Woburn Sands Garden Centre, near Milton Keynes, has announced that it is closing down, blaming “extremely challenging trading conditions” over the past few years.

The former Wyevale garden centre informed customers of its decision on its Facebook page, posting: “Recent government policies have made it almost impossible for businesses to survive. This has led to sustained financial losses, reduced customer spending, rising costs and extra tax pressures meaning the business is no longer viable. This is not a decision that has been taken lightly and it is one we make with real sadness.

“The garden centre has traded since 2019, and during that time we invested significant time and financial resources in an attempt to build a successful and sustainable operation. We explored every reasonable option to stabilise the business and sought further financial support where possible. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, continuing to trade is no longer possible.

“We are acutely aware of the impact this will have on our team and want to sincerely thank our staff, customers, and suppliers for their support over the years. This is not the outcome we wanted, but it is the difficult reality we now face.

Woburn Sands Garden Centre is currently holding a closing down sale, which started on Friday.

The social media post announcing the closure drew a response of more than 750 comments, many of which expressed sadness at the decision.

The business was originally owned by Wyevale and sold to investment and development company Rochmills Group in 2019.

RHS announces new licensed range of wild bird food

The Royal Horticultural Society has announced a new licensing agreement with Harvest Wildlife Products, a leading manufacturer of wild bird food in the UK, for a wide range of RHS-branded wild bird food using a variety of carefully prepared recipes suited to many popular breeds...

The Royal Horticultural Society has announced a new licensing agreement with Harvest Wildlife Products, a leading manufacturer of wild bird food in the UK, for a wide range of RHS-branded wild bird food using a variety of carefully prepared recipes suited to many popular breeds.

Created in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society, RHS Gourmet Wild Bird Food is a premium range of seed blends and high-energy suet treats specially developed to bring more wildlife into gardens.

Each recipe is carefully crafted with high-quality ingredients to attract a wide variety of birds, from robins and songbirds to finches and tits, at key times of the year.

This comprehensive range includes suet coconuts, blocks, pellets and fat balls in both Fruit & Nut and High Energy flavours, as well as a selection of specialist seed mixes such as Robin & Songbird Blend and Small Garden Bird Blend. All the recipes combine outstanding nutrition with industry expertise.

The packaging includes tubs and packs in a variety of sizes to suit gardens big and small, while the glorious flora and fauna illustrations used in their design are inspired by horticultural and botanical imagery from the RHS Lindley Collections, within which the RHS holds the world’s finest collection of botanical art, containing more than 30,000 superb artworks.

Sustainability also plays a key role in this range. Harvest Wildlife Products uses responsibly sourced, traceable ingredients and a unique on-site cleaning process to ensure each product is packed with goodness. Suet products are all enhanced with human-grade beef tallow, a high-quality, readily digestible fat source which is rich in essential vitamins and sourced from British farms.

The company offers recyclable packaging wherever possible and actively reduces its carbon footprint through smarter logistics and transport optimisation.

Following very positive previews at Glee, the UK's leading outdoor home and garden trade show, and the Pets and Aquatics Trade Show (PATS), both of which took place in September at the NEC, the new range arrived in a number of selected retailers, including garden centres, pet shops and wholesaler stores, across the UK and online, in January. Wider distribution will take place in the coming months.

Headquartered in rural Lincolnshire, Harvest Wildlife Products is a leading British manufacturer of high-quality wild bird food, with over 125 years of expertise.

Its complete range of nutritious options that benefit UK garden birds is supported by the company’s website resources that include advice on understanding the right bird food and feeding techniques, helping customers to choose the perfect bird feeders and wild bird seed mixes to attract and nourish wild birds safely and effectively.

Investment in state-of-the-art technology enables efficient year-round production. The company has achieved certifications from food safety and quality certification programme BRCGS and Sedex, a global technology company that specialises in empowering supply chain sustainability.

Matt Bryant, CEO of Harvest Wildlife Products, says: “At Harvest, our commitment to providing the best for wild birds is rooted in our core values – values we share with the UK’s favourite gardening charity. We’re delighted to have worked with the RHS on these ranges and we’re sure that retailers, customers and, of course, wild birds, will love them.”

Cathy Snow, Licensing Manager, RHS, adds: “The RHS always aspires to enhance the joy people experience in their gardens. That’s why developing RHS-branded wild bird food blends and treats specially developed to bring more wildlife into gardens was a very attractive proposition – and working with one of the leading manufacturer of wildlife products in the UK has been a perfect way to make that happen!”

Engineering for peat-free production

To reduce its environmental impact, a UK based manufacturer of composts and growing substrates, wanted to expand its peat-free product range. To achieve this, it turned to Technidrive, a specialist supplier of motors and drives, to engineer the system that would make it possible...

Peat extracted for horticulture  has the potential to release approximately 880,000 tonnes of CO2 in a single year — the equivalent emissions of driving to the moon and back 4,600 times, according to The Wildlife Trusts. To reduce its environmental impact, a UK based manufacturer of composts and growing substrates, wanted to expand its peat-free product range. To achieve this, it turned to Technidrive, a specialist supplier of motors and drives, to engineer the system that would make it possible.

Peat has long been a component in horticultural products, especially in potting mixes and composts for its water retention and nutrient properties. However, peat extraction contributes to the destruction of valuable ecosystems, releasing carbon and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

In fact, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, responsible for these sectors in Northern Ireland, has highlighted the potential negative effects of peat cutting. This includes the direct loss of biodiversity and negative effects on the hydrological system leading to localised flooding and repercussions on a national level due to the depletion of a significant carbon store.

The challenge

To produce eco-friendly alternatives of its growing products and mix substrates, the manufacturer began investigating peat-free wood-based material possibilities. Wood chips can be added to a compost pile to provide a better carbon nitrogen ratio and, with their rigid structure, also enhance the flow of air through the compost since they are less prone to compact.

Wood chip is a common byproduct of tree trimming and landscaping, which meant that the manufacturer could improve its sustainable practices by leaning on waste wood byproducts from local sawmills in Ireland, as opposed to importing the product.

As an alternative, it chose to invest in its own processing facility, by creating a brand-new wood fibre processing plant. The goal was to ensure its own supply of this material and significantly extend its peat-free range of products.

Technidrive was brought in to support with the creation of a complete system for the wood fibre processing plant. The set-up was required to transport wood chip to the feed bin, transfer it to a primary conveyor and pass it through the bottom extruder, before it emerged from the offload conveyors. This process can be compared to pressing modelling clay through a mould — the extruder shapes the wood chip into fine fibres resembling pulled pork, which are then blended into different compost products.

The primary challenge involved synchronising the system’s speed and feed rates with the  extruder’s operational capacity. Moisture levels, density and particle size of the raw wood could all vary, requiring precise torque and speed control throughout the process.

A key specification was that the equipment needed to transition smoothly from a low-frequency operation at 5 Hertz (Hz) to a significantly higher 100 Hz.  This was made possible by WEG's advanced technology in Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) using Optimal Flux technology, which allows the system to deliver 100 per cent torque at frequencies as low as 5Hz, without requiring external forced cooling.

This shift was crucial to ensure better control over the speed of process. Achieving this demanded meticulous evaluation of the extruder’s adaptability to changing conditions.

Product selection

Technidrive took a strategic approach to product selection. As a WEG Premier Partner and a BEST Partner of Italian motor manufacturer, Bonfiglioli, Technidrive had an impressive portfolio of products to choose from. For this project, WEG IE3 motors were chosen and fitted to Bonfiglioli Gearboxes.

Technidrive carried out calculations for power and speed and opted for two 0.25kW geared motors with a combined gear reduction of 6881:1 using High Efficiency Pre-Stage Helical and final output Bevel Helical Gear units. As a result, this led to a very low speed of 0.2 RPM but with a very high torque. This ensured a low and constant flow of product onto the main conveyor.

Lastly, two more Bonfiglioli gearboxes were also installed onto two large bins, each of which holds six tons of wood chip for the overall process. The gearboxes act as material beaters, creating a uniform flow of product onto the main conveyor.

“The project is a fantastic example of our team’s engineering knowledge,” explained Johnathan Johnston, internal sales and project engineer at Technidrive. “The state-of-the-art facility has been engineered with the best possible products from our industrial partners, ensuring the plant can manufacture environmentally friendly products in a smart and efficient way.”

Achieving sustainability

With a strategic blend of WEG products and Bonfiglioli components, the result was a system that aligns with the manufacturers goal to prioritise eco-friendly practices. IE3 rated motors with premium efficiency, resulted in energy savings and reduced operating costs but also, importantly, reduced CO2 emissions due to low power consumption.

Investing in a brand-new wood fibre processing plant, installed in June 2023 with production fully underway that same month, was a key part of the manufacturers sustainability journey.

The investment in the new wood fibre plant is a step forward in the manufacturer’s sustainability initiative. By reducing its reliance on peat and making greater use of locally sourced wood byproducts, the company is lowering its carbon footprint while supporting the regional economy. The installation supports the production of a wider range of peat-reduced and entirely peat-free growing media.

The new wood fibre processing facility will enable the manufacturer to produce greener and more sustainable composts and growing materials for years into the future.

HTA sets out 2026 events programme

The Horticultural Trades Association has announced its 2026 calendar of events, with returning industry-wide flagship events, regular webinars and member-focused regional events, building on last year’s success...

The Horticultural Trades Association has announced its 2026 calendar of events, with returning industry-wide flagship events, regular webinars and member-focused regional events, building on last year’s success.

The Garden Press Event kicks off the start of the physical events programme on 17 February at the Business Design Centre in London. Now in its twentieth year, this must-attend diary date for press and media professionals, in collaboration with GIMA, attracts hundreds of members of the garden press and media each year.

The first round of regional events will focus on catering and will be held on various dates in February and March. Catering remains one of the strongest growth areas for garden centres. It now accounts for around 17% of total turnover (on average) and has grown year-on-year for the past three years.

The HTA regional catering events (Southeast, Southwest, Midlands and North England) will bring together garden centre, café, and restaurant teams to explore the latest trends, expert insights, and opportunities in this rapidly growing sector. Customer demand for catering at garden centres is also rising. UK adults make around 148 million visits to garden centre cafés each year, with 56% having visited one in the last 12 months.

The programme of events continues into June, with the return of the HTA’s National Plant Show to NAEC Stoneleigh. More regional events are scheduled for the Summer and into Autumn, and Horticulture, the Conference returns to the Barbican Centre in London on 24 September.

The popular Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) Cluster Meetings will also be continuing across various regions in 2026 – full details on the website here: hta.org.uk/apl/events/clusters/apl-cluster-meetings

Elia Johnston, Director of Membership and Marketing at the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), commented: “Our team works hard to create a programme of events that not only benefits our members but also offers them a chance to connect and engage with their peers while sharing their experiences and knowledge of the industry. In 2025, our events programme attracted over 4,765 visitors.

“Last year, we successfully ran 37 regional events across the UK, enabling hundreds of members to attend events close to home and engage with similar businesses in their area. The feedback we received was invaluable in shaping our 2026 programme, with catering clearly identified as a growing area of interest, which is now embedded across our regional activity.

“We know our events programme offers unparalleled opportunities to build connections and exchange best practices. It also highlights the HTA’s commitment to supporting our members and providing them with the tools and information to thrive.”

Gardenex announces Meet the Buyer opportunities

Gardenex and PetQuip rounded off 2025 with a series of highly effective Meet the Buyer events, reaffirming their long-standing value to member companies across the garden and pet sectors.

A fixture in the trade calendar, the Meet the Buyer programme once again delivered tangible results at the end of 2025, with two carefully curated events organised by the federation’s team last month.

Footprint Products Canada

Footprint Products is an importer and distributor specialising in innovative products for the lawn and garden, outdoor living, electrical and hardware sectors.

Headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, the company supplies and services customers across Canada, working with major DIY and home improvement chains including Canadian Tire, Rona and Home Depot Canada, as well as garden centre retailers such as Botanix and Sheridan Nurseries.

Over two days of online meetings hosted by Gardenex and PetQuip, representatives from Home to Garden, Strata Products, SoilWorx, Pet Rebellion, Buddycare, DotDotPet, Group 55 (Animology) and Scruffs held extremely productive discussions with Footprint Products’ CEO.

“A big thank you to Gardenex who were extremely helpful in matching my new supplier needs and arranging the meetings. Overall, it was a brilliant success and we will be introducing many new UK products into Canada as a result of their work”, commented Richard Goba, CEO Footprint Products.

Joybuy/JD.com

New to the UK, JD.com is a leading retail and technology company, listed on NASDAQ and HKEx, and is China’s largest retailer by value. Joybuy is JD.com’s new European online retail business, bringing trusted brands, high quality products and value to customers across the UK and Europe.

For consumers, Joybuy provides a one-stop shopping experience with same-day and next-day delivery. For suppliers, it offers a traditional retailer model with fast onboarding and no involvement in after-sales service or returns, allowing brands to focus on growth and expansion across European markets.

Currently in the beta/testing phase, Joybuy will formally launch in early 2026.

Last month, Gardenex and PetQuip hosted an in-person Meet the Buyer event at Joybuy’s offices in Central London. Seven meetings were held with the buyers, with VegTrug, ALM Manufacturing and SBM participating from the garden sector and Petface, Lily’s Kitchen, Ancol and Buddycare taking part from the pet industry.

“The launch of Joybuy into the UK is very exciting and we were delighted to be the first trade association to facilitate meetings with their buying team. The meetings are on course to have very positive outcomes and we look forward to offering more opportunities as Joybuy moves into its launch stage” commented Joe Denham, Director General, Gardenex and PetQuip.

Meet the Buyer opportunities in 2026

Planning is already underway for a comprehensive programme of Meet the Buyer events in 2026, featuring a mix of online and in-person opportunities, as well as hosted buyer meetings at the UK’s key trade shows.

Online meetings are currently being arranged with leading Dutch/Belgian marketplace Bol on 4 February (pet) and 5 February (garden) and with US importer/distributor Arett (garden) on 11 February.  Please contact eleanor@gardenex.com for more information and to apply for a place.

“We are putting together a regular calendar of Meet the Buyer events for the year ahead, which will give our members significant potential for business with some of the brightest and best companies in the UK and international markets” explained Joe Denham.

Small gardens with big impact at Chelsea show

A further 15 RHS Chelsea Flower Show gardens have been unveiled in the All About Plants and Balcony and Container categories, homing in on how smaller spaces can assist in the conservation of local wildlife at home, while also highlighting how our gardens can provide excellent spaces for developing our passions, interests and improving our own physical health...

A further 15 RHS Chelsea Flower Show gardens have been unveiled in the All About Plants and Balcony and Container categories, homing in on how smaller spaces can assist in the conservation of local wildlife at home, while also highlighting how our gardens can provide excellent spaces for developing our passions, interests and improving our own physical health.

In the All About Plants category, the Woodland Trust: Forgotten Forests Garden by Ashleigh Aylett will indicate to visitors how ancient woodlands are at a critical juncture for recovery. The garden will feature a transitional zone where conifers give way to a diverse, naturally regenerating woodland with incredible biodiversity, demonstrating how ancient woodlands can re-emerge from plantation sites with careful stewardship.

Showing how easy it is to grow plants that attract prey essential to bats’ diets, Melanie Hick is designing The Bat Conservation Trust’s Nocturnal Garden. Naturalistic planting will encourage small insects that bats feast on after dark, encouraging bats to enjoy gardens at night while we enjoy them in the day. ‘The Bat’ percolates to every part of the garden, including colour and shape, and even the rear boundary of the garden will be made to come apart and made into bat boxes on relocation.

Charlie Chase is looking to inspire young people and offer a restorative, purposeful community space at a time of youth mental health emergency with their YoungMinds Garden. Framed by a habitat wall that is made from stone offcuts, the garden offers enclosure whilst promoting an ecological approach to garden creation. Plant diversity throughout the garden reflects the range of experiences young people bring.

The Plant Heritage Missing Collector Garden by Sally-Anne Rees, Kate Campbell and William Murray is inspired by the idea of "The Missing Collector"; a mysterious plant enthusiast who has left behind an extraordinary plant collection. Jewel-toned plants set within lush green foliage offer visitors a rare glimpse into this treasured botanical collection while an unoccupied chair invites visitors to imagine themselves in the role of collector and guardian.

Seeking to inspire visitors to separate from technology and return to hobbies to nourish minds and wellbeing, Cleary Gottlieb: Time for Creativity by Christina Cobb creates a softer landscaped garden. A walkthrough glasshouse stocked with books, paints, papers and fabrics welcomes visitors, travelling through into a peaceful seating area with vibrant planting and seating in which they can carry out these activities.

The Balcony and Container Gardens category will also explore how our gardens can be both passions for nature and other personal interests. Featuring The Seasalt Painted Garden by Lynn James – taking from mid-century modern artists known as the St Ives School, the garden is set within a courtyard adjoining an artist’s studio. Blending bold colours with recycled materials, the garden echoes artists’ need for ingenuity and resourcefulness.

For its 140th birthday, The Whittard of Chelsea Garden by Ollie Pike will join nature and tea together to create a perfect sanctuary set in a Chelsea courtyard. Rich in fragrance and colour, the planting features many of the ingredients used in Whittard infusions. Also taking inspiration from a popular drink and taking its name from the liquid lost to evaporation during whisky aging, Fettercairn: The Angels' Share by May Starey, features grassland that moves to woodland across the balcony around a flexible space designed for sharing, reminiscent of Fettercairn’s home in the Cairngorms.

A Little Garden of Shared Knowledge sponsored by Viking by Katerina Kantalis has been thoughtfully designed for a well-travelled, retired creative couple. Serving as both a private sanctuary and a welcoming space for friends and family to share a love of gardening, with a curated selection of flowers, herbs, vegetables, and fruit arranged within a compact layout. The Transient Garden by Rebecca Lloyd Jones centres on flexibility and adaptability. This reflects the increasingly temporary and mobile nature of modern living, all elements are modular, lightweight, and designed to be moved by two people.

Focussing on how gardens can be used in aiding rehabilitation, the Alzheimer’s Society: Microbes and Minds Garden by Tina Worboys is inspired by the rural orchards of Worcestershire and Herefordshire. The garden tells the story of apple cider vinegar and its gut health benefits. At the centre of the garden is an apple tree representing ‘The Mother’ – a naturally occurring bacteria formed during fermentation. Inclusion, accessibility and belonging are the key themes of the The Sightsavers Garden: we start with sight but we don't stop there by Peter Karn, Janice Molyneux and Sarah Fisher. Natural materials, multi-sensory planting and a central wheelchair turning circle welcome all visitors, inviting them to slow down, pause, connect; and to imagine a more inclusive and sustainable world.

Inspired by the designers’ love of British hedgerows, and concern for their decline, Hedgerow in the Sky - Tech Mahindra by Sarah Mayfield and Monika Greenhough invites visitors to notice local wildlife and nurture biodiversity. Featuring a backdrop made of Shou Sugi Ban, an ancient Japanese wood preservation technique, the urban balcony creates a dark and striking shape with layered planting that mimics the structure of hedgerows. From the sky to the water, Kennedys' Independent Property Agents: Tales from the Riverbank Balcony Garden by Susie Kennedy and Kate Henning imagines a balcony as a fully functioning garden set on a floating home. As more people take to longboat living, the garden features a dipping tank, cooking area and edible plants on the boat roof.

Finally, Flood Re: Contain the Rain Garden by John Howlett is an urban inner-city garden inspired by traditional Persian, Moorish and Islamic design. Offering a tranquil space that sees sustainable and practical water management, the lush planting will keep the garden cool in hotter temperatures and the permeable surfaces with water storage will help manage excess rainwater.

Project Giving Back, the unique grant-giving charity that supports gardens for good causes at RHS Chelsea, is supporting four of this year’s All About Plants Gardens.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show runs from 19-23 May 2026 and tickets are available online at rhs.org.uk/chelsea.

British Garden Centres has announced the successful acquisition of Ferndale Garden Centre in North Derbyshire. The centre officially joined the group in early January and will now trade as Dronfield Garden Centre, bringing the group’s total number of sites to 74 and marking another significant step in the company’s ambitious growth across the UK.

Ferndale Garden Centre has been a cherished part of the Sheffield and North Derbyshire community for decades, first established in 1982. Operated by Neil and Linda Grant, and Helen Watson, the centre earned a strong reputation for high-quality plants, expert gardening advice, and friendly service. Known for its passionate team, impressive horticultural knowledge, and product offerings, as well as its popular coffee shop, Ferndale is a go-to destination for gardeners across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. Following the owners’ retirement, British Garden Centres is proud to continue their legacy and ensure the site remains at the heart of the local gardening community.

Neil Grant, Managing Director of Ferndale Garden Centre, said: “After many rewarding years building Ferndale into a thriving local hub for gardeners, Linda, Helen, and I are excited to see it join the British Garden Centres family. We have every confidence that Charles and the team will nurture the community spirit and take it to new heights as Dronfield Garden Centre.”

Charles Stubbs, Founder and Director of British Garden Centres, said: “We are thrilled to welcome the Ferndale Dronfield Garden Centre team into the British Garden Centres family. Ferndale has long been admired for its quality and community values that align perfectly with our own. We are excited that the Ferndale team will continue delivering the same excellent and even better service, plants, and products customers love. We look forward to investing in the site, supporting the team, and continuing to offer customers a truly outstanding garden centre experience.”

Neil will also continue to play an active role in the wider garden industry through his work as HTA Board Director and as Chair of the HTA Retail Committee, and will also remain a familiar voice to listeners in the Yorkshire region with his regular gardening slot on BBC Radio Sheffield, Leeds and York.

2025 was a year of expansion for British Garden Centres, highlighted by the acquisition of key sites, including former Dobbies sites (Shinfield, Gosforth, Heighley Gate, Rugby, Havant, Northampton, and Gloucester), as well as Hayes Garden World, alongside significant reinvestments in its existing operations.

The addition of Ferndale Garden Centre as Dronfield Garden Centre strengthens the group’s presence in Yorkshire and reinforces its position as the UK’s largest family-run garden centre group. British Garden Centres plans to enhance facilities in the coming months to make the centre even more enjoyable for new and returning customers.

Steve Millington, Sales Director at Tom Chambers, has decided to step down from his role as LOFA Chairman following an unexpected health issue.

Over the last two years, Steve has driven meaningful developments within the organisation, including boosting member benefits and strengthening support for the association’s work.

While Steve’s tenure was set to continue for another year, his doctors have advised that his health must now take precedence. LOFA respects this decision wholeheartedly and thanks him profoundly for the unwavering commitment and leadership he has shown.

Taking over as Chairman will be Vice Chairman Alwyn Williams, who holds the role of Sales and Customer Service Operations Manager at Zest Outdoor Living. Having collaborated closely with Steve during his leadership, Alwyn brings deep insight, steadiness, and a thoughtful strategy to this key position.

General Manager Gina Hinde commented:

“Steve was an excellent chairman – his enthusiasm for the industry and vison for progress were unmatched. He will be missed however, I’m also looking forward to working alongside Alwyn in his new capacity. His sound judgement and comprehensive knowledge of the sector mean he is perfectly placed to lead LOFA towards continued success in the year ahead.”

Alwyn commented:

“We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to Steve on behalf of LOFA. His outstanding service and dedication to this association have been truly inspiring. We wish him all the very best for his health and future well-being.”

Hosted at B&Q’s Head Office in Eastleigh, the meeting marks the second in a planned series of Buyer Connect sessions for 2026. Designed to strengthen supplier–retailer partnerships, these events provide GIMA members with direct access to senior buying teams, enabling meaningful dialogue, new commercial pathways, and accelerated growth.

Sustainability is a core focus of this Buyer Connect, with a spokesperson for B&Q outlining its current objectives by saying: “We want to make sustainable choices easier for our customers, helping them to create healthier, more sustainable homes. We’re building on our heritage of looking after people and our planet. Aligned with this ambition, B&Q is inviting innovative, sustainability-led product concepts and new category proposals. The retailer is particularly interested in hearing from GIMA members whose ranges support customers to make responsible home and garden improvements. Both stocked and dropship propositions will be reviewed.

This is an exceptional chance for members to open discussions, present their product innovations, and engage with a retailer that places sustainability at the heart of its strategy. With dropshipping also under review, the potential routes to market are broader than ever.”
