Willem-Alexander, King of the Netherlands, will open the international horticulture exhibition Floriade Expo 2022 on the afternoon of Wednesday 13 April in Almere. 

With its theme ‘Growing Green Cities’ Floriade focuses on making cities more fun, liveable and sustainable. To this end, the Dutch horticulture sector, in conjunction with 400 (inter)national participants, including 33 countries, will present its innovative ideas and solutions.

The Floriade park is based on the arboretum designed by landscape architect Winy Maas. This collection of trees, bulbs, perennials and shrubs that visitors can walk through has been planted alphabetically. At The Green House visitors can see what flowers, plants, vegetables and fruit entail for consumers and society as a whole. Crop cultivation using innovations including drones, robots and vertical horticulture will be showcased.

The Dutch Innovation Experience, the government’s pavilion, will focus on the future of sustainable, circular housing construction. The pavilion was built from hundreds of bio-based materials including timber, straw, reeds, rubber, cattails, paprika stems and mycelium. Floriade is also home to ornamental gardens and pavilions from countries in Europe, Africa, America and Asia.

Visitors can cross the site using the cable car, an example of sustainable transport. Amsterdam and Almere’s ‘The Voice of Urban Nature’ pavilion shows how, together with inhabitants, they are working on the green cities of the future. M. is Flevoland’s new pavilion  for immersive art. Floriade also has an extensive art and culture programme.

The international horticulture exhibition is held once a decade in the Netherlands. This edition in Almere is the 7th Floriade and was organised in cooperation with the Nederlandse Tuinbouwraad (NTR), the national government, the Provincial Government of Flevoland and the Municipality of Almere.  After Floriade Expo 2022 is over, the site will be turned into a green, low-car-traffic, urban district.

Floriade Expo 2022

For six months, from 14 April 2022 until 9 October 2022, Almere (NL) will be the stage for the International Horticultural Exhibition Floriade Expo 2022. During the Floriade, the Dutch horticulture sector, together with national and international partners, will show green solutions that can make our cities more fun, liveable and sustainable. 

The theme of “Growing Green Cities” is central on the 60-hectare site. The exhibition grounds are a short travel distance from Amsterdam and directly alongside the A6 with a view of the Almere skyline.
