As the Glee exhibition gets set to celebrate half a century at the heart of the garden retail sector, the organising team is looking for your input. In the past 50 years, Glee has seen thousands of exhibitors and visitors pass through its doors, with hundreds of thousands of new products launched since the show’s humble beginnings in 1974. To celebrate the newness and passion that have shaped Glee and the broader garden centre market during this time, the hunt is now on to find the people and product that have driven the most change over the past five decades.
Whether advocating for sustainability or using their influence to increase the reach of horticulture, many diverse people have left their mark on the world of garden retail. They might be suppliers, retailers, industry pundits, or those who have undertaken roles across the full spectrum. Whatever their role, all of them have been integral to Glee's growth, and their work has helped maintain gardening as one of the nation's best-loved pastimes.
Or perhaps the best memories of Glee involve a larger-than-life character. This person may play a starring role in Glee’s memoirs, providing endless smiles, friendly advice and happy recollections from those that knew them pacing the aisles of shows gone by.
Like the people who create them, gardening products have also generated pivotal moments of change. From finally tackling an age-old problem, formulating an innovative bestseller opportunity, opening a meaningful dialogue about gardening's impact on the planet, or simply using technology to make gardening more accessible for the modern consumer, there have been many hero products over the past half century.
Now is the time for Glee's audience to vote for their own heroes and celebrate the people and product they think have had the most impact on Glee's future and that of the garden retail sector.
Matthew Mein, Event Director at Glee, said: "The gardening world has changed so much from the early 70s, with each decade ringing in exciting new trends and innovation. Throughout all of this, Glee has maintained a constant presence, year-after-year providing a place where the garden retail sector can come together to inspire, network and educate. Now, we want to celebrate those who have left a mark in a fun and reflective look back on Glee's half-century. We're excited to see the nominations, find out the eventual winners, and are prepared for a tidal wave of nostalgia and questionable haircuts!"
Glee connects the garden industry to inspire change, drive growth, and promote innovation. To find out more or to register your interest in exhibiting, please visit www.gleebirmingham.com or call +44 (0)203 3545 9752.

A dedicated team from British Garden Centres recently volunteered their time to support St Andrew’s Hospice in Grimsby. The green-fingered crew, made up of James Ducker, Events Manager, Eve Kerrigan, Content Creator, Jill and Phill from Brigg Garden Centre and ambassador Jayne Hickling lent their expertise to revitalise the hospice’s grounds and Greenfingers’ pirate-themed garden.
To maintain the garden’s splendour and ensure it and the hospice grounds continued to be a source of joy, the British Garden Centres team recently rolled up their sleeves to carry out essential tidying and maintenance work. With gloves, shovels and rakes in hand, their weeding and pruning breathed new life into this cherished space.
Created by the Greenfingers Charity in 2018, the special pirate garden offers a safe and therapeutic escape for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Originally a grassy area with limited accessibility, the garden was transformed into a magical pirate adventure, complete with sensitive lighting and a wheelchair-accessible water feature, to make a sensory-rich environment where children can explore, play, and have fun outdoors connecting with nature. British Garden Centres played a vital role in the garden’s creation by generously donating plants and ensuring a vibrant and inviting space for young patients and hospice staff.
Michelle Rollinson, CEO at St Andrew’s Hospice said: “We are extremely grateful for the help we have received from the team from British Garden Centres, who have spent today volunteering in the gardens at St Andrew's Hospice. The gardens play a vital part in the environment at the hospice. Our children and adult patients and their families, enjoy spending time in the gardens, being around nature, and spending time outside can significantly reduce levels of anxiety and improve wellbeing.”
Eve Kerrigan from British Garden Centres added: “British Garden Centres are a platinum partner with Greenfingers charity. We’re passionate about their work with building gardens for childrens’ hospices. Over the last 3 years, we have raised £60,000 for the charity and we have a strong bond with them, so wanted to get our hands dirty this time and get out to one of their gardens and help the volunteers create a lovely space for the people who stay here!”
Jayne Hickling, British Garden Centres ambassador and BBC Radio Lincolnshire Gardening Expert also joined the team to volunteer for the day and added: “I’ve been aware of Greenfingers probably for about 3 years now and British Garden Centres support the charity. The idea of gardening for wellbeing, and mental health is really important to me, personally, and enabling people who are going through difficult times actually to have access to green spaces is so important as a way for escape, getting in touch with nature and wellbeing for themselves. When they’re going through, physical trials, being able to just have that time out in a beautiful space is amazing.”
Linda Petrons from Greenfingers Charity said: “We were thrilled to welcome such an enthusiastic team of volunteers from British Garden Centres. The St Andrew’s Hospice garden is a vital oasis for children, their families, and staff, providing a precious space to relax, connect, and enjoy the outdoors. Thanks to the incredible ongoing support of British Garden Centres and so many others, we can continue creating magical outdoor havens in children's hospices nationwide.”

Dobbies Garden Centres is preparing for a colourful autumn as it welcomes 49,000 Chrysanthemum balls into stores this August...
Dobbies Garden Centres is preparing for a colourful autumn as it welcomes 49,000 Chrysanthemum balls into stores this August.
Loved for their eye-catching flowers and versatility, Chrysanthemums are the perfect plant to inject instant colour into borders and containers this summer, with vibrant blooms that will last throughout autumn and help you extend the sunny season in your garden.
Dobbies’ Plant Buyer, Nigel Lawton explains why he thinks Chrysanthemums are expected to be a favourite among Dobbies customers this year. He says: “Chrysanthemums are always a popular plant in late summer as gardeners prepare their outdoor spaces for autumn. However, this year we’re expecting them to appear in even more borders and containers as people shift away from neutral colour palettes and embrace maximalism and colour.
“After a particularly wet summer, gardeners haven’t been able to enjoy their outdoor spaces the way they usually do. Because of this, we’re anticipating colourful plants will be at the top of wishlists as people look to make the most of their gardens before cold weather sets in.
“Not only will Chrysanthemums provide a welcome boost of rich colour this autumn, because they’re hardy perennials, they’ll come back year after year if cared for properly.”
Nigel’s Chrysanthemum care tips:
Chrysanthemums like a fertile but well-drained soil, so before planting, improve your soil with a peat-free multi purpose compost, and mulch well after planting to ensure water retention.
Chrysanthemums will benefit from a sunny spot and regular waterings throughout the season, however, be careful not to overwater as they dislike waterlogged conditions.
Removing faded flowers regularly helps to keep a display looking its best. It also encourages new buds to form, extending to overall display.

The Gardens Group has reintroduced four species of carnivorous plants to its indoor plant range at Castle Gardens in Sherborne, Brimsmore Gardens in Yeovil and Poundbury Gardens in Poundbury.
Sarah, Emmelene and Katie, who run the houseplant departments, have spent months researching and gaining knowledge about these amazing plants and their global conservation status, with the aim of finding an ethical, reliable, and quality supplier.
Within the new range are, Sarracenia, which catch and digest insects in their trumpet-like upright hooded pitchers and ‘Monkey Cups’ (Nepenthes), that display pendulous lidded pitchers to trap insects. Sundews (Drosera) with sticky dew-drop-like tentacles and the Queen of Carnivorous plants, Venus fly trap (Dionaea muscipula) are also available at all three garden centres.
The carnivorous plant collections at each centre have been commercially grown to avoid any impact on native habitats and wild populations. As well as being evolutionary marvels, they are also a solution to naturally control pests at home.
Sarah, the centre manager at Castle Gardens, explains: “Responsible sourcing and minimising our impact on the planet is something we take very seriously at The Gardens Group, so we took the decision to remove these plants from our range until we were confident that we had found a suitable supplier. We are so excited to reintroduce these amazing plants, which have evolved over millennia to live in specific bog habitats, and we hope to inspire gardeners of all ages to explore natural pest control methods. We have planted a number of bog bowls to showcase the colourful displays that can be achieved at home, while creating a microclimate that allows other houseplants to thrive.”

Floral Fantasia, at RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex, is always open to visitors but GTN was invited, along with other members of the press, to see the latest trial of more than 80 sunflowers plus many other plants being assessed for garden performance.
Part of the organising team behind Floral Fantasia are Mike Smith from nearby WD Smith and Sons nursery, breeder Tim Kerley, Roger Seabrook (son of the late Peter Seabrook), Molli Christman who has been looking after the garden for several years, Wayne Early from Volmary, Paul Hansard formerly T&M, Stuart Lowen from Ball and Neil Gow.
Stuart Lowen is seen here with the very compact and bushy sunflower variety ‘Petisol’ ideal for pot / patio / window box use
Mike Smith is seen here with sunflower ’Sunblast’ which is grown from cuttings, not seed, and was performing well in the garden with repeat shows of flowers on stems possibly long enough for cut flower use but seemed to be quite robust and bushy … one to watch out for?
Also at Floral Fantasia was Dr Raghavendra Prasad who spoke about the challenges of the transition towards the successful use of peat free composts. Raghavendra, has been collating information and data about the practical and commercial use of peat free composts. Several of the contributing nurseries are now almost completely peat free.
The day also took in a visit to nursery of WD Smith where Mike explained how the history of their continued investment into sustainable production processes over many years has enabled them to arrive at a stage where they are almost completely peat free and still producing beautiful quality plants … it can be done!
Mike also demonstrated the highly mechanised and precise production techniques the Smiths nursery team use to enable them to maximise space and resources to full commercial potential.
But I was also reminded that no matter mechanised we become we still need staff who are passionate about our quality plants to work alongside the mechanisation to bring the ‘human touch’. This was being brilliantly demonstrated by the packing team at Smiths who were checking and preparing each plant individually, adding labels and prices as required so that they can sell as soon as they arrive in the retail environment

The latest Horticultural Trades Association Market Update for August 2024 reveals steady garden centre sales in a year marked by very wet and unpredictable weather. This was primarily thanks to strong catering, food, and farm shop performance counteracting subdued plant and core gardening sales, which has largely been the story of 2024 so far.
Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the HTA, commented: "The impact of the weather on garden centre sales this year has been quite significant, and July was no exception. Despite being drier and sunnier than July 2023 by the end of the month, some parts of the UK experienced more than the normal monthly rainfall in just the first couple of weeks.
“Sales of plants struggled, with hardy plants down 9% compared to July 2023. Garden furniture sales also took a hit, down 19% against the same period last year. This downturn in garden furniture sales contributed to Average Transaction Values about par with July 2023 despite inflation and down 8% compared to the warmer, drier July 2022.
“However, sales of associated core gardening products like tools and equipment, plant care, and garden features increased by 8%. BBQs and heating sales were boosted by the warmer end of July 2024, rising by 28% compared to the wet July 2023.
“I am pleased to report that garden centre sales overall finished the calendar year to the end of July up by 3% compared to 2023, largely buoyed by strong performances in catering, food and farm shop departments, which saw a 15% year-to-date increase, even as garden and gardening category sales suffered, down 2% year-to-date.
“Our report also shows that consumer confidence continued to improve marginally in July, reaching levels significantly above the prior year, and the inflation rate has stabilised at around 3%. Combined with the appeal of garden centre hospitality, this is promising for footfall and spending as we head towards autumn and Christmas preparations.
“Although positive sales trends in summer months are welcome, these are typically smaller months for garden centre sales, and the broader economic environment remains difficult. Retailers are contending with rising input and labour costs, which place significant pressure on profit margins. We will continue to work closely with our members and the government to advocate for the support our industry needs to navigate these challenges and to ensure its long-term sustainability.”
For further details on the July 2024 market performance, please refer to the full HTA Market Update report, which is available to HTA members on our website.

At the annual opening of its trials ground in Suffolk, Mr Fothergill’s announced the introduction of a new sweet pea with 25p per packet going to the Greenfingers Charity.
The company’s Ian Cross reported a good year to date despite the disappointing weather. He believed experienced gardeners had the confidence to wait for the right conditions before sowing but wondered if novice gardeners had sown early and not had good results. Communication and tailoring its messaging to different sectors, he said, would be key for the future. Sales of the new coir-based seed sowing compost had been encouraging helped by positioning stock directly next to seed racks making it easy for customers to buy both at the same time.
There are new faces in the senior management team who are still settling into their new roles, but for the future new products are on the cards for introduction at Glee and in the new year.
In the trials ground new varieties of flowers and veg were looking healthy and colourful. Salad leaves continue to be popular and blight resistant tomatoes for pots and hanging baskets are a focus.
The area is also the site of a Fleuroselect trial.
Yorkshire Garden Centres has appointed two new managers to lead newly acquired sites in North Yorkshire...
A Bradford headquartered garden centre group has appointed two new managers to lead newly acquired sites in North Yorkshire.
Yorkshire Garden Centres acquired Dean's of York and Scarborough following the retirement of Richard, Helen and Sarah Dean earlier this year. Their retirement, plus that of Jim Cockerton from the Scarborough centre, created vacancies for managers at the two sites.
Experienced garden centre manager Mike Waugh has been appointed as the centre manager at Dean's York, and Adam Bailey has been promoted from within to manage the Dean's Scarborough site where he has worked for 21 years.
Mr. Waugh joins Yorkshire Garden Centres from California Lodge and Ellerker Lodge garden centres in East Yorkshire. Excited about the new role, he said: "I'm looking forward to joining a company with real ambition and drive to take the company forward, and in my role, I'm most looking forward to leading the team to reach these new heights."
Mr. Bailey is looking forward to using his knowledge of the centre and the team to grow the business, relishing "the challenges it will bring and new opportunities."
Both roles will involve leading the teams and making improvements where needed while maintaining high standards across the centres to ensure an exceptional customer experience.
Neil Barwise-Carr, Yorkshire Garden Centres' Head of People and Culture, said: "We're delighted to welcome Mike to the Yorkshire Garden Centres family and to congratulate Adam on his well-deserved promotion. We're looking forward to working with them both and benefitting from their vast experience."
Outside work, Mr. Waugh is a keen woodworker who enjoys spending time with his son doing anything sports-related and walking in the countryside with his partner.
Mr. Bailey spends his leisure time socialising with friends, playing 5 a side football and going to the gym.
The YGC group comprises Tong, Tingley, Otley and Bingley Garden Centres plus Dean's York and Dean's Scarborough. Otley and Bingley were known as Stephen H Smith's before they were acquired by YGC in 2022.

McClaren’s Nurseries in Glasgow hosted a visit and tour for the Agriculture Minister, Jim Fairlie MSP, at a crucial time for the professional horticulture sector.
The use of peat in horticulture, which Minister Fairlie is responsible for, is a complex issue with significant consequences for the industry's present and future outlook. The industry has used peat for decades due to its unique nutritional and moisture retention qualities and as a growing medium for flora of all kinds. Some plant types and species will not perform well without the substance.
The Scottish Government is working on a proposal to ban the sale of peat in horticulture. The Horticulture Trade Association (HTA) and its members, such as McCLaren’s, have stressed the importance of engagement within the sector. Horticulture businesses crucially need time, support, and certainty to fully transition to a peat-free future.
Horticulture businesses have significantly reduced peat use in recent years, with levels now at record lows. However, concerns have been raised that an early, rather than measured, peat ban would damage Scottish businesses and their ability to produce flora. The Scottish Government has yet to publish a date for such a measure.
Adam McGowan, Director at McLaren’s Nurseries, commented: “As one of Scotland's largest growers, we've long been committed to sustainable solutions. We feel that there is still a long way to go for Ministers, in terms of setting out a clear pathway to a peat-free future. Transitioning to peat-free growing is a complex challenge that requires time, support, and viable alternatives— we hope that this was taken on board. We urge industry stakeholders including Scot Govt to advocate for a realistic and supportive approach for Scottish horticulture businesses.”
Stan Green, Chairman of the HTA Scotland Policy Development Group attended the visit, and stated: “We were pleased to be able to arrange this visit with Minister Fairlie, the HTA are keen for constructive and practical dialogue and progress with the Scottish Government. Such fact-finding visits and meetings are valuable to ensure the full experiences of our Members and facts of going to peat-free growing can be established. The industry continues to work to move away from peat use, but this is not a black and white issue, we grow thousands of different species of trees and plants that is enjoyed across Scotland – we are still understanding the various propagation data from peat-free trials.”
Minister for Agriculture and Connectivity, Jim Fairlie MSP commented: “I am grateful to Adam and Daryl from McLaren’s Nursery for sharing their concerns and I was impressed by the scale of operation and dedication to horticulture shown by this family-run firm. I am mindful of the challenges with phasing out peat and learning from those with first-hand experience is always valuable. We will continue to maintain an open dialogue with the sector representatives as we navigate towards a sales ban. The development of our approach will be informed by stakeholder consultation and industry-focused research. We are continuing to explore the potential of alternatives.”

In a rare move, Charles Dowding has endorsed Urban Wyrm and has become its affiliate partner, appearing with them at Glee Birmingham as a special guest on 10th September.

We’re excited for the year to come as we develop and release more of our unique product range.”

Perennial – the charity who supports those who work in horticulture – is inviting the garden industry to participate in a thrilling firewalk fundraiser on 18 October 2024.
The event starts at 3pm, allowing participants to experience the serene beauty of Hever Castle's grounds before facing the flames.
With expert firewalk instructors on hand to provide comprehensive training, you can be confident that your team will be fully prepared to walk across hot coals and blaze a trail for a good cause.
By registering for £25 per person, with a fundraising target of £150, your business will directly contribute to Perennial’s essential services, which include health and financial wellbeing and training and development programmes for individuals in the horticultural industry.
For over 185 years, Perennial has been a reliable safety net for horticulturists in need. They understand the pressures of the job and are here to help when it matters most. Now, more than ever, it’s vital for both organisations and individuals in our sector to support Perennial. By doing so, we can ensure that our industry brothers and sisters are taken care of, no matter what challenges they face.
Neil Miller, Head Gardener at Hever Castle shares his enthusiasm "As a long-time supporter of the fantastic charity Perennial, I literally can't wait to get my boots off and walk across hot coals for them at Hever Castle on the 18 October! We think it will be a really wonderful (and unforgettable) experience and would love as many of our horticultural friends as possible to join us on the day and raise lots of funds for a charity very close to my heart."
“We are delighted to host our second firewalk at such a prestigious and historic location,” says Eleanor Steele, Community Fundraiser at Perennial “The Firewalk is not just about the thrill of the challenge; it’s about coming together as a community to support those who nurture the landscapes and gardens we all cherish. We encourage everyone to join us for an unforgettable evening that promises to inspire and make a real difference.”
Nathan Day, from Plan & Plant, who took part in Perennial’s 2023 firewalk shared his experience “Being able to challenge ourselves and prove that we can tackle anything was great, but to connect with like-minded peers was a lovely reminder that we are part of a wider endearing community. If you have the time or enthusiasm to help others, we highly recommend signing up for their next challenge!"

With GCSE and A Level results released this month, Notcutts is highlighting apprenticeships as a vocational path into horticulture, hospitality and retail careers.
Notcutts offers its own apprenticeship scheme across its 19 garden centres nationally. Colleagues of all ages and at all levels are encouraged to develop their careers through apprenticeship qualifications, with many upskilling into senior leadership roles.
Harry Adams is the Horticultural Section Head at Notcutts Solihull Garden Centre, where he has achieved a Level 3 qualification in Horticulture. Other colleagues in the plant area are also studying towards qualifications through the Royal Horticultural Society to enhance their plant knowledge.
Harry said: “Working in horticulture is an opportunity to continuously learn. The qualifications offered by Notcutts are a great way to ensure I am able to grow my knowledge and put it into practice at the garden centre.”
While horticulture is at the heart of Notcutts, the garden centre group also highlights the career opportunities for hospitality and retail, through its restaurants and wide range of retail including gifts, clothing, homeware and pet supplies.
Charlotte Baines, Assistant Restaurant Manager at Notcutts Wheatcroft Garden Centre near Nottingham, has successfully completed a Level 4 Hospitality Manager qualification.
Reflecting on her experience, Charlotte said: "I really enjoyed my qualification, it gave me a greater understanding of the business and the wider hospitality industry and trends."
Similarly, Jenny Williams at Notcutts St Albans Garden Centre has completed her Level 4 Retail Manager qualification. Jenny appreciated the comprehensive curriculum, noting, "I enjoyed learning about a range of subjects including leadership and team performance."
Sarah Dempsey, HR Director, Notcutts, said: “At Notcutts, we encourage everyone to take advantage of our apprenticeship opportunities to develop their careers and achieve their potential. It was in 1898 where Notcutts’ founder Roger Crompton Notcutt took on his first apprentice, and we are proud to continue nurturing apprentices in our garden centres today.
“We are committed to investing in our all our teams and we offer the flexibility for individuals to study towards their qualifications alongside their day-to-day role, achieving practical experience where they can apply their learning.
“Whether it's gaining a deeper understanding of the hospitality sector, mastering retail management, advancing horticultural expertise, or developing senior leadership skills, there are a wide range of apprenticeship opportunities available and we support all colleagues to get involved.”

An adventure park at a South Leeds garden centre hosted a summer party for Castleford Tigers recently.
91 of the rugby league club's season ticket holders, players and families enjoyed an afternoon of fun with mascot JT at Mission Out at Tingley Garden Centre.
Among the people enjoying the fun was first team prop forward Liam Watts: "JT's summer party was a well-organised day out for the family. There was raft racing, obstacle courses, zip lines, mini golf and much more. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon, and even parents joined in. It was a brilliant afternoon for everyone."
"The weather wasn't great, but it didn't stop everyone having a great time as they jumped on giant pillows, raced on rafts and scrambled on the assault course. We can't wait to welcome JT and his crew back, " said Gemma Simpson, manager of Mission Out.
It was the second time that Mission Out has hosted an event for Castleford Tigers. In December, Tingley Garden Centre welcomed players and mascot JT to an exclusive family ice skating session for their business partners.
Suitable for children aged seven and over, Mission Out is a 4.8-acre outdoor adventure play attraction that features high ropes, water activities, a jump challenge pillow, giant swings, den-building, and adventure golf. It is open daily during the summer holidays and during term time for school and corporate team-building days.

The autumn edition of PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt has been a great success. The positive trading atmosphere, satisfied exhibitors, and thousands of visitors made this third edition a resounding success.
PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt: The Place to Be!
The fully occupied exhibition floor was bustling with visitors on both days. Teun van Geest of Vreugdenhil Bulbs & Plants had a very positive experience during his first participation in the fair. "It actually exceeded expectations. I made many new contacts and renewed old ones. The stand location and organization were top- notch, and I really enjoyed the compliment-givers on the second day." Jantine van der Kwaak of Jac. Niekerk B.V. is also very enthusiastic. "This fair is ideal for meeting your existing customers, but also for making new contacts. We spoke with many visitors from the Netherlands, Belgium, and England and are very satisfied with the excellent care provided at the fair."
Exhibition manager Marjolein Wieckardt also looks back on a successful edition. "Right from the first day of the fair, there was a positive vibe, and it remained throughout the event. Both exhibitors and visitors speak of a successful edition. This positive sentiment is reflected in the number of bookings for next year. The head and corner stands for the autumn edition of 2025 are already almost sold out."
Green Retail Awards
At a fair focused entirely on garden plants, there was also plenty of attention for new innovations. On the first day of the fair, the Green Retail Awards winners were announced in the categories Best Novelty and Best Market Innovation. The awards went to Agastache 'Agapk' (BEELICIOUS PINK), submitted by Vitroflora Grupa, and Naturosa®, submitted by Meer Plant BV.
For the Visitor's Favorite Award, visitors could cast their votes using green balls. At the close of the fair, it was clear that Catharanthus roseus Soirée® Light Pink Dark Eye, submitted by MNP / Suntory, was overwhelmingly the favorite plant of the visitors.
Green Future Hub
In the Green Future Hub, attention was given to demonstrably sustainable production. On both days, a round table discussion was held with specialists from the consulting organization GTC+, industry organizations Anthos, LTO, and Intratuin Nederland, certification body MPS, and Griffioen Wassenaar. The topic of discussion was the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, a directive for companies to report on their impact on people and the climate) and whether certification is sufficient to meet these requirements. The overall conclusion was that steps have already been taken, and the CSRD also offers opportunities for companies. However, there remains a significant challenge for industry organizations to raise awareness and get all growers on board.
PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt, the Green Retail Fair, together with the Autumn and Spring Fairs of GROEN-Direkt, is the key meeting place for green professionals and suppliers. Agastache 'Agapk' (BEELICIOUS PINK) and Naturosa have won Green Retail Awards at the 2024 autumn edition of PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt. The Green Retail Awards are presented in three categories: Best Novelty, Best Market Innovation and Visitors’ Favourite, with one winner in each category. The Visitors’ Favourite, chosen by the fair’s visitors, is always announced at the end of the fair.
Best Novelty
Vitroflora Grupa from Dobrcz (Poland) has won the Green Retail Award in the Best Novelty category with its Agatache 'Agapk' (BEELICIOUS PINK) – a lavishly flowering cultivar whose large pink flower spikes contrast beautifully with the dark pink calyxes. The attractive, healthy, full plants are neatly presented, said the jury. In addition to the Best Novelty, another two plants were awarded a gold medal: Hydrangea paniculata 'LC NO21' (GROUNDBREAKER BLUSH) submitted by Alex Schoemaker Living Creations BV from Boskoop, and Weigela florida 'Floraclar' (BUBBLY WINE) submitted by Valkplant B.V. from Hazerswoude-Dorp. Four plants won a silver medal and thirteen were awarded a bronze one. The plants submitted for the Best Novelty were evaluated by the independent expert jury of the Koninklijke Vereniging voor Boskoopse Culturen (Royal Boskoop Horticultural Society). Of the 42 plants submitted for the contest, a total of 35 were eventually inspected.
Best Market Innovation
The Green Retail Award for the Best Market Innovation was for Naturosa® submitted by Meer Plant BV from Meer (Belgium). The jury was very impressed by all the products submitted in this category and unanimous in its choice of Naturosa®. “This concept offers great benefits in many fields: biodiversity, ease of use, low peat content and resistance to diseases. The concept comprises several different strong varieties, and more will be added in the future. Another advantage is that the POS material can be developed in consultation with the customer,” said the jury.
A total of fourteen products were evaluated. Second place was for CO2-Tree submitted by Van Oploo Tuinplanten from Bavel. From the jury’s report: “Although Paulownia is not a new product, the CO2 theme gives it a relevant message. It is a topical theme, but the market for this niche product is small.” Third came Fargesia One Boo submitted by Plant Select NV from Rijckevorsel (Belgium). “The One Boo concept focuses on the different shades of colour in the bamboo range. The developed POS material clearly and transparently explains to consumers for which applications the product can be used,” said the jury.
The members of the Best Market Innovation jury are representatives of international retail organisations from Scandinavia, Austria, Germany, England, France and the Netherlands who are all responsible for the purchase of outdoor plants. The winning concept will be included in the range of the Scandinavian retail organisation Plantagen in 2025.
PLANTARIUM|GROEN-Direkt - the place to be!
Besides the presentations of the products submitted for the Green Retail Awards, the rest of the fair floor is completely filled with a wide variety of stands. GROEN-Direkt’s Autumn Fair features 5000 sample batches, a concepts plaza, the presale of Christmas trees and a range of Mediterranean products. Some of the novelties are directly available here. All this makes the combined fair unique for purchasers of European garden plant retail organisations.
Green Future Hub
The Green Future Hub focuses on demonstrable sustainable production. Certification is one of the topics covered here. Both fair days feature an hour (from 11 a.m. until 12) of round-table discussions with specialists of the consultancy organisation GTC+, branch organisations Anthos, LTO and Tuinbranche Nederland, the certification organisation MPS and the Griffioen Wassenaar nursery. Visitors and exhibitors can visit the Green Future Hub at any time of the day to discuss aspects of this topic.

This exciting collaboration marks the launch of T&M’s new line of Sprouting Seeds, which is set to inspire gardeners and food enthusiasts alike.
T&M has been at the forefront of the gardening industry for over 160 years - consistently providing customers with high-quality products and expert advice - and its new range of sprouting seeds embodies the company's dedication to innovation and quality.

The Milk Shed Café, situated a short distance from T&M's headquarters, is a staple in the local community. Known for its cosy atmosphere and delectable homemade dishes, the café shares T&M’s commitment to quality and community. The Milk Shed Café incorporates sprouting seeds into their menu, offering customers a taste of the freshly picked, vitamin-packed sprouts in various dishes.
Head of B2B Sales Manager, Sarah Dodsworth, commented: “Sprouting seeds are extremely nutritious and easy to grow - you only need a windowsill. The Garden Centre Association’s July Barometer of Trade (BoT) figures reveal some positive results for the month.
Nine of the recorded 13 categories, when compared to July 2023, were up, according to data submitted by the GCA’s member garden centres.
Peter Burks, GCA CEO, says: “July was a much more encouraging month for our members with a decent increase in sales over July last year. It was great to see a good increase in furniture and BBQ sales after a long period of negative figures.
“Good also to see hardy plants producing a nice increase, which I hear has carried on into August. It certainly looks like it was a month when people actually got into their gardens, as hard landscaping was up almost 9% and garden sundries up more than 10%.
“Our smaller centres did particularly well with the Local Garden Centre category enjoying an increase of more than 10% compared to last year.”
The top performing category was clothing at +11.47%, when compared to the same month in 2023, with garden sundries next at +10.73, and hard landscaping in third position at +8.76%.
Catering came in next at +7.11%, then furniture & BBQ at +6.04%, the miscellaneous category came in at +5.09% and food hall/farm shop +4.81%. Seeds & bulbs was +4.8% and outdoor plants at +4.2%.
Gifts was -0.35% and houseplants at -2.71%, pets & aquatics -4.73% and understandably Christmas at the rear at -21.05%.
The GCA BoT reports are compiled using actual sales figures and provide an up-to-date trading position statement. They are made available mid-month following the end of the prior month after all member garden centres have submitted their results.
The BoT allows members to compare their trading positions with other centres.

Marking its second year of using products from leading British peat-free brand, RocketGro, River Cottage has been shouting about another season of outstanding results – from great germination to improved biodiversity – with its guests clamouring to know the name of its compost supplier.
River Cottage brought RocketGro on as exclusive compost supplier in 2023, using its products across the smallholding. The culinary organisation – a huge advocate for organic and peat-free growing – cultivates much of what it uses at the farm in the iconic Kitchen Garden, poly tunnels and Market Garden, using RocketGro’s growing media range to propagate these vegetables, fruits, salads and herbs.
Now, in the second year of growing with RocketGro, River Cottage Head Gardener Jonny Callis has nothing but the highest praise for the range, as he reflects on the ongoing success of the collaboration.
In a recent blog post, he said: “This is River Cottage’s second year with RocketGro as our compost supplier, and the fantastic results we found in 2023 have continued into this growing season. We get a huge amount of interest from our guests in which suppliers we use, and I’m always happy to tell RocketGro’s story – supplying renewable energy to thousands of homes and creating local, peat-free, biologically-active compost as a by-product.”
As a real testament to the performance of RocketGro’s collection, Jonny highlights several stand-out products, including its Seed & Cutting Compost, Fruit & Veg Compost and the flagship Magic Mulch, describing how these organic, peat-free mixes have enhanced his team’s growing endeavours at River Cottage HQ.
Magic Mulch was used over winter, resulting in beds that were “full of life, dark and friable, and great to work with” when it came to planting. Jonny explained: “As we plant out, the fibres of Magic Mulch are incorporated, adding to organic matter in our heavy clay East Devon soil.”
RocketGro’s Seed & Cutting Compost, once again, delivered “high germination rates with the right amount of drainage”, whilst RocketGro’s Fruit & Veg compost was used to top up the beds in River Cottage’s polytunnels, getting tomatoes, cucumbers and basil get, “off to a flying start”.
Jonny concluded: “Whilst our various homemade composts and feeds form the backbone of our soil husbandry at River Cottage, partnering with RocketGro has given us the flexibility and volume to expand our no-dig growing areas and continue to increase the biodiversity of micro-organisms in our soil, ultimately leading to the healthy, nutrient dense, organic fruits and vegetables upon which our food philosophy is based.”
RocketGro Managing Director, Toby Thomas said: “Our partnership with River Cottage is something we are very proud of and passionate about. It is a joy to collaborate with a fellow West Country business, particularly one that shares our ethos about organic, sustainable, peat-free growing. We have immense admiration for what River Cottage does and are delighted to be its exclusive compost provider.
“We have every confidence in how our products perform, so it’s great to hear that Jonny and his team continue to have such success using them at River Cottage HQ. We are also thrilled to hear that so many River Cottage guests are keen to find out more about RocketGro, and that Jonny is actively sharing our story. RocketGro’s journey is a unique one and we remain steadfast in our mission to turn more people onto the power of low carbon, peat-free and coir-free organic gardening. Looking ahead, we look forward to continuing our fruitful relationship with River Cottage.”
All RocketGro products are chemical free, 100% organic approved, British grown, sourced and manufactured, and are the by-product of renewable energy production. Packaging is also 100% recyclable.
