New life for recycled rubber with Primeur’s 2022 updates Multi-award-winning ECO Garden from Primeur has, since its launch in 2016, generated an important conversation regarding sustainable material innovation. Made from recycled rubber tyres, which would otherwise take upwards of 80 years to decompose, ECO Garden – which includes the stunning Tierra Verde range of self-watering planters – continues to demonstrate to retailers and consumers alike the many benefits that come from breathing new life into this waste product, in turn keeping the tills ringing. With the 2022 season just around the corner, Primeur has added new designs to its offering, all of which will be enjoying their ‘first look’ at Glee 2021 (Hall 20, stand C40-C41).

E

xtending the ECO Garden landscaping offering which is made up of garden borders, steppingstones and decking, will be Primeur’s newest garden border design: Maryland. Drawing on the success of the Carolina border, the new Maryland design – available in grey and earth colourways – draws its design inspiration from traditional log roll, whilst, unlike its wooden counterpart, also boasts a significant number of environmental and application benefits. From UV stability, to crack and rot-resistant, Primeur’s Eco Garden Maryland border is built for longevity and is backed by the company’s proven merchandising display units to drive sales in-store. Furthering its appeal within garden retailers as well as within builders’ merchants and DIY stores, Primeur will also be using Glee to launch a new multi-functional deck board installation option – MultyDeck. This

new cost-effective innovation allows decking to be laid much quicker when compared to the traditional installation process, giving users a multitude of applications including patios, balconies, walkways, allotments and so much more. Like the wider Eco Garden collection, MultyDeck will be made from recycled rubber and will enjoy the same features and benefits.

Glee 2021

Retailers look forward to Glee With the last Glee having taken place in 2019 we asked garden retailers what they were most looking forward to by attending this year’s show. What trends and product areas will they be focusing on? In 2019 there was a definite move towards looking for sustainable and green products. Is this trend still as strong this year despite the pandemic?

M

ike Burks from The Gardens Group said that he would be attending Glee along with a team of buyers. “As I don’t have buying responsibilities, I will use the opportunity to touch base with suppliers,, look for new lines and trends and keep a close eye on sustainability. ustainability. There is still huge interest in this, and we need to keep the momentum up in this area. We will ignore it at ourr peril both commercially and globally. Other trends nds will be looking to tap into are wildlife gardening, organic anic products, and services rather than ‘stuff’. I am hoping ng that attending Glee will provide a bit of normality and d I am hoping to bump into lots of friends to catch up!! dinarily well “The industry has done extraordinarily in the last 18 months surviving and making the most of a tough situation. This is due in no small part to a huge amount of hard th our work undertaken in partnership with

www.gardentradenews.co.uk

suppliers and the trust and comradeship that has built up over the years. GLEE will be an important milestone in the route back to normality.” Gerald Ingram from Planters Garden Centres will be sendingg all their buyers along to Glee and will be looking to buy from aall the categories that are there. “Although the re research suggests customers look for sustainable aand green products we still find that design, loo look, and value are the most prized attributes. Where Wh possible we look to support green produc products but have had our fingers burnt in the pa past. Other trends that we are looking at in include wildflower products, bee and poll pollinator products, and keeping up to dat date with peat-free products. ““Attending Glee presents an ele element of getting back to normal. It w will be good to meet friends and

September 2021 13

Glee 2021 colleagues as well as looking for new suppliers and new products. We hope it will be supported by as many suppliers as possible as it is much easier seeing everyone in one location rather than traipsing around the country looking at showrooms.” Matthew Bent, Managing Director at Bents Garden & Home says his team are very much looking forward to Glee this year. “It will be good to be back and be able to discuss the industry with people on a face to face basis. Green products and sustainability remain key priorities and I think there’s now also a real focus not just on the actual products, but also on how they are packaged, with more eco-friendly containers and wrapping growing in importance. “Something else that has been heightened by the pandemic is the popularity of the staycation. I think it will be something that will continue for the foreseeable future so we will be looking for products and ideas that will help our customers create the perfect home hub, making the home and garden the place to be. Stylish entertaining, relaxation and having fun at home will all be key priorities for 2022.” Andy Bunker, Alton Garden Centre will be looking mainly at compost stoneware and plants “Also, I take in garden décor such as wind spinners and statues, which have seen immense growth with people spending huge amounts on their homes. Stoneware of all types is becoming more of a trend so that area I will pay significant attention to. “The interest in sustainable gardening and green products is not that strong certainly in Essex, talking to my colleagues in the industry it varies from area to area. We are seeing an increased demand for these lines but not off the radar. One main difference is price. On many lines, it is not so relevant e.g., compost. This is especially important as when more peat alternatives start to roll out, they will be more expensive. “I am sure like everyone to get back to seeing my many friends and colleges in the industry and renewing old acquaintances will give me a real buzz. I have said and been quoted previously but we will need a sort of time limit [tongue in cheek] with discussions regarding Covid

etc. Whilst it is unprecedented times, we are there to buy products. I can see possible frustrations where a buyer is waiting to see a supplier who is going through the last 2 years month by month. I am not wishing to sound sarcastic but I am sure you can see my point.” Simon Bourne at GCA North Thames Award winners Perrywood Garden Centre said: “I’m looking forward to Glee and as usual I will go with an open mind. “It will be interesting to see which suppliers have moved forwards, who has stayed the same and who has gone backwards. With the difficulties of travel to the

Kev Turley needs a degree in customers views about Green or Ethical products to navigate Glee

Kev Turley, Lakeside Plant Centre, Telford, told GTN that he is finding Glee and what to order at the moment a minefield. “I am still not convinced by Green or Ethical products. I have always had this idea of it is nice to move this direction and maybe it is up to us to bring customers along. Our sales show a different trend and this is not as important. I had spoken to some of our suppliers as to peat free products and how there is a north south divide in sales. “We always try where possible to use local suppliers especially where growers are concerned. We moved more towards English growers this year like Worfield who are on our doorstep, so delivery gives a low carbon footprint. I think over the next 12 months price is going to have a dramatic effect on sales, already I am not sure what to do over pots and furniture. Are the consumers willing to pay some of the new prices? “We have just put in the new homegrown bird food from Peckish. But if this is a sign of things Peckish Complete is still at present selling out at 5 to 1 ratio. I did though have an interesting request the other day for Organic bird food. Our industry needs to build on our merits and be there to guide, support and advise with the knowledge and expertise we have.”

www.gardentradenews.co.uk

Glee 2021 become a bigger motivator going forward. “We all sell a very similar range of products, and it is important to present them differently from competition, GLEE is a great place to get stimulating ideas on how to present and promote products. “Of course, I am looking forward to attending GLEE, especially after no trade shows for the last two years as are all our buyers.” Carol Paris, Rosebourne CEO commented: “We are really looking forward to getting back to Glee and meeting with suppliers and peers from across the industry. We will be seeking out innovative products across all categories and looking for opportunities to tailor the product to suit our customer demographics. “The drive for sustainability has not gone away and nor will it. It is not just the sustainability of the products themselves but also in the way they are packaged and presented. We are also keen to stock and highlight UKmade/grown products and sharing the stories behind the products with our customers.”

We have had nearly two years without any innovation and newness, so we need innovation to stimulate our customers across all our departments. far east I don’t expect many suppliers to have as much brand new as normal, but I still expect developments and advances. “Sustainability and the environment are still very much a talking point. Many suppliers have already made huge strides forwards in packaging changes and using recycled materials and I think we have now moved from a position where recyclable packaging was desirable to being a must.” The team at British Barden Centres told GTN: “We are looking forward to GLEE and really missed it last year. Key for us is to see existing supplier innovation, new suppliers, and their products. The team will be there in force and can’t wait for the doors to open!” Julian Winfield, Haskins Garden Centres added: “We have had nearly two years without any innovation and newness, so we need innovation to stimulate our customers across all our departments. Over the last two years we have had a lot of new customers visiting our garden centres and we need to be able to show them that our offer and presentation of has moved on since then last visited. GLEE is a great place to visit to stimulate ideas for the next spring season. “As a sector we need to continue developing the range of green products, but in reality, what our customers want is products that work, and the environmental aspect are still secondary. We are all becoming more and more aware of the negative impact our lives have on the environment and so green products will

John Birch at Baytree asks ex England cricket captain Michael Vaughan why Kelkay are not exhibiting at Glee.

John Birch, Baytree Garden centre, took time out from watch test cricket with ex England captain Michael Vaughan to give us his perspective as a landscape area buyer: “I’ll be looking at landscaping, aggregates, slabs, timber etc at Glee. With cement looking to be harder to get hold of this coming year I believe some manufacturers are really going to struggle to keep up with demand, some of our suppliers have found that this year. Hopefully their forecasters will be able to guide them so that through the next few months they can get secure enough stock to be in front of the game. “Timber prices are still up in the air; we have seen increases throughout the season as raw materials have skyrocketed. I’m told that there is a potential for another rise in January due to December’s sale of next seasons quota of timber on the international market. I’ve been told by 2 reliable sources in the garden centre supply chain and 1 area manager for one of the national building suppliers but will be interested at Glee to find out if this is true? “Primeur definitely stood out for me this year with their recycled rubber edgings, they were hugely popular with the customers, and I will be looking to increase their stands at different areas in the garden centre. “Glasglo Pebbles from Decopak (recycled glass) were also popular, as people liked the idea of what it was and where it had come from. “As an observer I’m interested to see what the companies are going to do regarding peat free, not for season 1 but season 2 when the consumer will let us know if it’s any good for their plants. “I’m looking forward to seeing what Mr Harker and Altico brings to the table, Meadow Views patio ranges and aggregate range, Decopaks aggregates and edgings and lastly why aren’t Kelkay exhibiting?”

A Glee Greeting from Woodmansterne The Old Railway Line and Moss & Moor garden centres sing the praises of Woodmansterne’s W-Select Service as they increase card sales and impress customers.

G

reetings card sales should be high on every garden centre’s agenda when planning your visit to Glee, following the 31% growth in card sales from 2019 to 2021 reported by GTN Bestsellers. Analysis of Epos data provided to GTN Bestsellers indicates that greeting card volumes have grown by 40% since 2017, so making the best decisions for supply, merchandising and management of greetings cards to maximise the opportunity is key to delivering increased customer satisfaction. GTN has been investigating the success of Woodmansterne’s W-Select service at The Old Railway Line and Moss & Moor garden centres who have both recently moved to the W-Select service. You can find out more at Glee, Hall 20, stand 20A10-B11.

Katie Eckley, Operations Director, The Old Railway Line Garden Centre

Customers love the new card ranges at The Old Railway Line At The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, customers travel an hour or so to visit the rural Mid-Wales 3 ½ acres site, so the family team have to work every inch of space hard to get maximum potential from it. Operations Director, Katie Eckley, explained why they moved to W-select: “I was first attracted by the quality of the cards and minimal packaging as we are looking at all areas of the business to reduce waste where possible. The simple paper smart seal holding the card and envelope together is a great solution to removing plastic from our stands while preventing the issue of cards and envelopes becoming accidently separated and envelopes left behind.

“The service has been excellent all round. The initial set up was very well organised, the office updates us weekly with order confirmations and new barcodes, plus images ifi requested and our sales agent Brendan regularly r does our merchandising and ensures tthe stands are looking full and fresh at all times. “Customers have commented on the quality of the cards and the new designs and brands have gone down really well, especially Rosie Made a Thing and Emma Bridgewater. Our team have noticed how the area feels light, spacious and much easier to shop. Sales have been fantastic, since we opened on 22nd March, we have seen a 36% increase on cards when comparing with 2019 and comparing sales last month with July 2020 we saw a 50% increase. “The service and sales have been more than we could have asked for and the whole team were excellent with the switch over. I would recommend Woodmansterne to anyone looking for a refresh with a high-quality greeting card offering.

The fact that all the cards are recyclable, glitter and plastic free also fits with Moss & Moor ethos. “As a brand-new centre, we had already decided on the look and feel of our card department and had done extensive research into the local demographics. Woodmansterne worked with us to select the range and sales have outperformed expectation. Jayne our sales representative has been enormously supportive in ensuring regular replenishments are done to ensure we never run out of cards!

PHOSTROGEN PLANS A GROWTH SPURT FOR SEASON 2022 WITH A REBRAND AND SIGNIFICANT EXPANSION OF ITS PRODUCT RANGE FOR MORE THAN 60 YEARS, British brand Phostrogen has been delivering the performance that people need to get the most from what they grow, making them proud of what they have created. Despite many changes in gardening habits through the decades, one thing has remained the same – Phostrogen’s purpose: to enable British gardeners to reap more from their endeavours.

As part of the next stage in the brand’s history, Phostrogen has unveiled a rebrand and significant expansion of its product range. Until now the brand has been famed for having one hero product – it’s All Purpose Plant Food. However, throughout 2022 the range will expand to 11 different products with the key introductions of new liquid feeds as well as organic options too, to offer a full range of products under one brand name. All of the organic range is certified by Organic Farmers and Growers (OF&G). The refreshed appearance blends heritage, provenance and modernism, with clear signposting making it easy for the customer to see why the product is right for them, whilst providing the reassurance that the Phostrogen name brings.

Phase one of the relaunch consists of 11 products, including the introduction of liquids and organic feeds: ALL PURPOSE PLANT FOOD Soluble, available in 400g, 800g and 2kg ALL PURPOSE PLANT FOOD Liquid, available in 1L ORGANIC ALL PURPOSE PLANT FOOD Granules, available in 800g ORGANIC ALL PURPOSE PLANT FOOD Liquid, available in 1L ORGANIC LAWN FEED Granules, available in 88sqm and 375sqm ORGANIC TOMATO FOOD Liquid, available in 1L ERICACEOUS PLANT FOOD Granules, available in 800g

The hero product, Phostrogen All Purpose Plant Food, has been the tried and tested go-to plant feed for generations because it works by providing all of the important nutrients that plants need in one balanced feed, in a pure form, and with no wastage. Everything within the formulation is a plant nutrient, so consumers are paying for only what they need. It promotes healthy green foliage, abundant flowers and fruit and can be used on all ornamental and edible plants indoors and out, including seedlings and lawns. New to the range is an organic version of the All Purpose Plant Food, which promotes the same healthy, strong growth and is enriched with seaweed, for organically bigger plants, better blooms and more vegetables - engaging with an organic-conscious customer base which increased in value by 96% in 2020.* Both products are available in liquid and soluble options. Three further organic products complete the range, including Liquid Tomato Food, Ericaceous Plant Food and Lawn Food, providing a complete package for all gardeners.

Onduline making a stand e for Alton Garden Centre When it comes to selecting new products to display in Essex’s largest garden centre, Andy Bunker, Director at Alton Garden Centre, knows the importance that Point of Sale (PoS) displays havve on driving sales. Here, Andy talks about ONDULINE’s innovative approach and how the leading supplier of lightweight roofing sheets is helping Alton’s increase sales with its EASYLINE range.

C

urrently celebrating its 50th year in business and recognised as one of the most prestigious garden centres in the South East, it’s no surprise that the directors of Alton Garden Centre are extremely selective with the choice of home and garden products that go on display. Stocking an extensive range of garden buildings, the company is famous for its award-winning displays, many of which they are able to create in-house to suit the design of the overall store. And one solution that has been given its own dedicated area in the garden centre is ONDULINE’s EASYLINE range, which is made up of lightweight and compact sheets and ridges that help improve the overall appearance and lifespan of a roof in comparison to traditional roof felt. As Alton Garden Centre comes to the end of its second season working with the lightweight roofing system manufacturer,

ARS Pruning reaching new heights. Since the launching of ARS Corporation back in 1876 a lot has changed from their first “Tobacco Hocho” a knife to cut Tobacco. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Hocho does not make todays catalogue of products, but there are now 120 of the finest cutting tools available worldwide to choose from. All manufactured in Japan using the highest quality steel and all hold the traditional ARS core values from 145 years ago – Quality and innovation leading to satisfaction and deep impression. Focusing predominantly on perfecting the more common tool such as handsaws, shears secateurs and loppers it took until 1995 for ARS to burst through the ceiling of the pruning market with the first long reach pruner. A device now so commonly used amongst professional gardeners, aspiring gardeners, and the older gardener. The lightweight aspect and ability to cut stems cleanly and accurately, coupled with the ability to stay grounded as appose to up a 6ft ladder (or higher!) has proved as popular as dreamed. Today the ARS range, which is founded and handed through 4 generations of the Takigawa family, is available in the UK through Sorbus International Ltd – also a family-owned business who have been working closely with ARS since 2010. The 2nd generation of Sorbus is now coming through and is adding energy and optimism to where they can take this “sleeping giant” ARS (Always. Razor. Sharp.).

The seven C’s of wry… Boyd J Douglas-Davies, HTA President

I

feel a wry smile coming on as I think back to the conversations had with HTA Board members three plus years ago when I was approached regarding the possibility of becoming President. My reference notes of those meetings remind me of various phrases…. “It’ll be a settled time”, “Brexit will have happened during Adam’s time”, “You should have one of the quietest presidency’s in living memory”. Oh my, how they were all so right…. not! But far from cussing them all for slightly inaccurate predictions I’m proud and pleased to have been able to play a small part in the HTA’s history over the last two years. As I approach the end of my presidency, I can see so

Boyd Douglas-Davies took over the Presidency of the HTA from Adam Taylor at Glee 2019. He hands over the mantle to Brett Avery later this month.

we are a green industry - despite the claims of some in the media from time to time…

much progress has been made by our industry despite the challenges of Brexit and the horrors of Covid. Collaboration – within hours of “Lockdown1” being announced all industry organisations were in discussion and plans were being contemplated around the best way to lobby government. I am certain that we would not have generated the high levels of positive press coverage without working together. Daily calls settled into a weekly pattern and continue to this day on a now monthly basis. It is absolutely vital that we don’t lose sight of the benefits of collaboration and the various trade bodies must continue to work closely for the good of all. Considerate – for some life has become more complicated whilst others have looked to simplify and declutter. Individual opinions have become more important than ever, so we need to embrace all lifestyles and ensure we are accommodating as many as possible through what we do. Concern for the environment is growing at the fastest rate ever known. We can’t ignore this. In fact, we should embrace this as our industry is the single best placed to help make a difference. The products we provide are at the root of the solution and we mustn’t forget this. Growers and suppliers to retail have had a challenging time over the last 2 years and as customers we must be considerate of their problems. Showing a little understanding and consideration for their problems will go a long way. Confidence – we are a green industry - despite the claims of some in the media from time to time. We should never lose sight of this and should shout from the treetops about the good that we do for the planet. This confidence shouldn’t drift towards complacency though and we must always back up our claims with credible and understandable evidence. Over the last couple of months, I have had the opportunity to visit several of the major trial grounds in the UK. Everything from lawn treatments to best petunias and peat-free

mixes is being trialled right now. How much do you know about these trials, speak to your suppliers and share this information with your customers – they’ll be fascinated. Colleagues – along with our customers our colleagues have faced immense personal and workplace challenges. Take time to better understand your colleagues needs both in and out of work. The end of labour shortages is not even close yet so looking after the team you’ve got and making your business the employer of choice will become business critical. Whilst plants might be a fast-growing trend we have some way to go to make horticulture a well-trodden career path. To ensure the industry flourishes for years to come we need far more to join it. Catering – its place within garden centres may have changed for ever post covid but it’s not game over; far from it! The popularity of it, since it fully reopened a

few weeks ago, proves that customers love to eat, drink and be merry with family and friends in garden centres. However, expectations are higher than ever and as we will have to charge more to cover the many increased costs those expectations will continue to rise. Have you taken the time during enforced catering closures to critically review what you do? Creativity – the key to our industry for years gone by and years to come. We have faced many challenges and creative solutions have served us well time after time. For independent horticultural businesses to flourish they need to retain this skill. Customers love the innovation seen across the best centres in the UK. Events such as Greenfingers Garden Re-Leaf Day, National Children’s Gardening Week, a Million Planting Moments and more have proved to capture the imagination of many and generate sales, in centre activity and raise the profile of participants and benefitting charities. Communication - above all others, the most important C of the lot. Without this everything else has little if any impact. Whether it is between grower and customer, importer and shipper, centre to customer or colleague to colleague we need to communicate more than ever before. With the abundance of media channels it should be easier but in fact it is often more difficult as we choose the wrong methods. Yes, customers and colleagues have embraced digital technology but as we return to a mask free world let’s not forget the value of faceto-face communication. Allowing your teams time to engage with each other and their customers will be invaluable. Video conferences and webinars have taught us to listen without interrupting – make use of this newfound skill at every opportunity; listen, understand and solve happily (L.U.S.H.) should be the industry mantra going forward. So as I sign off my Presidency of the HTA, my words of wisdom for my soon to be appointed successor – Brett Avery of Farplants – are “It’s going to be fine, the industry is in great shape and the world is our friend”.
