A competition in Garden Trade News to win a pallet of Resolva is proving to be a big hit with garden centre staff who are getting themselves photographed wearing Dandy facemasks.

The Resolva Dandy facemasks were given away free in the latest issue of GTN, and to stand a chance of winning the main prize readers have to tweet pictures of themselves with the masks.

Famous for his quirky TV advert appearances, the Resolver character Dandy is the country's favourite cheeky little weed that is taking the nation by storm.

The person or centre to submit the most fun and inventive picture that brings the character's personality to life will win the prize.

If you have your Resolva Dandy mask and would like some inspiration, staff at Garden Trade News had their pictures taken with their facemasks at their local Van Hage Peterborough store.

And if you need any more inspiration visit www.resolva-weeds.com to view Resolva's award-winning TV campaign featuring Dandy.

If you would like a copy of Garden Trade News, March 2013 issue, with the Resolva Dandy facemask email pat.flynn@tgcmc.co.uk

And to enter the competition, simply tweet your pictures to @Dandy_Weed and use the hashtag #ellomate before 1st May 2013. Don't forget to include your name, email address, telephone number, and the name of the garden centre you work for in your tweet. The usual terms and conditions apply. Competition open to all employees of UK-based garden centres.

Over 500 visitors to the Europlants Spring Open Days were dazzled by a fantastic array of stunning plants on display.

They were welcomed with a smile at reception by staff decked in the colour of the day – royal purple.

The first big display to be seen were examples of bestselling lines arranged on large silver, circular plinths allowing buyers to walk through the plants and gain inspiration from them.

Visitors were then wowed by a collection of multi-coloured recycled metal, cartoon farm animals, complete with flying pigs and bull beer coolers!

There were 130 trolley deals for buyers to view, including an amazing selection of plants for garden centres from Europlants’ Europe wide suppliers;  Aucuba Croton Gold and flame red Nandina from Vannucci: and glossy foliage and buds of large Ceanothus from the UK.

Visitors enjoyed a superb Italian buffet in a ‘dining room for the day’ decked with silver and purple ballons and livery. Those who had bought their raffle  tickets on behalf of the Greenfingers appeal helped raise over £2,000. This figure was boosted by an auction hosted by Garden TV personality David Domoney. The prizes on offer were a meal at the beautiful Grove Hotel, a 4ft Italian chocolate egg and a purple ‘wheelbarrow of booze’.

Out on the nursery customers saw the stunning new tree area that was redeveloped during the winter. To encourage visitors to see all the site, strategically placed ’Hot Spot’ deals offered certain products at very special prices.

Vitax helps to deliver a lasting future for The National Forest
Leicestershire-based Vitax has dug deep to help the environment by planting over 450 trees which will contribute towards creating three hectares of new woodland in The National Forest.

Leicestershire-based Vitax has dug deep to help the environment by planting over 450 trees which will contribute towards creating three hectares of new woodland in The National Forest.

Vitax invited staff, suppliers and customers to pick up their spades to transform an area in Normanton Le Heath.

Around 40 people attended the event which forms part of Vitax’s three-year sponsorship agreement with the National Forest Company to help plant around 6,000 trees, including oak, silver-birch, hornbeam and wild cherry.

Paul Gooding, chairman at Vitax, says: “The event was a great chance for us to celebrate our commitment to the sponsorship.  It is important for us to show our support towards the work of The National Forest and through planting trees we can not only promote the charity to our customers but it also boosts team morale.

“We are pleased to be playing our part in restoring the woodland in the UK and I’m sure there will be a few aching limbs tomorrow”.

Covering 200 square miles in the heart of England, The National Forest is maturing as the boldest environmentally-led regeneration project undertaken in the UK.

TV star Alex Polizzi fixes it for Oak Garden Centre

Oak Garden Centre in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, is the subject of BBC2's 'The Fixer' programme in which successful businesswomen Alex Polizzi rejuvenates the company. It's being screened at 8pm on Tuesday (March 19).

According to the BBC's preview Oak Garden Centre "withered under the battering of last year's freezing winter and the poor financial management of dad David." It was forced into liquidation, leaving David and his wife Lynn distraught and in tears.

Son Ross stepped into relaunch the business but with no money to play with he only kept it afloat by maxing out his credit card.

The BBC said that David found it impossible to let his son take the reins and their relationship was on the verge of total breakdown.

Into the breach stepped Alex Polizzi. During the programme she takes them to a stunning and successful National Trust property to understand how to turn themselves into a destination and calls in a leading retail expert to transform the site.

Alex was helped by visual merchandising expert Karl McKeever. Karl, who owns the retail consultancy Visual Thinking, which consults for the likes of M&S, John Lewis and Sainsbury’s, says of the series: “Several of the businesses that took part in The Fixer last year recorded extensive profit and turnover increases, increased average transaction values and also saw other tangible benefits.

“This completely dispels the perception that reality TV business makeovers are simply two-dimensional displays for the benefit of television and that once the cameras go, things go back to bad for the retailers.”

Thompson & Morgan offer 'money-back' guarantee
Thompson & Morgan believe they have created the sweetest ever tomato and are backing up their claim with a 'money-back' guarantee to consumers...
Thompson & Morgan believe they have created the sweetest ever tomato and are backing up their claim with a 'money-back' guarantee to consumers.

"I’m so confident you won’t be disappointed, that I’ll give you your money back if you don’t think this is the best tomato you’ve ever tasted," Paul Hansord, managing director of Thompson & Morgan, is telling customers.

The sweet-tasting tomato in question is Sweet Aperitif.

"It’s 20 years since I discovered the now hugely popular orange-skinned tomato variety, Sungold, which at the time took tomato flavour to a new level," said Paul.

"Since then I’ve tried 100s of new tomato varieties and none have beaten Sungold on taste. That is, until I tasted Sweet Aperitif. It has a wonderfully sweet flavour and a remarkably thin skin. Everyone should try it - I’m convinced it’s going to be the next best-selling red-skinned tomato."

Sweet Aperitif has already topped taste tests – a fact which usually pre-empts a variety becoming the one that everyone wants to grow at home.

Gardeners and allotmenteers can grow Sweet Aperitif indoors or outside. When grown in a greenhouse, growers can expect to harvest 50-plus bite-sized and flavourful tomatoes over a six-month cropping period. Outdoor yields are also expected to be higher than normal.

Visitors to the 17th annual Classiflora Trade Show were impressed by the quality of the 1,700 new plant lines in hardy exterior plants, tree and shrubs and doubly impressed by celebrity gardener Monty Don.

Many queued to have their photo taken with him and he proved to be an affable host.

Lots of show offers were available for visitors to take advantage of and when they needed a sit down after walking round the nursery, the Tuscan buffet kept them fed and watered.

The aromatic herbs tray (above) particularly caught our editorial team’s eye.  Imported from Albenga in Italy they are presented in attractive, 100% bio-degradable packaging.  A good quality selection which is bound to attract a shopper’s eye.

Two 40ft articulated trucks deliver stock to the Waltham Abbey site every day during the high season so customers can be assured of ready availability when ordering plants.

Retail customers will also benefit from new ‘pick and mix’ shelf and trolley deals that will allow them to build their own bespoke selections from a greater variety of lines.  This reduces the risk of unsold stock and maximises return.

Garden centres busy despite snow and cold

As the country wrapped up against the snow and freezing conditions over the weekend of Garden Re-Leaf and Mother's Day, garden centres throughout the land were encouraged by an increase in buying activity in their stores.

It seems that many centres made the most of the opportunities presented by Garden Re-Leaf and Mother's Day, and that gardeners responded by buying essential products for themselves and presents for the Mums.

“The response to the second Garden Re-Leaf Day has been fantastic,” said the campaign’s founder, Hillview Garden Centre Chief Executive Boyd Douglas Davies.

“The industry has really embraced the event and firmly established it as the first major profile-raiser on the gardening calendar – something that’s much needed, given it seems we can no longer rely on the British Spring weather arriving when we really want it!

“We would like to say a huge thank you to every retailer, supplier, editor and celebrity who took part in Garden Re-Leaf Day or supported in any way. We are hoping for an excellent total raised, and look forward to confirming that amount in the summer.”

The GTN Bestsellers data suggests that gardeners are using the cold spell to buy  products now in preparation for some warmer days ahead. It seems the whole nation is itching to get growing.

Lighting, pruning, lawn care and cleaning products have been selling in large numbers as consumers wait expectantly for the outside temperatures to rise.

New products are also showing up prominently in the GTN Bestsellers Garden Products chart with the biggest move being made by Kaemingk LED Solar Stainless Steel Garden Light, which enters the Top 50 for the first time at No 5.

Yeoman Soft Grip Secateurs in Raspberry Red and Grape Purple are also new entries at Nos 9 and 10 respectively.

The fourth new entry is Westland Hero Paving & Decking Cleaning Captures, which have reached No 21.

The final two newcomers are Scheurich Wild Berries Planter (No 43) and Gardman Solar Glass Jars (No 46).

Bayer Toprose 1kg is the highest climber, moving up 15 places to No 24, whilst the best performing re-entry is Gardman Wind Chime Light at No 29.

The top four products are non-movers with Fito Drip Feeder for Orchids retaining top spot for yet another week.

Kernock Park Plants, supplier of Garvinea Gerbera to the UK, has scooped another prestigious award – winning the plants category of the Sanoma Garden Awards in Holland.

Garvinea was praised for its unique and extremely long flowering period. The jury particularly emphasised the innovative nature of this robust and hardy garden plant, which makes the beloved Gerbera available to all garden lovers out there.

“We are really pleased to be able to bring another great series of plants to the UK marketplace,” says Bruce Harnett, MD of Kernock Park Plants.

“These hardy Gerbera are a breeding innovation of an already popular favourite, so we can see why they are winning the hearts of experts and consumers alike.”

Dobbies fined for polluting Cumbrian stream with sewage
Dobbies is considering appealing after it was given a record £75,000 fine for pumping poorly-treated sewage into a stream at a popular Cumbrian walking spot...
Dobbies is considering appealing after it was given a record £75,000 fine for pumping poorly-treated sewage into a stream at a popular Cumbrian walking spot.

The company admitted four charges at Carlisle magistrates’ court. It was prosecuted by the Environment Agency after a member of the public complained about a foul smell in Sowerby Wood last year.

Jane Morgan, prosecuting, said: “On April 11, an Environment Agency officer responded to a complaint on April 10, that a water course in Sowerby Wood was polluted. The agency had previously received an anonymous complaint on April 2, but on that occasion there was a lack of information.”

The officer found that the water course, which came off an unnamed tributary of the River Caldew, was contaminated with a “white discharge” and “strong sewage odour” which stretched about 1km downstream.

Mrs Morgan told magistrates the presence of sewage fungus was evidence the problem had been ongoing for some time.

Officers investigated the source, and linked it to a pipe pumping secondary-treated sewage into the water from Dobbies.

The garden centre had been granted a permit to do this in 2010, ahead of its opening in 2011.

Dobbies was charged with four counts of failing to comply with the requirements of the permit. Each charge carried a maximum fine of £50,000.

The permit for the garden centre states that the outlet must be checked weekly. The city magistrates heard that staff were not even aware of this condition, much less carrying it out.

Defence barrister Ruth Stockley told magistrates that while the Environment Agency had spoken with a deputy store manager on April 11 and April 20, it was not until a formal letter was given to Dobbies on April 27 that head office became aware of the issue. Miss Stockley said immediate action was then taken to try to resolve the problem.

Taking into account the early guilty pleas, magistrates fined the company £15,000 for the first breach, £25,000 for the second, £10,000 for the third and £25,000 for failing to carry out weekly checks.
It was also ordered to pay the Environment Agency’s costs of £3,976.08 and a £15 victim surcharge.

Speaking after the case, a Dobbies spokeswoman said: “We are taking this matter extremely seriously. Since we became aware that aspects of the sewage treatment plant were not operating as designed, we have been working closely with the Environment Agency and other bodies to rectify the situation. We have admitted liability; however, we are considering an appeal given the unprecedented level of fine.”

She added: “We have put rigorous new processes in place and have installed new equipment to minimise the risk of this happening again.”

45 jobs saved as Whiteley's Garden Centre is bought
Whiteley's Garden Centre near Huddersfield, which was placed in administration last November, has been bought as a going concern, securing all 45 jobs...

Whiteley's Garden Centre at Mirfield, which was placed in administration last November, has been bought as a going concern.

The centre has been running for over 25 years,  is well-known locally and sells a wide range of plants, garden furniture, and pets and aquatics supplies as well as having a busy café.

Its annual turnover is estimated to be over £2m and assets include its freehold site and significant levels of stock.

The business was placed in the hands of joint administrators, Julian Pitts, Bob Maxwell and Andrew Dick of Begbies Traynor, in November  last year and the administrators continued to trade the garden centre, without making any redundancies, while a buyer was sought.

Whiteley's Garden Centre has now been bought by a private investment vehicle chaired and managed by lawyer and turnaround adviser Chris Jones.

"This is a well-established and viable business with a loyal customer base which suffered from financial pressures that were not related to its day-to-day operations,” said joint administrator Julian Pitts.

“As we were confident that a buyer could quickly be found, we continued to trade the business, preserving the jobs of all staff.

“The garden centre generated a high level of interest from potential buyers and it is great news for the business, staff and customers that a deal has been completed so quickly with the minimum of disruption.

"The deal is the best possible outcome, securing a future for one of the area’s most popular garden centres, without having made any redundancies.”

Lincolnshire’s newest garden centre is set to open its doors later this month with the creation of six new full-time jobs and 34 part-time posts.

The Willows at Glentham is a purpose built new garden centre with a cafe and delicatessen, which opens its doors for the first time on Saturday, March 23.

The first 250 visitors will receive a free potted Narcissus, and at the opening there will be a special celebrity guest appearing in the children’s play area.

Owner David Nelstrop said: ‘We want to offer tasty food featuring locally sourced ingredients wherever possible’ and a sneak preview of the menu sounds promising with dishes like Mountain’s Boston Sausages and Mash and Knickerbocker Glory made with Willingham Fayre ice cream.

“The same ethos is embraced in the delicatessen where visitors can choose from lots of great Lincolnshire favourites like Lincolnshire Poacher and Cote Hill Cheese, Pipers Crisps, Tom Wood Ales, along with Lincolnshire sausages brought in especially from the Boston Sausage Co and local free range eggs.”

GCA settle in at HTA offices
The Garden Centre Association have completed their move to the HTA’s offices at Theale...

The Garden Centre Association have completed their re-location from Leafield in Oxfordshire to the HTA’s offices at Theale.

GCA chairman Peter Burks says the move will not affect the association’s independence. “We think it’s really important for the GCA and the HTA to work closely together to make the industry stronger.
