Sproutl, the on-line marketplace for independent garden and outdoor living brands is to close immediatley.

Set up with £6.5m of equity funding in 2021 the business had partnerships with independent garden centres who fulfilled orders.

A statement from the company today said: "It is with heavy heart that we have made the tough decision to cease operations for Sproutl in its current form as a marketplace business.

"While we wholeheartedly believe in our team who we will be supporting through this time, and in each of the amazing garden centres and gardening brands who supported us on our journey, the current broader economic circumstances have forced us to make some tough decisions about the future of the company and the most responsible use of the investment we have had to date.

"Businesses everywhere, including ours, are facing rising costs of delivery, packaging and reduced consumer spending. The ongoing period of economic uncertainty for consumers across the UK, in addition to broader global economic challenges, meant that the headwinds we are facing were just too strong to continue."

Garden centres listed as partners on the marketplace include: Fakenham Garden Centre, Hayes Garden World, Longacres, Middleton Nurseries, Polhill, Rosebourne and Tates of Sussex.

GTN Xtra understands other garden centres were in the process of signing up to the marketplace but that process has now ceased.

Group turnover grew significantly, despite the continuing impact of Covid-19 in the early part of the year, to £161m – up from £125m in the previous period...

British Garden Centres, the UK's largest family owned garden centre business, has released financial results for the year ending 31st December 2021. Group turnover grew significantly, despite the continuing impact of Covid-19 in the early part of the year, to £161m – up from £125m in the previous period.

Phillippa Stubbs, Director of BGC South ltd, commented: “I’m delighted that the business finished the year strongly with all areas of the business operating fully. The team worked hard through the period to ensure the business operated effectively, despite the various restrictions in place.”

The support from suppliers was acknowledged by joint MD of Woodthorpe Hall, Robert Stubbs, “Our relationship with our suppliers is critical to the long-term success of the business. As ever, we are grateful for all the support we received in 2021, and continue to receive. As the business has grown so has our needs and the key suppliers have met our needs on every occasion.”

British Garden Centres operates 61 garden centres across England and Wales and the 5-star rated Woodthorpe Caravan and Leisure Park set in the heart of Lincolnshire. The group grew rapidly, from 10 centres, through 2018 and 2019 with the acquisition of 38 Wyevale Garden Centres and the Hillview Garden Centre group. It has continued to expand with the addition of Harrogate in May 2021 and three further centres in 2022.

Summing up 2021, Charles Stubbs, also joint MD of Woodthorpe Hall, said: “I’m delighted how everyone in the BGC family – colleagues, suppliers and customers – have coped with the various challenges in 2021, it has been a good year! I’m very confident that, together, we are in a fine shape to take the business forward. We aim to be our customers first choice, a suppliers perfect customer and our colleagues home for life.”

Crocus acquires Mind, Body & Soil and SmartPlant

Online plant retailer Crocus has announced that it is expanding its portfolio with the acquisition of the subscription box Mind, Body & Soil and the plant identification app SmartPlant...

Online plant retailer Crocus has announced that it is expanding its portfolio with the acquisition of the subscription box Mind, Body & Soil and the plant identification app SmartPlant. The move will help to position Crocus as a brand that appeals to a fast growing, wellbeing focussed younger demographic whilst also expanding the business into subscription services.

As plants and nature become the antidote to the stress we feel from being so connected to screens, the demand for more indoor plants among city dwellers has soared. This acquisition will see Crocus’ Iris app integrate the functionality of the SmartPlant app and the expansion of Mind, Body & Soil wellbeing boxes, helping to create new, innovative revenue streams.  The merging of  SmartPlant's data and users within the Iris app will create an unrivaled plant identification and care platform and enhance the user experience.

Mark Fane, CEO of Crocus said “Crocus are really excited to have Mind, Body & Soil and George as part of the business. We strive to be best in the market and ensure that we are keeping at the vanguard of trends. This acquisition ensures we are doing just that and will generate new revenue streams, a new audience for Crocus and our new app, Iris.”

In recent years, houseplants have enjoyed a massive boom in popularity, particularly with Millennials and Gen Z. Sales of houseplants at garden centers across the UK were up 81% in July (2020) and increased by nearly 30 percent on a year-on-year basis in 2021.

George Williams, the creator of SmartPlant said: "I am thrilled to be joining Crocus, they are passionate about plants and have a keen focus on sustainability and is a company I have always admired. I am really proud of what we have built over the years and I am looking forward to the next chapter of the journey with the team at Crocus."

Some of the biggest gardens at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show explored the theme of mental health including that of multiple “Best in Show” winner Andy Sturgeon. Gardens have been a refuge for Andy during difficult periods in his own life, so in partnership with Crocus, for The Mind Garden, he created a place where others can connect, share experiences and find comfort together.

Alan Titchmarsh once adroitly remarked that: ‘Crocus offer the ordinary gardener the same choice of plants as the professional’. 31 Gold medals later, Crocus’s collaboration with over 20 of the best designers at the Chelsea Flower Show has allowed them to constantly evolve their plant palate in line with the latest trends.

Crocus’s huge range of over 4,000 plants together with the tools that make it easy for gardeners of all levels to choose, has made them first port of call for anyone shopping online and brought them a turnover of £29m in Financial Year 2021.

The award winning SmartPlant app, the plant care and identification app, was founded in 2014, and since then it has garnered over 800,000 downloads and partnered with over 50 growers and retailers in the Home & Garden sectors. The business launched Mind, Body & Soil during the pandemic to capitalise on the consumer desire for plants and wellbeing. Mind, Body & Soil delivers self-care through plant care and have worked with Pasta Evangelists, Yogi Bare, Timeout & Alice Vincent to name a few. Each month customers receive a plant, pot and selection of products to match the wellbeing or sustainability theme.

Perennial offers home for rent within community housing

Perennial, the charity for people in horticulture, is offering a home for rent within its community housing for retired horticulturists near Cambridge...

Perennial, the charity for people in horticulture, is offering a home for rent within its community housing for retired horticulturists near Cambridge.

The vacant one-bed bungalow is one of six properties owned and managed by the charity as part of its scheme for independent living for those aged 60 or over.

Situated in the village of Barton, the accommodation is newly remodelled to a high standard with both an individual and communal garden, and proximity to local amenities.

Julia Hayne, Director of Services at Perennial says: “We help people working in horticulture find housing at all stages of life whether renting, looking to buy or needing options in retirement. While people often like to remain in their own homes or find housing near their friends and families, our community housing is perfect for someone who’d like to live with like-minded folk. These bungalows are like gold dust. If you’re looking for a fresh start in a lovely little community and meet our housing criteria, please get in touch.”

Nicholas spent his whole working life in the industry with accommodation provided by his employers. He feared where he might end up living once retired and was pleasantly surprised to find his future home in one of Perennial’s retirement bungalows.

He says: “Every resident has a garden around their bungalow for our treasured plants and there are also communal grounds tended by contractors - a great relief to me at hedge cutting time! Five years on I still open my curtains and look over the gardens and feel it’s like being on holiday, which is surely what retirement should be. But I think the most comforting feeling is that I’m nestled under the protection of the Perennial umbrella with help and advice only a phone call away.”

Perennial’s community housing is for anyone (or partners of anyone) who is approaching retirement or is retired from the horticulture sector in the UK. This includes gardeners, nursery owners and workers, garden designers, landscapers, arborists, foresters, garden centre staff, commercial growers, turf maintenance specialists and many more.

Giant veg on show at Cardwell Garden Centre

Youngster Rowan Rough, aged six, from Dunoon, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland discovered there’s not a soup pot big enough to cook the giant veg that were on show at Cardwell Garden Centre.

The garden centre played host to the Strathclyde Leek and Onion Society annual show.

Gardening experts from all over Scotland headed for Cardwell, near Gourock to exhibit their giant veg – with some of the leeks as big as five feet high.

There were more than 40 entries in the prestigious event for the green-fingered veg growers. The show’s overall winner, lifting the Best Exhibit in Show trophy was judged to be Joe Proudlock, from Castle Douglas, in Dumfries and Galloway for his display of six onions dressed from seed he had been growing for months.

Visitors to the garden centre marveled at the displays of enormous onions and king-size carrots and colossal leeks among other vegetables, like potatoes, cauliflowers and beetroot.

And they also enjoyed a weekend of family fun and games with a barbeque, bouncy castle, face painting, a Spooky Treasure Hunt and a fairground carousel.

Cardwell’s retail general manager, Paul Carmichael said: “It’s fantastic to have the Leek and Onion Show make a welcome return to Cardwell after two years because of the Covid restrictions.

“Hundreds of visitors to the garden centre were amazed at the size of the different perfectly-formed veg on display.

“These green-fingered gardeners extraordinaire certainly know their onions!”

RECOUP conference cements its place as one to beat

Plastics recycling charity, RECOUP, again proves its position as the number one conference in the plastics recycling and resources sector with another outstanding day of debate and presentations...

Plastics recycling charity, RECOUP, again proves its position as the number one conference in the plastics recycling and resources sector with another outstanding day of debate and presentations.

Stuart Foster, CEO, of RECOUP in his address highlighted that “we live in a world demanding better environmental protection, circularity and sustainability whilst wanting to hold on to consumerism, low cost, convenience, growth and economic prosperity.”

Foster reiterated that RECOUP, would continue to deliver the organisation’s aims with balance, integrity and evidence. He continued to announce that Morrisons was the latest company to join RECOUP and “if you are thinking of supporting RECOUP, now is the time.”

Tom Heap, of ‘Costing the Earth’ and BBC’s ‘Countryfile’ commented that it was an interesting time both politically and legislatively. Heap referred to the importance of legislation in relation to plastics recycling and resources.

With Heap’s direction, plastic packaging tax, tray-to-tray recycling, investment in chemical recycling, feedstock quality and circular economy principles were debated. All speakers repeated previous conference calls to increase and improve collaboration.

Hayley Lloyd-House, Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Nestlé Waters (UK) Ltd highlighted the positive joint work with RECOUP and drew attention to the ‘The 5 -pillar strategy’ aimed to Reduce, Re-use, & Refill, Redesign and Rethink behaviours.

The panel debated the lack of consistency in kerbside plastics collections and communications as well as UK recycling capacity. With mixed messaging and ‘wish’ recycling causing contamination and a call for the harmonisation of labelling.

Paula Chin, Senior Policy Advisor – Consumption at WWF set the scene in session two by stating that it was important that the sector use the “right material, in the right place and with the right approach.” Chin highlighted products such as disposable vapes and questioned why such products are placed on the market when there is clearly no end-of-life solution. Chin once again called on the delegates to appreciate that the only way forward was to reduce consumption

Rowan Byrne, Marine Plastics Global Lead at Mott MacDonald commented on the issue of plastics in the natural environment particularly rivers and oceans, “to manage something you have to measure it” however, “the challenge with plastics in the environment is the issue gets bigger as plastics get smaller. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there.” Byrne further highlighted that perhaps there should be a ban on wet wipes.

RECOUP launched a number of reports and projects at the event;

  • A Best Practice Guide for UK Plastics Recycling Communications Best Practice Guide for UK Plastics Recycling Communications - RECOUP Recycling
  • Recyclability by Design 2023 and case studies highlighting the importance of recyclability basic principles, material substitution concerns and work in the area of bacon and meat packaging.  www.recoup.org/design
  • ESA Quality Standard for Recycled Plastics with support from the British Plastics Federation, Recycling Association and RECOUP, to define a quality standard for post-consumer recycling.

Policy & Infrastructure Reports - RECOUP Recycling

The afternoon panel was chaired by Sara Banning, Innovation Lead from Innovate UK – UKRI. The panel called for the importance of data to be used for accountability, the need for clear government signals and policies for reuse and prevention targets, a mindset shift towards circular economy and the common theme of the day, collaboration.

For more information about RECOUP, the work they do and how to join please contact www.recoup.org. Next years’ conference is on Thursday 28th September 2023.

Record-breaking attendance at pet trade show

PATS has broken all records with the two-day show at Telford in Shropshire recording its highest ever attendance figures since the event was launch in 2009...

PATS has broken all records with the two-day show at Telford in Shropshire recording its highest ever attendance figures since the event was launch in 2009.

A total of 2,185 retailers and buyers came through the doors of The Telford International Centre, which was 6% higher than PATS Telford last year. It beats the previous record attendance of 2,148 recorded in 2017.

The largest-ever PATS show, staged in three halls for the first time, closed with visitors and exhibitors agreeing it had been a huge success, with the event delivering an unrivalled platform for the launch of hundreds of exciting new pet product innovations.

Organiser Gordon Thomas said many of the companies exhibiting at PATS Telford were eager to point out the quality of people visiting their stands had been of the highest standard.

“Exhibitors told us they met with the key decision makers and buyers, and that was good to hear because we put in place measures that ensured the right people attended.

“Overall, the response to PATS Telford 2017 has been excellent and positive, and proves that the pet industry is firmly behind this show.”

Rob Newsome, director of sales and operations at Danish Design, said: “We’ve attended every exhibition and this year’s event was the busiest ever. It was also the biggest with lots more exhibitors spreading through to three halls, which was great to see in these challenging times. We had a super busy two days and saw so many people looking to place orders and seeking out new products. We look forward to many more shows like this one.”

Assisi Pet Care was exhibiting at PATS Telford for the first time and was delighted with the outcome. Product manager Suzy Broughton said: “It was a great opportunity to showcase the natural brands that make up our UK portfolio. To talk directly to and listen to the wide variety of businesses that make up our industry under one roof made for a great two days of interaction.”

Benebone exhibited in the New Starter Zone, and the company’s international and marketing manager Victoria Lowe said: “We had a great time at PATS Telford – it was our first time exhibiting and it didn’t disappoint. We were really pleased with the level of interest in our brand.”

Visitors were attracted in their droves to the WHM Pet Group stand, which took on a Wild West theme to signify the launch of new wild bird products. Brand manager Emily Scruton commented: “We like to have a bit of fun at the show and people keep returning to our stand every year just to see what the theme is. We love being part of this event and it was great to see the addition of an extra hall and the New Starter Zone.”

Mealberry travelled from Germany to exhibit, and sales and marketing manager Doreen Werner agreed it had been a worthwhile trip. “This year’s Telford event was great! The show had a lovely atmosphere and visitors were super excited about new products. We were overwhelmed by the positive feedback and reactions to our new RIO-for-birds launch.”

And Charlie Williams, commercial director of Canagan Group, agreed it was “a fantastic show, meeting many existing and new customers.”

PATS Telford also got the thumbs up from visitors.

Emma Smith, director of The Ark Pet Centres in Devon, crowned UK Pet Retailer of the Year at the PetQuip Awards, said: “We thought PATS Telford was great this year. Lots of exhibitors, lots of new products and everyone was genuinely happy to see you on their stands and really wanted to do business with you.”

Rosemary Roberts, of Petals & Pets in the West Midlands, commented: “Two of us attended the show and it took us the full two days to get around all three halls. We found a lot of good contacts and a fantastic range of products.”

The final word was left to pet retail consultant Claire Gavin, a former director of Pets at Home. “It was great to see the thriving UK pet industry come together at PATS Telford and fantastic that so many innovative ideas focused on the health, wellbeing, bonding and enrichment benefits for the pets themselves. I’m already looking forward to PATS Sandown in March next year.”

Ivyline makes itself at home with new headquarters

Ivyline, one of the sector’s leading garden, home and giftware suppliers, has recently undertaken a move to a new facility at the heart of Stoneleigh Park – a move designed to support the brand’s ongoing growth...

Ivyline, one of the sector’s leading garden, home and giftware suppliers, has recently undertaken a move to a new facility at the heart of Stoneleigh Park – a move designed to support the brand’s ongoing growth.

Moving from its old location in Coventry, Ivyline’s new headquarters has become home to the complete in-house team, which has seen its numbers double in the last year due to growing demand for Ivyline products. From sales and marketing to design, sourcing, and order management, the full team is now working under one roof, with the benefit of an onsite trade showroom to support product development and customer relations year-round.

Scott Thomas, Ivyline Managing Director, said of the new headquarters: “After a period of significant growth we came to realise that we were about to outgrow our old premises, so a move was vital to ensure that we could continue to service all our customers, both old and new.

“Stoneleigh Park is a superb location. Not only does it bring key events and exhibitions to our doorstep but, more importantly, the central location allows easy access for our customers that wish to get up-close and personal with our complete offering. Providing year-round access and support during the exhibition cycle, our showroom is an invaluable resource, and one we know our customers will appreciate, as we look to expand Ivyline’s reach even further.”

Since moving to Stoneleigh Park, Ivyline has expanded its offering into furniture, introduced new Christmas ranges, and, most recently, lifestyle gardening collections, whilst creating even more bestselling outdoor living ranges. The expansion of the in-house design team has also enabled Ivyline to create more design cohesion across multiple collections, whilst the team - alongside Ivyline’s dedicated sourcing team - has been better placed to find new supply partners that uphold the same sustainable values across material management and manufacturing processes.

Dreaming of a Red Christmas! Cultivate Festive Style with Poinsettias

Stars for Europe has put together an image library for the 2022 festive season, which has left us dreaming of a bold red Christmas as the rainy days of Autumn set in...

Red is the most classic Christmas colour, partly thanks to the universally loved poinsettia – also known as the Christmas Star flower – whose traditional red foliage has been used to enhance homes during the festive season for centuries.

Whilst careful cultivation from Europe’s leading poinsettia growers has resulted in countless floral varieties in a glorious array of colours – from white, cream and yellow through to amber, orange and eye-popping pinks – red is still the most popular colour of this favoured Christmas flower.

Stars for Europe has put together an image library for the 2022 festive season, which has left us dreaming of a bold red Christmas as the rainy days of Autumn set in.

Festive Inspiration

Spruce and fir cones, echeveria, rosehips, pine twigs and cut poinsettias decorate this lush Advent wreath in an on-trend nature-inspired style. Tip: Immediately after cutting, dip the poinsettia stems briefly in hot water (approx. 60°C) and then in cold water. Place them in water-filled test tubes then insert them into the wreath. This keeps the star-shaped bracts beautifully fresh for up to two weeks.

For pretty gifts to go, drinking jars with lids and integrated straws are ideal for use as leakproof mini vases. Fill with water, replace the straws with cut poinsettias and tie pine sprigs to the lids with string.

Red poinsettias add bold accents to these black kitchen units. Together with the candles and the deer figurine, they signal the arrival of Christmas. A zigzag bush (Muehlenbeckia Astonii), echeveria, pepperomia, oyster plant (Tradescantia spathacea) and arrowhead plant (Syngonium podophyllum) further enhance the cosy atmosphere.

As floating plants in wine glasses, mini poinsettias are a stylish table decoration that's quick to make. Take the plants out of their pots, then carefully wash the root balls until the fine root system is exposed. Finally, arrange the poinsettias in glasses filled with water.

These decorations might last the entire festive period, as many plants grow well in hydroponics (plant roots kept in water), but this method does leave your poinsettias prone to risks such as rotting roots and stems. So it’s best to see this as a short-term decoration idea; like an alternative to cut flowers.

Alternative Colour

For those in search of a softer, lighter look this Christmas, you can also choose from beautiful floral images in a broad array of colourways and different trend themes, from Fairytale tablescapes and Trees to Urban Jungles or Mid-Century Style.

We can also supply step-by-step craft guides detailing how to create beautiful floral wreaths, centrepieces, hanging decorations, giftwrap ideas and endless inspiration for the Christmas table.

All the featured images can be downloaded in high resolution from the Stars for Europe library and I've also added a selection here on Wetransfer for your convenience. Any images used should be credited to Stars for Europe and our resident expert is Dr Susanne Lux if you need someone to quote.

The Social Chain Group AG, the leading global social commerce company that owns LANDMANN BBQs, has announced a new structure in the UK and a stream of new hires to bolster their brands including LANDMANN - Germany's oldest BBQ manufacturer.

LANDMANN offers various smokers, high-temperature gas grill BBQs, ceramic grills and electric BBQs.  It also manufactures other outdoor living products and accessories such as firepits and outdoor heaters.

The Social Chain Group AG, co-founded by Dragons’ Den star Steven Bartlett, recently merged with the DS Group, the German parent company of LANDMANN Limited in a €220m deal.

Today it has announced a new structure in the UK - positioning Social Chain UK as a ‘House of Brands’.  There are now two strong divisions to support their brands’ growth and internationalisation in both the UK and the US

  • The Agency side with Social Chain Agency and Mint, a Performance Marketing powerhouse

The restructure is all part of Social Chain UK’s bold ambitions to reshape the world of brands and commerce with social commerce - online shops and social communities to drive sales, inspire customers and amplify brands.

It’s an extremely competitive market but LANDMANN is the biggest focus for us, and with the strong NPD pipeline, important new hires, and social commerce expertise of Social Chain Agency and Mint Performance Marketing we’re confident LANDMANN is on its way to becoming a leader in the sector.”

David Flook, who joins from High Street TV said: “There couldn't be a more exciting time for me to join the business.  This season, sales have been extremely strong proving the acquisition of the business by The Social Chain AG, and innovations like the Fryton, the first ever BBQ with a built-in airfryer, are propelling the LANDMANN brand forward. I have ambitions to drive it even more.”

Alan Clarke, Supply Chain & Operations Director “Operationally, our focus is to continue our exceptional customer experience and to provide an unparalleled delivery service. Perennial urges people in horticulture with aches and pains to seek physio treatment

In line with its ongoing commitment to raising awareness of good health and wellbeing in the industry, Perennial the charity for people in horticulture, has referred 70 people for physiotherapy since launching its free service last year.

The service, delivered in partnership with Connect Health, aims to prevent peoples’ short-term treatable injuries from developing into long-term life-debilitating issues that may have a detrimental impact on their overall wellbeing.

Of the 70 referrals, 49% were for back/shoulder/neck pain, 33% for knee/hip/leg pain and 18% for arms/wrist/elbow pain. Almost 70% of users were over 35 years old, highlighting that while the chance of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) increases with age, younger people are still at risk.

1 in 4 people experience MSDs such as a sprain, strain or tear, back pain, arthritis or tendonitis*. While Perennial estimates 75,000 people in horticulture have or will experience this, the charity stresses that MSDs are not inevitable and can be prevented. Identifying and treating the signs and symptoms early can help to resolve a disorder and reduce its impact.

Perennial’s Health & Wellbeing Survey 2021*** reported back and joint pain to be the biggest issue surrounding the health of people in horticulture with 78% of people experiencing aches and pains in the 6 weeks prior to completing the survey.

Julia Hayne says: “MSDs in our industry don’t have to be the norm. If people get help early enough, they can improve their physical wellbeing and avoid their condition getting worse and negatively impacting their future. So often we hear about a niggly pain that’s become unmanageable leaving people no longer fit for the job and ultimately unable to cover the bills. Treatment sooner rather than later really works as a preventative measure.”

Grounds maintenance worker Craig, 31, says: “I’m so grateful for the physio sessions for my back pain, they’ve really helped me. I can do normal things again like going for a walk and driving again, but I’m still not back at work. It was shocking to read my report and realise how bad a state my back was in. I’ve been daft in the past and lifted equipment on my own when I shouldn’t have. I should have looked after myself and got treatment sooner.”

Craig was 31 when he put his back out. He’d worked in grounds maintenance for 10 years and had suffered from a bad back for as long as he could remember. Eventually, the years caught up with him when his back went during a shift at work.

Anyone in the sector experiencing symptoms of MSDs such as recurrent pain, swelling, stiff joints and dull aches in for example their neck, shoulder, knees, back or feet can call the Perennial helpline on 0800 093 8543 for a referral.

“‘Digital’ is a life attitude”

Horticulture’s future in a digital world was the topic of discussion at the second AIPH World Ornamental Horticulture Summit, held at Expo Floriade 2022 in Almere, the Netherlands...

Horticulture’s future in a digital world was the topic of discussion at the second AIPH World Ornamental Horticulture Summit, held at Expo Floriade 2022 in Almere, the Netherlands.

“‘Digital’ is a life attitude,” said keynote speaker Domingo Iudice. “You have to adapt quickly and surf all the opportunities available. It’s painful, but it works.”

Domingo founded digital marketing agency Brainpull, based in Italy, in 2012. Today, the company has 80 members of staff in Puglia, Milan and the US. In his presentation, he used examples from his own career to illustrate the immense benefit of using digital tools to reach potential customers.

“Digital squares change rapidly, but they always offer great opportunities. They are the largest meeting places in the world and influence customer purchases. Digital tools allow businesses to gain feedback, control processes and connect with people.”

Domingo highlighted that with the standard B2B2C structure, producers have no relationship with their end consumer. Using digital tools, producers can establish a relationship with the consumer, gain feedback, and make better decisions for the future.

Attendees also heard from Justin Hancock, Senior Brand Marketing Manager for Costa Farms. He explained how and why Costa Farms is utilising digital tools. “The current consumer might not be using digital, but tomorrow’s consumer is,” he said. “We have to get in front of them.”

“More and more consumers are spending more and more time on social media. You don’t want to make consumers come to you, you need to get to where they are. Social media also lets you build a relationship with your consumers.”

Justin also highlighted the value of collecting data from online sources. This may be from direct feedback by a consumer, but there is an equally valuable source of data that can be taken from social media. Digital platforms allow producers to find what is trending and how people are engaging with products, giving companies insight into their customers’ needs.

According to a 2022 Shopify report, 61% of consumers trust influencer recommendations. One such influencer is Darryl Cheng, creator of the House Plant Journal and author of ‘The New Plant Parent’. Darryl presented a different perspective on communicating with consumers via social media. He explained his own approach of creating interesting and engaging content. By providing impactful tips and tricks, he enables his followers to have greater success with their houseplants, hence building a positive relationship with the producer who supplied the plant. Darryl therefore provides a valuable connection between the producer and the consumer.

Attendees also heard from Michael Perry, better known as Mr Plant Geek. With a background as a Product Developer for Thompson Morgan in the UK before switching to his garden personality career, Michael has a unique view of the industry from both the inside and outside. He offered insight into the ever growing list of social media platforms and how each of them are used in their unique ways. He commented that not every platform is suitable for every business, saying: “Choose the platform that is right for you, and don’t do it because you feel forced to.”

Commenting on the summit, AIPH Secretary General, Tim Briercliffe said “This summit brought together businesses and organisations from across the globe so that together we can prepare for a changing digital world. It was clear that the opportunities are huge and there are great examples of companies taking them but there is also the danger of being left behind and it was so valuable to get an insight into how we will need to relate to the consumer of the future.”

Other speakers were:

  • Dr. Tosca Ferber, Research Director at Dümmen Orange, the Netherlands
  • Valerio Perego, Head of Sales at Meta, Italy
  • Steven van Schilfgaarde, CEO of Royal FloraHolland, the Netherlands
  • Jan van Dam, CEO of Dutch Flower Group, the Netherlands
  • Abe van Wingerden, Co-CEO of Metrolina Greenhouses, USA
  • Pablo Bazzani, Sales and Marketing Director, Plazoleta Flowers, Colombia, and winner of the Young International Grower of the Year 2022
  • Marco van der Sar, Chairman of the Flower Council, the Netherlands
  • Phil Paxton, President of Wheatland Trees Ltd, Canada
  • Sirekit Mol, Head Of Commercial Operations for Beekenkamp Plants BV, the Netherlands

For those unable to attend AIPH will be making many of the sessions available from its website.

Thank you to Headline Sponsor Pera Event, Gold Sponsor Royal FloraHolland, Bronze Sponsors Dutch Flower Group and GreenTech, and Event Partners CIOPORA, the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC), the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative, Union Fleurs and Florint for their support of this event.

Tributes to Brian Knight who died last month

The Knight family of Knights Garden Centres at Godstone and Betchworth have been paying tribute to Brian Knight who died in September...

The Knight family of Knights Garden Centres at Godstone and Betchworth have been paying tribute to Brian Knight who died in September.

"Goodbye Brian. Dad, Grandad, Mr. Knight, Skip. A gardening life now ended, digging, sowing, and watering is done. A love of God’s creation, passed to many generations, a precious gift that lives on. Rough hands that cultivated natures beauty, held us safe with a loving touch. Grateful hearts poured out for a loving father, and a life that has provided so much.

"Dad lived and grew up in Tandridge and after leaving school set to work helping his father start market garden production supplying the local community and from humble beginnings a business has grown. Dad had a simple faith, never took anything or anyone for granted and considered it a blessing to be tending plants. He loved his family dearly, but it was a love that was given freely and every member of staff, every customer and anyone he knew was special to him.

"Dad – wash off you boots, hang your coat, and take off your gloves one last time. Your work is done – Gardens will continue to flourish as Your legacy lives on."

Like so many in the very early days of the garden centre industry Brian saw an opportunity in market garden production. He became a member of the HTA and from there became involved with the newly formed GCA. He loved attending the GCA South Thames meetings, conferences and International GCA Congress’s. As well as the great amount of banter back in those days, he would actively partake in the giving and receiving of advice, support and general sharing of information that really became the cornerstone of our industries success.

He made so many friends within the industry that he loved, and many of you will have some special memories.

Brian Knight 14/12/28 – 17/9/22

Garden centre sales down 7% in August says HTA

Overall, garden centre sales in August 2022 were down -7% on August 2021 as consumers faced another month of high inflation, price increases on energy and drought restrictions, according to the HTA's market update.

Within this figure, garden/gardening sales were down -6% on August 2021 and non- garden/gardening sales were down -11% as consumers were likely adapting their leisure budgets from the rising costs of essentials.

In addition, the August bank holiday may not have driven footfall as consumers had multiple leisure options available to them. Our analysis of transaction numbers shows that overall garden centre transactions were 12% down on August 2021.

Overall sales in comparison to July 2019 were up +23% on a more ‘normal’ trading period comparison. Garden/gardening sales were up +24% and non-garden/gardening sales were up +19% within this compared to July 2019.

However, these increased sales are likely reflecting the price increases seen within the 3-year period instead of demand. Consumer financial confidence dropping each month is likely impacting consumers’ willingness to spend on leisure.
