Zero-Hours Reform: Why smarter workforce planning could become essential for garden centres
GTN Xtra Promotion

WorkForce Manager's AI-powered SMART Rota has been developed specifically for garden centres and nurseries. By considering employee availability, skills, contracts, holidays, compliance requirements, planned events and even weather forecasts, it helps managers place the right people in the right place at the right time, while maintaining control of labour costs...

The way garden centres manage flexible workers could soon face significant change.
In its response to the Government's consultation on reforms to zero-hours and similar contracts, the Horticultural Trades Association highlighted the unique workforce challenges faced by environmental horticulture. Seasonal demand, changing weather conditions, hospitality operations, student workers and fluctuating customer footfall all combine to create staffing pressures unlike those seen in traditional retail.
With proposals including guaranteed hours based on historic working patterns and greater obligations around shift management, maintaining flexibility while ensuring compliance is likely to become increasingly important.
For many Garden Centres, this raises an important question: do existing workforce planning processes provide the visibility and control needed for a more regulated employment environment?
Managing rotas through spreadsheets, paper schedules and disconnected systems can make it difficult to track working patterns, employee availability, skills, compliance requirements and labour costs. At the same time, managers are expected to respond quickly to changing demand driven by weather, seasonal peaks and local events.
This is where technology can help.
Skyline WorkForce Manager's AI-powered SMART Rota has been developed specifically for Garden Centres and Nurseries. By considering employee availability, skills, contracts, holidays, compliance requirements, planned events and even weather forecasts, it helps managers place the right people in the right place at the right time, while maintaining control of labour costs.
As workforce regulations evolve, better workforce planning isn't just about compliance. It's about protecting margins, maintaining customer service and making informed staffing decisions with confidence.
Visit us on Stand 17H30 at Glee (8-10 September) to see Skyline WorkForce Manager in action and discover how smarter workforce planning can help your Garden Centre stay ahead of coming workforce challenges.

Garden care manufacturer marks milestone anniversary after eight decades of supporting British gardeners and retail partners.
Doff, the Nottingham-based brand, is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2026, marking eight decades of providing practical garden care products to generations of British gardeners.
Founded in 1946 by Stanley Whyatt, the business began as Portland (Distributors) Limited, selling bulb bowls at a local market during a period when gardening and food growing played an important role in post-war Britain.
The company expanded steadily, moving into its first production unit in 1952 before relocating to the Midland Railway Goods Shed in Nottingham. It was there that Doff developed its first slug pellet, helping establish a product category that remains central to the business today.
Over the following decades, Doff grew alongside the changing face of British garden retail. As home gardening became increasingly popular and garden centres transformed the way consumers shopped for garden products, the company continued to develop its range while investing in manufacturing capability and retail support.
Today, Doff products are available through national retailers, independent garden centres and online channels across the UK.
Richard Reihl, Commercial Director for Doff, said: "Reaching 80 years is a milestone that very few businesses achieve. We are incredibly proud of the role Doff has played in helping generations of gardeners care for and enjoy their outdoor spaces.
"While the gardening market has evolved significantly since 1946, our focus remains the same: providing practical, reliable products that offer gardeners real value and confidence. We are also grateful for the support of our retail partners, many of whom have worked with us for many years and have been an important part of our journey."
Pelsis will continue its 80th anniversary celebrations at Glee this September, where the team will showcase the latest additions to its product portfolio alongside some of its most trusted brands. Visitors to the stand will be able to discover new product developments while exploring the company's 80-year heritage of innovation in pest control and garden care.
Doff Portland is part of the Pelsis Group.

HTA calls for the government to reset its approach to drought and water resilience

Reservoir at HTA Member Allensmore Nurseries.
The Horticultural Trades Association is calling on the Government to move away from reactive drought management and instead focus on year-round water resilience planning, backed by practical support. This, in turn, will help horticultural businesses invest in water storage, recycling, and efficient irrigation.
In a letter to Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle MP, HTA Chief Executive Fran Barnes has urged ministers to reset the National Drought Group as a permanent National Water Resilience Group that meets year-round to plan for future water security, whatever the weather.
The call comes as the HTA publishes the findings of its 2025 Water Consumption & Resilience Survey, which shows water use among professional growers and garden centres accounts for less than 0.2% of the UK's total water consumption, yet 88% of businesses say restrictions on mains or abstracted water would seriously harm or threaten the survival of their business.
The HTA says recent government action, including the COBR meeting on drought and weekly meetings of the National Drought Group, has been welcome in responding to immediate pressures. It also welcomed the reopening of the Water Management Grant and the commitment to publish clearer planning guidance for reservoirs in September. However, the Association says these measures must also work for environmental horticulture and form part of a permanent, year-round approach to water resilience rather than seasonal crisis management.
This summer's drought has highlighted the consequences of the current approach, with some horticultural businesses facing cancelled orders and lost stock, while others continue to face barriers to investing in reservoirs and other resilience measures.
Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the Horticultural Trades Association, said: “We cannot keep treating drought as a crisis that we manage when it arrives and then move on when the rain comes. Drought is the symptom. Water resilience is the solution – and we need to plan for it all year round.
“This summer has made the consequences very clear. Businesses are losing orders and stock, while those trying to invest in reservoirs, rainwater harvesting and other resilience measures can face significant barriers.
“That is why we are calling for the National Drought Group to be reset as a National Water Resilience Group – one that meets all year round, whatever the weather, and has the focus and urgency to deliver long-term water security.”
The HTA’s research also shows businesses are already investing in resilience. Among the growers surveyed, 32% now obtain water from alternative sources to mains or abstraction, such as rainwater or greywater recycling, compared with 8% in 2020. However, average water storage capacity is only 16% of annual consumption for growers and 20% for garden centres.
The findings show that horticulture is a low-consumption, high-risk sector: it uses a very small proportion of the UK's water, but relies on secure access to water to keep plants alive and businesses operating.
Fran Barnes added: “Our members are already taking action. Growers have significantly increased their use of rainwater and recycled water, while businesses across the sector are investing in efficient irrigation, storage and water-saving technologies.
“But businesses cannot build resilience alone. The cost of infrastructure is high, and planning, funding and regulatory barriers can stand in the way. We should be planning now for how we will capture, store, and manage water in the future.
“The message from horticulture is clear: we want to be part of the solution.
“This summer should be the point at which we stop asking how we manage the next drought and start asking how we make the UK resilient to the next decade of climate volatility.
“We are ready to work with the government to make that happen.”
The HTA is calling for four changes to the UK's approach to water:
1. Reset the conversation from crisis response to long-term resilience
Replace the National Drought Group with a permanent National Water Resilience Group that meets year-round to plan for future water needs and long-term water security.
2. Improve public messaging and water advice
Work with the environmental horticulture sector to provide practical, consistent advice on water efficiency and to improve public understanding of Temporary Use Bans (TUBs), including clearer, more consistent interpretation of restrictions and exemptions. The HTA recently raised concerns with the Water Minister after guidance issued by water companies this summer created uncertainty over what activities were permitted.
3. Remove barriers to on-site water storage
Remove unnecessary barriers to investing in reservoirs, rainwater harvesting, and other on-site water storage, while ensuring that water storage is considered in new development. On-site reservoirs were among the measures most in demand among growers according to the survey findings, with cost and space as key barriers.
The HTA has since welcomed the government's commitment to publish clearer planning guidance for reservoirs in September and is calling for this to support horticultural businesses as well as other water-dependent sectors.
4. Partner with and back UK environmental horticulture
Design grants and planning guidance so environmental horticulture can invest in reservoirs, rainwater capture, recycling and efficient irrigation. The sector has the expertise to improve water resilience through measures such as plant selection, sustainable landscape design, and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), which reduce runoff and ease pressure on drainage infrastructure.
The HTA is seeking an urgent meeting with Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle MP to discuss how the government can work with environmental horticulture and other water-dependent sectors to develop a long-term approach to water resilience.

Industry experts, leading political figures, a meteorologist, an economist, and experts in global foresight, communication, and organisational behaviour make up the speaker lineup for the Horticultural Trades Association’s Horticulture, The Conference, later this month.
One of the industry’s annual flagship gatherings, Horticulture, The Conference aims to inform and support environmental horticulture businesses as they prepare for the future. Held at London’s iconic Barbican Centre on Thursday 24 September 2026, this year’s conference will feature insightful discussions from keynote speakers and experts, covering diverse topics such as the value of green spaces; how climate change is impacting the sector; emerging risks, opportunities, and new trends; and how businesses can create connection across generations and teams.
The Speakers and Sessions
The day will start with a forward look covering global trends through to our economic and political environment, in Signals from the Future. Pippa Goodman, a leading expert in global foresight from NextUp, will cover an in-depth look at sociological, technological, legal and environmental trends, emerging risks, as well as the opportunities and what they mean for the future of UK environmental horticulture businesses.
The second part of the session will feature economist Matthew Swannell, Associate Director at Oxford Economics. With over two decades of experience in economic forecasting and policy analysis, Matthew will explore the current state of the UK economy, key economic indicators to watch over the short and medium term, and their implications for environmental horticulture. As part of Unpacking the Economy: the headwinds and tailwinds set to affect horticulture, he will also examine likely trends in consumer and public spending, labour market conditions, and how these are likely to affect opportunities and risks for the industry.
After the break, Laura Loveridge and Samantha Smith – The HTA’s Market Research Manager & Policy and Public Affairs Manager - will launch The Value of Green Spaces, the third report in the HTA’s ‘Value of’ series. Drawing on new public polling and evidence from across the UK, the report demonstrates how green spaces can help tackle extreme heat, flooding and pressure on the NHS, while supporting healthier communities, biodiversity and economic growth. It also highlights inequalities in access to green space and sets out an eight-point action plan for the government to better protect, expand, fund and integrate green infrastructure.
The environmental theme continues with Creating the Climate for Green Spaces, featuring broadcast meteorologist and Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society Laura Tobin, who will deliver the opening address. With her expertise and dedication to weather and climate science, she will offer insights into our future climate. Laura will then join a panel discussion alongside Baroness Natalie Bennett, Green Party Peer who holds an Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) Fellowship in Horticulture, and Jonathan Whittemore, Commercial and Business Manager at Johnsons Nurseries Ltd and chair of the HTA’s Ornamentals Management Committee. This panel of leading voices from politics, horticulture and meteorology will be moderated by Jennifer Pheasey, the HTA’s Director of Policy and Public Affairs, and will explore how green infrastructure can help the UK adapt to a changing climate, build resilience and improve our quality of life.
After lunch, the second half of the day kicks off with an insightful session, Employment & People - Generations at Work, with the keynote address from Dr Anthony Klotz – Professor of Organisational Behaviour at the UCL School of Management in London. Anthony will explore the forces reshaping today’s workforce, from evolving employee expectations and engagement challenges to workplace culture and retention. He will share practical insights on creating more sustainable, fulfilling workplaces and building a workforce equipped to thrive.
Anthony will then join an In conversation with… Hosted by Fran Barnes, the HTA’s Chief Executive. This session will blend external expertise with sector‑specific insight, covering topics such as what Gen Z expects, what older generations need, and how the sector’s business culture can evolve. The other speakers will be Shazia Ejaz, Director of Campaigns at the Recruitment and Employment Federation (REC) and Henil Vashi, Horticultural Advisor at Robin Tacchi Plants.
Shazia has experience in government communications, management consultancy, and a range of business and political campaigns. She has led on campaigns to tackle skills shortages, champion flexible work, and promote inclusive recruitment. Henil contributes to production across multiple nursery sites, supports staff development and innovation, and is passionate about the industry's future and creating opportunities for the next generation. Recognised for his contribution to the future of ornamental horticulture, Henil was named HTA Young Grower Under 35 in 2024 and Young International Grower of the Year by AIPH in 2026.
Delegates will then hear from leading political figures: Jenny Riddell-Carpenter MP, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and Conservative MP Robbie Moore, Shadow Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, who will reflect on the value and importance of environmental horticulture in individual political updates.
Rounding off the day will be Ben Hanlin, who will close the conference with his keynote speech. As an award-winning speaker who helps businesses boost performance through better communication and stronger human connection, Ben will engage and energise delegates and leave a lasting impression.
Elia Johnston, Director of Membership and Marketing at the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), said:
“Delegates are in for a treat this year, with what I believe to be our strongest lineup yet. It is important for us to create a programme that features a wide range of guest speakers who can cover a full spectrum of topics, such as our changing climate, the value of green spaces, and the trends and opportunities for businesses that can support future growth.
“We take pride in the opportunities we provide for our delegates to network with colleagues from across the sector, and we are confident that this year’s programme will inform, entertain, and support environmental horticulture businesses while inspiring them to take action and continue to thrive."
Later that evening, a celebratory dinner, hosted by comedian and broadcaster Ed Byrne, in the Barbican’s Garden Room, will recognise excellence and innovation across UK environmental horticulture. (Tickets sold separately). Winners of the prestigious HTA Grower of the Year Awards will be announced, and one person will be awarded the Pearson Memorial Medal, honouring their special contribution to the industry.

Wyevale Nurseries’ 2027 promotional catalogue aimed at retailers has launched officially this week featuring an abundance of new introductions and a section dedicated to its Climate Champions.
The leading commercial grower has this season unveiled its catalogue, featuring its very best tried and tested promotional plants, so garden centre and retail buyers can plan ahead for 2027.
Managing Director at Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford, Andy Johnson, explains: “Our new full colour printed and digital catalogue is available now on request and includes 19 new British-grown introductions for garden centres to stock to help drive customer interest and meet demand, while also assisting with boosting footfall and sales next year.
“During the past 12 months, we have been working hard on consolidating our range and focusing production on the very best varieties we know will appeal to gardeners and will perform well. Our dedicated trials area allows us to assess new varieties and production regimes to ensure we deliver the best to market.”
The 19 new promotions added to Wyevale Nurseries’ catalogue for 2027 are:
- Anisodontea Carnival Lights Candy Apple
- Colquhounia coccinea Nepalese Flame
- Echinacea SunSeekers Clementine
- Geum Banana Daiquiri
- Lavandula stoechas Bella Toscane
- Lavatera Lilla Twirl
- Lavatera Marshmallow Ice White
- Lewisia cotyledon Sunset Glow
- Liatris spicata Cobalus
- Libertia Taupo Sunset
- Parahebe catarractae Blue Avalanche
- Pittosporum tenuifolium Dark Diva
- Pittosporum tenuifolium Snow Leopard
- Pulmonaria Shrimps on the Barbie
- Pulmonaria Tresta Sky
- Rosmarinus officinalis Whitewater Silver
- Salvia microphylla Hot Lips
- Salvia Tropicolour Sunrise
- Tiarella Jeepers Creepers.

Andy adds: “We anticipate and understand the ever-changing marketplace and are always looking at emerging trends, such as the garden designs at Chelsea, which this year featured naturalistic planting, climate resilience, wildlife support, water management and productive planting, creating gardens that work for both people and nature.
“Our new introductions for 2027 reflect exactly what consumers are looking for. Plants such as Anisodontea Carnival Lights Candy Apple, Libertia Taupo Sunset and Salvia Tropicolour Sunrise offer outstanding garden performance, long seasons of interest and excellent resilience, while varieties including Pulmonaria Shrimps on the Barbie and Liatris Cobalus provide valuable benefits for pollinating insects.
“A major new feature in the catalogue this year is our Climate Champions section. Gardeners increasingly want plants that not only look beautiful but also support biodiversity, cope with changing weather patterns and contribute positively to the environment. By identifying Climate Champion varieties, we’re helping retailers make it easier for customers to choose varieties that are tough, reliable and sustainable.”
The new Climate Champions section highlights plants selected for their contribution to biodiversity, pollinator support, carbon sequestration, drought tolerance, air quality improvement and water management. Featured varieties include Agapanthus, Ceanothus, Lavender, Nepeta, Perovskia, Phormium and Salvia.
Andy continues: “Climate resilience is now one of the biggest considerations for gardeners. Whether it’s hotter summers, periods of drought or creating wildlife-friendly spaces, gardeners want confidence that their plants will thrive. The Climate Champion collection gives retailers a compelling story to tell while helping customers make environmentally responsible choices.”
Within the catalogue, Wyevale Nurseries’ Garden Centre Sales Executive, Lisa Ashford, has selected a plant from the new introductions as her top choice for 2027.
She says: “I’ve chosen Pulmonaria Shrimps on the Barbie as my Top Pick for 2027. With rich coral to shrimp-pink flowers and attractive foliage that looks like it has been splashed with silver, it’s a real standout variety. Flowering from March, it brings welcome early colour to the garden, brightens shady areas and provides an important nectar source for pollinators emerging after winter. It’s exactly the sort of hard-working plant gardeners are looking for.”
Colin Stanley, Retail Sales Manager at Wyevale Nurseries, says his top pick for 2027 is another new addition to the range and a statement plant, Miscanthus Lady in Red.
He explains: “The dramatic foliage colours, compact habit and outstanding late-season interest make it an instant eye-catcher. As gardens increasingly need resilient plants that can cope with drier conditions while still delivering impact, this variety ticks all the boxes for retailers and gardeners alike.”
Wyevale Nurseries supplies garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners with a comprehensive array of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants.
Andy concludes: “We’re an award-winning supplier to UK garden centres and are proud members of the Garden Centre Association and Horticultural Trades Association. Our highly experienced and knowledgeable retail team works closely with retailers to help deliver their needs, including putting together tailor-made packages.
“Our 2027 catalogue brings together exciting new introductions, proven best sellers, sustainability messaging and expert retail insight. We’re confident it will help our customers create inspiring displays and drive strong plant sales throughout the year.”

As consumers continue to seek design-led home accessories that balance style, sustainability and affordability, elho is expanding its indoor offering with the launch of dune – a contemporary planter collection designed to help retailers capitalise on the growing demand for elevated plant styling.
Available in warm anthracite, mushroom beige and linen white, the dune collection embraces the neutral colour palettes and tactile finishes forecast to dominate interiors throughout 2026 and beyond. Inspired by natural textures, the range offers retailers a versatile, trend-led option that complements a wide variety of houseplants while appealing to shoppers looking to recreate premium interior looks at an accessible price point.
With six sizes ranging from 14cm to 30cm, dune caters to everything from smaller gift purchases to statement indoor plants, allowing retailers to merchandise the range across multiple departments and customer budgets. Lightweight, waterproof and highly durable, the planters are also made from recycled materials, making them up to six times more sustainable than the average ceramic pot - combining strong environmental credentials with everyday practicality.
Alongside dune, elho has also introduced its ripple floor protectors, creating a simple cross-selling opportunity that adds value to every planter purchase. Available in a contemporary beige finish and sizes from 12.7cm to 30cm, ripple offers discreet protection against scratches and water damage while helping shield plant roots from the effects of underfloor heating.
Designed with retail in mind, the floor protectors feature clear price points and shelf-ready packaging for easy merchandising, helping retailers increase basket spend through straightforward add-on purchases.
Together, dune and ripple provide retailers with a complete indoor plant styling solution that reflects today's key interior trends while delivering the quality, sustainability and functionality consumers increasingly expect. By combining affordable premium design with practical accessories, the collection is well positioned to drive both shopper engagement and incremental sales throughout the peak autumn and winter houseplant season.

Doors open on Sunday to Autumn Fair

The doors to Autumn Fair 2026 open this Sunday, bringing the retail industry together at the NEC Birmingham for four days of product discovery, buying, networking and practical business insight at one of the most commercially important moments in the retail calendar...

The doors to Autumn Fair 2026 open this Sunday, bringing the retail industry together at the NEC Birmingham for four days of product discovery, buying, networking and practical business insight at one of the most commercially important moments in the retail calendar.
From Sunday until 9th September, buyers can discover new collections and proven bestsellers across Gift, Home, Fashion, Beauty & Wellbeing, Greetings, Kids, Toys & Play, Jewellery & Watch, Fashion Accessories, Food & Drink, and Retail Services, with the show providing a crucial opportunity to make final buying decisions, react to what is selling and refresh ranges ahead of the Golden Quarter.
This year the opportunity becomes even bigger. Glee joins Autumn Fair on 8th – 9th September, creating a combined buying event spanning home, gift, fashion, garden and outdoor living. Across the two shows, more than 1,250 exhibitors, 500,000+ products and 20,000+ buyers will come together at the NEC, opening up significant new cross-buying opportunities for retailers looking beyond their traditional categories.
It is an audience with real buying power: 80% of the combined Autumn Fair and Glee audience has purchasing power, while 70% operates physical stores, bringing together department stores, multiples, independents, garden centres, visitor attractions, online businesses and specialist retailers.
Matthew Mein, Event Director at Autumn Fair & Glee, said: “There is a fantastic energy around Autumn Fair this year. Retail is changing quickly, and we’ve really thought about how the show can help buyers respond, whether that’s discovering an emerging brand, getting practical advice for their business, exploring new technology or seeing completely new ways to reach customers. There’s a huge amount for retailers to experience over the four days, alongside the thousands of products and collections they come here to discover. And with Glee joining us from Tuesday, there are even more opportunities to explore categories they might not traditionally buy into. We can’t wait to welcome the industry through the doors.”
Newness takes centre stage
For retailers searching for their next bestseller, newness is one of the biggest stories of Autumn Fair 2026, with more than 25% of brands new to the show and over 30% exhibiting exclusively at Autumn Fair.
Across the show floor, buyers will find an extensive mix of established industry leaders, returning favourites and emerging businesses spanning every major retail category.
Among the brands bringing fresh inspiration to the show floor are Widdop & Co, Gift Republic, Puckator, Gingko Design, Warmies, Chalk, Pacific Lifestyle, Malini, Hill Interiors, Forever England, Lighthouse Clothing, Powder Design, Gold Trip, Evolve Organic Beauty, The English Soap Company, Bomb Cosmetics, Wild Spirit Sportswear and adhock, spanning everything from fashion and jewellery to interiors, gifting, beauty, wellbeing and sustainable home fragrance.
Gift also brings together leading names including Joe Davies, Chalk UK, Lesser & Pavey, Richard Lang & Sons, Kikkerland, University Games, Anjica and Candlelight Products, alongside a wave of new exhibitors and emerging designers.
The Home destination showcases everything from occasional furniture and textiles to decorative accessories, artisan homeware, premium gifts and outdoor living, with Home, Living & Décor sitting alongside the carefully curated The Summer House with Bronte by Moon, Biggie Best, Casa Verde, Culinary Concepts, DM Brands, Edge Company, The Otters Brook Collection, Inis, Freckleface Home Fragrance, JJ Textile, Nordic Style, and Pacific Lifestyle. When Glee opens on Tuesday, the destination will flow into garden and outdoor living to create a more seamless indoor/outdoor buying journey.
Fashion meanwhile offers independent retailers an important second buying opportunity, with womenswear, menswear, footwear, jewellery, bags and accessories enabling buyers to top up, react to what's selling and add newness once the season is underway, rather than relying solely on decisions made months earlier. Look out for Lighthouse Clothing, Weird Fish, Powder Design, Gold Trip, Pineapple Island, Oxford Blue, Nina Murati, Tretorn, Carol C Collections, Gini London, Nomads, and Eighth Hour.
Discover the next bestseller
For retailers, discovering what’s new, what’s next and who is emerging is one of the most valuable reasons to visit Autumn Fair. With consumers constantly looking for something different, independent retailers need products that help them refresh their offer, create reasons to visit and differentiate from the competition.
At the heart of this discovery are the newly renamed Product Pavilions, dedicated destinations designed to spotlight emerging brands, fresh product launches and retail-ready innovations across Gift, Home, Beauty & Wellbeing, Greetings, Party & Celebration and Fashion. From sustainable and purpose-led products to wellness, experiential gifting and innovative new concepts, the Product Pavilions give buyers a focused route to the brands and ideas that could become their next bestsellers, while buyers looking for proven innovation can head to the Gift of the Year Showcase, featuring winners of The Giftware Association's Gift of the Year 2026 Awards.
New for 2026 is Food & Drink, bringing gourmet gifting and edible treats onto the show floor from brands including Spice Kitchen, The Chocolate Gift Company, Cocoba Chocolate, Joypots, Treat Kitchen and Lakrids by Bülow, with a dedicated tasting station allowing buyers to sample products before placing orders.
Follow the Trend Trails
Helping buyers make the most of their time on the show floor, Autumn Fair’s Trend Trails provide an easy way to identify suppliers aligned with key retail opportunities and sourcing priorities. Look out for the dedicated Trend Trail symbols in the Show Guide highlighting exhibitors across Made in the UK, Licensed Product, White Label, Export Ready, B Corp Certified and Also on Faire, making it easier for buyers to find relevant businesses, discover new suppliers and shop with intent.
Some of retail's biggest buyers head to Birmingham
The show opens with an impressive line-up of retailers and buying organisations registered to attend, including John Lewis, Tesco, Next, Fortnum & Mason, Sainsbury's Argos, Mamas & Papas, The Range, Joules, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, National Trust, British Museum, TJX, Morrisons, Waitrose, Blue Diamond, Paper Tiger and Scribbler, alongside thousands of independent retailers from across the UK.
For buyers, September provides a particularly valuable opportunity to source reactively. Independent retailers are increasingly buying later, looking for greater flexibility and seeking distinctive products without overcommitting too far in advance, making Autumn Fair an important opportunity to top up proven sellers, discover ready-to-ship stock and identify products capable of driving sales through Christmas and into early 2027.
Fashion's next big names step into the spotlight
Product discovery moves from the stands to the stage on Sunday morning with the first Pitch Live competition of Autumn Fair 2026.
At 11am, emerging Fashion, Accessories & Jewellery brands will pitch their products live in a Dragons' Den-style session on the Counter Talks Stage, hosted by former M&S, Next and Tesco buyer and Retail Huddle founder Ami Rabheru.
The judging panel includes fashion designer Jeff Banks, Estella Arroyo, Head of Design at George at Asda, and Sharon Good, Founder and Managing Director of Good Results PR, giving buyers a fast-track opportunity to discover potential future retail stars.
Pitch Live continues with Home & Gift on Monday followed by Toy, Play & Kids Clothing on Tuesday.
Come for the products, stay for the knowledge
Pitch Live is just the start of an extensive four-day programme on the new Counter Talks Stage, created to give retailers free, practical insight they can take back to their businesses.
Across the show, experts from Google, Faire, Retail Huddle, BIRA, Buy Women Built, George at ASDA, Buying & Beyond, Licensing International and more will tackle everything from AI, digital growth and social commerce to retail crime, visual merchandising, licensing, buying, customer loyalty and consumer trends.
Alongside the stage programme, retailers can access complimentary 30-minute 1-to-1 Mentor Sessions in The Clubhouse, receiving personalised advice from experts including John Abbate, Samantha Gibbs of Nest, and Buying & Beyond founders Katy Norton and Lynsey Abbott on issues ranging from buying and merchandising to store design, sales and commercial strategy.
A new Clubhouse for buyers – and live commerce comes to the show floor
The Clubhouse in Hall 9 provides a dedicated members' retreat for buyers, offering a space to meet, network and recharge between appointments, alongside exclusive events, workshops and complimentary amenities.
This year it will also become a working live commerce studio through Autumn Fair's new partnership with Whatnot. Throughout the show, visitors can watch experienced Whatnot sellers go live, see products being showcased and sold in real time and speak directly to the team about how live selling could help their own businesses reach new customers and build communities.
On Monday 7 September, the Whatnot Takeover After Party from 4pm–8pm, offers buyers and exhibitors the opportunity to go live themselves with one-to-one support from the Whatnot team, alongside food, drinks and a DJ.
AI changes the way buyers navigate the show
Technology is also transforming the buying experience this year, with Autumn Fair and Glee partnering with Alibaba.com's Accio as Official Agentic AI Partner.
The free AI-powered event assistant has been designed to help buyers find relevant products and brands, create personalised exhibitor shortlists, plan efficient routes around the show and build tailored agendas. Buyers can even upload an image of their shop, display or window and ask the technology to recommend exhibitors and products suited to their retail style and customer demographic.
Autumn Fair has also partnered exclusively with Faire, bringing physical and digital wholesale buying together so retailers can discover products in person at the show before using Faire's online marketplace to continue buying year-round.
Autumn Fair puts the future of Britain's high streets on the agenda
As thousands of independent retailers come together in Birmingham, Autumn Fair is also using the show to build momentum behind a national campaign calling for a minimum of 90 minutes' free parking in town and city centres across England.
The campaign, Support Free Parking. Back Local Businesses. Bring People Back, centres on a Parliamentary petition calling for parking to be recognised as part of a wider strategy to increase footfall, support independent businesses and strengthen local economies. The campaign follows findings from Voices of Retail, produced by Spring & Autumn Fair in partnership with Faire, which revealed that 38% of independent retailers believe free parking would have the greatest positive impact on their business, while 63% of consumers say free parking would encourage them to visit town and city centres more often.
Visitors will see the campaign brought to life across Autumn Fair, with opportunities to scan a QR code and sign the petition throughout the show.
Autumn Fair takes place at the NEC Birmingham from 6–9 September 2026. Glee takes place from 8–10 September, co-located with Autumn Fair on 8–9 September.

Garland Products’ sales agent for the South-east of the UK, James Worby Agencies, has won the 2026 ‘Sales Agent of the Year’ award.
The yearly sales points for James Worby matched those of Tony Robson (North-west region) but James took the award after a count-back on the final month’s sales. It is the second time that James and his team have received the award, having previously won in 2021.
Third place went Tim Stevenson & the Stevenson Agencies in Ireland, who beat out Adam Banks (South-west region) on count back, as again they both also came joint third on points.
This year’s annual sales conference was held at Garland’s new distribution centre, which houses a new showroom and conference room, and is based near the company’s factory in Kingswinford.
Garland’s sales director, Mark Dedman commented:” The conference provided the opportunity for us to acquaint our team with the plans for Glee 2026 (19D40-E41) and the 45 new products being launched for the 2027 season. Among the new products being displayed alongside our full range of tried and tested items at this year’s show will be additions to our propagation ranges, buckle tree ties, professional hanging baskets, brooms, brushes and wall pot holders. Our nationwide team of sales agents will be part of our exhibition customer support staff at Glee.”
The Garland Products Group specialises in the manufacture of plastic injection moulded products and is one of the fastest growing suppliers to the garden industry. The products available to both keen or hobby gardeners have been designed through the company’s own experience as keen gardeners.

The Autumn Edition of PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt, held on 26 and 27 August, was characterised by active trading and a targeted international trade audience.
During the two fair days in Hazerswoude-Dorp/Boskoop, Th Netherlands, the current assortment of garden plants, new introductions, and meetings between growers and buyers took centre stage.
High-quality visitors and increasing trade The number of visitors was comparable to the previous edition, with exhibitors noting that the decision-making authority of those present was high. Buyers from retail chains, purchasing organisations, exporters, wholesalers, and individual garden centres were well represented. Trading was excellent both at the stands, where the focus was on forward trading for the coming spring, and at the GROEN-Direkt sample fair.
GROEN-Direkt recorded an increase in both the average trolley price and the total number of trolleys sold compared to last year. After a period in which the sales market showed a slight contraction in many countries, this increase in turnover is a striking development. The sales results indicate a positive market sentiment and the expectation of higher autumn sales of garden plants in Europe.
Green Retail Awards During the fair, the Green Retail Awards were presented for distinctive introductions and concepts within the sector. From the entries, the jury’s selected the following winners:

Best Novelty: Mahonia 'BBM9' (JUNGLEWHISPER) by Colorchoice Plants EU BV/Valkplant BV
The KVBC judging committee appreciated the combination of compact growth, red young shoots, and fragrant orange-yellow flowers, resulting in year-round ornamental value. With this, this Mahonia beat 44 other novelties; a respectable number of new plants presented at the fair.

Best Market Innovation: Urban Oase by Van Son & Koot
This new concept translates the 'urban jungle' trend to the outdoor space with a specific assortment of foliage plants for balconies, patios, and city gardens, perfectly matching current retail demand. This year, the international retail jury judged no fewer than twelve new brands and concepts. Blomsterlandet will include the winning concept in its stores.

Visitor’s Favourite: Clematis ’Zo25005’ (GLORIOUS® CLOUD) by J. van Zoest BV
This Clematis received the majority of the public votes and was immediately available for trade, allowing garden centres to add the product directly to their assortment. This makes PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt a special trade fair, where dozens of novelties are not only presented but are also immediately available for garden plant retail.

Knowledge and inspiration The Plantarium Green Future Hub offered in-depth content with a roundtable hosted by trade journal De Boomkwekerij. During the roundtable, experts discussed the impact of factors such as climate and sustainability on our future product assortment.
Michael Perry highlighted one hundred products, ranging from traditional varieties to drought-resistant novelties. His selection emphasised trends like climate adaptation, biodiversity, and aesthetic added value. Unique in this regard were his presentations during the Botanical Banquet.
Looking ahead to 2027 The next Spring Edition of PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt is scheduled for 2 and 3 February 2027. The Autumn Edition will take place on 25 and 26 August 2027. Up-to-date information and registration options can be found at www.plantariumgroendirekt.nl.

The Young People in Horticulture Association (YPHA) is inviting members from across the UK to join a special event exploring Garden Centre Retailing at Christmas in Tiptree on Friday 23 October, offering the chance to learn what goes into creating a successful Christmas retail offer and see it in action at Perrywood Garden Centres.
As the second and final YPHA member event of 2026, the day is designed to give horticultural professionals and students aged 35 and under the chance to broaden their industry knowledge, gain practical ideas and make new connections with fellow YPHA members.
The day will begin at Tiptree Community Centre with a series of masterclasses exploring the value of Christmas to the horticulture industry, the principles behind successful Christmas displays and visual merchandising, and practical ideas for creating effective retail displays.
In the afternoon, members will head to Perrywood Garden Centres in Tiptree to see these ideas brought to life. The visit will include a tour of the garden centre's Christmas displays and a closer look at visual merchandising in action, giving members the chance to see how the thinking behind successful Christmas retailing translates into a real customer environment.
There will also be plenty of time throughout the day for questions, discussion and networking, with lunch providing a further opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with fellow YPHA members.
Jeremy Costello, YPHA Committee Member, said: "Christmas is such an important part of the garden centre calendar, but a successful Christmas offer takes far more than putting up a few decorations. It takes a huge amount of thought, creativity, and commercial imagination.
"We wanted to give our members the chance to understand some of that thinking, learn from industry experts and then see it all brought to life at Perrywood. And, as with all YPHA events, there will be plenty of opportunity to meet other people in the industry, share ideas and build new connections."

Suttons brings a fragrant twist to spring planting with a new collection of beautifully scented daffodils, ready to be planted this autumn for a colourful spring display.
The collection includes three fragrant daffodil varieties – Daffodil ‘Ice Baby’, Daffodil ‘Bridal Crown’ and Daffodil ‘Most Scented Mix’ – offering gardeners the chance to add both colour and fragrance to their spring displays.
Daffodils (Narcissus) are one of the most recognisable signs that spring has arrived, but many gardeners may not realise that some varieties are beautifully scented too. Their delicate to richly sweet perfume adds an extra sensory dimension to the garden, making them ideal for planting near paths, patios, doorways and seating areas where their fragrance can be enjoyed.
Rob Smith, Product Development Manager at Suttons, said: “Fragrant daffodils bring something extra special to the garden. After a long winter, there’s nothing better than seeing those first cheerful flowers appear, and when they smell beautiful too, it’s a real treat.
“‘Ice Baby’ is wonderfully fresh and delicate, while ‘Bridal Crown’ has gorgeous, full blooms and a lovely perfume. The ‘Most Scented Mix’ is great if you want plenty of variety and fragrance throughout your garden in spring. I’d plant them near a path, doorway, or seating area, where you can properly enjoy their scent, and if you can’t decide where to put them, try planting them in pots that you can move around the garden to make the most of their scent!
“They’re easy to grow, return year after year and provide that much-needed lift at the beginning of the gardening season after a long winter. In my opinion, every garden should have a few fragrant daffodils.”

Independent Scottish garden centre group Caulders has completed an investment of almost £1 million in the transformation of its newest centre, Caulders Merryhatton.
Situated near North Berwick in East Lothian, Merryhatton joined the Caulders family in June and reopened to customers as Caulders Merryhatton on Saturday 8 August following an extensive refurbishment programme.
The acquisition takes the family-owned group to 11 garden centres across Scotland and represents a significant investment in both Merryhatton and the surrounding area.

The redevelopment has brought substantial improvements throughout the site. The outdoor plant area has almost doubled in size, allowing Caulders to significantly expand the range of quality plants, trees, shrubs and gardening products available at the centre.
Major external works have also been completed, including the tarring and monoblocking of previously undeveloped areas and a significant extension to the customer car park. These improvements have increased parking capacity, enhanced accessibility and created a much more attractive and welcoming arrival at the centre.
Inside, the garden centre has been extensively refurbished to introduce the wider selection of gifts, homeware, gardening products and outdoor living collections for which Caulders has become known.
At the heart of the transformation is a brand-new Caulders restaurant, created in the style that has become such an important part of the group’s successful garden centre model.

The new restaurant offers Caulders’ familiar combination of freshly prepared, home-cooked food, generous portions, homemade cakes and friendly service within a bright and welcoming new environment. Significant investment has also been made behind the scenes in the kitchen and operational areas, ensuring the restaurant is equipped to serve the centre and the local community for many years to come.
Since reopening, customer support and early trading have been extremely encouraging, with sales across both the garden centre and restaurant exceeding the company’s initial expectations.
Mandy Barrie, co-owner and Organisational Director of Caulders Garden Centres, said: “Although we believed Merryhatton was a wonderful fit for Caulders, the response since we opened has exceeded even our expectations. Sales have been extremely encouraging, but what has meant most to us has been the warmth of the welcome and the level of support we have received from customers and the local community.
“We have invested almost £1 million because we could see the enormous potential in Merryhatton. It is in a beautiful location, has an established customer base and, most importantly, has a team of people who genuinely care about the centre and its customers.
“One of the most important parts of the development has been almost doubling the size of the plant area. Plants are at the heart of Caulders, and the additional space will allow us to offer customers a much wider range while creating an inspirational and enjoyable environment in which to shop.
“We have also made a considerable investment in the exterior of the site. The extended and upgraded car parking, new tarring and monoblocking have made an enormous difference to both the appearance and accessibility of the centre.
“There are still some finishing touches and further improvements to come, but we are absolutely delighted with what has already been achieved. Merryhatton feels very much like part of the Caulders family, and we are incredibly excited about its future.”

Caulders was founded by Colin and Mandy Barrie in 1999, when they opened their first small plant centre at Mugdock Country Park. The business has since grown steadily to become one of Scotland’s leading independent garden centre groups, now operating 11 centres and employing more than 500 people.
Despite that growth, the company remains family-owned and continues to build its business around what it describes as “new ideas and old-fashioned principles” – combining continued investment and development with knowledgeable staff, friendly service and a strong focus on the customer experience.
The investment at Merryhatton forms part of Caulders’ continued commitment to developing high-quality garden centres and restaurants that serve as destinations for their local communities.
Caulders Merryhatton is located at 11 Holding, East Fortune, North Berwick, East Lothian, EH39 5JS, and is open seven days a week.

One of Britain’s best-known names in art pottery is set for a new chapter after Woodlodge acquired Brannam Pottery and its historic design archive.
The Tetbury-based garden pottery specialist has acquired Brannam Pottery, C.H. Brannam, Royal Barum Ware and Litchdon Potteries, together with the intellectual property and original design books associated with the brands.
The acquisition brings more than 175 years of British pottery heritage into the care of Woodlodge, which plans to preserve the archive while using it as inspiration for the future of the Brannam name.

Brannam traces its roots to Barnstaple, North Devon, in 1848 and became a prominent name in the British art-pottery movement designing and manufacturing pottery for famous retail names such as Liberty & Heals. Under Charles Hubert Brannam, the pottery became known for expressive shapes, rich glazes, tactile finishes and distinctive botanical and animal decoration. Its reputation extended well beyond Devon, with Queen Victoria placing an order in 1885 and the Royal Barum Ware name registered the following year.
Central to the acquisition is Brannam’s collection of historic design books. The archive provides a record of generations of pottery design, capturing the shapes, motifs, colours and decorative techniques that helped establish the distinctive Brannam style.
Woodlodge plans to use these original designs as a creative reference rather than simply reproducing pieces from the past, with the archive informing future interpretations for contemporary homes and gardens.
Michael Wooldridge, Director of Woodlodge Products, said: “Brannam represents exactly the kind of British design heritage that deserves to be protected and brought back to life. We see ourselves as custodians of that heritage.”
Simon Fox, who led Brannam Pottery for many years, said: “Woodlodge has a deep understanding of pottery, an established relationship with garden centres across the country and, most importantly, a genuine enthusiasm for the history and design legacy behind Brannam. I believe they are ideally placed to act as custodians of the name and to introduce its iconic British earthenware style to a new generation.”
The acquisition marks a natural step for Woodlodge, a second-generation family business established in 1987. The company has built its reputation around garden pottery and supports garden centres and retail outlets across the UK.
An exclusive preview of the next chapter for Brannam will be revealed at Glee, where visitors can find Woodlodge at Hall 19, Stand E10-G11.

Planning changes could open up opportunities for garden centres
Leading garden centre planning and strategic advisers Pleydell Smithyman are encouraging owners to take a fresh look at their longer-term ambitions following the Government's publication of a significantly revised National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) on 17 August 2026...

Garden centre owners encouraged to revisit growth and diversification plans following major changes to national planning policy and Garden centres that have previously put expansion, diversification or investment plans on hold could now have good reason to look at them again.
Leading garden centre planning and strategic advisers Pleydell Smithyman are encouraging owners to take a fresh look at their longer-term ambitions following the Government's publication of a significantly revised National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) on 17 August 2026.
The changes could provide a more positive planning environment for businesses looking to grow, diversify and invest – particularly where development supports the role that rural businesses play in their local communities and economies.
While the changes do not mean that every garden centre development will automatically receive planning permission, they do provide an important opportunity for owners to revisit plans, test previously shelved ideas and consider what the future of their site could look like.
Why should garden centres take notice?
Garden centres have evolved considerably beyond their traditional role as places to buy plants and gardening products. Today, many are significant destinations combining retail, catering, food, leisure, events and experiences. For some businesses, the next stage of growth could involve a new café or restaurant, expanded retail space, improved outdoor trading, visitor attractions or other complementary uses. Planning policy, however, has not always made it straightforward to develop these ambitions in rural locations.
The revised NPPF places greater emphasis on economic growth, investment and the sustainable development of rural businesses, which could be particularly relevant to garden centres.
New Policies S3 to S5 replace the previous approach set out under Paragraph 11 and introduce a more permanent presumption in favour of suitably located development.
Policy S5 identifies development outside settlement boundaries that can benefit from this presumption, including agriculture, horticulture and forestry, outdoor sport and recreation, allotments, and rural businesses and services, including tourism.
The framework also makes clear that an unmet need is not limited to housing. This could provide rural businesses with another way of demonstrating the need for new services or facilities.
From garden centre to destination
The changes could be particularly relevant to garden centres looking at how they can remain competitive and commercially sustainable over the longer term.
Potential opportunities could include:
- Retail expansion – improving or increasing the space available for core and complementary retail.
- Catering investment – creating new cafés, restaurants or food-led experiences.
- Leisure and visitor facilities – introducing attractions or experiences that increase dwell time and repeat visits.
- Outdoor trading – improving plant areas and seasonal outdoor sales environments.
- Diversification – introducing complementary uses that strengthen the overall business.
- Building investment – converting existing buildings or considering new facilities where appropriate.
- Masterplanning – developing a long-term strategy for the whole site rather than considering individual projects in isolation.
The economic policies within the revised NPPF also place significant weight on business investment.
Policy E2 directs “substantial weight” towards investment, expansion and adaptation by businesses, while Policy E4 specifically supports the sustainable growth and diversification of rural businesses, including agriculture, tourism, leisure and local services.
For garden centres, this could be an important shift in the way future development proposals are considered.
Planning should support the commercial strategy
Andrew Burton, Director at Pleydell Smithyman, said: “The Pleydell Smithyman planning team have been reviewing these immediate changes alongside the work we are already doing, and the wider team are now aware of the updates when discussing projects with clients.
“Overall, we are positive about the changes. For someone who doesn't work in planning, the system can sometimes feel like a series of obstacles. What these changes appear to do is provide a clearer framework and, importantly, greater recognition of the contribution that rural businesses make to their local communities and economies.”
Andrew believes the opportunity for garden centres goes beyond simply asking whether a particular development can be approved. “The real opportunity is to step back and think about what the garden centre needs to become in the future. If a business has previously considered expanding its café, introducing a visitor attraction, developing additional retail space or diversifying into other areas and decided not to progress because of planning risk, it could now be worth revisiting those ideas.”
Andrew added: “Planning should not be considered in isolation. The starting point should be the commercial strategy – what does the business need to achieve? Planning then becomes part of understanding how that ambition might be delivered.”
It is not a green light for every project
The revised NPPF does not remove the need for careful planning assessment.
Andrew added “But feedback from our planning team is that there are still important considerations. The sequential test and impact assessments remain, and Green Belt policies have not fundamentally changed. Every site will continue to be assessed on its own merits.
“So, this is not about saying that every garden centre can now expand or diversify without restriction. It is about recognising that the national policy environment has changed and making sure garden centre owners understand what that could mean for their particular business and site.”
A reason to start the conversation
With changing customer expectations and increasing competition for leisure and retail spending, many garden centres are already considering how they can make their businesses more resilient and give customers more reasons to visit.
The revised planning framework could form an important part of that conversation.
Andrew said “We understand that garden centre owners are busy running their businesses and don't necessarily have the time to keep up with every planning policy change. Our role is to understand what they want to achieve, explain what the changes could mean for them in straightforward terms, and help them explore the opportunities in a realistic and commercially sensible way. For garden centres considering their next stage of growth, we believe now is a good time to revisit those plans.”

Strong demand and the importance of diversification
Key takeaways from Christie & Co's Garden Centre Market Snapshot

Christie & Co has highlighted some of the key takeaways from its latest Garden Centre Market Snapshot and commented on its experiences and insights gained from another six months at the forefront of the garden centre transactional market.
The UK garden centre sector has continued to demonstrate resilience and adaptability during the first half of 2026. Despite ongoing cost pressures, consumer demand remains robust, supported by enduring lifestyle trends, growing interest in wellbeing and outdoor living, and an increasingly diversified retail offering.
Transaction activity in the sector also remains strong, as buyer demand continues to exceed supply, and well-positioned operators are attracting significant interest from across the market.
DEMAND CONTINUES TO OUTWEIGH SUPPLY
One of the main themes of H1 2026 has been the strength of buyer demand, as corporate operators, regional groups and first-time buyers have all remained active, creating a competitive market for quality opportunities. Well-invested businesses with multiple income streams and clear growth opportunities continue to command significant buyer attention.
CONSOLIDATION REMAINS A KEY THEME
Market consolidation continues at pace, with acquisitive operators such as British Garden Centres and Blue Diamond actively expanding their portfolios.
Alongside established groups, independent operators and lifestyle buyers remain a significant force in the market. In the first half of 2026, 50% of garden centre sales completed by Christie & Co in this period were acquired by a first-time buyer, while 100% of the sites sold to new-to-sector entrants were following a fully open marketing campaign.
REASONS FOR SALE
Many sales continue to be driven by retirement, with two-thirds of transactions we completed in H1 2026 coming as a result of owners stepping back from the industry after many years of ownership. Other less commonly found reasons for sale have included diversification and strategic disposal.
Notably, we have seen no distress-sale completions during the first half of 2026, highlighting the underlying strength and stability of the sector.
THE IMPORTANCE OF DIVERSIFICATION
While overall trading performance remains generally positive, profitability pressures continue to impact operators as a result of rising employment costs, energy prices and inflation. Businesses are increasingly focusing on operational efficiency and alternative revenue streams.
The strongest-performing garden centres are now destination-led businesses that combine traditional horticultural retailing with cafés, restaurants, farm shops, concessions and leisure experiences. Buyers continue to favour these models, attracted by their broader customer appeal and multiple income streams, and the Horticultural Trades Association reported a 9% year-on-year increase in café and restaurant sales during May 2026.
OUTLOOK FOR THE REST OF 2026
Looking ahead, demand for quality garden centre businesses is expected to remain high from both larger operators and new entrants to the sector. Garden centres and farm shops with diversified income streams and clear opportunities for future growth are likely to continue attracting significant buyer interest.
Regional operators continue to seek acquisition opportunities, while larger transactions are increasingly being structured through leasehold agreements and share sales. For owners considering their options, market conditions remain favourable, particularly where businesses are well-invested and professionally presented.

The Greenfingers Charity is reminding everyone heading to Glee on Thursday 10th September to make sure one essential item is firmly on their packing list: something floral!
Whether it is a bold floral shirt, a flower-covered suit, a fabulous dress, statement hat, colourful socks or simply a touch of botanical print, exhibitors and visitors are being encouraged to embrace Floral Thursday and help turn the final day of Glee into a colourful celebration in support of the children's hospice garden charity.
Now a much-loved part of the show, Floral Thursday sees the garden retail industry come together in its floral finest, raising both smiles and vital funds for the Greenfingers Charity, which creates beautiful, therapeutic gardens for children with life-limiting conditions and their families spending time in hospices across the UK.
Throughout the day, the Greenfingers team and friends of the charity will be welcoming visitors to the show, shaking their donation buckets and selling raffle tickets. And for anyone who forgets their florals, there will still be plenty of opportunity to get involved by making a donation and helping push the fundraising total even higher.
Floral Thursday takes to Centre Stage
The celebrations will come together at 12:30pm on Glee’s Centre Stage, when visitors and exhibitors are invited to gather for the Floral Thursday finale.
Not only will the raffle winners be revealed but there is an extra reason to join the crowd, as this year’s Floral Thursday will also attempt to make horticultural history with a world record attempt for the most people dressed in floral print in one photograph. To make this happen, everyone at Glee is being encouraged to head to Centre Stage in their floral best and make sure they are part of the picture.
Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising and Communications at the Greenfingers Charity, said: “Floral Thursday is always one of those moments at Glee that captures just how brilliantly this industry comes together. Seeing the aisles filled with floral shirts, dresses, suits and all manner of fabulous outfits creates such a wonderful atmosphere, but behind all the fun is a really important purpose.
“Every raffle ticket bought and every donation dropped into one of our buckets helps us create more magical gardens for children and families spending time in hospices. We would love everyone at Glee on Thursday to join in, however big or small their floral contribution, and then come together at Centre Stage at 12:30pm for what promises to be a fantastic finale.
“And, of course, this year we want as many people as possible in that photograph. If we can combine raising vital funds with making a little horticultural history along the way, even better!”
Every penny raised through Floral Thursday will support Greenfingers Charity's work creating inspiring outdoor spaces at children's hospices across the UK, providing places where children, families, siblings and carers can spend precious time together away from the clinical environment.
So, when packing for Glee 2026, remember: Thursday means floral.
