry Pick at No 85.

"We are very proud to have 5 items in the Garden Trade News Top 100 selling Christmas list for 2020," Jeno Florals Director John Clayton told GTN Xtra.

"We have seen a year-on-year growth on our Christmas range.  Three of the lines in the top 100 were Christmas picks and we’ve added to the range this year with a few more fashion colours such as pink and pale blue which we were asked for a lot last year.

"Our velvet Poinsettia bush with glitter edge was in the top 100 list, which is superb."

"We’ve got a fantastic new range of single stem decorations this year that we have had an amazing response from this year.

"As we don’t have Harrogate or Spring fair to show our lines this year, we have finished a renovation on our amazing large showroom. We have the space to present the whole of the Christmas range for socially distanced appointments and for those that can’t make it to Manchester we can do virtual appointments via zoom or facetime. Greenfingers Charity welcomes Guy Topping as Trustee

Greenfingers Charity has announced that Guy Topping, Managing Director of The Barton Grange Group, has joined the charity’s Board of Trustees...

Greenfingers Charity has announced that Guy Topping, Managing Director of The Barton Grange Group, has joined the charity’s Board of Trustees.

Guy, whose career in the family garden centre started at the age of four, is said to have garden retail in his blood. During his twenty plus years as part of the board at The Barton Grange Group, Guy has taken the garden centre division from one centre to three and then back to one again. The garden centre at Brock is often cited as the best in the world and in 2018 The Flower Bowl, a state-of-the-art leisure destination, opened its doors on the same site.

As an active tennis player, golfer and curler, Guy’s enthusiasm for sport has seen him put the FUN into FUNdraising for Greenfingers, both on and off the pitch at many GCA and more recently IGCA Conferences!  Guy’s passion to support young people doesn’t stop with Greenfingers, he is also Chairman of Preston Youth Zone which, once built will deliver twenty first-century youth provision to the young people of Preston and surrounding areas.

Talking about his appointment to the Greenfingers Board of Trustees, Guy said: “Greenfingers has always had a spot close to my heart with its combination of great horticulture and deserving young people. The gardens it builds make such a difference to people at possibly the most desperate of times. I am looking forward to joining some great people and hope to be able to contribute to a rosy future for this fantastic charity. “

Sue Allen, Chairman of Greenfingers Charity added: “I am not only delighted as Chairman of Greenfingers but also on a personal level that Guy has agreed to become a Trustee.  He and I have worked closely together over more years than I care to remember.  I was his Vice Chairman of GCA, and I also had great fun on his committee creating the International Garden Centre Congress in the UK in 2009.  He has always been a reliable supporter of Greenfingers and many of you will know of his expertise as a Master of Ceremonies and an Auctioneer extracting huge bids for the most unlikely items when raising funds for Greenfingers at GCA conferences and events.  I know he will prove to be a great addition to our already enthusiastic and energetic team of Trustees.”

GIMA launches the UK garden industry’s first ‘Plastic Packaging Pledge’

GIMA has launched the industry’s first ‘Plastic Packaging Pledge’ in response to the global impact of plastic packaging usage and the potential environmental damage this packaging can cause as a result of incorrect use and careless disposal...

GIMA has launched the industry’s first ‘Plastic Packaging Pledge’ in response to the global impact of plastic packaging usage and the potential environmental damage this packaging can cause as a result of incorrect use and careless disposal.

Recognising that many of its members rely on plastic packaging for the safe storage and transportation of their products, the GIMA Plastic Packaging Pledge has been developed with the objective of minimising any adverse impact from all types of plastic packaging used in the garden products supply chain. The pledge uniquely establishes a set of achievable targets for all GIMA members to reduce their reliance on single-use plastic packaging and to improve the rates of recycling and reuse, including targets which align with the government’s proposed plastic tax (due to come into force in April 2022), which will see any business using plastic packaging which is less than 30% recycled content taxed at £200 per tonne.

To support GIMA members in meeting the pledge targets, the trade association has put in place a range of resources and access to specialist expertise. The programme will kick off with a series of online training webinars in late January, whilst a dedicated webpage, providing support and advice for members, has also been made available.

The GIMA Plastic Packaging Pledge states that, by 2025, member companies will:

  • Remove identified ‘problem plastics’
  • Eliminate unnecessary plastic packaging
  • 100% of all plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable
  • 70% of all plastic packaging to be effectively recycled or composted
  • 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging

Vicky Nuttall, GIMA Director said: “It’s a fact that consumers are becoming increasingly knowledgeable and demanding of brands and manufacturers to respond to the issue of plastic waste. By creating the Plastic Packaging Pledge, we are not only supporting our members to make their businesses more sustainable but are also helping them respond to these emerging consumer demands; thereby building their competitiveness. “

GIMA is also working closely with the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) to ensure that the Plastic Packaging Pledge aligns with the HTA’s own sustainability strategy.

Webinars are free of charge for GIMA members, who are encouraged to visit the website for further information www.gima.org.uk

Evergreen Garden Care signs new partnership with David Domoney

After a hugely successful first year, leading garden care brand Evergreen Garden Care has announced that it will continue working with Chartered Horticulturalist and TV Gardener, David Domoney...

After a hugely successful first year, leading garden care brand Evergreen Garden Care has announced that it will continue working with Chartered Horticulturalist and TV Gardener, David Domoney.

One of the key calendar events this year will be the Chelsea Flower Show, where Evergreen Garden Care’s leading brand Miracle-Gro will sponsor David’s major exhibit, entitled ‘My Houseplant Changed My Life’ inspired from his new Book published by DK. With the recent news of Chelsea Flower Show being rescheduled from May to 25th September 2021, Miracle-Gro and David Domoney are pleased to confirm their continued support of the RHS event.

The exciting exhibit looks at the symbiotic relationship between humans and plants inside the home, and the benefits of keeping those plants healthy. It will visualise the positive role that indoor plants have on our physical and mental wellbeing, which is particularly topical as many people have been home-schooling and working from home since the first lockdown in March 2020.

In the first year of their partnership and during the initial months of lockdown, Miracle-Gro and David Domoney launched a Facebook Live Series, Grow Your Own At Home. David was on hand to share his experience and garden care advice, plus answer viewers’ questions, especially those new gardeners who were beginning to enter the category.

In addition to this, Miracle-Gro sponsored David’s charity initiative, Cultivation Street in association with the Daily Mirror, as well as working together for television and PR opportunities. Now in its 8th year, the scheme shared moving stories about how children, communities and individuals suffering with poor health used gardening to get through a very turbulent period.

David Domoney comments, “I am delighted to be working with Evergreen Garden Care again during 2021 as brand ambassador to help grow more enjoyment for gardeners. Working together to create ‘My Houseplant Changed My Life’ for Chelsea Flower Show is a very momentous development in our partnership. Under the current circumstances, the management team at the RHS have made the right decision by moving the date to a hopefully safer situation. It gives confidence to both visitors and exhibitors who love and support this very special event.

“Cultivation Street is very close to my heart; it’s an important scheme that encourages communities and schools to work together and share the positive power of plants and nature. Cultivation Street Garden Centre Ambassadors are integral to helping make Cultivation Street what it is today, and we thank them all for their ongoing support and kindness shown to their local communities and schools.”

Mark Portman, Managing Director of UK & Ireland at Evergreen Garden Care also comments, “We’ve loved having David as part of the wider Evergreen Garden Care team during 2020 and are looking forward to working with him again. We know that this is a difficult time for many, and we recognise this change in date to September for the historic Chelsea Flower Show will pose a challenge to many growers.

“However, we see that September will be an opportunity to showcase the incredible floral displays that can be seen in the Autumn, and we are proud to support the RHS in working to ensure the show can still go ahead this year.”

RHS awards key outdoor pots license to Woodlodge

The Royal Horticultural Society has announced a new licensee for outdoor pots, one of its key gardening categories. The four-year license has been awarded to Woodlodge Products. The first products in the partnership will be launched to retailers for pre-order in September 2021...

The Royal Horticultural Society has announced a new licensee for outdoor pots, one of its key gardening categories. The four-year license has been awarded to Woodlodge Products.

The first products in the partnership will be launched to retailers for pre-order in September 2021. They will be distributed to retail outlets from January 2022.

Although the partnership is still in its early stages, Woodlodge is already making preliminary plans for the first range. It will include both classic and modern designs and a full selection of sizes to accommodate any outdoor space. The final version of the first range will also incorporate standard terracotta, glazed and fibre clay pots.

For the design process, Woodlodge will have access to the whole range of RHS design assets, including its style guides and artwork from the RHS Lindley Collections, the world’s finest collection of botanical art. All product will either be embossed or debossed with the RHS logo, creating consumer confidence at point of purchase.

Woodlodge has over 1,500 garden centre accounts located throughout the UK and Ireland, all of which will be the primary focus for the new range. Woodlodge has a history of creating innovative products and eye-catching in-store merchandising so the launch of the new RHS-endorsed range is eagerly anticipated by both retailers and customers.

The timing of this new partnership is highly appropriate, due to an upswing in gardening last year. Historically the demographic for purchasing outdoor garden pots has been amongst older adults with a moderate to high disposable income. However, the current pandemic has introduced a whole new range of customers from across the age spectrum and social demographic to gardening and gardening products. But they’re not just rediscovering their outdoor space. Many are also discovering the enormous benefits of gardening to physical and mental health at a particularly demanding and stressful time. The RHS ranges will therefore target all members of this fast-expanding group of budding gardeners, who have embraced nature during the lockdowns.

Michael Wooldridge – Managing Director, Woodlodge Products, says: “As the market-leading supplier of garden pottery in the UK, it’s important for us to work with brands and partners that have a strong resonance for gardeners. To be associated with the RHS, a charity that aims to inspire a passion for gardening and growing plants and promotes the physical and mental advantages of gardening, is, for Woodlodge, a natural fit. The RHS is a highly regarded and recognisable brand and will offer consumers both peace of mind and confidence when buying our range of products.”

Cathy Snow, Licensing Manager, RHS, says: “Our members and supporters are, not surprisingly, keen to have the highest-quality products in their gardens and outdoor pots are a very important category for the RHS. We are therefore delighted to be working with Woodlodge, which has always maintained high levels of quality and service while providing continual innovation and style to all its ranges.”

Woodlodge launches new Snowlodge Christmas virtual portal

Christmas may be but a distant memory but Woodlodge is already feeling the festive spirit thanks to its newly launched Snowlodge Christmas Décor range...

Christmas may be but a distant memory but Woodlodge is already feeling the festive spirit thanks to its newly launched Snowlodge Christmas Décor range. This exciting offering, made up of over 1,400 products, is supported by a dedicated product hub where the full range is on display, whilst a newly introduced virtual experience will enable buyers to view the full range from the comfort of their office.

Featuring festive favourites such as stars, baubles, ornaments, figurines, lighting and plush, the new Snowlodge offering from Woodlodge represents a true one-stop-shop for all things Christmas. Garden centre buyers who want to get up close and personal with the full range now have two options available to them, providing complete flexibility and Covid-Secure compliance.

A dedicated product hub is available to view at the Cranmore Park Conference Centre in Solihull. Access to this winter wonderland is available by appointment only. Stocked with the complete Snowlodge offering, buyers will be walked through the area by a Woodlodge sales representative, who will outline the product USPs and can assist with direct ordering. This hub will be open until March 31st, with deliveries into retailers earmarked from August 31st 2021.

Appreciating that current restrictions mean some retailers may be unable to travel, Woodlodge has also launched a dedicated virtual showroom experience where buyers can ‘walk’ the product hub and browse the product offering from the comfort of their own office or home.  Not only does this virtual portal minimise social contact, but it enables entire buying teams to view the Snowlodge Christmas Décor offering together, helping to make more definitive choices for their centres ahead of the 2021 festive season. Access to the virtual portal will be available from your sales manager of by e-mailing taratruman@woodlodge.co.uk

Retailers will also be pleased to learn that Woodlodge’s Honey & Wild range of garden décor will also be on display via both the hub and virtual portal. First launched at the company’s ‘Glee’ showroom, Glee@Woodlodge, in late 2020, the display will include a unique collection of fun, quirky products such as lanterns, metal statues, garden mirrors, ironware, wall planters, bird feeders, plant supports and garden mobiles. The introduction of Honey & Wild follows the company’s acquisition of Adobe Wholesale and The Garden Foundry in July 2020. The cutting-edge collection fuses art with entertainment, offering widespread year-round appeal and tapping into the latest interior and exterior accessories trends, together acting as a powerful sales driver during key gifting periods within garden retail.

Talking about the launch of Snowlodge Christmas Décor, Managing Director, Michael Wooldridge said: “The launch of Snowlodge could not have come at a better time, as retailers are currently assessing the success of their 2020 festive offering. With Snowlodge we want to offer a carefully curated portfolio of products that have been selected to drive sales during the crucial Christmas season. For us, this range is about delivering stylish, trend-led and classical décor ideas, all backed by the highest quality promise and unrivalled customer service which has become synonymous with the Woodlodge brand.

“We also hope that the measures we have put in place with both the Snowlodge product hub and virtual portal will help our retail customers to safely and comfortably interact with the range. The safety of our customers and staff is of paramount importance to us, which is why we have taken these necessary steps to ensure that we all remain Covid safe. However, these steps do not compromise on access to our offering. Retail buying teams can still spend the time looking at each product in detail, working closely with one of our sales representatives – in person or virtually - to find out everything they need to know about the Snowlodge Christmas décor range before placing their order.”

Interested parties wanting to book their place at the Woodlodge Snowlodge product hub or to access the virtual portal, can do so by emailing Tara Truman, Category Development Manager at Woodlodge on taratruman@woodlodge.co.uk. Alternatively, please email your Woodlodge sales rep directly the hard copy or PDF of the Christmas catalogue.

Thrive with Notcutts during lockdown

Notcutts Garden Centres have partnered with national charity Thrive to help cultivate the nation’s wellbeing through gardening...

Notcutts Garden Centres have partnered with national charity Thrive to help cultivate the nation’s wellbeing through gardening.

Launched just before the first UK wide lockdown in March 2020, the ‘Cultivating Wellbeing in Gardens and Nature’ course has been enjoyed by many – helping them to connect with nature and understand why being outdoors is so beneficial.

The free online course, developed by experts in therapeutic horticulture from Thrive, has been designed to encourage people to use their gardens to spend more time connecting with nature as a tool to restore wellbeing and improve physical and mental health.

Caroline Notcutt, Vice-Chairman of Notcutts Garden Centres, said: “At Notcutts, we have always been passionate about the benefits that gardening can bring to mental and physical health as my Great-Grandfather, Roger Crompton Notcutt, was advised to work outdoors due to ill health. It was then that his passion for horticulture began and Notcutts was founded over 120 years ago”.

She continued: “We are delighted to have had this opportunity to partner with a charity we have been long standing supporters of and proud to be involved in making such a wonderful experience accessible to all. It’s been well received with a survey of students showing a 99 per cent positive rating among respondents. With people now spending more time at home we feel it is the right time to encourage more people to learn about the benefits of being in gardens and nature”.

The five-hour course, which can be completed over any length of time, is split into three short modules. Suitable for any age and ability, the course includes expert advice and practical ideas on how to engage with nature, using interactive activities and video tutorials. Users are encouraged to develop and implement their own wellbeing plan, even if they don’t have access to a garden.

Damien Newman, Thrive’s Training, Education and Consultancy Manager, said: “Coronavirus and its associated social restrictions has underlined the importance of spending time in gardens and nature to maintain good health, and we are delighted this course has helped so many people”.

He continued: “We’re pleased that Notcutts' support means we can make this course freely available and hope it will lead to more people using gardens as a pathway to wellbeing as they continue to face lockdown and other challenges."

DJ Turfcare – proud suppliers of the RHS endorsed organic-based lawn care offering including MO Bacter – has launched a new consumer brochure, designed to help increase consumer confidence at the point of sale, whilst also encouraging a higher average basket spend throughout the year.

The 12-page brochure perfectly outlines the many benefits and applications of each of the products in the DJ Turfcare portfolio, including a handy timeline so consumers can quickly and easily see when each product should be applied to lawns, and an ‘at a glance’ guide to how much each bag will treat, meaning shoppers can secure the right quantity for their lawns.

In addition to outlining the full RHS-endorsed product portfolio, made up of MO Bacter, BIO-Lime, Recovery, MO Bacter Instant and the recently launched Autumn Lawn Treatment and Lawn Boost, the brochure also promotes add-on sales opportunities with the Viano Rotary Spreader.

Talking about the new brochure DJ Turfcare’s David Jenkins said: “With so much choice it can be difficult for consumers to make an informed decision at the point of sale. Our new brochure is designed to be a silent salesman, in that it will help consumers to see all the information about our products in one handy guide and will enable them to make an informed decision based on seasonality, lawn care needs and lawn size. The brochure can then be kept for future use, helping to generate brand loyalty and repeat sales for retailers.”

Stock information is real time, most importantly the quantity available, which removes the likelihood of overselling across channels. Orders placed on the web shop are seamlessly updated in OpSuite, providing the retailer’s team with full customer purchase history whether bought in-store or online for future target marketing” explains Keith Bateman, Director of Davidson Richards.

He adds: “Currently, 14 garden centre organisations are already benefitting from this close partnership. We started 2020 with just 2 mutual customers so a lot has happened in 2020!”.

One of the latest centres to benefit from the partnership is Beetham Nurseries.

Senior Manager, Ed Abbit explains: “Having been a customer of Davidson Richards for over 15 years, they have always ensured their EPoS solution uses the latest technology. With the onset of COVID restrictions last year, there was an unexpected and greatly increased demand with online sales. They introduced us to Garden Connect and we as a business quickly signed up for their entry level web shop which was turned around in a matter of weeks.

Given the team were working 12-hour days during COVID and the level of web shop orders coming in were increasing daily, if the site had not been integrated with OpSuite, our team would have become overwhelmed very quickly. Due to the success, we are already now adding even more features to the web shop which will be live this spring."

Ed also adds: “It’s been clear that combining the expert knowledge of two partners is the way to go, as we benefit from the experience and expertise from both businesses, compared to one provider trying to do it all. Every garden centre should have an integrated solution and offer customers a professional journey: in-store and online. Not only is their expertise beneficial to us as a business but the established partnership between Garden Connect and Davidson Richards means we benefit also from a smooth and efficient working relationship.”

What’s next in 2021?

In 2020, the partnership between Davidson Richards and Garden Connect grew significantly and this is only the beginning. Over the last few months, we have spoken to many garden centres who are interested to learn more. “In December alone, we had 3 new customers order fully integrated solutions as well as also helping many existing OpSuite customers reap the benefits of full integrated web shops” adds Keith Bateman.

There’s definitely more to come and we are excited to launch even more services ahead of spring. As we say in the Netherlands: “You’re faster alone, but you can reach further together!” explains Edwin Meijer.

Floriade cable car: a trip to the future

Visitors of Floriade Expo 2022 will enjoy a spectacular 5-minute ride experience from an 850 meters long ropeway above the park. In a gondola they will travel quickly between the southern and northern part of the Floriade park.

Just imagine the fantastic bird’s eye view you will have of the unique rectangular sections of the grounds, the arboretum enriched with trees, plants, shrubs and flower borders, the expo plots for the international exhibits and all other places of interest. The ropeway also offers a unique opportunity to showcase the potential for sustainable use of urban cable cars.

Sven Stimac, Chief Operating Officer of Floriade: “A cable car will offer our guests an experience that will provide an additional option, next to the planned pedestrian crossing over the A6 highway, to quickly travel across the 60 hectares of the Floriade park while at the same time having the opportunity to gently enjoy the landscaping, which will be clearly visible from above. By choosing this type of connection, the Floriade will realize an optimal distribution of visitors across the Floriade park as well as offer a comfortable means of transport with a high experience level.”

Available mid-2021 - Floriade Preview

The Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group and consulting and engineering firm Arcadis have already started constructions of the ropeway. It is expected to be operational this June. Visitors of the Floriade Preview in 2021 will already be using the cable car. They will embark at the northern part of the area, make a turn via the southern part across the A6 and return to the base station. In view of the ongoing construction in the southern part until April 2022, the boarding station in this section will not be used until then.

Green mobility

Together with Arcadis, Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group, Municipality of Almere and other partners the Floriade has a green mobility ambition for Floriade Expo 2022. During the International Horticultural Exposition Floriade will present a number of green mobility solutions, of which the cable car is one. A trip to the future!

“In terms of sustainable mobility solutions, the cable car seamlessly connects to the theme of Floriade ‘Growing Green Cities’. It needs limited electricity and offers high efficiency as regards infrastructure. With only 2 stations and 7 masts it only requires minimal space. In addition, the cable car will be re-used at another location after the Expo”, according to Stimac.

Accessibility

The ropeway’s trajectory diagonally crosses the Floriade park. Both stations will be at ground level and are easily accessed via foot- and cycle paths. In addition, the gondolas are accessible to everyone, even for those using mobility chairs.

Unique challenge

The unique and at the same time sizeable challenge is the crossing of the highway A6. A first for the Netherlands. Never before has a ropeway crossed a highway. This required alignment with the Department of Waterways and Public Works in order to ensure safety for both traffic and users of the cable car and to make sure that it will not cause disruptions to traffic on the highway. To accommodate the construction works the highway will be closed off for a short period early in Spring of 2021. The crossing of the A6 will constitute a special experience worth noting.

Floriade Expo 2022

Between 14 April and 9 October 2022, the city of Almere will be the stage for the International Horticultural Exposition Floriade Expo 2022. Together with national and international partners, the Dutch horticultural sector will present innovations and solutions for sustainable and livable cities. The theme “Growing Green Cities” will be central to the 60 hectares site. The Expo grounds will be a short travel distance from Amsterdam and directly adjacent to the highway A6 with a view of the Almere skyline.

Scotscape Groundscape is to donate 1% of the annual value of every new annual garden maintenance contract to Greenfingers Charity...

The company's managing director Darren Bosworth said: "Here we are in 2021 after one of the most extraordinary years and we’re feeling very happy to be here and as busy as ever.  As part of many positive changes here in the Scotscape Groundscape team, we really wanted to put our skills and horticultural knowledge to good use, in short we wanted to give something back.

"Our search began to find a charity which connected with the whole team and which had the power of gardens at its heart.  We are thrilled therefore to announce that with immediate effect we pledge to donate 1% of the annual value of every new Annual Garden Maintenance Contract we win to the brilliant charity Greenfingers.

"Greenfingers is national charity dedicated to supporting children who spend time in hospices around the UK, along with their families, by creating inspiring gardens for them to relax in and benefit from. Greenfingers create beautiful, well-designed outdoor spaces for children to enjoy with their family, friends and siblings, whether through play and fun, or therapeutic rest and relaxation.

"Greenfingers Charity is driven by the belief that time spent outdoors, away from the bedside, can offer children and families under considerable stress a vital opportunity to embrace the benefits of being in the fresh air and engaging with the natural environment. We are committed to creating specially designed, stimulating garden spaces that can bring many benefits to children with life-limiting conditions.  Whilst many people may take for granted the simple pleasure of being able to enjoy a garden, for these children, their siblings and their families, the chance to spend time together outdoors and away from the bedside is precious.

"Myself and the Groundscape team are all thrilled to commit to Greenfingers, we understand the wonderful benefits that gardens can bring to soothe and the significant role they play in the hospice and healthcare environment, we are really looking forward to raising funds and also rolling up our sleeves to support Greenfingers with the regeneration of some of their existing gardens."

Linda Petrons, director of fundraising and communications., said: "On behalf of us all at Greenfingers Charity, I would to say a huge thank you to Darren and his team for choosing to support our work. The generous pledge to help in a variety of ways during the partnership will certainly make a real difference to the lives of many seriously unwell children and their families. We very much look forward to working together this year."

A combination of lockdown#3 and wintry weather means that even shopping for gardening essentials stays at an all time low as far as the GTN Bestsellers Epos data tells us.

While all of the GTN Bestsellers sales indexes are a very long way behind last year sales of seeds, compost and seed propogation products are indicative of the activity and sales that will be top of the agenda when the weather improves.

Many centres we’ve spoken to over the past few weeks have reported receiving a lot of their pre-season gardening products orders already, with some even saying they’ve got their whole years’ worth of compost in stock.

As ever, we need the weather to improve and then some good news on the lockdown situation to allow for gardeners to get out and get growing.

Hillmount boss warns of disarray for gardeners in Northern Ireland as spring approaches

Hillmount owner Robin Mercer is calling on the government to provide assistance to the horticultural sector as gardeners in Northern Ireland face a spring of disarray due to the current situation surrounding the transportation of plants, garden furniture, gardening equipment and tools from GB and other parts of the world...

Hillmount owner Robin Mercer is calling on the government to provide assistance to the horticultural sector as gardeners in Northern Ireland face a spring of disarray due to the current situation surrounding the transportation of plants, garden furniture, gardening equipment and tools from GB and other parts of the world.

Speaking about the dire consequences for Northern Ireland gardeners Robin Mercer said: “For 80 years we have supported local suppliers and growers but the reality is that around 50% of our stock comes from outside Northern Ireland as we just don’t manufacture the goods or grow the plants here to meet customer demand.

“We have been quoted £12,000 for a container from China which would have previously cost £1,200 and although we can source plants from Holland or the Republic of Ireland, the fact is that the quality of product that customers of Hillmount expect come from plants grown in Great Britain.

“We have written to our elected representatives to appeal to them to see sense and support our industry as spring approaches otherwise families up and down the country will not be able to enjoy their gardens and benefit their mental health to the same extent that they did last year.

“As I try to juggle furloughed staff, an Eat Out To Help Out inspection, the red tape involved with trying to ship goods from China and the challenges with Customs around sourcing plants from GB I fear for our fourth generation family run garden centre business. Like many others we’re on the brink of collapse through no fault of our own.”

Fortuitously the Mercer family placed orders for garden furniture, seeds and seed potatoes ahead of time at the end of last year as they were fearful of the difficulties that lay ahead but now they are faced with having to absorb the costs of storing these items during lockdown.

Robin added: “We have even been told that the pallets the goods are travelling on even requires certification. The whole thing is ridiculous. We have been ordering the same plants, bird food and gardening tools for years and almost overnight a wooden handled trowel cannot be delivered to us. Roses can’t be shipped due to how they are grown. Yet one supplier in GB is saying they can ship our order to Europe and drive it to us via the Republic. Where is the sense in that?”

Hillmount is a fourth generation family owned gardening business with garden lifestyle stores in Ards, Bangor and Belfast.

Industry taskforce to produce roadmap for a peat-free future

A new taskforce, made up from a broad range of industry stakeholders, coordinated by the Horticultural Trades Association, has been created to produce a roadmap for the removal of peat from growing media.

Unlocking the complexities of the peat debate by encouraging collaboration of the broad range of industry stakeholders to produce a roadmap the removal of peat from growing media is the focus of a new taskforce, coordinated by the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA).

It aims to reinvigorate efforts to tackle the issue of peat use in horticulture, with representatives from each area of the industry producing a plan by the end of February defining a realistic timetable for achieving what a peat-free supply chain and outline the barriers that need to be overcome. This work will help inform Defra’s forthcoming England Peat Strategy.

Leading growers, representatives from retail and landscaping and experts from manufacturing will work alongside stakeholders including the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL), National Farmers Union (NFU) and Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), to represent each part of the sector and develop relevant actions within this new workplan.

The complex issue of finding suitable alternatives to satisfy the needs of professional growers and hobby gardeners alike has been the focus of efforts by parts of the horticulture sector for many years, with peat-use falling in 2020 to its lowest ever level.

Speaking of his ambitions for the new group, James Barnes, HTA Chairman, said: “The debate around peat use is nuanced and complex and to successfully negotiate a way forward we must take a more strategic approach. By working in a coordinated way with representatives from the whole supply chain we will have an aligned industry approach to peat-use for the first time. By the end of February, we will have a clear action plan, objectives across the board and timescales for when we can realistically expect results.”

The newly formed taskforce sees each part of the industry represented and responsible for tackling the relevant part of the problem. It will focus on key issues including:

•    Tackling obstacles that stand in the way of removing peat from professional growing media – how can plants be produced in less peat-based media
•    How to encourage consumers to adopt peat-free when purchasing either plants or compost products
•    Introducing a responsible sourcing scheme with logos at point of sale to inform customers of product provenance and relative responsibility score
•    Improving the quality and availability of data concerning composition

Jonathan Marquis, Head of Garden Centre Operations at Lovania and a member of the HTA’s Ornamentals Management Committee, said: “For growers, the issue of sourcing good quality growing media in reliable quantities is the crux of the matter. The industry joining forces to approach the problem from all directions, with proper coordination, is a very positive approach.”

Mike Burks, Chairman of the GCA and Managing Director of The Gardens Group, said: “Consumers have more of an interest than ever in the environmental impact of peat and, as retailers, we need to be able to respond with appropriate products and information. This taskforce is a real opportunity for the industry to offer information and education alongside choice to customers.”

Neil Bragg, Chairman of the Growing Media Association (GMA), said: “With the recent announcement from Bord na Mona confirming they are to stop harvesting peat in Ireland, there is more urgency than ever to understand the picture around alternatives and their cost and availability. I see this group as the best chance the industry has to see the work that’s been started begin to have an impact.”

Dave Sewell, Chairman of the APL, said: “As an industry we source thousands of plants each year, so the landscaping sector has an important role to play in this endeavour. By committing to being a part of this taskforce, we can make a real impact in terms of influencing the wider supply chain.”

With the HTA coordinating a joined-up approach to interacting with government, aligning policy inputs to policymakers, the stage is set for the whole supply chain to play its part in supporting real change.

Contributing representatives on the taskforce include:

Neil Bragg – Growing Media Association
Mike Burks – Garden Centre Association
Lee Abbey/Allie Hesketh – National Farmers Union
Alistair Griffiths, Royal Horticultural Society
Jonathan Marquis – Lovania (HTA’s Ornamental Management Committee)
Dave Sewell – Association of Professional Landscapers

AMES UK reports record revenues in 2020

Turnover for the AMES UK group of companies broke all the records in 2020. Kelkay, La Hacienda, Apta and True Temper all posted their largest ever trading months during the year. As a group, turnover exceeded £68m, an increase of more than 8% on 2019.

La Hacienda responded to the booming ‘staycation’ demand for outdoor heating with a record-breaking April, whilst Apta followed with sales in June that broke all previous records for a single month. Despite being forced to close for several weeks in the early part of the season, Kelkay recovered to deliver a record July whilst sales at True Temper in June exceeded £1m for the first time in their history.

The growth in sales, coinciding with the most challenging supply chain anyone can remember, meant that all four businesses put extra pressure on their teams. Paul North, Managing Director says “I have been totally astounded by the way the team responded to the unprecedented pressure we put ourselves under to keep our customers serviced during 2020. It’s incredible what can be achieved with a skilled, loyal and dedicated group of employees and I could not have wished for a better team.”

Paul also confirmed that overall, the business headcount has been extended by 10% in response, and is benefiting from an extensive programme of internal training, development and promotion to key roles from within the existing teams.  He added “I’m proud of the way we have been able to develop talent from within the team and we will be announcing further significant appointments in the coming weeks.”

Charles Stubbs, Lewis Fox and Nemanja Tintor, along with the rest of the BGC team, were proud as punch yesterday as their 58th centre at Thatcham in Berkshire opened.

The centre had been handed back to the landlords during the Wyevale Garden Centres sale of the century in and closed in September 2019 as the owners looked for a new leaseholder.  British Garden Centres took on the site in September 2020 and since then have refreshed the centre, enclosing a walkway at the Restaurant end to allow for extra covers, extending the covered sales area out into the planteria and hard surfacing the overflow car parking area which was previously a field.

Haskins Garden Centre in Snowhill, Crawley, has opened its doors to customers following a 12-month refurbishment costing £15m.

The new centre boasts a retail space of 11,813 sq.m., including an outdoor plant area and 440-seat restaurant complete with a newly installed pizza oven. Additional space has also been created to accommodate 170 restaurant guests on an outdoor patio.

Up to 70 new jobs have been created to accommodate the centre's expansion. Car parking has increased to 346 spaces.  See GTN Xtra's photo tour of the new centre below.

Chief executive Julian Winfield said the Snowhill team worked tirelessly to ensure the centre was able to remain open for the majority of the project, with minimal disruption.

“We can't wait to receive our customers' feedback on our new and improved facilities,” he added. “Over the years, we have built a loyal customer following and we are proud to be able to give back to them in this way with our new expanded centre.”

Haskins acquired the Snowhill site in 2003, inheriting a number of ageing buildings.

Haskins also has centres in Ferndown in Dorset, West End in Southampton and Roundstone in West Sussex. The family business recently acquired Forest Lodge Garden Centre, Bird World and Garden Style in Farnham.

Pictured (left to right): Julian Winfield, Jamie Haskins, Ally Haskins (married to Jamie) and Warren Haskins, the group's chairman.

The opening event was attended by the current GCA Chairman Mike Burks and three past Chairs; Warren Haskins, Sue Allen and Julian Winfield.
