Gardening spend set to increase in 2025

Thompson & Morgan asked UK gardeners about their plans for 2025, and the results may surprise you.

A gardening survey of 1,196 participants has revealed that consumer spending on gardening is set to rise in 2025 reflecting a continued interest in gardening and outdoor spaces.

The survey conducted by T&M found that 87% of respondents plan to spend the same or more on their gardens in 2025 compared to 2024. Statistics show that 70% of people are not cutting back in this essential area despite the cost-of-living crisis, with 18% saying they are going to spend even more.

News of consumers’ planned spending increase for 2025 will be music to the ears of UK garden retailers as we come to the end of a year that has been challenging for many.

Money spent on the garden is an investment, offering a space outdoors to relax and connect with nature, plus a space to spend time with pets, friends and family.

When asked about the previous 12 months, 68% of survey respondents said they’d spent up to £500 on their gardens in 2024. A further 19% spent £500 to £1,000 and an enthusiastic 13% spent over £1,000 perfecting their plots.

Commenting on the survey findings, David Phillips, T&M's B2C Sales Director, said:

“It’s clear from the results of our survey that customers see spending on their garden spaces as not only great value for money, but something worth investing more time, money and effort into.  We know how much joy a garden can bring and its effects on mental health and well-being. While the cost-of-living crisis refuses to go away, customers see real value in this as a household expense.”

The growing trend of increased spending on gardens may be attributed to a combination of factors – particularly the benefits to mental health and well-being and a focus on creating wildlife-friendly spaces. It also shines a spotlight on a consumer spending shift towards sustainability, health and environmental responsibility.
