City of Culture Baton visits Tong Garden Centre on its tour of Bradford wards

The City of Culture Baton was at Tong Garden Centre this week as part of its tour of local landmarks in the Tong and Wibsey ward.

The team at Tong, part of the Yorkshire Garden Centres group, were invited to take part by Ward Officer, Jayce Lambert and responded to the brief to be creative by transporting the baton around the site in a flower-filled wheelbarrow.

The Tong walk was one of a series of events taking place across all 30 wards of the Bradford district. Cllr Kamran Hussain, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety, said: "This is a way to bring our diverse communities together and explore the wonderful areas where we live.  It also offers our residents a chance to explore new areas of the district that they may not know so well."

The baton, which was designed by students from Carlton Bolling, is carried on each of the walks and passed on to the next ward.  Tong Garden Centre was nominated by the Area Offices as a local business which has contributed to its neighbourhood.

Yorkshire Garden Centres' head of marketing, Jo Dales, said: "We were delighted and proud to be nominated to play a part in these memorable events to celebrate Bradford City of Culture 2025."

The month-long initiative culminates in a special family fun day at Odsal Stadium on 31st July.

The Yorkshire Garden Centres group comprises Tong, Tingley, Otley and Bingley Garden Centres, plus Dean's York and Scarborough and the recently acquired Pennine Garden Centre in Huddersfield.
