Was the Easter gardening rush the antidote to Brexit?
The GTN Bestsellers All Products sales index of items sold in garden centres recorded that highest level for the first Easter week since 2015. Could it be that as a nation we are using gardening and garden leisure time as an antidote to Brexit?
We have to wait until next week to see if Easter overall reaches record levels for volume sales. We’ve received many reports of record trading on Easter Monday across the country, some based on mainly gardening and plants sales, some due to a huge increase in garden furniture sales.
When we compare last week with last year, it was down by 8%. That’s because this was the first week last year that gardening and plants actually started selling after ‘The Beast from the East’ and of course the first Easter week has a day’s less trading due to Easter Sunday closing.
Are you re-stocked and ready for the May Bank Holiday? If gardening is the ideal antidote to Brexit we could be in for more bumper weeks ahead.
