Garden centres busy despite snow and cold

As the country wrapped up against the snow and freezing conditions over the weekend of Garden Re-Leaf and Mother's Day, garden centres throughout the land were encouraged by an increase in buying activity in their stores.

It seems that many centres made the most of the opportunities presented by Garden Re-Leaf and Mother's Day, and that gardeners responded by buying essential products for themselves and presents for the Mums.

“The response to the second Garden Re-Leaf Day has been fantastic,” said the campaign’s founder, Hillview Garden Centre Chief Executive Boyd Douglas Davies.

“The industry has really embraced the event and firmly established it as the first major profile-raiser on the gardening calendar – something that’s much needed, given it seems we can no longer rely on the British Spring weather arriving when we really want it!

“We would like to say a huge thank you to every retailer, supplier, editor and celebrity who took part in Garden Re-Leaf Day or supported in any way. We are hoping for an excellent total raised, and look forward to confirming that amount in the summer.”

The GTN Bestsellers data suggests that gardeners are using the cold spell to buy  products now in preparation for some warmer days ahead. It seems the whole nation is itching to get growing.

Lighting, pruning, lawn care and cleaning products have been selling in large numbers as consumers wait expectantly for the outside temperatures to rise.

New products are also showing up prominently in the GTN Bestsellers Garden Products chart with the biggest move being made by Kaemingk LED Solar Stainless Steel Garden Light, which enters the Top 50 for the first time at No 5.

Yeoman Soft Grip Secateurs in Raspberry Red and Grape Purple are also new entries at Nos 9 and 10 respectively.

The fourth new entry is Westland Hero Paving & Decking Cleaning Captures, which have reached No 21.

The final two newcomers are Scheurich Wild Berries Planter (No 43) and Gardman Solar Glass Jars (No 46).

Bayer Toprose 1kg is the highest climber, moving up 15 places to No 24, whilst the best performing re-entry is Gardman Wind Chime Light at No 29.

The top four products are non-movers with Fito Drip Feeder for Orchids retaining top spot for yet another week.
