Highgrove Festival gets helping hand from nurseries

One of the UK’s leading commercial nurseries in Hereford has this month loaned a range of topical herbaceous perennials, shrubs and ferns to the Highgrove Garden Festival.
Wyevale Nurseries has provided the plants, which are representative of the traditional planting at Highgrove, to be used for displays during the Festival from April 11 until 16.
Adrian Hoare, Garden Design and Domestic Landscape Sales Manager at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “We are delighted we could help Highgrove with its plant displays for its Garden Festival next week. It looks to be a brilliant event with a range of fantastic well-known guest speakers and a plant fair. An event not to be missed.
“We have loaned the plants for display purposes but they can also be purchased by visitors during the event.
“The plants we have provided include Polmonium Heaven Scent, common name ‘Jacobs Ladder’. A pretty, airy plant with greeny-purple, fern like leaves, which form a neat mound. The blue flowers are lightly fragrant in late spring onwards. They look great in the front of borders or mixed within other garden plants. Polmonium Heaven Scent is a perfect cottage or traditional garden plant.”
Wyevale Nurseries has also supplied Dicentra spectabilis (common name ‘Bleeding Heart’) and Syringa Red Pixie (Dwarf Liliac).
Dicentra spectabilis has heart shaped rose and white flowers hanging from long arching stems throughout the spring and summer. It is suitable for any area with partial shade, such as beds, borders and containers.
Syringa Red Pixie is a delicate, compact lilac ideal for any setting from large estates to smaller gardens, even growing in containers. The plants will be smothered in deep redish-purple flower buds opening to fragrant pink blooms in late spring.
Wyevale Nurseries is one of the largest family-run wholesale nurseries in the UK. It was established in 1930 by Harry Williamson, a horticulturist and entrepreneur. It became the company it is today under the leadership of his son, Peter, who sadly passed away in 2011.
The Williamsons’ saw the opportunity to sell their product to an undeveloped retail market, creating one of the first garden centres, followed by a chain. In 1987, the retail side needed to expand and the 19 garden centres were sold as a PLC.
The family then turned its focus to Wyevale Nurseries Ltd. It continues to be a family-run business with ownership and joint chairmanship currently being held by the third generation, Heather and Simeon Williamson, with plans for the fourth generation to takeover in the future.
Wyevale Nurseries has a significant product range and is regularly introducing new plants. It offers a large variety of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants to garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners.
