Tying in with National Tree Week (26 November - 4 December), Lampton Services is getting tree planting season underway in Hounslow for Winter 22/23.
The winter months offer the right conditions for an extensive planting period and Lampton is supporting Hounslow Council’s commitment to plant 7,500 trees this year with 9,000 whips and 250 standard trees to be planted across over 30 parks throughout the borough.
When planning for the tree planting season, the expert team at Lampton Services considers which species suit the local area, taking into account factors such as how much water they need and their ecology. Lampton also plants trees with longevity in mind. As the climate changes, the team is selecting appropriate trees that will be able to thrive. The trees being planted this Winter are from a diverse range of species, including Hornbeam, Beech, Hawthorn, Yew and Laurel.
Of the 9,000 whips being planted, many of the new whips will be planted in mini forests in locations including Sutton Playing Fields and Bedfont Lakes Country Park. In a new approach this year, whips will be planted using a weed membrane to suppress grass and weeds, reducing competition for water and allowing watering teams to work more efficiently. To maintain the trees, dedicated teams will water them throughout the summer and, in the event of another heatwave, additional teams will be diverted as necessary.
Lampton Services is also supporting the local community by collaborating with the council on its ‘Free Trees for Hounslow’ giveaway. The scheme sees 1,000 free fruit trees given away to residents, schools and allotment holders in Hounslow for them to plant to get involved with creating a greener borough.
In addition, Lampton is supporting Hounslow Council as it launches its new ‘Grow for the Future’ project, which will see unused land in the borough converted into new allotments, orchards and community gardens. Food grown on the transformed land can be donated to children as the cost of living remains high, and the project will also educate children on healthy living.
Sam Leigh, Managing Director, Lampton Community Services, says, “We are delighted to announce all the positive work we are championing to create a greener borough for the benefit of the whole community. Our expert tree planting programme and the support we’re providing to the ‘Free Trees for Hounslow’ scheme are helping the council to meet its goal of planting 7,500 trees this year. We’re excited to continue our vital work in local green spaces by playing a key role in the new ‘Grow for the Future’ project.”
