Inspired by Kilimanjaro? Help choose the Greenfingers Charity’s next once-in-a-lifetime challenge

Hot on the heels of the incredible success of the Greenfingers Charity’s Kilimanjaro challenge, which has now raised more than £300,000 for the charity, thoughts are already turning to the next big adventure, and supporters are being invited to help choose where it will be.

With so many people feeling inspired by the achievements of the Kilimanjaro team, the Greenfingers Charity is now looking ahead to its next once-in-a-lifetime overseas fundraising challenge for 2028, with two incredible destinations in the running: Machu Picchu in Peru or the Great Wall of China.

Both challenges are planned for October 2028, giving would-be adventurers plenty of time to prepare, train and fundraise before taking on an unforgettable experience in support of the charity’s work creating magical gardens for children and families who spend time in hospices.

Two incredible destinations

The first option would see participants head to Machu Picchu, following a rewarding trek through the spectacular Ancascocha Trail. Surrounded by snow-capped Andes, raging rivers and remote communities, the 10-day adventure promises dramatic scenery and the chance to experience traditional Peruvian culture. The challenge is graded tough.

Alternatively, supporters can vote for the Great Wall of China Discovery, a nine-day challenge taking in approximately 10,000 uneven steps, climbs and mountainous terrain. Participants would trek through the Yan Mountains to Gubeikou before tackling the famous ‘Heavenly Staircase’, with spectacular views across the surrounding landscape. This option is graded challenging.

Whichever destination comes out on top, the aim will remain the same: to bring people together for an extraordinary shared experience while raising vital funds for the Greenfingers Charity.

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising and Communications at the Greenfingers Charity, said: “Kilimanjaro was such an extraordinary experience, and the fact that it has now raised more than £300,000 for the charity is something we are incredibly proud of. What has been just as special is seeing how inspired people have been by the team. We have had so many conversations with supporters who have said they would love to take on something similar, so it felt like the perfect time to start looking ahead to our next overseas challenge.

“For 2028, we wanted to make the decision together. Machu Picchu and the Great Wall of China are both truly once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and we cannot wait to see which one our supporters choose.”
