Pennells Garden Centre to continue rapid growth after securing fresh cash injection

Pennells Garden Centre in Lincoln is eyeing expansion after securing a new cash injection. The family-run business wants to continue its recent growth after obtaining funding from Clydesdale Bank enabling it to invest in its premises and improve its offering to customers.

Pennells, which began in 1780, has undergone a dramatic period of growth over the past few years following the development of a 270-seat restaurant and additional retail space in 2008.

Its latest investment includes a new luxury food hall, featuring a butchers counter, an extension to the restaurant with a further 200 seats, 1,500 sq metres of additional retail indoor space and a 3,300sqm fully covered plant area.

As a result of the investment the centre's staff count has grown by 15, bringing the total number of employees to more than 80.

Richard Pennell, chairman of the business, said: "We were keen to develop the centre further in order to strengthen the appeal of the business to customers in the Lincoln area.

"The support we have received from the Clydesdale Bank has been instrumental in helping realise this ambition."

Within the development there are plans for Leading Labels Clothing, Pavers Shoes, Field & Trek and Gary Simpson Butchers – all providing a strong attraction for customers from Lincoln and the surrounding areas.

The most recent funding package was delivered by Michael Pickles, relationship manager at Clydesdale Bank's Business and Private Banking Centre in Lincoln.

Katy Simpson, head of Clydesdale Bank's Lincoln Business and Private Banking Centre, said: "It's great to work with and be able to support a thriving local business like Pennells Garden Centre.

"The company demonstrates the incredibly important role enterprising family-owned businesses play in the region and typifies their ambitious nature. We're particularly pleased to help the business expand its current offering to customers.

"Clydesdale Bank remains focussed on investing in the local economy and it's extremely rewarding to know that we can play a part in supporting the aspirations of ambitious firms like Pennells Garden Centre."

Mild December caps record year for sales

The mildest December for many years, if not ever, may have stunted the sales of some usual garden centre winter sales such as coal, logs, grit, sledges and wild bird food but it’s not hampered overall sales with week 50 being another record sales week, according to GTN Bestsellers data...

The mildest December for many years, if not ever, may have stunted the sales of some usual garden centre winter sales such as coal, logs, grit, sledges and wild bird food but it’s not hampered overall sales with week 50 being another record sales week, according to GTN Bestsellers data.

So we reach the end of 2015 with record sales for Growing Media, Veg-2-Gro and Christmas in our Bestsellers data analysis.

Interestingly, despite it also being a record year for gardening and plant sales, our GTN Bestsellers Garden Products index is down year on year. Perhaps growing conditions were just so good customers didn’t need to buy so much pest control and lawncare products.

Looking forward to next year with mild weather forecast for January and February we could get off to a great early gardening start.

GTN Bestsellers Top 50 sales volumes compared to the same week last year...
  • Garden Products - up 24%
  • Christmas Products - up 11%
  • Growing Media - up 4%
  • All Items Index - up 7%

Happy Christmas to you all, we’ll see you in the New Year!

Wyevale Garden Centres plan to launch e-commerce website next Spring
Wyevale Garden Centres are undertaking market research to capture views and feedback on a test version of their new e-commerce website design as part of a move towards becoming a multichannel business...
Wyevale Garden Centres are undertaking market research to capture views and feedback on a test version of their new e-commerce website design as part of a move towards becoming a multichannel business.

The test site being researched has purposefully been set up as a non-transactional site for research purposes only and will not replace the current Wyevale Garden Centre web site which will continue to be the main site that will be on view for customers not taking part in the survey.

The market research panel will comprise of existing Wyevale Garden Centre customers who have been invited to preview, experience and feedback on a fresh new design template with brand new navigational features that will include comprehensive content as well as gardening advice and tips to help the site become the best gardening website in the UK

Whilst the panel will not be able to make purchases at this stage, extensive research and planning such as this testing phase will be key to ensuring that the brand’s offering is extensively suited to its varied audience base of experienced gardeners whilst being accessible to its growing audiences of occasional and keen gardeners.

The step changing e-commerce platform is an important part of Wyevale Garden Centres becoming a multichannel business in Spring 2016 as the business looks to continue its sales growth journey.

Wyevale Garden Centres CEO Kevin Bradshaw says: “We value feedback from our customers who will be able to guide us in developing our new website into something truly special for our customers."

The new e-commerce website will be rolled out in Spring 2016.
Top garden centres sign up for 24 hour ‘Plant-athon’

The 24-hour ‘Plant-athon’ challenge has captured the imagination - and full support - of eight of the UK’s top retail figures ahead of Greenfingers Garden Re-Leaf Day on Friday 18th March 2016...

The 24-hour ‘Plant-athon’ challenge has captured the imagination - and full support - of eight of the UK’s top retail figures ahead of Greenfingers Garden Re-Leaf Day on Friday 18th March 2016.

Each garden centre signing up to the fundraising effort will begin their Plant-athons at 4pm on Thursday 17th and finish at 4pm on Friday the 18th.

Andy Bunker (Alton Garden Centre), Bob Hewitt (Klondyke), Alan Roper (Blue Diamond Group) and Greenfingers trustee Boyd Douglas-Davies (Hillview) will be using their own centres to showcase their fundraising efforts.

Andy McIndoe and the President of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture, Andrew Gill, will be joining Dennis Espley at Squire's - who will start and finishing their Plant-athons at the slightly earlier time of 2pm.

Will Armitage has also pledged to take part in the 24hr Plant-athon at a garden centre in the North of England.

After challenging others to get involved at the HTA Garden Futures Conference, Hillview CEO Boyd Douglas-Davies aid: “I’m really looking forward to taking part in the Plant-athon, which is already shaping up to be one of the fundraising highlights of the year - never before have we had so much support so early on in the campaign, but we need more!

"With the charity walk taking place for a second year, the quiz becoming more family orientated, and product promotions from Gardman and Briers, Greenfingers Garden Re-Leaf Day is already shaping up to be the best since we began in 2012.”

How can I take part in the Plant-athon?

If you want to showcase your garden centre as a major charitable fundraiser - whilst also boosting your saleable stock overnight - then the 24hr Plant-athon is the way to go.

You'll need to first assemble a team that is up for the considerable challenge of planting day and night.  Then, you'll need to find a suitable, heated, stage for you to work whilst customers come to visit, help out, learn how to plant, and pledge additional sponsorship.

To generate publicity for your garden centre you might want to invite the local media, particularly your local radio or TV news station to report on the event.  In addition, after the event, further funds can be raised from donations from the sale of each plant.

If you want to find out more about how to get involved in Greenfingers Garden Re-Leaf Day 2016, whether by putting on events in your garden centre, through sponsored solo activities or simply by making a donation - contact the Greenfingers office on 01494 674749 or email sarah@greenfingerscharity.org.uk

G Plants set to ‘Bee Friends’ with BeeMat
Thriving seed and bulb supplier G Plants has announced that the popular BeeMat brand has been incorporated into its product portfolio, offering retailers increased access to the popular seed mat range...
Thriving seed and bulb supplier G Plants has announced that the popular BeeMat brand has been incorporated into its product portfolio, offering retailers increased access to the popular seed mat range.

Complementing the company’s existing 'Bee Friends' offering, the BeeMat collection will no doubt enable G Plants to further expand its market share, which already sees the company sell in excess of 500,000 seed mats each year to a wide range of UK retailers.

The BeeMat range, under G Plants’ control, will continue to deliver the high yield wild flower mixtures that have become synonymous with the brand. It has also been confirmed that BeeMat’s ever-popular sales agent, Nigel Clarke, has been retained to continue to drive sales of the product throughout the year ahead.

Alex Reihl, director of G Plants, said: "This year we have focused our efforts on developing an ethical and effective wildlife range, which is driven less by aesthetics but instead by delivering products that provide the vital nourishment and habitats that are needed by our nation’s pollinators, birds and endangered bats.

'Bee Friends is just the start of this journey; a journey which we are excited to span in 2016. The incorporation of the BeeMat brand is certainly a great place to kick start the early spring season, and we look forward to working with retailers to help them secure stock ahead of the inevitable Easter peak in sales.”

Gardman help retailers create an eye-catching hanging basket display

With experts predicting that more people will live in rented accommodation and want their outdoor spaces to be transportable, Gardman see hanging gardening and container planting a major area of growth - in particular their premium hanging garden brand, Blacksmith.

Using hanging containers and wall troughs to transform otherwise dull patios and balconies was demonstrated in this year’s ‘Love the Plot You’ve Got’ roadshow by the Garden Industry Marketing Board, and was one of the campaign’s most popular features

Retailers can capitalise on this evident trend by ensuring they create engaging, easy-to-shop hanging gardening displays; and boasting the most comprehensive range of hanging gardening that covers all price points and consumer tastes, Gardman is best-placed to help retailers fashion such in-store theatred display.

When merchandised in full the company’s flagship hanging gardening brand, Blacksmith, creates the ultimate shop-in-shop display.  The brand offers retailers a choice of hand-forged wrought-iron baskets, troughs, planters and brackets in a choice of sizes, plus the whole range is backed by a five-year guarantee. To further support the range, there’s a suite of consumer engaging POS and seasonal planting take-away guides, plus a tiered display plinth that can be used for link-sell opportunities such as water gel, compost or plants.

The trend towards smaller gardens will also stimulate the sales of Gardman’s new Moulton Mill ‘Budding Gardeners’ range of smaller, lightweight tools, which were unveiled to great acclaim at Glee. Ideal in compact gardens where space is limited, these premium tools are designed to suit users who may not be able to manage heavier full-size versions and, as the name suggests, they are ideal for younger gardeners too.

Packaging and merchandising material carries the slogan ‘For families that grow together’, to give emphasis that gardening is a fun and rewarding pastime that can be enjoyed by the whole family; children, parents and grandparents alike.

Made with durable carbon steel heads, all tools come with an FSC certified Ash handles and, to showcase the range in-store, a beautiful shed-shaped display has been crafted to house the entire range.

The Show Your Colours Award IPM 2016 will be presented at the 2016 Internationale Pflanzen Messe (IPM) trade fair in Essen, Germany. All the IPM participants were invited to submit a plant and its background story. Thirteen plants and/or concepts will be competing for the award...

Emotion and perception

Buying plants often goes hand in hand with emotion and perception. At the sales outlet, they tend to be impulse buys which are guided by emotion. For this reason, it is important to attract the attention of the customer at the moment of purchase.

The Show Your Colours Award IPM 2016 responds to the emotion generated by the plant by means of the familiar emoticons: the yellow faces on our smartphones, tablets etc. which highlight how we are feeling and lend extra emphasis to our story. These emoticons have therefore been added to the communication about the plants, to capture the attention of the customers to an even greater extent. Together with a brief description of the plant, this provides an extra impetus at the sales outlet.

Show Your Colours Award IPM 2016

In alphabetical order, the thirteen plants/concepts which are competing for the Show Your Colours Award IPM 2016 are as follows:

Buxus sempervirens BUXUS JEANS OF GARDEN, Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Blue Moon', Fascicularia bicolor GARDEN BROMELIA, Gaultheria procumbens GAULTIER PEARL (‘SPECGP11’), Hebe GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY ('Lowag'), Hibiscus syriacus in varieties, Hydrangea macrophylla hybride, Hydrangea macrophylla MAGICAL in varieties, Loropetalum chinense EVER RED (‘Chang Nian Hong’), Paeonia RICH AND SPARKLING (Itoh Group) in varieties, Ribes/Rubus/Vaccinium in 100% organic cardboard pot, Skimmia japonica DWARF Series, Viburnum plicatum KILIMANDJARO SUNRISE (‘JWW5’).

Judging

Before the fair, people can vote for the twelve nominees online. From week 2 (11 January 2016), the websites www.IPM-essen.de and www.bizzcommunications.nl will have links which lead directly to the poll. At the fair, visitors can also vote using tokens until the end of Thursday morning at the BIZZ Holland stand and at the East entrance to the fair. On Thursday afternoon, the plants and their stories will be judged by an expert jury consisting of Michel Verbeek from Flora Holland, Sytse Berends Blunt Communicatieadvies|Peak Retail, Werner Oschek, trade journalist from various German trade journals and Oliver P. Kuhrt from Messe Essen, together with a mystery member. The verdict of the jury, together with the votes received via the poll and the tokens, will ultimately produce one winner. The award ceremony will take place at around 3.30 pm on the afternoon of Thursday 28 January, on the BIZZ Holland stand (stand number 12A13).

The Show Your Colours Award IPM 2016 is a collaboration between the organisers of IPM and BIZZ Communications.

GCA members reminded to enter the Worrall Cup
Garden Centre Association members are being reminded that they still have time to compete for the chance to win the Worrall Cup...
Garden Centre Association members are being reminded that they still have time to compete for the chance to win the Worrall Cup.

The cup will be awarded during the association’s golden jubilee conference in January (2016) to the garden centre that has the best marketing campaign or initiative.

Iain Wylie, Chief Executive of the GCA, said: “This is a great opportunity and we would like to remind our members that they still have time to submit their entries to be in with a chance of winning this prestigious award.

“We’re looking for the garden centre that has come up with the best, most inspiring marketing campaign or initiative. We want our members to show flair and creativity and most importantly inspire other members to follow suit.

“As this award is not influenced by the annual inspection all entries have an equal chance of winning when the judging panel meet to assess the merits of each submission and decide the winner.”

To enter people can request a form via info@gca.org.uk or download one from www.gca.org.uk. Entries can be submitted via email at info@gca.org.uk. The deadline is 5pm on Friday, January 15.

Iain added: “The entries will be judged by an independent panel of judges with marketing expertise.

“The winner will be announced during our annual dinner awards ceremony, which takes place at the end of our annual conference, on the evening of Tuesday, January 26.

“As always our conference will provide attendees with pertinent information on key aspects of the garden centre industry to assist members in achieving their business goals.

“The information shared will focus on a wide range of topics, including merchandising, marketing and management. There will also be plenty of opportunities for delegates to network and socialise.”

The GCA’s annual conference will be held at The Grand Hotel in Brighton from January 24 until 27, 2016. More than 300 delegates are expected to attend the event.

Have Santa hats gone out of fashion this Christmas?
Lights and tinsel are the big movers in the final run up to Christmas Day, with Playwrite Magic Snow Tube entering the GTN Bestrsellers chart for the first time...
Lights and tinsel are the big movers in the final run up to Christmas Day.

With most centres reporting record sales of both artificial and fresh trees it’s no surprise to see a record number of Christmas lighting lines in the Top 50. Just how many sets of lights can we sell?

Tinsel is also a big mover but a notable absence from the chart this year are Santa Hats. Have they gone out of fashion, or is it just too warm to wear one?

Some of the star performers this week include:
  • Premier LED Battery Operated Lights Multi Action 20 Warm White are the highest re-entry at No 6.
  • Premier Battery Operated Warm White 35 LED Lights are the highest new entry at No 11.
  • Playwrite Magic Snow Tube (pictured) is also a new entry at No 12.

Host of new products from Wildlife World at Spring Fair 2016
Spring Fair 2016 will be the debut for many new products from Wildlife World, the innovators and leaders in wildlife conservation products...

Spring Fair 2016 will be the debut for many new products from Wildlife World, the innovators and leaders in wildlife conservation products.

At the forefront of the new introductions are three products which are likely to be the focus of attention on the company’s stand.  Adding to the garden birds product range is the new Archway Ground Feeder, an attractive bird feeder with a long clear arch to keep bird food dry and for a clear view of the garden visitors.  Known for its wide range of insect hotels, Wildlife World is launching a new Nine Room Insect Hotel at Spring Fair, this allowing different selections of material for habitat for each of the nine rooms for insects, making it a fascinating insect home in the garden.

A brand new product in the bat box range is the new Vincent Pro Bat Box, the design of which has been tried and tested in conjunction with the Vincent Wildlife Trust which has been pioneering mammal conservation for 40 years.  The Bat Box has three vertical chambers of varying size and temperature zones suiting at least 7 species of bat.

The new wildlife habitat will join a host of products for all manner of species from Wildlife World, from bees, butterflies and ladybirds, to dormice, frogs and hedgehogs.  The company’s award winning range of biomes will also be on display including its popular Bee & Bug biome for over-wintering habitats.  All of these include a pack of native wildflower seeds to allow the creation of a wildlife garden appropriate for the species, plus a laminated species guide.

Wildlife World is proud to have won two accolades for its products in 2015.  Its innovative Urban Range of bird boxes and feeders specially designed for city living which has only been on the market for 12 months won the European Consumer Choice award for 2015, the second year running that the company has achieved this.  Also, its colourful New England Bird Nest Box walked away with the Telegraph’s vote as one of the best ‘Garden Buys’ at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show in 2015.

This year has also seen from Wildlife World, the introduction of its Supersize products which will be on show for the first time at Spring Fair 2016.  Standing 1.5 metres tall, there is a Giant Bee and Bug Biome and a Giant Solitary Bee Hive, and Giant Pyramid Insect Hotel, all of which are designed to act as a focal point feature outside retail stores and garden centres, so as to draw more customers in.

Helping to arrest the decline in hedgehog numbers, Wildlife World will be showing its most popular product, the Hedgehog Igloo.  Designed to encourage the much needed breeding of hedgehogs, the wicker igloo is the largest in the range and provides a safe haven for hedgehogs to shelter with a small entrance ensuring that these small mammals are protected from predators.

Wildlife World has a strong commitment to wildlife species and the environment and designs and tests all of its products in-house to ensure that they are sustainable and safe for wildlife to use. The company creates each product using environmentally-friendly materials, including FSC certified timber, recycled plastics and water-based paints so that wildlife cannot be harmed from using its new feeder or habitat.

Further information is available from Wildlife World on 01666 505333, by emailing james@wildlifeworld.co.uk or by visiting the company’s website at www.wildlifeworld.co.uk

Gardeners improved their outdoor spaces in November
Gardeners across the country made use of the milder weather during November and worked on improving their outdoor spaces, according to results from the Garden Centre Association’s Barometer of Trade report...
Gardeners across the country made use of the milder weather during November and worked on improving their outdoor spaces, according to results from the Garden Centre Association’s Barometer of Trade report.

Sales in hard landscaping were up 7.86% but customers were also eating well with Food Hall and Farm Shop sales up 20.07% up compared to the same month last year (2014).

Iain Wylie, GCA Chief Executive, explained: “As a country we have had much milder weather than we’re used to for November so it seems people made good use of it and continued to use their outdoor spaces.

“Furniture and barbecue sales were also positive through the month at 13.24% up with a Year to Date (YTD) change of 9.38%. Other good performers during the month were clothing at 15.14% with a YTD of 14.2% and catering at 8.39% up with a YTD of 9.27%.”

For the month of November the overall garden centre performance was up by 3.93% with a Year to Date change of 6.22%.

Christmas sales rose steadily at 4.23% up with a YTD of 7.33%, but they are expected to be much higher in December. Sales in gifts were 0.67% up with a YTD of 3.04%.

Iain added: “As expected at this time of year, sales in houseplants were just -0.76% up but with a YTD of 7.11% there is some potential for a healthy increase in the busy December sales period. Outdoor plants were -5.85% and seeds and bulbs -2.06%.”

The BoT results are the only official GCA trading figures to be released.

Richard Pennell, Managing Director of Pennells Garden Centre in Lincoln, said: “Following recent development of the centre at Lincoln we have seen strong growth in sales of outdoor plants from our new canopy area and indoors from our new food hall. Our restaurant too has seen strong growth. Customers are looking for a wide range of experiences when they visit a modern garden centre.”

The GCA BoT reports are compiled using actual sales figures and provide an up-to-date trading position statement. They are made available mid-month following the end of the prior month after all member garden centres have submitted their results.

Matthew Bent (pictured above), Managing Director at Bents Garden and Home, said: “The end of 2015 is proving a busy time for Bents with sales in December already looking good and following what has been a strong November across the industry. Our results support the GCA figures with our clothing and Food Hall departments both significantly up on last year. Both departments are now much bigger and offer a much wider variety of products following our recent expansion and we are happy the results reflect the work that has been put in.

“Catering is also up in line with the industry figures, demonstrating that our more long term and established areas of the business continue to perform very well.”

Leading firms support Healthy Profits Roadshow
Leading industry suppliers are supporting a series of one-day training events organised by former Garden Centre Association inspector Liz Hutson...
Leading industry suppliers are supporting a series of one-day training events organised by former Garden Centre Association inspector Liz Hutson...

The ‘Grow Your Own Profits’ roadshow sessions, running over February and March next year, are designed to help garden centres maximize sales of bulbs, seeds, plants, garden sundries, irrigation and bird care. A key aim is to increase footfall and average spend, particularly in core gardening, via as many channels as possible.

Topics will include:

  • Why sales of core garden products and many plants fail to reach their full potential, despite customer demand
  • How to target customers of all ages and abilities, using internal and external means
  • Training for appropriate plant and product groups with quick and easy references to rapidly increase staff knowledge and enthusiasm
  • Thinking outside the box
  • Making the most of all resources and opportunities
  • Implementing a sustainable and realistic strategy

The courses are intended for planteria and sundries staff, owners, managers and marketing employees. Delegates will take away a comprehensive set of training materials.

Liz Hutson says core garden products remain something of a mystery to many customers. “While many other departments may be peaking in terms of potential, there is still a long way to go in order to make the most of the sales opportunities in core gardening in most centres”

She adds: “Improving product knowledge and increasing staff motivation and confidence will have a marked impact on the bottom line and if this is combined with better internal and external communication with the consumer, it can only enhance sales further and help centres make the most of every square metre of selling space.”

Gardman’s Director of Business Development, Lolly Lee, said: “As leading suppliers of core gardening and bird care products, Gardman had no hesitation in offering its support for Liz’s initiative. Good product knowledge helps staff to engage with customers and improve the retail experience, and we believe garden centres will find this a great way to up their game.”

Dates and venues:

  • Maidstone – 16 February (Marriott Tudor Park)
  • Guildford – 18 February (Barnett Hill Hotel & Conference Centre)
  • Cambridge – 23 February (Menzies Hotel)
  • Birmingham – 25 February (Holiday Inn)
  • Chester – 29 February (Carden Park Hotel)
  • Perth – 2 March (Murrayshall House Hotel)

Prices start at £70 plus VAT per delegate (depending on numbers) for early bird booking. Lunch, refreshments and all course materials are included.

Garden centres may book via a special HTA mailing, direct through Liz Hutson (01531 631592, liz.hutson@ledburybband.co.uk) or online at www.bookwhen.com/growprofits

SHOWA gardening gloves, from Globus, have achieved two of the three Which? Best Buys awarded to lightweight garden gloves for excellent performance in comfort, protection, ease of use and durability. Now is the time for garden centres and retailers to stock up so that there is a glove or two on hand for customer requests!

The SHOWA Floreo 370 and SHOWA 341 Advanced Grip gloves were highlighted as ‘Which? Best Buys’ in the Which? Gardening magazine’s top three gloves, scoring highly in all test requirements. Which? Gardening magazine offers a wealth of advice for all gardeners and is highly regarded for its product reviews. Their team tested a range of lightweight gardening gloves for comfort, durability, weeding, protection, ease of deadheading, hard physical work and nettle pulling, as well as the intricate work of writing labels and handling small seeds.

Steve Shale, Marketing Manager for Globus commented, “It’s great that Which? has recognised the all-round attributes and performance of the SHOWA gardening gloves – this certainly backs up the feedback we have already received from gardeners and landscapers alike which helps us to continually improve our glove designs.”

Available in several attractive colours, the SHOWA Floreo 370 is a lightweight glove with a waterproof nitrile palm which provides excellent grip and Which? reports that it ‘fits like a second skin’ and keeps hands clean. The SHOWA 341, available in pink or purple, offers slightly more heavy duty protection with a durable, natural latex palm coating for great grip in all conditions. Yet it remains comfortable, breathable and provides protection from soil dampness. Both pairs of gloves, whilst being cost effective, are designed to last and they are machine washable to keep them clean.

The entire range of SHOWA gardening gloves from Globus has been designed for long periods of wear and allows excellent dexterity, comfort and durability. The gloves have an anatomically designed fit for great comfort and an elasticated cuff to secure the glove in place. They are breathable to keep hands comfortable during long periods of wear and are machine washable.

Globus offers bespoke solutions to garden centres and retailers to provide a range of gloves to protect customers. They are remarkably well fitting, provide excellent protection to the hands from cuts, snagging or abrasion and are modestly priced. Garden centres and other retailers can be sure to secure repeat purchasing as the SHOWA range of gloves is designed for comfort.

Not only are the gloves fit for purpose but they conform to exacting industrial EN standards to ensure that quality is consistent. In addition to the high manufacturing standards, retailers may like to know that only the finest materials have been used.

Month by month this new promotional plant calendar will highlight planting ideas as well as plants at their best to help customers create gardens that are full of colour and interest throughout the year.

The HTA worked with gardening consultant and journalist Adam Pasco to produce this themed calendar which was also agreed upon by UK growers and retailers.

Each month will feature reliable and trustworthy plants that are guaranteed to perform well in almost any garden, including many that have received the RHS ‘Award of Garden Merit’.

Retailers are encouraged to use ‘Plant or the Moment’ to attract customers back into their centres month on month and ultimately sell more plants! The calendar can be used to create vibrant plant displays with great looking plant combinations and planting recipes to inspire customers.

The calendar for 2016-17:

January - Create a winter wonderland
February - Camellias for early colour
March - Spring has sprung with perfect primulas
April - The magic of maples
May - Thyme for herbs
June - Colourful clematis collection

Stewart Garden shares grow your own potato know-how
Stewart Garden is making it easier than ever before for anyone to grow potatoes in 2016 with their new additions to its Blenheim planters range...
Stewart Garden is making it easier than ever before for anyone to grow potatoes in 2016 with their new additions to its Blenheim planters range.

These half barrels look great in any garden and are especially effective where space is tight. They’re also easy to move around, even when full of compost and vegetables. Best of all, growing potatoes in a Blenheim planter means not having the arduous task of creating built-up trenches.

Made of high quality plastics, the Stewart Garden Blenheim planters are tough, durable and guaranteed to withstand seasonal frosts and ultra violet rays. This means they’ll keep their colour all year round.

The grow your own trend has been gathering pace in recent years, with the Evening Standard1 reporting in April 2015 that urban gardeners are, ‘discovering new ways to help live sustainably without breaking the bank.’

The potato planting season is between March and May. For best results:
  • line the bottom of a large deep container such at a Stewart Garden Blenheim planter with 15cm (6 inches) of potting compost
  • plant the seed potato just below the surface
  • as new stems grow, keep adding compost until the container is full
  • keep your growing potatoes away from frost pockets as these can cause damage to the vegetable. Potatoes need to be where they’ll get the sun.

You can expect at least five to ten potatoes per plant. This means you could feed a family for a year with around 75 plants.2

Stewart Garden’s Blenheim planters are available in two sizes:

·         40cm half barrel, RRP (recommended retail price) £19.99

·         61cm half barrel, RRP £44.99

If you’re already sorted for potatoes, the Blenheim half barrels are also perfect for larger plants, herbs, fruit and vegetables or even small trees. Alternatively, use one to create a stylish water feature.

Speaking of the new Blenheim half barrel planters, Gavin Wray channel manager at Stewart Garden, said: “As the market leader in grow your own, we design our products with everyone in mind. These planters make it possible for anyone to grow delicious vegetables, regardless of how large or small your garden is or how experienced you are.”

Stewart Garden engages with customers through its love of gardening, strong heritage and trust. The company uses the latest production techniques and quality systems.

Stewart Garden manufactures its planters from quality plastic at its state-of-the-art factory in Banbury. The company also provides eye-catching point-of-sale and store-specific merchandising advice for all retailers.

Stewart Garden’s grow your own products, pots, watering equipment, propagators and garden accessories are available in over 1,600 outlets across the UK and Eire. These include DIY outlets such as B&Q, Homebase and Wilkinsons and garden centres such as Dobbies and Klondyke/Strikes, Wyevale and over 600 independent garden centres.

Grow Your Own still on the rise as seed firm reports strongest ever start to retail year
Seed and plant specialist Thompson & Morgan is predicting the best ever year for grow your own following a sharp rise in vegetable seeds sales for the 2016 season...
Seed and plant specialist Thompson & Morgan is predicting the best ever year for grow your own following a sharp rise in vegetable seeds sales for the 2016 season.

The Thompson & Morgan seed retailing year runs September to September. The Ipswich based mail order expert has reported an impressive 24 per cent rise in seed sales through September to end of November 2015, compared to the same period in 2014. While flower seed sales remain strong it is vegetable seed that has driven the increase.

Interest in grow your own hit an all time high in 2009, when industry wide sales of vegetable seeds peaked at an historic £60million for the year. Some said the bubble would soon burst but Thompson & Morgan customers are showing no sign of giving up on the good life. Thompson & Morgan Horticultural Director Paul Hansord says if vegetable seed sales continue to perform at current levels then the firm will be reporting its best ever year for the category.

Tomato seeds sales have jumped 51 per cent in the three month period. Much of this growth has been generated by sales of Thompson & Morgan’s Vegetable of the Year for 2016 – Tomato Mountain Magic, a fully blight resistant variety ideal for a trouble-free late season outdoor crop. Akron and Sweet Aperitif join with blight buster to form T&Ms top three tomatoes.

Brassica seed sales have risen 52 per cent, while onion seeds have seen an impressive growth of 67 per cent. T&M says the loss of show bench favourite Onion Kelsae from other retailer’s 2016 catalogues (the Italian seed crop was destroyed by a hail storm and will not be available again until at least 2017) has driven growers towards other large varieties including Onion Bunton’s Showstopper, an exclusive show bench variety developed by one of Thompson & Morgan’s customers. Pea and Bean sales have risen 82 per cent, with Runner Bean Firestorm  - the 2016 Thompson and Morgan Seed Catalogue cover star - alone seeing a 75 per cent rise in sales.

Thompson & Morgan’s Chilli and Pepper range has seen the biggest growth, with sales rising a staggering 111 per cent. This has been driven by a complete overhaul of the category for 2016. Paul said: “Much of our product development focus has been on making growing from seed as easy as possible. Our redesigned sweet and hot pepper range does away with the complicated Scoville Heat scale. Each variety has been given a 1-10 heat rating, from cool & sweet to explosive, allowing gardeners to make a quick informed decision on which varieties are right for them.

Thompson & Morgan is also helping veg growers to take the guesswork out of crop timings in 2016 with All Season Vegetable Collections. Each packet contains at least three top- performing varieties of the same vegetable that can all be sown in one hit but will crop at different stages to give the longest harvest window from a single sowing. The All Season Mange Tout Pea collection for example contains Oregon Sugar Pod, Sweet Horizon and Kennedy for a 16 week harvest from June through to October, while the All Season Leeks collection provides a massive 36 week crop window from August through to the following April.

Thompson & Morgan has a long history as market leader in the mail order supply of seed and young plants, direct to gardener’s doors since 1855. Its award winning website and seasonal catalogues have undergone a massive product expansion through 2015, now listing 10,000+ items covering most areas of garden supply, from sheds, greenhouses and mature plants to garden machinery, composts, fertilisers and hand tools.

Despite this, Paul says Thompson & Morgan remains committed to offering the best selection of garden seeds on the market. He says: “Seed sowing is economy-proof, remaining core to our customers’ garden experience in both good and bad years. Nothing beats the satisfaction of nurturing a seasonal crop from plot to plate, especially when you can make a huge saving against supermarket produce and slash your weekly spend.”
