Promising year-end sales figures predicted by the GTN All Products Index
The GTN All Products Index is predicting that volume sales in garden centres at the year end will be 0.6% up on last year.  An amazing possibility considering the poor weather during the spring and summer months...

Chart

Chart

With autumn gardening sales so buoyant and reports of brisk sales from early opening Christmas displays, the GTN All Products Index now predicts a year end volume up 0.6% on last year assuming we don’t have periods of prolonged bad weather in the run up to Christmas.

More good news came from the fact that sales of bestselling gardening products this month are running at 30% up on last year and 9% up on September 2010.

And those increases in core gardening activity related sales are contributing to an overall sales volume position that we now predict will reach the year end slightly up on 2011.

Ian Wylie steps into GCA top seat
E-learning and Conference are top priorities
Iain-Wylie

Former Grosvenor Garden Centre MD and GCA Executive member Iain Wylie has been appointed Interim Chief Executive of the GCA, following the departure of Phil Slinger.

Iain took on the new role following a GCA Board meeting this week and will lead the GCA through to conference in January 2013, helping the board find a new permanent CEO along the way.

“There are so many positive things going on at the GCA, I’m really pleased to be the person helping them come to fruition and take the organisation forward.”

Iain told GTN Xtra last night that as well as preparing for conference the Grow e-learning initiative would be a major area of focus for him. “Over 60 member garden centres have already signed up for Grow and the first modules will be going live very soon.”

“I’m genuinely impressed by the amount of work that has been completed on the Grow project since it was launched at the 2012 conference by Tammy Woodhouse and Mike Burks.  Grow will be a huge help to member garden centres.  They will get great value from their investment.”

GCA Chairman Peter Burks also underlined the significance of the GCA e-learning initiative.  “E-learning is becoming so popular when we have new recruits at The Garden Centre Group many of them complete their initial learning modules before they arrive for their first day.”

The GCA’s appointment of an existing executive board member to run their trade association follows in the footsteps of the HTA who have just appointed Carol Paris as Director General, moving from the Presidents role.  “We’re not copying the HTA,” commented Peter Burks, “just doing the sensible thing to keep the steady growth in membership of the past 2 years and increased value to members moving in the right direction.”

Peter Burks has been talking with Carol Paris over the past 12 months about many issues to get the industry working together including the possibility of the GCA office moving back to the HTA headquarters in Theale.

With 3 key trade associations all now being run by people who have many years of gardening retail knowledge at their fingertips – Carol Paris at the HTA, Neil Gow at GIMA and Iain Wylie at GCA - this may be the best opportunity for co-operation across the industry to help grow the gardening market we’ve ever had.

In the meantime Iain Wylie will be spending a mix of time at the GCA office in Leafield whilst getting out and about to spend time with members during the launch of Grow.

Opening up for Christmas trading
Home-Sweet-Home

Staff at Notcutts Wheatcroft worked through the night to get their Christmas displays open for trading...

Home-Sweet-Home

Christmas opened for trading last week at Notcutts Wheatcroft. Manager Steve Cole told GTN Bestsellers his team, including catering staff, had worked extra shifts until midnight for many days to complete their main displays in time for opening to trade during week ending September 23rd.

“We’ve had customers phoning us for weeks asking when Christmas would be open so although there are still some product lines to come in we’re now open for Christmas business and initial sales have been excellent,” said Steve, pictured below.

Wheatcroft has over 10,000 Sage club members who will be invited to a special Christmas Event in October.  Christmas hampers are also selling well from their expanded Gourmet food department.

With more garden centres opening their Christmas displays this weekend and customers welcoming the early opportunity to browse and buy we could be in for a bumper October.

Garden Products
Autumn lawn care lights up the sales chart
Autumn lawn care products are selling like never before at this time of year with 10 of the Top 50 GTN Bestsellers Garden Products being lawn care lines...

Autumn lawn care products are selling like never before at this time of year. Ten of the Top 50 GTN Bestsellers Garden Products are lawn care items and Scotts Autumn Lawnbuilder for 100 sq metres is at No 2, only outsold by Orchid Drip feeders.

Other bestselling lawn care items are Scotts Evergreen Autumn, Westland Sure Start Lawn repair kit and Arthur Bowers Lawn Dressing.

Fito Orchid Drip Feeders stay at No 1 for the eighth week running and with considerable year on year sales increases. For the first three weeks in September the volume of Orchid Drip Feeders in the GTN Bestsellers epos data is up 38% on last year.

The repeated use of these feeders is now well and truly appreciated by our garden centre orchid customers and new users must be adopting them too.  Can we achieve the same with Poinsettia Drip Feeders in December?  Will the Baby Bio Drip feeder come back into the charts?

Preparations for winter are also prompting good volume sales.  Gardman Frostgard sales grew by 88% to move back into the top 10 and the only new entry this week is a winter Tap Cover from Gardman.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to attend the HTA Garden Futures Conference on 10 October at One Great George Street, London. With the dinner event on 9 October already  sold out there are only limited places left for the conference itself.

HTA Garden Futures is the leading annual strategic industry event which will again introduce a powerful line up of expert speakers including:

Dr Brian Clark, Senior Economist at Barclays who will provide an overview of the current  economic climate and share his views on where it’s going and how this will impact businesses and consumers in the years ahead.

Paul Loft, Managing Director of Homebase who has a foot in both garden retail and the broader  world of retailing will give his perspective on how the industry can adapt and how Homebase is seeking to encourage more people to start gardening.

New Economics Foundation’s Andrew Simms who will propose a future for a successful independent retail sector.

Marshall Dirks from Proven Winners USA will outline great new ideas for getting people to buy and grow plants.

Paul Hogden of IT Genetics and Mark Pitman from Hillier Garden Centres will discuss their views on how garden centres can use social media successfully and how to maximise gain from it.

Speakers from Visa and Barclaycard will define the changes that retailers will see in payment technology, the growth in contactless payment and how this will affect the industry.

Future Foundation’s Jason Mander will provide insight of the drivers and trends which may affect retail over the next five years and the implications for the sector.

Industry leaders including Mark Pearson of Gardman, Andy McIndoe of Hillier Nurseries and James Barnes of Dobbies will explore how we can grow again and move forwards in The Big Debate.

HTA Director of Business Development, Tim Briercliffe, comments: “With a great mix of garden retailers, growers, manufacturers and guests HTA Garden Futures provides not  only a great line up of speakers and topics but an invaluable networking opportunity for the industry.

"After the season that we have had the conference theme which focuses on the need to survive, adapt, and grow is particularly apt and there are sure to be  invaluable insights to be gained by attending – helping businesses to prepare for the year ahead.”

Headline sponsors are Hozelock and The Scotts Miracle Gro Company.

Glee 2012 was the 37th – and I have attended about 30 of them, the last 21 as editor of GTN.

As I am barely more than two years from the start of my eighth decade (go on...work it out), I think now is a good time to hand on the baton (although I will continue to write for the title).

GTN has had only two editors since its launch in 1978, so we are now looking for its third.

You will need plenty of energy, shedloads of passion for this fascinating industry of ours, and an appetite for change.  It will be fun. I’ll guarantee it!  Could it be you?

Multipurpose compost lines saw big sales increases last week as autumn planting continued at a good rate in advance of the wet spell we’ve just had.

Top 50 volume sales are 4% up on the same week last year and 25% up on the same week in 2010 so we can safely say that core planting activity hasn’t been deterred by the poor spring/summer.  Hooray for the autumn planting season!

Good performing products include: Arthur Bowers Multipurpose, 60 litres moves up 14 places this week; Shamrock Multipurpose 75 litres is the highest climber, up 20 places; and Westland Multipurpose 50 litres continues to lead the way.

Manure sales also increased last week with more veg plot preparation the order of the day. Scotts Levington Organic Choice Manure increased sales by 61% to move up 11 places while Arthur Bowers Farm manure held onto it’s top 3 position.

Watch out for battle with the Dragons this Sunday
BBC2's Dragons like the gardening product they see in Sundays show but are in for a surprise when it comes to making investment offers...

Northampton based company GreanBase will feature on BBC 2’s Dragons Den this Sunday 30th September in what will prove to be a memorable episode in the long running TV series. Father / son duo of Mike and Joe Smith pitch their simple gardening tool “The Wheelbarrow Booster” and receive positive reviews from all 5 Dragons but unfortunately give a rude awakening when it came to making their offers of investment.

“Without wanting to give too much away I don’t think the Dragons have been challenged in the Den like this before” commented Director Joe Smith “we were flattered there was interest in the product but we all know that the Dragons take the micky sometimes when they ask for percentages of a business, the problem is that too many people are a little bit too intimidated to argue back. Fortunately Mike has never really watched the show before and instead of keeping to pleasant protocol of the Den he lets them know what he thinks straight away.” The BBC’s website quotes that we “cause consternation amongst the multimillionaire investors with their no nonsense negotiating style” which is pretty accurate in my opinion.

Mike and Joe went into the Den seeking investment to expand their business for a garden tool that can be used worldwide hoping to land a Dragons that would give extra impetus when approaching multinational retailers and were proud to receive positive comments on the product but weren’t prepared to buckle under the pressure of 5  TV personalities. GreanBase are the final and main feature of episode 4 but ironically Mike will not be watching it “I went on for the product to get famous, not for me to get famous” commented the tempestuous landscape Gardener from Yorkshire.

This time last year 150 gram packs of Rootgrow appeared in the GTN Bestsellers chart for the first time and remained a Top 50 Bestseller for the rest of the autumn planting season.

GTN Xtra is really surprised it’s not back in the charts yet this year. You should be able to sell a pack of Rootgrow with nearly every plant sold for autumn planting!  Your customers will thank you for it.

£2m garden centre plan will create 40 new jobs
Work has started on a £2 million garden centre and holiday park which is set to create 40 jobs...

Work has started on a £2 million garden centre and holiday park which is set to create 40 jobs.

Developers have beaten the weather to make a positive start to groundworks and buildings on the site of the former Cherry Tree Farm at Glentworth.

The nine-acre site has been derelict since the farm shop closed two years ago. It is now owned by West Lindsey farmer David Nelstrop, who is based at Lissington near Market Rasen.

He has already invested heavily in the project which will be known as The Willows.

Phase one, due for completion after Christmas, will see a four-and-a-half acre garden centre and cafe, with five retail units, employing eight full-time and up to 32 part-time staff.

The second phase of 17 static caravans, ten log cabins and a fishing lake on a holiday park at the rear of the centre will also create jobs and be open by the summer of 2015.

"The objectives are to create a high quality retail and tourist attraction for both local residents and visitors to Lincolnshire and to tidy up a local eyesore to create something that the villagers can be proud of," Mr Nelstrop said.

General manager James Carter, 28, has previously worked at Crowder's Garden Centre in Horncastle and Dobbies.

Onion Sets Electric sparked highest sales in the GTN Bestsellers Veg 2 Gro chart this week with the Taylors Bulbs packs moving up to No 1 as they were this time last year and the Unwins packs coming in as a new entry at No 25.

Overall Veg 2 Gro autumn sales are on a par with last year as an indicator that the not so good summer doesn’t appear to have put people off growing their own veg at home or in allotments.

Broad Bean Aquadulce continues to be the most prolific seed pack of choice.  T&M packs are at No 7, Sutton’s packs move up 5 to No 8 and Mr Fothergill’s packs are a new entry at No 45.

Taylors Bulbs have four Veg 2 Gro chart re-entries this week: Rhubarb Champagne is the highest re-entry at No 19; Chilli Starter Kit comes back in at No 34; Asparagus Connovers Colossal is one place behind at No 35; Small Mushroom Kits are new in at No 50.

Landscaping firm hit by burglars four times in five nights
Equipment worth thousands of pounds was stolen from an East Midlands landscaping business over a five-night period.

Equipment worth thousands of pounds was stolen from a landscaping business over a five-night period.

David Penny is appealing for information after his design and landscaping business was broken into on four separate occasions. The business is based at the former Greetham Garden Centre near Stamford.

Stolen items belonging to Mr Penny, including lawnmowers, pressure washers, drills and a 6ft high fibreglass statue of a Grecian woman were taken during the break-ins.

Wood used to build raised beds was also taken, as well as scaffolding, and it is believed a large vehicle was used.

Mr Penny is now appealing for anyone who is offered any items they believe to be suspicious to get in touch with the police as soon as possible.

Thieves cut sections of the surrounding fencing and broke padlocks to get into the site and on each of the occasions, Mr Penny repaired the damage only for it to happen again.

Police have also stepped up patrols in the area and are monitoring the site.
