Danny Clarke is a British Garden Designer and TV presenter who shot to fame as BBC’s Instant Gardener, having started his own bespoke garden design company, the Black Gardener, in 1997. Currently, he can also be seen on ITV’s Love Your Garden, alongside Alan Titchmarsh.

Since his debut on television as the BBC’s Instant Gardener in 2015, Danny has graced our screens with a host of popular garden makeover shows and horticultural advice. More recently, Danny co-presented Filthy Garden: SOS on Channel 5.

Danny is passionate about making a difference to climate change and community integration. He is known for his charismatic and fun approach to garden design which is affordable and desirable to people of all ages. He believes “having access to a garden should be a right, not a privilege” and his biggest wish is that we all make the most of our green spaces for the health of the planet, our communities, and our souls. Following his passion, Danny co-directs CIC Grow To Know, who are committed to bringing horticulture to young people and disadvantaged communities. The Team at Grow To Know were awarded a Silver-gilt medal for their garden ‘Hands Off Mangrove’ – which is currently in development to be moved into the wider community for everyone to enjoy. From the Chelsea Flower Show success, the award-winning David Austen Roses named a brand-new rose, Dannahue, after Danny which was truly an honour.

Danny’s sister, Margot McLellan, was just 52 when she died of a glioblastoma (GBM), leaving a husband and young daughter. Motivated by his own family’s devastation, Danny became a Patron of Brain Tumour Research “so patients like Margot aren’t left with zero treatment options and their families aren’t forced to watch them suffer like she did”.

As well as supporting Wear A Hat Day for a number of years, Danny is the face of our Rose for Hope. He supports our campaigning and in 2023, joined other high-profile supporters to hand in our petition to Number 10 Downing Street. He has seen our research first-hand, having attended a lab tour at our Centre of Excellence at Queen Mary University of London, and actively raises awareness on social media including supporting our Stop the Devastation and #ShineALight campaigns.
