INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the 2021 edition of the GIMA New Product Digest unprecedented supply chain demand.

2020 will no doubt go down in history for all the wrong reasons, but as an industry we can all be proud of our efforts to continue trading throughout the most challenging of conditions, and when demand for all of our products exceeded expectations.

The absence of Glee at the NEC this year sadly means no GIMA innovators seed corn fund competition or winner this year, but we are committed to bringing this back next year to ensure we support exciting new entrants into our market.

At GIMA, we were pleased to have been able to work across the industry with our fellow trade bodies, the HTA, GCA and LOFA in order to support our respective members through the difficult early stages of lockdown, and then once again when we emerged to unprecendented demand for gardening products. With an influx of around 3 million new gardeners, and the restrictions we are all being forced to come to terms with for the forseable future, it looks like interest in our homes and gardens will continue into 2021 and beyond. Despite the difficulties we all faced, our members have continued to invest in growth by developing new products, packaging and merchandising solutions for the garden retail channel. To that end

The GTN Bestsellers Top 50 Ga Garden Products volume sales index just topped the previous ind high for September and mark a hig cle clear reversal of the downward tre trend seen since 2014 through to 2018. September 2020 Ga Garden Products volume sales clo closed at 14% up on 2019 levels. Notable sales increases in the last week of September were las see seen for more pot sales, tools and orchid care products.

Autumn Grow Your Own sales rise to new heights

Normally, as we start paying attention to Christmas sales, we wouldn’t be reporting on Veg-2-Gro sales anymore but this year they are not fading away – they even increased week on week at the end of the month. It seems that ‘new’ gardeners are knowing their onions and getting them planted for next year. For the month, GTN Bestsellers Epos data shows that sales reached a new month high, up 42% on last year. Onion sets, shallots and garlic bulbs lead the way at the end of the month with sales of the GTN Bestsellers Top 10 (all onions garlic and shallots) up by 54% on the same week last year. Highlights of the week were: !Taylors Garlic Thermidrome moved up three places to be the No 1 Bestselling Veg-2-Gro line, closely followed by Taylors French Garlic Topadrome. !Kapiteyn Garlic Cristo was the highest re-entry at No 13. !Thompson & Morgan Broad Bean Aquadulce Claudia climbed 33 places to No 14 to be the highest placed seed pack in the GTN Chart.
