Durston’s Chris Durston marks 60 years in business with daring wing walk

To mark an incredible 60 years at the helm of Durston Garden Products, Managing Director Chris Durston celebrated in style – strapped to the top wing of a biplane!

On Friday 30th May, Chris took to the skies at Henstridge Airfield, Templecombe, Somerset for a thrilling wing walk, proving that even in his late 70s, he remains full of energy and passion for life, business, and adventure.

This daring feat marked six decades of dedication to the family-run business, which has grown from a small Somerset farm into one of the UK’s most respected suppliers of growing media. From milking cows to pioneering peat-free compost innovation, Chris’s career has been defined by vision, hard work and a dash of daring – so it came as no surprise that he celebrated with his feet off the ground!

While Chris enjoyed the adrenaline rush, his charitable spirit remained firmly grounded. In honour of the occasion, he generously donated £250 to the Greenfingers Charity, which creates magical gardens for children in hospices across the UK.

Reflecting on the milestone, Chris said: "Sixty years at Durstons has flown by, so what better way to celebrate than flying through the air myself! It’s been a privilege to grow the business with my family and colleagues, and I’m pleased this celebration could also help support the brilliant work of Greenfingers."

Linda Petrons, Director of Fundraising and Communications at the Greenfingers Charity, added: "We’re so grateful to Chris for thinking of Greenfingers at such a special moment in his life. His generosity will help us continue creating much-needed, life-enhancing gardens for life-limited children and their families. Congratulations to Chris on 60 remarkable years, what a way to celebrate!"
